Mini-review:

Oof, what a disappointment. I feel like this wanted to be one of those transgressive teen shows we get in the West, but then it didn't have the guts to go all the way and ended up being like any other kdrama about the rich and the poor. And even then, it's just not good at that either. The writing leaves a lot to be desired, and it gets more boring with every episode. The acting is also all over the place; some of the actors do a solid job, but most of them are mediocre or downright terrible. Tbh, there are two things that save this drama from disaster: firstly, the director adds a lot of style and flair to the proceedings; secondly, sometimes it's fun to see a bunch of super pretty people all together in one place. But still, there are a lot of shows where you can find those things with much better quality. I wouldn't recommend Hierarchy, unless you really love someone in the cast...

You know what's better than noble idiocy? Noble idiocy that noble idiot cannot keep up with! The scream I let out here!!!!

What I really love is they took a reason some other drama would treat as real for her not wanting to be with him and made it something she never felt and just tried to use it to create a distance between them for his protection.

Because!!!! Her whole "you killed my father to save my life" would be such a thing a FL in a different drama would hold against ML and yours truly would seethe because the man was given Sophie's Choice - it was always kill one and save the other, he just got to pick who - and so he should not be hated for it. And here the drama goes with that for once!!! because here she only says it to him, that she blames him, to push him away to protect him. She never ever holds it against him - all she feels is guilt that love for her put him into this insane situation and now is putting him in deadly danger. Do you know how freaking unique this is?

The way she blames herself because she wanted to see him so badly she agreed to the devil's bargain with the spooks...and he's so gentle and is all "how is any of this your fault?"

I love them so!

This man is so completely broken that I honestly think he's never gonna be truly fixed, he's just gonna live with the damage and be content with his Jae Hee in the middle of nowhere despite it.

I love watching unhealthy, codependent relationships in fiction but they have to make sense to me - it has to make sense to me why character X goes against logic and common sense and any understanding of healthy interactions to act the way they do. That is one of the reasons I enjoy period dramas more - it's a lot easier to show that in that setting. DS is a modern drama that manages tho. This man is so broken on such a basic level that it makes sense that he sees all the red flags and doesn't care. I can totally buy that he realizes that there is something mega shady about JH showing up. He is aware Jae Hee may be a NK spy, that she may be there to entrap/harm him or entrap/harm someone else - I mean he just got shot at in the hospital - and he genuinely doesn't care. He is neither curious nor concerned because he's so utterly disassembled, all he cares about is that she's back in whatever capacity, the rest truly doesn't matter. And it's not bad writing or giving him brain damage suddenly or w/e, it's totally consistent with his issues.

Like - he's either asked or received zero explanation and he couldn't care less.

At least he got laid before it all went to hell again?

PS I am burning thru the eps and am 9 eps in already because I ff medical procedures; I always found that topic boring as fuck in any narrative. He's a genius doctor, I accept it, now let's move on.
