Halloween 2022 - Day 3 - Rabid (2019)

I hope this one works out because the last Canadian thing called Rabid didn’t age that well...

Erm, excuse me, I think I’ll be the judge of that...

Oooh boy, it’s the other CM Punk movie. I say other, it would have been other at the time I watched Girl on the Third Floor back in 2020 but he’s since added to that with 2021’s Jakob’s Wife, another horror movie. I’ll just make a note of that here for future reference...

And I say ‘ooh boy’ not out of some dread for what I have ahead of me but for the way so much has changed in just two years since I looked at GotTF. By that point he was already on the outs with the UFC after his two defeats (or 1 defeat and 1 no contest as it apparently is now) so acting seemed like another string to add to his bow after wrestling, TV personality, writer, commentator etc etc. But on August 20th 2021 everything changed when the familiar sound of ‘Cult of Personality’ began to blast throughout the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, marking Punk’s return to professional wrestling for the first time in seven years. I do love the idea that, following this, he notified UFC that he had retired. What was that Chris Rock joke about boycotting Rihana’s panties again?

Everything seemed to be coming up aces, especially after a much loved feud with MJF and Punk’s coronation as AEW Champion at Double or Nothing in May of this year. But what should have been his crowning achievement seems to have been the start of his downfall, an injury only days later would put him out of action until August, at which point he returned only to lose to title to Jon Moxley. Then, following their rematch at All Out on September 4th, all hell seemed to break loose backstage after some questionable comments made by Punk in the post show media scrum, with reports of a fist fight between Punk and fellow AEW stars Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks. Everyone involved was stripped of their titles and we would come to learn that Punk had suffered an injury during the show and was projected to be out for another 8 months. Following that fracas though, there are question marks over whether AEW would even take him back. Maybe it’ll be time to dust off the old SAG membership...

Which brings us to the subject of today; Rabid. And we’re not just talking about what Kenny Omega might be after Ace Steel bit him. I might as well get Punk’s part out of the way early because it really is a bit of a blink and you’ll miss it cameo, though he does return briefly later on the in the movie. It’s a totally believe bit of casting though as he plays an abrasive douchebag that gets kicked out of a nightclub before running into our leading lady, Rose, played by Laura Vandervoort, who looks very much like Charlize Theron. Maybe Theron mixed with Elizabeth Olsen.

Loving the glittery shirt they’ve got him dressed in, don’t think I could ever imagine Punk wearing such a thing. But in his few minutes, he manages to pick a fight with two bouncers way bigger than him, get the cold shoulder from some random woman and then proceeds to spend what feels like way too long just following her down the street to chew her out and tell her that she’s not even that hot anyway. Ah, the last refuge of the rejected man, or does that only come when you says she’s probably a lesbian anyway? And hey, even his missus April Mendez AKA AJ Lee managed to get herself in on the action too!

As for the story as a whole, Rose is an aspiring fashionista totally bereft of confidence due to some disfiguring scares that came by way of a car accident that killed her parents. Between being orphaned at a young age and being left with a permanent reminders of it, that’s gonna do a number on your psyche. She gets asked out by one of her co-workers, something we come to learn isn’t 100% on the up and up, so with her general mousey demeanor and the coerced nature of his proposal, I was kinda getting Carrie vibes about the whole situation. Which does fit slightly with some moments that come up later on...

After learning the truth, Rose storms out but ends up driving his scooter straight into oncoming traffic leaving her even more disfigured but luckily there’s an experimental clinic that wants to help her so they can develop their bleeding edge techniques. Only, there does seem to be some side effects in play...

Like the odd cravings. Mmmmm, you can really taste the botulism! The movie does go out of it’s way to show Rose’s usual vegetarian diet so it’s definitely strange to see her suddenly rip open a steak and just go at it.

