Translation: No matter how many light years has passed, or how painful it is, it will be worth it if I have you at my destination. Will you wait for me at the edge of the universe? If you’re waiting for me, darling, I’ll do anything to get there. Even if it’s further than that, I’ll reach you. I have only one request. Just still love me the same.)

#70-61
70. Wonderland (7.441) Highest score was 10; Lowest score was 3
This is the only song to not receive a regular placing on the 1989 tour setlist! AYHTDWS, This Love and YAIL both rotated on and off depending on the night, but according to setlist.fm those 3 all at least got a good number of performances, while poor Wonderland only got a whopping 4 times in the spotlight. Wonderland used to be a favourite of mine on 1989, but unfortunately for me I think it has aged a bit poorly.
Highlighted comments: @corneliaavenue: “can someone please tell me what you hear in this song?” @yourivysgrows: “This didn't deserve to be a bonus track”
69. False God (7.447) Highest score was 10; Lowest score was 3.9
Haha, nice.
Highlighted comments: @corneliaavenue: “PUSSY IS GOD” @yourivysgrows: “This murdered me”
68. mad woman (7.459) Highest score was 10; Lowest score was 4.5
The first time we heard the fuck word from Taylor! And what a great fuck word it was. mad woman is, in my opinion, by far the greatest song about sexism that Taylor has ever written. The simmering rage that lingers beneath the whole thing, the way she drags Scooter through the mud... *chefs kiss*
Highlighted comments: @yourivysgrows: “fuck you forever”
67. The Way I Loved You (7.488) Highest score was 9; Lowest score was 5.9
We need to start a support group for people who took way too long to realise this song was about two different guys. By people I mean me, but also please tell me I’m not the only one. I was so confused for so long with this song.
Highlighted comments: @corneliaavenue: “banger of a song but -2 for promoting toxic relationships :/”
66. Back to December (7.494) Highest score was 10; Lowest score was 3
This is a great song, but honestly after hearing the mashup with Apologise and You’re Not Sorry from the Speak Now tour, I cannot listen to any other version. I also remember some weird story about how Taylor Lautner attended a Speak Now Tour date and was witnessed muttering “it’s too late” under his breath during the performance, which now that I’m repeating it sounds so obviously like fanfiction but 12 year old me bought into it back when Taylor Squared was THE ship.
Highlighted comments: @corneliaavenue: “rip tay²” @yourivysgrows: “Track 5 energy (a yes)”
65. Come Back... Be Here (7.519) Highest score was 10; Lowest score was 3
Remember when we begged and begged and got Taylor to relearn the lyrics to this song so she could perform it on Rep Tour? Good times.
Highlighted comments: @yourivysgrows: “Due to my long distance relationship this one hit home” @everfolk: “God tier song” @liabilitys: “one of my fav songs but v underrated”
64. New Year’s Day (7.544) Highest score was 10; Lowest score was 1
I think the perception of this song is harmed by how the sessioners hyped it up as “the new All Too Well”. Which I mean, is just wrong, but I can’t blame them - if I had heard “hold on to the memories they will hold onto you” in Taylor Swift’s house I would probably burst into tears every time I heard it afterwards too. In all seriousness, I think this is a great end to reputation, its calm and understatedness is perfect alongside the aggressive cacaphony that makes up most of the rest of the album.
Highlighted comments: @yourivysgrows: “The most beautiful closer” @corneliaavenue: “it is a little boring, but i like the lyrics”
63. Christmas Tree Farm (7.559) Highest score was 10; Lowest score was 5.15
This is so fun and wholesome, it almost inspired me to make myself a Christmas playlist. I don’t even listen to 99% of Christmas music, so the playlist would pretty much just consist of this, All I Want For Christmas Is You and Santa Tell Me by Ariana Grande.
Highlighted comments: @itspeterlosingwendy: “the only song I listen to at christmas” @treacherousdemo: “that intro is the best thing she's ever done.. i stand by this” @leadinmeon: “i don't even celebrate xmas. but this song is so cute”
62. Sad Beautiful Tragic (7.572) Highest score was 10; Lowest score was 4.6
I used to be attacked for saying I didn’t like this song, to the point where I was bullied into liking it </3 Half joking, this song has actually grown on me a lot! But can we just admit it is a tad too slow and dare I say... verges on being boring?
Highlighted comments: @leadinmeon: “same as last kiss: lyrically iconic, musically boring to listen to” @liabilitys: “another fav”
61. Dancing with Our Hands Tied (7.581) Highest score was 10; Lowest score was 5
If the album version was the acoustic version, I would’ve given this a much higher score. But the production... after listening to 10 previous songs full of heavy synths and drops, I frankly just get tired of that by this point in the album, and DWOHT does that style a lot worse than the other songs, in my opinion. The acoustic version is very nice though.
