Boys Planet Ep 2, recap Part 2.
Here’s the second half of my recap of Boys Planet, Episode 2. We dive into the jerseys, the signal song test, and the new star levels.
Anyway, here it is! Enjoy.
We pick up at 49:35 in, where we are treated to a snowy drone view of the Boys Planet dorm buildings, and yeah, they’re pretty unremarkable red brick and glass boxes. I mean, it’s no shiny cube in the middle of a forest.
The boys, just getting out of their auditions, are brought to some large space and I assume that as they come in a staff-nim makes hand gestures to indicate that they have to be super surprised and delighted by what they find. They exclaim over and over about how everything is so yeppeun (pretty). EVERYTHING. Even these hideous shirts.
Tumblr media
They’re color coded -- a color for the sleeve area indicates their star level, and the chest is either blue to indicate K-group or pink to indicate G-group.As you can see in the picture, from worst to best, it goes gray, then yellow, then gree., then orange -- not shown here, the 4 stars have purple sleeves. They’re all ugly but I think the one star/G-group is the worst.
The all-stars get their shirts last, and they have extra shiny stars on their sleeves. Kim Gyuvin, who you may recall from Kick It (he was the one who did New Thangs! right into the camera), interviews that he loves the shirt so much that it is “the meaning of life.” He has his purple All-Star shirt on over his audition outfit, and he looks like he could fall asleep while talking.
Tumblr media
The four male judges come in and tell them that their level will be reassigned in a week. This makes the 0-3 level trainees, like Han Yu Seop from team GBTB and Mirotic’s Kim Ji Woo, determined to improve, and makes the 4-stars, like Han Seo Bin from the unaired Freak,  scared that they’ll lose their status. The test that will determine their level is the Signal Song test -- they have to learn the choreography for the great big giant group number. Just like in previous seasons, the top ranked trainees will be performing on the top of a big pyramid, and the lowest ranked trainees will barely get to participate. Bak Do Ha, from the Blue House, says he doesn’t want to dance on the floor, and Takuto says he’ll have to work harder. The judges go on to say that whichever group has more stars after the reassigned star levels will get more screentime during that performance, which appears to be a big deal to them.
Side note: I never understand why they worry that much about whether they’re the center in the performance or not. I mean, it’s about how MNET edits you -- do they show you at all? If so, do they show you in a good light, a pathetic light, or an evil light? And that honestly seems to be luck of the draw. Whether you’re in the center or the bottom, you will get votes based on how much the audience falls in love with you, as evidenced by the fairly high ranking of Bak Do Ha -- 27th.
Anyway. The judges reveal the title of the Signal Song, “Here I am” (but I’m the real translation is more like “I shine”) The boys go absolutely wild for just the title, the pd-nim nods and says we can use that take. The judges tease that the’re going to play the song, but first they have to kick out the Global trainees, who lost the competition. Once the despised foreigners are gone, the song gets played, and it’s no “Pick Me,” but nothing is.
Seo Won from Attention/NINE.i likes it, pretty boy wacker Sung Han Bin thinks he can do it well, and talented Lee YeDam from Gambler thinks it’s amazing. Han Bin muses to Seo Won that “it’s really important to stay fit,” which is probably good advice for someone planning to go on this show. The boys are worried about singing it live, and yeah, the song was deliberately written to be impossible to sing live.
There’s a story that the guys in SHINee used to sing while running on a treadmill in order to build breath control so they could sing while they dance. They probably taught that trick to their hoobaes in EXO and NCT. Being an idol is a seriously physical endeavor -- like some sort of hybrid between an actor and an athlete.
55:32 Hanging Out
The boys are moving in to their dorms, and getting to know their new roomates. We see some of the rooms -- they have bunkbeds and a tall wardrobe/locker, as well as a humidifier and an alarm clock. We see that they are given roommates on the same team, K or G, but regardless of star-rank. That makes sense, because they easily could have to move in a week and that would be a lot of moving around.
Looks like the G-group rooms were assigned regardless of home country, so we see the trainees using Korean as a lingua franca. (It does seem that a lot of these trainees speak a lot more Korean than did the Japanese girls on Produce 48.) I won’t go into every detail, but they get to know each other and are silly. In some rooms, they can’t think of what to say to one another! So fun! In other rooms, they’re having a loud laughing party for the cameras! They’re making friends and being good hyungs (older brother-types). Mr. Sexy Kim Ji Woong sleeps with a facial mask on! It’s all cute stuff.
59:00 Learning the Signal Song
The boys meet to practice singing. It’s way too high for basically any of them to sing, because not everyone is a trained tenor or a highly trained baritone. (Click here for my rant on this if you haven’t seen it.)  They ask for a volunteer to try singing it, and little boxer Takuto (0 stars) tries. Solji says, “Takuto, you don’t know how to sing,” which like, wow.
Tumblr media
But, I mean, true.
Lee Da Eul, who was one of the two boys who walked in first, tries next. Then Zhang Hao, leader of the G-group Kick It team, tries, and nails it, of course. Nation’s sweetheart Sung Han Bin interviews sweetly that he was intimidated.
