Arsenal Military Academy 烈火军校 Review

So after watching Ancient Love Poetry, I wanted to check out more of Xu Kai's work and I came across this drama and as before, I started this drama without looking into anything other than the fact that Xu Kai is in the cast.

I'm not a professional critic, just a casual drama watcher.

I subscribed to iQiYi so I was able to watch it without ads and stuff but I am not sure of the English translation as iQiYi only allows you to show one language subtitle at a time.

Onto the review.

Plot

I would say that the plot is using a classic concept but turning it into its own plot. So Xie Xiang decided to crossdress and become her brother Xie Liang Chen and join the Arsenal Military Academy. She joins the 7th batch of students and become roommates with playboy Gu Yan Zhen, friends with Huang Song, Shen Jun Shan, Zhu Yan Lin and Ji Jin. She endures the challenges of a military school while trying to survive as the Japanese want to take over the territory.

Okay, so the actual plot is more complicated than this but I think it is also because there is a lot of back story of other characters. You could even say that the actual couple do not have so much screen on time which I do feel that they need. (But given that they deleted the kiss scenes for whatever reason, I do think more of them might have been edited out. If you don't know what I am talking about, go search it on YouTube.)

I would say the biggest plot gap for the drama is how Xie Xiang manage to even become her brother. So her brother actually died in a car crash which is not like s super secret thing but the academy did not know about it? I find it extremely weird that they do not know about it honestly. Secondly, how she managed to get past the body checks. I have no idea how she can just scrape pass the first one. Thirdly, does no one suspect her? To me the fact that she did not use the public bath is a big sign since I can tell you that most military guys are like free with their body in a sense and only a few people suspected her.

On the other hand, I also like that there is no big reveal of her identity that just lead her to dismiss and such, the plot took advantage of her reveal which I really think was good.

Also, it was only pretty late in the show where they actually 'finalised' the couple because I would say that any episode before 34, the couple was actually not even there I would say. Like yes Gu Yan Zhen liked her from the beginning but Xie Xiang actually only realised her feelings pretty late which I do think is another good point because most shows like this also show the female falling in love too fast almost. And Gu Yan Zhen has so much of the second male lead syndrome that he might actually be the second male lead.

Commenting on one part where Qu Man Ting receives an invitation for the auction for the golden seal, I do think that they should have portrayed Xie Liang Chen to be more confident as in the scene, Gu Yan Zhen, Huang Song and Shen Jun Shan were like smiling/smirking but he was the only one frowning which made the scene feel disconnected. If they portrayed him to be more confident in a sense I do believe that it would be more thrilling.

Acting

Bai Lu who plays Xie Xiang/Xie Liang Chen is a pretty famous actor. I actually have seen one of her dramas (Love Is Sweet) but I really could not tell that it was her. It might also be because of the fact that I actually am like okay with the drama that I watch that is why I did not have an impression of her. Anyway, she does act like a male pretty well, I would say that she looks most like a male with her hair down but since they had to gel up their hair, she actually looks more feminine. Her voice got dubbed and I can honestly see why because her voice naturally is quite feminine so it is pretty obvious that Xie Xiang is a female if they did not dub her.

Xu Kai plays Gu Yan Zhen in the drama. Firstly, he looks SO GOOD dressed in Min Guo period setting (like Hu Yi Tian so maybe Min Guo period dramas are my weakness). His acting here is also pretty good but also definitely different from the dramas that I have seen him in. He is a playboy here but is actually quite a soft person on the inside and the acting does him justice.

Gao Yu Er who portrays Xian Rong in the drama is also such a good actor. I think it is easier to act as a good person than an evil person but she does it with no guilt in a sense(?) Like most dramas would show that the evil would die regretting what they have done/have some guilt at the end but for this drama no. Like I would say Xian Rong as also given up on Shen Jun Shan at the end where she was willing to kill him too and I really appreciate that. She is like the perfect evil. (This is unrelated to AMS but I just finished There Was Once A Lingjian Mountain and she portrayed the Lady Boss and I really like her acting even more so I do hope to watch more of her dramas in the future.)

I do not really want to talk about the other characters since I do not really have the time but here are some notes on them.

The voice of Qu Man Ting is actually the actress herself.

I really like the way of Shen Ting Bai loves Qu Man Ting, you can see that he is more mature(?) in a way and it really is like the perfect example of selfless love/unreciprocated love/liking your childhood friend.

The scene where Gu Yan Zhen and Shen Jun Shan is competing to drink, they did actually drink real beer since they did not know (but they spat it out immediately so the scene in the drama might have used fake ones).

