What if—and stay with me here—you and Abigail Anderson meet after the nuclear war? Thank you for being here and for all the messages and comments so far. It means the world. Violence and sexual themes, my works are 18+ only. All screenshots on my blog are from my personal gameplay.
For the past twenty years, you’ve watched the same tropical fish, electric blue and fire-engine red, gliding across your computer screen in an agonizingly predictable rhythm. It’s only now that you find yourself longing to experience the texture of the water they inhabit.
You know very well that it would not be wise to go outside.
The blinding flashes of light and the thunderous clap of explosions are an acid burn against the labyrinths of your mind. The horrifying sight of the only landscape you’d ever known reduced to rubble while your family scrambled to get you to the safety of the bunker.
Maybe the loneliness has finally caught up with you, or perhaps it’s the relentless glare of the artificial lights slowly eroding your sanity.
But what if, contrary to their warnings, it’s not a desolate wasteland anymore?
As you ponder the enchantments that lie beyond your impermeable tomb, vibrant hues of coral reef and gently swaying anemones taunt you.
“Stupid sea turtles. You probably have twelve eyes by now,” you mumble, your plight only heard by the dust on your bookshelves and a solitary pair of slippers near the entrance to your sleeping quarters.
It’s time to take your daily dose of vitamins and choke down another prepackaged meal that tastes more like chemicals than actual food, and your stomach doesn’t even have the decency to growl. You reluctantly pry yourself away from the evening’s entertainment, your eyes darting to the digital clock above the whiteboard to count down the minutes to your dinner alarm.
On the menu for tonight are three delicious options: chicken and potatoes, beef mac and cheese, or a warm and comforting bowl of sloppy, insipid oatmeal with apple slices that never quite rehydrate as the package promises.
Truth be told, everything tastes like a monotonous heap of nothingness, and you’re tempted to paint the walls with it instead.
Alas, when the clock chimes at you like an insouciant bird suddenly forgetting it hasn’t seen the sun in over a decade, you begrudgingly get up and continue with your daily routines, trapped in the monotony of it all.
Just as you are about to tear open your lavish foil packet of sustenance, a strange, unrecognizable sound echoes from the desk. At first, your heart skips a beat, mistaking the warbling sound for a warning alert, indicating a potential issue with the air ventilation system or some other critical failure in this sterile foxhole you’re forced to call home.
Despite this, as you plod your way across the frigid floor on your brisk return to the computer, you nearly trip over your own feet at what you discover.
It’s a chat box of some kind, from an interface you’ve never seen before.
A: Is anyone out there?
Your eyes strain as you read the unexpected message, the words blurring together until you’re finally jolted out of your trance by a second one.
A: Please tell me I’m not the only one left...
Gripped by the sudden fear that you might have quietly descended into madness, you blink hard, hoping the mirage might disappear so you can go about your riveting night with at least half your marbles intact.
A: God, it’s been so long since I’ve touched anyone, I forget what it feels like.
The chat box flickers impatiently, awaiting your response. Your fingers hover over the keyboard, unable to produce a reply.
This can’t be real.
You spent years curled up by the radio, desperate for human connection, and not a single living creature drifted along those frequencies. The possibility of finding other survivors through the computer disappeared when the population and all its infrastructure vanished into sheets of vapor.
The buzz of florescent bulbs above your head is making it difficult to concentrate. You glance up at the long-abandoned treadmill beckoning you to step aboard to bring some order to your lunacy. You contemplate it until the next message appears and captures your full attention, keeping you firmly planted in your seat.
A: I swear if I have to scarf down another bag of chili mac, I’m going to lose it.
This person knows exactly what you're going through, struck by the same hardships. Finally, your mind and body synchronize, and you regain sensation in your fingertips.
⚡️Does yours come with peppermints? Mine does. They taste like shit, but I’m building a chess set with the ones I can’t bear to eat.
A: Holy fuck.
⚡️I know. I don’t even remember how to play chess.
A: HOLY FUCK!
It’s your first meeting with something other than the lifeless mop tucked away in the cabinet, and you scold yourself for coming across so indifferently. There is still a part of you that remains convinced you are in some sort of dream.
A: I can’t believe it finally worked. Are you for real?
It’s a relevant question, one you’ve battled with for some time now if you’re honest.
⚡️I’ve wondered the same thing lately. Maybe I’m just trapped in a really bad dream, or the air ran out in my bunker and I’m dead as a motherfucker.
A: Seems like a cruel way to spend the afterlife.
⚡️You should try the oatmeal. If there’s a Hell, I’ve got about four hundred packets of it in my pantry.
You take another quick look at the clock, and it's been around five minutes since you last replied. It’s not that you expect this person to read you a bedtime story, but if you're feeling anxious about losing them already, there's no one around to criticize you for it.
A: The one with the apples, right?
Your heart leaps with pure exhilaration. Either your brain is playing tricks on you, reflecting your experience to keep you from bouncing off the walls, or this person is destined to become your closest companion.
⚡️Do they get stuck in your teeth, too?
Your kitchen timer is rattling angrily on the countertop, and you're unable to determine how much time has passed since it started buzzing. The fear inside you grows, convincing you that leaving at this moment would somehow sever the connection. Putting yourself in harm's way is a real possibility when you choose to skip a meal. In response, you decide to sprint there and back, unwilling to take any chances.
A: No, but that’s because I know how to cook them properly.
With a loud clatter, your porcelain bowl lands on the desk, and the sauce immediately oozes onto your mouse pad. An indignant huff escapes your chest as you lick your fingers clean and plop back into your chair, almost losing your balance as it threatens to roll away.