Now it’s time for the dance instruction. They’re given five minutes to memorize it (?) and then asked to perform it. Sexy Jellyfish Park Gun Wook (GBTB) gets called out for his lack of focus, and Canada’s Pride/Xiumin Impersonator Seok Matthew gets praised.
The zero stars try and knock things over and bump into each other and stuff. Red-House Jung Min Gyu promises to practice a lot.
The four stars try next, and Han Yu Jin - the 15-year-old phenom from the Korean Kick It team is struggling a lot, as is Hui. One of the interchangeably cruel dance teachers asks Han Yu Jin, you know, a sophomore in high school who is probably away from home for the first time, why he hasn’t mastered the choreography already. Was what they saw already just a fluke? Yeah, asshole, Yujin must just not care about this. Yell at him some more. Try saying, “Why are you dancing bad? I told you to dance good!!!” That will help.
Tumblr media
In his interview, he looks dazed and sickly, his eyes half closed, his hair stuck in clumps to his forehead. Is he sick? Han Yu Jin-ny! Come to noona. I’ll give you some aspirin and hot cocoa and make you lie down for a bit. You guys see it too, right? I’m not crazy? He’s sick? Someone take care of that child!
The dance judges berate the 4 stars some more, because they’re psychopaths.
Wait, why is Na Kamden (he was the other American who auditioned with Jay) wearing a pearl necklace?
Tumblr media
I went back and checked, and he wore it during his audition and every other time we’ve seen him so far. Hey, I love a guy with style -- it just seems like it would be uncomfortable to wear 24/7. It also feels like there’s a story here. Anyone know?
1:04:25 The Zero Stars have a Singing Lesson
There are a lot of relatively unknown trainees in this room, so here’s a list of our zero stars, along with their audition song and current rank.
K-Group
Jeon Woo Seok Criminal (barefoot) 60 Jung Se Yun Damdadi 68  Jang Min Seo Damdadi withdrawn  Bak Do Ha My House (blue) 27 Jung Min Gyu My House (red) 50
G-group
Yuki Crown 36 Wang Yan Hong Hot 79 Yang Jun Hot 84 Takuto Instead Of... 20 Nice Kokobop 71 Cai Jin Xin Reveal 42 Itsuki Shine 65 Ouju Shine 67 Yutaka n/a 57 Hyo n/a 62 Toui n/a 85
Yutaka has(light brown hair in a bowl cut and Hyo has a blonde ruff in the front. Yutaka, Hyo, and Toui all were supposed to perform Shine with the others, but were sick, and thus were automatically assigned no stars.
The vocal teacher asks if they feel confident, and Yuki interviews, in Japanese, “I’ve never taken dancing or singing lessons. I’m afraid the’d think I’m bad.” And we see that on his intake form, he filled in that his training period is 0 months. Awww. I feel especially bad for Japanese contestants on these shows, because they are nearly always completely untrained. Takuto says he’s trained for 9 months -- nine whole months? -- but knows that’s not enough.
Tumblr media
Left to right: Jang Min Seo, Bak Do Ha, Yutaka, Itsuki, Hyo, Nice, and Yang Jun.
Oh man, I translated that caption and then they translated it too. Well, I was pretty close.
Tumblr media
Left to right: Jeon Woo Seok (who is doing some kind of vocal warmup, I think), Jung Se Yun, Jung Min Gyu, ?, Takuto, Ouju, ?, ? (the ?s are Yuki, Wang Yan Hong, and Cai Jin Xin, in some order, I think. Maybe one is Toui? Sorry, I can’t see their name tags.)
They get started singing. Min Seo sounds very strange and pinched, and his voice cracks a lot. It’s no better for any of the others.  Nice continues his habit of not ever looking up. Then Jung Min Gyu goes, and he’s straining hard but he’s on key, actually. Good for him! The judge explains that they need to conserve their breath to sing, and shows them how as they sing they shouldn’t ruffle a piece of paper in front of their mouths. It makes me so happy when someone actually teaches them instead of just yelling at them to DO BETTER! BE GOOD AT THIS! Yang Jun interviews that it helped a lot, and like, yeah, imagine that.
Bak Do Ha, from the blue house, tries to sing, and he really can’t. The vocal trainer, not unkindly, wonders why he wants to be an idol instead of an actor, since he’s handsome and cannot sing at all. Do Ha says he wants to be an idol, and the trainer sighs, like, ok, I’ll do my best, I guess. But Do Ha can’t repeat a note that he hears. I think he’s tone deaf. You’d think maybe his agency could have noticed this in time to not send him here?
He cries in the confessional. Aww.
1:08:30 All Star Lessons
We know most of these guys, so let’s get straight to it. They’re having a vocal lesson with Solji, and after they sing together one time through, Solji wants to figure out where the discordant notes are coming from. We focus on my little cousin Kum Jeon Hyun (from Nu Nu Na Na), he of the triumphant shouts, for a bit as he tries to sing, and it’s obviously a strain. He says he has a bad throat today, and the editing blames that on his shouting.
Haruto says that he’s “tone deaf,” and Solji laughs out right, but later on he explains that he just made a mistake with his Korean. Aww, Haruto, your Korean is mostly really great! He meant to say that he has a low range voice, ie, is a bass or maybe a baritone. We still don't see or hear him singing. MNET is sort of... hiding that from us.
