The #VeniceFlorida City Council voted to #BanSharkFishing from the pier after nearly 50 years of anglers brutalizing these beautiful creatures from this iconic dock. The big push came from the new FWC land based shark fishing regulations and Venice Mayor John Holic’s sensitivity to the issue. All of the credit goes to a small group of local #sharkconservationists who showed up to the meetings and spoke on behalf of the sharks in order to put an end to the heinous acts that were being carried out on this pier for many many years. Please, please please speak out against land based shark fishing at the FWC hearing this week on the east coast of Florida! I will see you there! Please share this post as we need to speak up for our friends in the sea! “Catch and release” does NOT mean the shark survived. A dead scalloped hammerhead washed up on a beach in Brevard County, FL on Tuesday. It was determined that the shark was a victim of land based shark fishing, which it is illegal to land hammerheads because they are protected. The hook and leader were both found inside of the otherwise healthy shark. Just because it swims off does not mean it survives, especially if it’s a hammerhead. LBSF is a heavily scrutinized industry because of the damage it causes to sharks. Florida officials are currently holding a series of meetings to discuss regulating lbsf across the state. It has a large, blunt head with prominent forehead ridges and dark brown harness-like markings on a lighter grey-brown body, and can grow up to 1.65 metres (5.5 ft) long. The Port Jackson shark is a migratoryspecies, traveling south in the summer and returning north to breed in the winter. It feeds on hard-shelled mollusks, crustaceans, sea urchins, and fish. Identification of this species is very easy due to the pattern of harness-like markings which crosses the eyes, runs along the back to the first dorsal fin, then crosses the side of the body, in addition to the spine in front of both dorsal fins. It is endemic to the temperate waters around southern Australia and can be found in an area stretching from southern Queensland, south to Tasmania, and west to the central coast of Western Australia.