It's possible that you're not as offended as you initially thought, as a slight stinging feeling radiates through your cheeks. How long has it been since you last smiled?
⚡️Hold up, are you saying I don’t know how to cook?
A: Not necessarily. How would you rate your ability to read directions, though?
Giggles slip out of your mouth, catching you off guard. The stark contrast between the gloomy ambiance of the space and the vibrant, hopeful sound is startling. But something warm and playful rises inside you.
⚡️That’s it. I'm turning off my computer.
A: Please don’t go.
Even though you've never met this person, the desperation in their tone weighs heavily on you.
⚡️Don’t worry, I won’t. I was only kidding.
The response is lightning fast, leaving you no time to acknowledge your meal—steadily cooling and forming an unappetizing skin across the surface.
A: Oh. Okay. Well, good then. I was messing around too... the apples are the fucking worst.
You stare in disbelief at the conversation so far, your mind a chaotic blend of empty thoughts and a flood of words waiting to burst out.
⚡️I knew it. They weren’t any good even before they expired!
A: Do your gardens still work?
It's been forever since you had the chance to look after them. The systems malfunctioned early on and gone were the days of fresh vegetation. You cried yourself to sleep for weeks.
⚡️No gardens.
A: I’m sorry, that blows. Broken, or you never had them to begin with?
⚡️Yeah, the first one. A while ago, now.
Your bowl of goop sits untouched as you reminisce about running your fingers over the lush, waxy leaves.
A: I’ll share my apples with you. Got any books over there?
Regardless of your unwillingness to accept it, your bunker boasts an extensive collection of literature that you have diligently read from cover to cover. Since the universe only gives so much at a time, you jest.
⚡️I hear the postal system is on hiatus. Any chance you were in bumfuck Montana when the world fell apart?
Her answer is so electrifying that it sends shivers racing from your scalp down to your toes and you have to steady your breathing before you can fully absorb the details.
A: Born and raised. I’m Abby, by the way. It’s really nice to meet you.

1935 –
(for Coleman Hawkins)
The structure of landscape is infinitesimal,
Like the structure of music,
seamless, invisible.
Even the rain has larger sutures.
What holds the landscape together, and what holds music together,
Is faith, it appears—faith of the eye, faith of the ear.
Nothing like that in language,
However, clouds chugging from west to east like blossoms
Blown by the wind.
April, and anything's possible.
Here is the story of Hsuan Tsang.
A Buddhist monk, he went from Xian to southern India
And back—on horseback, on camel-back, on elephant-back, and on
foot.
Ten thousand miles it took him, from 629 to 645,
Mountains and deserts,
In search of the Truth,
the heart of the heart of Reality,
The Law that would help him escape it,
And all its attendant and inescapable suffering.
And he found it.
These days, I look at things, not through them,
And sit down low, as far away from the sky as I can get.
The reef of the weeping cherry flourishes coral,
The neighbor's back porch light bulbs glow like anemones.
Squid-eyed Venus floats forth overhead.
This is the half hour, half-light, half-dark,
when everything starts to shine out,
And aphorisms skulk in the trees,
Their wings folded, their heads bowed.
Every true poem is a spark,
and aspires to the condition of the original fire
Arising out of the emptiness.
It is that same emptiness it wants to reignite.
It is that same engendering it wants to be re-engendered by.
Shooting stars.
April's identical,
celestial, wordless, burning down.
Its light is the light we commune by.
Its destination's our own, its hope is the hope we live with.
Wang Wei, on the other hand,
Before he was 30 years old bought his famous estate on the Wang River
Just east of the east end of the Southern Mountains,
and lived there,
Off and on, for the rest of his life.
He never travelled the landscape, but stayed inside it,
A part of nature himself, he thought.
And who would say no
To someone so bound up in solitude,
in failure, he thought, and suffering.
Afternoon sky the color of Cream of Wheat, a small
Dollop of butter hazily at the western edge.
Getting too old and lazy to write poems,
I watch the snowfall
From the apple trees.
Landscape, as Wang Wei says, softens the sharp edges of isolation.

Bouquet and tulip for all kiddos👀
Hehe it was fun doing research for these uwu. Since it's gonna be long, I'm putting it under the cut lol
💐 [BOUQUET] If you could send your OC a bouquet, what flowers would make it up and what is the overall message?
Ok so it took me some time to look up a bunch of flower meanings so I can mix and match them lol. I'm not that good with flowers so idk if all of these meanings will work. I also accidentally turned it into more of a "what bouquet represents them" as opposed to "what do I wanna tell them personally" 😭. Ig it's just time to be mean to some of my ocs lol. But this is what I got
Dan is getting a boquet of peonies and white roses. These represent his want to start over with new beginnings while trying to hide his shame by being optimistic and compassionate. He feels like he could do better with himself so he's embarrassed to admit why he wants to change so much 😔
Randy gets a nice one lol. His is filled with orange roses and heliconias to show his immense passion for the things that he likes (human flesh). He's a very happy guy. He's filled with a lot of energy and desire to eat.
Davis is just getting a bunch of snapdragons because he's an asshole pejjfkksv. I also couldn't find any other flowers that fit him 😭. It represents his strength and underlying deception. If I did wanna send him a message, maybe I could add some black roses to it to be like "you're an asshole and you're gonna die because of it 😤" lejgklakv
Ronny's bouquet is filled with red roses, anemones, and proteas. Yes I am bullying him pejguisov. He longs for a change and to transform himself into the best version of himself that will make himself happy, even if it comes with the cost of scaring everyone else away. The anemones also represent his clashing thoughts, losing hope in humanity while at the same time anticipating that maybe someone will prove him wrong.
