【Move.】ジャズギターマガジン誌/ジャズライフ誌等で度々ピックアップされるギタリスト池戸祐太を起点に個々の才覚が融合したスリーピース。ジャズ・コンテンポラリー、フリー・インプロヴィゼーション、プログレッシヴ等の色彩が詰まったオリジナル楽曲群を提示し続ける。東京都内を拠点にそれぞれが第一線で幅広く活躍中。岐阜は池戸/河村 両名の故郷です。二人の帰郷日程となる毎年のDiAngeloライブは、店主にとってもいつも楽しみなひととき。
池戸祐太(ギタリスト/コンポーザー) 1983年 岐阜出身。14歳でギターを始め、横山昌幸氏に師事。甲陽音楽院にて土野裕司氏に師事。卒業しオーストラリア・シドニーにて音楽活動をした後、東京に拠点を移す。Lage Lund,Mike Morenoにレッスンを受ける。2012年 リーダーアルバム “Breathing Space”をリリース。2018年2ndアルバム “Move. Live @ Virtuoso” をリリース。現在は東京都内を拠点に広く活動中。確かなテクニックとオリジナリティ溢れる楽曲に長く定評があり、注目される現代ジャズギタリストの一人である。2019年には“Mirror”リリース。ジャズギターマガジン誌では《ハーモニーの魔術師》と評される。
古木佳祐(ベーシスト/コンポーザー) 1990年 神奈川出身。歌手の母、ピアニストの父の音楽一家に生まれ幼少の頃よりジャズ、ワールドミュージックに親しんで育つ。実家が経営していた飲食店で行われるセッションに参加するようになりコントラバスを山下弘治氏、ジャズピアノを飯沼五洋氏に師事。即興演奏に必要な音楽理論を独学で身につけ、10代よりプロとしてのキャリアをスタートする。人それぞれの作曲や音楽性への深い理解力には定評がありジャズを中心としつつも様々なジャンルのミュージシャンからも信頼を集めている。https://www.keisukefuruki.com/profile
河村亮(ドラマー/コンポーザー) 1980年岐阜出身。幼いころから両親の影響で音楽に親しみ4歳からクラシックピアノ、13歳からドラムを始める。岐阜大学教育学部音楽科にて器楽奏法/音楽理論を学ぶ。和泉正憲氏に打楽器全般を、ドラムを黒田和良氏に師事。現在は活動の拠点を東京に移しジャズ・ポップスフィールドで演奏活動中。非常に音楽的、スムーズで安定したドラムプレイや人柄には、共演者から厚い信頼が寄せられている。直近の共演には太田剣(sax)和泉宏隆(p)堀秀彰(p)松本圭司(p)高木里代子(p)等。

JULIETA EUGENIO with Marta Sanchez, Matt Dwonszyk, and Steven Krammer, SMALL’S JAZZ CLUB, 5 SEPTEMBER 2024, 10:30 pm set
Fritz framed his essay on the year’s best at the end of 2022 around Julieta Eugenio’s album Jump, an astonishing tenor/bass/drums date that draws on
“hints of saxophonists across the whole history of the music, from Coleman Hawkins through Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson to Chris Potter and Joshua Redman. All that, and more, in a performance of sustained brilliance that is entirely Julieta’s own, whether she’s trading rhythmic conceits with Jonathan [Barber] or playing hide-and-go-seek with the harmonies Matt [Dwonszyk] suggests.”
Fritz puts her in a lineage that began for both of us as listeners with Sonny Rollins at the Village Vanguard. But there are also Lee Konitz’s Motion, Joe Henderson’s State of the Tenor, Ornette Coleman’s At the Golden Circle, elite saxophonists performing without the net of a chordal instrument. Among Eugenio’s peers are Melissa Aldana who assayed the format with her Crash Trio recordings and Nicole Glover whose current working band consists of bassist Tyrone Allen and drummer Kayvon Gordon. Each has the serious breadth that Fritz cites above in Eugenio’s case and we have had several virtual barstool discussions trying to identify their influences.
Aldana has moved on to playing with guitarists like Lage Lund and availing herself of the openness that instrument provides which suits her light tone. Glover’s first trio was very busy and she played just as furiously, but Allen and Gordon have opened up some space for her too. This gig was, despite Marta Sanchez’s significant contributions to two band tunes and a sumptuous duet, still primarily a trio set drawing on Eugenio’s Jump and its successor Stay.
Her tone throughout was lighter, linear and melodic. Even with Dwonszyk and Krammer churning behind her not necessarily that loudly, she is deliberate and thoughtful. With Sanchez, particularly on the duet, she played a little deeper, a little mellower. There’s a wistfulness to her playing that is very appealing. Wistful and open, but she is fully in command of her horn and her band and her vision for her music.
The addition of Sanchez then is an intriguing development. She too is quite comfortable at the edges the rhythm section points too, but she also finds ample ways to make tough, beautiful statements. Dwonszyk has been a fixture in this band and his riffs and lines help shape the tunes. Jump and Stay relied on Jonathan Barber’s sophisticated drumming, so I missed him here. But Steven Krammer brought his own magic with layers of intricacy inside an insistent pulse. He churned and pushed the edge, but was not overpowering in any way.
Together they all contributed to the exciting extension of Julieta Eugenio’s aesthetic.

