Melrose Place: Back From the Ashes with Original Stars Get ready for a blast from the past! The iconic 90s drama Melrose Place is reportedly getting a revival, bringing back some of the original characters we loved (and maybe even loved to hate). Over 30 years after the show's debut, CBS Studios is developing a new version of Melrose Place. The exciting part? Three of the show's most recognizable stars, Heather Locklear, Laura Leighton, and Daphne Zuniga, are already attached to reprise their roles. The new series will pick up where life left off for these former neighbours and friends. But instead of poolside cocktails and carefree living, they'll be reunited under sad circumstances – the sudden death of one of their closest companions. This tragic event will undoubtedly stir up a potent mix of emotions. Imagine a pressure cooker filled with old traumas, rekindled romances, and long-simmering resentments. Variety describes the upcoming drama as "chaotic," reminiscent of the show's original wild spirit, but with a fresh, modern take. A little refresher for those who might not remember the original Melrose Place: Created by Darren Star (who also brought us Sex and the City), the show was a spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210. It followed young adults living in a trendy apartment complex in West Hollywood, California. The original Melrose Place ran for seven seasons on Fox, from 1992 to 1999, captivating audiences with its primetime soap opera blend of romance, betrayal, and outrageous schemes. The show boasted a large ensemble cast, including Thomas Calabro, Josie Bissett, Andrew Shue, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Grant Show, Doug Savant, Vanessa Williams, and Amy Locane. Zuniga, now 61, joined the show in its first season as Jo Reynolds, a photographer who fled a tumultuous marriage. Locklear, 62, became a fan favourite with her portrayal of Amanda Woodward, the ruthless and ambitious boss who brought a healthy dose of villainy to the series. Interestingly, Locklear initially appeared in a guest role but quickly became a regular cast member, although she was still billed as a "special guest star" for most of the show's run. Leighton, 55, also started as a guest star, playing Sydney Andrews, the mischievous younger sister of Bissett's character. Her popularity with viewers led to her being upgraded to a series regular in season 3. Over the years, Melrose Place also featured other actors who became household names, including Marcia Cross, Lisa Rinna, Jack Wagner, Kelly Rutherford, Kristin Davis, and Alyssa Milano. There was a previous attempt to revive Melrose Place in 2009. That version, which aired on The CW, focused on a new generation of residents and only lasted for one season. While some of the original cast, including Locklear, Leighton, and Zuniga, made cameo appearances, it wasn't enough to recapture the magic of the original. It's also worth noting that Leighton's character met her demise in both the original series and the 2009 revival, so it will be interesting to see how the writers handle her return. Lauren Gussis, the creator and executive producer of the Netflix series Insatiable, is on board to write the new Melrose Place. There's also good news for fans who are hoping to see more familiar faces – Deadline reports that additional original cast members are expected to join the revival. So, mark your calendars! The residents of Melrose Place are about to be back in our living rooms, ready to reignite the drama and remind us why we fell in love with the show in the first place.

Democracy Now!
January 17, 2020
From the article:
In Honduras, a new report by the Violence Observatory at the Honduran National Autonomous University says that at least 15 women have been murdered in the first 14 days of this year. Violence against women, LGBTQ people, indigenous leaders and environmental activists has skyrocketed in Honduras under the U.S.-backed government of President Juan Orlando Hernández. The report comes nearly four years after the Honduran indigenous environmental activist Berta Cáceres was shot dead inside her home in La Esperanza, Honduras, by hired hitmen. Last month in the capital of Tegucigalpa, seven men were sentenced to up to 50 years in prison for her killing in March 2016. At the time of her assassination, Cáceres had been fighting the construction of a major hydroelectric dam on the Gualcarque River on sacred Lenca land in southwestern Honduras. In November 2018, a court ruled that Cáceres’s killing was ordered by executives of the Honduran company behind the Agua Zarca dam, known as DESA, who hired the convicted hitmen. Cáceres won the Goldman Environmental Prize for her work protecting indigenous communities and for her environmental justice campaign against the massive dam in 2015. In December, we sat down with one of her daughters, Laura Zúñiga Cáceres, in Madrid, Spain, where she was receiving a human rights award. “This is a late conviction. It has been almost four years of seeking justice. It is the product of a rather difficult and painful process that has been putting us as victims in direct dispute with a murderous and aggressive state, and they produced the minimum consequences that the state could have given,” Zúñiga Cáceres says.
