La Panthere design is synonymous with Cartier. It was conceived by Jeanne Toussaint (1887-1978), Cartier's director of luxury jewelry, just as the Art Deco period of abstract and geometric designs waned.  The panther brooch, typically sculpted with diamond, onyx and precious gemstones, appealed to Cartier's strong-willed and assertive female clients of the World War II period such as Barbara Hutton, America's 'Poor Little Rich Girl', and the Duchess of Windsor.

In 1987, Sotheby's sold the Duchess of Windsor's jewelry collection in Geneva for a record Sfr 74.5 million, which included an onxy and diamond panther bracelet from 1952 (pictured).  In November 2010, the Duchess of Windsor's panther bracelet was re-offered at Sotheby's and sold for 4.5 million pounds against a presale estimate of 1-1.5 million pounds !  Along with the sale of jewels from Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1987) and The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor (2011), the Duchess of Windsor's jewelry auction in 1987 and the individual items that might be re-offered in the years to come will be remembered as one of a handful of jewelry auction highlights.

Earlier this month, Cartier released a spectacular three minute short film called L'Odyssee de Cartier.  A panther breaks out of his diamond and onyx armor and travels through Russia, China, India (an appeal to these emerging markets, perhaps?) and France encountering Cartier's memorable designs along the way until the panther finds a beautiful lady in red with an exquisite aquamarine bracelet clasped with the panther motif.