Highlighted comments: @yourivysgrows: “I would die for this song I think”

glitter + crimson (let’s start a riot)//part five
summary: in the aftermath of hurricane agatha, the pogues are thrown into a mess none of them are ready to deal with. things that don’t exactly top sailor’s ‘fun things to do this summer’ list: surfing in the middle of a hurricane, getting punched in the face by a stupid kook, and stumbling upon a mystery that turns her and her friends into the damn scooby gang. when she said she wanted an exciting summer, she should’ve been more specific. 🙃
word count: 8.1k+ (it just keeps getting longer and longer 😅)
ship: jj maybank x oc (sailor flynn)
warnings n stuff: mentions of abuse/neglect/gambling addiction, child abandonment, anxiety, self-worth issues, jj being both soft af and hot for his best friend, weed usage, underage drinking, unresolved sexual tension, sailor being thirsty, swearing, guns, fighting, blood, that one trope where two characters only call each other by their nicknames/last names until they don’t because of ~reasons~ that makes me lose my shit every time (like a lot of the obx fandom, i also headcanon that jj stands for jesse james), references to the three stooges (jj=moe, pope=larry, and john b=curly and that’s a fact lmao), to all the boys i've loved before, avengers infinity war, and david attenborough, and a line heavily inspired/influenced by taylor swift's "dress" (a song that happens to be on the playlist for this series)
a/n: we’re finally entering canon territory, y’all (with a few tweaks, of course!) but i’m determined not to make this a rehash/retelling word for word of the show ‘cause that’s just no fun, so expect smaller pieces (vignettes, i guess?) of storytelling as i expand on canon with sailor and the rest of the pogues. think of it like a mixtape of sorts, but with words instead of music if that makes sense lol. this part originally covered episodes one and two but i wrote so much that i had to split it, so we're just covering most of episode one for now (i still can't even believe how much shit actually goes down in the pilot lol). i was veryyyy excited to write the kegger at the boneyard 'cause some ~juicy~ stuff happens there lol. fun fact: the title of this part is a term used by surfers to refer to getting up at the ass crack of dawn to hit the waves. as always, this is unbetaed so any mistakes are mine. enjoy!

part five: dawn patrol
The next morning, Hurricane Agatha hits the island with all the force of a knockout punch; the sound of rain pounding against the roof echoes impossibly loud throughout the Chateau but Sailor’s bewildered shriek is even louder.
“You’re gonna what the what?!”
John B shrugs as the stunned redhead, lounging on the couch, looks away from watching the storm and fixes him with a wide-eyed stare.
“I’m gonna surf the surge.”
“Hell yeah, bro!” JJ yells from his spot as her footrest, punching his fist in the air and she sends him an exasperated look, both at his enthusiastic encouragement of John B’s downright moronic idea and the fact that she already misses the feeling of his thumb drawing circles on her bare ankle.
“Are you two insane?”
“Possibly.” John B states, grinning when JJ follows that up with, “Absolutely.” The blond boy pushes Sailor’s legs off his lap as he stands which earns him another displeased scowl from the redhead. “Come on, Sail. Live a little.”
“Oh, I’ll live alright, but you idiots won’t,” She takes his offered hand, letting him pull her to her feet and then down the hall after John B as she continues, “because this is the dumbest idea you’ve ever had.”
“See, this is why we keep you around,” He replies, laughing when she dodges his attempt to ruffle her hair and dashes forward to beat him to the spare room. “We do something stupid, you and Kie read us the riot act. It’s tradition.”
Sailor grabs her long-sleeved rash vest -if she’s going to sit on the beach to keep an eye on these fools in the middle of a damn hurricane, at least she’ll wear something that offers a little bit of warmth- and heads to the bathroom to change. “Yeah, and then I’m there to patch you up when you inevitably hurt yourselves.”
“Can’t help that you have that healing touch.” His cheeky response floats through the closed door and she catches herself smiling -wide and just a little bit sappy- in the mirror.
After a quick detour to pick up Pope, who’s already drenched from sneaking out his window, the pogues (sans Kiara who never answered John B’s text in the group chat and, knowing her parents, was probably on hurricane lockdown) head to the beach, where the rugged gray surf hammers against the shore with unrelenting brutality. Sailor trails behind the others as they grab their boards and make a break for the water, blatantly ignoring the barriers that read ‘beach closed’ in large, impossible to miss letters. A few hundred feet down the coast, she can barely make out The Sandbar all boarded up for the storm and she thinks of her mother, wondering if she's riding it out inside or at home; either way Carmen's all alone and Sailor's stomach twists with guilt, both for letting her phone battery die so she didn't have to answer her calls and for leaving in the first place, even though it was the right thing to do for her damn sanity.
“These signs are here for a reason, guys!” She calls over the howling wind, squinting through the rain at the rough waves with her hands tapping uneasily against her thighs. Watching John B run into the ocean with reckless abandon (Pope following with a little more caution, thankfully) immediately puts her anxiety on edge so she sits down heavily on the wet sand, wrapping her arms around the knees pulled to her chest and looks up at the blond boy who stayed behind. “Aren’t you gonna join the other stooges?”
