“Over the next few months, relief efforts increased dramatically, as did the number of threatened and actual strikes. Workers building the Northwestern Ontario section of the Trans-Canada Highway walked off the job over wages. Unemployment demonstrations also continued unabated. The Workers’ Unity League claimed to be taking a prominent role in each. Authorities clearly believed this to be the case, as surveillance increased and, as was the case in April, the CLDL [Canadian Labor Defence League] offices in Port Arthur and the Ukrainian Labour Temple in Fort William were raided and workers were arrested.
The raids may have prompted the renewed sense of solidarity that began just before May Day in 1933. Wobblies, Communists, and assorted trade unionists joined to form a committee to organize demonstrations in both cities. A reported 2,500 workers attended the parade and accompanying outdoor mass meeting. Cooperation was most apparent, however, in June 1933, when over 1,300 workers in the Thunder Bay and Nipigon districts began a strike under the leadership of a committee composed of both Communists and Wobblies
The LWIUC [Lumber Workers Industrial Union of Canada] would claim that it had organized the joint strike committee. Many signs, however, such as the central role of the Wobbly-controlled Labour Temple and the prominence of key figures, point to its formation through the united efforts of Wobblies, Communists, and even Finnish nationalists. In this instance, as in many others, the IWW and Communists could achieve things together that eluded them separately. Finnish and Ukrainian workers leery of Communists, especially given recent controversies regarding their language federations, could be brought into the struggle through the Wobblies. Thus, seemingly opposed forces – the Port Arthur Trades and Labour Council, the Young Communist League, the Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC), the LWIUC, and the IWW – all contributed to this epochal strike of the 1930s.
It was a large (1,300-strong), dramatic, and violent strike. It brought crowds of people into the streets of Port Arthur, and although it resulted in a disappointing wage settlement, below that demanded by the workers, such concrete achievements as the recognition of camp committees, no-discrimination agreements, and the reform of the truck system in the camps allowed the LWIUC to claim a moral victory. At the same time, the LWIUC blamed the IWW [Industrial Workers of the World] for the settlement’s limitations, and emerged from the strike as its clear beneficiary – with a growth in its membership from 500 to 1,300 over the first six months of 1933. Moreover, because the CPC union, unlike the Wobblies, was willing to take part in government-imposed collective bargaining, it was left in a stronger, more permanent position.
Throughout the summer and fall of 1933, the CPC [Communist Party of Canada] continued to experience success in the forests of Northwestern Ontario. “An estimated 25,000 meals,” according to Mary Veltri, “were distributed to the strikers through the seven kitchens which were set up in the Lakehead, Tarmola, Lappi, Nipigon, North Branch, and Long Lac.” Donations and foodstuffs flowed from both the Communist and Wobbly halls in Port Arthur and Fort William. Much of this cooperation resulted from a mass conference held in August 1933. The LWIUC, IWW, unemployed and unorganized workers, and farmers from the region surrounding the Lakehead all participated and agreed on a strategy for the upcoming harvest and lumber season. A uniform piece rate of $2.50 per cord, a minimum monthly wage of $40, and a 75-cent daily charge for board were established. This solidarity ensured that when timber operators increased wages from the previous year, the mass committee rejected the offer.
The strike gained strength despite an attempt by the LWIUC representatives to take control of the joint IWW/CPC strike committee. By the middle of November, over 4,500 lumber workers were participating, most of them in the Thunder Bay District. In response, the police in Fort William and Port Arthur began to arrest strike fundraisers in an attempt to weaken the strike effort. In one incident, forty-seven picketers were arrested and thirty-three of them were sent to jail for two months or more. One outcome of the strikes was a change in tactics by the Canadian Administration of the IWW. The Canadian Executive Branch began to vigorously push forward the changes that its newly elected leader, George MacAdam, thought necessary for the survival of the IWW in Canada. Financially, MacAdam had inherited an administration no better off than that of the Communists. Writing to the other members of the IWW CEB [Canadian Executive Branch], he outlined the board’s priorities as he saw them. Foremost was a commitment to the establishment of the Canadian Defence Organization (CDO). MacAdam viewed the CDO as a necessity because, he argued, “if the IWW functions with success in the economic field, it will incur the hostility of the masters and their tools.”
