Johnny 'Soap' MacTavish x f!Reader
MDNI 18+ Explicit smut, unprotected p in v, backseat sex, Soap being a vulgar little fiend, creampie if you look closely, just absolute filth
WC ~1.3k
Synposis: Everyone loves that new car smell. Except Soap. He prefers a more natural scent. Yours. And he knows just what to do to get that new leather lathered in it.
@glitterypirateduck @deadbranch this one's for you💛
Soap MacTavish is a simple man.
He appreciates quality over quantity. And prefers subtlety over indulgence in regards to the finer things in life.
This is nowhere more prominent than when he signs the down payment on a new 4Runner. Him being handed the keys, his mind already playing out the next strategic maneuvers needed to inact his plan while he aids you in effortlessly moving the belongings from one vehicle to the next.
"You alright, babe?" You ask. Glancing over your shoulder with a smile, scrutinizing the knowing grin etched in his lips.
"Aye. M'good, hen."
It was the simplicity and deep brogue of his reply that had your mind tumbling. The sound of his toolbox jiggling in the back not too dissimilar to the gears turning within your thoughts. Nestling the distinctive red Milwaukee chest in the corner, keeping it in place with his duffle bag that rarely left the vehicle's trunk.
"God. Is there anything better than new car smell?" You boast. Sliding into the passenger seat, the fresh leather molding to your frame, softened by the heat radiating from your skin.
His silence to you was unusual.
Soap was always a talker. Rarely going an hour without interjecting himself into any discussion, and more than comfortable putting his own view on any and all topics of the day.
Your eyes narrowed at him. Trying to decipher his unreadable expression; gaze focused on the road, barely a twitch to the corners of his lips. And his eyes, normally bright and expsoed in the midday sun, were darkened by his Ray-Bans, impeding your perusing stare.
"Johnny. What's going on with you?"
Almost instinctively, and with the speed and fluidity of a hardened servicemen, he reached out to wrap his hand around the flesh of your thigh. His unwavering stare focused on the road, his fingers traveling up the suppleness of your inner thigh, only to nestle between your legs and press his fingertips into the seam of your pants. Feeling the throb of arousal beneath the fabric, pulling a sinful whimper from your lips, adding the perfect amount pressure to the area around your clit.
"New car smell's fine, yeah. But I want somethin better," Soap growled. Pulling into a vacant parking lot, hurdling the sparkling new SUV into a corner spot with a dramatic jolt. Barely able to unfasten his own seat belt, his hands shaking with need, crawling into the backseat before grasping at your clothes to drag you back with him, an excited shriek erupting from your chest from his needy exuberance.
"M'gonnae make 'er smell like you, bonnie. Want yer scent on me, every time I get in 'er."
His hands were on you like a feverish fiend. Tearing your clothes away, fabric tossed to the back with reckless abandon as the scent of arousal permeated into the pours of fresh leather.
Silencing your protest with his mouth, tasting the sweetness of promiscuity on your tongue, exhaling a growl between your lips while he rocked his hips, grinding his hardened cock into your core, feeling the heat radiate over the fabric of his jeans.
Breaking the kiss with a wet pop, he fumbled with his belt, opening his pants with a determination you knew all too well. Thankful for the tinted windows and private brick cove of the parking lot. Not wanting to add indescent exposure to the days events as he moved to hover over your naked frame. Fully intent on christening his latest 4Runner with the spicy bouquet of sex.
With a focused purpose, Soap pierces your silken cunt with the throbbing hardness of his cock, devouring the moan escaping your throat with a heated kiss. Gliding his tongue in a sultry dance tandem with the languid roll of his hips.
"Gonnae make ya come...fuck...got'a make ya come, bonnie. Cannae pull out til ya fuckin clench 'round me."
If it wasn't the desperate plea echoing on a breathy growl, it was the steady and determined roll of his hips that ultimately sealed your fate in that parking lot.
The thick, spongy head of his cock kissing the sensitive wall of your cervix. Refusing to pull out entirely with every backward thrust, keeping himself buried within your velvety walls, pushing you towards overstimulation with every labored exhale. The metal carriage keeping the world at bay as your mind and body succumbed to climactic euphoria.
"Johnny..."
"Tha's it, hen. Come f'me. Feelin ya fuckin wrap 'round me."
Your orgasm moved with a chaotic symphony of gasps and moans.
Wanton and unadulterated.
Muffled by his lips, tangling with his animalistic growls. Legs wrapping around his waist to keep yourself grounded to reality for fear of drowning in the abyss of his own intrepid making.
The rhythmic roll of his hips steadily began to falter. Every forward push accentuated by a groan.
Gravelly and unfiltered.
Raw.
"F-fuck, bonnie. Gonnae come-...fill ya up. Make ya-...spill me outta ya."
You never tired of his vulgarity when he was on the cusp of emptying himself into your cunt.
He was breathless. Beautiful. And altogether beastly as a surge of warmth and pressure filled your canal. Prompting him to give one final thrust as your combined fluids dripped out of your fluttering hole and onto the maiden and unblemished leather beneath.
"Johnny-, you-, you're gonna stain the seats." You plead, attempting to push him off, halted when met with the weight of an immovable Scottish brick wall.
"Tha's th'fuckin point, lass. Gonnae mark 'er up wit ya. Douse 'er in tha' sweet fuckin scent a'yers."
You knew better than to deny him when he was like this. Hell bent on replacing that distinctive new car smell with the aromatic scent of sex and natural arousal.
Letting the quietness surround your conjoined bodies. Acting like a soothing blanket, ignoring the world outside to feel the qualitative euphoria in the afterglow.
Reluctant to move, Soap instead laid himself down and buried his head into your chest. Stifling a moan into your flesh, tilting to the side as he blanketed your naked body with his sculpted frame.
You realized then, gazing up onto the brickstone wall outside, that he had found refuge in the back parking lot of your favorite custard creamery. The familiar font gracing the red barrier catching your eye, exhaling a quiet moan of contentment, watching it rustle over the Scots distinguishable mohawk.
"What?" He breathed. Voice low, muffled against the supple flesh of your breast.
"I think I've thought of a name for her."
"Aye? Wha's tha'?"
You let the silence hang for a moment. Allowing his mind to settle on suspicion, tilting his head to rest his chest between the valley of your breasts.
"Well? Wha' is it, lass?"
"How about CeeDee? Cookie Devil. Our nickname at Culver's, to where you just so happened to park us."
Soap lifted his head, taking a quick glance at the signage above. Replying with a perplexed brow, softening his expression with a gentle yet appreciative grin.
"Aye. Cannae lie, hen. Kinda like it."
You smiled at his approval. Cupping his face to bring him in for a kiss. His lips still reddened from the impromptu coitus, drawing a deliciously soft whimper from the depths of his throat.
"Easy, lass. Been a while since I kissed ya like tha'."
You ignore him. Blissfully continuing with your previous conversation, feigning innocence.
"Y'know. CeeDee can actually work quite well. It's an acronym for the other name I want to give her."
"Mhm. And wha's tha' one?"
Pursing your lips, you paused. Keeping your wits about you in fear of bursting into a fit of laughter at any moment.
"Well, if you plan on us fucking a lot in her, why don't we just call her the Cum Dumpster?"
"Steamin fuckin Jesus, bonnie."

Tumblr media

paid extras: all weather floor mats, powered sunroof, clear tail lamps, surround sound 14 speaker audio system. fitted with a (boot area) collapsible organiser and premium, dual pocket back seat organisers (magnetic close).
air freshener scent of choice is cherry vanilla, very sweet and obviously artificial. additionally, the back-middle seat is decorated with a plush, fluffy white pillow. tay's sedan is for everyday use, and naturally, is her most used.
Tumblr media
land rover x-dynamic hse defender 90 —

A Place Like This [Chapter 2][Rhett Abbott x OC]
Tumblr media
Summary: Rhett Abbott has never met a girl like you. You’re a corporate city girl in Wabang on borrowed company time — he thinks there’s no way you would waste it on him. So when you fall for the local bull rider, you’re both a little surprised. What will it take to get Rhett to realize he can give you everything you’re looking for? And will Rhett be able to reconcile the fact that your job is literally to dismantle Wabang and break apart the only place his family has ever known?
Pairing: Rhett Abbott x OC [Julia Han]
WC: 2.9K
Warning: Cursing, implied smut, some violence
Series masterlist here
“Julia, Dan wants to see you in conference room B.”
You tossed your head back with a groan, slipping your heels on beneath your desk and standing up, smoothing down the buttons of your blouse and grabbing your laptop before clicking down the hall, past the row of partners’ offices. The good offices, the ones with windows and built-in bars and a couch to collapse on when you got too piss drunk to possibly take the train home at midnight after a client meeting.
Sliding open the glass door, you cleared your throat.
“Dan? Charles said you asked for me.”
“Julia!” Dan turned his megawatt smile on you. “Take a seat.”
His enthusiasm terrified you. Dan got excited about exactly three things. When the White Sox won, the day his wife signed their divorce settlement and he managed to scrape by without a hefty monthly alimony payment, and acquisitions.
Dan loved the kinds of deals that could blow up in your face. The kind that sucked you dry and left you for the wolves. They were his kryptonite.
“How’s it going?” you asked, taking a seat in a black leather rolling chair, crossing one leg over another.
He lowered himself into the chair next to yours at the head of the table and slid a thin folder over. “Ever been to Wyoming?”
You shook your head. “Never been one for horses. Or cowboys for that matter.”
Dan chuckled. “You might change your mind after spending a few weeks there.”
You sighed and flipped open the folder. “Alright, you have my interest. What is it?”
His eyes sparkled and they told you everything you needed to know about this assignment.
It was going to be bad. People were going to lose their jobs. Maybe they’d even be forced to leave town. You would be a social pariah in a matter of days.
And you were going to make the firm tens of millions of dollars.
***
The town was simple. That was an understatement.
The guy at the airport had apologized profusely when the only rental car left was a slim Honda sedan instead of the luxury model you had made the reservation for.
You had sighed, climbing into the black car, and driving the hour and a half to Wabang. Halfway through, your Spotify bluetooth cut out and you swore, rapping your fingernails against the leather steering wheel.
It was a beautiful drive. You had to give Dan some credit. He could have sent anyone, but he chose you. Wyoming was not part of your normal remit for the firm. You were strictly the midwest agent: Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee.
But you were vying for vice president and he knew it. This was your shot to prove your worth in an office of all white middle aged men. They hadn’t wanted to hire the young female associate. You didn’t fit their mold. You hadn’t gone to Northwestern or UMichigan and been a Tri Delt. You didn’t enjoy the steakhouse, cigars after work and strip club aesthetic that the other partners languished in.
What’s more, you were a woman. A half-Asian woman, no less. Some saw you as a diversity hire. Others said it was the firm finally entering into the twenty-first century. Either way, you had climbed your way up from the bottom. Dan saw it. The other partners did, too.
Some might say the Wyoming deal was to get you out of the office. But you knew what it was. A lifeline. A fast track to partner.
It was your shot.
***
Your corporate housing was a small apartment above the town’s bakery. It smelled like fresh baked bread in the morning and the entire front room was drenched in natural light by early afternoon. You hated that it was lovely, in the most ordinary way.
Wabang was such a different type of assignment that you hadn’t done the correct research before jumping on the flight. It was a jeans and boots kind of town. You stuck out in your Jimmy Choos, St. Johns suits, Chanel flap bag. You stuck out for a lot of reasons.
It was apparent from the moment that you got to town there were a handful of bachelors that had placed you on their radar. Perhaps it was the fact that you were fresh meat. Or that you were one of only a handful of unmarried twenty-something women in a town where the average marriage age was undoubtedly early twenties.
Either way, when a suave-looking blond in a blue button down approached you outside of the local market, his eyes skimming over your dress before landing on your face, white teeth bared in a shockingly luminescent smile, you felt a strange ick wash over you.
“Hello there,” he said, leaning against the brick of the building. “I’m Luke Tillerson.”
You nodded. “Julia Han.”
He smirked. “Where you from, gorgeous? Not from around here, obviously. Would have remembered a thing like you.”
The urge to gag was clear and present, but you choked it down. “Listen, sweetheart, we don’t have to do this. The answer is no and I think we both know it.”
An angry red blush crept over Luke’s chest, up his neck, and you saw his eyes bulge slightly. For a moment, you were almost worried that he might reach out and grab you. There was an air about him that gave you reservation. An instability.
“I don’t mean to be rude,” you followed up quickly, shifting your purse from one side to another, hiking it up on your shoulder. “I’m just in town for a few weeks, tops. I try not to make it a habit of starting things that I can’t follow through with.”
His fists, which had been balled up against his sides, slowly unwound themselves and you watched him take a deep breath. “Alright, darlin’, guess I gotta accept that.”
You smiled. “Nice to meet you, Luke.”
As you turned to walk away, his fingers circled your wrist, tugging you back. A sweat started to break out at your hairline as you turned around, his grip tight and unrelenting. “You change your mind, darlin’, and I’ll be here,” he whispered gruffly, standing so close you could smell his astringent aftershave. “Tillerson ranch. Come by anytime.”
Luke dropped your wrist and you shook it out at your side. You were used to men like him. Men who took because they thought it was owed to them. Men who had never heard the word no before in their lives.
They were dangerous. Almost as dangerous as you.
***
Rhett fiddled with his keys, leaning up against the side of the truck, eyes scanning the main street of Wabang for your signature heels.
The comment you had made as you walked out of the door at the bar the night before terrified him. You terrified him, in a way. In the best way possible.
He needed to know what you meant. Even though a part of him wanted to get away, leave Wabang in the dust, Rhett knew that he would always be inextricably tied to this place. This land. His family was Wabang.
Finally, he spotted you leaving a door near the bakery, dark sunglasses covering most of your face. You had traded in the black heels for a pair of nude ones, and the black dress for a pale blue one that offset your olive skin and dark hair.
He stepped out onto the sidewalk in your direct path and watched as you lifted the sunglasses to the top of your head and smiled, heading his way.
“Rhett,” you said softly and just the sound of your voice sent a jolt of electricity down his spine. “How are you?”
He nodded. “Good,” he whispered gruffly. You took in his hat, worn jeans and boots. It was the morning, still early, and you wondered what exactly he did when he wasn’t riding bulls. “I, uh, I was hoping we could talk again.”
You smiled. “Yeah, sure.”
“Now?” he said, lips curled up in a soft smile. “Diner’s right over there.” He pointed one long finger to a building down the road.
“I actually have a meeting with the Mayor in ten minutes,” you replied. “But I’m free for dinner?”
Rhett felt his chest constrict. He didn’t want to jump the gun and assume it was a date. But the way you were looking at him — sparkling eyes, lips pushed together in a perfect pout. He hoped you meant it as a date. “Yeah, OK,” he nodded. “I’ll pick you up at seven?”
“Alright. I’m staying right down there. Apartment over the bakery.”
Rhett nodded and smiled again. “I’ll be there.”
You slid your sunglasses on and pressed one hand to his muscular bicep, squeezing it gently. “Looking forward to it.”
***
Rhett waited nervously on the sidewalk outside of your apartment. He was early. Royal had asked him to stay late rebuilding a fence but he had brushed his father off, not letting on that he was taking the newcomer out to dinner.
Your arrival in town had whipped up a flurry of rumors, but it appeared that only Rhett knew your true reasoning for appearing in Wabang. The Mayor was notably silent about the fact that a corporation wanted to take over the town. He had failed, and a man like him hated to go down without a fight.
At seven on the dot, he stepped forward and pressed the metal buzzer for the upstairs apartment. Your voice rang through, muffled by the decades old technology. “Coming!”
You swung the door open, almost knocking Rhett off of his feet. He was standing too close to the door, not expecting you to swing it open so violently.
“Shit!” he whispered as the metal nearly skimmed him and you immediately reached out, pressing your hands to his face.
“Oh my God, I’m sorry!” you said quickly, brushing your fingers across his cheeks and then down his arms, eyes doing a quick assessment. “Are you OK? Did it hit you?”
He smiled and shook his head, a small section of hair falling into his face. He had a quiet way of observing his surroundings and Rhett simply stretched out his fingers, catching your own as your hands slid down his arms, checking for cuts or scrapes. “I’m fine, darlin’,” he murmured.
Rhett gripped one of your hands tightly, leading you out onto the sidewalk into the passenger seat of his truck. He pulled open the door, helping you up, and you smiled, climbing in.
“So where are we going?” you asked once he was settled into the driver’s seat, reversing out of the spot, one hand on the headrest of your seat. You couldn’t help but watch the muscles rippling beneath his clean shirt.
“Restaurant one town over,” he said in his gravelly voice. “‘Bout a ten minute drive.”
“Why one town over?”
Rhett shot you a look, eyebrows raised. “Cause we have some stuff to talk about and I have a feeling you’ll be a little more forthcoming outside of city limits.”
You chuckled and leaned back against the seat. “So you don’t want to be seen with the town pariah?”
“Trust me, a man wants to be seen with a girl like you on his arm.”
***
You ordered a gin and lime over ice, which made Rhett raise his eyebrows. He had you pegged as a red wine girl, or maybe a whiskey sour on a particular night. Not straight gin.
“So, what’s it like being a bull rider?” you asked.
“It’s not important or special, really. Just the one thing I felt like I could do around here.”
“Well it’s interesting to me,” you replied, taking a sip of your drink before leaning forward, sliding your arm around the top of the curved booth backrest, fingers dancing lightly on Rhett’s shoulder.
He blushed. “I’m sure a city girl like you needs a lot more to be impressed,” he said. “Bet I can’t compete with the kinds of guys you’re used to.”
You shook your head. “Those guys are all the same. They’re boring, in the absolutely worst ways.” You skimmed a nail across his shoulder toward the slight curl of hair at the nape of his neck. “So you’re wrong. It doesn’t take more to impress me.”
Rhett could barely focus. His brain was short circuiting as you brushed your fingers across his shoulders and neck. He was acutely aware that you had your legs crossed under the large booth table, one foot wedged tightly beneath his calf.
