20240129: the History of LEGO Castle day 029. 1584-1 / 6060-1 Knight's Challenge (1988 / 1989, 168 pieces, 73 different parts) The eight minifigures for this set are completely versatile, with several brand new torsos and no duplicates in the set. -A knight with a blue torso and black arms with the silver breastplate print and blue legs with a black belt. -A Lion Knight red archer torso with blue arms and the gold lion on a triangular blue shield with a gold outline and red legs with a black belt. -A "peasant" with a light gray v-neck torso with blue arms, a black belt with a yellow buckle, a brown pouch, and red legs with a black belt. -A "maiden" with a white torso with blue collar and two-string red necklace with white arms, plain white legs, and a red cone hat. -A Lion Knight red axe-wielder torso with blue arms and the gold and black crossed axe pattern with red legs and a black belt. -A brand new blue torso with black arms and silver scaled mail print and blue legs with a black belt. -A black torso knight with black arms and the silver breastplate print with black legs with a red belt. -A red torso knight with blue arms and the silver breastplate print with plain black legs. There are a significant number of unique or limited pieces in this set. -Knight's Challenge introduced the very first LEGO 2x2x2 barrel, seen in this set in brown as a beverage dispenser. -This is the ONLY set with the red 3x3x6 corner wall panels. -This is also the only castle set with the green round fruit tree. -The triangular blue dragon shield with yellow wings on a red background and a thick blue border is new. -The red goblet was only found in four other sets from 1986-1991 and the white goblet was only found in seven other sets from 1986-2004. -The white octagonal canopy was only found in two other space sets from 1987, 6893-1 Orion II Hyperspace and 6972-1 Polaris I Space Lab. -The yellow 1x5x4 continuous arch bow was only found in two other sets, 6074-1 / 10039-1 Black Falcon's Fortress from 1986 / 2002 and 6276-1 Eldorado Fortress from 1989. -The red horse barding with the yellow lion is only found in two other sets (6039-1 Twin Arm Launcher from 1988 and 6081-1 King's Mountain Fortress from 1990). -The blue horse barding with a black background and blue dragons is my favorite horse barding print, and it was only found in this set and two others (6085-1 Black Monarch's Castle from 1988 and 6086-1 Black Knight's Castle from 1992). Back of the box and back of the instruction manual builds for this set include a social scene, a horse saddle with sun covering, a spread out fair, and a boat. One of the issues I have with this set is that the pavilion, the beverage barrel, the jousting divider, and the arms rack are all built on different sized green baseplates. While the pavilion uses the thin style, the other three separate elements use the thick style. As this set has so many different separate elements, it makes picking it up and moving it considerably more difficult. Also, while this is a very colorful build, the Knight's Challenge doesn't really have much in the way of buildable pieces. It's still a very fun set and augments the rest of the LEGOLAND Castle System very well. Also, even though the white torso with two string red necklaces is used with the "princess cone hat" and that minifigure is sitting higher in the pavilion stands than the two knights, the minifigure is referred to as "maiden" on the inventory pages, and not as "princess" or any other title that might indicate royalty, and the "peasant" has the brown "female" hair, which indicates at least some attempts at gendering in this LEGO set. Well, after drawing 88 different skeletal characters, here it is, the full series of "A Buncha Boneheads"! I was originally going to try and sell this as a poster but after looking into it, I don't think I can do that unless I want to deal with several dozen copyright laws.

This was quite the fun little exercise for me- the biggest challenge was trying to emulate the art styles of so many different series and properties. There are definitely more skull-headed characters out there that I could add, but frankly I think a nice even 88 is good enough, and there are other projects I want to work on for the future. Overall I'm pretty proud of this.

With that said, let me know if I've made a spelling mistake or something anywhere on here- I've tried my best but I just know I missed one or two somewhere.