Cyrus is getting a single daffodil. I am bullying him too lpsofiks. This is supposed to represent the tragedy of his life by isolating himself from the rest of the world in attempt to protect others as an act of chivalry. But also he doesn't realize that he's only hurting his mental health by doing so 😭
Elowyn gets a nice bouquet lol. She doesn't deserve it but laosjclsivks. She gets orchids and purple irises. These show off everything that she stands for and strives to be. She wants to represent the body of femininity, elegance, etc, all while imparting her wisdom and findings to the rest of the world.
🌷 [TULIP] What is your OC's favourite flower and colour?
Dan would like daffodils. They're bright and look like they got little trumpets at the end of them. He likes the shapes they make lol. His favorite color is blue, leaning on the lighter or tealer side uwu
Randy likes larkspur flowers because he thinks they look funny lol. Why they have little bulb heads? It looks like they got little teeth and have a tongue sticking out. Why they look like that? His favorite color would be neon purple, or honestly neon anything. Just something loud and out there lol
Davis would probably like delphiniums. He likes the clusters they make and would honestly love to put some up around his house. He also likes the color green and prefers darker greens
Ronny would love black roses because he'd think they're cool as fuck lol. Their aesthetic is so sick. Other than that, his favorite color is purple uwu
Cyrus loves sunflowers. There's something about them, maybe it's because they're always associated with happy emotions, but he thinks they're cute. His favorite color would be a very pale light blue
Elowyn thinks gladiolus flowers look very pretty. They look very soft and she wants to put one behind her ear. She also loves the color pink 💖

Anemones are exquisite flowers that add a touch of elegance and vibrancy to any garden. With a wide variety of anemone seeds available, choosing the right ones can be both exciting and overwhelming. In this guide, we'll delve into the different types of anemone seeds and provide tips on selecting the best flower seeds for your garden.
Understanding Anemone Seeds: A Brief Overview
Anemone seeds come in various species and cultivars, each offering unique colors, shapes, and growth habits. Some of the popular types of anemone seeds include:
Anemone Coronaria: Known for their bold and colorful flowers, Anemone Coronaria seeds produce blooms in shades of red, pink, purple, and white. These flowers feature a prominent dark center and are commonly used in bouquets and floral arrangements.
Anemone Nemorosa: Also known as wood anemones, these seeds produce delicate white or light pink flowers with yellow centers. Anemone Nemorosa is a woodland species that thrives in shaded areas, making it ideal for naturalizing under trees or in woodland gardens.
Anemone Blanda: With its daisy-like flowers in shades of blue, pink, and white, Anemone Blanda seeds are perfect for adding early spring color to rock gardens, borders, and containers. These low-growing plants create a carpet of cheerful blooms.
Anemone Sylvestris: This tall variety of anemone seeds produces elegant white flowers with golden stamens. Anemone Sylvestris is a perennial species that blooms in late spring to early summer, attracting pollinators and adding a graceful touch to garden borders.
Choosing the Right Anemone Seeds for Your Garden
When selecting anemone seeds for your garden, consider the following factors to ensure success and enjoyment:
Climate and Growing Conditions: Different species of anemones thrive in specific climate zones and growing conditions. Choose seeds that are suitable for your region's climate, soil type, and sun exposure to ensure healthy growth and abundant blooms.
Growth Habit and Size: Anemones vary in growth habits, from low-growing ground covers to tall, upright varieties. Determine the space available in your garden and select seeds that match your desired plant height and spread.
Color Preferences: Consider your color preferences and overall garden design when choosing anemone seeds. Whether you prefer vibrant hues or soft pastels, there's an anemone variety to suit your aesthetic vision.
Blooming Season: Anemones bloom at different times of the year, ranging from early spring to late summer. Choose seeds that align with your desired blooming season to create a continuous display of flowers throughout the year.
Companion Planting: Explore companion planting options to enhance the beauty and functionality of your garden. Pairing anemones with compatible plants such as spring bulbs, perennials, or annuals can create stunning color combinations and attract beneficial insects.
Tips for Successful Anemone Seed Planting
Once you've selected the right anemone seeds for your garden, follow these tips for successful planting and cultivation:
Prepare the Soil: Ensure the soil is well-draining, fertile, and free from weeds before planting anemone seeds. Incorporate organic matter such as compost to improve soil structure and fertility.
Sow Seeds at the Right Depth: Follow the instructions on the seed packet for the recommended sowing depth. Anemone seeds are typically sown shallowly, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, and spaced according to the specific variety's requirements.
Provide Adequate Water and Sunlight: Water newly planted seeds gently to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Anemones prefer partial to full sunlight, so choose a planting location that receives adequate sunlight for optimal growth and blooming.
Monitor Growth and Health: Keep an eye on your anemone plants as they grow, checking for signs of pests, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies. Provide additional water during dry periods and fertilize as needed to support healthy growth and abundant blooms.
Mulch and Protect: Mulch around anemone plants to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain a consistent soil temperature. Protect young seedlings from extreme temperatures, strong winds, and pests to ensure their survival and vigor.
By understanding the different types of anemone seeds available and following these tips for choosing and planting the best flower seeds for your garden, you can create a stunning display of colorful blooms that enhance your outdoor space year after year. Explore the beauty and versatility of anemones in your garden and enjoy the rewards of a thriving floral paradise.

