My baby vessels from wet to leather hard
I love how my first piece ended up just being a large soy sauce dish with the thiccest base ever
These were made back in January and have already been glazed and fired which I posted in another post :)
I am pretty proud with how even they came out. There are more that are being fired right now, but I was struggling SO bad centering the clay that they’re all a lil wonky but hey, done is better than perfect sometimes, right?

For the clay + project I used cloth and cardboard to dip into clay slips to create a variant of colored layers for my spices concept.
These are trial pieces and are waiting to dry to put into the Kiln to be fired.
This picture ↓↓↓↓ is the result after firing in the kiln has occurred.
The materials used have burnt out and the forms of the materials are what is left behind.
After Firing...
They were fired lower than 1000 degrees and as a result they are very delicate and easy to break. Some of the structure's have crumbled.
It will be interesting to return them into a higher firing for a second time over 1000 degrees as they should harden up.

i have a headcanon that nigella was not just an artist but a potter and u can pry it from my cold dead hands. Why does she have a ceramics collection. why is her house the masters of psycometry and understanding objects and their history. You know who use a weird form of divination? Potters tapping on a leatherhard pot while theyre trimming and somehow knowing exactly how thick the clay is. Also all of archeology related to pottery. You know what the 200 into 1 or whatever it is with teacher? aligning a bunch of souls into 1 body? its a stretch but that reminds me hella like the way i visualize the concept of clay molecules aligning and its importance to literally every aspect of pottery to make smthn without it breaking. also, gay. and potters have hella arm muscles thats good cav material right there.

🐸 climbing frog 🐸 wall-hanging process post
the ceramics program manager has been begging someone to make a wall-hanging piece for the march show and I decided to oblige! After a couple of designs, I settled on a climbing frog with a little backpack, like one of those tiny air plant sconce planters. i also wanted to try sculpting something BIG since most of my things range from small to tiny.
had to do some research because i have NO IDEA how to make stuff hang from the wall, but settled on putting a little keyhole shape in the bottom and make the body hollow
sculpted its body out of clay as a closed form, which made attachments easier. I think I made the arms and fingers a liiiiiiittle too thin and set myself up for much future pain.
it was so precarious, i didn't pick him up for weeeeeks. poked holes in his nose so he wouldnt EXPLODE as the clay dried and shrank
i slapped underglaze on him and the backpack (which is a tiny cup that I threw and attached thumb pots to) and attached them after color was on. also made a little rope and a water bottle for him to carry :)
he is sitting on a kiln shelf at this point because he was leatherhard enough to move without sagging and still wet enough that he wasn't tooooo fragile. also carved the keyhole in at this point but I did eyeball the size so we will see if the nail/screw fits after shrinkage
he is sitting on a kiln shelf at this point because he was leatherhard enough to move without sagging and still wet enough that he wasn't tooooo fragile
i let him dry over 3 weeks - very very very slowly, just unwrapping him whenever i was in the studio and leaving him covered the rest of the time. two of his fingers still snapped as he got bone dry :( - i did my best to reattach with some slip & put some more underglaze over but we will see how that goes
finally placed him in the kiln (peep the little ammonite & elasmosaur in the corner) for bisque firing. someone asked me his name and i said i wasn't ready to name him yet since he might explode stilll.....
came out unscathed (except his fingers are still not doing so great)! quick coat of clear glaze & some more underglaze details, then 🤞 for firing #2
all done and hung up!! he looks great but his finger did break :( made a little makeshift bandaid for him and reattached it with putty.
side note this green underglaze is hideous and i hate it and im switching to chartreuse. it never comes out the bright froggy green that i hope it will! these little dino guys mostly came out great but the ones with the green underglaze look like antiques :( but they're kissing :)

I'd probably be a raccoon if I were an animal, which animal would you be? Ceramic lamp sculpture of a raccoon, decorated using my sgraffito tools. It's still leatherhard, so fingers crossed everything goes well with drying and firing. 🤞🏻 ~swipe to see him from all sides~ +/- 35cm high, built with coil method.
