Night Rose Crew Roster, part 1

(excerpts from the personal notes of Captain Leila O’Palom, of the Night Rose. This lineup may be affected by verse, but this is the base lineup, for reference purposes.)

CAPTAIN: Chief planner of heists, strategies, and overall business plan of the ship.

STAFFED BY: Me, Leila O'Palom. Technically, I am the first captain of the Night Rose, and the only one in her history. However, we recognize the continuity of our former ship, the Fortune's Dividend, whose first captain was Charles Jaggery, formerly of the Palamecian Navy, who served in his post until he was murdered where he stood by the coward Beth Winters, whose gross misconceptions about pirate life cost a proud man his life- and hers, as well. The Dividend herself was scuttled after it was swallowed up and retrieved from the belly of the Leviathan, her salvageable parts used to construct the Night Rose- named in honor of the Wild Rose Rebellion, of which I served as acting Commander in the absence of Queen Hilda of Fynn.

STATS: Age: 25. Height: 5'5". Weight: 110 lbs. Hair: Lavender, long and wavy. Eyes: brown. Figure: Svelte and solid.

NOTES: Angus, if you're reading this, you know what has happened. The votes will tell the tale, but know that, if I am unable to serve, you have my endorsement to take my place.

QUARTERMASTER: Determines loot shares, enforces captain's orders, settles minor disputes, and issues punishments.

STAFFED BY: Angus. The day after I slit the throat of that scum-sucking bilge-rat that killed my Captain, Angus and I met on the deck of the Fortune's Dividend. Of all of us on the ship that day, the two of us were the only ones capable of taking the helm. I wanted it. I wanted it badly. But Angus needed to be sure that the little piss-mop that got dragged onto the ship seven years hence was ready for the job. So, we held a duel. Come-as-you-are, do-what-you-must, first to surrender or be knocked out loses.

I made my name bringing men twice my size to their heels. Even though he knew me better than any living soul in the world, he still couldn't keep up. In one minute, he was on the ground, my knife to his throat. Not that I had the least bit intention of opening him up, but he needed to see I meant business. Since then, he's served me with all the spirit and loyalty he gave my Captain, and this vessel depends on him every bit as much as it does me.

STATS: Age: 33. Height: 6'4". Weight: 240 lbs. Hair: Bright red, long, with a full beard. Eyes: brown. Figure: Barrel-chested.

NOTES: Recently, I did some digging to his family name, "Wallace". Turns out ol' Angus here is part of a long, long line of proud Salamandi warriors. When he was a lad of twenty, he rebelled against tradition, took his two best mates, and went off to find his fortune. I've never brought it up to him, but I'm pretty sure he's aware that I know.

STANDARD TAKE: 2 shares.

BOATSWAIN: Maintains the ship proper, inspects and manages supplies, purchases new materials, oversees all raising and dropping of sails and anchor.

STAFFED BY: Terrence. Terry and his best mate Robin joined the crew shortly before the mutiny, recruited out of a traveling circus. He was the resident strongman, though his "feats of strength" are equal parts athletic skill and showbiz trickery. Over time, as profits fell and management grew lazy, he found himself thrust into doing more and more of the managing to keep the tour going. Thus, when the Captain needed a new bosun, Terry fit the bill, in spite of hating the shit out of the work. Still, he does his best- the position pays well, and he does enjoy bossing people around.

STATS: Age: 25. Height: 6'3". Weight: 270 lbs. Hair: Blonde, in a buzz cut. Eyes: brown. Figure: Bodybuilder.

NOTES: Terry and Robin have, over the years, developed a talent for conducting very real-looking fake fights, and will often launch into a knock-down, drag-out brawl when the need for a distraction arises.

STANDARD TAKE: 1 and a half shares.

COOPER: Builds, breaks, and rebuilds wooden barrels to store food and trade goods.

STAFFED BY: Robin. Like his pal Terry, Robin spent his days in a traveling circus, performing bizarre and disgusting stunts. I've never seen a man less bothered by bile in my entire life. Thus, whenever the bilge pumps break down, he's the man to go down into the muck and get them working again. Terry successfully convinced me to write a raise for him into the latest charter. I'm not generous with these, but the man has a point- most of us fucking hate going down there. In spite of this, Robin is the laid-back type, who’s content with the simple demands of barrels and bungholes.

STATS: Age: 24. Height: 5'9". Weight: 210 lbs. Hair: Black. Short, and almost always covered by a hat. Eyes: green. Figure: Lean and lanky.

NOTES: You know that phrase, "there are no winners in a headbutt"? This man wins headbutts. Hamish can't explain it, it's like his skull is made of brick or something.

STANDARD TAKE: 1 and a half shares.

MASTER CARPENTER: Performs ship repairs, including plugging holes, resetting masts and yards, and repairing sails.