Lage Lund: Terrible Animals (Criss Cross Jazz, 2019)

Guitarist Lage Lund has been one of the most identifiable voices on the New York jazz scene for many years. Originally hailing from Norway, he has been one of the most important guitarists in the post Scofield, McLaughlin, Frisell generation. That generation, which has included guitarists such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Rez Abbasi, Matthew Stevens, Jakob Bro and Ben Monder to name but a few, have been stretching the boundaries of jazz guitar and contributing to the micro innovations in vocabulary.  For Terrible Animals his fifth Criss Cross release, the guitarist has assembled a stunning new quartet with pianist Sullivan Fortner, bassist Larry Grenadier and jack of all trades, multi instrumentalist and drummer Tyshawn Sorey (who sticks to the latter instrument here).
Lund's quartet originally included Sorey and Fortner, with Matt Brewer in the bass chair with the group playing much of the repertoire in New York and elsewhere.  He felt the group had such cohesion, that they could go anywhere musically and wrote the music specifically with them in  mind.  Indeed, the simpatico with Fortner, Grenadier (in place of Brewer) and Sorey is impressive.  The ten Lund originals on Terrible Animals are melodic, quirky, filled with dry, ironic humor. turbulent, and teeming with unpredictable twists  and turns.  Everything sounds positively huge—thanks to Lund's analog triggered guitar synth overdubbing.  The group interplay on such tricky material is a marvel to behold.  Lund's “Suppressions” a wry reference to John Coltrane's “Impressions” starts with a moody out of tempo introduction with a warm synth pad wash transforming into a melody that uses an intriguing set of intervals.  Grenadier and Sorey participate in a thrilling give and take, the bassist's notes plodding, with Sorey's cymbal work resembling something of a half time feel, they are in a virtual tug of war during Lund's ebullient solo.  The whole time, Grenadier threatens to go into a full blown 4/4 swing feel, until suddenly mid way through the guitar solo, the dam bursts and the bassist and drummer vault into full blown swing; it is completely unexpected on first listen and on subsequent listens one can hear the brilliance of Lage's structures.  
“Hard Eights” inspired by the guitarist's trip to a casino has a main hook line that is filled with humor, conjuring a cowboy on a horse yet the horse is a bit drunk.  There is a pronounced Frisellian aspect to the section gorgeously framed by the familiar looping strings of a Mellotron.  The guitarist flies into a wonderfully lyrical solo entry, and Sorey is right there with him opening explosive torrents of sound.  Fortner's solo is gorgeously fluid. Sorey bursts at the seams on “Aquanauts” playing a solo after the first melody pass, an interesting touch, with the guitarist's expressive outro solo over 5/4.  The guitarist again uses 5/4 in “Brasilia”, with Fortner going for the jugular.  “Haitian Ballad” features feathery brushes from Sorey, beautifully introspective Fortner and Lund's distorted outro solo is supported by the emotional rush of swelling synth pads in the background.   “Ray Ray”'s R&B groove  starts with J Dilla-ish flammed rim shots from Sorey there is a rhythmic quarter note underpinning through the piece.  Lund's solo is flanked by absolutely burning commentary from Sorey, the waltz time feel from the drummer is accented by rolling triplets on snare and napalm blasts from cymbals.  He boils over on his solo over the vamp heightened in intensity from slowly rising choir pad like synth.  “Take It Eas” borrows a page out of Michael Brecker's “Syzygy” in the sense that, Lund transcribed Grenadier's improvised bass solo, and turns it into something composed by doubling it where guitar and bass are nearly imperceptible.
“Terrible People” is a brief ominous cinematic slab, with doubled acoustic and electric guitar enhanced by eerie effects.  The title is  derived from the Kurt Vonnegut literary work of which the album shares it's title.
Sound
As mentioned earlier, the sound of Terrible Animals is massive.  The album, excellently recorded by Michael Marciano at Systems Two in Brooklyn has a dry close miked sound stage, with guitar taking center channel, at times to sometimes surprising effect.  For example, towards the close of “Haitian Ballad” the listener is greeted with distorted, ring modulated guitar, with delay veering off into the left channel.  Piano also shares the center with correct imaging vis a vis left hand and right hand in their proper channels respectfully.  Drums are incredibly powerful and detailed. Certainly over thirty years the general area of synth like effects, guitar synthesis and MIDI pickups like Roland's GK system have improved tremendously.  Gone are the days where they are not horrible messes like the ARP Avatar, or poorly tracking glitch filled Synclavier guitar controllers of the past.  The latter are especially famous as Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola all had one, the famous LED lit Synclavier panels affixed to a Roland G303 guitar (or in Metheny's case) built into the Roland controller itself. Guitar synthesis in the present is firmly rooted in the post modern age with many effects achieved via just laptop and Lage's overdubs are positioned in the back of the sound stage, sometimes across the left and right channels.
Closing Thoughts
Terrible Animals is one of the best albums of 2019.  The quartet of Lund, Fortner (who for ten years was in the late Roy Hargrove's quintet) Grenadier and Sorey leave no places unguarded.  There is nothing safe in this music, it is filled with death defying risk taking and it pays off through passionate solos and intuitive ensemble interplay. Sometimes, such complex music comes off as contrived but not here—with Lund's unique compositional world and incredibly strong guitar voice, everything is completely organic.  It is also refreshing to hear a label such as Criss Cross record such progressive music from shining stars of the contemporary New York scene like Alex Sipiagin, Matt Brewer, Lund and David Binney.  When the label made itself known in the early 80's, it was strongly invested in recording hard bop and standard repertoire from long time veterans and younger players alike with many proclaiming the Dutch label the Blue Note of the 80's.  It's quite nice to hear something as uncompromising as the guitarist's music on the label, and the retro designed cover dating back to early 80's albums is a nice touch. Lage Lund's journey will continue to blaze bright paths far into the future.

