From local to global by @alefilizzola Circular economy in the epicentre of the traditional handcrafted fashion and independent designers in Minas Gerais / Brazil. Belo Horizonte, Sete Lagoas and Itabira. July/August 2020. I went to Brazil in 2020 investigating the local and traditional fashion production around the city of Belo Horizonte / Minas Gerais. My research led me to contact independent designers and community associations working with artisanal authenticity and having their production strongly grounded in the aspects of the circular economy. Their fashion production is influenced by the mindset of repairing, remaking, redesigning, up-cycling and finding new and unexpected uses for recycled and otherwise wasted materials. They produce unique pieces based in their cultural heritage but speaking to local and global audiences. Into The Rose Garden. The story explores the arrival of human Into The Rose Garden, Heaven, After being effected mentally and physically. Clinical white attires with geometric shapes and sharp line silhouette juxtaposed with organic and softer skirts are hand painted in three primary colour. The three stages of moods. Red for Anger. Yellow for Confusion. Blue for Depression. The Butterfly Lips mask is a representation of the face coverings places with a butterfly at the lips which explores the chaos theory of The Butterfly Effect: small things can have non-linear impacts on a complex system in our collection. In reflection of pandemic this being where someone breath being a cause of someone death. The collection is sustainable and explores zero waist pattern cutting and all items used are biodegradable. All fabric was sponsored in support by local fabric shops as we wanted to support them by advertising their business at London Fashion Week. The entire collection is a proof of the fashion community that when sometime seen crude and trivial actually is the opposite and knows how to adapt and support by self sustaining. The collection is also a testament of the fashion community. It’s proof of the community coming together to help each other and motivate one another in trying times. It’s an evidence of how resourceful and adaptable fashion community really is. It was a pleasure working with an amazingly talented team of creatives. We all came together created something beautiful executing this vision and story in its most sublime form. Remexe @remexefavelinha is a community project from Vila Novo São Lucas which is one of the eight favelas of the “Aglomerado da Serra” in the city of Belo Horizonte / Brazil. They are a local brand originated as a way to increase the income of the community dwellers. As a raw material they work with up-cycled clothes and their production is guided by the principles of circular design. The garments created are highly fashionable and trendy. Launched in 2017, Remexe is an awarded project and a fast growing brand which is reaching national and international acknowledgement and being celebrated as a sustainable case of success. This is an image created from macro-photography of flowers, roots, vines and other distorted organic forms. After that, a series of studies with cyanotype emulsion over etching paper were conducted. Then, the original photo was given a digital cyanotype treatment and assembled as a tile to form symmetric mosaic patterns from the initial contorted and chaotic shapes.
