From local to global by @alefilizzola Circular economy in the epicentre of the traditional handcrafted fashion and independent designers in Minas Gerais / Brazil. Belo Horizonte, Sete Lagoas and Itabira. July/August 2020. I went to Brazil in 2020 investigating the local and traditional fashion production around the city of Belo Horizonte / Minas Gerais. My research led me to contact independent designers and community associations working with artisanal authenticity and having their production strongly grounded in the aspects of the circular economy. Their fashion production is influenced by the mindset of repairing, remaking, redesigning, up-cycling and finding new and unexpected uses for recycled and otherwise wasted materials. Remexe @remexefavelinha is a community project from Vila Novo São Lucas which is one of the eight favelas of the “Aglomerado da Serra” in the city of Belo Horizonte / Brazil. They are a local brand originated as a way to increase the income of the community dwellers. As a raw material they work with up-cycled clothes and their production is guided by the principles of circular design. The garments created are highly fashionable and trendy. Launched in 2017, Remexe is an awarded project and a fast growing brand which is reaching national and international acknowledgement and being celebrated as a sustainable case of success. The wise ones: Hear no evil, say no evil, see no evil. This photo-essay is about how isolation impacts people in different ways during the pandemic. Anxiety with bits of surrealism and madness. The feeling of physical and emotional isolation. Tension, depression, alcoholism, domestic conflicts and violence, the morbid obsession for the virus news and detachment from reality. The hoarding run for: toilet paper, wine, tinned food and hand sanitiser. The hysteria of ones waiting for the worse and those who believe in their alienation that nothing is really happen, this is just an economical plot. In between there will be those confused about the present and insecure about the future, but, nevertheless, trying to carry on with their life routines in the new confined reality. - Maybe wearing colourful clothes or party outfits might help to cheer the mood up, isn’t it?