Keita does great and Solji praises him. Another trainee, Kim Min Seoung (also from Nu Nu Na Na) notes that even though Keita auditioned primarily as a rapper (in Conduct Zero), his singing voice is good too. You’d expect that this would be the standard for a debuted idol like Keita (he’s in Ciipher) but maybe not always.
Kim Gyu Bin has been hiding in the back. (He was from the Kick It-K team). His singing (both notes and pronunciation) causes Solji to make this face:
Tumblr media
She asks him if he lived abroad, his pronunciation is so bad.
Han Yu Jin looks wavery and blinky, and he’s barely making sounds. Instead of asking if the swaying sophomore might be sick, Solji berates him soundly.
The 4-stars go to dance lessons, and the MNET editors remind us that Yujin did great at the audition and has a lot to live up to. But he doesn’t do that well in his dance class, and again, he gets yelled at. Does anyone look after these children? Are there like, RAs or something?
The dance master/psychopath points out that the members of the Kick It team are all struggling and asks if they just practiced Kick It for their whole lives. (In the translation on Viki, they call it Hero, which is the translation of the song’s Korean title.) While they’re getting berated, their Chinese fellow Yuehua trainee, Zhang Hao, looks on with an expression I can’t quite read. I think he’s angry and concerned. He interviews that Yuehua doesn’t really provide training -- at least, I think that’s what this means:
Tumblr media
Team Yuehaw! Giddyup!
He’s worried that his younger teammates will have trouble memorizing the choreography.
1:14:30 3 Stars Dance Lesson
The psycho dance master tells the 3 stars that they’re all doing great. Sexy Jellyfish Park Gunwook shows off, as do Canada’s pride Seok Matthew and pretty waacker Sung Hanbin.
Lee Hwanhee, the main vocalist from Up10tion who did Who as his audition in the red jacket, interviews that K-group is really tight, and points out some of the same trainees. Then we have a little dance off between various K-group trainees and G-group trainees.
Wang Zi Hao, ranked 29th, a 21-year old whose unaired audition was to Lay’s Veil and who apparently specializes in krumping, faces off against Sexy Jellyfish Park GunWook, ranked 15th. They’re both great, and I don’t think a winner is declared.
Then, I assume a producer whispers something off camera to the dance teacher, and the dance teacher asks best friends Matthew and Hanbin go against each other. Yoon Jong Woo, who sort of kissed Kim Ji Woong before their performance of Mirotic, interviews that they’re very similar, and I guess I’ll take their word for it. I don’t perceive them to be particularly similar in their dancing styles but I’m glad that they’re friends, and it seems that their gentle rivalry is affectionate. It seems obvious to me that Hanbin is better at dancing, but the teacher gives it to Matthew, so what do I know? Nothing, I guess.
1:18:53 Two Stars Dance Practice
The editors want us to be worried about Lee Da Eul, who came in first and did the silly hammy dancing at the end of his audition. His 2-star classmates don’t have interesting storylines, I guess, even though there are 24 trainees in this group, making it the largest group.
Choi Ji Ho interviews that he’s worried about Lee Da Eul, I was like, wait, who the heck is Choi Ji Ho? Turns out I actually missed his audition to Kai’s Mmmh so I’ll have to edit my post on the unaired auditions -- sorry, team, this is a huge undertaking. My quick take is that at 18, he’s a good young dancer, and Kai’s Mmmph was too sensual and adult of a song for him. I think he wrote his own rap, so that’s good. He looks up to GD from Big Bang and Jimin from BTS, so seems like rapping and dancing are his things, not vocals, and he’s currently ranked 55th. Ok, back to the Lee Da Eul storyline, which I’m sure everyone here is more interested in, right?
After Choi Ji Ho, we hear from Jang Ji Ho, a member of NINE.i who auditioned with Attention, who is also worried about Lee Da Eul.  Da Eul was confident in his star test, but now he’s lost his confidence and feels like he doesn’t belong in two stars -- I mean, he doesn’t, poor kid. Da Eul has a star sparkle to him for sure, but he has only enough training to know the difference between good and bad singing and dancing, and to know that what he’s doing is more on the bad end of the spectrum, and that’s an awful place to be in your training if you’re on a show like this.
Da Eul himself interviews that everyone else is doing well. Haru, who auditioned to Maniac in a green shirt, gets praised; then Lee Dong Yeol, a debuted idol in Up10tion, gets told that he has improved a lot; then Wumuti, the distinctive looking trainee who sang UN Village for his audition, is told he could be an All Star.
Lee Seung Hwan, who we met during his performance of Mirotic and who was a member of project group 1THE9 and a backup dancer for Oneus, also is worried about Da Eul because he hides in the back. So he kindly brings Da Eul to the middle so that he’ll have an easier view of himself in the mirror. Da Eul is touched by the kindly hyung’s attention.