Anemone
Such simple chemistry unlocks a bulb's code - water, light earth, air – so you can hold its callyx and corolla in your hands. What makes the heart more than a living pump; this animated lump of vein and blood? What kind of occult key can bare its bud to occupy a season of its own as if it had been dormant, not a stone? A constant love like these true wood anemones we came across by chance beneath…

Choosing the Proper Lighting for Your Aquarium
In the past, aquarium lighting was an often-overlooked aspect of aquarium keeping. However, we now know that proper lighting plays a vital role in the success of all aquarium systems.
Why is Lighting Important for Aquariums? In its most basic role, aquarium lighting allows hobbyists to observe aquarium inhabitants. But more importantly, proper aquarium lighting provides vital energy to photosynthetic plants and animals. As the primary light source (and in most cases, the only light source), proper aquarium lighting is essential for any system that contains photosynthetic organisms such as plants, anemones, or corals. Lighting also influences fish behavior and physiology and is vital for the overall health and well-being of the entire aquarium.
Different Light Bulbs and Light Fixtures for Different Setups There are a wide variety of lighting options for aquarists. This diverse selection allows hobbyists of all levels to provide the right lighting conditions for their particular aquarium inhabitants. Aquarium light fixtures are generally grouped into four general categories (from oldest technology to most innovative): Normal output fluorescent lighting, compact fluorescent lighting, high intensity metal halide lighting, and LED (Light Emitting Diode) systems.
Normal Output Fluorescent Lighting Also called Standard Fluorescent Lights, these versatile lighting systems are the easiest way to illuminate an aquarium. Fluorescent light fixtures are a great choice for fresh and saltwater fish-only aquariums. The wide selection of bulbs available for these easy-to-use, affordable, and energy-efficient light fixtures allows hobbyist to customize aquarium lighting. Use different bulbs to provide the right light for your aquarium inhabitants.
Compact Fluorescents Compact fluorescent are higher light output versions of standard fluorescent light systems. Instead of single tube bulbs, compact fluorescent systems incorporate dual or quad tube bulbs for greater light output from a single bulb. A single compact fluorescent light fixture easily does the job of two standard fluorescent fixtures. This space-saving feature makes compact fluorescent systems a great choice when upgrading from standard fluorescent systems. Fortunately, compact fluorescent light systems are no more difficult to operate and maintain than standard fluorescent light systems. These self-contained lighting systems are easy to operate and since they are a type of fluorescent light system, it has all the benefits of fluorescent lighting. For example, low operating cost, lower heat emission, and a wide selection of bulbs with color temperatures ideal for both freshwater and marine applications.
Metals Halides Metal halide systems are high intensity discharge (HID) lighting systems popular among many advanced aquarium hobbyists. Metal halide bulbs are comprised of a main glass bulb with a series of wires connecting another glass bulb (arc tube) within it. When electricity passes through the arc tube, the gases and metal salts contained within the tube produce light. Unlike other high intensity discharge lighting systems (e.g., sodium or mercury vapor lights), the light spectrum and the color rendition produced by metal halides is suited for aquarium use. Metal halide fixtures are ideal for aquariums, such as reef aquariums, with inhabitants that require high lighting conditions. Metal halide systems are also used for very large aquariums or aquariums deeper than 24 inches where other lighting systems may not be powerful enough to provide adequate illumination.
LED (Light Emitting Diode) As a relative "newcomer" to the world of aquarium lighting, LED light fixtures are often subject to confusion and misconceptions. LED technology employs a radically different approach to light generation. LEDs emit light as energized or exited subatomic particles pass through a semiconductor material. This distinct process of light generation called electroluminescence requires FAR LESS energy to produce brilliant light for an energy-efficient choice to aquarium lighting.
When concerned with supporting photosynthetic aquatic life, hobbyists should look for PAR values of LED fixtures. PAR or Photosynthetically Active Radiation designates a spectral range of light that photosynthetic organisms utilize during photosynthesis. Keep in mind that PAR values vary at different depths and distances from the LED light source. In other words, the same LED fixture will have multiple PAR values capable of supporting different species with different light requirements. Due to the relatively complex nature of expressing PAR levels and a lack of standardization, not all manufactures will provide PAR information the same way. To determine which LED aquarium light fixture is right for you, please refer to our handy LED Lighting Comparison Guide.
Choosing the right lights for your aquarium is a matter of personal taste and your inhabitant's needs. However, be sure to always use lighting systems specifically designed for aquariums. The right lights help you enjoy the beauty of your aquarium AND keep your inhabitants healthy.

April in the Garden
“Spring is the time of plans and projects.” ―Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina
The first few weeks of April will indeed be days of watching, waiting, and planning our projects...a veritable potpourri of gardening tasks. Instead of sunshine and songbirds, the first few days of spring arrived with heavy downpours and gale-force winds. Not to be discouraged, I put on my mud boots and rain gear to discover the harbingers of spring…my hellebores. Hiding beneath a blooming azalea, I found my green and fuchsia-tinged aristocratic Lenten roses stretching upwards. If you haven’t planted any hellebores in your shade garden, add them to your “must- buy” list. These perennial woodland beauties are available in a spectrum of colors including red, burgundy, yellow, green, pink, ivory, yellow, and lime. Some varieties are even almost black. They are evergreen, deer and vole resistant, and provide long-lived blooms throughout spring. Since hellebores survive winter frosts, they can be planted now next to ferns, hostas, or other light shade denizens.

