The feeling of physical and emotional isolation. Tension, depression, alcoholism, domestic conflicts and violence, the morbid obsession for the virus news and detachment from reality. The hoarding run for: toilet paper, wine, tinned food and hand sanitiser. The hysteria of ones waiting for the worse and those who believe in their alienation that nothing is really happen, this is just an economical plot. AN AFTERNOON FLANEURING: I walked for 11 miles around the City of London yesterday. It was my first trip to the capital in three months - I’d had to go up for a time-sensitive work meeting to discuss and approve a project that could only be done in situ. I didn’t want to go on the tube, so I walked from London Bridge to Hackney, and afterwards faced the question of what to do in a city where everything is shut: every shop, every venue. And so I met my friend Nick - an enthusiast for city walks - and we walked back to London Bridge through empty streets looking at buildings I’d never looked at before, or perhaps never noticed due to all the traffic and bustle. Starting in Hackney, we took in Shoreditch Church @shoreditchchurch by George Dance; Arnold Circus (where @thecharlieporter was volunteering in the gardens); the Honourable Artillery Company @the_hac (looking like a mini Windsor Castle); Bunhill Fields Burial Ground; the modernist 100 Curtain Road (now part of @lcflondon_ ); 90 Finsbury Square by @ericparryarchitects ; Edwin Lutyen’s Britannia House; the Bank of England; Hawksmoore’s St Mary Woolnorth; 20 Fenchurch Street (aka the Walkie Talkie) by @rva_ny @officialrafaelvinoly and finally the Monument to the Great Fire of London, before I took the pretty much empty train home to the seaside. MINIATURE CAPSULE COLLECTION | Some glimpse of a festive fashion film where @sanyuktashrestha was invited to create miniature ball gowns in collaboration with @thecarltontowerjumeirah x @lcflondon_ ❤ The launch event revealed our festive miniature capsule collection of couture dresses along with other designers inspired by The Carlton Tower Jumeirah’s illustrious history. “A childhood dream project as I always loved creating mini doll creations since I was 7 years old. The nostalgia of my childhood couturier came alive when I was invited among other designers @ual_alumni from prestigious @unioftheartslondon London College of Fashion to collaborate with 'The Carlton Tower Jumeirah hotel' and commissioned to design and create 25 ball gowns which then handcrafted into the two and a half thousand hand made miniature ball gowns featured as miniature couture dolls, to form part of a Christmas fashion advent calendar for the festive season. So thank you to all the amazing team involved on this project, it was a tremendous joy to meet you all and to celebrate our history of miniature couture fashion. Lockdown has been an opportunity to stay home for many of us and for me particularly a great way to find treasures at home. Photos are my biggest treasure! I found this picture of me taken in 2001 when I was studying pattern cutting during my Foundation Course in Art and Design at London College of Fashion . I was living in a flat share with two taxi drivers and another lodger in Kings Cross, in central London ( at the time not the best part of Central London though 😅). In this photo, I look so happy and was modelling my latest creation - we might have been given some scrap fabric project!- I still remember being so proud of my no-way-forgiving-nothing-at-all kind of top which I was modelling as some kind of haute couture piece just come out of a chic couturier studio... it always made me so happy to make things as it still does, which is why I do what I do! BODY OF EVIDENCE // A Personal Excavation new photo story for @vogueitalia explores the idea of how hidden histories or forgotten historical narratives can be used to justify the dehumanisation and vilification of the Other. Inspired by classical Antiquity and the idea of ruins as a trace of the past and a metaphor for fragmented evidence and discovery, I set out to reframe a vision of the past, placing the black silhouette away from distorted historical myths, from tales of exoticism and barbarism, away from the reductive narrative of the slave trade. By creating a subtle objecting gaze, I attempted to fix blackness and the black body in almost a liminal state, elevating them to the realm of reimagined artefacts and ancestry.