Now that we spent about 90 seconds on that, let’s move on to…
1:20:16 Zero Stars Dance Practice
The G-group are rehearsing with charming Ouju at the helm. You might remember Ouju from his audition performance of Shine. Ouju is a weak singer, but a fairly decent dancer. Hyo (who didn’t audition) interviews (in Japanese) that Ouju has had a year of dance training, which contradicts what the show said earlier, but that’s ok.
The trainees are copying his movements, which the MNET editors indicate kind of cutely.
Tumblr media
Cai Jin Xin also interviews (in Chinese) that Ouju is helpful -- we met Jin Xin in his performance of Reveal with all the tall trainees. Then Yang Jun from the infamous Hot performance gives Ouju the thumbs up.
Tumblr media
Things like this are why I watch shows like this. I love watching a leader emerge to lead the low ranking teams. I love the camaraderie. I love this stuff. I bet Ouju will rise in the rankings because I think a lot of people feel the way I do. He’s currently 67 -- let’s see where he ends up!
Tumblr media
Gotta say, Takuto looks cute in a backwards hat! I think he’ll grow up to be handsome. By the way, notice Nice in the background, still looking down? He’s always looking down, you guys.
And that’s enough checking in with the trainees during their practice! We never check in with the 1 stars at all. That’s 16 trainees, all but 4 of whom are Global.
Side note, because I was curious:
There are 17 Japanese trainees and 18 Chinese Trainees (I don’t include Taipei). The Japanese trainees have 22 stars among them, so 1.29 stars per trainee, while the Chinese trainees have 29 among them, so 1.61 stars per trainee.  The 45 Korean trainees have 114 stars among them, so 2.53 stars per trainee. Also, a total of 194 stars were given to the 93 trainees, which is 2.08 stars per trainee, so the Japanese trainees have star levels that are about half of the average, while the Chinese star levels are about two thirds of the average. I don’t have a point to make. I just felt like doing math and thought I’d tell you what I found out. I love spreadsheets a lot. Ok, let’s continue.
1:21:28 Phone Home Montage
Aww, it’s time to watch the trainees call home and possibly cry! Get your tissues handy, folx. I’ll mention people’s ages here because I think it sheds light on this kind of thing.
Jay (21) greets his mom (in English, of course).
Park Gwan Young (22) who I thought was the best of the Lullaby group, calls his mom.
Pretty Sung Han Bin (21) has a funny convo with his mother, who begins to tell a story and then asks if it’s being recorded. She has a funny, breathless voice that I find super charming. Han Bin Oh-ma, fighting!
Next we see Qiu Sheng Yeng, 21, the blonde guy from the Taipei team who did Tiger Inside, with super flexible stick wielding Chen Kuan Jui as their leader. He tears up as he talks to his mom.
Next is 17-year-old Lim Jun Seo, who was one of those first two boys who came in, the ones who performed in Replay, who is also clearly crying.
Then Yuto, 18, one of the “short” Conduct Zero team, whose face is squinched up from trying to hold in the tears. Awwww. He insists that he’s “daijobu” (ok) but he can barely get the word out.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, dance phenom/ sick baby Han Yujin tries to call his mother, but she doesn’t answer. He doesn’t look quite as sick as he did in his previous confessionals, so hopefully he’s alright. The staff member sounds genuinely concerned and offers to pass along a message, so Yujin says to tell his mom that he’s working hard.
Next is Jang Min Gyu, 23, from the red house. He struggles to get his mom to understand that he’s on camera right now, and it turns out she’s kind of drunk. Hoo boy.
My little cousin / noted screamer Kum Jun Hyeon, 19, gets a “this number does not exist” message. Oh no!
Next is Jang Yeo Jun, 17, from the GBTB Jellyfish team, who doesn’t seem too emotional at first, until his mother talks about how much she misses him and then he breaks down completely. We learn in a flashback that he doesn’t go to school right now because he’s focused on his training. Similarly, noted all-star Haruto left Japan to come to Korea for this, and a lot of people don’t understand why.  The tender piano music kicks in as we get a montage of the boys talking about how important this is to them. Vietnamese trainee Dang Hong Hai interviews, in Korean, that every moment he gets to perform is so precious, and auburn-haired All Star Zhang Hao says he’ll never give up. We see the boys practicing at night in their rooms, in the dark.
1:25:03 Signal Song Test Day
The boys are gathered into two large rooms, one for K and one for G, and arranged on middle-school-chorus-style risers by their star level. Seeing them all together, it really strikes you again how different the distribution of the star levels is between the two groups.
Tumblr media
(I love Bak Do Ha, from the blue house) meditating, top right.
The trainees are informed via closed-circuit tv that they’ll be brought, one at a time, into a small room with three judges who will determine their final star level based on their performance of the Signal Song. Meanwhile, their teammates will be watching their audition via closed circuit TV as well.
For the most part, the boys are scared. Mingyu (red house) interviews that he’s nervous to perform right in front of the judges. Lee Dong Gun (who is only 17, performed Criminal wearing shoes [the other guy was barefoot], and who I think danced very well and sang much better than he was given credit) feels the same way.  Wumuti is shocked too.
Then the trainees are told that whoever has the most stars at the end of this test will get some other benefit, but it’s a pretty minor one -- that group’s All Stars and Center will get more camera time in the Signal Song performance. Honestly, it doesn’t probably impact them much.