What I had forgotten from my brief research on this film after watching Girl... was that it’s a remake of a David Cronenberg movie. Probably for the best that I only re-learnt this as the movie started because I might have had second thoughts otherwise since I don’t normally get on the best with that type of movie and I’d usually shy away from jumping straight to a remake. Still, you can definitely see the connection, albeit quite far into the movie.  And it seems to just remember it out of the blue and then instantly shifts into body horror mode. It’s a bit jarring to have this very sudden shift in tone. Otherwise they’re kinda going for this ‘is it all in her head’ thing which I never really got absorbed into. Maybe because it’s fairly obvious there’s something shady going on, I know all about these so called ‘experimental procedures’, I’ve seen Body Bags.

Plus it’s hard not to come off a little sus when the surgeon comes out for the operation like he’s one of the Emperors Royal Guard. I mean, I guess you’re gonna get blood on your scrubs anyway so you might as well make them red...

That guy actually threw me a little bit at first because I thought it was William Atherton, he of Walter Peck and Dick Thornburg fame. But no, it’s just the coincidentally named Ted Atherton who is apparently of no relation but of passing resemblance.

It’s a very Canadian affair here, with Ted being a native along with several of his co-stars and they all seem to have starred in either Degrassi, various adaptations of XIII or both. I know Degrassi is a big thing over there so it’s probably just a right of passage for any Canadian actor that you’re going to end up in that thing at some point.

As the name of the film suggests, the theme of rabies comes up and it’s a little eerie given that the movie came out in late 2019 that it heavily features talks of the CDC, quarantines, public health crises and has rampant face mask wearing.

Overall, the movie did enough to keep me intrigued throughout to see where it was going but, kinda like with Hocus Pocus 2 yesterday, I’m a little underwhelmed with the ending. I’m normally all for a ‘questionable sanity’ type movie but I guess it didn’t really build up to it enough to make it questionable, it just kinda jumped straight to 11. Where Rose’s reconstructive surgery has her prettier and more outgoing than ever, maybe she’d have flashbacks or visions of her old scars that make her pull away from this sudden social contact and in that isolation is where the demons start to come in.

It’s a decent enough movie but I imagine there’s probably a lot more notable examples in the body horror genre that you’d want to get to before this one. At least it has the novelty of seeing Punk. That’s something these Soska sisters have pedigree for is the ol’ wrestler movie. They did See No Evil 2 after all and did Vendetta the year after which has a real ‘main event in any town’ poster to it.

top three ships: currently, Kenny Omega/Kota Ibushi is my top fave! it’s not often that a single ship gets me into an entire new medium! besides that, i recently got back on a bit of a Finn/Poe kick. and i’m still recovering from my favorite TJPW tag team, Misao/Sakisama, falling apart.

last movie: Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), which was a decent movie, but it had a lot sadder ending than i’d hoped for, rip. i appreciated that there was almost zero men in the movie at all, and the film was objectively good, but the lesbian love story felt wanting to me.

lipstick or chapstick: i’ll be honest, i don’t often wear either! i think i like them equally as well. i only wear chapstick when i get very desperate, and i only wear lipstick on rare occasions.

watching: wrestling. so much wrestling. i’ve barely watched any other type of content for the past eight months or so, and honestly i’ve been having a great time! it’s taken me on quite the emotional roller coaster! if you’re curious what i’ve been watching/enjoying, i’ve put together lists of my favorite wrestling things from 2019, as well as so far in 2020.

reading: most of what i’ve read lately has actually been wrestling nonfiction! my newest acquisition is The World of Lucha Libre: Secrets, Revelations, and Mexican National Identity by Heather Levi (thanks for the rec, Seb!), which is a really fascinating study of lucha libre.

playing: i haven’t played a lot of video games lately, even though i finally have free time again. i’ve just been too busy with other content (wrestling). the last game that i really played was Stardew Valley.

U - 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms

1. Keith from Voltron: Legendary Defender. (The fandom’s largely agreed on the last name Kogane for him, but I’m pretty committed to the theory that his dad is James Hawkins. Canon hasn’t given him a surname and they’ve been very cagey about his ethnicity/race, even though they’ve given pretty much everyone else one.)