JJ shrugs at her question, glancing out toward their friends before dropping his board to the ground and taking a seat behind the trembling girl, his chest to her back. “This one can’t just leave you hanging out here all alone, lookin’ all sad and shit. It’s kind of pathetic.”
“Wow, you really know how to make a girl feel special, J.” She smirks and scoots back in the sand, lips curling into a full-fledged smile when he lifts his arms to drape them over her shoulders. As he tucks her securely against his front, the warmth of his body helps ward off the biting chill of the rain, and so does the fact that he knows her so well, that he knows this is exactly what she needs to help calm the panicking butterflies in her stomach.
He leans close, lips brushing against the shell of her ear when he whispers his next words like a secret, low and just for her even when there’s no one around to hear them. “Trust me, Sail, you ain’t seen nothing yet.”
She suddenly finds those butterflies in her stomach fluttering for a whole different reason.
-
The Chateau sits in complete darkness, the power having been knocked out since they returned from dropping Pope off at his house that afternoon. Sailor thinks it’s about ten at night as she lies on her back on the mattress of the sleeper sofa, listening to the wind rip through the trees outside with Binx curled up at her feet. The spare room was way too hot without a working fan, even after she braided her hair off to the side and changed into a crop top and shorts, so she and JJ had returned to the living room where it was cooler, if only by a little bit.
John B has already retreated to his room for the night; he’d been acting quieter than usual since their little adventure at the beach but between a lantern-lit dinner of semi-stale cereal and passing a joint around, she never got the chance to ask if he was okay before he made his escape. JJ lies beside her with his limbs all askew and from the slow rise and fall of his bare chest she’s 99% sure he’s out like a light until, out of the blue, he mutters into the stagnant air, “Can’t keep your eyes off me, huh?”
She blinks heavily -that weed must’ve hit her harder than she thought because she hadn’t even realized she’d been staring- when he lazily turns his head to stare back, a halcyon grin on his face and in the dark, his pupils are blown so wide she can barely see the blue of his irises. Her hand itches with a longing to sweep that one stubborn strand of hair away from his forehead but instead she blindly slides it to the left until she finds his and holds on tight; his fingers automatically lace with hers even as the space between his eyebrows furrows and the smile falls from his lips.
“Sail?”
“I don’t think my dad’s ever coming back.” The redhead’s mouth blurts before her brain can catch up, heavy words lingering like a storm cloud ready to downpour. The thought had been weighing on her heart for a while now, from when she’d first suspected it two months ago, and it feels bittersweet to finally admit it out loud, even when she hadn’t planned doing it.
Her bedmate is silent for a long time as he looks at her through the shadows and she focuses on the touch of his palm against hers instead of the awful mounting pressure behind her eyes -hadn’t she promised herself she was done crying over her dad?- until he asks quietly, “Why? I mean, good riddance 'cause he's kind of the worst, but why?"
“A feeling,” She murmurs around the sudden lump in her throat, biting the inside of her lip hard enough that she tastes the metallic tang of blood on her tongue. “He...he usually comes back after a month or two but this time it’s been almost five.” A bitter laugh escapes from her chest and she shakes her head. “I guess he finally decided he’s done dealing with my worthless ass.”
JJ’s eyes flash like lightning as he rolls over to face her, the hand not entwined with hers reaching up to cup her cheek. “Sail, shut up. Don’t you dare say that.”
“Why shouldn’t I? It’s true,” She says sharply, words acerbic and biting and full of a self-hatred that’s been poisoning her heart ever since she was old enough -eight and far, far too young- to discern the way her dad’s love for her was fickle at best, non-existent at worst. “I could’ve been a better daughter- a perfect daughter- and he might still be here and my mom wouldn't hate me. I should’ve tried harder-”
“Jesus Christ, Sailor!” He interrupts, calloused yet gentle thumb wiping away the tears she just now registers sliding down her cheeks and the shock of hearing her full name come from his mouth makes the rest of her vitriolic thoughts fly out the window. “Do you even hear yourself right now?”
The image of him blurs through the darkness in shades of black and she closes her eyes, jaw clenched in an attempt to quell the tremble of her lip as he goes on in his low, soft voice, “You should’ve tried harder to do what, huh? What could you have possibly done better?”
She’s quiet for a long time, so long that her tears run dry and all that remains is smeared salt on her skin because she doesn’t have an answer. What could she have done? That terrible thought in her mind rears it’s ugly head again, the one that tells her she’s not good enough, that everything’s her fault because she doesn’t do enough, but when she asks it what more she can do, there’s no reply. There never is.
“Hey, look at me.” She hears the rustling of sheets and feels his fingers slip from hers before they come to rest on her cheek, both hands now cradling her face; she opens her eyes to find him hovering over her and the sheer lack of distance between them makes her heart skip a beat. “You...”
“What about me?” Her voice cracks as she speaks and in a mirror of her from earlier, JJ shakes his head, causing that stubborn strand of hair to once again fall into his eyes.