My entry into the @brickcentral monthly theme for April celebrating the 10 years of BC

I originally had something quite small planned for this months challenge to celebrate @brickcentral 10 year birthday! However, after a couple of days building, this MOC emerged! Inspiration came from some great fantasy artwork I found (like the below) and I really wanted to create a similar vibe.

Everything is practical with only a tiny amount of post processing. The all important candles where lit using some micro orange LEDs and they provided most of the light for the scene (a long time was spent hiding wires from the camera!). There are also two small LEDs used as ‘fill lights’ just to bring out the dragon and our brave knight a little more. Some slight haze was added with a face mister to help add to the vibe (also gave the added benefit of making the LED candles look a bit more realistic).

Safe to say, I’m am very happy to have stumbled across the @brickcentral community a couple of years ago. Without the amazing friendships made and inspiring pictures taken each month (and useful tips and hints) by the community, I don’t think I would have had the motivation to push my Lego photography forward. Happy birthday @brickcentral.

OPM webcomic chapter 142 review: Unforgivable.

Story

So after nearly two years of absence, ONE once again drops a ninja update of the webcomic on us. This is a normal-sized (15-16 pages) webcomic chapter, but we've no idea whether there are any follow-ups to come soon. Combined with the fact that this is an action-packed release with very little in the way of conversation, it's a chapter that just whizzes by in a kinetic stream of beautifully-composed action shots.

We open with the city under attack. A bird (looks like a crow) is perched on a telegraph pole. As it is startled into the air by the laser beams cutting through the building in the background, we see the building explode. The next scenes are confused voices emanating from the surrounding buildings, with people asking what is going on so early, what alarms there are, urging loved ones to get up and get out… and these voices become less coherent as the horror of the reality overtakes them.

The robots march through the city, systematically and thoroughly destroying every building, car, person, and object in sight. They miss no one and overlook nothing and they keep formation to ensure that no one gets a chance to double back and slip through their ranks. This is not an attack. It is an extermination.

Their progress is halted by a figure landing in front of them. It's Genos and the footprint he stamps into the road is apparently a challenge, a wordless declaration that none shall pass this point. He doesn't spend time posturing, but charges straight into the ranks of the robots and…

…robots start to disintegrate, some punched so hard they fly to pieces, some slashed in two, some apparently shocked. Genos mows them down so fast they appear suspended in the air, their slowly falling bodies the only indication he had ever been there. As the entirety of the division is destroyed, we finally see Genos again, walking through them in the same manner that Saitama had walked through the attacking robots the night before.

A figure appears before Genos in the dust and smoke, and he punches it, realising too late that it's Saitama. Fortunately, Saitama had adroitly dodged around him, and no harm was done. Saitama smiles slightly as he declares that Genos has become strong: the doctor's final upgrade was a success.

Genos does not acknowledge the praise, thinking briefly before suggesting that he and Saitama split up, Saitama to tackle the remaining forces in the city while he Genos goes ahead to Metal Knight's hideout. For a few moments, Saitama is silent. He slowly turns around and then waves to Genos as he starts walking off, telling Genos that he understood and the latter was to be careful.

Genos doesn't spend time looking wistfully after Saitama. If anything, the inner rage stoking him seems to flare up even hotter. He takes off (the very first time we've seen him fly in the webcomic -- anyone wishing to dispute that is confusing it with the manga) and flies off. En route, he encounters a monster nonchalantly perched on a building, playing with a truck like it's an overgrown Lego piece. Thinking that it stands to reason that Metal Knight would use monsters as biological weapons in conjunction with robots, Genos slashes at the air with his fingers, and the monster is cleaved in several places as if with a sword. Genos isn't to know it but it is Meat Dumpling and with the monster's destruction, Zaedat's murder is avenged.

Unforgiveable, Genos says to himself, as he flies off.

That's where the chapter leaves off. Shall we meta?

Meta

A: It's Needs O'Clock

I'm going to try to make this the only place I compare this with the manga. Manga readers will notice a similarity between the slashes that Genos used to dispatch Meat Dumpling and Bomb's Whirlwind Cutting Iron Fist. It can't be because of the former having observed the latter in the webcomic as Bomb never used such a move in the webcomic. It's something he (well, Kuseno) has come up with independently.