While rational, the desire for the CDO demonstrates that the IWW was not acting as an innovative and forward-thinking organization. It was also trying to compete with the recent activities of the CPC’s Canadian Labour Defence League, which had failed to address the needs of all workers. MacAdam was concerned that “cases would be thrown upon us by the rival defence organization [the CLDL] and if we do not have a clear cut policy, we could not turn them down without losing prestige.” The CDO was ambitious in design and difficult to implement. A chronic lack of money meant that members were limited to the CEB and the CTKL. The CEB and MacAdam also proposed to model the CDO after the General Defence Committee. Funds would be generated through membership cards and stamps patterned after those currently used by the CTKL and Junior Wobblies Union, but as these were unavailable in 1933 and the cost was prohibitive, it was decided that a 25-cent stamp would be made compulsory for members one year and over and voluntary for those under one year. “Older members,” MacAdam argued, “thoroly [sic] understand the necessity of raising monies.”
...
Violence broke out again in early December 1933, when, after nearly a month of labour unrest in the bush camps, police attempted to break the ranks of strikers blocking strikebreakers from gaining access to the Pigeon Timber Company’s stables. Over fifty police officers armed with guns and batons attacked the unarmed strikers but were repelled. Undaunted, they next fell on a nearby workers’ hall and, with the assistance of a number of citizens, proceeded to enter and beat the men found asleep inside. Additional officers outside ambushed those who managed to escape. So indiscriminate did the police become that, according to one witness, they “did not distinguish strikers from bystanders and several onlookers and passersby in the vicinity received a cudgeling.” The next day, even the most ardently anti-Communist unions at the Lakehead added their voices to those protesting the city of Port Arthur’s involvement in the violence and demanding that the strike be resolved. Eight days after the police attack, many smaller operations bowed to pressure, reaching a settlement on wages and recognizing the unions involved. The larger companies agreed to align their wage scale with that of the other companies but continued refusing to recognize any unions. The CPC [and less so the IWW, whose funds ran out quickly] won renown in its fight against the timber companies, despite incurring the anti-Communist and anti-foreign wrath of the local media. Up to the end of 1933, the party was prominent in the extraordinary struggles unfolding in Northwestern Ontario."

Il Siracusano 3DPV Behind the Scenes Director interview
Tumblr media
From HG’s recruitment post
Note: more like a summary & not a full translation
How did the concept for the 3DPV of Il Siracusano come about?
When we decided to make the PV, we were thinking how to present the upcoming story in animation but also keep it within the time limit. We ended up choosing the scene that showcased the cast's character and personalities: the scene where Texas pretends to be a musician while Lappland in the audience, the both of them in tune with each other. In the ruins of the theatre, Texas and Lappland try their hands on performing a moonlit comedy. Also! Was Sora's appearance not a surprise? She also shows a different side of her.
"So why a comedy?"
The elements we have this time; Theatre, Jazz, Lappland, and Texas are all very rich but due to the runtime limit we thought that instead of showcasing the relationship between the characters directly, why not represent their emotions through something that's more fun, through some dynamic Jazz Swing music. The old yet gorgeous theatre and nostalgic musicians, a silent bassist, the broken glass from backstage, and also a silver-haired assassin, flamboyant and (not) showing restraint, composing a film that looks and feels different, we hope the audience enjoyed watching it in the 3.5 anniversary stream.
Tumblr media
They had a lot of environmental details like drink bars with shattered glasses and sofas cut open revealing their cotton stuffing that they wanted to fit in to showcase the Siracusa vibes but due to the time limit they focused on the characters getting memorable scenes.
Tumblr media
During the storyboarding sessions they had up to 3 versions before deciding to separate Texas and Lappland's storylines to have them converge and co-operate with each other(lol) to complete the mission.
