Pete wakes up by Vegas' choked cries echoing in his ears. He's trembling below the white sheets, clutching onto Pete's T-shirt with both hands like a lifeline. Another nightmare. Pete sighs and shakes his shoulder softly to snap him out of it. Vegas gasps and opens his eyes, his gaze full of fear and contempt. It doesn't go away when Vegas realizes he's looking at Pete and not at the hungry ghost that's been haunting his dreams since the coup. The dream must have involved Pete somehow. He tries not to think about how hurt he feels. "Vegas," he whispers; any words uttered at a higher volume would make Vegas flinch. Pete doesn't want that. "It's ok. He's not here." He moves his hand closer to Vegas' face with the intention to wipe the stray tear trickling down his hollow cheek, but Vegas slaps it away. Pete's breath hitches. "Fuck you." It's fine. Vegas is just shaken from the dream. He didn't get punished. He's not holding anything in his hands to drop. There's nothing to ruin. Pete barely notices how tense his own body is. He does when Vegas burrows his head at the crook of his neck and sobs. Pete slowly relaxes as he caresses Vegas' back, mimicking the way his grandma used to do it years ago. "I hate this," he hears Vegas murmur after he manages to calm down. His hot breath makes Pete shiver and smile all at once. "How did you make it stop?" he asks, and it sounds like a genuine question. There's a mistake Vegas always makes when it comes to Pete. He thinks Pete looks down on him for being stuck in the past, stuck in his desperation to get approval from someone who never gave it to him, someone who never will. But there's a reason Pete doesn't box anymore. There are cracks in the mirror, but the reflection remains the same. Pete can't bare to look.

KinnPorsche Two Year Anniversary Event

Prompt: Fate

(Six months post-canon)

“Do you think it was fate?”

Pete turned to face Porsche, where they were leaning on the railing of the balcony, smoking their troubles away.

“Do I think what was fate?”

“All of it. This,” he gestured to himself, Pete and the view of Bangkok in front of them. “Your life, my life…everything.”

Fate. Pete had a complicated relationship with fate. It was not in his best interests to believe that fate had led him to where he was in that very second.

Was it fate that handed him a violent father?

Did fate lead him to the gates of the Major family mansion as a beaten and scrawny sixteen-year-old?

Was it fate that tied him up and tased him? Whipped him til he bled and then showed him a devotion that put religion to shame?

Was it fate who decided not to let his mother live until she got old and grey? To let him suffer his childhood? To let him feel invisible, to feel a loneliness so profound he can still remember the taste of it?

If it indeed was fate, then they didn’t share the same type of humour. Life was what you made of it. Pete may not have chosen his parents or the circumstances that gave him life, but the decisions he’s made since he was old enough to count have been his and his alone. The good, the bad, the ugly, and the infuriating neutrality that life had given him were undoubtedly worth more than something as simple as fate.

Pete made the decision to stay and love Vegas even when he shouldn’t. He was no fool to think that his life was predestined, that this was the only path he could have chosen. If Porsche wanted to hand all accountability to the laughing hand of fate, then so be it. Comfort came in different forms, and he wasn’t one to judge.

But he could hardly be convinced that his life was due to something out of his control when all of the decisions that led him to this balcony were his to make, extenuating circumstance or not.

So, no.

Pete didn’t believe in fate.

To this day nothing can ever come close to Pete jumping when Vegas touches his shoulder. Within just a few seconds it foreshadows their relationship and manages to show us their true personalities. Vegas is cunning and will appear friendly but he always demonstrates his power and dominance indicating his inferiority complex - in this scene, he touches Pete not as a friendly gesture but to assert his dominance and "push" Pete out of the way. Pete looks submissive and polite and seems to fear Vegas but he is courageous and doesn't back down as he is the only one to address Vegas directly and remind him that this place is for bodyguards not the bosses. It indicates his unbreakable will and inner strength which makes him face Vegas in the torture scene without fear.

One of my favorite quotes is “everything in life is about sex, except sex. Sex is about power.” Misattributed to Oscar Wilde.

Vegas absolutely understands this idea. When he tells Pete, “A guy like you, it’s no  fun if you don’t give in” It’s not about consent at all, it’s about power and manipulation. We already know that Vegas is willing to engage in some level of SA because we saw it on-screen, with Porsche, so it’s a bullshit idea that consent is that important to him. 

In Pete’s case, though, there’s no power in him raping Pete. He already has him held hostage, under his control. There’s a chance Pete wouldn’t even fight back, just considering it another form of torture. 

No, Vegas feels vulnerable and angry and that won’t do. He tries to get Pete to back off, with aggression — “You think it serves me right, huh?” and instead, Pete offers him sympathy and understanding. So Vegas defaults to what he does best  — manipulation  — to regain a feeling of power. You can see the change here, from the “real Vegas” he’s been showing Pete, to the fake one.

He manipulates Pete, first by saying that Pete likes him moody and angry. By implying his behavior turns Pete on, it takes the weakness out of his actions. Then he manipulates him by giving him a choice. If he can get Pete aroused and thinking about sex with Vegas of his own free will, he gets the ultimate power rush. Lusting after Vegas is a betrayal of Pete’s commitment to the major family in a way that Pete eating and even Pete staying by his side when Khun Spikes dies is not. Eating is for survival and compassion is for the other person.

I think he was genuinely surprised when Pete kissed him though. He’s gotten what he wanted. He feels like he has the upper hand back and he can leave cock of the walk once more. He underestimates and misunderstands Pete every step of the way — because he’s not used to dealing with people who aren’t playing a game at all times — and this is a perfect example. He tells Pete not to hold it in, and he doesn’t. 

There’s no advantage to Pete choosing Vegas in this, unlike Tawan, or Ken, who are at least partially looking out for themselves when they betray Kinn. Choosing to have sex with Vegas was solely for Pete. That was Vegas, owning Pete’s desire. That was Pete’s desire for Vegas being more important than anything else.

By making Pete choose him though, Vegas gets caught up in his own snare. For maybe the first time in his entire life, Vegas isn’t second, isn’t also a means to an end. And when Pete gives in, it’s not tentative, not hesitant, not holding back something to have an ace in the hole. Pete offers him everything, and that feeling consumes him as well as Pete. And that’s how Vegas, despite his manipulations, gets captured by the game.
