Waterless Lithography
WATERLESS LITHOGRAPH PRINT OF A CRUSTACEAN/LOBSTER USING AN EXISTING DRAWING

Over the last twelve months I have been getting acquainted with waterless lithography and it’s potential for giving rich results and the ability to produce strong tonal prints. I was lucky enough to spend time working with expert printmaker Mark Hunter on the intricacies of waterless lithography. In this article, I will describe the origins of stone lithography and the relatively more recent developments in waterless lithography, along with exploring the differences between both approaches. I’ll then go on to describe how I applied waterless lithography in my own practice and the most exciting elements I found in the process.
Stone Lithography
Traditional stone lithography was first discovered in 1798 by the German actor and author Alois Senefelder and was used mainly commercially for illustration and reproduction purposes. A flat limestone or metal plate are sponged using water and rolled with an oil-based ink which adheres to the grease loving parts, while the non-image areas are made ink-repellent. Throughout art history, lithography has attracted many fine artists including Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Edvard Munch, Mary Cassatt and Elisabeth Frink to name but a few. The ability to reproduce rich fluid pencil lines and brush marks has made this technique very appealing to draughtsmen and artists over centuries.
Waterless Lithography
Waterless lithography using printer toner is a fairly recent invention discovered in 1990 by the Canadian printmaker and jeweller, Nik Seminoff. It was created through a desire to develop the process using a variety of easily obtained household materials including non-paintable silicon, acetone and printer toner.
The process in it’s simplest form is based on the ability of silicone to rejecting printing ink. It involves drawing or painting onto an offset aluminium plate using toner or a water-soluble pencil and bonding the image to the plate using heat. A thin layer of silicone solution is then applied to create a non-printable area. The plate is left to cure overnight and the toner is washed out using acetone, leaving a ghost like image which can then be inked up using rubber ink and a brayer. The plate is then ready for printing using an etching press or by hand.
What’s the difference?
Waterless Lithography is less labour intensive, using safer less-toxic materials than traditional stone lithography. Whilst maintaining many of the desirable characteristics such as fluidity of line, washes, gradation in tone, textures and reticulation.
Unlike traditional stone lithography, the aluminium plate is light and can be easily transported to any location such as a museum or working outdoors 'en plein air', etc. Until the surface has been bonded to the plate it is very fragile and needs to be transported with care.
The Process
Referring to sketchbooks is a great way to find inspiration in the studio and allows you to play around with composition and colour and revisit unresolved ideas.
My Red Lobster print was inspired by a previous drawing I made on location from a fishing harbour in the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. Here is how I made it.

1
The initial drawing was made directly onto a prepared aluminium plate which has been degreased and treated with sodium metasilicate which helps to bond the silicone to the plate added later in the process. It is important to dry the plate quickly as any streaks left from the sodium could impair the finished print.

2
Once the plate is dry it is ready for the toner solution to be applied. You can use many easily sourced implements to apply the toner including paintbrushes, lollipop sticks, sponges, even a toothbrush can create great splatters and specs. The surface of the plate is easily manipulated and can be washed clean with a damp sponge if you are unhappy with the results. Special pencils called Lumocolor by Staedtler create fantastic fluid lines with subtle gradation in tone when applied with a light touch.
A Sharpie pen can also be used to create solid lines/areas of colour. Rich velvety tones are made using concentrated washes of toner, while reticulation (grain pattern) can be achieved by adding more water to the toner.
I used large paint brushes and applied a concentrated mix of the toner solution to the plate to create the velvety black areas. After it has air dried I worked back into the plate using a lollipop stick to pick out some of the subtle details to the lobster shell. A soluble pencil was used with a wash of water to create the linear shape of the antennas.

3
Once happy with the results, a heat gun is applied to bond the image to the plate and will become glossy when fixed. At this point there is still the opportunity to add to the image if desired, but be sure to heat the plate again if so.

4
A solution of non-paintable silicone and white spirit is mixed to the consistency of runny honey and is spread onto the plate using a tissue, the aim is to cover the whole plate creating a thin film of silicone. Once you are happy that the plate has been evenly covered, buff the surface using a tissue wrapped in a firm sponge. The plate should be left overnight to cure in a well ventilated room. It is important when working with solvents and chemicals to keep the room well ventilated and wear gloves and protective eye wear.