Sexy Jellyfish Park Gunwook thinks K will win by a landslide, because he has a command of basic math and knows that K is currently winning by a 3:2 ratio and that this is unlikely to change. Thai NINE.i member Winnie thinks G-group is solid, but I notice that he doesn’t say he thinks they’ll win. Nation’s sweetheart Sung Han Bin and Canada’s pride Seok Matthew are sure they’ll get all stars this time.
Noted all-star Haruto mutters to himself in Korean (not his native tongue, Japanese), which is very charming. He’s worried, of course, that G-group can’t possibly win with all those 0-stars. Let’s put it this way: Assume that K-group doesn’t gain or lose any stars, and then assume that half of the 0, 1, 2, and 3 star G-group members advance one level and that no G-group members drop a level, EVEN THEN, G group would lose. There would basically have to be a miracle.
The judging panel for the G-group is made up of Solji, one of the psycho dance masters, and the rarely seen Rap Master. The judging panel for K-group is Lip J, the other psycho dance master, and the male vocal trainer. Seems… weird, but ok.
Zero stars:
Yang Jun from Hot
He does poorly -- he’s shaky on both the dance and the lyrics and sort of gives up partway through. Oh no. The judges actually laugh at him and he stays in zero stars.
Yutaka -- one of the ones who didn’t audition because he was sick. Makes up his own choreo.
Wang Yan Hong from Hot: Randomly stops singing
Nice from Kokobop: Sings poorly, and LOOKS DOWN
Ouju from Shine, the dance teacher of zero stars G group, a personal fave: Clearly has a very sore throat and should have been resting it but has been pushing through and singing anyway. Someone put this boy on vocal rest and give him some slippery elm lozenges, stat.
The judges are overwhelmed with the awfulness. The dance master wonders aloud if there is something below zero stars, and Solji quips, “aren’t the houses below zero stars?” I kind of love that they’re known as “the houses” but also oh god, I hope their mental health is ok.
Now to the K-group zero stars. Lee Jeong Hyeon, a 3-star trainee who wore the white short sleeved jacked in The Real, interviews that he’s really impressed by Jang Min Gyu, the red house, because Mingyu is just now learning to dance, and Jeong Hyeon is impressed by how hard Mingyu is working. We see Mingyu hanging out in the hallway and asking anyone who will help him how the choreo goes. Many of the trainees weigh in to say similar things. It’s sweet to see, but we are theoretically looking for someone who is ready to debut now, right?
By the end of the montage though, I’m thinking -- he does look a lot better. His performance is spliced in with other trainees saying he’s doing well, and it really does look kind of ok. I would have given him 1 star -- that’s my rating for someone who shows signs of vague improvement. He comes back to K-group and everyone is shocked when he sits back in 0-stars. I am too, honestly. I wish I could see a sample of what the judges consider 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 stars here.
After the red house, it’s time for the Blue House. Bak Do Ha (sometimes the subtitles transliterate his family name as Park) has been trying his best and really wants a 1-star. He is sort of on key at start, and then it goes off the rails totally. Poor guy. He tries to the end, but zero stars for him. At 1:34:41, nation’s sweetheart Han Bin goes over to Doha to offer him a hug, and Doha ends up just collapsing into tears as his hyung holds him. Awww. Sometimes you  just  can’t hold it in when someone is nice to you, it just sort of opens the flood gates. Doha, you’re not ready to debut, and I hope you do just go into acting because I don’t think you ever will be ready to debut, but you seem like a decent fellow.
Next is Takuto. He throws in a wink at a specific point, which the judges think is clever and shows signs of “natural star personality.” His vocals are not remotely accurate, but the judges find him charming anyway, and he gets 1 star, and he collapses into tears of stress and relief. That doesn’t quite seem fair to red house Jang Min Gyu, but it is kind of sweet.
Next, the 1-stars.
Dong Dong from the Taipei team who did Tiger Inside.
Zhang Shuai Bo, my favorite from the tall Reveal team.
Chen Jian Yu from the Call Me Baby team.
Wen Ye Chen also from the Call Me Baby team (their main vocalist).
Xuan Hao, the blonde member of God’s Menu, who I thought deserved 2 stars. He must think so too, because when he’s done with his audition, he rolls down his sleeve to show that he has star stickers stuck to his arm. Cute! But no dice with the judges.
Wen Ye Chen drops down to no stars, and the others stay in 1 stars.
Tumblr media
Up next is Cong from Vietnam, who auditioned with SHINee’s View. I said at the time that his 1 star was cruelly low and his singing was pretty decent -- that it seems like they dinged him mostly for pronunciation, when maybe staying on key should be more relevant. The editing agrees, and we see flashbacks of him working hard on his pronunciation. His fellow trainees are impressed with him, and rightfully so. He’s still a bit flat here and there on those highest notes, but it’s really close, and the dancing looks good to me too. The judges actually agree -- he moves up to 3 stars!  Charming Ouju, the pride of the zero stars, interviews in Japanese that Cong’s performance outshined the All Stars’. Aww. You guys, Ouju is winning me over hardcore. I don’t want him in the final line up, but I want good things to happen for him.