They wanted to go on a field trip to research on how to portray the atmosphere of being in a theatre but (china lockdown moment) so they had to make do with secondary references.
Tumblr media
The PV is set in a luxurious retro theatre and had to reflect the elegance of jazz with a low-key and calm atmosphere similar to the Godfather films. For the interiors they referenced classical Italian architecture as well as American broadway theatres.
Tumblr media
The scene returns to the stage after Lappland splits the wall open, but this time they destroyed and reconstructed the area to create a new space for their performance. Part of the design focused on the space formed by the rubble, and since the destruction involved the ceiling, there would be a cold light from the outside, appearing similar to a stage light.
Tumblr media
The theatre corridors are divided into 3 -- a wide corridor, a reception area, a narrow hallway, with varying degrees of light to reflect the rhythm of the story’s development.

 Lappy fangs real!
Tumblr media
They made HD textures of their eyes to show up better in close ups.

Texas hands. finally some long fingers representation

Weapon models
Tumblr media
Special effects: Texas has a new look and they had to showcase how cold she is on the surface yet showing the fire inside and they hope the audience can see the contrast of the two (uhmm event-story wise...? debatable LOL)
Tumblr media
They referenced classic films like The Irishman (?isn’t this pretty recent) for the on-stage lighting to show the luxurious and exquisite atmosphere and the new stage amidst the rubble is a parallel to it, the warm and cold contrasting each other.

Flexing the VFX and props they made

Animation process
Tumblr media
They mixed 2D with 3D and did stuff frame-by-frame and had to do a lot of post-production to make it all come together
Tumblr media
Music was composed by Mr Li Shuhai(李世海), a jazz performer and composer, and they recorded live with the performers' movements also filmed as references for the animation key-frames

Here are all the songs Nightwish have never played live (by Metal Hammer)
Symphonic metal giants Nightwish have recorded around 117 songs, with only 34 never seeing the light of day
Tumblr media
If you’ve ever seen the Finnish symphonic metal giants Nightwish at one of their 951 gigs (at the time of penning this list), there’s a good chance you’ll have heard them play Nemo, Wish I Had an Angel and Dark Chest of Wonders. The band’s top three most-played songs all come from the 2005 album Once, but what are they not playing?
With the help of tour Bible and gig reviewer’s best friend, Setlist.fm, we found 34 tracks from the band that have never been played live. For context, there are around 117 recorded songs in their discography; “around”, because their later albums have frequently been accompanied by a second disc of purely orchestral versions, and because Tuomas Holopainen has a penchant for composing songs that go over the 25-minute mark and consist of multiple movements.
Some of these, like the Lappi (Lapland) quadrilogy, are treated as four separate tracks here per the album’s tracklisting, whereas songs like The Greatest Show On Earth are treated as one long song. Cover songs that are B-sides such as Where Were You Last Night, and the instrumental Imaginaerum soundtrack album, haven’t been included, nor has the second disc of Human. :||: Nature.
Now that we’ve explained our highly sophisticated scientific methodology, below are the songs that have never seen the stage lights. Is your favourite Nightwish song on here? Get ready to strap in, and nerd out…
Angels Fall First (1997)
Besides the recently released Human. :||: Nature, the band’s debut album is the one they’ve delved into the least when it comes to live shows: the aforementioned Lappi (Lapland) and the largely acoustic Nightwish demo have all been skipped over, as have the mellow Return to the Sea and the folky Nymphomaniac Fantasia.
Oceanborn (1998)
The release of Oceanborn saw the band start to tour outside of Finland, and with the 1998 record full of tracks like Sacrament of Wilderness and Passion & The Opera, you could forgive them for overlooking The Riddler and Nightquest. Though if you ask us, we might swap Walking In The Air for either.
Wishmaster (2000)
From the band’s second-most played record, there are just two songs they’ve consistently skipped over: the mournful ballad Two for Tragedy, and the histrionic Bare Grace Misery, a song with a delightfully melodramatic chorus that frankly deserves at least one live outing.