He wanted to reach out and touch you, feel your warmth under his fingertips, but he stopped himself as the waitress set down your food.
“Tell me why you’re really here.” His voice was low and husky. “The deal, the town.”
You shook your head again. “I said too much last night. It’s business, Rhett. Nothing personal.”
“You can’t drop a bomb like that and walk away.”
There was something in his voice that you couldn’t place. You had read him the moment he came up to you in the bar. He was stuck. But perhaps you had overestimated how much he wanted to leave Wabang.
He was going to take this much more personally than you had hoped.
“Rhett,” you whispered, placing your fork down on the plate and sliding one hand onto his thigh. He froze, blue eyes hooked on yours. “Honey, trust me when I say I don’t like doing this. But I was sent here to do a job. And I have to see it through.”
“But who is the buyer?” he asked. “What does this mean for the town? For my ranch.”
“Your ranch? I thought you said you were a bull rider?”
“My family has a ranch,” he said softly and the realization began to sink in. He was tied to the town in a way you hadn’t imagined. “Abbott ranch, out on Route Eight. Over next to the Tillersons.”
“Tillerson,” you repeated. “Like Luke Tillerson?”
Rhett tensed. “Yeah. You know him?”
“He kind of cornered me the other day. Tried to ask me out and I said no and he didn’t take it too well.”
“What do you mean, didn’t take it too well?”
“Rhett, it’s nothing.”
“Julia, it’s not nothing,” he said, his eyes trained on yours. “What did he do?” His voice was low, venomous. There was something there. It wasn’t just jealousy. It was years of competition and anger boiled down into a volatile slurry. You could almost feel it radiating off of him.
“He asked me out and I said no, that I don’t date while I’m on assignment. And then when I went to walk away he grabbed my wrist, hard, pulling me back. That was it.” You rubbed your fingers softly on his thigh. “Rhett, please, it was nothing. Let’s move on.”
He slammed one fist onto the table, rattling the plates, and you gasped. The other tables around you shot dirty looks, but Rhett looked at the ground, biting his bottom lip.
“Rhett,” you said and the anger in your voice made him look up. “No. We’re not going to do this. Either you let this go or I’m walking away.”
“Shit,” he muttered, wiping his hands on his napkin. “Julia, I’m sorry.” His fingers curled over yours where they sat on his thigh. “I’m sorry,” he repeated.
You nodded. “It’s alright.”
As you turned back to your dinner, sliding your hand from his leg, Rhett’s mind jumped in circles. What did you mean you didn’t date people on assignment? What was this dinner if that was the case?
When the waitress dropped off the check, you reached for it and Rhett shot you a look.
“No,” he said forcefully and you hated that it made you wet between your thighs. “Don’t even think about it, sweetheart.”
You smiled. “Alright, whatever you say, Rhett.” You didn’t want to point out that you made mid-six figures and he was a bull rider. You got the sense it would be deeply offensive to him if you tried to pay.
Outside, you took a deep breath. The air was so fresh compared to Chicago. Rhett towered over you, even in your heels, one hand pressed against the building wall as he leaned to the side.
“Did you have a nice time?” you whispered.
Rhett nodded, a small smile curving his perfect pink lips. “I did, yeah. Did you?”
He didn’t understand what you were after. What you wanted from him. What you wanted in general. He didn’t understand anything about you. In fact, you terrified him to his core. He had never known a woman like you and that terrified him because all he wanted was to pull you in, press his lips to yours, spend the next fifty years learning every inch of your body with his mouth and hands and mind.
So when you leaned forward and skimmed your hand through his hair near his ear, pulling his neck down, locking your lips against his, his heart threatened to explode from his body.
“Yeah,” you whispered, lips still grazing his. “I had a great time.”

The Three Rules
Rule #1, Rule #2, Rule #3
Summary: Spencer X F!reader work through exhaustion and frustration while on a case.
warnings: swearing (med), throwing things?, death (not main, not graphic, but mentioned), cm style issues, thats it i think???
Pairing: Spencer Reid X F!reader
words: 4.6K (shes big)
A/N: I keep making these soooo long, so, sorry. this one is a little darker than the rest but ends in fluff per usual and has a little bit of funny Emily and funny Garcia
*I do not own any CM characters
~~~~~~~~~~
Rule #2: Always offer comfort and support
Y/N ~
Spencer and I finally moved in together about a month after the last incident. And he was right, it was more efficient.
“We gotta go, we gotta go, we gotta go!” I waited by our front door and Spencer ran around the apartment looking for his keys.
“I know I put them in the bowl”
“Spencer! I have keys, it's fine, let's go, lover boy!” He laughed and checked the ceramic bowl on the counter one last time before giving up.
“Okay, one last check. Coffee?”
“Check” I held up the two large cups in my hands.
“Go bags, check” he held up both of our bags on his shoulders.
“And keys, ½ so, good enough”
We arrived at the tarmac fifteen minutes earlier than usual...but still 10 minutes late.
Spencer~
I took both of our bags and stashed them in the jet with the others before taking my seat beside Y/N on the couch. As per usual the first teasing began from Morgan when I sat down and he saw that my shirt was buttoned wrong and my hair was noticeably more disheveled than usual.
“Oooh, looks like a lover boy had a very good morning!” I glared at him as I rebuttoned my shirt and JJ immediately took action.
“Morgan, don’t make me put you in time out” He put his hands up in a mock defense.
“Im sorry mom!” Rossi laughed before handing me my paper file and Y/N her I-pad.
“Milwaukee again, they've got a child murderer.” The once light mood from the teasing had gone away in an instant as we all opened up our files to see the pictures.
“That's an annihilator” My first thought was to take Y/N's hand, offering a little support for her and comfort for myself through a small touch. She took my hand gladly and gave it a little squeeze.
“An overly sadistic one too” Morgans brow furrowed as we continued to review the case but with perfect timing Garcia's face popped up on the screen.
“I have a present for you” We all looked at her with puzzled expressions through the screen.
“Look under your seats!” she began with her best impression of a talk show host and we all fumbled about to find bedazzled gun holsters for each of us with all of our names in special large gems of our favorite colors.
“Wow, thanks Garcia that's- that’s really thoughtful of you!” Emily tried and failed to contain her laughter as we all looked over to see Hotch replacing his leather belt holster with the bedazzled one from Garcia. He stood up to show her and got close to the camera.
“I’d say I look pretty badass.” He said it with a deadpan look on his face and then put his gun in it and sat back down without saying another word. JJ and Y/N looked at each other for a split second before bursting out in uncontrollable laughter. Like always, if one person on the team laughs, the rest of us can't help but join in. I always like to say it's because of Y/N. Her laugh is just one of those laughs that radiates all over and lights up a room.
Once we could breathe again we all thanked Garcia and she hung up with a big smile on her face. Now on to Milwaukee.
Y/N~
When we landed Hotch sent Spencer and I to the first crime scene together. Whenever possible on hard cases he likes to keep the two of us together because we work better that way. There is just something about the little touches during a hard case that keeps me going. And for this one, I was definitely going to need that.
“Poor JJ” As we walked around the crime scene looking at all of the damage done Spencer and I talked through whatever came to mind.
“What do you mean?” I love him so much. But he's absolutely clueless.
“I mean, her and Hotch both. I can't imagine doing cases like this when you have a kid of your own back home. It must be terrifying” he nodded in silence before crouching down in the corner of the little boys room.
“Do you ever consider it?” I continued talking to him even though I know we are here to work. Sometimes that's my biggest flaw. I don't shut up easily.
“Consider what?”
“You know. Having baby geniuses one day?” I gave him a curious little smile as I waited for his response and continued writing little notes about the crime scene in my phone.
“Well i mean yeah, of course. But I'm not the one who'd be carrying them for 9 months am I?” I laughed at him and nodded before stopping altogether.
“Them?” He gave me a mischievous smile back and said nothing.
“Fine then, keep your secrets”
We finished up at the crime scene and then headed back to the police station where the rest of the team was waiting for our report. Hotch and JJ look notably defeated and Rossi, Emily, and Derek just looked downright exhausted. Sometimes our work takes its toll rather quickly, especially when it's a very emotional case. Seeing a parent sob so horrifically after you give them the news is never easy. It's draining.
“So, what was the scene like?” Rossi spoke up from where he was standing in the corner.
“It was carnage. Absolute carnage”
“How are the parents?” I looked at JJ who out of all of us definitely looked the most defeated.
“They’re acting like anyone else would. They’re distraught.” I grabbed Spencer's arm and held it tight as we talked about the profile. The more we talked the worse everyone looked. Garcia called mid profile and even her voice sounded exhausted. But we all knew that we wouldn't rest until we caught him.
Spencer~
None of us slept that night. None of us even left the precinct that night. A few times while we waited for more information or for someone to come in for an interview we would take turns napping on two chairs we wedged together to form a bed in the conference room. I tried that once, but I could barely fit my torso in them so I decided I would have better luck with the floor instead.
“Spence, you want a snack?”
“They got pretzels?” I looked up from my napping position on the floor to look at Y/N when she stood over me with a few quarters in her hand.
“Yeah, i'll be right back” She walked away for a moment and came back with two cups of coffee and two bags of pretzels.
She plopped both of them on my chest and crumbled to the floor beside me.
“Dinner is served” I chuckled and took a swig of coffee- overly sugared just how I like it- and then ate a single pretzel before Morgan came running into the room.
“A boy was just kidnapped”
In a panic we all rushed up from our various positions and walked out into the main room of the precinct. I went straight for Hotch who was on the phone talking angrily.
“They put out an amber?” he blocked one end of the phone before turning to me.
“Not yet, get JJ on that please” I nodded and started to walk over to where JJ was napping.
“And Reid, get Y/N to talk to the parents, JJ’s done enough” I nodded solemnly.
We all have to do parent notifications and walkthroughs sometimes, but JJ does them the most. Every once in a while we make someone other than her do it to give her a well deserved break. Out of all of the things that we do, notifying the families is one of the hardest.
“JJ, another boy has been taken, Hotch needs you to put out the amber.” I shook her shoulder and she woke quickly.
“Me? I should be with the family, have Garcia do it.” I looked her straight in the eyes and shook my head.
“We got this one, you deserve a break” she said nothing but got up from her chairs and walked over to the computer to start on the alert.
“Y/N, baby, Hotch wants you with the families” she was still sitting on the floor where our coffees sat mostly untouched.
“Oh, um, okay, let's go then” I put a hand on her thigh.
“He wants me here. Will you be okay alone?”
“Oh. yeah, i'll be fine i have the keys anyways” She looked uneasy but neither of us had any choice in the matter. I gave her a chaste kiss on the top of her head and she grabbed my hand for just a second.
“You okay?”
“Yeah, yeah, i’ll be okay”
I subconsciously noticed the way she indirectly answered my question. It was her way of saying, no i’m not okay, but go do what you do. I kissed her hand in mine and walked out of the room going to help Derek and Hotch deliver the profile while the rest of the team was dispatched to separate locations. It's going to be a long night.
Y/N~
By the time I arrived at the families house it was nearing morning and the sun was starting to rise. There were cops all around and in their house which I quickly told to go. Right now, being here is not going to do that boy any good. Only one stayed to guard outside of the house, and me, of course, being the current family liaison. One of the problems with being the liaison with the family of an abductee is that after you make the initial connection with them, you don't get to stop being their liaison until the unsub is caught. That meant hours of being by myself in their house hearing the mother and father cry over the loss of their child. That meant almost never sleeping, or eating. And worst of all, that meant being without Spencers comforting touch and encouragement.
“Hi, I’m Agent Y/L/N, I'm the FBI agent assigned to your family.” They were sitting on the couch in the living room, their son’s toys covering the coffee table in front of them. The mother was crying soundlessly, almost catatonic, the father on the other hand was silent. He bounced his knee relentlessly and had no tears on his face.
“Would you mind if I ask you a few questions about Danny?”
The mother stayed quiet but the father looked up from his hands to speak.
“Do you think my son’s dead?”
Danny's mother withdrew her hand from her husbands and covered her mouth as she let out a sob.
“At this point we don't know much. But, i’m not here to lie to you, if this is connected to the other abductions then more than likely, yes”
The father still didn't cry, but instead just nodded his head solemnly.
I asked them all the questions I could. Where did Danny go to school? Is there anyone he liked to hang out with? Do you know anyone who would want to hurt Danny? Some of them were real questions that needed answers. But for the most part they were just to get a sense of the parents, and to make them feel a little less helpless. Spencer always says to me that the best thing you can do for these families sometimes is just to make them feel like they can help. Usually they cant, but sometimes taking their mind off of their own thoughts and focusing them can bring out little bits of information we never knew would be helpful. The morning came and went. I had a single orange and a cup of coffee that day. The night came and still, no news. I checked my phone constantly, even though I knew that my ringer was on. If they found Danny, alive or dead, I would be the first person they call. But until then, all I could do was wait.
Spencer~
Throughout the entire day I felt worried and distracted. Not just because I knew that the inevitable was close, but because usually, the team works in pairs. I deny it all the time, but I always work better when there is someone else with me. Not necessarily working with me- because I prefer to work alone- but just there. Someone who will remind me to slow down and take a deep breath or just let me talk out loud to them even though I probably won't listen to a word they say. But here I was, standing in front of a map, all alone, getting more and more frustrated by the moment and having not a single one of my teammates to get me back on track.
“Hello?” I finally took out my phone and called Y/N to get an update. On her that is, not the case.
“Hey, it's me, i'm just calling to see how you're doing” she sighed and I could practically see her rubbing a hand on the back of her neck and adjusting her glasses like she always does when she's stressed.
“That bad huh?”
“Yeah, not great. How's the map coming”
“It's not” this time it was my turn to sign into the phone.
“The the rest of the team is all out doing recon so i'm at a bit of a loss here”
“Oh, I'm sorry. Look Spence, I really shouldn't be on the phone, so-”
“Oh yeah, no I get it, of course.” She hung up without a word of goodbye and let me feel somehow even more frustrated than when our conversation began. I know she didn't mean to be condescending. I know she's just as frustrated as I am. But that doesn’t help me at the moment. After about another hour of waiting the rest of the team (minus Y/N) walked back into the precinct with downtrodden faces.
“We just found the body, kid” Morgan walked over to me and then sat down in a chair at the conference table. My heart broke. For once I was glad I wasn't with them today.
“Did you get a positive ID?” I turned to Rossi this time who stood next me looking at the map.
“Yeah. it's him”
Y/N~
I sat wide awake on the couch as it neared midnight. My phone lit up in the dark room with a call from Hotch.
“What's the news?”
“We just got a positive ID on Danny's body” I was silent.
“After you inform the parents I need you back at the precinct” I was shocked.
“Hotch, they still are going to need a liaison, my work isn't done yet”
“Y/N, their child is dead. There is nothing more that you can do for them”
“Fine, i'll be back as soon as I can” I hung up the phone angrily and gingerly knocked on the bedroom door, knowing that this moment would alter their lives forever.
I opened up the door to the conference room to find everyone sitting in chairs around the table. They all gave me sympathetic looks and Spencer tried to reach his arm out to me which I denied. I’m a profiler, I know what healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms look like. I know that pulling away from anyone and everyone is not a good coping mechanism, but none of them were there with me. None of them saw the look of terror on his mother's face when I knocked on her door in the middle of the night. None of them heard her screams or saw her crumple to the ground in her son's room, holding his pillow like it was all that was keeping her anchored.
I sat down on a chair in the corner of the room as we went through the profile and barely said a word. I saw Spencer looking back at me worried a few times while we gave the profile to the police and again as I went back into the corner of the conference room, still pulling away when he tried to grab my arm. Once everyone had gone back to researching or calling or going door to door, Spencer walked over to my chair in the corner. He put his hands on the arms of the chair and squatted down directly in front of me. Still being careful not to touch me, he tried to look me in the eyes but I averted them.
“Y/N, you should go to the hotel”
“Are you going to the hotel?”
“No but-”
“Don't tell me that I need it more than you. Or that I've had a harder time than you! We are all struggling, we all need sleep! I can handle this Spencer!” He flinched a little when I started to raise my voice but still stayed in his position. Hotch and Rossi upon hearing me raise my voice walked back into the room and over to Spencer.
“Y/N, Spencer's right, you need to get some sleep.”
“Is that an order?” Hotch paused for a moment and looked at Rossi who nodded.
“Yes, i'll see you in the morning” I clenched my jaw and Spencer quickly moved out of the way to let me get out of the chair, but not before taking a firm hold of my arm.
“This is a good thing, don't be mad at us for trying to help you” I took my eyes off of the floor to glare at him.
“Spencer, if you value our relationship or your hand, let go of my arm and stop with your condescending bullshit”
Spencer~
After she left I think it's fair to say that my mood did not improve. My frustration about the case turned into overall frustration with myself and everyone who happened to be around me at the time. I stood in front of the map without moving for hours just looking and going through all different theories in my mind. I was no longer alone but at this point that didn't matter.
“Hey Spence, do you want any coffee?” JJ approached me cautiously and I silently shook my head.
“Okay, well, uh, let me know if you need anything” she walked away to the hall just outside of the conference room where Morgan and Emily were standing. I could hear Emily talk to her through the glass doors that separated us.
“So?” Emily probed JJ as soon as the doors closed behind her.
“No good, didn't even speak”
“I'm worried about him'' There was a hum of agreement between the three of them before Emily opened the doors and walked in. she approached me with less caution than JJ, but still with a little apprehension.
“Hey there, Spencer, do you need any help?” i didn't speak a word or even shake my head this time.
“You know I'm pretty good at mapping it so it happens. I could also help with a key if you want? Or alternatively you could just talk to me? Or look at me? No? Okay, well i'm going go get myself a cup of coffee from the diner down the street, if you decide to speak let me know”
She asked me question after question and still I didn’t speak or move. Finally after staying for a moment of hostile silence she walked out of the room to where JJ and Derek were waiting.