STAFFED BY: Hailey. I got my start as a plucky, undersized repair monkey, and I showed all the doubters just how useful it is to have a small girl with a little know-how, a lot of guts, and a skill in getting to those hard-to-reach places. Hailey is very much my successor in that respect, right down to the acid tongue. I'd call her my sister, except that would make some past events a little too weird.

STATS: Age: 19. Height: 5'1". Weight: 100 lbs. Hair: Seafoam green, tied in two pigtails. Eyes: Blue. Figure: Pixie-ish.

NOTES: She's keeping a dark secret. She's actually the little sister of Beth Winters, the sodden cunt who robbed the seas of my Captain. She thinks I'd murder the piss out of her if I ever found out. But, I found the bitch's notes. Hailey was supposed to either kill me or lock me up before the attack. Yet, I saw neither hide nor hair of her that night, or the day after, when I took my pound of flesh. I suppose one day I'll have to break it to her that I know. ... maybe.

STANDARD TAKE: 1 share.

CARPENTRY TEAM: Subordinates to the master carpenter, under her direct command.

#1.: Shadow ( @neko-shadow ). A feline boy we picked up in Mineral Town. Cute, fluffy, and a total smartass. His quickness and agility make me question why I never thought to recruit cat-people before now. Gets along with virtually everyone I've seen him meet. In spite of his sass, he takes orders well, and brings an infectious optimism to the crew.

STATS: Age: 18. Height: 5'3". Weight: 110 lbs. Figure: Slightly feminine. Hair: Brown, unkempt and reaching down to his neck. Ears and tail are covered in black fur. Eyes: red.

NOTES: May be the third most fuckable thing on this ship, after Graeme and myself.

The 2019 Iranian Film Festival

For a period of about five years in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, Americans had a chance to see Iranian films regularly at arthouses and festivals. That dropped off quickly, with the nation’s cinema getting reduced to Abbas Kiarostami and Jafar Panahi (if we thought about it at all.) Asghar Farhadi’s 2011 “A Separation” became the most popular Iranian film ever made, grossing seven million dollars in the U.S. and winning the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, but it didn’t open doors for his compatriots, although Farhadi himself won a second Oscar and has remained an arthouse fixture. While Mehrdad Oskouei’s documentary “Starless Dreams” ranks with the best Iranian films of the past decade, it got a minimal American release despite a lengthy tour of the international festival circuit, where it won 21 awards.

North American cities like Chicago and Toronto have ongoing annual Iranian film festivals. In New York, RogerEbert.com contributor Godfrey Cheshire and Armin Miladi, who operates the distributor Darichei Cinema and has programmed an Iranian film festival in Sydney for eight years, have launched an equivalent series at the IFC Center. It runs from January 10th to the 15th. The festival kicks off with Bahman Farmanara’s “Tale of the Sea,” and also includes his 2014 “I Want To Dance,” whose screenings were held up by Iranian censors till last year, and 1979 “Tall Shadows of the Wind”. The late Kiarostami’s shadow hangs over it. “Tale of the Sea” is dedicated to him (Farmanara produced his second feature, “The Report”).  It features Panahi’s “3 Faces,” which pays extended homage to many elements of his style, and the documentary “76 Minutes and 15 Seconds With Abbas Kiarostami,” accompanied by his final short “Take Me Home”.

Cheshire says “I'm excited about starting the festival right now because there have been new developments and talents emerging in Iranian cinema recently that I think New York cinephlles who know the films of Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Farhadi et al. will find really fascinating. In effect, a primary goal Armin and I have is to link the work of previous generations with younger talents like Mani Haghighi, Abbas Amini, Houman Seyyedi and Asghar Yousefinejad.”

In “Tale of the Sea,” Farmanara plays Taher, a writer who has just been released from a mental hospital into the care of his wife Jaleh (Motamed Arya), who wants to divorce him because he’s so difficult to live with. But for now, they live in a house on a beach, where he meets with friends, a former student turned activist (Saber Adar) and, eventually, his long-lost daughter Parvaneh (Leila Hatami.) “Tale of the Sea” establishes a somber mood with deliberate pacing, a minor-key orchestral score and Farshad Mohammadi’s muted, blue-toned cinematography. The film consists of one-on-one conversations, and for its first hour, Taher participates in all of them, although the audience learns that he’s an unreliable narrator. It may as well be divided into three acts with on-screen titles, with the final half hour developing far more storytelling momentum. “Tale of the Sea” works best when it cares more about gradually exploring Taher’s life than building a narrative out of it. Still, its echoes of Bergman and Chekhov add up to a moving reflection on aging and mortality.