Century Child (2002)
2002’s Century Child and the addition of Marko Hietala’s powerful voice ushered in a new era for Nightwish and brought what would become a new setlist staple in the form of the stunning Ever Dream. It’s not surprising they favoured other songs over the slow, plodding Forever Yours and Ocean Soul, but we reckon that the sultry Feel For You should have its day in the sun at least once. Speaking of which…
Once (2004)
Once is big for many reasons: their most played album, their last with Tarja Turunen, and the one that gained them a significant new following outside of Europe; of all its songs, only one has never been played, and it’s the guitar-driven Dead Gardens.
Dark Passion Play (2007)
The Dark Passion Play tour was, and still is, Nightwish’s biggest tour to date, which is why it comes as little surprise that they’ve played nearly every song on the record with the exception of the sweet mid-tempo For The Heart I Once Had and the vitriolic Master Passion Greed.
With the latter widely understood to be a thinly-veiled jab at Tarja’s husband, perhaps the band felt that playing the song live would be taking things a bit too far, or that those bitter feelings are best left in the past.
Imaginaerum (2011)
With a feature film to promote and another massive world tour, only the instrumental Arabesque and the gentle folky ballad Turn Loose The Mermaids were missed off the setlist for the Imaginaerum shows. The latter, featuring a gorgeous violin solo by Pekka Kuusisto, definitely deserves to be heard in a live setting.
Endless Forms Most Beautiful (2015)
Enter Floor Jansen to take Nightwish into their Attenborough-metal era. Nothing says “I’ve got a National Geographic subscription” like writing an instrumental track called The Eyes of Sharbat Gula as tribute to the publication’s most iconic cover photograph, featuring the piercing green-eyed stare of a young Afghan woman. Of course, instrumentals are tricky to do justice live, so we’ll let them off for not giving this one an airing.
Human. :||: Nature (2020)
They band are only now touring their most recent record two-and-a-bit years after its release, thanks to a little something we’d probably rather not think about anymore, but so far they haven’t shown any love to the album opener Music (except as an intro played over the PA), Procession or closing track Endlessness. Watch this space.
Deeper Cuts
Like any band with as many albums and singles as Nightwish have, they bring out the odd B-side from time to time. Personally, we’d love to hear Floor have a stab at the ludicrous The Heart Asks Pleasure First, a sweeping, cinematic waltz from with some eye-wateringly high notes and beautiful violin outro.
They’ve also never played Away, Lagoon, Live to Tell The Tale, Once Upon a Troubadour, Sagan, Sleepwalker, The Wayfarer or White Night Fantasy. While there’s probably little chance of them playing Erämaan Viimeinen unless Floor really knuckles down in her language studies, perhaps Tuomas’ wife, Finnish singer Johanna Kurkela, could join in for the Dark Passion Play-era jig.

I'm currently thinking about writing a short Fic and was checking out Lapplands file and voice lines. While it's insane how much info they manage to squeeze in these, it's still mindboggling how little we actually understand about Lappland. Most of the stuff I wrote down is speculation.
The most interesting part about Lappland is probably her obsession with power and how she makes others fear her. She does this so casually, that RI employees unironically think she's just "being personable and polite".
Like, Lappi will waltz into Dokutahs office, blades in hand, sit down on the couch, be like "not an issue if I bring these with me, right? Oh btw, did you know once you have a weapon, you don't need a reason to kill? I thought this was interesting", and giving them the most unsettling, yet friendly smile, while sharpening her blade. And next she's like "Texas got some nice friends, maybe I'll pay them a visit", and Dokutah just starts sweating and filing a restraining order immediately.
Lappland is actively provoking others with everything she says, even when most of the time she doesn't even intent to harm them. But when she battles, this works to her advantage.
Lappland doesn't mess around when deployed, does whatever she want and tears through everyone in her path with deadly precision, while nullifying their abilities. This is scary by itself, but when you watch one of your comrades being taken out by Lappland - you take those legs and run, making you an easy target for Lappi.