“So?” This time JJ asked Emily
“I asked him like five questions and he didn't even try and correct my grammar.”
They all paused in silence for a moment before Emily turned to Derek.
“Alright Morgan, your turn, good luck” she patted him on the back and he sighed before walking into the room even more hesitantly than JJ was the first time.
“Hey Reid, you know, we’re all here for you if you-”
I turned around very slowly with a deadpan stare.
“Morgan, as politely as I can say this, if you and the rest of the team don’t leave me the fuck alone then I am going to take all 187 points of my IQ and shove them, up your-”
“Woah, woah,woah, okay pretty boy, I get the message”
He turned and walked briskly out of the room. I turned back to my board but could hear JJ talking still from the hall.
“I'm worried, I've never seen him like this.”
“The only times he's ever been this frustrated we all know who got him out of it.” Emily stated and turned to Derek.
“I’ll see what I can do. Hey Rossi, let's take a drive”
Y/N~
I had slept for a few hours but the nightmares woke me up. It was morning now, so at least I know I got a little bit of sleep. I took a shower, got dressed, and sat on the edge of my bed, not quite ready to face the repercussions of what happened last night. I put my head in my hands as I remembered last nights events. I fucked up. Bad. After a few minutes I heard a knock on my hotel room door and got up from the bed to answer it. Rossi and Derek stood there with hands on their hips and worried looks on their faces.
“Can we come in?”
“Um, sure?” He said it as they had already walked in the room and I went back to sitting on the edge of my bed as they stood in front of me. Derek was the first to break the silence and he tore me away from where I was looking as I fiddled with my hands.
“Look, Pretty boy is in a bad place and you're the only one we know can get him out of it. If we want to catch this guy we need him, and to get him back on track we need you” he stopped and sighed.
“Well, I have been ordered to stay here, so I guess you'll have to talk to our supervisor about that” Rossi grimaced as I said it and pointed to him. He put his head down for a second and then took a seat on the bed next to me.
“Look kid, you were in a horrible place and I know that you know that. If you want to stop feeling helpless, If you want to get that boy the justice that he deserves, then we need your help. Spencer needs your help. You are the only person in the world that could help him right now, so I need you to suck up your pride, and come with us.”
I gulped and sighed before standing from the bed.
“Fine. But you both owe me a drink” They laughed and opened the door for me as we left the hotel.
When the three of us arrived at the precinct and walked into the main area by the vending machines we saw a group of officers crowding around the hallway to the conference room. I walked right up to JJ and Emily who were making their way through the crowd towards me. JJ was the first to speak over the low murmur of the people crowding the hallway.
“Hey, thank god you're here!” She sounded so relieved you would have thought I’d saved her life.
“Um thanks? What's going on?” After I spoke I heard a loud thud and a crash coming from inside the conference room and a few people backed up from the windows. Emily got really close to me as she spoke.
“Um, Spencer’s...throwing things” I cocked my head to the side and was about to ask what she meant when another object, a book i think, hit the window in front of me.
“Holy, shit” I said with conviction and without another word walked to the front of the crowd and opened the glass doors.
Spencer was facing away from me, but still throwing markers, and wherever he could get his hands on, at the window. Finally as he heard me approaching he stopped throwing things and put both of his palms to his forehead. As I got closer I could hear his heavy breathing and see the damage he had done. When I finally got close enough to his back I put one hand on his shoulder and the other on his arm gently. He flinched a little but didn't move away or try to get me off of him. I got on my tiptoes to whisper quietly into his ear.
“Spence, I love you and I'm sorry, but I need you to calm down right now because the team needs you. okay?” I kept my hands on him and heard him gulp in between his heavy breaths. After a minute his breathing started to slow a little.
“Good. I'm going to go get you a glass of water and i’ll be back in just a second” I took my hands off him and walked over to the door where JJ and Rossi were standing guard.
“JJ could you get me a glass of water?”
“Of course”
“Rossi, can you make everyone get away from the hallway and the window, there's too many people, I wont be able to get him to calm down if his senses are in a constant overdrive from the sounds” He nodded quickly as JJ came back with a glass of water in her hand. I took it from her and walked back into the room with Spencer as Rossi-with help from Hotch- started to disperse the crowd.
“Here, drink this” I guided him to a chair and he sat down to drink the glass. After a few sips I put my hand on his back and leaned forward so he could see my face fully.
“Okay, now I need you to tell me everything you know”
Spencer~
After a few minutes of drinking water I began to tell her about everything I knew for the location. At some point while we were talking I figured out where the unsub was and Morgan and Emily successfully got him and saved another young boy. As soon as he was processed we all decided that we wanted to leave as soon as possible, and not stay another second in that place. Even though it was the middle of the night Rossi was able to get the jet ready for us in an hour and we started the long flight home.
I looked In front of me on the couch where Y/N was snuggled into my side and rolled onto my back so she could place her head on my chest. Her eyes were closed but her breathing told me that she was still awake and while she was I wanted to make sure she heard one last thing before this treacherous trip was over.
“I never said thank you” She turned her head on my chest so that she could look at me, but in the dark and quiet of the jet, it was clear she couldn't really see me anyways.
“For what?”
“For what you did back there, I never said thank you, so… thank you” She smiled widely at me but kept her eyes closed in the dark.
“Well, thank you. For not making me feel like I was helpless” she opened her eyes when she said it and it made me smile broadly. I kissed her head and turned back on my side so that I could pull her close to me.
Rule #2, every little touch, every little word that she says brings me comfort whether she knows it, or not. I think that might have been the easiest rule to follow, after all, when you love someone just being around them is enough comfort.
2023 Hyundai Santa Fe - Houston Auto Web
In the 2021 model year, the Hyundai Santa Fe had a redesign, and in 2022, an extra XRT variant was added. Allow us atHouston Auto Web to go through what to expect from the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe if you're searching for a dependable midsize SUV for you and your family to travel around Oak Creek, West Allis, Racine, and beyond.
Tumblr media
The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe receives less praise than the Korean brand's larger SUV lineup, but it still stands out and has appealing features. The midsize Santa Fe, which sits between the little Tucson and the three-row Palisade, includes two rows of seating and a variety of powertrain choices. An unimpressive 2.5-liter inline-four engine with 191 horsepower is the norm; a stronger turbo-four with 277 horsepower is an option, and it comes with our recommendation. With either front- or all-wheel drive, both engines are offered. Hyundai also provides a hybrid version of the Santa Fe with 226 horsepower and an EPA-rated 36 mpg in the city. The plug-in hybrid vehicle has 260 horsepower, a combined MPGe rating of 76, and an estimated electric-only range of 31 miles. The capacious 2023 Sante Fe, which has a low base price and a comfortable ride, is ranked in the middle of the pack among mid-size SUVs, mostly because of a particularly sluggish base engine.
What's New for 2023?
Other than a reorganization of the basic equipment, not much is different for the Sante Fe in 2023. Depending on the trim level, Hyundai modifies the front fascia and does away with the SEL Convenience package. For improved sound insulation, the SE model and higher models now have acoustic-laminated front windows. They also have puddle lamps that illuminate the area around the doors. The SEL now comes standard with a 10.3-inch center touchscreen, rear sunshades, adaptive cruise control that is based on navigation, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Both of these are now included as standard equipment on all hybrid models, along with a navigation system that can receive updates wirelessly. Finally, Hyundai's Highway Driving Assist semi-autonomous drive mode and the larger touchscreen are now included as standard equipment for the plug-in hybrid.
Interior and Exterior
It is anticipated that the Santa Fe will continue to be the same 5-passenger SUV as it was in earlier model years. Other than standard color updates and features particular to certain option packages, not many changes are anticipated for the exterior.
The Santa Fe is the ideal SUV to comfortably carry the entire family on the upcoming road trip thanks to its spacious first and second rows. With the rear setbacks in place, the cargo area additionally provides more than 36 cubic feet of capacity.
Tumblr media
Performance
The 2023 Santa Fe offers two different engine options. The first choice is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with an 8-speed automated transmission and 191 horsepower. A 281-horsepower turbo 4-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is the second option. Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive are options for either power plant.
Technology
Both a conventional 8.25-inch touchscreen display system and a 10.25-inch display system will be available for the Santa Fe. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wirelessly compatible with the standard touchscreen.
love on tour series // previous part
Tumblr media
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
New York always treated you well, but you were happy to continue on with the tour. Harry was excited to be in Wisconsin. He shared how he was a big fan of the Green Bay Packers. You were too kind to burst his bubble that you already knew. He wore that fact about himself with pride, easily slipping it in interviews or spotting out fans in the crowd wearing a jersey.
There's something about visiting new cities with Harry. It makes them memorable and holds a new place in your heart. It really is about the memories because if it weren't for him, you'd find nothing remarkable about Wisconsin. It's a great state, just not meant for you.
Everyone was excited for show day, lots of chatter and laughter were heard around the arena, and orders to fix lights or secure wardrobe was ready.
It seemed like a great day, except you noticed Harry was quiet today, reserved. You had no idea what it could mean or how to help, he was always talkative and cuddly, yet today you've only received a few kisses and a single "I love you."
To be honest, it made you worried. No one else seemed to pick up on it. You gave him space but were near in case he needed you. You hoped he would.
It went like that all day; the soundcheck was calm. He walked out with you holding your hand, grinned, and kissed you repeatedly as you told him "I love you" repeatedly as he was yelled at to get on stage. Not as present on stage, made little comments but no jokes as usual. The band assumed he was tired, but Mitch shot you a look. You shrugged, not knowing what it could be.
After that, you had dinner with Mitch and Sarah. Well, the parents ate while you and Harry watched over the young bub, who was growing quickly during this tour. He shared small smiles with the young baby, mainly leaving you to chat about nothing with the baby and your friends at the same time.
Ayae came in search of Harry when it was time to get ready, as she liked starting with him in case anything came up at the last minute. She knew she had time. He got up, not looking to see if you were following until he got to the door, turning to see you seated, not having given the baby back. You urged him to go on, saying you'd be there soon.
To your surprise, he listened, nodding, and whether he liked to admit it or not, all he wanted was some time alone, and you'd get that for him.
"You look like a creamsicle." You smiled, closing the door behind you, moving towards him to fix his collar, but stopped when he turned to look at you.
Harry narrows his eyes at you, "are you laughing at me?"
You laugh, "what, no. I happen to love creamsicles a lot, second only to paletas de fresa."
Harry relaxes and meets you halfway, presses a kiss to your lips, "fine."
He walks back over to the mirror, smoothing out the peach shirt with lace overlay tucked into his cream wide-leg trousers and leather boots. Harry looks stunning. It might be the first time you didn't greet him with a direct compliment that made him feel a little insecure.
"Harry,"
"Yes, my love."
"I think you look amazing. Sorry if you thought differently." Your words are sincere, making him turn to look at you.
He opens his arms wide, gesturing for you to come closer, and you do so. You tuck your face in his chest, allowing him to rest his chin on top of your head. "Don't have to apologize. I know what you think, could see it in your eyes. Just feeling a bit off tonight."
"Do you want to be alone for a bit?"
"You wouldn't mind?"
You take a step back, wanting to look up at him, "of course not. Alone time is good."
"I know, I know."
You pat his chest. "Tell you what, I'll go hang out with Elin, and you meditate and relax. You've got half an hour before they come knockin'."
"Thank you."
"Course," you peck his lips before grabbing your phone and walking towards the door but stop at the sound of Harry calling your name.
"You'll come back right to wish me luck."
"If that's what you want."
"I do, I really do."
"Then I'll be here and take you to the others. How does that sound?"
"Perfect."
You walk out, hoping he takes the time to relax; you know better than anyone what it's like having a day off, not focusing on anything. It happened a lot when your grandparents passed away, but with time that stopped, it also had to do with the help of your therapist. Now those kinds of days hit randomly or when their birthdays or anniversaries are approaching. Something you're thankful Harry won't be around to see, at least for now.
All in due time.
You bump into Sarah shaking you out of your thoughts, telling you she's off to change the fussy bub in her hands, and you offer her company that she happily accepts. Truthfully, you're glad for the distraction.
Tumblr media
You're there wearing your cozy cream Pleasing sweater enjoying the band on stage dancing around to "Sunflower," allowing yourself to take in the positive environment around you. The pit is always dancing and singing along, but this crowd is surprisingly louder, meeting his energy ten times as much, and Harry feeds off it.
There were lots of stares from Harry, more than usual. He kissed you long and passionately and wished him good luck. He assured you he was fine, and you believed him. His time alone let him get his head on straight and get out of his funk. You didn't know how much Harry appreciated giving him time apart; as much as he wants to spend every minute with you, he would rather be with you than alone with his thoughts.
Mediation is something Harry had made you try more, and honestly, it cleared your mind a lot. You did Yoga to center yourself, but honestly, you haven't found the need during the last month because Harry's a comfort for you. Strangely, you never thought you'd find yourself dependent on someone else, not that you need him to move forward. No, you know you're worth it when you're alone, but when he's by your side, it reminds you that someone is supporting you. That they are with you one hundred percent, giving their all just like you. It's the best feeling.
Harry is on stage singing, a cheese hat on his head. It brings you close to tears. Everyone around you with their phones out zoomed in on the moment. Gosh, he really does anything when he's up on the stage.
It's time for his small intermission where he speaks to the fans, reads some signs. He walks around when he stops chuckling to himself before asking if he can read the sign. He, of course, gets the go-ahead, and being the drama queen he is, he clears his throat, "How does the moon cut his hair?" Harry waits, going silent, waiting for the fans to yell a bit, and the sign flips. "He eclipsed it." He shouts, earning another round of cheers. "Ohhh… that's a stinker."
You laugh, knowing very well he'd be telling his mum the joke over the phone.
The show continues on, and you dance your heart out for those fifteen minutes with your friends around you. It's been a long time since you've been in an environment so loving where you have a friend in every corner, and if you're honest, you never want it to end.
The band extends their exit, your grin wide as you see Pauli run off the stage loaded with gifts from the crowd. Sarah strolled slowly behind, waving, with Mitch following behind, smiling at a person in the crowd offering her his guitar pick. If you had kept looking, you would have seen the girl collapse to the floor in tears, overwhelmed.
You exit, following close behind the others that had stayed behind, making your way to Harry, who had already begun to strip down from his outfit of the night.
"Didn't think everyone would be getting a free show," you tease, pushing the door wider to slip in.
"Love, hi. I'm ready to leave." He shrugs.
Harry slips on his Pleasing hoodie and grey sweats. He offers you a soft kiss as he moves past you to get his bag, eager to leave the arena.
"Proud of you," you whisper.
He stops what he's doing and turns to face you. There's a look in his eyes you don't recognize, but in the next second, he's wrapping you up in a hug. It brings you a calm that you had been missing and knows he must be feeling the same.
"Thank you, I love you."
"I love you too. Meet you out front?"
"Five minutes?"
You nod, removing yourself from his hold, pressing a much longer kiss than he had given you before.
Tumblr media
At the hotel, you offered to run Harry a bath, and he happily agreed, showering you in kisses just for the thought alone.
You give Harry his time alone, assuring him to relax, not wanting him to rush. He thanks you as you walk out. You change into a shirt that might be Harry's and sleep shorts, knowing it gets hot with Harry, who likes being cuddled right on top of you each night. Not that you minded, you just hated waking up sweating. Thanks to him, you learned to sleep with less clothing, making your mornings that much more fun.
You pick up a book that Elin had lent you, telling you she could not put it down. It's a good book, but you don't allow yourself to get lost knowing Harry could come out anytime soon.
It takes him 45 minutes to come back, knuckling at his eyes, fighting back the sleep that has started to sit in after the adrenaline rushed night.
Harry smiles at you, lifting the covers, scooting right next to you until he's comfortable laying his head right over your heart. The sigh he releases is one of relaxation, thankful to finally be alone after an eventful day.
"Thank you."
You set your book on the nightstand, slipping your hands into his damp curls, wanting to focus all your attention on your tired boyfriend. "For what?"
"For taking care of me."
You chuckle, "I know you like baths."
He shakes his head, pressing a kiss to your heart through your sleep shirt, "no, earlier."
"It's okay."
"I was overwhelmed, "he confesses.
"By?"
"You."
His response is unexpected. You feel yourself tense up and hope he missed it, but it's impossible with him laying on top of you.
"Not like that," he continues, not giving you a second to question him. "I love you. And you love me."
"I do."
"I know, and well, there's so much you give me, and I–I didn't know if you felt the same. That I love you like you love me."
You feel your eyes well up with tears. He was questioning himself more than anything, "Oh Harry, I feel it."
"Do you?"
"How could I not?" He lifts his head to look at you. "You kiss me and hold my hand. Make me laugh with your terrible jokes. Don't get bothered when I forget a word in English, only knowing the Spanish version."
He giggles, "forgot blender."
"Alright, don't need to bring it up," you joke, loving that he's laughing with you.
"I love everything about you, how you put your cold toes on me to warm up, to claiming you like my grilled cheese even though it always ends up too burnt," he frowns at the thought.
"It's the love that counts." You remind him as you have multiple times. "Harry, it might not always be easy, but I hope you know I love you. I'm going to fight for you, for us every single day."
"I'll fight for us too, my love."
You both go silent, letting your declarations sit in the air for a moment.
"Can I take you out tomorrow?" He asks sheepishly as if he's never asked you before.
"Yes, you can."
"Good," he rests his head back on your chest and knows it's time for bed. You reach up gently to turn off the light, ready for a good night's rest.
"I love you," you whisper into the darkness.
"I love you," echoed back.
Tumblr media
"You know we leave tomorrow, right?" you ask Harry as he lets you hold his hand in his lap using his other hand to hold the steering wheel as he drives you to the mystery location.
"Yes, I do." He assures you are making a right turn. "I also wanted to take my girlfriend out for our month anniversary."
