What is zoochosis?⠀ Zoochosis is a term used to describe animals that display repetitive and stereotypic behaviors like swaying, circling, bar biting, self harm, vomiting, pacing, head bobbing, jaw popping, logging (remaining immobile for long periods of time), or any other type of behavior seen over and over again without reason or function.⠀ Zoochosis is commonly seen in captive animals as well as ones kept for laboratory testing. It is not seen in wild animals. Humans who exhibit these behaviors usually have some type of neurological disorder, have suffered from trauma, or have been imprisoned.⠀ Scientists have studied zoochosis for decades and say it is an indicator of poor psychological well being. We are overwhelmed with the amount of plastic we see floating in the sea or along the shoreline, but have you thought about all the pieces that sink 😐?⠀ Video of the day from IG: @fredrikgmyhre!⠀ Words from him below!⠀ "Up to 94 percent of all plastic going in to the ocean ends up on the ocean floor. ⠀ #⠀ This is how it looks like several places in Oslo Fjord, Norway. My home fjord is unfortunately not anywhere near unique. Every year over 8 million tons of plastic find its way to the ocean. 🌊 The situation is beyond alarming and by 2050 there can be more plastic than fish in the ocean - if we do not change our ways. ⠀ #⠀ We have to stop this growing plastic monster of the deep. It's been an absolutely horrifying week for dolphins passing by Taiji. We've been heartbroken watching updates come in from @dolphin_project who are on the ground photographing and documenting all animals taken and slaughtered every day.⠀ 4 days ago a pod of approx. 40 striped dolphins were herded into the cove. Despite striped dolphins having a history of not doing well in dolphinariums, 2 were taken for captivity, and the rest were slaughtered.⠀ 2 days ago a pod of bottlenose dolphins, including a mother and calf, was herded into the cove in three groups totaling about 50 dolphins and held overnight. A dead dolphin was found floating in the water, after succumbing to the stress of the capture. Yesterday, after a 5 hour selection process, over 30 dolphins were taken for captivity. The second selection process took place today and you can check for further updates on the @dolphin_project page and to tune in to their livestreams.⠀ Please never buy a ticket to a dolphinarium AND, if you know anyone that is still unaware of the cruelty behind captive dolphin industry, tag them in one of these posts or one of the many on @dolphin_project. One of our @keiko_conservation_japan team members Tracie has been volunteering with our friends at @dolphin_project for the past two months in Taiji.⠀ Read more about the experience below!⠀ "For the past 2 months, I volunteered with @dolphin_project as a cove monitor in Taiji, Japan. I helped document, expose and livestream the cruelty inflicted upon dolphins both wild and captive. In this time, I witnessed some of the most heartbreaking things I have ever seen… young Risso’s dolphins being ripped away from their mothers, thrashing while they were taken to be dumped out at sea because they were too small to be counted towards the hunting quota… Bottlenose and rough toothed dolphins spyhop in panic and paralyzed by stress as their family members got captured… Primarily in the name of captivity. My work on this issue is far from done. Over the next few days, I will be sharing some of my photos from my first time in Taiji.⠀ ・⠀ Although these dolphin hunts are often put under the spotlight in Western countries, it is an extremely miniscule part of the Japanese population that is involved in them. Being half Japanese and heavily raised in the culture and country myself, it greatly saddens me that dolphins and whales are not protected here. There is still so much to be done and so much awareness to be raised. So many Japanese people still do not know these hunts exist in their own country, as much of the media stays quiet about it here. The greatest change is when you work with people, not against them. ⠀ Drive hunts are fueled by the captivity industry. Buyers from marine parks and aquariums all around the world buy wild-caught dolphins from Taiji. Some of you may have seen the press release we put out last month about a leaked building inspection alleging multiple structures at Hawaii's local captive dolphin facility, @sealifepark, were in danger of collapse. The engineer also alleged that management was aware of the issue but made inspectors sign non-disclosure agreements.⠀ With one of the buildings mentioned in the report still open and no known investigation nor penalty given to the park for allegedly covering up a very serious public safety concern, further attempts to contact DLNR received no response. Instead, last week #SeaLifePark announced they would be undergoing an estimated $30 million renovation.⠀ ⠀ While this may sound like good news, these improvements won't be made to areas of the park where they are most needed, instead they'll be for things like an "active" volcano exhibit, restoring part of a historic fishing village called Kaupo, updating the park's restaurant area, and expanding their already questionable sea turtle release program. Zero improvements will be done concerning the state of the dolphin exhibits and tanks.⠀ ⠀ With so many poor reviews referencing the park's dated and crumbling state on travel websites like Trip Advisor and Yelp, it is discouraging but not surprising that the park will simply be made to "look" nicer while failing to address much needed improvements for the welfare of the animals in their care.⠀ Sea Life Park general manager informed press the park’s redevelopment is on an "aggressive permitting timetable," with public hearings expected in February and March. #KeikoConservation and @animalrightshawaii will be very active in these upcoming hearings. Very bad news.⠀ "Some disturbing footage taken today has shed light on the horrific conditions wild whales are subjected to following capture operations. As mentioned previously, a veterinary inspection by Russian authorities discovered 90 beluga whales and 11 killer whales confined in small pens in Srednyaja Bay, near the city of Nakhodka. The footage shows large numbers of young belugas forced into tight quarters in nine disturbingly small sea pens. One sea pen is notably empty following reports that several of the belugas had been placed in transportation tanks to be sent to an unknown destination. It’s speculated this could have been an attempt to hide some illegal activity as an official inspection was scheduled the day after the move. The 11 killer whales are housed out of sight in the converted aviaries. These animals have been housed in these awful conditions ever since they were captured in the summer. We are sad to see that Taiji is now pushing a film that will promote the dolphinarium industry throughout Japan. Young and popular Japanese actors will star as dolphin trainers at Taiji's infamous #TaijiWhaleMuseum, glorifying careers as dolphin trainers and the aquarium. Most people in Japan have no idea about the brutal truth of how these animals are obtained.