Ironically, there seemed to have been one person who never feared her - Texas. While their relationship is somewhat vague, we know that Texas used to be way more aggressive than she is today, probably on the same level as Lappland, while still being reserved and stoic. Lappi being weird probably didn't even bother "old Texas" thus making her interesting to Lappland. I'm still unsure on the nature of their relationship, but "rivals" is the one I'm currently going with, since Lappland graves battle and especially battles with strong opponents. Old Texas, unshaken and without fear, could fight Lappland as an equal.
But then, when they met again at Rhodes, Texas was a completely different person to Lappi. The rage dwelling within Texas is gone and her fighting style, much more composed now, must feel stale to Lappland. Texas even got new friends. And also... Lappland can now feel Texas's fear.
I can only imagine how incredibly frustrating it must feel to lose a rival like this. Lappland doesn't like Texas - she only likes the idea of the old Texas, the idea of her rival. Someone equal in power. But someone who fears her, is not powerful in Lapplands eyes.
Fear and power are two things intertwined for Lappland. Power means to be without fear, and fear means to be without power. If you make others fear you, you become more powerful yourself.

Episode 93: Alone at Sea
Tumblr media
“But why would a fish ever bite a hook?”
Something I don’t believe I’ve mentioned here before is that both of my parents are ministers. I myself am not religious (not because of trauma or anything, my folks are great), but I was raised in the Presbyterian Church by a mom and dad who often saw things through a “hey, that could be in a sermon!” lens, and that tends to rub off on a kid. Not to oversell the value of these posts, but it’s not lost on me that I ended up writing something to share with people every Sunday. I can think of worse people to emulate.
So it’s hard for someone like me not to notice that Gems take crucial steps towards becoming Crystal Gems through some pretty baptismal circumstances. I’m not saying the symbolism is intentional, because neither aquatic rituals nor the show’s crew are uniquely Christian—Rebecca Sugar, for instance, comes from a Jewish background—but we’ve yet to see a Gem fall in love with Earth without being reborn through water. Peridot first bonds with Steven in the rain. Ruby and Sapphire land on solid ground together in the rain. Pink Diamond and Pearl first realize they need to rebel as a storm brews.
And then there’s Lapis Lazuli.
Tumblr media
Lapis literally entered the series because Steven broke a mirror, so it’s no wonder she’s misfortune personified. Bad things happen to Lapis. Bad things happen because of Lapis. And sure enough, she might control the same waters that herald rebirth for other Gems, but she’s also consumed by them. Her old life can’t get washed away because she’s still submerged. So an episode about Steven trying to reconnect her with water is bound to be a bit more complex than a joyous scene in the rain.
Alone at Sea takes us to a dark place for Steven Universe, even compared to its preceding episode, the harrowing Monster Reunion. Plenty of bad things have happened to our characters, but for the first time since the Week of Sardonyx we must confront that one of our characters has herself intentionally done a bad thing. Not day-to-day meanness or misguided acts of loyalty to Homeworld, but something truly awful. Almost as if we’re priming for some big reveal about a core character’s moral ambiguity at the end of the season.
This isn’t to say that Lapis, who also entered the series by stealing the ocean and battling the Crystal Gems, is a stranger to doing bad things. But there’s a gulf of difference between seeing magic antagonist stuff and the learning that she was abusive to her ex. Not many kids are gonna cause marine catastrophes, but way too many kids are gonna have to deal with abusive relationships one day, so Alone at Sea can’t help but feel more raw.
Tumblr media
The first moments of the episode show that Lapis is more than her suffering; she’s capable of having genuine fun, especially with Steven. She hints at her deeper issues by insisting she doesn’t deserve to be treated nicely, but she’s just as quick to snort with laughter. And even after boarding the rechristened Li’l Lappy, she’s willing to give happiness a shot. While she’s uncomfortable about dipping her toe in the water, she still finds moments of joy (particularly when it comes to horns). But more often than not, this positive outlook is hindered by her crewmates.