You scrunch your nose at that, only a month. That's a bit insane; you feel like it's been longer, and Harry has expressed he feels the same. You aren't sure what you're going to do when you're not seeing each other every day.
"Romantic."
"I try," he giggles.
He takes his final right turn, and that's when you see he's brought you to a movie theatre. You sit up in your seat, taking a look around; the lot is half empty for a premiere night.
"You brought me to see Eternals. I'm so excited."
"Excited to see me?"
"Sure, your two minutes of screen time," you tease.
"Bel," he rolls his eyes as he pulls into a parking lot.
"Kidding, very proud of you. This is the start of something really incredible for you, and I'm proud of you."
"Thanks, love." Harry pecks your lips and jumps out of the car, running to your side to open your door. A true gentleman.
After walking in, the workers don't bat an eye at either of you. Harry gets popcorn, and M&M's something about them being the perfect combination. You're too sweet on him to judge him.
The movie theatre brings you so much joy, as much as it did when you were a young girl. Your parents brought you for every significant moment in life. You watched films you didn't recognize to the Hollywood Blockbusters, and it didn't end with them. Your grandparents kept that tradition alive for you.
You find a bit of your family in all that you do.
Harry got the middle seats reserved in row H. Not all the way in the back and not at the very back where it felt like you might strain your neck.
"Good seats, amor."
"I debated honestly."
You chuckle. That sounds very much like him.
"I love previews," he confesses.
"Makes me excited," you smile at him, bouncing in your seat, ready for the film to start when you hear the intro music to West Side Story. You pull your phone out of your sweater pocket and begin filming. Zooming in closer for Rachel Zegler. The rising Colombian actress.
You feel Harry watching your every move, but pay him no mind as you post it to your Instagram story. "Rachel Zegler, our maria" is the caption, and you know all your fans will have a field day begging to know what movie you're watching and if you're working on something new with her as a co-star.
"Do you go to the movies a lot, love?"
"I try," he grabs your hand, placing it in his lap, encouraging you to keep going. "Haven't tried as we've been on tour."
"My apologies."
You shake your head, "all good." You promise.
"I love consuming as much as making," you continue on about how it's important to watch all because there is always something to learn, good and bad.
The lights went off, and in a few minutes, the film would begin.
"This cast is amazing," you whisper, still respecting the few others sitting around you.
"They are," he shares.
"Are you excited to watch?"
"I am."
"Do you know what scene they used?"
"I do."
"Hmm...you look nice with red hair," you comment.
Harry turns his head to look at you, and you giggle, knowing he didn't expect that, "okay, you have seen the scene."
"No," you lie.
"Bel,"
"Okay, maybe."
"Oh, you impatient girl."
"But I saw it a few months ago. A friend sent it over, very discreetly."
"So you know," he trails off.
You shush him as the title words begin to appear. Time to enjoy the movie and then Harry for his two-minute intro.
You're relatively quiet during the entire film, releasing gasps here and then. Leaning forward when scenes got intense, Harry swore he saw you wipe your eyes, but he couldn't be sure. You sit there quietly, letting the actor's name flash across the screen; it's when Eternals flashes on the screen do you squeeze his hand in a small way to tell him you're excited.
After the scene fades out, you're looking at Harry with the biggest smile on your face, and Harry can't help but replicate it. You press a chaste kiss to his lips, "that was you."
He chuckles, "it was."
"You're an eternal."
He nods proudly, "I am."
"Okay, was it weird seeing yourself on the big screen? I know it's been a while. Personally, it always feels a bit weird. Like it's you but also not." You try to explain.
Harry smiles, bringing you in close for another kiss, "it is odd, but something to get used to. Got two new films releasing soon."
"Trust me, you will never get used to it."
You turn to look at the screen and see Harry's name next to his character Eros.
"That's insanely hot."
Harry smirks, "think so."
"Oh yeah, Gemma Chan as the first name. Proud of her," you tease.
"Bel."
"Teasing."
After the second credit scene ended, Harry and you exited the theatre and began your return to the hotel. He promised you take-out on the way back, and who were you to deny such a treat.
"Favorite characters?" Harry asks as he munches on your shared friends he claimed he didn't want.
You take a bite of your veggie burger, taking a second to think, "hmm…Makkari and Druig, oh and Phastos.”
"Not Eros," he teased.
"As much as I found him attractive, I need to know more about him before saying he's a favorite."
"Is that so? Well, what if I tell you about him?"
"Okay, I'll bite. Go ahead."
You finish off your burger, taking a drink of your water as Harry throws the trash out. "Well, he's handsome."
"Noted," you interrupt. He shoots you a playful glare for cutting him off.
"As I was saying, he's handsome, kind, and funny."
You move over to the bed as he discusses how Eros is all about the pleasure he brings to others. Having the best time, the joy he brings others.
"Hmm…I could get behind him."
"Yeah, that's good."
"Just one thing?"
"What's that?" Harry asks curiously if you're going to keep this going or not.
"Well, I have to see how good he is at bringing pleasure," Harry instantly knows what you're referring to, removing his shirt as he moves to lay on you on the king bed.
"Oh baby, you have no idea what I'm capable of."
You smirk, knowing you're in for a good time for a long time.
Going to the West Coast would bring something new, but for now, you'd enjoy the city you were in tonight for one last night.
Keep Up
Henry McHenry x Reader
TW: tad bit of angst, mention of divorce, reader feels a bit insecure, henry is an ass but we’re working on him, brief mention of addiction/sobriety
A/N: Writing is hard but I’ve been working really hard on this so I wanted to share it even though there was really no point to the plot I just wanted to write for Henry. I have literally no posting schedule/writing schedule anymore. This takes place post Waltz in the Storm, only we’re gonna say Ann survived and took Annette and divorced Henry okay bye ily all so much.
...
“Are you sure it’s safe?” Your eyes are round and full of mixed emotions — trust, fear, maybe some excitement — as you grip the helmet shoved into your hands with a vice grip.
Henry watches you from the seat of the Harley he had bought with the money from the sale of his and Ann’s estate after the divorce. It’s ridiculous, really. Completely over the top, particularly for someone who was just making a comeback in their career and trying to get back to some sort of financial stability. “Just get the fuck on the bike and try to keep up with me, will you?” His tone leaves no room for argument, his face is playfully skeptical.
The red Harley Davidson motorcycle is “fully loaded” as the sales person had told the two of you as you made your way across the show room floor just a few days ago. It’s completely with heated grips and a backrest in the passenger’s seat and a full scale infotainment system for Henry to blast his favorite music between gps directions as he sees fit. He’d passed on the built in defensive driving mechanism and balked at the Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine and even sprung for the most expensive of saddlebags. Hell, he’d even told you he was planning on getting the leather embroidered with his initials.
Did this surprise you? No, not in the slightest.
Henry is eccentric.
It’s your default response to the questions and comments and concerns expressed by each member of your social circle from the moment you’d mentioned that you’d been seeing someone. Questions of who, what, when, where, why, and how and worries about whether or not someone who shined so bright would be good for you and whether it would even work.
Honestly, you ask yourself the same thing almost every day. If you didn’t love him, you wouldn’t be able to see it.
He asks himself how you can see it every time he wakes up to your hair spread across his pillows.
Back to the matter at hand. You. Him. Big scary motorcycle.
You turn your feet inward almost absentmindedly, standing pigeon toed and letting your shoulders tense up as he kicks off the bike with an exaggerated groan and comes to stand in front of you. “I’ve never done this before.”
Henry pulls off his own helmet, tosses it to rest on the seat, and smiles knowingly at you. “That’s never stopped you before.”
“Shut up.”
“Ann never —”
Your eyebrows furrowed and your lips parted just a bit. It was the one thing he continuously did even a year and a half into your relationship that made you lose your mind. He stops mid sentence when he sees the disappointment on your face.
“I’m not Ann.” You say, trying so, so hard to not ruin the night. He’d been waiting for a break in the much needed rain falling over LA county for the past week to take you out and show you a good time. Try as you might, your lips start to tremble ever so slightly and you let the helmet clatter to the ground, beyond frustrated with him. With yourself even?
He rushes forward, hands all over you and your face before you can even bend at the waist to pick up the discarded the mixture of plastic and fiberglass at your feet. “I didn’t mean it.”
“You did it again.”
“But I didn’t mean it.” Henry says, pleads with you. His brown eyes convey the honest to goodness truth of it all and you know he’s good for his word. He really didn’t mean to.
The past year was tumultuous, everyone knew that. Finding Ann stranded at sea on the coast just ten miles away from where Annette slept safely on board the yacht with her father. The accusations, the words thrown like daggers. The bliss and fervor and passion of their early days slipping away faster than vinegar leaves the bottle when you pour it, the whole ordeal just as sharp and bitter to taste.
You’d been introduced to it just as the papers had been served to Henry’s modest home that had been inhabited for six months before Ann had made her final decision.
He’s grateful for your loyalty and tells you that much just about every day. There isn’t a day where you doubt his love for you — how could you when you watch him work on himself in therapy and in the gym and with the way he tosses his cigarettes to the side and limits himself to a carton a week somehow?
However, the one thing you had zero tolerance for was being compared to Ann.
Henry bites his tongue as he looks at you. He represses the urge to yell and ask why it always has to be about you, why you always have to nit pick when he does something you don’t care for. He takes a deep breath and focuses on the feel of your skin and how it’s almost as if it’s a balm for all of the negative emotions and thoughts crammed into his head. He reminds himself that you aren’t doing anything wrong by calling him out on this, that it’s appropriate to. Rather than lash out, he takes a deep breath and says the words he had been working so, so hard to work into his vocabulary in sincerity over the past year. “I’m sorry.”
The apology rings through your ears and settles in your mind. You sit with it for a moment and think about the Henry you had heard of prior to meeting him — the violent outbursts, the juxtaposition of his drinking and smoking habits in conjunction with his almost militant like work out routine. The selfishness and the narcissism and the screaming.
Your brow knits together as you process his words. “You’re sorry?” The words felt foreign on your own tongue, you couldn’t imagine how he must feel.
He nods slowly, giving you a once over as his cheeks begin to heat up. “I’m really, really sorry.” Henry promises, swears it. “It’s force of habit and that doesn’t make it right. I’m sorry. I’m working on that.”
You nod after the last word leaves his lips and you’re reminded of the fact that, yes, he is working on it. He’s working on a lot of things and you remind yourself that the whole reason he bought the bike was to celebrate one year of sobriety. With bated breath, you stand on your toes and kiss his cheek bone gingerly, an acknowledgement in it of itself. You know Henry doesn’t need your words.
Henry leans down and kisses your forehead, then crouches and grabs your helmet. He stays close to the ground for a long moment and falls to his knees. He buries his face in the fabric of your shirt and rests his arms just around the small of your back, memorizing the feel of holding you and relishing in the way your hands almost automatically move to thread through his hair, no longer matted from neglect and back to its usual thickness and shine.
After a few moments of silence, you pull back just a bit to look at him. “I’m proud of you.” You whisper, eyes shining with a mixture of emotion.
His own eyes bore into your face, always working on committing whatever it was he was currently feeling to memory. “Thank you for helping me.”
A smile breaks out on your face and you shrug before leaning down and kissing his temple. “Always.” You murmur. “Now, will you please get me on the bike? Show me what I’ve been missing all these years.”
Henry smiles, the expression of satisfaction much wider than your own flash of your teeth. “You sure?” He asked, repeating your words from just a few minutes prior back to you.
“I’m sure.” You respond while trying to suppress the giggle that threatened to bubble past your lips at his teasing. You can’t help but cackle as he all but drags you to the bike and helps you put on the helmet, letting you inspect the bike before hopping on. When you finally straddle the seat, his left hand comes to rest over your arms, now looped around his waist and hanging on for dear life, before he hits the ignition and punches it, riding off in pure bliss and leaving the events of the past year behind, as it should be.
Rain patters against the window panes, filling the room with the cozy kind of silence that leaves you feeling lethargic no matter what time of the day it is. A thunderstorm had enveloped Hawkins like a shroud, refusing to budge despite the sunny morning that had greeted them.
Steve is all loose limbs, and comfortable warmth, cozy under the arms that wrap around his waist. He's got his head tucked under Billy's chin, ear pressed against his chest to listen to the steady beat of that heart. A heart that he almost thought he would never hear again after-
"Let's get out of this town. Drive out of the city, away from the crowds."
The words are spoken so quietly that if Steve didn't have his head on Billy's chest he doubts he would have been able to hear them. They are enough to make him lose his grim train of thought. Maybe for the better.
Wait, what?
It takes a moment for the words to register, a frown finding its way upon Steve's face. Propping himself up on his elbows he looks down at Billy with questioning eyes.
"Where would we even go?" Because he's not going to say no to an offer like that. Hawkins is too big at times, but other times it feels so small like he's suffocating just by existing among the borders of this town.
"Does it matter?" Billy's voice interrupts his thoughts, a gentle grin curling his lips. "We could just take one of the cars and drive out, see where the road takes us. Get out of Bumfuck, Indiana for a few days. Live a little."
"We live enough just by being in Hawkins."
"Fighting eldritch creatures from another dimension doesn't count."
"I don't know man, going toe to toe with a demodog makes me feel pretty alive."
Billy rolls his eyes but the way he tenses up, iron-clad defenses raising once again, makes it clear that he's serious about this. Steve doesn't give him time to take back his words though, leaning in to press a light kiss to the hollow of his throat.
After everything that happened with Neil, Billy almost dying and then moving in with him, Steve doesn’t have the heart to deny him this either.
"I will go with you. Wherever it is you want to go, even if it's to a shitty diner in Chicago three hours from here, then I will go with you."
He hopes Billy catches onto the real meaning of his words despite their playfulness. Because it's true, Steve would follow him back to California as long as that's what he wanted. As long as Billy asked him.
But he hadn't. And there was only a week left before Billy went back to California.
By now Steve had resigned himself and accepted the truth. That this thing they were doing, this sort of relationship they had stumbled upon, was bound to end just as summer did. The only thing he wished for, the single thing he would ever ask of Billy, was to at least remember him.
“But for real, is there somewhere you want to go?” He asked, hoping to push the depressing thoughts of his love life to the back of his mind for now. If he wanted to have a crisis about how everyone he had ever loved always left him, he could do that once Billy left for UCLA.
“I know your music taste is all pop bullshit but you have heard of Summerfest, right?”
“The music festival in Milwaukee? It’s been advertised on the radio for a while now. Something about Bryan Adams being there, I think.”
“Yeah, that’s the one.” Did Billy sound nervous? Why? “You want to go?”
Steve blinked in confusion, sitting up a bit so he was straddling Billy’s lap and could face him. “I mean, it would be cool but the tickets sold out weeks ago.”
“Got in contact with some old friends from Cali. Managed to snatch a couple of tickets.” Billy shrugged, smirking up at Steve despite the slight hint of nervousness. “Wanna take that drive now, Princess?”
---
A day later they had everything ready.
The Camaro's trunk was packed with two duffel bags with enough spare clothes for a week, snacks, bottles of water, and a first aid kit Joyce had forced into their hands before leaving. Steve hoped they wouldn't need to use it, though.
It was Jonathan's gift that had made him tear up a little. He had fixed his old Polaroid camera and offered it to Steve with a decent amount of film already inside it. Something told him that it might've been Nancy's idea but either way he was glad.
He didn’t know he needed a physical way to remember this week but was glad to have it.
Billy doesn't comment on it once they are back in the car but he does raise his eyebrows in a silent question. Steve just shrugs, not feeling like untangling the complicated knot of emotions lodged somewhere inside his chest.
---
It's still light outside when they make their first stop.
There's no finesse in the way they scramble into the backseat of the Camaro, nothing delicate about the way Billy tugs him into his lap, just desire and barely contained desperation. Then they are kissing again, wet and messy and perfect.
They are parked in the middle of some woods somewhere on the way to Chicago. Steve's not sure exactly where anymore, having forgone the map maybe half an hour after they left Hawkins. It's not like it matters. It's not like anything matters other than the heat of Billy's skin on his. His kisses, the bruises he litters on pale skin, and the way he can't seem to stop touching Steve like he will disappear if Billy so much as blinks.
And Steve understands. He really does. Because once summer ends and Billy has to leave Hawkins for UCLA, there will be no more moments like these. No more nights of having the blond next to him in bed when he goes to sleep. No more shared meals on the couch while going through his parent's VHS collection.
There will be no more them.
So instead of focusing on the unbearable ache the thought alone creates in his chest, Steve chooses to focus his attention on pushing Billy down against the leather seat and moving back so he can work on getting those tight jeans low enough for him to bring Billy's cock to his lips.
"Fuck! Baby, that feels so-" Familiar fingers bury themselves into his hair, pulling on the strands and making him moan. He relaxes his jaw then, looking up at Billy who seems to have caught on to his intentions if the smirk on his lips is anything to go by.
"You want me to fuck your mouth, baby? Make you choke on my cock?"
"Pwhease." Talking with his mouth as full as it is isn't easy but he's rewarded by the look on Billy's face. His eyes darken, his lips part and the grip on Steve's hair tightens. It’s enough to send heat pooling low in Steve’s abdomen, a muffled whine escaping his lips.
Billy starts up with slow, barely contained thrusts, his eyes never straying away from the sight between his legs. He knows how much Steve likes
Considering how keyed up they already were, it’s no surprise when Billy only lasts a few minutes before he's coming hot and heavy down Steve’s throat. He swallows everything, choking a little on the cock still inside his mouth. He only pulls away when the grip on his hair finally grows lax.
Steve barely gets enough time to catch his breath before Billy is surging up and dragging him into a messy kiss, licking into his mouth and chasing the taste of himself on those lips. It should be gross. Hell, it is gross. But somehow it's also one of the hottest things Steve's ever experienced and he can't help but moan into the kiss.
His breath hitches turning into a whine when he feels Billy's spit-slick hand inside his briefs, wrapping around his cock. He's already so sensitive that there's not a single ounce of shame in him as he ruts into the touch, needy sounds falling like raindrops from parted lips.