Next is Lee Seung Hwan, who pulls together his jersey to make it look more like a 4-star shirt, and the insane editors color it purple so that the people at home have no idea what is going on. For a second I was like, “is he doing some sort of magic trick?” but no, it was just editing. I mean, to be fair, cannabis is legal where I live, just sayin’, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who was confused?
Tumblr media
We’ve met Lee Seung Hwan before during his performance of Mirotic.  He’s the one who used to be in project group 1THE9 and also was a backup dancer for Oneus. He also was the one who worried about Lee Da Eul and brought him to the middle of the 2-star dance practice. He does great -- good facial expressions -- though his singing was a bit strained. He gets promoted to 3 stars!
Next is Lee Da Eul, who got so much story focus earlier in the episode. He smiles like he’s confident at the beginning, but things go off the rails. He almost wants to give up, but pushes through. When he’s done, he sets his jaw firmly to not cry. The judges send him down to No stars.
1:43:24 The three stars audition
First up is Mr Sexy himself, Kim Ji Woong from Mirotic and BL dramas. The judges call him “the only sexy character on Boys Planet” -- don’t they know about Park Gunwook? He dances so sexily that his hair turns into a heart!
Tumblr media
The male vocal judge says, “You can sense that he’s trying to accomplish something. For people like that, they have a lot of potential.” But he stays at 3 levels, because his dancing and singing are both a little too sexy.
Seo Won, from NINE.i / Attention, interviews that it’s going to be tough to be an All Star.
Lee Jeong Hyeon from The Real tries next, then Park Hyunbeen from GBTB, then Anthonny from Glitch Mode, then Na Kamden, the American who auditioned with Jay. The judges say their dancing is three stars, but their singing is lacking.  All remain 3 stars.
Tumblr media
Next up is one of my faves, Kim Tae Rae, the floppy haired one with the great voice in The Real. He keeps up that charming smile as he performs. The judges say his singing is All Star Level, but his dancing is lacking, so he stays in 3 stars.
Back in the waiting area, Oh Sung Min from Bloom Bloom is talking about whether K or G will win, and Kim Min Hyuk from Lullaby says that they’re at a disadvantage because they have so many high scorers, that they have more to lose, and that it will be easier for the G group to advance. Yeah, maybe, but the competition isn’t who can gain the most stars; the competition is who will have the most stars. I really think these boys don’t understand how math works.
Up next is Sexy Jellyfish Park Gunwook, who brings charisma and power to his audition performance. He cracks a few notes but really does well overall. He comes back in and his fellow trainees ask for his score, and we find out that judges have decided to reserve judgment for right now. Speaking of how math works, I came back to edit this in: If you can’t stand to wait to find out how many stars he gets, solve this simple equation, and the answer will be his star rating.  7x - 3 = 25  Otherwise, you’ll find out shortly into the third episode.
Up next is nation’s sweetheart, Sung Han Bin, who declares himself a candidate for center position of the Signal Song. We see almost his whole audition, and of course, he does great and is given 4 stars.
Naturally, Canada’s pride Seok Matthew is next. The judges are still considering Park Gunwook, and they say that Seok Matthew’s vocals are better than Gunwook’s, but that even though Matthew’s dancing had “groove,” he messed up the choreo a bit. They keep Matthew in 3 stars. Matthew cries a little and says in English that he was nervous, and Jay and others console him in English, saying that he didn’t look nervous.
1:53:25 Four Stars
First, they pretend that Hui is going to audition right now. Instead, we get a 2 minute flashback montage, set to tense music, showing Hui getting negative feedback about his dancing and having to ask younger trainees for help.  Blue-haired Park Hanbin from The Real interviews that he didn’t think he himself would be able to handle going from artist to trainee*, and my little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon, he of the notable yelling, says (off camera), “The way he would humble himself before guys much younger than him was cool, but as a fan, it hurt to see it,” and yeah, that’s where I’m at, cuz. Han Seo Bin, one of the animated rappers from Freak, says that he thought that Hui was amazing. Hui himself says, “I’m fine. I believe that if you’re lacking, you should learn.”
*More on the “artist” thing. Notice that Hanbin used the English word “artist” to describe Hui, and that actually really matters. In the Korean musical landscape, a distinction is drawn between artists and idols. For example, people generally consider IU an artist, and I’m pretty sure Bibi would be considered one as well. But the members of say, Blackpink or BTS, despite their skill and talent and all that, are considered idols. Using the word “artist” elevates what Hui is capable of -- he’s not just a pretty face who endorses brands; he makes real music. It was a big compliment, and one I would agree with.
The song test starts, but oh no, guys. Hui forgets the lyrics and then can’t find the key to sing. He keeps going, and of course his voice sounds great, but yeah. They put him in three stars.
Mun Jung Hyun, the cool raspy rapper from The Real (watch the full performance on Youtube!!), interviews that he’s worried that Group G will win. Then, I assume, he goes off camera and eats the special treat the staff dangled in front of him to get him to say that, because no way he actually believes that.
Meanwhile, Zhang Hao, the auburn haired Yuehua leader, takes his level test and does great, holding on to 4 stars for his group.