5
The plate is now ready to be washed out using a tissue and acetone, it is important to keep the tissue well soiled as any abrasive material may affect the delicate surface of the plate. Allow the acetone to do all the work. A ghost image will appear and won’t be fully visible until the plate is inked up.

6
Use a rubber based ink such as Van Son Holland. Drag and scrape the ink to create a bead at the top of your workstation unit. A sub-plate is placed under the printing plate which has been coated with silicone to reject the ink from the brayer (roller) when it goes over the edge of the plate.
Once you have inked up the brayer onto your glass plate, roll your brayer onto a corner of the silicone plate to test if it rejects the ink. If it does reject the ink then you are ready to ink up the plate.
It is a good idea to change direction of the brayer to achieve maximum coverage of the image, using a snapping action with the brayer to clean off any unwanted ink on the plate.

7
With the plate inked, we are ready to print. Smooth paper will produce the best results with this method, such as Zerkal and Fabriano 5. It is always a good idea to make a couple of test prints onto newsprint first to gauge how much ink and pressure you should apply.
The application of waterless lithography has allowed me to retain an expressive painterly feel in my work. I would recommend it to anyone wishing to develop their printmaking skills.

1812
This was during the seven years war where in this poticular time period some people turned to art and printmaking as an excapisum one of the people to do this was a man named Thomas Davies. And before the war had acurned he brought some printmaking topographic drawings that he has done and took them to England. He would also try and come up with techniques to engrave some peoples faces on a stone and he would most commonly try to do this with soulders.
1814
Jane Austen Vartions
This Printmaking had clients of royalty Queen Charlotte and sir Joshua Reynolds. This was an amazing accomplished because back then having a wouman in work was seen as popostroras. So not only was this wouman in work she was working with the royal family which was and still is seen as a highly respected job position.
1820
In this time period artist came up with new ideas to work with lightography and one of theses artists where Euquene Delacroix he made some highly produced lightography as illustrations. That was made for Geethens Faust this gig published in 1828 . Because of this lightography was also used in magazines and newspapers as well which relly fit well for this time era.
1826
William Blackes was an illustrator he actually made his last couple of prints in the year 1826. Which was calles Satan smiting which was done with Boils that same year I find this piece of artwork relly interesting.
I836
Winstow Homer us know by many as one of the grates printmakers of the early nineteenth century. He was also america and when he started his early career as a printmaker he works also do oil painting studies to bright his horizons In art and this was in the year 1861.
1838
Am going to be talking about a painting that was called Meiji Emperor and Empress/ autom colours and the artist was a man named Chikanobu Toyohara . This was seen as a romantic piece because of all the bright colours and with a painting with a lot of red in it could also mainly used for Valentine’s Day so there’s a romantic scene that’s already coming together. There was a lot of demand for these printmakers to make a school that was named Ukiyo - printmaking school.
500 the first tecquenique for printmaking where used in Egyptian times what’re they would print is fabric. How they would go about doing this is that they would get a stone and carve into it and then they would put the piece of fradric on top of the wet already carved stone and then put pressure on the fabric and it would make a print.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, most-awaited Nvidia’s flagship gaming GPU might be on its way to the global consumer market. According to Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang, the upcoming Ampere GPU architecture family will be based on 7nm (Nano Meter) architecture GPUs. Current stack of Turing RTX 2000 graphics chips is rocking on 12nm process technology and still provide efficient gaming experience but not good at real-time Ray Tracing rendering in terms of frame rate numbers.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Specs Leaks, Pricing, Release Date
Recent fresh leaked picture snapshot from Chiphell forum indicates that future flagship RTX 3080 monster GPU will likely be using the blower-style cooler for reference cards. Anyway, take this leak with a pinch of salt, sometimes, people make their own cooler and attach to current-gen GPUs as a result claiming the publicity.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Release Date
The RTX 3080 could be revealed as soon as August 2020, with a September release to follow. A late summer reveal would follow in the footsteps of the RTX 2080 series, which was unveiled in August 2018 and sold shortly after. The RTX 20 Super series was released in July 2019.
Given these timeframes, it isn't unreasonable to expect the RTX 3080 (and potentially RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 Ti) to launch by summer 2020. However, it's possible that the coronavirus pandemic has delayed the production of the RTX 3080 to later in the year.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Price
Based on historical pricing, we don't expect the GeForce RYX 3080 or its siblings to come cheap. The RTX 2080 Super currently carries an MSRP of $699, with the 2080 Ti going for around $1,199. On the lower end of Nvidia's current line, the RTX 2060 starts at $299, with the RTX 2070 going for $599.

