One year ago today, Resident Evil Welcome to Raccoon City was released
Oh, my… already a year since its premiere. Definitely loved by few —maybe, I don't know — hated by many, I must say that this film is the only English-language RE Live-Action product I really appreciate. (Japan Stage are part of RE Game's canon, and I love them). Months ago I did too honest a review about this film, — Esp & Eng — but recently, I watched it again, and I looked at it with fresh eyes. The opinion I did hasn’t changed a lot, but rewatching it, I revalued the film a lot more.
Welcome to Raccoon City has a sad story behind it. Too many budget problems and a disinterested production house. The attempt to make this a wonderful product was overshadowed. Sadly, we as a fandom attacked the wrong people in this film. I hope we could see a sequel and there is redemption — although their odds are 50/50 — because they have a lot of potential and Code Veronica was their mayor interest for a sequel.
Presently, I have a feeling this film will become a cult film, for whatever reasons you want, but mainly for being the first — or only — product to take Resident Evil in spirit.

OC Name Meanings
I wasn't tagged, but I saw this come across my dash and I really want to do it ( I have OC mania/brainrot, and I am not sorry)
Rules: Google and post the meaning of your OC’s name (if you made their name up or they go by a nickname, post an explanation of how it came to you)! bonus if you can find something for their last name too
Tagging: Literally ANYONE that wants to do it - everyone deserves a chance to rant (I know it's less of a "game" that way, but we all deserve some fun!) I WILL directly call out @rishamonkey and @apriltastic tho <3
Neri (Dekarios, after she marries Gale): Pronounced nair-ee, rhymes with Mary. (Hebrew: נֵרִי) (lit. "my candle/lamp") is a unisex given name mainly used in Israel. It's derived from "Ner" which means candle in Hebrew. It is a variant form of "Neriya",[1] meaning "Yah (יהו/יה) is my candle (נֵרִי)".
I actually didn't know this meaning (I came across the name one day when I was researching for work and I loved it), but it fits SO WELL for her character both in Curse of Strahd and BG3. Like, if I didn't know that I HADN'T planned that, that would feel VERY planned.
Dighnilah Khayali: Pronounced deny-la kai-yah-lee. Dighnilah I made up. I've always been a language lover/linguist at heart, and language learning and foreign languages were my focus of study in college. It's one of the few things I'm naturally good with, and I also experience ASMR, so the way words sound hold special meaning on their own for me. That's how I came up with Dighnilah - purely by sound. I liked how it sounded and felt in my mouth (lol). If I were to make up a definition/meaning it would be something like "Unbridled elegance."
Khayali: Originating from Indian and Bengali languages, Khayali is a lovely girl’s name that means “a woman lost in her own wonderland.”
Riza (no known surname): Pronounced ree-zah. As an Indonesian and Albanian name, Riza comes from the Arabic name Ridha (رضا), which means 'satisfaction' or 'contentment.' I didn't choose this name based on meaning, either, but once again by sound. However, since I didn't make this one up and it is a real name, I had to look up the meaning. And, hey, it also really works for her character! Am I . . . intuitive about name meanings based on sound? (jk, I wish I were that powerful).
Leone Trevelyan: Pronounced lee-own. Meaning "lion." Leone is a gender-neutral name of Latin origin. I didn't choose based on meaning (I'm clearly bad at that, huh?) but rather it is the name of a sibling of one of my grandpas (great aunt?) that I always loved the sound of. Plus the one time I visited her she made me pie and pie is my favorite, so fond memories all around. I also liked how it flowed with the default "Trevelyan" name of a human MC in DAI.
However, considering she romances Cullen, the whole "lion" thing, once again, fits XD
Margu Amell: Pronounced mar-goo. Meaning "name of a goddess." Derived from Hindu (though there are MANY cultures and languaged that use this name). Although this is my DAO mage warden's name, I actually most recently (and in the first place) used it for the Touchstarved demo, in which MC has no known surname. And given that THAT character has the "Fallen Oracle" background the name is once again incredibly suited!

I actually really love Robbie Amell and Kaya Scodelario as Chris and Claire Redfield - Amell looks a lot like what I'd expect S.T.A.R.S era Chris to look like, while Scodelario bears a striking resemblance to Remake Claire (not an exact copy, but enough to give a Claire vibe). At the same time, I love the liberties they took with Leon and Jill's casting. Avan Jogia brings a different (in a good way) vibe to Leon while Hannah John-Kamen is a nice take on Jill in terms of looks.

my Surana & Amell (plus some other folks)
In one timeline, Surana’s Harrowing goes badly and Amell gets through his and becomes a warden. In another, the opposite happens.
And in every other timeline, they both die and Duncan finds a recruit elsewhere.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City Review
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is written and directed by Johannes Roberts. The film stars Kaya Scodelario, Hannah John-Kamen, Robbie Amell, Tom Hooper, Avan Jogia, Donal Logue, and Neal McDonough. This film is based on the Resident Evil games and this iteration adapts and combines elements from the first two games. The story follows favorite characters Chris and Claire Redifeld (Scodelario & Amell), Jill Valentine (Kamen), Leon Kennedy (Jogia) and Albert Wesker (Hooper) as they all explore and investigate different parts of Raccoon City the night the T-Virus is released. This film is what the previous films should have been. Welcome to Raccoon City captures the spirit of these early games by creating a new story with the characters we love from this beloved property.
I felt every member of the cast did a good job capturing the spirit of their respective characters. I enjoyed the performances from just about everyone and liked seeing certain characters that don’t share a lot of time together in the games share screen time with one another here. After watching this film I hope that these actors can possibly return again in future installments as these characters. I commend director Johannes Roberts for making this film feel more atmospheric and less about the action, it feels more grounded than what had come before. The tension and build up is there, the scares feel genuine, and the creature effects for the most part work. It’s clear this film was made with a love and appreciation for the games as that shows in just about every aspect of this film.
Now I’m not entirely sure if average audiences who aren’t familiar with the games will enjoy this. There are some pacing, story aspects, and character development that may bother and deter some people’s enjoyment of it. As I’m writing this I’m speaking as a fan of these games and finally getting to see a live action film that for the most part worked and came together is satisfying. It’s fun, silly, campy, and feels like it was made in the era that this film takes place in and knows what it’s shooting for. I went in with low expectations given what I saw in the trailer and came out feeling like this was what I wanted in a Resident Evil film. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is a fresh and welcome reboot of the game franchise that will hopefully satisfy fans of the games and possibly bring in a new set of fans after watching the film.

So it looks like “Resident Evil: Welcome to Racooon City” is a reimagining of the first two games. They’re both happening at the same time, so the story is different to reflect that change. For example, Claire Redfield is in Raccoon City because she’s investigating Umbrella instead of looking for Chris. The movie is basically going the “Walking Dead” route where they’re using the games as a template rather than just straight up adapting the original story.
And yet...the movie still looks like a more faithful adaptation than the Paul W.S. Anderson series lol. Like, Robbie Amell and Kaya Scodelario actually look like Raccoon City-era Chris and Claire, respectively.
So I’m cautiously optimistic. We’ll see next month.

Reply to this or message me if you would be interested in being in a discord group that is specifically positive about Welcome to Raccoon City. I loved it and I wanna fan girl over it, but the fandom is soooooo divisive over it that this can be difficult. So I’m taking the advice of a friend and attempting to make my own discord server like they did in a different fandom. All ships would be welcome! So yeah, reply or message me if you would be interested!