One of the things you have to accept as a webcomic reader is that characters are capable of doing things when the narrative requires that they are: there isn't time or space to go into development unless it's super-critical to the plot. If you want to see characters grind, you need to read the manga. It doesn't bother me, but it's something to note and respect.

B: A whodunit resolved

With the appearance of Meat Dumpling, an important set of troublesome coincidences ties itself up into an incriminating body of fact beyond a reasonable doubt. The fact that Meat Dumpling was out there in the middle of a robot uprising clinches it: it was sent out precisely to target Zaedats. This ties in perfectly with how Destro and Erimin were able to recover both Zaedats and Infelsinave: the monsters are under their control and of course the monsters relinquished them without a fuss (or without harming those precious heads of theirs).

Those two Neo Leaders weren't unlucky, they were the subject of hit jobs so that their resources could fall under The Organization's control.

A's total lack of surprise was also suspicious but then again, it's A: a guy without a shred of morality

Hoo, so now we know that the robot uprising and the cyborg conspiracy (and whatever fuckery is going on at the Neo Heroes) are all linked. We suspected it was because the body suits they'd been handing out to Neo Heroes looked suspiciously like modified versions of the suits Hammerhead and crew the Organization allowed them to steal. Sonic recognising those suits strengthened our suspicion.

The appearance of cybernetically modified, remotely-controlled monsters whose actions happened to benefit the Neo Heroes but not pro-heroes strengthened our suspicions still further.

With the Machine Gods (an Organization special) declaring to Genos that the day of reckoning was about to begin, we knew that The Organization was up to something big.

However, there was still a tiny bit of room for there to be another bad actor to take advantage of the situation to carry out their evil plans. With the monster appearing, there is doubt no longer: Destro, Erimin, the rampaging robots, the Machine Gods, and the Neo Heroes are all of a piece.

If someone had tried putting these pieces together, they'd have been shouted down as a swivel-eyed conspiracy theorist. But there you go: occasionally, what seems to be a shadowy, well-resourced, well-organized conspiracy to subvert justice and subjugate society IS JUST THAT.

Only just about nobody believes it…

C: Half the Reason

…except Genos and Kuseno. Genos seemed mad to a lot of readers when he first came to Saitama talking about rampaging cyborgs and the total extermination of everyone in his home town, and of shadowy enemies that were all but impossible to track down. We'd seen monsters, sure, but what was this about cyborgs? Was he making it all up? Even though we saw at least one cyborg associated with The Organization early on in the series, we had no real leads as to what was really happening, how extensive it was, and how it all fit together (well, we still don't have the last) until now.

Why would anyone in their right mind give up their human body and become a living weapon? Well, One-Punch Man has been clear that there are many reasons that people become cyborgs for, but in Genos's case we now have half the reason: because nobody wanted to believe that what had seemed a random series of attacks was part of a much greater war, and thus nobody was prepared to challenge it. This was the only way available to him to take that stand.

Something that is both observable to readers within their own lives and observable to readers within the confines of the story is that it is really difficult to kill everyone in a place. Kill at least one person? Not too bad. A few? Tougher. Many? Tougher still. Most people? That's quite the ask, even with heavy artillery. Everybody? That takes some serious planning and execution. We've noticed that monsters, for all their strength and size, are remarkably bad at killing lots of people: they can nab some people randomly and knock some buildings down, but the sort of kill numbers are far lower than one would initially expect -- if one forgets about the propensity of people to save themselves. We're not chickens stuck in a chicken coop, painfully shivering as we're grabbed one by one. The heroes are useful, yes, but damn do the monsters help by being more interested in intimidating people than killing and eating them for the most part.

Chillingly, the most economical explanation is that once the method of achieving total kills was validated, it no longer needed the human input of a cyborg and could be automated.