He’s pretty happy about it.
Tumblr media
Up next is Jay, and we’re reminded how great he is and how everyone likes him. He apparently had a lot of trouble learning the choreography. We see a flashback of him in the training room, crying in frustrations, and we see kindly Keita helping him. As Jay explains in halting Korean, he feels bad that Keita took time from his own practice to help him. If I were Jay, I’d mention that in the audition room. In any case, he keeps his all star level, and Keita says he knew it would happen. Keita seems like a good egg.
At 2:01:30, it’s golden maknae Han Yujin’s turn, and OH MY GOD I WAS RIGHT. It turns out he was really sick! All his Yuehua teammates were worried about him, especially charming mophaired Kim Gyu Vin. Jesus, the show is admitting that they let this 15 year old with a high fever work himself half to death? Honestly, fuck this show sometimes.
Tumblr media
Feel free to skip to next episode at 2:02:00 or so.
Here’s the live voting results. Anyone who made a change of more than 15 spots will be in bold.
Biggest Riser: Na Kamden, up 45!

Short Kdramas/Drama Special/Web Drama
Part 2
These short kdramas fit in nicely when my drama capacity is challenging. Since some of you may experience a similar drama challenge, I thought I'd share these kdramas with you.
Part 1 here
Check Out The Event
Tumblr media
Ha Song Yi (Bang Min Ah) and Park Do Kyum (Kwon Hwa Woon) broke up after five years of dating. It wasn't what she wanted, but he is determined and doesn't intend to explain his reasons very well. Meanwhile, Song Yi ends up winning a promotion that the two signed up for together while they were dating, worth an all-expenses-paid trip to Jeju Island. Not to miss the opportunity, she asks Do Kyum to accompany her, and, surprisingly, he accepts.
This is a short drama, with only four episodes and wonderful cinematography. A melodrama with a touch of comedy. All this with the beautiful landscapes of Jeju in the background.
It tries to pass on an interesting message, especially with regard to communication in relationships.
You Drive me Crazy
Tumblr media
Eun-Sung (Lee Yoo-Young) works as a French interpreter. She is friends with Rae-Wan (Kim Sun-Ho). They have been friends for 8 years, since they were both college students. One night they sleep together and their relationship is never the same again.
It is a short and amazing drama. In my opinion, what made this simple story so beautiful is the impeccable chemistry between the protagonists. I know it's a pretty beaten plot, friends/lovers, but what's different about this one is that the protagonist is very unpredictable and conquers in a unique way. It's really funny to watch their relationship develop. She really drives him crazy.
One of my favourite short stories.
Page Turner
Tumblr media
It is a three-part KBS Drama Special starring Kim So-hyun, Ji Soo and Shin Jae-ha. It tells the story of a piano prodigy Yoon Yoo-seul who goes blind after a car accident, and struggles to get her life back together with the help of Jung Cha-sik, an aspiring pianist and Seo Jin-mok, her former rival who later becomes a supporter.
This one is so good too. Again, I feel like watching more episodes because we need more time with them. I wanted to know more about their dreams and their achievements. And that's the only cons of this drama.
Quick shout out for the mums. Yoo Seul’s mom (Ye Ji Won) and Cha Sik’s mom (Hwang Young Hee). I loved them.
The Taste of Curry
Tumblr media
Another KBS Drama Special. The curry restaurant "Cat's Restaurant" is run by Yu-Mi (Jeon Hye-Bin). She doesn't have many customers and one day, the restaurant is vandalized. Yu-Mi knocks down a suspect with her groceries and he passes out. When he wakes up, the guy (Hyun Woo) is unable to remember his own name. Until he regains his memory, the man helps out at Yu-Mi's restaurant.
This drama is about finding mutual healing and is quite sweet and emotional. Hyun Woo is a very charming and talented actor who proves here that he definitely deserves a leading role of his own.
If We Were a Season
Tumblr media
It tells the story of Hye Rim (Chae Soo Bin) and Gi Seok (Jang Dong Yoon) who was born on the same day and grew up together being close friends. Their friendship is genuine and it looks like it will lead into a deeper relationship but then, one day Dong Kyeong (Jung Jin Young) came to their school and shake Hye Rim's world.
At only an hour long, I think this show did a solid job of telling its story. A quick highlight for the positives: Hye Rim and Gi Seok are adorable together. The way they bicker and tease each other and how they care about each other. Jung Jin Young, as the destabilizer of this relationship looks great, with those perfect features and charming smile.
The ending is open-ended and bittersweet but leaves with the hope that there is more to come, that there will be a new beginning.
Individualist Ms. Ji Young
Tumblr media
Yeong has lived her whole life as an individualist. One day, she meets a man who is a totally opposite version of her. He lives for other people. Then these two very different people fall in love.
This is a cute romance between two people of polar opposites who change for the better after they meet. Even though it's only a two hour Show, the development of the story is well accomplished and the characters are very well constructed.
Min Hyo Rin is talented and the role is perfect for her, while Gong Myung...is such a sweet puppy and I can't imagine another actor in the role.