Although the weather doesn’t look or feel like spring, my garden is awake and desires to delight. The crabapple, prune, and apricot trees boast spectacular color and the buds on the cherry trees are ready to burst open. Iris, anemone, hyacinth, and cyclamen shimmer in the morning dew, and in the next few weeks the tulips and freesia will be at their prime.
Pollinators are flocking to the fragrant white viburnum and the blue rosemary. I am a proponent of planting perennials and bulbs because no matter what the season, something is always in bloom. Over the years, and for several months, I planted daffodils and narcissi bulbs on a weekly schedule. My reward is five to six months of continuous flushes of flowers from countless specimens and cross-category hybrids, including the fragrant jonquilla, doubles, and trumpets.
If you haven’t already prepared your soil for spring planting, don’t waste any time getting started. Add compost, leaf litter, or manure to increase the nutrients and fertility. Chop cover crops before they go to seed.  They can be composted or left on the ground to decompose. This green manure will increase nitrogen, and nutrients, and improve soil structure and quality. After cutting my cover crops, I will scatter them around the landscape, then wait three weeks before planting to allow for the breakdown. If the soil is not being fed, it is feeding on itself, and that will spell disaster. After your new crops are sowed, apply a layer of mulch for added protection, water retention, and erosion control
.The ground is too cold and wet to scatter seeds so many people have started their sprouting endeavors indoors. If this describes you, remember that before you transplant outdoors, your seedlings will need to be hardened off. Once we have reliable days of sunshine, hardening off is an easy process performed over seven days.
·      On day one, move your seedlings outside in filtered sunlight for one hour, then bring them back indoors.
·      On day two, the seedlings get two hours of sun playtime.
·      On day three, offer three hours.
·      Repeat each day adding one extra hour of sunshine before bringing them back inside.
·      By the end of seven days, it is usually safe to transplant your seedlings wherever you want them to establish. Use your best judgment and make sure the soil and temperature are warm enough.
Don’t forget to spread organic snail and slug bait or your new sprouts will be supper for these gastropod mollusks.
Continue harvesting your winter vegetables of broccoli, kale, cauliflower, spinach, Swiss chard, and salad greens. Although my arugula is bolting to set seed, I continue to cut the leaves and flowers to use in my salads. Once the days get hot, I’ll dry and save the seeds for scattering in the fall. Speaking of seeds, make sure to read the instructions on any seed packet you purchase. Many seeds must be soaked to help with germination. Wait to plant your vegetable seeds until the soil reaches 65-75 degrees. Most seeds require a planting depth and width that is twice the seed size, except for tiny seeds such as lettuce, celery, and dill which can be scattered and lightly raked. Tiny seeds don’t like to be buried because they need sunlight to germinate.
Camellias have been illuminating the garden for several months, but the substantial storms have knocked a plethora of blossoms to carpet the ground. Pick up and destroy all fallen camellia blossoms as a prevention against camellia petal blight. If leaves are distorted, pale, and fleshy, you might have camellia leaf gall which causes the leaves to turn white and fall off. The best control is to pick up and destroy any affected leaves before they turn white.
Clematis leaves are beginning to unfurl on what appears to be dead vines. Don’t be tempted to cut back unless you know what type of clematis you have. There are three types of clematis: Group 1:woody-stemmed bloom on last year’s stems. Prune AFTER flowering in spring.
Group 2: double and semi-double varieties bloom twice. Prune AFTER spring flowers fade and cut back dead wood in winter.
Group 3: large blooms that appear in summer and fall grow on the current year’s growth. Prune in severely in winter leaving 2 buds on each stem.
These are just a few of the garden potpourri of chores that can be accomplished in early April in anticipation of spring sowing later in the month. Lawns will welcome an aerating and feeding anytime now. Shrubs, trees, and ground covers will benefit from fertilizing this month.  For more ideas, check out my book, Growing with the Goddess Gardeneravailable at https://www.CynthiaBrian.com/online-store or wherever you buy your garden books.

Planting Peace
“Landscapes move us in a manner more analogous to the action of music than to anything else. Gradually and silently the charm carries over us: the beauty has entered our souls we know not exactly when and how.” Frederick Law Olmstead
It was in the 1860s that America’s pioneer landscape architect brought calming, pastoral public areas to urban dwellers with his design of New York’s Central Park. Throughout his life, Frederick Law Olmstead, designed 100 public parks and recreation grounds and his successor firm has seen the development of over 1090 parkway systems over the last 100 years. With all his parks, he planted peace and tranquility for posterity.
Post Thanksgiving, it is finally feeling like autumn with cooler and crisper air, turning leaves, and stressless strolls through bucolic parks. Our climate is changing and as gardeners we struggle to keep pace.
November is the best time to begin planting spring-blooming bulbs. I picked my first bouquet of narcissi of the season on November 1st before I had even begun planting any other bulbs. Once the ground chills to about 55 degrees, start the process of planting naturalizing narcissi as well as other bulbs in well-drained sandy loam where they’ll receive at least six hours of sunlight daily.
With our dense, nutrition-lacking California clay soil, we need to amend it with sand, peat moss, and compost before digging the holes. All flower bulbs require neutral PH soil around 7.0 to develop a strong root system that supports flowers. Mother Nature is busy spreading her wild seeds via the wind, birds, animal fur, and even our stocking feet. Most flowers need the next few colder months to rest and germinate. Before the geese head south, walk around your yard to ponder what you’ll want to improve, include, edit, or change for the spring. Our year of outdoor work is winding down as our celebration of gratitude approaches. Work off the calories of the holiday season with garden chores in preparation for a respite this coming winter. Head to the park to unwind, encounter stillness, and appreciate beauty. Listen to the music of nature.