The difference between what monsters do and what the robots were doing is chillingly clear. Not a single person woken up early that morning survived. That's the sort of thoroughness it takes to kill everyone in a town and I praise ONE for showing this to us in such an economic manner. This scene must have been a horrible flashback to Genos's fateful day. It really takes a certain kind of mind to execute this. One thing often misunderstood in the story is the word 'bosu' -- it does not so much mean mad as it means rampaging, out of control. The mad cyborg is less mad than it does go on systematic rampages, rampages that have resulted in the total destruction of multiple towns. The only thing special about Genos's former town is that it's the last known place struck.

And his literally taking a stand to stop repeats of these exterminations is incredibly admirable.

D: Prelude to a Tragedy

However, happy as everyone is to see Genos wrecking the bots like wrecking is going out of fashion, I don't think there are many who are optimistic about what is unfolding. For it's the first act in a tragedy. A tragedy whose full impact we are surely going to see unfold over the rest of the arc, and quite possibly in many arcs to follow. Genos is going to attack Metal Knight, the latter having successfully been framed by Drive Knight. The chances that the Metal Knight who has been watching Organization operatives with such suspicion is himself the culprit is slim. However, Drive Knight gloating about how Metal Knight was blindsided by the rise of the Neo Heroes very strongly suggests that the doctor, for all his crabby, misanthropic presentation, is indeed innocent.

There's still room for reasonable doubt when it comes to Bofoi's intentions and actions, but Genos is not in the mood to listen. He's entirely fixated on killing. Whether he kills Bofoi, is killed by him, or they take each other out, the only beneficiaries are the enemies of mankind currently trying to break civilization with machines and modified biological weapons.

Perhaps Saitama should not have let Genos go alone with only the exhortation to be careful. Genos will need all his wits and all the luck he has never had to thread this particular needle without tragedy.

Good luck: the ease with which the unforgiving can become the unforgiven is truly terrifying.

Would you consider the Overdrive Sin battle in FFX to be an iteration of the Demon Wall? I always like how they remix series staples.

Oh, wow, I never thought of that, but you're right! An extreme POV version where instead of the Wall inching towards you, Wall is casting gravity magic to pull you towards it!

Although now that I think on it, there was an early iteration of Sin's overdrive, in the game that gave us Gilgamesh and the Al]chemist job class...

Atomos. It disables party members individually and drags them towards it one turn at a time.

Atomos' sprite vaguely reminds me of the FUNGAAAH! dude in FFIV that does the exact opposite, sneezing/blowing party members out of battle (kick), but that's a one-turn KO rather than a multi-turn countdown.

I'm with you: I love how if you look under the hood of Final Fantasy, you see the devs inventing some new mechanics, summons, objects, magic, etc for each game, but then mixing and matching and reusing them like favorite lego blocks to make subsequent builds.

It's unusual having a franchise where the "under the hood" design, not the world/characters, are what unifies all the games. But then, the very first FF was an attempt to make a simplified, one-player 3rd ed D&D simulator. The titles/worlds are the modules.

John would be a Prince of Doom:

Princes are the active half of the destruction class, with their counterparts being the more passive Bards. Princes tend to be self-aggrandizing and overestimate their own ability, but in their defense they are usually very skilled at their work. Princes and Bards alike spend a majority of their time inverting their aspect due to their roles as destroyers, but must learn to embrace their aspect even as they destroy it.

Doom is the aspect of death, sacrifice, rules, order, and authority. It's counterpart is Life. Doom players tend to lose the most of all the aspects due to the power of their sacrifices, and have a love of order - an interest in computer coding, following the instructions for Lego sets, or paint by color art books would be right up a Doom player's alley. Though Doom seems like a gloomy aspect, it's quite possible to be a peppy, cheerful Doom player.