“I wish you’d see yourself the way I do.”
Her breath catches in her throat. “And how do you see me?”
“Fucking amazing.” He says simply and in the dark, she can barely see the flush slowly starting to creep up his neck. “Smart, brave, and loyal as hell. A beautiful badass who doesn’t take shit from anybody. A girl who listens when someone needs to be heard.”
The redhead stares up at him with wide green eyes as he goes on and on, listing all these wonderful little things that her traitorous mind has a hard time processing, let alone believing; he really thinks about her like this? “You care so damn much,” “You’re kind but not afraid speak out,” “You’re the one I trust the most.”
Her hand slowly releases its tight grip on the sheets and slides up his bare arm, feeling the heat of his skin under her palm as she touches his face, not trusting herself to speak because she’s so afraid of saying something dumb or stupid and ruining everything ('like I always do,' her mind echoes).
“You’re my best friend, Sailor, and yeah, you’re not perfect. You drink and you smoke weed and you don’t get straight As in school but fuck, you’re real and so not worthless.” He says each word with such conviction that its impossible not to believe him, as much as her brain screams at her not to. “And I want you to know that what your parents think of you doesn't matter at all, got it?"
Without warning, she flings her arms around his neck and JJ loses his balance, falling onto her with a soft oof of surprise but Sailor doesn’t even feel the extra weight as she rests her face against his shoulder and finally finds her voice. “Thank you.”
He takes her with him when he rolls onto his side, arms wrapped tight around her waist and nose buried in her messy braid. “Just...trying to do the right thing, I guess. For once.”
She pulls back at his words, then leans forward and slowly presses her lips to his flushed cheek, just missing the corner of his mouth. She lets them linger for a beat longer than necessary before leaning back -not too far, just enough- and looking him in the eye. “Thank you, Jesse.”
He usually hates being called by his first name (she found that out pretty quickly into their friendship, “never call me Jesse” being one of the first things he ever said to her) but he just looks at her with a soft, endearing smile on his face as he leans back onto the bed, once again bringing her with him. “Promise me something, Sail?”
She glances up at him from his shoulder and meets his eyes. “Yeah?”
His fingers tuck an escaped red curl behind her ear. “Just...be you. Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks.”
She wishes it were that easy, that she could just step inside her mind and flip a switch and she could stop all those thoughts that’ve plagued her for years but it’s not. It’s gonna take time -time and a lot of patience and maybe even a miracle- but damn it, she’s gonna give it her all, not just for herself but for him and the rest of the pogues, too, the best friends she's ever had, so she nods and settles back down at his side. “I’ll try my best, J.”
“I know you will.”

"Sail, you're the best swimmer out of all of us. Think you can dive down there and check it out?"
The redhead peers over the edge of the HMS Pogue and into the water, where the murky shape of the sunken Grady-White sits thirty feet down on the bottom of the marsh, then nods at the rest of the pogues, an excited grin on her face.
"No problem," She answers John B, hopping up onto the very tip of the boat's bow with practiced ease before diving headfirst into the water to JJ's yell of "diver down!" It's dirtier than usual because of the hurricane but she doesn't let that stop her as she swims down and down until she reaches the top of the boat and pulls herself the rest of the way onto the deck, carefully scanning the area for...fuck. Honestly, she's got absolutely no clue what she's looking for but she assumes she'll know when she sees it.
'It' turns out to be a motel key, resting all alone on the floor by the steering wheel and she quickly reaches out to snatch it, sliding the silver key ring around her finger securely. When she pushes off toward the surface, she leaves the ghostly Grady-White behind with more questions than answers.
The rest of her friends are lined up in a row along the boat's railing, all staring at her with near identical expressions of anticipation as she breaks through the water and holds the key aloft with a triumphant smile.
"The Summer Winds Motel called, they want their key back!"
-
A little later that evening, Sailor would really regret finding that damn key but right now, she's having a great time dancing at the Boneyard with Kiara at the traditional post-hurricane kegger, second refill of beer in hand, spiked with Fireball from the flask tucked in her back pocket. To her, dancing's a lot like surfing -steady feet, swiveling hips, snapping shoulders- and she thinks that might be the reason she's so bad at it, anticipating the fluidity of water instead of the solidness of dry land. Or it could be that she just doesn't have rhythm when she's a little buzzed. That works, too.
"Ow, Sail!" Kiara winces as the redhead steps on her foot again, rolling her eyes fondly when she throws her head back with a loud, tipsy giggle.
"My bad, Kie!" She twirls in the sand, hair dancing around her shoulders like fire, and finds herself spinning right into a herd of dancing tourons, all too drunk to care that she's spilling her beer all over their feet. Large, olive-skinned hands grab her waist to spin her again and she laughs, smiling over her shoulder at a cute dark-haired touron as he slides one palm over to settle against the bare skin of her lower back. She pushes one hand on his shoulder with just enough resistance that he doesn't get too close into her personal space as he leans in to speak in a low Southern drawl, brown eyes turned a pretty bronze in the glow of the nearby bonfire.
