What Does 25 to life Mean?

In legal terminology, a prisoner condemned to life imprisonment but entitled to parole after spending 25 years is said to be serving a “25 to life” sentence. It provides a means of establishing a certain minimum sentence without eliminating the possibility of parole release.

Although the sentence may formally call for 25 years of incarceration before granting parole, this may occasionally depend on the conditions of the prison population, a prisoner’s behavior, or other considerations. However, if parole is refused, the sentence can go on until the inmate dies.

The punishment may simply be stated as a “life sentence” in cases where the crime was especially atrocious, and parole is not an option.

Lillibetbunny: Miss Brent, I’m so delighted to have you here. I’ve always adored you for all that you’ve done!

Margaret Brent: Thank you. You are an adorable bunny.

Lillibetbunny (blushes): aww…thank you soo much! Okay, ahem, can you tell us about your family?

Margaret Brent: I was one of the thirteen children born to Richard and Elizabeth Brent and grew up in a Catholic family in Gloucestershire England. I enjoyed a basic education and spent my time indulging in needlework.

Lillibetbunny: yes… but you moved to Maryland sometime later, right? That’s where you appeared in court.

Margaret Brent: My siblings and I moved to Maryland when I was 37, where we could practise and promote our religion without penalty, unlike England.

Lillbetbunny (nods): Can you tell us about your court experience in Maryland?

Margaret Brent: Of course. My sister and I owned and managed our property by ourselves as we were granted land by Lord Baltimore, our cousin. For that reason, I had to appear frequently before the court to file suits against my debtors.

Margaret Brent: I soon gained the trust of Lord Baltimore’s brother, Governor Calvert and helped him with his affairs. When a Protestant ship captain attacked the Catholic settlers in Maryland in 1645, Governor Calvert fled to Virginia, where he hired a group soldiers. He had no way to pay them and was left with no choice but to pledge his estate and mine as security for their wages.

Margarent Brent: Unfortunately, Governor Calvert became ill and died shortly after his return. On his deathbed, he named me in charge of paying his debts. However, there was not enough money left for the soldiers after I paid the governor’s other debts. To make things worse, I couldn’t sell his land under the English law. The soldiers were threatening to rebel.

Margaret Brent: Finally, I decided to go before the all-male Assembly and asked for two votes—one for myself as a landowner and one as executor of Calvert’s will. I wanted convince them to pass a tax to help pay the disgruntled soldiers. My petition was debated for several hours, but it was ultimately denied.

Margaret Brent: I wouldn’t give up. I went to the Court and asked if I could be Lord Baltimore’s attorney in his brother’s, the governor, place. My request was granted and I sold some of Lord Baltimore’s cattle to pay the solders.

Lillibetbunny: Your act was bold and courageous, and your life was remarkable for a woman of the 17th century.

Margaret Brent: Thank you, I do regret not succeeding in becoming the first woman in America to gain the right to vote.

Lillibetbunny: What you did was still amazing, you helped to protect the stability of Maryland. You were involved in over 100 court cases and you were a major landowner. You deserve recognition and praise for your independance and determination!