2. Johan Andersen from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (He’s gayer than the rainbow deck he plays, he’s from Norway or Sweden, and I’m very dedicated to the ironic headcanon of him being completely colorblind.)

3. Irene Adler from Sherlock. (Well, technically from the source material, but I’ve enjoyed most other portrayals of her. The first time I’ve ever felt “Yas Queen” in my very bones.)

4. Asami Sato from The Legend of Korra. (The girl went through so much shit but never let it drag her down which is honestly goals. Plus she got herself one heck of a happy ending.)

5. Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls. (I greatly enjoy characters who give no fucks whatsoever and have the good grace to be the smartest, most ethically amoral asshole in the room with a twisted sense of humor. Bill was hilarious and I kind of wished we’d seen more of him throughout the show.)

V - 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms

1. Klance/Laith. They’ve got so much chemistry watching their interactions in the show has my gaydar going nuts. (Plus the showrunners have been pretty heavy handed in hinting that this one could end up canon, and while I’m wary of being queerbaited again, you’re not gonna catch that stopping my gay ass.)

2. Ruby/Sapphire (Garnet). They’re canon, they’re lesbians, and they’re adorable. What more can a girl ask for? I haven’t seen their most recent episode and I want to so badly because I know there are good things going on there.

3. Korrasami. Personally I preferred this ship way back when the show was trying to keep Mako as the main romantic interest. The interactions felt way more natural and once these two became friends they became a really great team. Plus they ended up as canon, even if it was only in like, the last thirty seconds of the series finale, but I’ll take what I can get.

W - 5 favorite ships and 5 kinks you like best for said ships

1. Klance/Laith. Top five kinks…uh…I really like these two in an A/B/O setting, almost exclusively with Omega!Keith and Alpha!Lance. Praise kink is a big one, too. Size kink, also, for both of them (although maybe for Lance more than for Keith), and also xenophilia. Keith’s part alien and that’s something the fandom has loved to work with. And I’m not really sure if it counts as an actual kink, but, like, very sweet, very vanilla, missionary position sex where it’s more about making each other feel good than it is about getting off.

2. Creek. Size kink on Craig’s part, definitely. Tweek’s got a thing for dirty talk, and he’s good at it. Soft BDSM would be a good one for these two; nothing much more extreme than tying each other up, but that’s definitely something they like. Tweek’s also got a scent kink, and nothing turns him on more than how Craig smells after a good work out. And Craig’s got a thing for being ordered around in the bedroom.

3. Korrasami. Body worship. So much of it. Also cunnilingus; Asami strikes me as the type to thoroughly enjoy turning her partner into a quivering, desperate mess. Toys is also one, though I’m not sure if that counts as an actual kink? Maybe some forays into mild BDSM, since Korra seems to be the blitz sort. Edging would probably be a thing for them, too.

4. Style. Kyle gets off on giving orders, Stan gets off on taking orders. Kyle being a size queen is A+ stuff. I think Kyle and Stan would really enjoy edging; Kyle has fun pushing Stan to the brink and dragging him back until he’s sobbing for relief and once Kyle finally lets him cum Stan usually has the best orgasms of his life, so it all works out. I really love the concept of A/B/O fics, mainly because I love toying with world building and trying to create a world in which this system works and makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint is fun as hell for me. Plus it’s a really good way to highlight how shitty sexism is since it involves turning patriarchy around a bit and typically you’ve got these male characters (some of whom are pretty badass in the source material) dealing with the levels of bullshit women have been dealing with for millennia. But it’s also kind of tricky, since the whole point of A/B/O (in my opinion, at least) is to subvert heteronormative and sexist readings by presenting a feminist perspective through a vehicle Straight White Men might be able to understand. (“When men are oppressed, it’s a tragedy. When women are oppressed, it’s tradition.”) And some writers…just don’t do that. They only focus on the possibility of babies and end up stuffing the Omega into that heteronormative, sexist perception of what it means to be a childbearing member of society.