"This probably isn't the best thing to say to a beautiful girl but you kind of dance like a giraffe."
Sailor bursts out laughing at that. "Hey, I think giraffes are very elegant creatures so I'll take that as a compliment!"
The boy grins and she smiles, too, letting him take her free hand and pull her into the throng of dancing bodies. He's almost as bad a dancer as she is but he's fun to talk to and together they gleefully show off their worst moves until their feet hurt -she's lost count of how many times she stepped on his toes- and her solo cup is empty. "Come on," She says and this time, she's the one to grab his hand and lead him over to the closest keg, where John B's dishing out beer with an expert flourish.
"'Sup, Sail," He lifts his chin in greeting as he fills her cup, smirking when she immediately pulls out her flask and adds a long pour of Fireball on top. "Who's your friend?"
"JB, this is Adam, he's visiting from Tennessee. Adam, meet John B, one of my best friends and a total moron," She makes quick introductions, smiling into her drink as he scowls and playfully sprays some beer at her feet before filling another cup and holding it out to the other boy with a jab at her expense.
"Be careful around her, man. She's a handful."
The touron accepts the drink with a shrug and a quick wink in her direction. "Good thing I happen to like 'em a little crazy."
Ugh. More than a little miffed at that, she rolls her eyes and takes a long sip of beer to hide her annoyance when Adam laughs and slings his arm around her shoulders. Calling her a giraffe was actually kind of cute in a very weird, endearing way but he instantly lost whatever points he had with her the second that 'c' word came out of his pretty mouth. She glances around the Boneyard while the boys start talking about surfing (she scoffs to herself, what does a farm kid from Tennessee know about that?), scanning the crowd for the rest of her friends and a chance to ditch him. Kiara's sitting on a big piece of driftwood, chatting up a stunning, deeply tan girl with glossy black hair -she waves when their eyes meet and shoots Sailor a cheeky grin before returning to her conversation- while the ever awkward Pope seems to be stuck in the middle of one of his rambles about autopsies as he stands around the fire, the willowy blonde beside him looking more and more uncomfortable by the second. She'd deliberately lost track of JJ a while ago, after she watched him getting a little too close to a tiny brunette, his hand low on her back as she passed him a drink and ran her fingers up his bare arm, coaxing that killer smile of his onto his face (that girl may have gotten his smile but Sailor got his eyes and they watched her until she pointedly turned away).
Honestly, she's a bit -okay, a lot- peeved. Here she is, thinking that they're the closest they've ever been before (they've always been close, ever since that day in sixth grade, but this is a whole different kind of close), and just when she feels like she may finally be ready to admit some things, some feelings, he's off doing who knows what with another girl; to be fair, she's off with another guy that she'd, until a minute ago, fully planned on kissing, but that's only because of him! Him and some weird need she has to keep him looking at her, to make him jealous -she shakes her head and takes another swig of her whiskey-spiked beer. Nope, nope, not gonna think about that.
Poor Pope looks like he's really struggling so Sailor pushes all thoughts of her blond best friend from her mind and goes to rescue him, ducking out from under Adam's sweaty arm and walking away without a backwards glance, ignoring the confusion in his voice as he calls her name. She pushes through the crowd to her friend and steps right in front of the girl he's trying to talk to, grabbing his hand with her free one.
"Come dance with me?"
The smile of pure relief that breaks out over his face makes her own widen as he lets her pull him back through the mass of bodies to a less-crowded part of the make-shift dance floor, the tension bleeding out of his hunched shoulders with every step.
"You're an angel, Sailor."
She laughs and wraps her arm around his shoulders, leading him in a carefree twirl across the cool sand. "Tell me something I don't know."
Like a leaf caught up in a whirlwind, he's helpless to resist her infectious joy as they dance, grinning like fools and poking fun at each other; for a while, the redhead tries to forget about stupid, clueless boys and focuses on Pope who, while still a clueless boy, doesn't expect anything from her but pure, unconditional friendship that she's all too willing to give (although she did have a teensy little crush on him when they first became friends, she got over it pretty fast the second he started talking about the bodily functions of dead bodies in explicit detail). She shares her drink with him, giggling at the way his face morphs from curiosity to disgust to delight at the taste of her cinnamon beer concoction and lets him down the rest while she drinks straight from the flask that she pulls from her back pocket.
"You've got a shadow." Pope says, slightly nodding his chin over her shoulder and she takes his hand again, slowly spinning herself under his arm to take a quick glance, rolling her eyes when she spots Adam staring at her from the edge of the crowd. "You know him?"
"Unfortunately. Thought he was cute, then he called me crazy." She tucks the whiskey away with a shrug at her friend's sympathetic wince, then steps closer to him and raises a conspiratorial eyebrow. "Wanna help me tell him to take a long walk off a short cliff?"