Spoiler here. I am glad that Huang Song died without knowing that Xie Liang Chen is Xie Xiang because Huang Song would be a character to me that should be kept pure almost.

There is only technically 8 people who knew that Liang Chen was a female before the great reveal but I do suspect that 1 more person knew but did not say it out. They are Tan Xiao Jun, Gu Yan Zhen, Shen Jun Shan, Shen Jun Shan's helper/friend, Guo Shu Ting, Xian Rong, Xian Rong's bodyguard, Li Wen Zhong. I do think Yu Jie actually knows but did not say anything. I also think Qu Man Ting was sort of suspicious but was not a firm I believe that he is a she kind of thing.

Setting/Clothes

I think the budget that went into filming in adequate as the clothes, scenes, gunfire and stuff are well portrayed.

OST

Not bad, the opening song and the song sang by Bai Lu and Xu Kai was the most memorable.

Overall, I would give it a 8.5/10. I can see why some people would avoid it but I do think that they should give it a try. Also it made me notice two more actors Meng En (Zhu Yan Lin) and Ji Jin (Wang Yi Zhe) which I am glad to know more about.

After being depressed due to the sudden death of her brother Xie Xiang quit everything and decided to travel from her hometown Peking to Shunyuan City. She decided to pretend to be her Big Brother Xie Liangchen and entered the Arsenal Military Academy in order to fulfill his brothers desires and to also understand her brothers perspectives.

In the academy she met the wealthy troublemaker Gu Yan Zhen and the calm and cold Shen Jun Shan. After their rigorous training Xie Xiang alongside her comrades were able to become strong soldiers who wants to protect their country. Through series of events and incidents, Xie Xiang was able to show her capabilities which earns admiration and trust of her comrades. The Japanese and other Foreign Nationals alongside with some corrupt officials in the government who desires for power became one of the biggest obstacles of Xie Xiang and her comrades. Their battle with the enemies has took many innocent lives and many soldiers had sacrificed their lives to protect their country.

☑️ Strong Female Lead

• This drama consists of many strong female characters including the female lead herself, so if you are not into dramas with damsel in distress female lead then this drama is good for you. This drama didn't start with Op and Badass female lead, because the female lead started from scratch she may have skills but her stamina cannot get closer to those of men. The female lead trains harder and in the end she became a strong soldier that her brothers could be proud of.

☑️ Crossdressing Female Lead

• Not going to lie but Bai Lu really looks handsome as Xie Liangchen. Her portrayal of the character is outstanding and Man! I really fe for her character as Xie Liangchen. Dramas with female leads who crossdresses and pretends to be a man is really fascinating to watch specially when they can do things that a man can do its really satisfying

☑️ Strong Patriotism

• I dont about this one but in my own opinion I think chinese likes to produce dramas that really portrays younger generations patriotism and love for their country and this drama is a good example for that. This drama shows strong patriotism of young students. They are courageous and brave to step up and fight for their country wherein the adults cant do, sadly on their act of stepping up a lot of innocent youngsters lives were sacrificed and lost due to greed and injustices

☑️Hottie Actors

• The first and second male lead are eye candies and as hot as damn. One likes to chase troubles and can act as kid (when he is with the female lead though) and the other is as cold as ice and always were a poker face but act as a softie ( and also when he is with the female lead too). Both first and second lead were able to give justice to the character and they were able to pull off the characters perfectly. The other men in the squad are sexy as af too♥️♥️

☑️ Lowkey Romance

• This drama is a slow burn romance and if you're looking for a heavy romance then it is not for you joke hahaha. These drama will give a sense of confusion for the viewers because it makes both the first and second male lead to be a perfect match with the male lead. This drama might not have too many skin ship but the simple loving glances and smiles is already good enough to make us viewers fall in love. One thing that makes me frustrated is the cut scenes for our beloved kissing scenes almost all of the kiss scenes were cutted, but I think maybe for them kissing scenes in that era was not yet that suitable so i guess that's the reason.