LIVE STREAM: ODE FOR JOE (HENDERSON)—Renee Rosnes with Nicholas Payton, Melissa Aldana, Peter Washington, and Al Foster, SMOKE JAZZ CLUB, 20 APRIL 2024, 9 pm set
I was all in for this gig, a top flight band honoring a revered composer/improviser. The blurb mentioned that Renee Rosnes and Al Foster had long standing gigs in JOE HENDERSON’s bands. In interviews around the formation of Artemis, Rosnes recalled a gig with Henderson where she and the rest of the rhythm section were women and that’s all the NYTimes talked about when she/they/Henderson were simply stoked about how good the music was. Foster was part of the Art of the Tenor trio. In her band introductions, Rosnes recalled that everyone but the tenor player had played with Henderson.
Okay, a second tenor on a gig is rare enough and this tenor player was 13 and living in Chile when Henderson died. So, she’s excused. But when the Saturday/Sunday tenor was belatedly announced as Melissa Aldana the gig became can’t miss/see in real time/see again. She is a favorite and part of the pleasure in watching her career unfold is to think about who have been formative influences. Early in her career, she recorded in a trio. Not Sonny Rollins, but Henderson maybe, Mark Turner probably. Her tone has gotten lighter and she’s taken to the mid and altissima range. While her pauses have always been distinctive, with Charles Altura and now Lage Lund making the guitar the primary chordal instrument in her bands, there is even more space. On this night, she was throatier and more lower register. Her band is quite quite good, but Peter Washington bubbling away behind her (and everybody) with oh so smart bass lines had to push her. Washington was a treasure on this gig as he so often is. Foster was equally important.
Nicholas Payton is somewhat dour and implacable, but his trumpet speaks eloquently with Hendersonian taste and adventure. Rosnes was appropriately the music director, it was her gig. Take that NY Times. Her playing too had both touch and an edge. Yes, the band had glorious material to work with, rich and subtle. They made it sing and feel comfortable without compromising Henderson’s intelligence.
And what material. The originals were Serenity as the opener and Recorda Me as the fitting introduction to a stunning home stretch. The standards Without a Song (Aldana has seen fit to post her solo as a clip on social media and that’s well justified) and, probably, Duke Pearson’s You Know I Care spoke to Henderson the arranger and were evocative.
But that homestretch was sublime. Recorda Me but than Isfahan from the Billy Strayhorn tribute I had even before I started getting fully back into jazz and then Beatrice from the Art of the Tenor treasures. Have I heard Aldana play from the Ellington universe? It was an invitation to go higher while also locking into Johnny Hodges lush tone. But it wasn’t just her as Payton soloed first with his own taste and Washington helped them all, including Rosnes, with particularly provocative lines as he had the rich composition and the orchestration to draw on. Beatrice was even prettier while having a drive that both Rosnes and Aldana stoked.
It was a fitting tribute to a giant of the music and as fine a stream as I’ve heard in a while.

Ingrid Jensen | At Sea
Ingrid Jensen is a jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player probably best-known for her place in some major big bands (including the Maria Schneider Orchestra, DIVA, and Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society), but she’s also a bandleader as well.  This is one of her most recent albums (albeit not THE most recent), and it features pianist Geoffrey Keezer, drummer/percussionist Jon Wikan, bassist Matt Clohesy, and a couple of solos from guitarist Lage Lund (another Maria Schneider alum).  This album, to me, has the feeling of a lot of albums from the 80s and 90s of being straight-ahead but not really swinging.  It’s not a bad thing, by any means, but albums in this vein do sometimes have a harder time holding my attention.  Jensen, Keezer, and Lund all put some great solos on here.  There are a couple of tracks that feel inspired by some of Miles’s tamer electric experiments, and some of the ‘modern creative’ sound I think could also be attributed to Maria Schneider.  It’s a decent album - I’ll probably check out more of her at some point.