However, rumor suggests that the RTX 30-series cards could be more affordable than their predecessors. Nvidia may use Samsung's 7nm extreme ultraviolet lightography (EUV) process for manufacturing their new cards, which would allow the RTX 3080 to both offer better performance than previous generations while also making the GPU cheaper to produce.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Specs
While we don't have the specs of the RTX 3080 just yet, we do know it will be based on Nvidia's Ampere graphics technology. according to Nvidia, Ampere is the "largest[7nm] chip ever built" and is built for better AI performance and a speedy 1.6TB per second of memory bandwidth.
A list of rumored specs has popped up on Twitter account KittyCorgi pointing to potential RTX 3080 and 3070 models that would be a big step up from their predecessors.

( 1750 - 500 BCE ) PRINTMAKING
Joelle Simpson
At the nearing of the 16th century and at the very beginning of the 17th where both eras where filled with engravers and illustrators, which was inspired by Fremish influences. But in the middle of the 17th century a French school did not have a major/ masters begree course. Even then it still became a significant phase of European printmaking at the time of that era. One of these influences where Michael Lesne, a French portraitist.
1760’s PRINTMAKING
Joelle Simpson
In the 1760’s an English cartographer named John Spicisbury started to make jigsaws of drawings of maps. He did this by using tolls, map doard games to try and get the most accurate depictions and an man named J.Jeffreys actually made the drawin up maps.
1763 PRINTMAKING
Joelle Simpson
An English printer and type designer who went by the name John Baskerville who was an atheist but he did print a Bible for the university of Cambridge. He did Asoka inhovator which he then believed a really good way to make paper softer and whiter.
1765 PRINTMAKING
Joelle Simpson
This so round about the time era where American newspapers had risen this number is estimated to be 600 to 800. Around that time period it’s been rounded up to have all newspapers in America where 14000 this has been said to be on a weekly basis.
In the same year a famous Japanese printmaker Suzuki Harunoba started to make artwork which are now the famous Nishikie prints. He would use colour in his printed images and how he would do this is by using woodblocks with one colour on eatch one. Which is also sometimes referred to as Edo, which used to be the name of Tokyo.
1772 PRINTMAKING
Joelle Simpson
This was the year when English made the first patent that is issued for colourd inks. And colourd printing that we know today has progressed but this doesn’t mean the inks are better back then they might not be as pure.
1796 PRINTMAKING
Joelle Simpson
Alois Senefelder invented lithography and used it for a low cost way of painting. Lightography was a method that was drawn on a stone. They would then use a coat of wax to print on but before this process they would weat the stone. This method can also get used to create a drawing and then it can get transferred over to a piece of paper.
1798 PRINTMAKING
Joelle Simpson
Giamabattista Bodoni has made a lot of artwork which will carry his legacy lives on which techniques that are frequently used today.
1799 PRINTMAKING
Joelle Simpson
The Frenchman Louis -Nicolas Robert created a paper making machine, he had woven bronze mesh convery helt this is referred to as the wire. This bid get developed more in the 1852 and it’s really similar to which is used in printmaking today this is because printmaking machines are still based on his creation all these years ago.
1800 PRINTMAKING
Joelle Simpson
The type of printmaking that was popular in this year was lightography this is because it was possible to make a lot of prints in a small time frame. And because of this it attached artist form roam they liked the effects that it brought out of the paper they found it really intriguing.
1803 PRINTMAKING
Joelle Simpson
In this year they made the press out of iorn which worked a lot better compared to what they used to use which was a wooden press. So it worked a lot better and you could get cleaner images into the print that you made.