A Prince of Doom would have the ability to destroy doom in the form of rules and authority, though they would also have the ability to destroy through doom, which might take the form of leading entire ghost armies. Should a Prince of Doom sacrifice themselves for the sake of their teammates, even death itself might not hold them back. Destroying death might mean they can bring themselves back to life - or they might even have more power as a ghost, destroying through death. The Prince of Doom would be a fantastic source of fighting power, and a welcome addition on any team - though like all destruction classes, teammates should keep a watchful eye to make sure they don't turn against the other players.

Gale i had to take a quiz tbh he's a TOUGHIE but I landed on Knight of Mind. The quiz gave me Thief of Mind but that was Not correct and I kept coming back to Knight

Knights hide a fear of a perceived fundamental failure with their Aspect behind a shield of confidence and obsessive effort. Their challenge is to learn to take it down a notch and to understand that they are skilled enough.

A Knight of Mind would be truly skilled at making all kinds of decisions and using their intellect, logic and reason to make effective choices. A Knight of Mind would perceive their grasp on logic and reason to be woefully incomplete though and be embarrassed of this fact, even if it were not true. They might spend all their time honing their mental skills to make rational choices and logical decisions. They are skilled at being impersonal and unbiased in their decisions, even if they fear that actually their own personally bias has sunk into to their choices. A Knight of Mind’s Heart is very much buried within themselves, for not only do they deny their inner self behind a mask, they don’t let any bit of it leak into any other aspect of their life either.

Always striving to be perfectly impartial in whatever they do. They nearly constantly think about every angle and way to every thought and decision and may spend all their time lost in the exercise of their thoughts. They might ponder on the concept of morality and justice itself and wonder on if their own morals were up to par. A Knight of Mind knows how to expertly use the thoughts they have to great advantage, and they might also use more literal symbols like glasses or coins. Maybe part of their literal disguise that they exploit includes some shades.

20240214: the History of LEGO Castle day 045. 1491-1 Dual Defender (1992, 48 pieces, 15 different parts) The Dual Defender is another catapult, built on three 2x10 green plates with black launch arms and light gray cannon balls, this is the first catapult to use a large 4x4 turn table. The two minifigures in this set are exactly the same, with dark gray helmets, blocked open stud yellow smiling face, a blue torso with printed silver scale mail and black arms, and blue legs with a black belt. They both have triangular shields with a blue dragon with yellow wings on a red background with a blue border and a dark gray sword. This catapult has a lot more power to it, in comparison to the small 1480 King's Catapult. The launching arms are actually very well balanced for the intended task and it's pretty impressive reach. I think it's sets like this which eventually motivated LEGO to put the "don't shoot this it's people's eyes" comic in future instruction manuals. I definitely was that person when I was younger who got great enjoyment out of using catapults (and the pirate cannons) to defend my room from interlopers :) This is a fun little set and I really like the blue scale mail torsos, though this torso was only found in three other sets (1584-1 / 6060-1 Knight's Challenge, 6085-1 Black Monarch's Castle, and 6018-1 Battle Dragon). Parts inventory for this set can be found at BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions is available on ToysPeriod.

Me and my bf are currently in the effort of archiving all the content of Nexo Knights, and I'm sure most of you know the situation around "Knights Of The Realm" by now

If not, "Knights Of The Realm" was a 40-minute two part special within the Merlock 2.0 app, and detailed the childhood/backstories of all the main characters and how they became friends/teammates. As for why Lego thought putting such important lore into a mobile app and, I dunno, the ACTUAL show, is beyond me --- but thats besides the point

I've emailed Lego, a customer service woman says it's not within their archives. I've also emailed the animation studio behind Nexo Knights, but they haven't gotten back to me

The only existing footage on YouTube (that we know of) comes from that of a kid aiming his phone camera at a tablet, but today I come to the fandom with a new development: an in-game recording of part 1 has been found! Hallelujah!

I think that Mateo lives school in a very negative way as we saw in other episodes so it makes sense to see him there. Cooper seems to be a bit too pressured by his parents, therefore he's in his house. As for Izzie I think she's very comfortable in a lot of places, so this is the most unreal one