ü  PROTECT plant roots by mulching your garden.
ü  TURN the soil in your vegetable garden, pull out any unwanted growers such as mint, add buckets of compost, and plant a nitrogen-rich cover crop like fava beans or clover. Blanket the ground with straw and continue mulching until planting time in spring.
ü  SUPPRESS weeds while enriching the soil by laying newspaper (three or four sheets) on your bare earth. The newspaper will biodegrade and the zinc in the ink adds nutrients to the mulch. Cover with straw, leaves, or wood chips to continue adding nutrients.
ü  GRIND fallen leaves with a mower to reduce particle size and increase decomposition time.
ü  DIG up bulblets of mother bulbs with numerous offshoots. Separate and replant in other areas.
ü  SOAK ranunculus and anemone tubers in tepid water overnight or for at least three or four hours before planting three inches deep and six inches apart in well-draining soil in full sunlight.
ü  PLANT spring bulbs beginning this month. Make sure you have refrigerated your tulips and crocus for at least four weeks before being dug. The best bulbs to plant for spring radiance include:
Daffodil: Hardy in cold or warm climates. Daffodils grow great in pots, too!
Tulip: Also great in containers. Group like colors together for the greatest impact.
Freesia: Magnificently scented in a rainbow of colors.
Ranunculus: Cottage-style flowers with peony-like blooms.
Hyacinth: Tough, fragrant, growing in sun or shade.
Iris: Purple, blue, white, yellow, and mauve Dutch iris make great cut flowers.
Anemone: Single or double colorful tubers prefer light shade.
Crocus: Only a few inches high, you’ll know winter is waning when they sprout.
ü  FORCE hardy flower bulbs of amaryllis, freesias, and paperwhites for Christmas blooming by potting them in sterile, neutral PH potting soil in an area where they will enjoy a temperature of 72-82 degrees Fahrenheit with good air circulation and low humidity. Give them a big drink of warm water, tamp down the soil, and do not water again until green sprouts. Amaryllis will sprout spectacular shows within eight weeks.
ü  CUT stalks of peonies to ground level and discard the cuttings as they are not good for compost. If your peonies didn’t bloom, they may be planted too deep. Dig them up this month, rework the soil, and replant ½ inch higher than the soil level.
ü  COOK a pan of cubed winter squash with rosemary for a healthy and satisfying autumn inspired side dish.
ü  TURN OFF sprinkler systems. Water by hand when necessary.
ü  LOWER mower height as lawn growth slows. If you didn’t fertilize in October or earlier in November, fertilize now with an organic fall blend.
ü  GUARD against an unexpected frost by watering deeply and covering susceptible shrubs with burlap, fabric, or blankets the afternoon before the cold arrives.
ü  REDUCE your garden work out by seeking out plants that are identified as “compact”. Look for tags that say dwarf, patio, knee-high, tiny, or baby in the variety name. If a plant tag says “perfect for cut flowers” it will grow to be too large for a small space.
ü  PICK pomegranates as they ripen or split. Harvest persimmons on trees that are being ravaged by birds and squirrels even before they are ripe. Leave on the countertop to ripen as needed.
ü  VISIT our local parks to inhale autumn aromas and savor the sensational fall foliage.
2022 marks the 200th birthday of Frederick Law Olmstead. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we can add his legacy to our thankfulness list for introducing America to the beauty, tranquility, and necessity of experiencing nature through the development of idyllic parks in towns and cities.
Let us also give our thanks to the hard-working volunteers of local garden clubs who have planted a multitude of bulbs that will blanket our roadways and hillsides with glorious blooms come spring!
My gratitude to YOU for reading my garden musings. Savor the peace of parks this season with friends and family and celebrate the melodic beauty of our rural landscapes.
Pace, plant, pick, and protect!

Plant these bulbs now for beautiful flowers this summer
Plant these bulbs now for beautiful flowers this summer
When it comes to bulb planting, autumn reigns supreme in the minds of most gardeners. Those jaunty, jewel-coloured tulips lighting up our gardens in recent weeks? Autumn-planted. The drifts of golden daffodils, perfumed hyacinths, ghostly snowflakes and dainty wood anemones that flowered throughout spring? All autumn-planted, as are the alliums whose sculptural, lollipop-shaped flowers in shades…

Seeds, bulbs and sets
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the benefits of having a garden plan is that it can prevent you from going overboard when it comes to buying seeds, bulbs and sets. (At least, that’s what I tell myself. I usually end up with some extras regardless)
When it comes to sourcing the beginnings of a flower or vegetable garden, there are many options available; garden centers, local shops, online stores, friends and family, seed traders, the list could go on for some time.
Prices of seeds, bulbs and sets can vary greatly depending on brands, varieties and quality. The seeds of a rare type of wildflower are going to be more expensive than a common type while bulbs tend to be more expensive than seeds as they are more difficult to cultivate and have the possibility of coming back in your garden year after year.
In my experience, inexpensive vegetable and flower seeds found in your local store can be just as successful as the most expensive, sought after brands available on the market. There’s no need to spend so much money and effort if at the end of the day, all you want are some nice flowers and tasty salads growing in your garden.
This is a blog about simple living. Leave the complicated, expensive, exotic and hard to care for varieties to the crazy growers, looking for a challenge.
Seeds
Tumblr media
Seeds are wonderful little things. They represent new beginnings, growth and hope for the future. Inside every one are the makings of an amazing, unique and colorful individual capable of some pretty spectacular stuff.
