Le Monocle (1920s-1940s)
It was opened by Lulu de Montparnasse in the Montmartre area, which at that time was the main gathering place for Parisian lesbians. As historian Florence Tamagne explains, lesbians during that time were often found sitting together at Montmartre’s “outdoor cafes or dancing at the Moulin Rouge”. As for Le Monocle, “All the women there dressed as men, in Tuxedos, and wore their hair in a bob”.
The name Le Monocle derived from a fad at the time where women who identified as lesbian would sport a monocle to indicate sexual preference. The writer Colette once observed the fad by describing women in the area as “often affecting a monocle and a white carnation in the buttonhole”. A monocle was something of a lesbian “uniform” in those days.
Le Monocle stayed open from the 1920s through the early 1940s. After the Nazi occupation of France, the nightclub was closed and homosexuals were persecuted. Years later the club was reopened by a new owner, but the golden age of Le Monocle had ended.

In Act 2 of Lempicka when Tamara and Rafaela enter Le Monocle for the first time they look around at all the women together and Rafaela says “a room full of nothing but US” and Tamara says “let’s never leave” and guys I just went to a lesbian bar for the first time (okay it’s actually a deli but they turn it into a lesbian bar at night) and GUYS? That is the safest I have ever felt out drinking and dancing and I felt so natural and I was surrounded by other queer women and that’s. That’s the first actual queer space I’ve been to in YEARS and especially post-pandemic. And I’m feeling such an overwhelming mix of emotions right now because I didn’t realize how isolated I felt from the queer community in my day to day life (ie not online). I just. God.
Dedicated queer spaces are so important. Lesbian bars are so important. This is the only one I’ve been to but I’m VERY aware that these days there are fewer and fewer of them but I just. I didn’t know how badly this kind of place and experience and connection to community was missing from my life until I suddenly had it tonight.

Siedlung Halen, Atelier 5, 1961
“More than 50 years on, it’s one of the most successful housing estates in existence“
PARKOUR HALENSIEDLUNG (2007), SIEDLUNG HALEN (2010)
These videos offer two perspectives on the iconic Halen development - one looks at history and design detail, while in the other its massing, human scale, and playfulness are demonstrated through parkour.
The 79-home Swiss project was designed by 5 young architects on a forested site overlooking a river, 15 minutes cycle ride from Bern. The land had been intended for their own houses, until costs necessitated a higher density. Communal facilities such as the swimming pool, playground and community hall have shared ownership, and the internal streets are pedestrianised. For additional reading, this feature in Monocle (quoted above) includes short profiles of some of the residents. They reflect the fact that the buildings, arranged on a slope with high walls between gardens, seem to have found a sweet spot between community and privacy. As one resident says: “You can sunbathe on the top floor balcony as God intended without anyone seeing.”
Perhaps part of Halen's success lies in how well it resolves two areas of tension in our relationship to spaces. Firstly the public/private balance, something like what Le Corbusier referred to as "silence, solitude, but also daily contact with mortals.” And secondly, Prospect Refuge theory, in which we crave immersion within nature, but also shelter from it - a view of the surrounding landscape, but also a feeling of enclosure and protection.

There was a gorgeous dyke/trans bar called "Le Monocle" in 1930s Paris. Monocles were a bit like wearing a pride flag among the queer people assigned female at the time. Although the Nazis shut down the bar during the war, many patrons stayed in touch for years after. 🧐

Patrons enjoy Le Monocle, one of the earliest and most famous lesbian bars of the 20's and 30's. The name, Le Monocle, came from a trend adopted by the lesbian community of the day, to sport a monocle along with their tuxedo and cropped hairstyle. Wearing a monocle as a woman in those days was a little bit like flying the gay flag. The bar was located in the Montmartre district of Paris.