Greg, bless him, hurts more than he helps. He introduces himself as the guy whose leg Lapis broke, his discomfort around her water powers stifles her floundering self-confidence, and he bores her to death with regular fishing. Likewise, while Steven means well, he’s overbearing in his attempts to make Lapis happy. As awkward as it is, I’m glad the show acknowledges how easy it can be to mess up when trying to cheer up a friend in the dumps. Despite Steven’s apology about pushing too hard, we don’t get an explicit lesson about paying attention to how your friends are feeling instead of steamrolling them with fun. This isn’t a criticism: it’s okay to not get explicit lessons all the time, and it’s a nice change of pace from the show’s recent string of episodes that outright tell us the moral, even though these morals are sound.
Everything comes to a head when the rudder is thrown off, veering Li’l Lappy and her namesake off course. Steven gives that apology, but Lapis reiterates that she doesn’t deserve his help, and this time we learn why: as brutal and bullying as Jasper is, in some twisted sense Lapis learned to love their toxic relationship, using it to take all her grief and rage out on Jasper. We saw a hint of her aggression in Chille Tid, but in Jennifer Paz’s best delivery of the episode, Lapis reveals that she misses Malachite. And right on cue, the opportunity to fuse with Jasper again reveals itself.
Tumblr media
Jasper’s last lines that weren’t just shouting “YOU!” at Steven were all the way back in Jailbreak, but Kimberly Brooks is worth the wait. Her hungry correction that she was “looking for you” instead of the crew as a whole is perfect (the woman knows her way around second person pronouns), and she manages to become even scarier when she transitions from menacing to begging. All at once we see that Jasper is still monstrous, but has been changed by Lapis. Not in the way she’s saying when trying to convince Lapis to fuse again—there’s little indication that Malachite would be any healthier if she came back—but in the way this massive warrior is on her knees pleading to essentially be made a prisoner again.
From her debut, Lapis has been the most powerful being on Earth by a country mile thanks to her mastery of its most abundant resource. She effortlessly bested the Crystal Gems in Ocean Gem, and had the mental fortitude to overcome Jasper’s iron will and wrest control of Malachite. But only now, in Jasper’s pleas, does a character finally acknowledge Lapis’s power. It speaks volumes to their relationship, because it’s not just about control and manipulation: at some level, beneath all the toxicity, Jasper understands Lapis in a way others don’t. It’s not enough to make them a functional couple, but it shows that there’s an uncomfortable level of nuance even in relationships that are obviously bad. It would be much easier to write either Jasper or Lapis off as totally rotten, but Malachite wouldn’t work without a hint, however small, of real affection.
Malachite made both Jasper and Lapis feel stronger, but they weren’t strong in the real way: they were suffering, and instead of trying to fix this problem, they each learned to like the suffering. And it might be easy to place more blame on Jasper than Lapis, because even here we see how manipulative and violent she can be, but Alone at Sea doesn’t shy away from Lapis’s complicity even when presenting her in a more heroic light. Steven doesn’t call her out on her behavior, but he doesn’t exactly correct her when she reveals how terrible she’s been.
Tumblr media
Back in It Could’ve Been Great and Message Received, we got a taste of uncertainty in terms of Peridot’s future. Sure, a promo spoiled that she was staying with the Crystal Gems, but otherwise there was no telling whether she was a temporary addition. Lapis has the same quality, but amplified to a thrilling degree due to her rockier stance with the Crystal Gems. When I first watched Alone at Sea, I legitimately didn’t know what would happen next. Lapis was such a new and tenuous ally and had so much baggage with Jasper that it wouldn’t have shocked me if she had gone back to being Malachite, especially considering how underused Malachite ended up being. It gives the episode way higher stakes than, say, the Week of Sardonyx, where despite the turmoil you could pretty much guarantee that the Crystal Gems would come out of it okay. Lapis is fundamentally not okay, so anything could happen.