"Billy, Billy, please- Fuck, I want-"
"Jesus, you look so pretty like this. So needy. Gonna come for me already, baby?"
“Uh-huh”
“Ask me pretty, baby, c’mon.”
"Let me come, please Billy." Steve whimpers softly, arms coming up to wrap themselves around tanned shoulders. He's shaking from the pleasure, muscles tense and every nerve alight. So damn close, already.
It's then that Billy starts to jack him off in earnest, thumb pressing against that sensitive spot just under the head with each upward stroke, his mouth otherwise occupied with suckling at the freckles that litter the skin of Steve’s neck and shoulder.
“Billy I-” Steve’s eyes roll back and his teeth clamp down on his bottom lip in a futile attempt to muffle the loud moan that slips out from his chest. It’s only when he bats Billy’s hand away from his cock that he finally starts to feel like he can catch his breath again.
Fika
Fika: (Swedish origin) a moment to slow down and appreciate the good things in life
Summary: When Spencer Reid works a rough case there’s only two people in the whole world that can make him feel better.
Word Count: 3.3k
Pairing: Spencer Reid x Fem!Reader
Warnings: brief mention of case details (the usually criminal minds type stuff), implied death of a child (not Spencer and reader’s), other than that its fluffy
——
The case had been brutal, a grueling two weeks only made worse by the scorching heat of the Arizona sun. To be fair, all cases involving children weighed heavily on the team’s shoulders and hearts. But when presented with a mop of curls and pair of big brown eyes so breathtakingly similar to the ones he held so dear to his heart, it was safe to say Spencer Reid was unraveling at the seams. When he closed his eyes all he could see was that little girl’s face. All he could hear was her mother’s sobbing, a heartbreaking wail that rattled through his very soul, as J.J. delivered the horrendous news that they had been too late. They had caught the sick bastard and he would never see the light of day again but that didn’t erase the fact that their baby wasn’t coming home.
Later that night they had stumbled on to the jet, all bleary eyes and bruised bodies. ‘Exhausted’ didn’t even begin to cover they way they all felt. Rossi and Emily were asleep before take off and Morgan was nearly there ten minutes into the flight. Hotch was quietly doing paper work specifically to avoid sleep and the horrible dreams he knew this case was going to bring him. J.J. was FaceTiming Will and their boys, assuring them she would be home soon with new a baseball cap for each of them.
All the while Spencer didn’t know what to do with himself. He tried to read first but when the words of his favorite book failed to bring him any solace he tried to sleep. When he proved too fitful and the leather seat too stiff, he decided to try watching a film on his iPad. After a solid twenty minutes of not even hearing what the actors were saying he gave up on the film too, shucking his headphones off and stuffing them back into his satchel. Knowing full well he wouldn’t be able to concentrate on the board and it’s pieces, he didn’t even bother pulling the tiny chess board out of his bag. With a defeated groan he leaned his head against the seat and tried to go to sleep for the second time. Just as the cool tendrils of unconsciousness started weaving around him, he felt more than heard someone settle into the seat next to him.
“How are you holding up?” J.J.’s voice was soft and tender, a tone she probably used to sooth Henry and Micheal when they were upset. Normally the motherly tone would grate on Spencer’s nerves but truth be told, at the moment he welcomed its comforting cadence. She watched as he swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing in this throat and he was quiet long enough that she thought he was attempting to ignore her. After a few heartbeats, his eyes opened and his head lulled to the side so that he could look at her.
“They just looked so much alike J.J.,” similar to her own, his words were quiet but his voice wavered and cracked like all the grief and anxiety from the past two weeks were just now starting to bubble to the surface. J.J. attempted, and failed, to keep her face poised and collected. They all noticed the uncanny resemblance between Julia Hodges and Amelia Reid almost as quickly as Spencer did himself. He had managed to keep a calm front for the sake of the parents but he felt like there was something burrowing in his chest and attempting to rip him apart. He just simply could not stop imagining his family in place of their’s.
“There was this one case we worked a few years ago in Milwaukee,” she paused, trying to collect her racing thoughts before continuing, “It was a trafficking ring that we stumbled on. We thought it was just a kidnapping until we got there. The little boy looked so much like Henry; they even sounded the same.”
“I remember him,” Spencer’s voice was still a quiet rasp, “His name was Oliver Moore and he was five years old. Like Henry.”
His friend nodded slowly, her focus had turned to the table in front of them, her fingers absentmindedly tracing patterns onto its wooden surface. Even with that case being far behind them, it had been almost ten years ago now she realized, she still had nightmares about it. Unlike Julia Hodges though, they had gotten to Oliver Moore just in the nick of time it had seemed. But the conditions they had found him in... J.J. didn’t even know how to put it into words.
She nodded her head, blonde hair sliding over her shoulders and shrouding her face. “I kept in touch with his mother for a while. I just couldn’t let it go. How much he reminded me of Henry, I mean. I still have nightmares sometimes that it was Henry in his place.” Brushing her hair back behind her ears, she turned her attention back to Spencer then with eyes glassy but a small smile on her lips. “There are just some cases that you can’t shake. They feel sticky and slimy and even though we catch the bad guys and sometimes we’re able to save the people they were trying to hurt, it still feels like there’s this stain on your heart. And after a while its like all you can see in the world is the darkness and death. You just need to go home and hold her, Spencer. Love on her and kiss her and hug her. It will remind you that there are still good things in life, that there is still some innocence out there.”
He tried to smile but he knew it looked more like a grimace twisted on his face. J.J. gave his hand a sympathetic squeeze before standing and going back to her original seat beside Derek. This time when Spencer tried to fall asleep he succeeded.
——
Six hours and forty seven minutes later, he was pulling into his driveway with the nagging thought that sometimes he hated his job. He loathed having to be away this long. Truly, he really did. It made him feel like he never saw his family anymore, like he was missing all the important milestones in his daughter’s life. Like her fourth birthday party for example. There were still some balloons tied the the mailbox at the end of the drive and what looked like confetti and streamers all over the porch. He had called that morning to wish her a happy birthday and assured her he was going to bring a special surprise home for her but it did nothing to combat the guilt eating at his stomach for not actually being there.
He tugged a hand through his already unruly hair and let out a deep sigh as he climbed out of the car. As quietly as he could, he unlocked the door and walked inside the dark house, quick to disarm the alarm as to not wake his sleeping wife and daughter with its insistent beeping. With a somewhat renewed energy at the thought of seeing his favorite girls, he bounded up the stairs two at a time, carefully minding the extra creaky ones, then padding down the hall to his daughter’s bedroom. Eternally grateful for the well oiled hinges of the door, Spencer pushed on the white wood and Amelia’s bedroom door swung open silently. The covers were rumpled and pushed back but there was no curly headed little girl amongst them. For a harrowing second, Spencer felt his heart seize in his chest, his grip on the doorknob turning his knuckles bone white. But then he saw her slumped into her beanbag chair beside the tall white bookshelf, her favorite book opened on her lap. He couldn’t help the smile that split his face as he entered the room and scooped her up into his arms, the book falling to the carpeted floor with a soft ‘thud’.
He hugged her tightly to his chest, swaying back and forth ever so slightly. When everyone found out that Y/N was pregnant, the other parents on his team had told him that there was nothing compared to the love he would feel for his child. Spencer never doubted that he would love his children, not even for a fraction of a second. But what he felt on the day Amelia was born, and every day after, was like nothing he had ever experienced before. A tiny hand came up to rest on his cheek, pulling him away from this thoughts, and he turned his head to find a pair of sleepy brown eyes looking up at him. “Missed you daddy,” she yawned, her eyes already fluttering shut again.
He pressed a kiss to the crown of her head and whispered against her hair, “I missed you too angel. So much.” She smelt like her mother’s shampoo he noted with a smile. He carried her back to her bed and tucked her in the way she liked before placing another kiss on her forehead.
Just down the hall his own bedroom door was already opened, a soft yellow light spilling out into the hallway. Y/N must have waited up for him. Or tried to he realized with a small laugh as he saw her sitting almost exactly like their daughter had been just moments ago. With a book splayed open in her lap and her reading glasses slipping down her nose as her head lulled to the side, she was slumped against the headboard fast asleep. Spencer sat down at the foot of their bed and took his shoes off, tossing them in the general direction of their shared closet. Deciding to forego showering and brushing his teeth, he dressed for bed quickly and moved to turn off Y/N’s bedside lamp. Careful to note what page she was on, he slipped the book from her hands and moved it to the nightstand before reaching for her glasses.
She stirred then at the feeling of his hands near her face, she jumped slightly as her eyes slowly blinked open and a drowsy grin pulling at her lips when she realized it was him. “You’re home,” she rasped, her voice raw from sleep and the day of wrangling a house full of four year olds. Cupping her cheeks in his hands, he leaned down to press a soft kiss to her mouth. “I’m home,” he repeated with a smile, feeling the weight of anxiety slowly start ease from his chest. “How was the ballerina dinosaur party?” He didn’t even try to ask that with a straight face, every time he even thought ‘ballerina dinosaur party’ he practically erupted into a fit of giggles. But his daughter had gotten her stubbornness honestly and was determined that was to be the theme of her birthday party.
——
“Mia, have you thought about what kind of birthday party you would like to have?” He asked her as he flipped her pancakes on the hot griddle. When he didn’t get a response, he turned to look her to see she was staring rather intensely at the stack of coloring books in front of her on the kitchen table. She mumbled something then shook her head, curls bouncing at her shoulders and her little eyebrows drawing together in what her mother called her ‘baby genius face’. Spencer couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled out of him, “What are you thinking so hard about, baby?”
Amelia turned that precious little pout towards him then. “Don’t laugh at me, daddy. S’not nice.”
Spencer clamped his mouth shut, having to bite down on the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing again. Y/N strolled into the kitchen then with a brush, some hair ties and a spray bottle in her hands. “Yeah, daddy. S’not nice,” she echoed, turning to stick her tongue out at at Spencer before she set to work pulling Amelia’s hair into two little buns on the top of her head.
“Thank you, mama,” Mia said, flashing her mother a toothy grin.
“You’re welcome, sweet girl.” Y/N squished Mia’s cheeks and kissed her nose, earning a sweet peel of laughter. Spencer smiled at his girls as he plated the last of the pancakes and covered them in syrup. Y/N gaped at the plate when he set it in front of their daughter. Amelia, the resident sugar addict, on the other hand was practically drooling over it. “You,” she said, poking Spencer’s chest with her pointer finger, “are handling the sugar rush that’s going to give her.”
Spencer gave her a bashful smile and raised his hands in front of him, “You know all she has to do is look at me and I give her anything she wants. She could have asked for ice cream and I probably would have agreed. So really its your fault for asking me to make breakfast.”
With a playful slap to his chest she pushed past him to grab the other two plates sitting on the counter behind him. “For the love of god, Spencer Reid please do not give our daughter ice cream for breakfast. Ever.”
He laughed as he sat down in his designated seat across from his wife, and dug into his own stack of pancakes. They ate in silence for a few minutes before Amelia gasped, her fork clanging against her plate as she dropped it into the sticky sweet syrup. She was practically bouncing in her seat as she looked at her parents with wide, excited eyes. “I know what kind of birthday I wanna have!”
Clearly amused, Spencer set his own fork down and smiled at his mini me. “And what have you come up with, Mia?”
Her smile widened as she looked between her mother and father. “A ballerina dinosaur party!” The pure glee and excitement was practically radiating from her as she started clapping her sticky hands together, thrilled to no end with her clever solution to the ballerina versus dinosaur party dilemma.
“Well then, daddy and I will make that happen for you.” Y/N laughed and extended her hand out for Amelia to high five, she was clearly just as excited. Amelia slapped her mother’s hand before jumping out of her chair and running excitedly into her play room. Seconds later she came back into the kitchen, bouncing on the balls of her feet. “May I be excused, please?”
Immensely proud that the manners they were drilling into her were clearly sticking, Y/N beamed at Amelia before throwing her a wink. “Nice manners, sister! And yes you may. Go wash your hands before you play though.”
Amelia was racing off again then, calling out a muffled “thank you for breakfast!” as she washed her hands. Spencer was silent while Y/N stacked their plates and carried them to the sink. “What’s going on in that head of your’s, doc?”
“Ballerina dinosaurs-” was all he could say before Y/N cut him off.
“Are you really about to go tell that excited little girl that she can’t have a ballerina dinosaur birthday party for some scientific reason you’re about to pull out of your ass?” Knowing damn well that he wasn’t going to tell that sweet little face ‘no’ for anything in the world, she was smirking and leaning against the kitchen counter with her arms crossed over her chest.
Sliding down in his chair, he crossed his own arms and huffed out ‘no’. Y/N laughed and came around the table to sit in his lap, his arms instinctively wrapping around her waist and her’s going around his neck.
“How did she come up with that?” he wondered aloud. She might have only been three but they could already tell that she was following in her father’s footsteps, well on her way to becoming a child protege much like he was. But every ounce of her creativity came from her mother.
——
That earned him a soft laugh and a even softer, “It was really fun. We missed you though.” She took his hand in her’s and brought it up to press kisses against his knuckles. “How bad was it, Spence?”
He had spared her most of the nitty gritty details but for the most part she knew what happened. Talking it out with a third party frequently helped him, so her lending a listening ear wasn’t anything new to their relationship. The smile instantly dropped from his face and his shoulders sagged again. “Bad. Really bad,” he whispered as he stood and made his way around to his side of the bed. Y/N settled down into the covers and held her arms open to him. Spencer all but dove into her, burying his head into the crook of her neck and wrapping his arms around her as best he could given the way there were laying. They were quiet for a moment, the only sounds were the white noise maker that could just barely be heard from Amelia’s room and Spencer’s sniffles. Soft lips pressed a kiss to his temple and her hands started running through his hair, making sure to scratch his scalp the way she knew he found soothing. “Do you want to tell me about it, baby?”
He tensed in her arms but relaxed again after a heartbeat, breathing deeply against her neck. It poured out of him in a rush, in all the nasty detail he’d spared her from over the phone. Y/N’s breath hitched and her arms tightened around him when he told her how much Amelia resembled Julia Hodges, and she was immensely grateful he hadn’t told her about that part until now. “I just,” he started again after a long pause, “I couldn’t stop thinking about you and Mia.”
“Oh, Spence,” she cooed, trying desperately not to let her voice crack. “We’re okay, baby. We’re okay.”
“Can we throw her another birthday party? Just something small with the team maybe? I really hate that I missed it,” his voice was small, almost as if he was afraid she’d say no.
“Of course we can,” she laughed softly, “I’ll call everyone tomorrow and set something up.”
He smiled and lifted his head to press a sweet kiss to her mouth. A sweet kiss that quickly melted into something more as he settled between her thighs and his hands slowly slipped under the sweatshirt she was wearing. The pair were so caught up in each other that they failed to hear the soft patter of tiny feet running down the hall. The door slowly creaked open and a tiny little girl appeared, her pajamas rumpled and eyes wide. They jerked apart as Amelia called out to them. “Mama? Daddy?”
Y/N was shoving Spencer’s hands away, trying not to laugh as his fingers ghosted against her sides. “What’s wrong baby?”
“I had a bad dream,” she mumbled softly, looking down at her bare feet. “Can I sleep in your bed?”
Spencer smiled at her as he patted the space between him and his wife. Quick little feet made a mad dash for the bed and she pulled herself up with a quiet ‘umph’. Amelia burrowed under the covers, snuggled comfortably between her two favorite people in the whole world. Y/N wrapped Amelia up in her arms and Spencer turned toward them and threw his arm over them, his hand a comforting weight on his wife’s hip. Just as sleep had started to claim him, he felt Amelia start to squirm.
“Daddy?” she whispered softly into the dark room.
“Yes princess?” His voice already turning gravelly, his tired eyes opening to see his wife smiling at him over the top of Mia’s head. Both of them already knew what she wanted before she even voiced her request. And she sounded so hopeful that he didn’t dare deny her when she asked softly, “Will you tell me a story?”
He smiled and pulled his girls closer to him. “A long time ago,” Spencer started, his voice soft, “there was a dinosaur who loved to dance…”
what about feeling homesickness and Calum comforting her?
thaxxx! i changed a bit, hope you like ❤
Home
He was standing in front of her house, it's was a fresh end of the afternoon in LA, with a cool wind and a pink-shaded sunset. He had a cigarette between his fingers in one hand and the other one was resting at his side after he knocked on the door. She opened and locked it with her key "night" he checked his iPhone '5:57 pm' "almost night. And you are gorgeous. As always" "thanks, you are too" she directed her gaze to the cigarette quickly, but not quickly as he dropped it onto the ground and stubbed his foot in it. She hated when he smoked. "thought you were going to quit" "I will" "yeah and I will fly away from this damn city" "what is wrong with LA?" "It isn't home" he knew she missed her hometown, Milwaukee, and he also knew she had duties in LA and she knew that too "babe..." "It's alright" she breathed deeply before look at her boyfriend and smile "thought we were going, huh?" "Yeah, sure, let's go" "let's go" he took her hand in his empty one and they walked to her car. She had a glowing conversible candy apple red 1966 Ford Mustang that Calum was never allowed to drive "why I cannot drive?" "You know why" "oh, come on. It's old shit, honey" "no! Almost kill me isn't 'old shit'" "was an accident and you just broke an ankle" "A leg" she sat on the driver's seat and he watched how good she looked in the sunset "hey!" She snapped her fingers "aren't you coming in?" "fuck! Sorry. it's your fault!" he jumped into the car and put on the seat belt "I will not apologize for you having a terrible sense of beauty" she had low self-esteem sometimes "my sense of beauty is perfect" he leaned closer and cupped her face "just as you" "you are perfect" she smiled and pulled his neck to a passionate kiss. A calm and warm, but passionate kiss "but, seriously babe, let me drive" "no!" she turned on the engine, adjusted the mirror and backed up the car from the driveway without taking her gaze from the mirrors "that's how you back up the car with safety" he groaned, throwing his head back "It happened once! And it was an accident" "I know, just recalling" she winked and made the way for the downtown.
