Fun Fact
BuzzFeed published a report claiming that Tumblr was utilized as a distribution channel for Russian agents to influence American voting habits during the 2016 presidential election in Feb 2018.
Now that I’ve seen Liam Tamne play a formidable eccentric antihero (Ramses II, Prince of Egypt), I am dying for him to make the Raoul->Erik upgrade. It’s been about ten years since his West End Phantom days, so it’s about time!
(His voice-throwing skills are also too good not to use for this sort of thing)
sometimes i'll just be minding my own business and then a piece of a song from the prince of egypt west end recording will start playing in my brain and i just have to keep going like my brain hasn't just instantaneously fizzled into mush and evaporated
Why did they give Joe a wig though? Is that normal for Phantom?
Most Raouls wear their own hair, unless their hair is not long enough for the standard-ish "swoopy romantic side part" Raoul style. So that means that even though the design and Steve Barton had straight-ish blond hair, there have been ginger/auburn, dark haired, curly-haired, and even touch of grey haired Raouls. Because the majority of the time, they do wear their own hair, but maybe have fake sideburns, although some like Jordan Donica and Tomas Ambt Kofod grow their own. But some Raouls have been bald or balding or had greying hair or I think David Shannon had cornrows at one point 🙄, so the wigs department gave those actors a wig.
Joe Griffiths-Brown has a more modern undercut style of hair IRL right now, so that's probably why they gave him a wig.
But for completeness, there have been 6 black Raouls (Liam Tamne, Jordan Donica, Jemal Felix, Callum Francis, Lewis Francis and now Joe Griffiths-Brown) and about half of them have worn wigs.
AFAIK Liam Tamne (London 2014-2015) wore his own hair but I would have to go really digging through his Instagram/Twitter to find pictures of him in his "civilian life" besides that tiny blurry one from almost a decade ago.
Jordan Donica didn't wear a wig for either his 2016 run (left) or his 2022 run (center and right). Which led to him becoming the first replica Raoul with a ponytail.
Jemal Felix wore a wig as an understudy from 2021-2022 (first pic was from a dress rehearsal)
And in the non replica Australian Sydney Harbor production, Callum Francis and Lewis Francis both wore wigs with a very dramatic side part. But when Lewis Francis continued as an understudy in the Australian restaged tour, he wore his own hair and not a wig.
and i'm not even covering the old raoul wigs that they all wear. i know jordan donica didn't have an old raoul wig that matched his natural texture in his first run, lewis francis did have in the restaged tour, and i've typed all i can about raoul wigs and all i can hear is this song
Who's your favourite character from each musical you like?
Aight lads buckle up, this is a question with a pretty long answer:
Starlight Express: Tied between Pearl and Flat-Top, I honestly cannot pick between them. I love Pearl's designs, songs and storyline, and whilst it's sadly been lost over time I love Flat-Top's origins in English punk culture (and his mini character arc too!)
Newsies: Crutchie. Aside from just how fun of a character he is, I found myself in a very similar situation to him not long after getting into the show, so he means a lot to me.
Tuck Everlasting: Miles. His story is... fucking tragic, and Time is such a beautifully sad song. Both the Atlanta and Broadway versions of his story are very very compelling.
Bonnie & Clyde: Clyde (having the same name is purely coincidence skfjskd). His arc is quite a tragic one, showing how one's childhood and traumatic experiences can influence you later in life.
Matilda: Bruce. The cake scene always used to freak me out as a kid, but in hindsight I've come to realise that discomfort probably comes from my own experiences of having teachers forcing me to eat. So I feel for this poor kid. And his new arc of just being fucking Broken by Miss Trunchbull's abuse until she's dealt with is just so fucking sad.
Little Shop of Horrors: Audrey 2. The puppeteering never ceases to impress me, and I love how unapologetically evil and manipulative they are hsjdjskd
CatCF: Mike, mainly down to Michael Wartella and Teddy Hinde both being absolutely gold actors and mastering both the comedic aspect and jerkass parts of the role
The Prince Of Egypt: Rameses. Admittedly there's a bit of bias for Liam Tamne from when he was in a StEx workshop, but I love Rameses' costuming and his story arc.
Hadestown: Orpheus. Another character I love bc of the tragedy aspect, why the fuck did you turn around my guy-😭
MY BABY! MY LOVE!!! 😭😍 (I'd insert a crying heart eyes emoji if I had it)

Least favorite actor/actress in it
THE ENTIRE 2004 movie cast! Don't get me wrong ... I love the actors, but I hate them in the movie!
If I've seen it live or not
I HAVE! I saw it in London and it was amazing, not to mention it was lead by three understudies/alternates! (Erik/the Phantom, Christine and Raoul's understudies/alternates were on) 😍
Dream role (if I could actually sing)
LORD! If I had the pipes for it I'd go for Christine 😅
A headcanon
Simple -- Love Never Dies never happened (I'm sorry -- but it was a mess 😅 I do love Til I Hear You Sing, Love Never Dies, and Beneath The Moonless Sky)
Dream casting
Oh dear, where do I start -- I gotta shorten it down to one or two per character 😅
Christine - Celinde Schoenmaker or Lucy St. Louis (they've played the role previously, but I've not gotten to see them)
Erik/the Phantom - I'll take anyone who's previously played him on stage (No, not you Gerard Butler) ❤️ but maybe Ramin Karimloo ❤️ or Killian Donnelly ❤️
Raoul - HADLEY FRASER! But same as with the Phantom -- anyone who's played him on stage ❤️ Or Bradley Jaden, in Italy! 😍
Madame Giry - Liz Robertson from the 25th Anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall 😍 Or Emma Thompson ❤️
Meg Giry - Holly-Anne Hull, or Katie Hall ❤️
Monsieur Gilles André - Philip Griffiths (he either has to play André or Reyer 😅)
Monsieur Richard Firmin - Scott Davies (My Phantom from when I saw the show)
Carlotta Guidicelli - Honestly, Wendy Ferguson (25th anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall)
Ubaldo Piangi - Wynne Evans (25th anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall)
(in the production I saw it was no vest, but suspenders, and I think the shirt was a little ripped (and more open to show his chest) but I cannot post about the Phantom of the Opera and not talk about my boy Hadley! 😅😍
Want to get my thoughts on a musical? Send it my way ❤️
The new Wuthering Heights musical at the Berkeley Rep is a solid 10/10. The way they gave Heathcliff a defined identity as an Indian man, instead of being like “well the book doesn’t say, so it’s not important...” It was so good & necessary! And Liam Tamne was amazing!!! Georgia Bruce also did sooo much, she carried the comedic relief so hard, I loved her!