"Uh-"
"I think I can help with that," A familiar voice cuts off Pope's reply as JJ suddenly appears at her side, slipping his hand into her back pocket to spin her right into the circle of his arms before he plucks the flask from the other and takes a big sip in one smooth kinda sexy move. "Straight Fireball? Damn, Sail."
The redhead carefully schools her features into a blank mask but her body has other ideas, one hand instantly settling on his chest like it's second nature and her face flushing from more than just the alcohol as she casually replies, "You know I like things a little spicy." Completely aware of the way he's watching her every move, she snatches the whiskey back and downs the little bit that's left, trying and failing to ignore the thrill that shoots through her at those bright blue eyes of his darkening when her tongue darts out to lick her lips. Pope rolls his eyes at them both before muttering a quick 'see ya' and hastily melting back into the crowd.
"So, who're we telling to fuck off?" His voice is just a little strained and she feels her cool facade start to crack as she scowls, subtly tilts her head toward where Adam's still staring at her with an expression that looks like he ate a sour lemon. JJ spins her around to take a very conspicuous peek and her mouth curls into a grin, mask breaking completely when he shoots the touron a glare that screams 'try me, I dare you'; the heat from his hand still in her pocket burns as he leans in until his forehead rests on hers. "Let's give him a show."
Sailor hums and pretends to mull it over even as she coyly snakes her arms around his neck and pulls him closer, the harder panes of his body sliding almost sinfully against her softer curves as they sway together, "I don't know, you looked pretty cozy with that other girl earlier..." Is it kind of petty to bring it up? Yes, yes it is, but she can't resist toying with him like he did to her, just as she can't help the breathless gasp that escapes her lips when his fingers press hard into the toned flesh of her ass through her shorts.
"Why, Flynn, are you jealous?"
"Please, I saw that glare you gave him. If anyone's jealous, it's you, Maybank." She fires back while carding both hands through his hair and the pure gratification she feels at his slight shiver is nothing short of euphoric. Out of the corner of her eye, she barely takes notice of the frown Adam sends their way before he turns and stalks off toward the other side of the beach; honestly, she's so caught up in JJ and everything about him -the slow swing of his hips, the hands burning hot against the strip of her back exposed by her crop top, the darkened look in those ocean eyes- that she'd completely forgotten about the touron she danced with earlier in an effort to forget the boy she's dancing with now. She should've known it wouldn't have worked: Sailor could never forget JJ, no matter how hard she tries. He's like a permanent mark on her, a tattoo inked in gold, a beautiful, wonderous scar that she never wants to fade away.
"Seems like we scared him off so I don't have to worry about that anymore." His flushed face is so close she can feel his breath on her lips as he speaks and her eyes quickly flick down to his mouth on their own accord.
"And what about me?" She asks, twirling her fingers in the hair at the nape of his neck, heart beating fast in anticipation as he smirks wickedly at the way her own face turns cherry red.
"Sail, babe, you don't have to worry about a damn thing."
All one of them has to do is tilt their head and everything will fall into place and she can once again know what it's like to kiss him-
"Let it go, Topper!" A sudden, annoyed shout breaks the two apart before they can close that final distance (Sailor's not sure who would've made the first move and she's both relieved and disappointed they won't get to find out), turning away from each other in tandem toward the gathering mass of bodies chanting 'fight, fight!' at the shoreline.
"JB, he's not worth it!" At the sound of Kiara's voice, they take off running across the sand and shove their way to the front of the crowd just in time to see Topper Thornton in all his frat boy glory get absolutely slammed with a hard punch to the jaw, courtesy of John B. The kook barely hits the ground before he's back on his feet and lunging forward to tackle him into the water, landing a hit of his own square in the eye.
"What the hell happened?" Sailor grabs Kiara's elbow and the dark haired girl looks at her with wide eyes as the boys continue to roll around, exchanging brutal blows while a stunned Pope watches from her other side.
"I don't even know, they just started wailing on each other!"
JJ stands silent to Sailor's right, jaw clenched and hands curled into fists as he stares at the brawl and she reaches over to wrap her fingers around his wrist, thumb calmly running circles on his skin.
"Top, seriously! Stop it!" Sarah Cameron stands in the sand just before the crashing waves, yelling furiously at her boyfriend and throwing her arms in the air when he ignores her. "What is wrong with you?"
The moment Topper lands three punches in a row on John B's battered face, Sailor decides she's seen enough. She rushes forward without thinking to grab the blond boy's arm, pulling as hard as she can in an attempt to get him off her friend and barely has time to register what's happening when the fist he was aiming at John B suddenly swings at her. It connects solidly with her left cheek and makes her stumble back, her hand flying to her throbbing face before she goes down hard onto her butt in the surf.
"What the fuck, Thornton?"
"Did you just punch a girl?"
"Ohhhh shit!"