Mani Haghighi’s “Pig” generated some buzz at last year’s Berlin Film Festival. Its reflexive look at filmmaking evokes a far more juvenile take on “8 ½”. While it feels distantly inspired by the way Jafar Panahi’s reputation rose after his arrest, it comes across only slightly more mature than its anti-hero, Hassan (Hasan Manjuli). He’s a 50-year-old director who has been blacklisted. His home looks like a man-cave, with a huge poster of AC/DC guitarist Angus Young on the wall, and he relies on the women on his life to stay grounded while cheating on his wife Goli (Lili Rashidi) with a beautiful actress (Hatami). The Iranian film industry is being attacked by a serial killer who decapitates directors – including “Mani Haghighi” – and carves the word “pig” on their heads.  

Aided by the great cinematographer Mahmoud Kalari, Haghighi achieves a distinctive look, using bright, stylized colors. “Pig” departs from naturalism by venturing into surreal dream sequences and gory shootings. In one especially memorable scene, Hassan nods out in a police station and imagines himself singing new lyrics to the tune of AC/DC’s “Hell’s Bells” backed by an all-female band wearing devil’s outfits. But the film mostly expresses a free-floating anxiety that doesn’t resonate when its protagonist is such a jerk. It satirizes a midlife crisis, but as hard as it tries, its attempts at wit fall flat. The potshots at social media and commentary on Iranian cinema are tepid. “Pig” works best as a character study of a man who’s never been pressed to grow up.

The premise of Abbas Amini’s “Hendi and Hormoz” could be a wallow in poverty-porn: 13-year-old Hendi  (Zohreh Eslami) marries 16-year-old Hormoz (Hamed Alipour), who can’t find legal work to support them after he gets her pregnant. However, Amini pays careful attention to the teenage couple’s surroundings: the film captures the red dust and pale green leaves of its island setting evocatively. Its look contains a desolate beauty. Hendi and Hormoz comes across as individuals, not types. Forced into an arranged marriage, they become intimate while barely knowing each other, and Eslami’s performance conveys the way her character has grown up too fast. She brings across a sense of trying to stand by Hormoz without fully understanding what he has to go through to get by in their everyday lives. Satyajit Ray’s “Pather Panchali” hangs over the film, but closer to home, Oskouei’s bleak documentaries about island life seem like an inspiration, although they’re even blunter about the pressures imposed upon women.  

Like numerous gangster films, Houman Seyyedi’s “Sheeple” suggests that crime doesn’t pay and will land you in jail, but the road to get there can be pretty exciting. As Shahin, a drug dealer who works under the thumb of his older brother Shakur (Farhad Aslani), Navid Mohammadzadeh chews the scenery, and then some. The film’s opening and closing scenes, as well as its English-language title, suggest a subtext about how power plays out that it does live up to, but through concentrating more on the pathos of family life as on the workings of the drug trade. Shahin and Shakur were raised by an opium addict, who left a permanent scar with a hot soda bottle on his forehead which he styles his hair to hide. In turn, Shahin takes his anger out on his sister Mona (Marjan Etefaghian.) He disapproves of her job as a hair stylist and really goes postal when a video of her sitting in a car with a man and taking off her scarf to show him her ponytail winds up on-line. The film obviously gets a kick out of Shahin’s macho posturing, as does Mohammadzadeh. It stages a few stylized and bloody action scenes. However, by the time the film ends, he seems like a thirty-year-old boy whose rage is expressed constantly but gets him nowhere: the consequences of his actions are definitely felt. “Sheeple” synthesizes tropes derived from American genre cinema with an anger and urgency reminiscent of the films Makhmalbaf made in the late ‘80s.

Reflection on the Philippine Presidents

15th President of the Republic of the Philippines

In the Philippines, the name Aquino is prominent across the country because of their involvement in politics. The political dynasty of the Aquinos all started with former senator, general and father, Benigno Aquino Jr. who served in the Malolos Congress and fought against the Spaniards during the Philippine Revolution. However, years later, during the Marcos regime, he was unfortunately assassinated. Thus, came the beginning of his family’s governing.

His wife, Corazon Aquino ran for president upon his death and won against the infamous leadership of Ferdinand Marcos. She rose to power in order to continue the legacy of her husband. Her reign lasted six years and she was known as the “Mother of Asian Democracy”—as she put strong emphasis on liberty, human rights and social justice. Fast forward, the name Aquino became sonorous again when Benigno Noynoy Aquino III followed the steps of his parents  in the world of politics.

Noynoy Aquino became the president of the Philippines and served for six years during his administration from the year 2010 to 2016. It was in his platform to form a Social Contract with the Filipino People that addresses the problems of the society in corruption, economy, poverty, peace and order, injustices for the overseas Filipino workers, and the environment. Moreover, during his administration,  the gross domestic product of the country was recorded the highest in Philippine history.

