wait this is actually all really good, useful advice, thank yall so much (especially re: the prismatic shard, because i Definitely would’ve given that to the museum under my “FIRSTBORN GOES TO THE OWL” animal crossing policy otherwise)! In case anyone is wondering what my fave Control fic is, it’s still Full of Stars by @laudanine

And I don’t know if my tribute does it justice but I finally finished my 3 hour podfic of it

And I have thoughts on podfics now …

Podfics are a labor of love. A tribute that goes beyond fanart. A ‘this is maybe going to get two kudos for the dozen hours of vocalizing and editing, but who cares’ and this one isn’t even that long. But believe me when I say that reading a story aloud, hearing it pour forth in your own cursed character tinted voice will change how you interpret a scene, a theme, a character relationship. You’ll unearth feelings. You’ll realize aspects that your eyes glanced over when you’re rereading a paragraph for the fourth time because your lips keep fudging together words—that take is too nasally, too fast, nope don’t breathe there and oh no! the cat sneezed—read that whole section again. I thought I knew my fave fanfic. Beat by beat, I thought I had the gist memorized. I thought I understood it. Well, I got to know it all over again, got to fall in love with the story all over again, and this time something wonderful might have actually sunk in between my ribs. How deeply prosody influences text.

If you haven’t recorded yourself reading a chapter of a favorite story ( even if you hate your speaking voice, like me), if you want to fall in love with that amazing fanfic that you’ve read countless times…the plot, the clever words, the funny bits, if you want to inhabit the burning tension between those beloved characters all over again; give podficing a try. It’s a uniquely rewarding experience.

18.  What is a line/scene you’re really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for that scene.

I actually had to wrack my brain for this a little, but... 

In “Touch Of Rapture” chapter one (it’s an Alan Wake fic I intend to finish someday), there’s this rather simple scene of Mr. Scratch standing in the middle of the desert day with an umbrella and a clown mask, to avoid Alan realizing they’re doubles (and also to avoid sunlight which would kill him)... and even though it’s ridiculous, I feel like that scene encapsulates how absolutely ridiculous I can get with my writing and yet still I feel proud of that scene so much? I love it.

The exchange between the writer and the killer is so fun for me at that moment, I love that fic so much. It’s just Mr. Scratch for once having to solve a problem he caused and he’s falling apart, because how do you do that without murder? And Wake just desperately needs to find a way to deal with the no memory and weirdness factors. I’m actually proud of that whole fic so far. I hope I can finish another chapter for it sometime, but it’s been sitting in my WIP folder for a while now... I love the concept, even if it’s been overdone to hell.

But this part the most just kills me: 

Annoyed about being kept in the dark, Alan’s hand slowly rose to take off the mask, but then the other spoke, stopping him in the spot.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you… You might not like what you see.”

CONTROL’s Costume Direction

Jesse’s Suave new costume shown in the upcoming AWE DLC prompted me to write this post.

So apparently dedicated costume designers are rare in game development. Remedy’s Costume designer is Heli Salomaa.

Here is her award-winning master thesis titled, “Video Games and Costume Art - Digitalizing Analogue Methods of Costume Design”

An article from her Alma Mater Aalto University describes her journey to costume design in gaming:

“I’ve been a gamer since I was ten. Even back then, I’d wonder who designed the costumes worn by game characters. The video game industry felt distant, however, as I prefer to make things with my hands,” says Heli Salomaa. She recently graduated from the costume design Master’s programme at Aalto University.

“I had worked on theatre and performance costumes prior to my studies, but as a person I crave the new and wanted to test the boundaries of costume design. My studies introduced me to laser cutters and 3D printers at the University’s Fablab, so I began to integrate these methods into my costume designs. At Fablab I realised that technology isn’t so hard after all. The video game industry no longer felt like a utopian dream, it was a potential workplace instead.”

After this insight, Heli Salomaa freshened up her CV. A couple of years ago, she took part in the Aalto in the Game fair, and then things started happening rapidly. She met a recruiter from Remedy Entertainment, a producer of realistic big-budget AAA video games, at the fair and spoke about her interest in getting involved in game character design.

Her timing was impeccable; Remedy’s previous game, Quantum Break, had just been released and a new game called Control, which was scheduled for release in 2019, was in its early design stages. Remedy’s lead character artist had already suggested getting help for designing the clothing of the game’s characters. Salomaa was directed to speak with him, and started working as a costume artist a few months later.

Back in 2019, she gave a lecture in Game Developers Conference titled “Costume in Games: Integrating a Costume Designer into the Character Pipeline” which was based on her work in Control. I wish we could actually watch it, but unfortunately, it’s behind GDC’s paywall. However, GDC was kind enough to make the lecture slide available for all. Nevertheless, The Sudden Stop and 4gamer.net has made excellent summaries of the presentation.

Salomaa has been interviewed quite a few times about her work in Control as well.

5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?

I tend not to say "never," but I sense the window for me to actually write a couple of cute FATT drabbles is passing. Those would have been Marn/Bucho and Braun/Valence. I also wonder whether my time of writing current-season D2 stories is at an end; aside from some curiosity about Nezarec and what my OCs are up to, I'm mostly interested in Shadowkeep and earlier for fic ideas.

6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?

Our Lady of Situations (Eris/Toland) by @illumynare is truly like an every six months affair. I also reread this cute Aloy/Sylens fic. (If that person has a Tumblr, I can't find it.) I reread this funny Digimon Tamers fic by @laryna6, and Otter's A Kiss in the Court (Eris/Toland), and @laudanine's exquisitely written journey with me into the Prey fever dream (Morgan/Dahl).

18. What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve written in a fic?

Egad, the recency bias ... The utter inability to remember anything I've ever written ... I am generally proud of Infinite Chess' chess metaphor.

So these are the items I would drop as loot  when defeated in battle:

1. Drumsticks. Lots of drumsticks. :)

2. Loose leaf tea. Enjoy the mystery of some of these teas that lack identifying labels! Also, have a manatee.

3. Tiny Dinos. I find these all over my lair everyday. Sometimes my feet encounter them.

4. Acrylic paint palettes that need a good cleaning.