A cacophony of voices yells from the shore as the kook boy stares down at her, momentarily stunned when he realizes who exactly he hit, and it gives John B an opening to wrestle him back into the water and land a solid punch right to his nose. Everything happens so fast after that that the redhead, still reeling in a wide-eyed daze, has a little trouble keeping up. First, Kiara and Pope splash through the waves to her side, kneeling down to help her to her feet with their arms around her waist. Second, Topper gains the upper hand and straight up tries to drown John B, holding his head under the water while Sarah screams at him to stop. And third, JJ -reckless, bold, protective JJ- pulls out that damn stolen gun, effectively bringing the whole mess to a grinding halt when he stalks forward and presses the barrel to the side of Topper's head.
"Your move, broski." He threatens and the beach is so quiet everyone can hear the click of the safety being switched off. The kook slowly raises his hands in the air and John B emerges from the water, stumbling forward onto his hands and knees with a horrible wet cough.
It's all too much for Sailor's poor tipsy self to take. The world spins beneath her feet as her head starts to pound and her shaking fingers fail to find purchase on Kiara's and Pope's shoulders.
"Guys, I don't feel so good," She manages to whisper and their looks of concern (the former) and panic (the latter) are the last thing she sees before her legs give out and everything goes black.
-
The first thing she registers is the pain that radiates from the left side of her face, her whole head throbbing with every beat of her heart and the sound of loud whispering right by her ear isn't helping at all.
"That's the best you can do, J? Seriously?"
"The power's out! I can't exactly pull ice out of my ass, Kie."
Something semi-cold gently rests against her cheek and she audibly sighs at the little bit of relief she feels, her hand sluggishly rising to hold it a little closer as she mumbles, "I wouldn't want your ass ice anyway." At least she tries to: her mouth feels like it's full of cotton and she's pretty sure the only thing that comes out is unintelligible gibberish.
Sailor opens her eyes and finds herself lying on her back on the sleeper sofa at the Chateau, a passed out John B to her right. Pope sits on the edge of the mattress by his side, holding a beer bottle to his friend's black eye and he sends her a relieved smile when he notices she's awake.
"There she is," JJ says from her other side and she turns to face him, not at all surprised to find him already looking at her, and the unabashed concern in his eyes sends a golden warmth through her whole body. Her fingers slip down the hand that's still holding the bottle to her cheek so she can run her thumb over the delicate bones in his wrist in a silent thank you.
A different, softer hand rests on her knee and she tears her gaze away from his face to smile at Kiara as she says, "Good to see you're okay, Sail."
The redhead sinks back into the pillow in embarrassment and covers her eyes with her free hand. God, she really passed out, didn't she? She passed out after taking one lousy punch to the face by a fucking kook, no less. How completely mortifying. She swallows thickly and sounds like a chain smoker when she says, "I'm so sorry, guys. I'm a total idiot."
The other three conscious pogues start protesting all at once -apparently there's many, many, different ways to say she's not an idiot- and the resulting volume of their combined voices is enough to make her headache even worse. She sits up and scoots back until she's propped against the couch and sets the now warm beer on the side table before massaging both of her temples.
"Will you please shut up, I can feel my brain beating in my skull."
For a second, there's wonderful, blissful silence and then:
"Holy shit, thank you," A groggy voice says to her right and she turns to watch a bleary-eyed John B claw his way back to consciousness. "You guys are fucking loud."
"He lives!" JJ shouts, ignoring the four glares sent his way and reaching over to clap his hand against the brunet boy's shoulder. "Welcome back, dude."
"Ugh," He suddenly rolls onto his stomach -Pope deftly catching the bottle when it nearly falls from the bed- and his muffled voice floats out from the pillow he shoves his head under like an ostrich in the sand. "Knock me back out."
"Aww, poor baby." Sailor gives his back a sympathetic pat and chuckles softly when he blindly feels around for her arm, pushing it away with another deep groan and a 'fuck off, Sail' that lacks any type of venom.
"Okay, now that you're both kind of conscious, let's agree that neither of you will ever fucking do that again. Got it?" Kiara addresses John B and Sailor as she stands from the bed and crosses her arms, fixing the latter with a piercing look that makes her feel like a kid caught with her hand in the cookie jar; she opens her mouth to defend herself but before she can say anything, Kiara turns her furious gaze to JJ and points an accusing finger at his face. "And you! What the hell were you thinking pulling that damn gun out, huh?"
"Jesus Christ, Kie!" He suddenly rockets to his feet and throws his hands in the air. "Sail got socked in the face and JB was getting fucking drowned, I wasn't really thinking much at all!”
The dark haired girl can't seemed to think of a response to that and looks away, staring at the floor with her jaw clenched as Pope, ever the mediator, rises to his feet, too, and rounds the bed to step between them placatingly.
"Let's just drop it for tonight, okay? They need to rest." He says, nodding toward the two still on the bed before wrapping his hand around Kiara's elbow and turning her toward the front door. She immediately pulls her arm from his grasp but still nods in agreement, the hard look in her eyes softening when she glances at her injured friends.
"Yeah, okay." She says and glances down at her watch, wincing when she catches sight of the time. "My parents'll kill me if I'm not home soon, anyway."