Furthermore, Noynoy Aquino followed a recurring motto during his reign, “Kayo ang boss ko.” With that in mind, he created the no “wang-wang” (street siren) policy reducing the noise pollution especially in Manila. He appointed statesman Jesse Robredo to serve as secretary of Interior and Local Government in 2010, where Robredo served until his death in 2012. In the realm of education, he initiated K-12 education in the Philippines. He renamed the Office of the Press Secretary to Presidential Communications Operations Office and appointed new officers. Inspired by his saying, “Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap”, he suspended allowances and bonuses to Government Owned and Controlled Corporation and Government Financial Institution board members. Additionally, Noynoy Aquino oversaw 7.1% growth of the Philippine economy in 2012.

Although, some beg to differ about his performance. His administration had both its pros and cons. For one, the fact that he was given the position based from his family’s background became an issue in politics. Such speculation that Pnoy was only elected due to his family’s famous power, contributions, and wealth. In addition, Pnoy was unable to reach the expectations of the society. In terms of sustainability projects; he didn’t maximize his potential in helping the people with urgent need of care. His inability to act as a leader during times of crisis are huge failures for Pnoy and his administration. Examples would be the Quirino Bus tragedy, the Metro Rail Transit/Light Rail Transit (MRT/LRT) problems, his ineffective actions in Tacloban, the SAF 44 debacle, the Lumad killings and the Kidapawan massacre. Until now, people affected by the Typhoon Yolanda have not yet fully recovered. He failed to pass both the Basic Bangsamoro Law (BBL) and the Freedom of Information bill (FOI).

With that, Pnoy was disliked by plenty because of his lacking efforts in attaining his administration’s goals. He was seen as a President that rather played it safe and not decide by his own. As observed by many, he kept finger pointing to the Arroyo administration for all the ills of the country. In addition, after he left the office, many scandals came into light. His cabinet was full with corrupt senators like Leila de Lima on drugs and Proceso Alcala with corruption. It was during his regime that the illegal use of public funds through the “pork barrel system” was prominent. These anomalies brought the people back again to the streets to rally against Pnoy and his administration.

On the other hand, such cons aside, we cannot say that he wasn’t as successful as other Presidents of the Philippines because of this occurrence. Though his administration was credited with the highest rise in the country’s economic profile, many observers One of his proposed ideas for Education in the Philippines was the K to 12 project. This project gave an impact to students as they were entering a new curriculum that was introduced by the Americans. Also, it signifies global education which is an important aspect for Filipinos who plan to go overseas to work or to study. The K to 12 curriculum is being utilized as of this day and it has been a great  support to those Filipinos that are unable to finish secondary education due to the lack of assets. Furthermore, it did not only help Filipinos in the country but also to those who wish to continue their studies overseas that can help their studies and master’s degrees. Moreover, he also invested in many public works. There were widening of roads and the rise in skyways and urban developments such as BGC and Ortigas Center.

To end his presidency, Pnoy achieved his greatest victory. With just a few weeks before Mary Jane Veloso’s execution, he managed to save the overseas Filipino worker. She was sentenced to be executed on April 29, 2015 and had been incarcerated in Indonesia for 5 years.

If there’s anything unique about PNoy from the rest of the presidents, it would be that he was the first president to be elected as a bachelor. In addition to that, since he is single and unmarried from the time he assumed presidency, he is also one of the few who chose to spend his five and a half years at Bahay na Pangarap, rather than live in Malacañang, a place that serves as the legal domicile for presidents. There isn’t much difference between President Noynoy Aquino and the rest of the former presidents. He, like others also faced criticisms during and after his term.

This presidency proved that a well-established PR campaign is essential for the reason that even if he was a poor legislator, he was able to won the election due to the sympathy votes from the passing away of Cory Aquino. With that, the President himself may need adjustments such as his public relation skills. Despite all the criticisms thrown at the Aquino Administration, President Pnoy has done well in achieving  much of his campaign commitments.There are some platforms and programs that is worth mentioning. As a case in point, during his administration our country’s economic profile was credited as the highest rise among other former presidents. He may have done commendable things to improve our economy and yet it is evident that those improvements weren’t sufficient enough to fulfill the needs of our fellow Filipinos.

In conclusion, it is safe to say that President Noynoy Aquino wasn’t so bad nor good after all, since there is no such thing as a perfect president. Therefore, as citizens of this country it is important for us to ensure that we vote wisely for a candidate that doesn’t only have the potential but also have the desire to help the Filipinos. It is important to see each candidate from all sides before we make a choice. We should also put in mind before we criticize that six years is not enough to ease the worsened situation in our country and lastly, if we really want to see some progress to be made, we should start an initiative of change within ourselves. Just like what Mahatma Gandhi said, “ Be the change you want to see in the world. If you want to see an end to corruption, start by being scrupulously honest with yourself, and if you want to see peace in the world, start within your family”