The Hymn of Death
Tumblr media
The Hymn of Death tells the true story of Yun Sim-deok (Shin Hye-sun), Korea's first professional soprano singer, and her romance with playwright Kim U-jin (Lee Jong-suk). There are six half-hour episodes.
I don't really like dramas with unhappy endings but knowing it was a true story and knowing I would get to see two actors I love, I thoroughly enjoyed this drama. And of course Shin Hye-sun and Lee Jong-suk were perfect.
Kiss Goblin
Tumblr media
12 episodes of 15 min. Ban Sook (Bae In Hyuk) is a 160-year-old goblin who wants to become human above all else. But to do so he must assume human form and kiss 10 different women to acquire different emotions.
I mainly got into this show because I liked some gifs I saw and found Bae In Hyuk quite attractive as a goblin. Bansuk is unnatural at first but becomes warmer, sweeter and more dreamy from the sixth episode onwards and I really loved it.
One of my favourite tropes is the forced closeness by living under the same roof, so I was quite pleased when Bansuk started living in Yeon Ah's flat and found the hyper-awareness parts quite delicious.
One Sunny Day
Tumblr media
This drama is 2 hours long and is about Kim Ji-ho (So Ji-sub), a heartbroken man who goes to Jeju Island for work and meets this girl (Kim Ji-won) several times. They both get robbed and have to sleep in the same guest house. While staying on Jeju Island, she heals his broken heart and they fall in love.
It's a very sweet story although simple and restrained but I loved this little drama mainly because it had my beloved So Ji Sub as the lead actor.
Plus it's a drama that shows the wonderful island of Jeju in a way I've never seen it before in any show.
You Are Closer Than I Think
Tumblr media
On their wedding day, a bride leaves a text message to the groom and she goes on their honeymoon alone. The groom tries to find his bride and learns something about her that he never expected. My review here.

3/19/2023 - 3/25/2023: MAISON by Dreamcatcher
Tumblr media
Dreamcatcher is a 7-member girl group who debuted under Dreamcatcher company (formerly Happyface Entertainment) on January 13, 2017. The group has a dark, horror concept, with each member representing nightmares and fear. However, this is not where their story starts.
On September 18, 2014, 5 members debuted in a group called MINX. The group had the classic Kpop cute concept, with their biggest hit being "Shake It". The group was not very successful and disbanded in late 2016. Two months later and with two new members, Dreamcatcher became a powerhouse! The MINX members kept their stage names.
MAISON is a very unique song. Sticking to Dreamcatcher's signature heavy-rock instrumentals, the song is about the importance of caring for the planet before it is too late. The video shows desolate areas, depicting a post-apocalyptic version of the world we know. It serves as a warning for what's to come if we are not careful.
This song earned Dreamcatcher their first music show win in 2022. That first win is a major steppingstone for every kpop group and idol! Dreamcatcher earned their first win 5 years after debut, an accomplishment that was long overdue.
They are expected to have a comeback this summer.

Hongjoong caressed your cheek as you whimpered, shushing you quietly while bringing his other hand up to wipe your tears. You curled into his chest, sobbing quietly at the pain shooting through your stomach while your kind boyfriend rubbed your back. His hand felt warm and soft on your skin, his comforting heat seeping through your thin t-shirt. He murmured praises into your ear, kissing it softly as he spoke to you in a soothing tone.
”It’s okay my Love, I’m here. Shh, shh, calm down it’s okay.”
His words only made you bawl harder, your raging hormones enhancing your emotions. Clutching onto his shirt you cried out at him, sniffling like a child.
“It hurts so much Joong! I-it doesn’t usually hurt this much, why now? We were supposed to have such a nice weekend together but I ruined it..”
Hongjoong instantly lifted your chin up, pecking your lips while ignoring the snot and tears running down your face. He then pressed another kiss to your temple with a smile. His smile was replaced with a mock-stern face, his finger booping your nose as he glared at you.
”Now you listen to me missy. You didn’t ruin shit, you’re the best thing that ever happened to me. So cut the crap, because we‘re going to have an awesome weekend staying in this hotel room all day, okay?”
You nodded, giggling quietly while cupping Hongjoong’s cheek and running a hand through his blond hair. He leaned into your touch, kissing your hand softly before taking it in his own and holding it tight. His thumb rubbed soothingly on the back of your hand, the soft sunlight now streaming through the window making his skin glow slightly. He was your angel, your love.
Hongjoong let out a sigh as your eyelids started to droop, the pain medication starting to make you drowsy. His hand went to the back of your head, stroking it softly as he hummed quietly to you. When you finally fell asleep he kissed your forehead before slowly getting up, pulling on his shoes and putting on a hat and mask to cover himself. When he was finally satisfied no one would be able to recognise him he grabbed a pen and wrote you a note, leaving it next to you before taking his leave.
Waking up to Hongjoong gone 25 minutes later sent you into a state of panic, especially when you saw all his stuff was gone. You called out for him, the lack of response making you fear the worst. Just as you were about to call him you noticed a note on the bedside table, a pen resting nearby. Clutching your stomach you sat up, picking up the note and smiling when you saw Hongjoong’s familiar handwriting, all your worry seeping away.
Dont panic my love, I went to get us some snacks and will be back soon. Love you 🤍