I love it when the writer builds up a world that has a lot of the problems and issues we see in ours: a long history of bullshit ‘science’ that claims women/Omegas are weak or stupid or incapable of anything but being a wife and mother; microaggressions ranging from period/heat jokes to casual threats of rape and sexual violence written off as “just a joke”; women/Omegas living by ‘rape schedules’ whether they know it or not; political issues like equal pay for equal work, abortion, and women’s rights in general. Like, it’s not supposed to just be “Oh, my favorite gay couple can have babies!” Granted, that’s definitely a fun part of it, but I’d like to see more of the world building aspects.

Yesterday was difficult for me. I blew up on mom and my brother. Because I was low on medication. Every fan assumed Kenny Omega was dating Hikaru Shida. But it turns out Hikaru Shida is dating the NFL cheerleader Keiko Honda. I found this out by accident when I discovered that my instagram was back up despite deleting it last night. I suspected Hikaru was a lesbian. A gut instinct that had the thought running through my head.

I went through the comments of the post.

Someone said Keiko called it a date and there were pictures that pretty much confirmed it. On Keiko's instagram and twitter. I got the idea from the guy who said he saw it being called a date on Keiko's social media.

This is why I hate bipolar. This is why I talked yesterday about killing myself. My mom asked me if I even valued my life. A stupid question given my mom has defined herself by her relationships. And her own issues with bipolar.

I told her I didn't value my life. I watched helplessly as my father died from COPD. My writing has been going on since my twenties and while I have come close a few times -- I let my bipolar sabotage me.

Hikaru means a lot to me but I realize she will only ever be a mentor figure even though she has had no direct connection with me. We have never spoken once.

Today, I've just been trying to process things. I know I have the power to change things. That I can make my goal of earning money from my short stories through adaptions in other media. So I could worry less about where I am going to lay my head. But I think I have given up on my deepest wish. To have what my father and mother had. What my cousin and his wife have. That love where you have such a bond that you just know what the other is thinking without saying it.

My brother says we are cursed to never have that. Because our bipolar makes us obsess. It affects our judgement. Not to where we are dangerous to anyone. No, to the point we will drive ourselves crazy due to anxiety and depression. So he swore off love.

I'm getting to the point where I'm going to say fuck it. The truth is the diamond in the rough doesn't get the princess. Aladdin is just a bunch of feel good bullshit. I fell for it when I was a kid, and stupidly kept searching for my princess like a dumb ass. Writing is all I have now. That and my brother and mom.

I have to think about Warts and All -- I don't think it should have a happy ending like Aladdin did.

PSA: A Lola Hayden does not exist. It’s a scammer named Ashley Hoff.

I know all of you probably know me for being in a relationship with Lola aka heroinkilledtherockstar aka taintedinsin aka dreamvein. That was true for a while but I found out a lot of things that made me question my relationship with her, and thus it is important for me to let all of you know that there’s someone that’s trying to abuse you by becoming close to you. All the photos this girl “Lola” posted, were nothing but some stolen photos by some other girl whom I don’t know. This person even had videos of this “Lola” and posted them or sent them online. That person in the photos is NOT the same person that posted everything on here under the URLs listed above.

The girl behind those posts and the facade of “Lola Hayden”(known as heroinkilledtherockstar) is Ashley Hoff. Someone we also knew through blogs like rockandrollvalentine and her “secret” personal one normalyouwere. She was supposed to be Lola’s financially poor cousin. 

I will break the story down for those who don’t know, so most people can have an idea of what this girl is about.

The Lola Hayden Character (HOW LOLA WAS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE)

Ashley seems to have created this persona or character prior to 2008. Lola was described as being someone with money, someone with a lot of knowledge regarding plenty subjects (music, social media, politics, etc.). You could say she was presented as a know-it-all. She rose to fame on Tumblr by talking about certain bands and sharing “small known facts” (most possibly lies) about certain celebrities. On the internet, she presented a personality that showed she was caring, friendly and overall nice to strangers; a huge part of her whole persona was that she struggled with eating disorders, substance abuse, bullying while at school and most recently homophobia because she came out as a lesbian while “dating” me. 