Last year, before they started dating, she asked Calum to back the car out of the driveway, but he did it without looking in the mirrors, according to himself "who the fuck know the right side of pen drives?" and ran over her. Accidently, of course. For luck, she just broke a leg and he took care of her, and due it, they become closer. "You know, there're some bad things that happen for good reasons" "I thought we were done with this subject" he squeezed her right hand "if I haven't given all my attention to the damn pen drive and ran over you, maybe we'd not become closer as we did" "yeah... fine, I will let you drive" she parked the car left the driver's seat "move on, Cal!" he stood up and gave her a deep and quick kiss before sat down in the driver seat and squeeze the beige leather steering wheel "I love you" "love you too, but now I'm fucking dying to know where we're going" "you were driving and I have to know?!" "yes, Mr. driver" she teased, he giggled "fine. Know a place" "good".
They were on a road that she didn't recognize "Calum" "my name" he loved when she said his name "where are we going?" "It's a surprise" "oh no. Please, don't do this to me" "sorry, babe. I didn't make the rules" "which rules?" they laughed together "okay" she turned on the radio and tried to connect with some decent station "fuck" "you know you can use your pen drive, right?" she had taken the pen drive off the car "not with you in the wheel" you know, just for caution. he rolled his eyes and she finally connected with some Latin radio station
'Once de la noche y todavía no contesta'
'Un de la mañana y todavía no hay respuesta'
"Oh, no! No way!" "What?" "I am not bilingual like you" "and...?" "Not listening to something I do not understand" "so are you graduated in Korean now?" "No..."
'Cómo hacerte entender...'
he swallowed dryly a little "don't know what are you talking about" "no? What about that time you got drunk and sang out loud BTS's songs, huh?" "Only the English parts! Now just change it" "but it's Maluma!" he looked at her without blinking and pouted "fine" he smiled like a kid
'... eres muy bonita pa' llorar por el...'
She changed the radio station once more and found a random one
'Day to night to morning, keep with me in the moment
I’d let you had I known it, why don’t you say so?'
"You got to be kidding me" she giggled "I hate this song!" "I know" she kept laughing
'You got to keep me focused, you want it? Say so'
"Just turned it off" "oh, but I like it" Calum turned off the radio "no songs for you" "hey, that's my car! Spent lots of money on it" "But I am driving" "don't make me feel more regret than I already am" he laughed and leaned quickly to kiss her cheek "hey, Cal" "hum?" "I am bored" "you're acting like a fucking kid" "no. I am a fucking kid" "well, it's not a long ride. We'll be there soon" "where is 'there'?" "Nice try, nice try" she pouted and laid her head on the window so she could stargaze and think about how lucky she is to had been run over by the man driving at her side. She was so so in love with him.
Flashback:
Some friends had texted her. Bon Jovi was going to be in town and they have two tickets more. They gave it to her of course expecting she'd invite that guy she hanged out a few times, definitely her new crush. Calum. Such a beautiful name 'thanks Roy' he had introduced them. For some miracle, she got the guts to invite him.
[4:28pm]
'Be here at 6pm'
[5:17pm]
'Your place is so far from where I am now'
'You can drive my car'
'will be there in 40 minutes'
She grinned, shook her head lightly and blocked her phone to finish her makeup 'he will never desire me' she thought even knowing she will try to impress him anyways. Was 5:55pm when he arrived "I have exactly 2 minutes in advantage" "you made it, next time I will let you have a rest" "thanks" he pecked her cheek out of breath "are you ok?" "Yes, you are just breathtaking" he laughed "oh, I am not" "yes, you're. Always" she blushed "thanks" "you're welcome. Can I have a glass of water? The bus stop is far from here, you know?" "Yeah, sure come in". She gave him a glass of water and dropped on the sofa "thanks" "how can I refuse water for someone? Especially someone like you" he arched an eyebrown "someone like me?" "Yeah" "how is someone like me?" he dropped next to her "ridiculously healthy" "oh" he giggled "thanks. I really appreciate" "so, where were you?" "someone is interested in where I was" he teased, she rolled er eyes "you love annoy me, don't you?" "And you still have to ask? Anyhow, I was hanging with a friend" "'hanging with a friend' means banging with a girl?" "What?!" He started laughing "are you jealous or something?" "No..." She blushed "just trying to know you better" "so why are you blushing?" "I..." "Relax, I was with Luke. He is planning a trip to our home country with Ash and Mikey too. So we went out to lunch, but he lives far from here..." her body relaxed and she smiled "Australia is very nice" "is the best place in the world" "yeah, except the fact that is not Minnesota" he laughed "keep dreaming, kid" "I am two months older than you" "whatever, ms. jealousy" "'m not jealous!" "you looked so relieved when I said I was with Luke" "I didn't" "it's ok, I already admitted to myself that my love life is a joke anyways" "I bet it's not true" "trust me, it is" "thought you were the kind of guy that spent the night in 3 parties and in this 3 parties, hook up with at least 2 girls. At the same time" he laughed out loud "oh, honey, I used to be that guy, and now I am feeling very proud of myself" she giggled "why you are not that guy anymore?" He cleaned his throat "well, I met this lady, some months ago, and now all I do is think on her. I made out with someone a few days ago and couldn't finish the job, because was thinking on her" 'wow that hurted' "wow... You should be with this girl right now, not with me" he looked at her, 'unfreakingbelievable' "I literally made an hour and a half trajectory in 40 minutes to go in a concert just to be in your company cause' honestly I am not going to this concert because I want to see old Jon Bon Jovi sing 'bed of roses' and take ladies to Heaven..." she giggled "why do you think I did that?" "'Cause you're an idiot" he grinned "you are right, I should be with the my romantic interest" she frowned a little and they just stayed looking inside each other's eyes for a minute "I-I think we should go" it felt like he raped her with his gaze "are you ok?" "I dunno" "alright, tell me if you will need an ambulance" "okay" "so, where is that bad boy keys?" she chuckled "here" she gave to Calum the key "please, be careful" "my middle name is safety" "really? I thought was Tomas" "details, details". They were on the driveway ready to go when she saw Ginger, her cat, with the paw stuck in the water drainage grid "oh! wait a minute" she left the car "what's wrong?" "My cat. you can back the car while I help Ginger?" "no problem. Am I allowed to listen some music, too?" "Sure. The pen drive is in the glove compartment" "'kay". she ran to Ginger to help her little baby "my God, love, I am here" Calum grabbed the pen drive in the glove compartment and started back the car slowly without looking in the mirrors "well, it's done, Ginger. You are free now" she freed her cat that ran back to the roof. Calum was fighting with the pen drive's USB entrance "why I never put that shit on the right side?" and he forgot that he was backing the car. She turned to went back to the car or they would be late and all she could see was the car's trunk colliding with her hip. When he stopped the
car she was already on the floor. She definitely needed that ambulance now.
He took her to the hospital and then back to her place. He locked the front door and she dropped onto the sofa, now with a broken leg "that was the last time you drove my car" "you're sure?" he joined her on the sofa "you will need someone to help you during the next two weeks" "I have other friends..." "So we are still friends?" "Yes" "I am sorry for ran over you" "yeah, be mad with you will not change what happened" "it's because of this that I will be the one who will take care of you. Remember? My middle name is carefulness" "Wasn't safety?" "Is a long full name, see? Calum Safety-Careful Tomas Hood" "hum, I don't think so" they laughed "sorry, again" "stop apologizing and start looking for a driver costume" "I will not do that" "why not? Would be so sexy" she bit her bottom lip "you think?" "You are already sexy so..." "I'm" they laughed "okay, you don't need a costume, but I will need help in the shower, instead" "I will love to help you with the shower" "I was thinking in call Roy" "call Roy?!" he looked a little angry "you should see your face. And I am the jealous one here" "well, I just maybe, just very very maybe am into you" she smiled and blushed a little "I am into you too" "you are saying that only because do not get turned on by Jon Bon Jovi tonight" she laughed "And you are saying this only because you ran over my leg" he turned his grin to a line "No. I really mean it" "me too" she bit her bottom lip and he smiled again "but… unfortunately, you are not literally into me" "not for too long" soon the distance between them became minimum and in a blink of eye, they kissed. They kissed like already did that for years, like their lips met each other already before, even being the first time. Calum laid her back on the sofa and things started to get hotter, soon her Bon Jovi's tank top flew across the living room. She broke the kiss "what are you doing?" "I am trying to make up, because of the concert. Do you mind?" she smiled "you really know how to fix up the things" and they kissed again, now his black tee was off and...
*
"Honey, 're you alright?" Calum took her off the flashback "oh, yes. Was thinking in the first time we fucked" he laughed "so delicate" "sorry, the first time we 'made love'" "uh, that was bad" she laughed "thanks for ran over me, by the way" "only you for thanks the idiot that ran over you" "well, you are an idiot, but you are my idiot" "possessive" but he was hers and he loved that "oh, shut up" he laughed "so, was thinking in the week after your leg was better, huh?" "That wasn't the first time we fucked" "It was" "no, we fucked after you took me home in the night it happened" "no, no. I fucked you that night and I thought we had fucked, but three weeks later I discovered that I was wrong" "I am not..." "The way you move, babe, when you were with the broken leg wasn't sex with you, was sex for you" she laughed "It should be a compliment?" "Yes. And a good one" "well, in that case, thank you very much" she directed her gaze back to the sky and he looked at her, he was so in love
*
About 30 minutes later, Calum was taking the exit on the road to Santa Monica, she had read that in a sign. "Santa Monica!" "yup" "the pier?" "Yes" "oh, you know I love a pier, is…" "…so romantic" she laughed at him pretending to be her "but, we are not here specifically because of the pier" "so why?" "You will see" "please, stop. It's killing me" "oh, you're such a drama queen" he parked the car and turned off the engine "let's go". He tugged her to the amusement park "that's so exciting! what are we gonna do?" "fucking kid" she giggled "we'll play hockey" "what?!" he guided her to the Playland Arcade "that's..." she was confused that couldn't even talk "there's a lot..." "air hockey tables? yes" "but..." "Look, I know that do not have ice and is not real hockey, but I thought you'd enjoy" he rubbed the side of his neck "hockey remembers you home, right?" she had some water on her eyes and a true smile "I would like everything since it came from you" he smiled and flipped the disk "so, let's see if the Milwaukee girl still in flames" "you definitely know nothing about Winsconsin"
*
She won, of course "Badgers rocked your ass Aussie boy!" as she said, and they decided to rest on the pier, her head on his shoulder and his arm around her body "that was lovely" "me losing or your very kind comment about it?" she giggled "no. You remembered the air hockey here and tried to diminish my homesickness" "I understand how bad it is" "thank you" "no, thank you" "for what?" "To be with me, to love me, I was taking the wrong way before met you, you know?" "Well, shout out to Roy" "shout out to Roy" he repeated and they laughed "I was thinking in buy a ticket for you. To go home for a few days..." she looked into his eyes "what do you think?" "don't" she said smoothly "you sure? I have been saving money to paying the first tax to a car mortgage, but it can wait..." "No, Cal. Buy your car" "but you miss home" "yes, I miss it, but..." she cupped his face "I have you here and I realized... my home is you" he smiled and dipped to kiss her. She rested her head back on his shoulder and watched the moonlight reflecting in the ocean "and you are mine" he whispered against her hair. she smiled and enjoyed his company, she was so in love with him and he was so in love with her.
Rule #2: Always offer comfort and support
Y/N ~
Spencer and I finally moved in together about a month after the last incident. And he was right, it was more efficient.
“We gotta go, we gotta go, we gotta go!” I waited by our front door and Spencer ran around the apartment looking for his keys.
“I know I put them in the bowl”
“Spencer! I have keys, it's fine, let's go, lover boy!” He laughed and checked the ceramic bowl on the counter one last time before giving up.
“Okay, one last check. Coffee?”
“Check” I held up the two large cups in my hands.
“Go bags, check” he held up both of our bags on his shoulders.
“And keys, ½ so, good enough”
We arrived at the tarmac fifteen minutes earlier than usual...but still 10 minutes late.
Spencer~
I took both of our bags and stashed them in the jet with the others before taking my seat beside Y/N on the couch. As per usual the first teasing began from Morgan when I sat down and he saw that my shirt was buttoned wrong and my hair was noticeably more disheveled than usual.
“Oooh, looks like a lover boy had a very good morning!” I glared at him as I rebuttoned my shirt and JJ immediately took action.
“Morgan, don’t make me put you in time out” He put his hands up in a mock defense.
“Im sorry mom!” Rossi laughed before handing me my paper file and Y/N her I-pad.
“Milwaukee again, they've got a child murderer.” The once light mood from the teasing had gone away in an instant as we all opened up our files to see the pictures.
“That's an annihilator” My first thought was to take Y/N's hand, offering a little support for her and comfort for myself through a small touch. She took my hand gladly and gave it a little squeeze.
“An overly sadistic one too” Morgans brow furrowed as we continued to review the case but with perfect timing Garcia's face popped up on the screen.
“I have a present for you” We all looked at her with puzzled expressions through the screen.
“Look under your seats!” she began with her best impression of a talk show host and we all fumbled about to find bedazzled gun holsters for each of us with all of our names in special large gems of our favorite colors.
“Wow, thanks Garcia that's- that’s really thoughtful of you!” Emily tried and failed to contain her laughter as we all looked over to see Hotch replacing his leather belt holster with the bedazzled one from Garcia. He stood up to show her and got close to the camera.
“I’d say I look pretty badass.” He said it with a deadpan look on his face and then put his gun in it and sat back down without saying another word. JJ and Y/N looked at each other for a split second before bursting out in uncontrollable laughter. Like always, if one person on the team laughs, the rest of us can't help but join in. I always like to say it's because of Y/N. Her laugh is just one of those laughs that radiates all over and lights up a room.
Once we could breathe again we all thanked Garcia and she hung up with a big smile on her face. Now on to Milwaukee.
Y/N~
When we landed Hotch sent Spencer and I to the first crime scene together. Whenever possible on hard cases he likes to keep the two of us together because we work better that way. There is just something about the little touches during a hard case that keeps me going. And for this one, I was definitely going to need that.
“Poor JJ” As we walked around the crime scene looking at all of the damage done Spencer and I talked through whatever came to mind.
“What do you mean?” I love him so much. But he's absolutely clueless.
“I mean, her and Hotch both. I can't imagine doing cases like this when you have a kid of your own back home. It must be terrifying” he nodded in silence before crouching down in the corner of the little boys room.
“Do you ever consider it?” I continued talking to him even though I know we are here to work. Sometimes that's my biggest flaw. I don't shut up easily.
“Consider what?”
“You know. Having baby geniuses one day?” I gave him a curious little smile as I waited for his response and continued writing little notes about the crime scene in my phone.
“Well i mean yeah, of course. But I'm not the one who'd be carrying them for 9 months am I?” I laughed at him and nodded before stopping altogether.
“Them?” He gave me a mischievous smile back and said nothing.
“Fine then, keep your secrets”
We finished up at the crime scene and then headed back to the police station where the rest of the team was waiting for our report. Hotch and JJ look notably defeated and Rossi, Emily, and Derek just looked downright exhausted. Sometimes our work takes its toll rather quickly, especially when it's a very emotional case. Seeing a parent sob so horrifically after you give them the news is never easy. It's draining.
“So, what was the scene like?” Rossi spoke up from where he was standing in the corner.
“It was carnage. Absolute carnage”
“How are the parents?” I looked at JJ who out of all of us definitely looked the most defeated.
“They’re acting like anyone else would. They’re distraught.” I grabbed Spencer's arm and held it tight as we talked about the profile. The more we talked the worse everyone looked. Garcia called mid profile and even her voice sounded exhausted. But we all knew that we wouldn't rest until we caught him.
Spencer~
None of us slept that night. None of us even left the precinct that night. A few times while we waited for more information or for someone to come in for an interview we would take turns napping on two chairs we wedged together to form a bed in the conference room. I tried that once, but I could barely fit my torso in them so I decided I would have better luck with the floor instead.
“Spence, you want a snack?”
“They got pretzels?” I looked up from my napping position on the floor to look at Y/N when she stood over me with a few quarters in her hand.
“Yeah, i'll be right back” She walked away for a moment and came back with two cups of coffee and two bags of pretzels.
She plopped both of them on my chest and crumbled to the floor beside me.
“Dinner is served” I chuckled and took a swig of coffee- overly sugared just how I like it- and then ate a single pretzel before Morgan came running into the room.
“A boy was just kidnapped”
In a panic we all rushed up from our various positions and walked out into the main room of the precinct. I went straight for Hotch who was on the phone talking angrily.
“They put out an amber?” he blocked one end of the phone before turning to me.
“Not yet, get JJ on that please” I nodded and started to walk over to where JJ was napping.
“And Reid, get Y/N to talk to the parents, JJ’s done enough” I nodded solemnly.
We all have to do parent notifications and walkthroughs sometimes, but JJ does them the most. Every once in a while we make someone other than her do it to give her a well deserved break. Out of all of the things that we do, notifying the families is one of the hardest.
“JJ, another boy has been taken, Hotch needs you to put out the amber.” I shook her shoulder and she woke quickly.
“Me? I should be with the family, have Garcia do it.” I looked her straight in the eyes and shook my head.
“We got this one, you deserve a break” she said nothing but got up from her chairs and walked over to the computer to start on the alert.
“Y/N, baby, Hotch wants you with the families” she was still sitting on the floor where our coffees sat mostly untouched.
“Oh, um, okay, let's go then” I put a hand on her thigh.
“He wants me here. Will you be okay alone?”
“Oh. yeah, i'll be fine i have the keys anyways” She looked uneasy but neither of us had any choice in the matter. I gave her a chaste kiss on the top of her head and she grabbed my hand for just a second.
“You okay?”
