Me: "Yeah, I enjoyed those episodes, but I'm still not feeling the Star Wars anymore. It's really just not for me..."
Star Wars: "Okay, but what if we make a show where a bunch of kids accidentally get launched into space and none of them actually knows how to fly the ship, so they're lost lightyears away from home?"

tbh i don’t think lyanna and sansa share many (if any) parallels, and in many aspects, lyanna serves as a narrative foil to sansa. robert baratheon directly connected his unfulfilled betrothal with lyanna to joffrey and sansa’s betrothal, and we all know how that went. sansa, who was fooled by the boy she was betrothed to, refused to look beyond the surface until it was too late, vs lyanna, who was able to see beyond the surface and took actions to prevent her fate. lyanna became her own knight in shining armor and played with swords, while sansa is thee princess in the tower who wanted everything to be pretty. lyanna, the girl with the sword and shield who protected the weak, put herself in bodily harm for someone she barely knew, which caused the mad king to go after her, vs sansa, the girl who sided with cersei, a character that parallels the mad king, and joffrey, a cruel prince, ultimately dooming innocents and disconnecting herself from her stark identity in the process. it’s true that sansa has been learning to look beyond the surface and extend kindness to the ‘others,’ but how does this actually parallel lyanna? how is having the kindness trait a parallel? it’s also true that sansa does eventually end up protecting others, but i’m once again not sure if i’d call that a true parallel. and imo, sansa is an idealist, which is something i love about her, but i think lyanna was a realist who believed in chivalry and honor despite it all. as i see it, sansa will believe in chivalry and honor despite it all as well, but they’re still foils due to their starkly different starting points. and though it’s true that they are both connected to songs, sansa is a singer who sings to people who ask while lyanna isn’t stated to be one. instead, lyanna had a relationship with a famous singer, which again places them as foils. i’ve digressed quite a bit here and there, so to end things off, i want to say that while both disappeared with ‘bael’ figures, i consider them foils here as well because lyanna was doomed, but i pray and believe that sansa is not. and for god’s sake, let’s hope petyr baelish never touches sansa again. let’s also hope that sansa returns to winterfell alive, even if she gets there as a living Stone. lyanna wasn’t so lucky, returning dead and all.

That BTAS clip just reminds me of how far we have come, and not in a good way. The BTAS Batman is so compassionate, he doesn't kill because it's never too late to turn it around and he fights to save people. The new versions of him floating around out there are deranged man-children who just like to hurt people.
A couple of years ago I would've said something similar! Around the time of the Snyder films and a couple of the Arkham video games era it wasn't in the popular perception that Batman was kind, compassionate, or humanized outside of a crime-fighting machine.
Thankfully though (and it helps that Bats is such an oversaturated character that has a ton of adaptations and comics going on) there's some pretty good modern Bat media that portray him in a more humanizing light, even in unflattering ways. My personal recent faves are Batman Unburied, Batman Audio Adventures, and the Telltale Batman games! And of course 2022 Battison~
That Sandman quote where good stories return to their best forms eventually~!

It's going to be a really long post [under a read more] but I'm making Raaxo: Diabolik x Amnesia profile! It may take a while since Jojo and I are still straightening stuff out but it makes me super happy and excited, hehe.
Things I can say: our verse takes place in a parallel universe that Heroine and Orion fell into, thus canon will be changed!

things I’m excited for (in no particular order):
exterior wall-mounted AC units, squat toilets, the hard plastic chair
the water heater (yes it feels like this belongs in a City Living refresh but I can’t deny my feelings for her! 🥵)
hopscotch and marbles and sky lanterns 🥹
the rice cooker and new functional tea pot and all the delicious looking new foods (all the new foods look so good lately!)
Cringe trait and the elder-specific Wise trait 🫶🏻
deco tuk tuks
the real estate sign and new communal mailboxes (with indoor and outdoor options!)
the glimmer of hope I’m keeping alive for angled gable options in build mode — am I dreaming or is the building in the bottom right (with the kind of roofline I’m talking about) not a deco building? you can see through the windows…

Something I miss on netflix is that subtitles used to be included for the openings/endings to anime. I remember for Soul Eater it would kind of go back and forth between the lyrics subtitled in romaji for one episode and then in translation for the next, which was really nice as someone who used to study it because it would help me pick out phrases that I recognize, like hey I DO know that word. Yeah, it's usually the kind of cliche ones, but still
I'm rewatching FMAB and they don't do it, which is sad because it was such a nice feature, but also I fucking adore the first opening but so much of it is so FAST I can't catch like. more than やめてよ.
So I finally decided to actually go out of my way to look it up, listening along, yeah some of these are those cliche ones I recognize, but is... Is that...?
It is, it's 吐き出す (to spit out/vomit)
So okay, that feels like the WEIRDEST thing to pick out, I know, but our professor in uni, who was also one of the librarians there, would teach us bizarre sentences to make vocabulary more likely to stick, and the sentence I remember best is 図書館にスイカが吐き出しました
Anyway, for the first time in my life the most bizarre sentence I know has come in handy 👍

