Novice sewing pattern: Cut out shapes. Line up the little triangles on the edges. Stitch edges together. We've also included step-by-step assembly instructions with illustrations.
Novice knitting pattern: yOU MUSt uNDerstANd thE SECret cOdE CO67 (73, 87, 93) BO44 (63, 76, 90) 28 (32, 34) slip first pw repeat 7x K to end *kl (pl) 42 * until 13" (13, 13, 15) join new at 30 pl for 17 rows ssk 27 k2tog mattress lengthwise BO and sacrifice a goat to the knitting gods. WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU WANT "INSTRUCTIONS," I JUST GAVE THEM TO YOU
#knitting#no it's not a real pattern but I can't write one that makes sense because I have no freaking clue what any of that means#How do you make things that aren't basic rectangles#Why has every knitter I've asked for help just said 'patterns are easy; you just have to know how to read them' & then refused to teach me#Where do I even find a goat to sacrifice#How do I join the pattern cult#I am so confused#I've been knitting for almost a decade but I can only make scarves and potholders#I learned one (1) stitch by watching a YouTube video and none of my friends or family knit so I have no IRL resources#And nobody I meet seems to want to take the time to explain the rest to me#I taught myself to sew through trial and error but that doesn't really work with knitting because error is pretty much just... Unraveling?#Anyway sorry for the tag rant I'm just frustrated that I see pretty things I want to make but the instructions are in an alien language#And the gap between 'absolute novice' and 'intermediate' seems to be about 20 years of experience and formal instruction

My homunculus

Hashtag my homunculus
#diy plush#i think i was overcomplicating the bodies. like. most basic plush body shape is fine. who gives a shit#also i am maybe regretting the felt for the head... you can see the wear on her already.#alfonse is holding up really well bc his felt was thicker. HUGE pain in the ass to work with#but it did end up making him super sturdy!#i have been thinking of going back and fixing sharena's head (you can see it's misshapen too)#but like. i actually have no idea where i'd start w that. aside from adjusting the shape beneath the head#but i have no idea how i'd fix the issue of her material without like. having to re-do her completely.#at their core these two really are fuck around and find out plushies. i'm learning the importance#of what material to pick and for what purpose.#unfortunately i am gonna do something different for alfonse's body too. the initial one i made#while super cute and i still love the back stitching. i need to readjust proportions#esp if i'm gonna be layering materials for clothes. ESP on this small of a scale.#i have a test run body on alfonse rn that i'm not entirely sold on either. proportions are right#but the craftsmenship is shoddy on it. so. split on even showing it.#also i did succumb to cheating w a sewing machine. which! i need more practice w anyway.#esp if i want to make bigger plushies in the future actually. so. at this point i was just avoiding it#also don't mind the stray pages there LMFAOO one is a comic i already posted and was reffing#for other comics i've been doing. really cool i have like. a backlog of stuff i can ref of my own work actually#i am soooooo obsessed w paneling and placement... nobody talks about paneling and placement......#sharena

friends i love crocheting so much . why does it hurt me so
#did i marathon another doily? yes.#did that make my index finger not fit for crocheting for the next few days because the thread basically caused ropeburn lite? yes.#did i learn from this experience? no#will i avoid repeating this mistake in the future? also no. i did the same exact thing for the 4th time. this one was smaller tho#i like making doilies best because the patterns are so easy to follow and i get to learn many interesting stitches#bigger things like blankets and pillowcases are fun too but not engaging enough. they're good to make when watching a movie#but i usually don't have enough yarn on me to make something big#+ it's really difficult for me to pick colors for the patterns and solid color is just so boring and bland. when i was making that bag for#ori it took me longer to figure out the color scheme than to actually make it.#i fucking hate making plushies. made 2 of the same squid (fun and cute) but making any other plushie is agony#i had SO many attempts at the manta ray. grr wrr grr. i'm not even going to try making anything else until i forget why i hate making them#crochet#whispers

learning more ways to knit is giving me such a love for youtube bc like. my mom knows a lot about knitting but she lives in a different state and I don't want to learn from her but thankfully there are many grandmas online who post knitting tutorials and they explain things as many times as I need and never yell :]
#odhran.txt#my mom taught me how to knit on straight needles when i was a kid#and then another friend mom taught me to purl#but my mom knows how to do cable knit and crazy colorwork and stuff. shes really fucking good.#but she never really taught me anything but the basics#i just learned how to knit in the round this week#and how to do a stockinette stitch#and how to increase and decrease#I'm still working on sailors weave pattern its weirdly hard#and i want to do slip stitch and maybe brioche#that's tomorrow after i get off work i think#knitting

how did you learn to knit? i want to start but its kind of overwhelming
my mom used to be an avid knitter years ago when she could still properly work with her hands, so i definitely picked the interest from her, but actually we have basic fibers arts as a mandatory school subject from like fifth to seventh grade so i learned it from there. i was shit at it for years before picking it up as an adult again and at that point it was muscle memory lmao so unfortunately i cant really help the learning part here. watching a lot of tutorials, videos especially, and trial and error has helped me learn new techniques a lot tho!
#it can be very overwhelming tho hence why i mainly just make socks which require like. two different stitches only lmao#i dont have to think a lot with that#tho ive heard a lot of people prefer to start with mittens instead cause somehow?? they are supposed to be easier??#idk. either of those two or something else really simple would be my suggestion to start with. after learning just the basic stitches ofc 💜#this is probably really unhelpful sorry lmao my brain is soup#dykecassidy#birdhouse ✉