“Yeah, yeah, i’ll be okay”
I subconsciously noticed the way she indirectly answered my question. It was her way of saying, no i’m not okay, but go do what you do. I kissed her hand in mine and walked out of the room going to help Derek and Hotch deliver the profile while the rest of the team was dispatched to separate locations. It's going to be a long night.
Y/N~
By the time I arrived at the families house it was nearing morning and the sun was starting to rise. There were cops all around and in their house which I quickly told to go. Right now, being here is not going to do that boy any good. Only one stayed to guard outside of the house, and me, of course, being the current family liaison. One of the problems with being the liaison with the family of an abductee is that after you make the initial connection with them, you don't get to stop being their liaison until the unsub is caught. That meant hours of being by myself in their house hearing the mother and father cry over the loss of their child. That meant almost never sleeping, or eating. And worst of all, that meant being without Spencers comforting touch and encouragement.
“Hi, I’m Agent Y/L/N, I'm the FBI agent assigned to your family.” They were sitting on the couch in the living room, their son’s toys covering the coffee table in front of them. The mother was crying soundlessly, almost catatonic, the father on the other hand was silent. He bounced his knee relentlessly and had no tears on his face.
“Would you mind if I ask you a few questions about Danny?”
The mother stayed quiet but the father looked up from his hands to speak.
“Do you think my son’s dead?”
Danny's mother withdrew her hand from her husbands and covered her mouth as she let out a sob.
“At this point we don't know much. But, i’m not here to lie to you, if this is connected to the other abductions then more than likely, yes”
The father still didn't cry, but instead just nodded his head solemnly.
I asked them all the questions I could. Where did Danny go to school? Is there anyone he liked to hang out with? Do you know anyone who would want to hurt Danny? Some of them were real questions that needed answers. But for the most part they were just to get a sense of the parents, and to make them feel a little less helpless. Spencer always says to me that the best thing you can do for these families sometimes is just to make them feel like they can help. Usually they cant, but sometimes taking their mind off of their own thoughts and focusing them can bring out little bits of information we never knew would be helpful. The morning came and went. I had a single orange and a cup of coffee that day. The night came and still, no news. I checked my phone constantly, even though I knew that my ringer was on. If they found Danny, alive or dead, I would be the first person they call. But until then, all I could do was wait.
Spencer~
Throughout the entire day I felt worried and distracted. Not just because I knew that the inevitable was close, but because usually, the team works in pairs. I deny it all the time, but I always work better when there is someone else with me. Not necessarily working with me- because I prefer to work alone- but just there. Someone who will remind me to slow down and take a deep breath or just let me talk out loud to them even though I probably won't listen to a word they say. But here I was, standing in front of a map, all alone, getting more and more frustrated by the moment and having not a single one of my teammates to get me back on track.
“Hello?” I finally took out my phone and called Y/N to get an update. On her that is, not the case.
“Hey, it's me, i'm just calling to see how you're doing” she sighed and I could practically see her rubbing a hand on the back of her neck and adjusting her glasses like she always does when she's stressed.
“That bad huh?”
“Yeah, not great. How's the map coming”
“It's not” this time it was my turn to sign into the phone.
“The the rest of the team is all out doing recon so i'm at a bit of a loss here”
“Oh, I'm sorry. Look Spence, I really shouldn't be on the phone, so-”
“Oh yeah, no I get it, of course.” She hung up without a word of goodbye and let me feel somehow even more frustrated than when our conversation began. I know she didn't mean to be condescending. I know she's just as frustrated as I am. But that doesn’t help me at the moment. After about another hour of waiting the rest of the team (minus Y/N) walked back into the precinct with downtrodden faces.
“We just found the body, kid” Morgan walked over to me and then sat down in a chair at the conference table. My heart broke. For once I was glad I wasn't with them today.
“Did you get a positive ID?” I turned to Rossi this time who stood next me looking at the map.
“Yeah. it's him”
Y/N~
I sat wide awake on the couch as it neared midnight. My phone lit up in the dark room with a call from Hotch.
“What's the news?”
“We just got a positive ID on Danny's body” I was silent.
“After you inform the parents I need you back at the precinct” I was shocked.
“Hotch, they still are going to need a liaison, my work isn't done yet”
“Y/N, their child is dead. There is nothing more that you can do for them”
“Fine, i'll be back as soon as I can” I hung up the phone angrily and gingerly knocked on the bedroom door, knowing that this moment would alter their lives forever.
I opened up the door to the conference room to find everyone sitting in chairs around the table. They all gave me sympathetic looks and Spencer tried to reach his arm out to me which I denied. I’m a profiler, I know what healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms look like. I know that pulling away from anyone and everyone is not a good coping mechanism, but none of them were there with me. None of them saw the look of terror on his mother's face when I knocked on her door in the middle of the night. None of them heard her screams or saw her crumple to the ground in her son's room, holding his pillow like it was all that was keeping her anchored.
I sat down on a chair in the corner of the room as we went through the profile and barely said a word. I saw Spencer looking back at me worried a few times while we gave the profile to the police and again as I went back into the corner of the conference room, still pulling away when he tried to grab my arm. Once everyone had gone back to researching or calling or going door to door, Spencer walked over to my chair in the corner. He put his hands on the arms of the chair and squatted down directly in front of me. Still being careful not to touch me, he tried to look me in the eyes but I averted them.
“Y/N, you should go to the hotel”
“Are you going to the hotel?”
“No but-”
“Don't tell me that I need it more than you. Or that I've had a harder time than you! We are all struggling, we all need sleep! I can handle this Spencer!” He flinched a little when I started to raise my voice but still stayed in his position. Hotch and Rossi upon hearing me raise my voice walked back into the room and over to Spencer.
“Y/N, Spencer's right, you need to get some sleep.”
“Is that an order?” Hotch paused for a moment and looked at Rossi who nodded.
“Yes, i'll see you in the morning” I clenched my jaw and Spencer quickly moved out of the way to let me get out of the chair, but not before taking a firm hold of my arm.
“This is a good thing, don't be mad at us for trying to help you” I took my eyes off of the floor to glare at him.
“Spencer, if you value our relationship or your hand, let go of my arm and stop with your condescending bullshit”
Spencer~
After she left I think it's fair to say that my mood did not improve. My frustration about the case turned into overall frustration with myself and everyone who happened to be around me at the time. I stood in front of the map without moving for hours just looking and going through all different theories in my mind. I was no longer alone but at this point that didn't matter.
“Hey Spence, do you want any coffee?” JJ approached me cautiously and I silently shook my head.
“Okay, well, uh, let me know if you need anything” she walked away to the hall just outside of the conference room where Morgan and Emily were standing. I could hear Emily talk to her through the glass doors that separated us.
“So?” Emily probed JJ as soon as the doors closed behind her.
“No good, didn't even speak”
“I'm worried about him'' There was a hum of agreement between the three of them before Emily opened the doors and walked in. she approached me with less caution than JJ, but still with a little apprehension.
“Hey there, Spencer, do you need any help?” i didn't speak a word or even shake my head this time.
“You know I'm pretty good at mapping it so it happens. I could also help with a key if you want? Or alternatively you could just talk to me? Or look at me? No? Okay, well i'm going go get myself a cup of coffee from the diner down the street, if you decide to speak let me know”
She asked me question after question and still I didn’t speak or move. Finally after staying for a moment of hostile silence she walked out of the room to where JJ and Derek were waiting.
“So?” This time JJ asked Emily
“I asked him like five questions and he didn't even try and correct my grammar.”
They all paused in silence for a moment before Emily turned to Derek.
“Alright Morgan, your turn, good luck” she patted him on the back and he sighed before walking into the room even more hesitantly than JJ was the first time.
“Hey Reid, you know, we’re all here for you if you-”
I turned around very slowly with a deadpan stare.
“Morgan, as politely as I can say this, if you and the rest of the team don’t leave me the fuck alone then I am going to take all 187 points of my IQ and shove them, up your-”
“Woah, woah,woah, okay pretty boy, I get the message”
He turned and walked briskly out of the room. I turned back to my board but could hear JJ talking still from the hall.
“I'm worried, I've never seen him like this.”
“The only times he's ever been this frustrated we all know who got him out of it.” Emily stated and turned to Derek.
“I’ll see what I can do. Hey Rossi, let's take a drive”
Y/N~
I had slept for a few hours but the nightmares woke me up. It was morning now, so at least I know I got a little bit of sleep. I took a shower, got dressed, and sat on the edge of my bed, not quite ready to face the repercussions of what happened last night. I put my head in my hands as I remembered last nights events. I fucked up. Bad. After a few minutes I heard a knock on my hotel room door and got up from the bed to answer it. Rossi and Derek stood there with hands on their hips and worried looks on their faces.
“Can we come in?”
“Um, sure?” He said it as they had already walked in the room and I went back to sitting on the edge of my bed as they stood in front of me. Derek was the first to break the silence and he tore me away from where I was looking as I fiddled with my hands.
“Look, Pretty boy is in a bad place and you're the only one we know can get him out of it. If we want to catch this guy we need him, and to get him back on track we need you” he stopped and sighed.
“Well, I have been ordered to stay here, so I guess you'll have to talk to our supervisor about that” Rossi grimaced as I said it and pointed to him. He put his head down for a second and then took a seat on the bed next to me.
“Look kid, you were in a horrible place and I know that you know that. If you want to stop feeling helpless, If you want to get that boy the justice that he deserves, then we need your help. Spencer needs your help. You are the only person in the world that could help him right now, so I need you to suck up your pride, and come with us.”
I gulped and sighed before standing from the bed.
“Fine. But you both owe me a drink” They laughed and opened the door for me as we left the hotel.
When the three of us arrived at the precinct and walked into the main area by the vending machines we saw a group of officers crowding around the hallway to the conference room. I walked right up to JJ and Emily who were making their way through the crowd towards me. JJ was the first to speak over the low murmur of the people crowding the hallway.
“Hey, thank god you're here!” She sounded so relieved you would have thought I’d saved her life.
“Um thanks? What's going on?” After I spoke I heard a loud thud and a crash coming from inside the conference room and a few people backed up from the windows. Emily got really close to me as she spoke.
“Um, Spencer’s...throwing things” I cocked my head to the side and was about to ask what she meant when another object, a book i think, hit the window in front of me.
“Holy, shit” I said with conviction and without another word walked to the front of the crowd and opened the glass doors.
Spencer was facing away from me, but still throwing markers, and wherever he could get his hands on, at the window. Finally as he heard me approaching he stopped throwing things and put both of his palms to his forehead. As I got closer I could hear his heavy breathing and see the damage he had done. When I finally got close enough to his back I put one hand on his shoulder and the other on his arm gently. He flinched a little but didn't move away or try to get me off of him. I got on my tiptoes to whisper quietly into his ear.
“Spence, I love you and I'm sorry, but I need you to calm down right now because the team needs you. okay?” I kept my hands on him and heard him gulp in between his heavy breaths. After a minute his breathing started to slow a little.
“Good. I'm going to go get you a glass of water and i’ll be back in just a second” I took my hands off him and walked over to the door where JJ and Rossi were standing guard.
“JJ could you get me a glass of water?”
“Of course”
“Rossi, can you make everyone get away from the hallway and the window, there's too many people, I wont be able to get him to calm down if his senses are in a constant overdrive from the sounds” He nodded quickly as JJ came back with a glass of water in her hand. I took it from her and walked back into the room with Spencer as Rossi-with help from Hotch- started to disperse the crowd.
“Here, drink this” I guided him to a chair and he sat down to drink the glass. After a few sips I put my hand on his back and leaned forward so he could see my face fully.
“Okay, now I need you to tell me everything you know”
Spencer~
After a few minutes of drinking water I began to tell her about everything I knew for the location. At some point while we were talking I figured out where the unsub was and Morgan and Emily successfully got him and saved another young boy. As soon as he was processed we all decided that we wanted to leave as soon as possible, and not stay another second in that place. Even though it was the middle of the night Rossi was able to get the jet ready for us in an hour and we started the long flight home.
I looked In front of me on the couch where Y/N was snuggled into my side and rolled onto my back so she could place her head on my chest. Her eyes were closed but her breathing told me that she was still awake and while she was I wanted to make sure she heard one last thing before this treacherous trip was over.
“I never said thank you” She turned her head on my chest so that she could look at me, but in the dark and quiet of the jet, it was clear she couldn't really see me anyways.
“For what?”
“For what you did back there, I never said thank you, so… thank you” She smiled widely at me but kept her eyes closed in the dark.
“Well, thank you. For not making me feel like I was helpless” she opened her eyes when she said it and it made me smile broadly. I kissed her head and turned back on my side so that I could pull her close to me.
Rule #2, every little touch, every little word that she says brings me comfort whether she knows it, or not. I think that might have been the easiest rule to follow, after all, when you love someone just being around them is enough comfort.
One Night in Milwaukee
David/Patrick, 4700 words, A03
A little angsty-with-a-happy-ending, h/c one-shot. Happy Friday!
Summary: Being stuck in the Milwaukee airport is bad enough. Then David realizes that the man who broke his heart is sitting right next to him.
*****
The announcement at the gate is almost impossible to understand, but David gets the gist anyway. His flight to Toronto is cancelled, and no further flights will be leaving until at least tomorrow morning.
He immediately starts searching on his phone for a nearby hotel, wishing he had bitten the bullet and done so hours ago. It’s nearly midnight and he’s exhausted, having spent the best part of six hours in the Milwaukee airport as his connecting flight got delayed again and again. He’s just about to reserve a room when a nearby airline employee is accosted by an impatient couple. David stands up and drifts close enough to listen in – at least her words are clearer than those coming over the PA system.
Apparently due to the blizzard many roads are impassable, and passengers are being encouraged not to leave the airport. Even if they make it to a hotel, the airline employee explains, they will almost certainly have trouble returning in the morning. She encourages the couple to stay at the airport overnight if getting out on a flight tomorrow morning is their goal.
David sighs, grabs his bag, and makes his way over to the long line of passengers hoping to rebook their flights for the next day. He’s reached that state of tiredness when he can’t even focus on things around him. He doesn’t even bother scrolling through his phone, he just tunes out and shuffles forward until his turn comes.
It’s not as if it even matters if he gets to Toronto tonight, or tomorrow. There’s no one waiting at home for him, no one who will care if when he gets home. It’s been more than three years since he’s had anyone like that. Three years since he lost the best thing that ever happened to him.
David’s done the best he can to keep busy, now that the initial period of paralyzing depression is in his rear view. He works out, and keeps up with current events, and stays out of bars. He lives in Toronto, someplace familiar enough to be comfortable, yet completely bare of memories of Patrick.
For the past few weeks he’s been hanging out with Alexis at her condo in Brooklyn. She had decided to throw a party for American Thanksgiving, which David thought was actually in poor taste but somehow didn’t manage to convey to Alexis until the day before. In the end they cooked a bunch of food and donated it to a homeless shelter so he figures they did okay. It had been good to spend time with his sister, but she is busy with her job and her friends and eventually David had to head back home, which brought him to this endless stopover in Milwaukee.
David tries his best to be civil as he is tentatively booked onto an 8:35 a.m. flight the next morning.
“Thanks for flying with us,” the perky gate attendant says as she hands him his new ticket. “Please make your way to the lobby. This area will be closing soon.”
David blinks at her, confused. “Excuse me?”
“Please make your way to the lobby, sir. Passengers can’t remain by the gates overnight.”
David shakes his head and steps away as the next impatient customer pushes forward, and the woman’s instruction soon becomes clear. Everyone at the gates is being herded away, back out past security and to the much smaller lobby area. So not only does he have to spend the night in the Milwaukee airport, he’s got to fight for a chair again. Fantastic.
Miraculously David manages to find an empty spot at the end of a row, near a chilly expanse of glass with a view of the storm outside. He flops down with his bag next to him and stares for a while, not able to see much except swirling flakes illuminated by the flood lights on the tarmac.
After a while David drapes his leather jacket over his head to block out the evil florescent overheads and leans back, trying to doze off. He knows it’s going to be next to impossible to sleep like this, but he’s got nothing better to do. He vaguely notices someone approaching him, looking for a place to sit, and he tugs his bag off the empty seat next to him so the man can sit down. David may not be a nice person, but he’s not a complete asshole.
A nice person. Once upon a time, there was someone nice who cared about David, and who David cared about more than he ever thought possible. It was like something out of a fairy tale, right up until the end. David’s still not sure what happened, but the outcome was clear enough – Patrick was tired of him, and so that was that. No fiancé, no wedding, no happy ending in Schitt’s Creek. Rosebud Motel Group bought out Patrick’s share of Rose Apothecary, and David moved the store closer to Toronto, where it slowly became just a source for toiletries for the motel chain. Eventually the physical location closed, and David’s role dwindled to almost nothing.
It’s been more than three years, but his heart still aches when he thinks about Patrick. He can still hear his voice in his head, giving him shit or whispering sweet nothings in his ear.
Bizarrely, it’s at that very moment when he hears Patrick’s voice again, and it’s most decidedly not in his head.
“Thanks, that would be great.”
David sits up, his jacket sliding on to his lap, and his jaw drops. Sitting right next to him, taking an orange polyester blanket from an airline employee, is Patrick. He’s got a hoodie pulled up on his head over a ball cap, but it’s obviously him.
“Oh my god,” David breathes out, feeling his stomach fall. This can’t be happening.
“David?” Patrick turns to him. “Oh. Wow. What are the odds?”
“What – what are you doing here?”
Patrick is in the Milwaukee airport, backpack on the floor by his legs. It’s no mystery what he’s doing here. But David’s brain refuses to process this.
“My flight was cancelled.” Patrick fidgets with his hat, not really looking at David.
“But why are you sitting here?”
Again, not a mystery. The whole lobby is packed. David needs to get a grip and stop asking stupid questions. But he’ll need to work himself up to something more on point. He still can’t get over the fact that Patrick Brewer is sitting next to him.
“Um, right. I’m sorry.” Patrick leans forward to grab his bag. “I’ll, um, go somewhere else.”