Seeds come in all shapes, sizes and colors, from the tiny wildflower seed to the massive runner bean seed. Some seeds we eat, like peas and corn. Others, like carrot or lettuce seeds, grow tasty roots and leaves.
Each seed has it’s own preferred environment for germination and growth. Large seeds, like the runner bean, like to be planted quite deep into the soil while others, like wildflower seeds, prefer to sit on top of the soil. Heat, water and light play an important part also.
A general rule I like to follow is to plant seeds when all risk of frost is gone and plant them as deep as they are long, keeping the soil just moist. It’s a method that hasn’t failed me yet. But if unsure, I always refer to the instructions on the seed packet or do some quick study online to make sure the seeds get off to a good start.
Bulbs
Tumblr media
Bulbs are like amazing survival shelters full of food that contain the stem of a plant that will grow when conditions are favorable. With the right care, bulbs will produce plants year after year.
Like seeds, bulbs come in various shapes, sizes and colors. In the picture above, you can see Anemone bulbs on the left, Liatris spicata bulbs at the top and Dahlia tuber bulbs to the right.
Unlike seeds however. bulbs are usually planted two to three times as deep as they are long, with the stem facing upwards and any roots facing downwards. Moist soil, gentle heat and sunlight will encourage the plant inside to wake up and get growing.
Sets and seed potatoes
Tumblr media
Onion sets and seed potatoes are like a mix between bulbs and seeds and are treated quite similarly.
Seed potatoes are small potato tubers, usually certified to be disease free, that are planted in the ground quite deep and provide food for new plant shoots so they can grow up and out of the soil to ultimately produce more potatoes.
Seed potatoes have to undergo a process known as ‘chitting’ before they are planted. ‘Chitting’ is simply leaving the seed potatoes in a cool, bright, dry location for around six weeks, until they begin to sprout small stems.
Tumblr media
Onion sets are just small, one year old onions grown from seeds that are dried and stored. When they are planted again, they just pick up where they left off and grow into a fully mature onion. They are much more successful and less time consuming than growing from seed.
I usually sort the good from the bad before planting. A good onion set should be firm, have no mold, cracks or green shoots and should be nicely rounded with good color.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which do you think are the healthier onion sets?
Sets are to be planted where they are to grow, buried until just the pointed top sticks out of the soil. Some water, warm sunshine and proper care will lead to a wonderful crop of onions.
I do apologize for the length of this post, but I hope it’s been informative and helpful to those of you who are starting out or are just interested. Please don’t hesitate to send me a message if you have any questions or if you’d like to chat, my door is always open.
Once you’ve procured the seeds, bulbs and sets you want, the next step is planting them...

Twisted Wonderland One Shot Raffle # 2: Jade Leech x Gender Neutral!Reader
asmahsan: Would it be okay if the MC whose gender doesn't really matter wanted to know more about the world around them instead of staying inside school grounds they went ahead and teleported themselves to a mountainside where the loving mountain club was having an activity of sorts and Jade approached MC and they talked for a bit? MC would ask Jade if they could tag along and he agreed so while they're probably collecting mushrooms and stuff Jade maybe asked MC about their world and how they're gonna get back *birb crowley is very suspicious* and he would also say that he preferred if they stay in the TW world rather than going back to their own world cuz REASONS SHDBSB I GUESS THIS IS A JADE X READER ONE SHOT SBBSB But you can always alter the story if u want!! And sorry if its not clear enough or anything :{
This is our second one shot raffle nya! Won and requested by @asmahsan nya!
Disclaimer: I do not own Twisted Wonderland nya. I only own the plot of this one shot nya.
P.S. I would like to apologise for Jade being OOC and my grammatical mistakes nya. Also the reader’s age here is 16 nya! Enjoy nya!
“Please, Dire Crowley? I’ve been here for a couple of months now but I haven’t explored that much around!” You begged the headmaster, kneeling on your knees.
It has been a couple of months since you’ve been here in Twisted Wonderland yet you have never gone beyond the vicinity of Night Raven College...well except when you went to the museum when you’ve made a contract to Azul to free the students from being controlled by him. Nevertheless, you knew nothing about Twisted Wonderland. You only knew about the two top schools and the museum.
Dire Crowley sighed, “Alright, alright. You may explore beyond the school for I am kind.”
“Yes!” You pumped your fist high in the air out of joy.
“However, you’re going to need to tag along with at least one student or so,” Crowley said while thinking when suddenly, as if a light bulb had lit up, an idea came into his mind, “Lucky for you, the Loving Mountain club has an activity at the mountains for the upcoming weekend. You can tag along with them. I’ll inform the president of the club that you’ll be helping them out with the activity.”
________________________________
“Oh my. This is a surprise to see you two here, [First Name], Grim,” Jade said looking at the both of you.
“[First Name] here wanted to explore around and literally begged the headmaster to-mmphh!”
“Don’t say it in front of him!” You blushed out of embarrassment as you covered Grim’s mouth with your hand, “But long story short, I’ve always wanted to explore Twisted Wonderland. I’ve never been beyond the school...well...except that time...when...you know.”
“Mmph! Mmmmph!”
“Sorry, Grim,” You removed your hand on Grim’s mouth. He simply glared at you.
“I’ll give you more canned tuna after we return from our expedition,” You said.
“Alright! Let’s get going already!”
________________________________
Your mouth dropped in awe. The mountains here are amazing.
“If you keep that up, insects might enter your mouth,” Jade chuckled, making you blush once more.
“Thanks,” You said as you immediately closed your mouth, “Sorry about that. The view is just breathtaking. Going out of the school grounds is nice. I’ve never have the chance to do this. Man, I wish I could go out quite often.”