Idea: tinder but for novice craftspeople to match with elder craftspeople to learn how to craft instead of trying to teach themselves via YouTube.
The Elders would get companionship and someone to pass their knowledge on to, the Novices would get the wisdom of ages that is going to die out so soon if it isn't passed along.
#definitely not me being sad about the fact that my grandma taught me only the basics of sewing and crocheting before she died#and ive taught myself embroidery cross stitch and tatting but definitely not with any expertise#and i will never be able to knit properly im positive#and my mom never learned any of these things from her even though she was incredible at it#please i want to join an old folks' knitting circle so bad

I learned to read patterns and for what? To spend half of an eternity making a garment out of sport-weight yarn.
#I'm actually kind of enjoying myself#except for the moments I'm absolutely confused because the pattern is in UK terms#and the yarn is DELICIOUSLY soft#there's a solid chance I'm not doing this QUITE right but it's close enough#hopefully it fits#I completed the back panel a while ago#there are two long front pieces and I'm maybe a third of the way through the first#it's a basic stitch with regular increases#once the front pieces are done I attach everything and then add borders and clean up the arm holes#but I really need to buckle down#I'm not going to be able to make half of what I wanted to make for Christmas this year and I'm learning to be ok with that#it's just been a weird year for me creativity-wise#I am sorely tempted to give knitting another try if only to (presumably) making garments work up more quickly#crochet#mine

Me, a beginner:

#WHEEZE this is literally what i did when i started crochet#i learned the basic stitches and practiced those by making little coaster-like circles with shitty yarn#and then I saw a crochet Sea Dragon pattern and was like 'oh heck yeah'#i skipped beginner i skipped intermediate i was just learning as a went#and yeah part of his torseo is a little wonky but#hey i did it#i do wanna go back and do another one just because#i have vastly improved

they will need to whipstitch the wound closed, but embroidery is a "woman's" task. they will need to eat and clean and mend clothes, but why learn basic things when you can have a woman measure out your life in beads. he will be the "head" of your house, but if you want him to act accordingly, you must assign him a list of all applicable activities. you will be otherwise constantly in charge of almost-everything; so he will lead the house he is absent from.
in movies and books, the "cool" girl will be more-like-a-man. she will be "less boring," more "fun". she will have masculine ideas and masculine talents, which means a man doesn't have to change in order to find her fascinating. she will disdain of something as simple as stitching. how boring!
she will kick open the door of a car and quip what, girls can't drive? and flip her long hair down one side. she will grill and shoot a gun and skydive. be a guy. she will be sexualized.
somewhere, working on computers becomes a masculine task, and now on tv a gen-z disney character throws her hands up in the air. i can't be a computer science nerd, i'm a girl! in the real life, she will be unable to sit through some of her classes, shivering when she realizes she is the only woman present in several of them.
how many times have you read this book and seen this show and watched this movie. the singular woman is allowed 5 lines because she's not just smart! she's also pretty! she is surrounded by 20 average men, but she is stunning. she is the exception to the bland, pale lives of women-at-home, who will never be shown. she likes dirt and motorbikes and blood and shows up in a tiny dress during the final scene, rolling her eyes at our male lead's incredulity - just because i like motorcross doesn't mean anything. i'm still a woman, okay? i actually like shopping.
it is almost never reversed, and you think about that often. it is vanishingly rare to have a single man in a cast of women. the male love interest does not show up at a feminist march and sardonically squint at our leading lady - what? you thought only women care about human rights? he does not know how to balance a checkbook or kickbox because i grew up with three sisters.
when he cooks he is a chef, which is sexy. when he cleans, he's being kind, genteel. when he nurtures his family, confetti rains from the ceiling. when she does these things: it is her duty and her identity. what do you mean she has other passions and hobbies? isn't her hobby and passion homemaking?
the other day a friend embroidered a seam closed on your jacket into the shape of ivy. every time you touch it, you think of her.
something about women's hobbies and art and skills. something about women's work.
#this makes no sense bc i got too mad :)#writeblr#warm up#i'm workin on something else as a thank u to a friend :) just up early and#honestly thinking of fuckken eloise from bridgerton#she was like. 80% the antagonist this season. girl . ''oh nooooo colin is engaged to penny!!''#girl shut up ur a feminist and ur friend is standing there saying shes about to be SOLD