Patrick stands up, and a nearby man spots him, vulture-like and poised to take his chair if he moves away. There’s not another free seat in sight.
“No,” David chokes out. “No, stay. It’s all right.”
“Yeah?” Patrick glances quickly at David and then away again, his shoulders practically up by his ears. “Okay. Thanks.”
David focuses on his breathing and presses his face into his hands, hoping Patrick doesn’t notice how close he is to freaking out. It’s unlikely, but you never know. If he does notice, at least he probably won’t call him out on it.
“I’m sorry, David. I didn’t mean to upset you.”
Or maybe he will.
“I’m fine.”
“I really can leave, there’s a spot against the wall over there-”
“Patrick, for fuck’s sake, it’s fine. I’m fine.”
“Can I get you something? I’ve got some water…”
Unbelievable. “I’m sorry, you can sit here, but if you think there’s anything you can do to make this better, you’re out of your mind.” David can hear how shrill he is, but he can’t help it.
“Whatever. It’s not as if I ever knew how to fix us in the first place.”
“It’s not like you tried.”
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” Patrick says, nearly shouting.
“Um, excuse me, but some people are trying to sleep, man,” a kid in a beanie sitting across the aisle from them interjects. “You should try it.”
“Eat dirt,” David hisses, and Patrick, that bastard, laughs.
“What?”
“You’re a riot, David. Sue me.”
David huffs and twists his body away. He’s not sure how to do this, have an ordinary conversation with Patrick in an airport. All the anger and hurt he thought he had handled is suddenly back, as painful as ever.
A few minutes later there’s a crinkling sound. “Want some?”
Patrick is holding a piece of red licorice in front of his face.
David blinks, disbelieving. Patrick wiggles the licorice. “Fine.” David accepts it and takes a bite, hoping he’s chewing in a sufficiently dignified way.
“Did you have a nice visit with Alexis?”
David frowns. “How do you know I was visiting Alexis?” Alexis had closed ranks against Patrick when it all went down. David had thought it appropriate at the time, but something in Patrick’s voice tweaks a pang of regret.
“You smell like her.”
“Ew, what?”
“Her perfume.” Patrick shrugs. “I recognize it. Or maybe you’re dating someone who wears it, I don’t know.”
“I’m not.” As if. “Guess I spent too long on Alexis’ couch.” He brushes at the leather jacket on his lap, as if little bits of Alexis would be clinging to it.
“How is she?”
Again, that pang. “Good. She’s good. She’s happy in New York. She’s got friends – real friends. Not that she didn’t before, you know, back in-” David can hardly say it, but Patrick nods. “But now she’s got real friends in New York, so.”
“I’m glad to hear it,” Patrick says.
“What about you? How long have you been away? Work or pleasure?”
Something comes over Patrick’s face that David can’t describe. “Well, it definitely wasn’t pleasure.”
The conversation comes to an expectedly awkward end, both of them falling silent. There’s a group of people behind them who keep arguing over whether they should rent a car and drive to what seems to be a college reunion of some sort. David wishes they’d just go already.
“Want some more?” Patrick offers up another piece of licorice, and suddenly making nice isn’t working for David anymore.
“You can’t fix this with candy, Patrick. Bribes don’t make up for cheating.”
David can feel Patrick bristling next to him. “I didn’t cheat, David,” he hisses. “I told you, you just wouldn’t listen. If you want to keep believing it that’s on you, but I absolutely did not cheat. I would never do that to you.”
“You wanted to.”
“I did not!”
“Shhhh,” the woman on the other side of Patrick entreats. “We don’t care.”
David angrily bites off another piece of licorice. “You told me Mark was just a guy you met at the community center, and then all of a sudden he’s in the store when I’m not there.”
“We needed someone else to work on busy days when you had vendor visits – we agreed on that. I was training him!”
“You never told me. And when I came in-”
“He was just helping me put some boxes away.”
“I can’t believe we’re having this discussion again,” David says, tears welling in his eyes. He remembers the moment like it was yesterday, coming into the back room and finding Patrick with a tall, slim, dark-haired stranger, the man reaching up around Patrick, pressing him into the shelves.
“What do you mean again? We never had it in the first place. You came in, screamed at me, and left. You never let me explain.”
“What kind of explanation would you have given me? What could you possibly say? You’d been out every night that week with lame excuses, you kept finding reasons to avoid me, and then I find you with someone else.”
“David…” Patrick takes in a long, deep breath, and lets it out again. “David. I was out so much because I was planning your birthday party.”
David stares at him. “That’s impossible. Stevie would have told me. Or Alexis.”
“I didn’t tell Stevie, or anyone in Schitt’s Creek. I didn’t want them to give it away. Mark was actually helping me. His family has an orchard out near Elm Valley, with an outdoor pavilion that was really pretty nice. I was thinking about having it there so I drove over to see it after work. Unfortunately, the first time I went, it started raining, so I went back the next night. Mark said there was a spectacular sunset view, but I wanted to see it for myself.”
“That’s… that’s only two nights. What about the others?”
“It was only two nights, David. Maybe my excuses weren’t that great, but it was only two nights. The rest of them we spent together just like always.”
David lets himself really look at Patrick, who is looking right back at him. He seems, possibly, just as hurt and miserable as David feels. Maybe more.
“It seemed like more than two,” David says pathetically. “Why, um, why didn’t you tell me that sooner?”
“You blocked my number.”
It’s true. Not his most mature moment. “Oh.”
“I would have thought,” Patrick starts, and then shakes his head and presses his fingers to his mouth.
“What?”
“No, forget it. It’s history now, right?” Patrick tugs his ball cap down, shading his eyes.
“What were you going to say?”
Patrick wrings his hands together, then glances up at David and then back at his hands. “Just that, you know, in the context of everything we meant to each other, given that we were in love, and engaged, that you might have cut me a break and listened to me instead of jumping to such a ridiculous conclusion.”
“Ridiculous?” David scoffs, trying not to let Patrick’s all too valid words sink in. “Hardly. It’s no different than how every relationship I’ve been in has ended. I’m always left behind. Too much. I’m surprised we lasted as long as we did.”
“David.” Patrick grabs his hands, and David stiffens. “You were never too much for me. I’m not everyone else. And I didn’t leave you behind. You left me.”
David feels a rush of shame, and Patrick just squeezes his hands tighter. It’s not as if he’s never wondered if he hadn’t screwed up, leaving the way he did. He knows he probably did. It’s just that it’s striking him now how very likely it is that his misery has been almost entirely of his own making.
“Why are you telling me this?”
“Because you don’t deserve to believe that I would do that to you.”
David tugs his hands out of Patrick’s. “Well, I’m sure you’re better off now anyway.”
“Not even a little.” Patrick’s voice is soft and sad, and David can’t help meeting his eyes. What he sees is devastating. “Sure, I dated for a while, once I was able to get out of bed, but I gave it up after a few disasters. You spoiled me for anyone else.”
“I find that hard to believe.”
“Maybe it’s just that my heart was so thoroughly broken, no ordinary guy had a chance.” The silence stretches, and then Patrick says, his voice thready, “How about you?”
There’s a catch in his voice, but something in his tone makes David’s heart skip a beat. It’s an opening he never expected.
“I never met anyone else either. Didn’t even try.” David clears his throat and looks up, catching Patrick’s gaze. For all the fear he’s shown in the past, for all that his insecurities ruined them, David feels like he owes Patrick a moment of bravery. “There was no point, not when I’m still in love with you.”
Patrick stares at him, eyes wide, and then abruptly stands up. “Save my seat,” he says, and strides away, hands clenched in fists at his sides.
“Well, maybe now I get can some sleep,” the rude kid with the beanie grumbles, and David barely restrains himself from throwing something at him.
“We’re having a moment, here,” David says.
“Might go better if you fucking apologized,” the kid replies, pulling his orange airline blanket up over his head.
“He’s got a point.” The woman on the other side of Patrick’s seat gives David a pointed look that would put Ronnie Lee to shame. “Sounds like you really messed up.”
“Who are you, anyway?” David snaps.
“Audrey. Nice to meet you, David,” the woman sasses back, tossing her short black hair.
“Oh my god.” David stands up, arms wrapped tight around his body, and scans the lobby for Patrick. “He probably just went to the bathroom. I’m sure he’ll be back soon.”
“I hope for your sake you’re right,” Audrey replies. “But if you want to go look for him, I’ll keep an eye on your stuff. There’s no way I’m falling asleep in this place. Too noisy.”
David looks her up and down, and then decides he doesn’t care whether she steals his bag. There’s more at stake here than an aging laptop. “Thanks.”
He weaves his way through the seating area, stepping around families sleeping on the floor and people stretched out in every available space. He shudders to think about putting his face anywhere near the carpet and the plethora of germs that must live there. He’ll never be that tired.
There’s a food court around the corner, all the restaurants closed with metal gates drawn down. It’s darker here, and quiet. The scattered tables and chairs are mostly empty, the metal furniture not particularly conducive to sleeping.
Patrick’s standing in front of the Cinnabon.
“They open at 5,” he says, not looking at David. “Only four hours to go.”
“Good to know.” David moves closer, trying to see Patrick’s face, but between the dim lighting and the way Patrick keeps ducking his head, he can’t see much.
“Look, Patrick. I, um, I know it’s probably too late, but.” David leans his head back and blinks up at the ceiling. “I’m sorry. Truly sorry. I should have trusted you.”
Patrick shrugs. “Yeah. You should have.”
David sucks on his lip, not sure where to go from here. “Maybe we could talk about it?” This sounds like torture, but he doesn’t see too many other options, and they’re already in hell.
Patrick nods, and David tries to tell himself that this is a good sign. He spots a nearby open table and reaches to pull Patrick towards it, but he has barely grasped Patrick’s arm when he flinches and pulls away.
“Patrick?” David moves closer. Patrick’s eyes are squeezed together in pain.
“Patrick, wait, are you hurt? What’s wrong?” David’s hands flutter towards Patrick’s shoulders, afraid to cause further distress.
“No, sorry, I’m fine, it’s nothing,” Patrick turns away, but now David sees how stiffy he’s holding himself, how the puffiness in his face probably isn’t just due to airport overheating. All of David’s anger and hurt flow out of him, replaced by an urgent concern. Something isn’t right.
“Patrick,” David says, as calmly as he can. “Come sit down with me?”
Patrick glances at him and nods, and lets David lead them over to a table.
They sit next to each other, Patrick’s whole body radiating discomfort. David forces himself to wait, to breathe. To give Patrick a moment. “Sweetheart,” he says finally, the endearment purposeful and honest, “what happened?”
Patrick takes in a long breath and lets it out. “I was attacked.” He’s speaking softly but steadily, his gaze fixed straight ahead. “Three nights ago, coming out of a bar with my cousin Jamie. He’s only nineteen-” Patrick’s voice breaks and he sucks in air, then goes on. “He wasn’t hurt, thank god. He got away. But I-” Patrick huffs a bitter laugh. “I got a little banged up.”
Patrick turns towards David, sliding his hoodie off of his head and removing his hat. There’s a dark purple bruise on his temple, and a bandage running from the top right corner of his forehead back to his ear.
“Oh my god, Patrick,” David reaches for him, then stops himself. “Where – where else, I don’t want to hurt you-”
“Couple of broken ribs, bruises,” Patrick indicates his right side and upper arm. “Eight stitches my on head.”
“Come here, come here,” David can’t help himself, he walks his fingers onto Patrick’s shoulders and eases him in. Patrick sags into the embrace, his face nestling into that space against David’s neck that used to belong only to him. “I’m so sorry, Patrick, I’m so sorry.” David holds him gently, rubbing his back with careful strokes. He feels like his heart is going to burst. Patrick sniffles into David’s neck, trying not to cry, and David circles his arms around him. “I’ve got you,” David soothes. “You’re okay.”
David doesn’t ever want to let Patrick go, but after a minute or so Patrick starts to pull back, and David has no choice. He lets his fingers skim down Patrick’s arms as he straightens up.
“Thank you, David,” Patrick says into the awkward silence.
“Yeah, well. After screwing everything else up, seems like the least I can do.” David looks around and stands up, rubbing his hands on his thighs. “Shall we go back and make sure Audrey hasn’t stolen our bags?”
“Who’s Audrey?”
David can’t help but stay near Patrick as they make their way to their seats, his hand on the small of his back. Patrick lets him, leaning into his side, a hundred and eighty degree reversal from where they were an hour ago.
He can’t imagine what Patrick is feeling. Despite all the crap David has gone through in his life, he’s never been the victim of a what he assumes was a hate crime. And the fact that Patrick is traveling by himself… where was he when he got assaulted? Who was there for him?
You should have been there, David’s guilty mind supplies. If David hadn’t ruined their lives with his self-doubt, he would have been there for Patrick. For better or for worse. Of course, if they were still together, nothing like this would have happened to Patrick in the first place, because they would have been safe in Schitt’s Creek where they belonged.
They arrange themselves in their miraculously still empty seats, David pulling the orange blanket up over them both. He holds out his arm and Patrick leans into him, resting his head on his shoulder. Patrick’s seated to his right, so it’s his uninjured left side up against David.
The feel of Patrick’s body against his is so familiar and yet it’s been so long, it makes David want to cry. Instead he gently curls himself protectively around Patrick’s body and closes his eyes.
Patrick turns into him, his arm going around David’s waist and his face pressing against his neck. “Missed you,” he whispers into David’s skin.
“You too,” David sighs into Patrick’s hair. “So much, Patrick. So much.”
David dozes for a while and eventually falls asleep, waking only when the PA system starts making incomprehensible flight announcements. Patrick is already awake, leaning forward and digging around in his backpack.
David blinks blearily at him as he remembers the events of the night before. It seems like a dream, but Patrick is right there in front of him, solid and real. He glances up at the clock on the wall. Five-fifteen. “Wanna get a Cinnabon?” he asks, his voice scratchy. It’s not the best line he could have come up with, but he figures Patrick must be hungry too.
“No, sorry, they said my flight’s here. I have to go to the gate.”
David suddenly feels faint. “What – no – that’s impossible. The first flight to Toronto isn’t until eight something, they put me on the earliest one, that’s what they told me at the desk-”
“David.” Patrick’s eyes are heavy and sad. “I’m not going to Toronto.”
“But you said-” He didn’t say, David realizes. He just assumed they were both on their way back home.
“It happened in Toronto,” Patrick says, not needing to identify what “it” he’s referring to as he tugs the hood of his sweatshirt over his ball cap. “I decided I needed to get away for a while. Put some distance between me and all that.”
David’s heart is pounding hard in his chest. It’s a wonder Patrick can’t hear it. “Where are you going?”
“Florida. My parents bought a little house there, they use it in the winter but not until after Christmas, so it’s empty now.” Patrick sighs and hoists his backpack up, wincing. “It’s been really good to see you, David.”
Patrick gives David a sad little smile, and starts walking away.
There’s a moment when David actually imagines letting Patrick go, and he wants to slap himself silly.
“Patrick, wait.” He scrambles to grab his bag and jogs after him. “Let me come with you.”
Patrick looks puzzled as they join the line of bleary-eyed people waiting to take off their shoes and slide their belongings through the scanner. “Okay, but once you go through you won’t be able to get to the food court.”
“No, Patrick – I mean to Florida.”
“You hate Florida,” Patrick replies automatically.
“That is entirely besides the point.”
“You can’t come with me. You have a life, David.”
“Patrick, I don’t. Not one I want. Not without you.”
This gets Patrick’s attention, and he steps out of the line. “What are you talking about?
David moves towards him, his whole body trembling. “I am so, so sorry I messed things up between us. I know how badly I hurt you. I have changed, though, I’ve been in therapy for real, and I’ll do whatever it takes…” He sucks in a breath and races on before Patrick can interrupt. “I will regret it forever, what I did to you, and it’s probably unforgivable. But if – if you think it’s not, if you think maybe you could give me another chance, please, let me come with you.”
“David…”
“I won’t give up on us again. And I don’t… I don’t want to say goodbye. Not yet.” David can feel his throat tightening up. “Not if there’s any possibility… Let’s try. On whatever terms you want, for however long. Please.”
“Do you really think that’s a good idea?” But Patrick’s eyes are saying what his words aren’t, and David holds his gaze, hope building in his chest.
“I think it’s the only decent idea I’ve had in years.” David reaches out and twines his index finger around Patrick’s, a single point of contact holding them together. “I bet we can find someplace to go hiking in Florida. With lots of bugs, and, um, maybe alligators?”
Patrick’s eyes flicker down to their hands, and back up to David. “You’d face alligators for me?”
“Yes.”
“And bugs too?”
David feels his heart leap, and he struggles not to smile. “Yes. I will face a reasonable number of bugs for you.” He takes a deep breath. “It doesn’t have to mean we’re together, you don’t have to commit to anything-”
“What if I want to?”
David pulls Patrick’s hand up and presses it tight against his chest. “Then I’m not going to argue with you,” David says breathlessly.
“That would be a first,” Patrick says, and David chokes out a laugh.
“Shut up.”
“Make me.”
They crash together lips first, David’s arms going around Patrick’s shoulders and Patrick’s hands grabbing at David’s hips. David can’t get enough, and apparently neither can Patrick, mouths open and tongues tasting in a mad rush. It’s sloppy and ridiculous and David is going to remember it for the rest of his life. When they finally come up for air, they realize that everyone in the security line is cheering and clapping, and David rests his forehead against Patrick’s.
“They’re taking video, aren’t they,” David says.
“Hashtag ‘one night in Milwaukee,’” Audrey hoots at them as she takes off her boots and sets them in a plastic bin. “Glad you got your head out of your ass, David.”
“Me too,” says Patrick, herding David back towards the screening line. “Just promise me one thing.”
David searches Patrick’s face, but he’s smiling, and he can’t help a matching smile from stretching his own cheeks. “Anything.”
“Pretty sure our flight’s going to be packed. I get the window seat.”