So all in all this drama is a must watch, planning to watch? Then a piece if advice is that

但是修好后，子孙后代都能受益

 Li bing rang ren yong da huo ba shan shi jia re

李冰让人用大火把山石加热

Li Bing asked people to heat the rock in fires

 Zai yong leng shui jiao zhu

再用冷水浇注

Poured in cold water

 Shi shan shi bao lie

使山石爆裂

To burst the rocks

 Ran hou qiao kai shi tou zao chu yi ge shan kou

然后撬开石头凿出一个山口

Then pried open the rocks and cut a pass

 Jiang min jiang yin ru dong bian gan han di qu

将岷江引向东边干旱地区

To lead the Minjiang River to the eastern arid region

 You yu shan di jiao gao ,fen liu de min jiang bu neng man zu guan gai xu qiu

由于山地较高，分流的岷江不能满足灌溉需求

Due to the high mountain area, the Minjiang River can not meet the irrigation demand

  Li bing jue ding xiu jian di ba ti gao shui wei

李冰决定修建堤坝提高水位

Li Bing decided to build a dam to raise the water level

 Ke shi di ba hen rong yi bei tuan ji de Min jiang chong zou

可是堤坝很容易被湍急的岷江冲走

But the dam was easily washed away by the swift Minjiang River

 Li bing cong  he bian xi yi fu de fu nv shen shang shou dao qi fa

李冰从河边洗衣服的妇女身上受到启发

Li Bing was inspired by women washing clothes by the river

 Dang fang ru shi tou dao xi yi kuang shi

当放入石头到洗衣筐时

When put stones into the laundry basket

 He shui cong xi yi kuang de feng xi zhong liu guo

河水从洗衣筐的缝隙中流过

The river flowed through the crevices of the laundry basket

 Xi yi kuang que bu hui bei he shui chong zou

而洗衣筐却不会被河水冲走

And the laundry basket won't be washed away  

 Tong yang de ,ru guo yong zhu long zhuang shang e luan shi tou ru jiang zhong

同样的，如果用竹笼装上鹅卵石投入江中

Similarly, if put pebbles in bamboo cages and throw into river

 Jiang shui cong zhu long he e luan shi de feng xi zhong liu zou

江水从竹笼和鹅卵石的缝隙中流走

The river flows through the crevices of bamboo cages and pebbles

 Dang jiang shui de chong ji li bian xiao hen duo

当江水的冲击力变小很多

When the impact force of the river becomes much smaller

 Di ba jiu neng xiu zhu qi lai

堤坝就能修筑起来

The dam can be built

 Li Bing dai ling bai xing yong zhe ge fang fa xiu jian di ba

李冰带领百姓用这个方法修建堤坝

Li Bing led the people to build dams in this way

 Ti gao shui wei bing jiang Min jiang fen wei nei jiang he wai jiang

提高水位并将岷江分为内江和外江

Raised the water level and divided the Min jiang river into inside and outside rivers

 Ji jian shao le yu ji shi  jiang shui dui di an de chong ji

既减少了雨季时暴涨的江水对堤岸的冲击

It reduced the river’ impact force to the banks in wet-season

 You yin nei jiang shui guan gai le gan han de nong tian

又引内江水灌溉了干旱的农田

And pumped inside river water into dry fields

 Ke shi wen ti you lai le

可是问题又来了

But there was another problem

 Nei jiang he dao xia zhai ,hen rong yi bei yu ji de ni sha du se

内江河道狭窄,很容易被淤积的泥沙堵塞

The inside River is narrow and easily blocked by silt

 Li Bing you she ji le si xing de fei sha yan

李冰又设计了S型的飞沙堰

And Li Bing designed S-shaped desilting Weir

 Li yong shui liu de chong ji jiang ni sha pai ru wai jiang

利用水流的冲击将泥沙排入外江

Using the impact of water flow to drain silt into the outer river

 Shi gan jing de shui liu ru nei jiang

使干净的水流入内江

To lead the clean water to inside river

 Li Bing you rang ren zai jiang di fang ru you ke du de shi xiang

李冰又让人在江底放入标有刻度的石像

Li Bing asked to put graduated stone statues at the river bottom

 Dang he di ni sha da dao shi xiang jing jie xian shi

当河底泥沙达到石像警戒线时

When river silt reach the warning line of the status

 Bian dui ni sha jin xing qing li

便对泥沙进行清理

To clean up the silt

 Zhi ci ,Du jiang yan shui li gong cheng zhong yu wan gong

至此，都江堰水利工程终于完工

The Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project was finally completed

 Du jiang yan xiao chu le shui huan

都江堰消除了水患

Dujiangyan eliminated the floods

 Guan gai le cheng du ping yuan , shi ta cheng wei le tian fu zhi guo

灌溉了成都平原，使它成为了天府之国

irrigated the Chengdu Plain and made it become the land of abundance

 Li jing liang qian san bai nian ，Dujiangyan zhi dao jin tian dou zai fa hui zuo yong.

历经2300年，都江堰直到今天都在发挥作用

Until now It has worked for 2300 years
