The In-Depth Look at Julie-Su Part 11: Sonic the Hedgehog Issues 109, 114, 115 & 118

Previously we ended on the introduction of Knuckles & Julie-Su's future AU daughter Lara-Su. It may sound a interesting twist to the ongoing story but in reality it's not. Unlike Silver in Sonic 2006 Lara-Su has practically no impact on the story. You could take her out and the story would still work as established.

Anyway she goes to a meeting that consists of the Dark Legion along with Knuckles and a council of utterly forgettable regular echidnas. There she witnesses what appears to be Knuckles getting shot.

Afterwards Lara-Su leaves the scene before Knuckles reveals that he was playing possum. A heartbroken Lara-Su assumes he's dead and pops back into the AU future. There we see Julie-Su and get this out of left turn reveal.

Even though this seems like a neat setup to continue on with this is the last we see of it. We don't get to see tough future soldier Julie-Su fight a evil despot version of Knuckles with her daughter. Personally I would have loved if the story continued on with this plotline over the meandering continuation of the story that does happen. It's also the last we see of Lara-Su in the Green Knuckles arc. She does not show up or is mentioned again.

Back to the canon timeline the we see Julie-Su as she is introduced to a free apartment that Knuckles set up for her and her parents.

It's nice that Knuckles carried in her suitcases for her.

We also finally get to see the Chaotix again who noticed Dimitri being taken away, his robotic body is failing him. Julie-Su fights with Vector and delivers this ominous warning about what would happen should Dimitri die.

In issue #115 not much happens but we do get this nice shipping moment.

In issue #118 Green Knuckles faces off against Mammoth Mogul a seemingly immortal villain that has appeared on and off throughout various Sonic & Knuckles issues over the years.

During their battle Knuckles has I don't know too much green energy or something and dies after unleashing it in a massive blast.

Next up the conclusion of the Green Knuckles Arc.

Apparently the Lara-Su Chronicles are actually going to come out soon which is kind of impressive. The announcement inspired me to try and re-design Lara Su in my own style, since Penders draws much differently than I would. And with much different artistic choices.

Seriously, if you have some free time, why not trying to redesign Lara-Su yourself?

Do you have any more ideas for Ruby, the Shadally kid?

Oh man, I haven't thought about Ruby in a while. I had a lot of ideas back when I first thought her up but I can't remember half of them. :P

I think the original idea I had for her was that due to the whole cosmic reset stuff with the Super Genesis Wave, Ruby's universe got erased but she somehow managed to survive, escaped into another universe. Can't remember were I was going with that tho...

Am now thinking of a story wherein she, Lara-su and a handful of other mismatched characters escape the genesis wave and are forced to team up in order to restore the Multiverse.

Lara-su is faced with a morel dilemma when she is given the opportunity to reset her entire timeline by preemptively fixing the problems that would cause the timeline to be altered in the first place. But that would also mean erasing the new timeline entirely and everything she has gained as a result. Not to mention the new restored timeline would likely not be the same as the original one either.

Meanwhile, the moment she realises it's possible, Ruby has but one single desire: to reset her timeline ensuring her father remains as the one and only King of Mobius! She will make it so the coup never happens so everything can go back to way things were before!

This of course puts the girls at odds with each other, especially considering they were already on bad terms what with Lara-su being the one who defeated Shadow. Then there's the fact that if Lara-su goes through with her plan to fix the timeline she'd effectively be erasing Ruby from existence altogether.

I feel like Silver and maybe a couple of the No-Zone cops would be part of this little make-shift team. Alongside a couple of other hero and villain characters. The heroes are torn between restoring the Multiverse as is, or fixing everything and causing a full reset, potentially resulting in a much better outcome but at the cost of the current timelines. The villains of course want to restore the multiverse as well (y'know, coz they live there) but also want to reset their universes timelines for their own selfish/nefarious purposes.

A band of misfits forced to be unlikely allies on an epic multi-dimensional space adventure! XD

I bought it.

I preordered the Lara-Su Chronicles.

To say I bought it as a hate-read would be entirely incorrect. But I won’t obscure the fact that I don’t like Penders. I think this dude is an asshole. The real best way to put it would be… genuine curiosity based on my nostalgia for the original comics. And while I think he’s an asshole, I don’t hate him. Both can exist I think.

I want to see how he connects it to Archie. I want it for archive purposes, even if it isn’t good. I want to see what he actually does with this thing and these characters. Is it still a Sonic comic? He keeps connecting it to the Sonic comics. So maybe. Penders also just makes weird decisions both artistically and writing wise. I kinda want to see how that pans out in a not patronizing way. I want to see what he changes about characters and lore. Has his writing style changed now that he’s not under as many restrictions? He’s free to write what he wants in this setting. That’s going to be fascinating! And I’m not even expecting to hate it. I very much expect it to be a meh nothing experience. But I want to know for sure. In fact I am hoping this experience is as bizarre as it looks. For better or worse.

And if it’s good I’ll be as honest about that as I am the bad.

And if I feel that way why would I buy it all? Simple. I’m the lore lady. The “I’ve read it all” lady. I like being an archivist for Sonic works and this applies. I want to read everything both obscure and not. Hell, I’ll buy stuff just for the flavor text. (Like those Amy tarot cards coming up.) And in my time with “fan” works, stuff like this gets pricey later because there aren’t typically reprints. If I’m wrong that’s okay. And if I’m right then… that’s okay too. Ha ha.

But expect several reviews when this thing finally ships to my doorstep. I’ll cover it all so you can enjoy it by proxy.

Okay, yeah- that's Lara-Su, kid of Knux and Julie-Su. I was kinda hoping she'd be Knuckles have sibling instead (that would've been more fun, in my opinion), but yeah- good to know for certain.

Also, YAY! CHAOTIX AGAIN! Seriously, how long has it been???

The In-Depth Look at Julie-Su Part 10: Sonic the Hedgehog Issues 99-102 & 106

Now we get to my least favorite part which I like to call the Green Knuckles Saga. Not a lot happens and what does gets stretched out to a absurd degree. Looking back on it I thought Knuckles was green for around 6-8 months. I turned out to be way wrong because it starts at Issue 90 and doesn't end until issue 125. That's almost three years of this. A helpful visual to remember is the cover itself to issue #90 is also covered in green.

Julie-Su's not there when Knuckles does turn green. It's due to some sort of techno babble science explosion. As a result of being caught in the blast he gets new powers and messes around quite a bit. We get back to Julie in Issue 99 which shows her kidnapping from SSS#14.

She is still in captivity along with her foster parents. The odd part is that Floren-Ca looks completely different, even though she was last seen in SSS#14 a story that Penders also wrote.

She gets reunited with green Knuckles.

There is a very positive note that I almost forgot to mention from here on out we will often see a artist switch from Penders to Dawn Best whose rendition of Knuckles and Julie-Su are absolutely adorable.

Back to the story we see Julie-Su shout exposition to anyone who didn't read Knuckles issue 17 & 18.

Going nowhere is also a good description for this arc.

From here on out Knuckles tries various things to get the best route/ending. He fails repeatedly and ends up back where he started. Julie-Su doesn't really get much to do beside hang around and watch.

Although it seems like I'm missing a part from Knuckles being a robot to embracing Julie and telling her that everything's okay, it's actually how it happened in issue 102. It struck me odd that Knuckles is interacting with Julie as if she just reacted to seeing him robotized even though no such scene occur.

So Knuckles continues using his powers to no avail when a new character in issue 106 shows up for the first time.

Coming up time travel and not much else sadly.