To “close friends” she often seemed as though she was someone you could trust, and certainly, she tried to manipulate you into believing she truly cared about what you had to say, only to later on use this to manipulate you and abuse you emotionally and psychologically. She often shared details of her family, going on to say she had several brothers: Derryck, Jake, Corban and Ayden --her so called twin brother that killed himself when he was 16. She claimed her father was Chris Hayden and that his worked involved doing PR for celebrities and had graduated Yale. Jake was allegedly a surgeon, Derryck was supposed to test video games and Corban just lived off the family’s wealth. 

She also claimed to have lived in Tampa, FL, then moved to Toronto, Canada only to live for a bit at The Catskills, NY and move on to NYC itself. The truth? She had lived in Jersey City, New Jersey all this time. 

Now that there’s an idea as to who she is, let’s move on to the actual person: Ashley Hoff.

ASHLEY HOFF. (THIS IS HOW SHE LOOKS LIKE) - HER MOTHER BARBARA HOFF IS ALSO A SCAMMER. HERE’S HOW SHE LOOKS

There’s a lot of things we don’t know about her. From what we understand, she is a white-looking black woman (her mother is supposed to be black) and lives in Jersey City, New Jersey. She has been pretending to be this Lola Hayden character for several years now. This person went on to create several fake Facebook accounts to try and make people believe that she had several friends there (especially ones that were related to the wrestling industry; again, this girl is OBSESSED with celebrities). She even went on to create a FaceTime screenshot of her and known wrestler Sami Zayn. She then claimed to have been in a relationship with another famous wrestler Kenny Omega.

I know all of this sounds like it should be easy to figure it out, and even though most of us had suspicions one way or another, the reality is that she is very clever and well spoken when talking about these “stories” that are just actually well-elaborated lies. Several websites regarding catfishing (because that’s what she did, basically) talk about how the abusers use sad or traumatic stories to generate a sense of empathy around this person, and that’s what both Ashley and “Lola” claimed to have. Both suffered either biphobia or homophobia as Lola was presented to be a lesbian, that she had lost her twin brother due to suicide, had committed several suicide attempts, eating disorders, you name it. Ashley claimed she was half black, had lost her father due to alcoholism, was poor, had eating disorders and depression.

Several people and I have gathered information as the scamming included even family members that she stole money from by pretending to be in need of it. To close friends that she had created online, she presented herself as caring and loving while emotionally manipulating us and abusing us psychologically. This is a person that craves control over other people and needs to be able to create lies that are bigger than her because she has low self esteem.

I urge all of you that had ever had any type of encounter with Lola Hayden and/or Ashley hoff TO PLEASE report her on the FBI Internet Crimes section listed here. 

You can enter the complaint by talking about the victims (me or someone you know, or even yourself) and mention how this person abused you. The fact that she pretended to be someone else while trying to seem caring to you is crime enough and punishable by the law. We need as much complaints as we can get so this is taken seriously. We have also approached local law enforcement offices to pursue this case and we’ll update as we see continue to gather more information.

At the risk of posting information and having this blog/post be deleted, I am going to post the information needed for the complaint, or just so you are aware of who she is, I will make two post for the photos and the information. This person has spent almost ten years of her life with her mother (she’s her partner in crime) creating false personalities, only sticking with Lola Hayden as she rose to fame in 2010-2011. If we get this post to be viral or at the very least popular within our circle, she won’t be able to come back or deflect this.

I REPEAT: PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO CONTACT THEM. Ashley Hoff particularly has ripped off HER OWN FAMILY MEMBERS for up to $7000. She has multiple secret accounts on Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and even Flickr, from where she steals other people’s photos. The main give away that she is trying to catfish someone is the fact that 1) she will refuse to videochat with you and come up with really weird excuses about it. It may seem factual but they aren’t. 2) she may have a group of “friends” that will also remain anonymous or share very little information or have no personal photos. 3) she will try to empathize with you by opening up about certain “traumatic” instances on her life. Please do not believe anything she says.
