This is beautiful. A still from Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019), a breathtaking film about the harsh faults and realities of gentrification, specifically in San Francisco. The city that was once full of historic neighborhoods is forcing natives, majority being members of the Black community, out of their sacred homes. The film particularly highlights the Fillmore District which was once known as the Harlem of the West. Gentrification as most of us know is a real issue but it becomes rapidly more evident in the blink of an eye. Inspired by the true narrative of Fillmore District native & lead actor Jimmy Fails, this film is a catalyst for an initiative much larger than the screen could capture. Last Black Man in San Francisco is more than a movie, it is a poetic experience. I have never been to San Fran but after watching this film, I feel like I have. The story couldn't be more authentic, being directed and co-writen by San Francisco natives @technicolor_talbot and his childhood friend @jimmiefailsiv who plays himself in the film. The incredibly beautiful cinematography by @knucklewood drives you through the city, telling a story much more about a place than a character. This film was made possible by several independent producers, a Kickstarter, @planbentertainment , and @a24 . The cast has everyone from big stars like #dannyglover and #robmorgan as well as local, first-time San Francisco actors. The film has already won several awards for first-time filmmakers, and I'm sure it will continue to win even more. This film is a poetic ode to San Francisco that addresses gentrification, local characters, male friendships, vulnerability, feeling like an outsider, community, and so much more. Got to see @lastblackmansf last night at The Roxie in San Francisco Featuring Jimmie Fails & Jonathan Majors. This movie tugged at emotions in soul that my body didn't know were there with considerable relatability in terms of gentrification. In a lane of its own it still adds to the cannon of this pending explosion of the black experience in The Bay, stacked stop Boots Riley's #SorryToBotherYou.