Thinking about the portrayal of ancestry in Horizons.
#something about depicting adult characters as full people with their own motivations and lives as opposed to just making them flat#or not going deeper than a dichotomy between bad and good. it's refreshing to see stuff that feels real and poignant#i've been rotating rystal gibeon crave quite a lot in my mind lately. love the implications here and there about rystal and leyla#not telling you everything but leaving enough implications to imagine stuff.. i can think of a whole life for rystal and it's neat.#also i like that.. every family member feels like their own person. that thing about everyone having their own life and feelings.#liko is different from lucca and diana. but there are still moments which feel affectionate where you can think she takes after them#refreshing take on ancestry tbh. it strikes delicate balance between knowing your roots and past and finding yourself#learning about past tragedies to give them proper closure because you can't do that if you don't know what happened#even with gibeon.. very pleased and impressed that they are putting care in his character's depiction#specifically showing him as a young man and giving depth and perspective to him. allowing him to be a full character.#instead of just saying he is terrible and ending it at that. he gets to be someone with dreams and motivations and relationships#we've seen little of crave but the implications are there to pick apart and they are interesting#it genuinely enriches amethio's character and his side of the story. to make his relatives distinct people with their own perspectives#like.. instead of just saying his relatives are the worst evil!! they are putting care in the depiction and make them nuanced#characters who feel real.. strained and messy relationships with room for growth and development#definitely gives me more appreciation for the narrative in general. it's a kind of story that i find appealing#actually pleased that ame's side of the story is like that.. it could have been flat but thankfully it isn't.#stories with multiple layers and perspectives to them. my beloved.#anyway the portrayal of ancestry and adult characters in horizons is neat. and interesting.#the way they are tackling that kind of narrative to add to characters like liko and amethio. it's cool#hopefully. we get more on gibeon soon. he specifically has me intrigued.. him and crave too.#the writers definitely have specific themes they like and it shows through the story.. it's neat.#character notes

Reverse with Me recently ended and it was good but that's not what I want to talk about in the aftermath of the final episode.
The final was a good example of a satisfying and indulgent happy ever after, which is the kind of final episode most viewers, including me, love getting.
Because of that the final should have left me with a happy and satisfying feeling but instead I spent a lot of the episode being distracted because I just kept thinking "This is a good example of why I'm not as drawn to GL compared to BL".
A year ago I wrote this post on why more people watch BL than GL and the Reverse with Me final brought it to the forefront of my mind once again because my experience with the final episode pretty much confirmed every theory I mentioned in said post.
I want to specifically talk about theory 2 and 3 which are that
2. The difference between the cultural expectations portrayed in GLs and the lived experience of the audience makes it hard for the audience to relate to the characters. 3. Sometimes people just want to watch a show where none of the main characters are similar to them, particularly in regards to gender, because if you have something in common with them, that can drag your own baggage into the viewing experience.
because, as someone who's vaguely a woman, when I watched the final I felt like I should be able to relate to our main characters and their friend group because we all share a gender but the thing is that I can't relate to our main characters and their lives at all. Both in how they present and how they act and interact with their friends and family. There's something about them being women and me being a woman (vaguely) that makes me so much more aware of me not being able to relate to them and instead it just brings my own personal baggage to the surface and into my viewing experience.
They're the girls I wasn't friends with in school and they're the women I struggled to befriend in university, all because I was different.
Tumblr media
It's like there is too much baggage surrounding those types of women, so when I watch shows with them I struggle with immersing myself in the show which is much less of a problem for me when I watch BLs. Not necessarily because I relate more to the main characters in BLs, though I sometimes do, but because I don't feel like I need to relate in the same way I do with women.
I feel like I have a similar experience when it comes to the family dynamics in QLs because I have a family in much the same way but because of cultural differences I sometimes struggle with enjoying those scenes and plot lines which was also the case in Reverse with Me and the dad centered plot line.
Why is this different than with BLs?
I think what I'm trying to say and what this final episode crystallized for me, which I'd struggled to capture in my previous post, is that being able to relate to characters or having things in common with characters in shows is tricky because it can easily affect your viewing experience of a show.
It's often nice to see yourself and your experiences reflected in a character because it can make you feel seen and make you feel kinship with the characters but the flip side of the coin is that it can just as easily make you feel uncomfortable and take you out of the viewing experience.
The main reasons I think this happens are:
There's a dissonance between the viewer's cultural and societal expectations and those portrayed in the show.
This would include situations where the gender roles presented in a show doesn't match the societal expectations of the viewer which I think is more often the case for western viewers watching Asian shows.
When a show confronts the viewer with societal and cultural expectations which they themselves have a complicated relationship to.
This could be situations where the viewer isn't meeting or struggles with meeting societal and cultural expectations but the characters in the show are meeting those same expectations. Like if the characters are all fitting the expectations related to their gender and age, like how they behave and the milestones in life that they're meeting.
Both of the above reasons can affect your viewing experience regardless of gender but I think there's a much larger chance that it's negative if the characters are assigned the same gender as you were at birth.
Particularly with GLs this means that if you were assigned female at birth you might have some baggage around "being a women", whether you still identify as one or not, and having grown up with other "women" and have expectations surrounding being a woman applied to you, it makes it more likely that watching GLs might not feel as easy as watching BLs.
This is not me making excuses for why I don't watch a lot of GLs but instead me trying to investigate further why I'm more drawn to BL than GL and whether that might be part of why GLs are less popular in general.
I'd love to hear what you guys think and if you've experienced this kind of thing with a different show or even just the same show. Any and all comments and questions are welcome!

my ultimate japanese learning advice which isn't practical at all is to find someone who's transcended every hokey, self-proclaimed "this is the only way to learn japanese" technique, every popularized study method, someone who exists outside of the culture that's grown out of japanese learning and is just doing their own thing, and seek their wisdom