“You may join in my club to do so. It will be fun if you’re around there,” Jade smiled. Your blushed lightly.
After the club leader gave all of you instructions, everyone started to talk to each other and partnered up. Only knowing Jade amongst the club members, you approached him, “Do you mind if I tag along with you?”
Jade smiled at you and said, “Of course not, [First Name]. Though I hope you don’t mind what I have planned to do for this activity.”
“Of course not. What are you going to do?”
________________________________
“I didn’t know you love mushrooms, Jade-senpai!” You said as you continued pick up the mushrooms he instructed you to picked.
“This is quite boring,” Grim groaned as he continued to pick some mushrooms.
“I’m glad that you’re enjoying yourself, [First Name],” Jade said.
“I mean why wouldn’t I? I don’t go outside the school grounds. Even if I was in my old world, you can’t enjoy the fresh air that nature brings,” You said with a smile.
“So, [First Name], I’m quite curious about your world and your life there. Will you share it with me?” Jade asked.
I mean why wouldn’t he. First, you’re an oddity. You don’t belong here in Twisted Wonderland. Secondly, he’s quite intrigued about it and you as well. You never talk much about your world and your life there.
“Sure. I don’t mind telling you about my world,” You said, “Though are you sure you want to know how my life was back then? It’s not as interesting as your lives here. It’s quite boring too.”
Jade smiled, “Of course, I’m sure. You’re quite...intriguing to me.”
Jade had been completely drawn to you during and after the anemones incident. He was quite interested how you’ve handled the situation and how you’ve outsmarted them. In addition to that, under your guidance, you were able to defeat at least five overblot incidents now. He was drawn by your strength and charisma as a leader and as a person. You’re quite ordinary yet you’ve done something so extraordinary that no one has able to do before. In fact, he admires you for it.
“Am I?” You started to twiddle your fingers.
“Of course. Your stories never bore me. It’s quite enjoyable to listen to you,” Jade said.
“i-Is that so?” You stuttered, blushing lightly as you tell him about your world.
________________________________
“I see. There really is no magic there? How do you humans cope up with it?”
.
.
.
“The education system of your world differs from each country. I see.”
.
.
.
“So Magift is similar to your sport in your world called American football. Tell me more.”
.
.
.
“Hahaha! That’s quite amusing. You’re different when you’re here and back to your world.”
.
.
.
Eventually, you guys took a break as the two of you sat under a tree. Grim on the other hand fell asleep by your side. You continued to talk about your world and life there.
Every information, every detail you shared...it sounds like you have a normal life there. It maybe average but it was your life. While Jade listened, he detected a hint of sadness from you. But that may be because you’re homesick.
“I had a fun life there but not as fun as being here,” You said as you giggled a bit.
“Don’t you miss your world?”
“Of course I do. I unintentionally left my family and friends there. I still haven’t found out why I’m here,” You sighed.
“Isn’t the headmaster working on it?” Jade asked.
You laughed awkwardly, “At this point, I’m not sure. Whenever Grim and I asked about it, he makes excuses after excuses after excuses.”
“If the headmaster has found a way for you to return your world, will you go back?”
“Of course, I will,” You answered without hesitation, “I have my family and friends waiting for me. They might be worried about me. I don’t know how time works here and there but I’m pretty sure that I’ve been gone for a long time in my world.”
“I see,” Jade sighed.
“Though I have to admit that I will have a hard time letting everything go,” You said sadly, “If I return back, the first thing I might do is cry. But I really must let go everything here and go back to where I belong.”
“I see,” Jade said, “Too bad. I will be having a hard time to let you go.”
“Eh?” You just blinked out of shock and confusion, “Why is that?”
Jade took a deep breathe as he holds both of your hands in his, “[First Name][Last Name]...”
You blushed at his actions, “Y-Yes?”
“I really like you. I really admire everything about you. You’ve overcome any adversities that you’ve faced. You may think you’re just an ordinary person but you’e not. You’re so much more than that. I find you very endearing,” Jade confessed.
“Jade-senpai...,” You just stared at his beautiful eyes as he continued to speak.
“You’re important to me. That’s why I don’t want to let you go. Not now, not ever,” Jade said.
The two of you started to lean in closer.
.
.
.
Closer
.
.
.
Both of your lips almost touched
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Suddenly a growl was heard which made you two back off.
“I’m hungry! What’s for lunch?”
It was Grim’s stomach who ruined the perfect moment for you two.
“Grim...,” You said in a threatening voice while glaring at him which made Grim scared and confused.
“O-oi! What did I do?”
BONUS SCENE:
The trip made your bond with Jade stronger now. However, darn that you didn’t get your kiss.
You sighed as you tried to reach a book from a bookshelf in the library. You were on your tip toes.
Suddenly someone grabbed the book before you can.
You turned around to see Jade as he trapped you by putting his arms on either side of your head with the book on hand. You blushed as your heart pounds in your chest.
“Now, where were we?”
....And scene nya! Hope you enjoyed this nya! Hope this was to your liking, @asmahsan nya! That’s all, Nyakemi out nya!

Anemone - a love poem
Anemone – a love poem
Such simple chemistry unlocks the bulb’s code – water, light earth, air – so you can hold its flower; like this star-shaped wood anemone cupped in my hand, for you to see.   What makes the heart more than a living pump, this animated lump of vein and blood? What kind of occult key can bare its bud to occupy a season of its own   as if it had been dormant, not a stone? Do not say what comes…