And that actual chance of returning to Jasper makes Lapis’s rejection so much more triumphant. She seems to sincerely consider Jasper’s offer, even when she sounds sickened by the prospect, but when given a true choice she’s able to see past her longing for that life. Malachite began with Jasper’s forceful “Just say yes,” and she can’t come back if Lapis says no. It might be alluring, but unlike Jasper, Lapis refuses to take the bait.
Tumblr media
I haven’t gushed about Aivi and Surasshu for a while, have I? I’ll be honest, a big part of that is that with the release of Steven Universe’s first soundtrack, the composers stopped releasing background tracks on the internet, and only several years later have these tracks finally popped up again. Access to their music got scarcer and scarcer, but I’m so glad that before it dried up, we got the instrumentation of this final sequence, because it’s really something.
As the clouds gather and she talks about her time fused with Jasper, we hear the buildup of Lapis’s darker theme, and the moment she reveals that she misses being Malachite, the fusion’s ominous two-note motif clangs just once. The track is soon overtaken by Jasper’s synth drum war march, with only hints of Lapis’s celesta leaking in (just like in The Return), but as Jasper begs to fuse again we get the very first quiet version Malachite’s motif (at 1:49, it’s so easy to miss); the fusion’s theme is no longer a force of nature, but a desperate plea.
A piano rendition of Lapis’s theme drowns out Jasper as she considers her options. Strings build to the same fever pitch that we got when Lapis first agreed to dance, but they fade to a quiet conclusion as she refuses to go back to Malachite. Jasper’s drums make one last appearance as she lashes out at Steven, but Lapis’s counterattack is as musically calm as her rejection. Lapis could have gotten loud, dramatic variants of her theme for her one-two punch defending herself and then Steven, and it would have sounded awesome, but instead both big moments show that she’s shunning loudness for peace. Tying all these musical themes together is impressive enough, but that restraint ties the whole scene together.
Tumblr media
Jasper is about to dominate the final arc of the season in a story that has nothing to do with Lapis, but everything to do with Lapis. It’s safe to say Jasper doesn’t handle their breakup well, and her collection of Corrupted Gems is less a matter of a soldier raising an army and more a jilted lover looking for acceptance after being abandoned for what’s likely the first time in her very long life. This is the first in a string of blows that knock Jasper down more than her fight with Garnet ever did: it’s one thing to lose, but it’s another to be rejected, and until Jasper learns to make a change, rejection is the only future she’s got.
Lapis goes right back to being an angsty teen after this, despite getting more comfortable around Peridot. But Alone at Sea makes me appreciate her eventual abandonment of Earth when the going gets tough again, because while it’s not the right thing to do, it makes sense that a character with massive unresolved trauma would follow the most defensive instincts possible to avoid further pain. I’m not huge on the show just saying Lapis did something awful and not following it up with much soul-searching, but she does plenty of work outside of Jasper and perhaps it’s for the best that she focused on less toxic parts of her life for self-improvement.
The big bummer of Lapis and Jasper’s story is that it never really resolves: even when Jasper halfway reforms, she and Lapis will never share a screen again, let alone have a conversation. I’m not saying I want a reconciliation, but apology is good for the soul, so I hope that someday Little Homeworld sees a moment where Lapis says she’s sorry for her part in Malachite’s agony, even if Jasper was worse.
Still, seeing Lapis refuse to re-fuse still works as a resolution to the episode, if not the arc. And she does work on her issues in other ways, even if Jasper doesn’t. But even though this is their last interaction in the series, admitting your mistakes and choosing not to repeat them is itself a noble step.
I’ve never been to this…how do you say…school?
She’s not even in the episode, but Pearl and her swim cap are the winner of this entry. Does nobody else care about their hair?
Tumblr media
We’re the one, we’re the ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!
This is our second excellent feel-bad episode in a row. We may not ever get an acknowledgement about the abusive nature of Lars and Sadie’s relationship in Island Adventure, but at least we have this episode addressing the issue.
(Bear in mind I’m not champing at the bit for more abusive relationships in children’s media, but if you’re going to have them, I just think it’s irresponsible not to use them as an educational tool, is all.)