"Come on, I'll take you guys home." JJ says with a conciliatory look in her direction as Pope tosses him the Volkswagen's keys from his pocket and when she nods back, a small smile pulling at the corner of her mouth, Sailor knows that all is forgiven, at least for now.
"Are you sure you're good to drive?" She asks and immediately rolls her eyes at his sarcastic reply of "Yes, Mom," and the obnoxious wink he shoots her.
The trio leaves after a quick round of goodbyes and John B waits until he hears the sound of his van driving away before finally emerging from under the pillow and rolling onto his back.
"Sensing the immediate danger has passed, the ostrich cautiously pulls its head out from the sand..." She says in her best David Attenborough impression, laughing when he tosses the pillow at her head with an amused grin.
"Ha ha. I was trying to avoid getting a Kie lecture," He explains, running both hands down his face with a heavy sigh. "It feels like my head's gonna explode."
"You and me both, dude." She carefully probes at her swollen cheek and is more than a little surprised to feel the beginnings of a scab forming near her eye. She knew Topper landed a solid punch but she didn't realize how solid that hit was until now as she catches sight of the tiny bit of drying blood left behind on her fingertips.
"That looks like it hurts. You okay?" John B asks and she looks up from wiping her hand clean on her shorts, stiff from dried saltwater, with a wrinkle of her freckled nose.
"I'm alright. How about you? No offense but your eye looks like shit."
"I'll live." He answers with a shrug as he pulls himself upright on the mattress and leans his head against the back of the couch. "Thanks, by the way."
"For what?"
He sluggishly turns his head to look Sailor in the eye and shrugs again. "For trying to help me out. Sorry I got you punched."
She smirks and reaches over to give his hand a brief, friendly squeeze as she replies, "It's not your fault I got myself punched. I'm sorry your ass almost drowned."
He snorts at that and she's relieved to hear it, knowing that he can still joke around and he's not, like, completely traumatized or something. Poor guy's already got enough to deal with without adding a mental breakdown to the list. She swings her legs over the edge of the mattress and slowly stands before taking a tentative step forward; when her knees hold and she doesn't fall flat on her face, she makes her way to his side and holds both hands out to him with a small, lighthearted smile.
"Yeah, you're delirious. Near death experiences do that to you." She says, helping him to his feet and, after looping his arm over her shoulders and sliding hers around his waist, the two teenagers carefully shuffle down the hall in the dim light of the emergency lantern on the kitchen table to his room, where she unceremoniously dumps him onto his bed. "Sleep it off. And for the love of God, please change. You smell terrible."
She goes to leave as he laughs again, tugging his shirt off and tossing it into the growing pile of clothes near the closet before saying, "Hey, Sailor?"
The redhead pauses with one foot in the hall and leans against the doorframe. "Yeah?"
"You know you're a badass, right?"
She laughs and sends him a wink but her heart is oh so light as she turns and heads to the spare room, calling back over her shoulder, "Nice to see someone acknowledge it. Now go to bed!"
-
The sound of the Chateau's front door opening and closing startles Sailor awake and she blinks heavily, wondering when exactly she'd fallen asleep. Last thing she remembers she was staring out at the fireflies through the open window as she steadily ran her hand down the length of Binx's back and their ethereal glow, combined with the breeze dancing around her shoulders, must've pulled her right under. Down the hall, she hears a loud thump, followed by JJ cursing as he runs into something and she giggles to herself, rolling onto her side to face the hall. He appears in the darkened doorway a minute later, rubbing his knee with a scowl on his face and she laughs louder at his quiet, venomous hiss of "fuck that fucking chair."
"Rude. It's not the chair's fault you always run into it." She teases and he shoots her a flat, unamused look before turning to glance down the hall toward John B's room, his fingers holding tight to the door frame.
"He's okay, you know. Told him to get some sleep." His head swings to face her when she speaks with soft words and even in the dark, she can see the way his tense shoulders slowly relax and his hand loosens, falling back to his side as he nods, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him.
"And you?" He asks, his eyes never wavering from hers as he kicks his boots off and pulls his shirt over his head; the sight of his messy hair and the muscles in his arms make it a little hard for Sailor to breathe, the gentle wind she once thought of as cool now doing nothing to help calm her flushed skin when she scoots over in bed to give him room to lie down next to her. Binx looks as disgruntled as a cat can look as he loses his comfy spot and jumps down from the bed, only to immediately leap onto the windowsill and stretch out.
"What about me?"
JJ rolls over to face her, reaching one hand up to cup her injured face and runs his calloused thumb under the cut on her cheekbone. "Are you okay?"
Nodding, she shifts closer and lays her head on his outstretched arm, covering his hand with her own and effortlessly fitting her fingers into the spaces between his. "I'm fine. Even better, now."
He leans forward to rest his forehead against hers. "Good, 'cause I don't know what I'd do if you weren't."
When those pesky butterflies come raging back with a vengeance, she realizes she's fighting a battle she hopes to lose.
-
The sound of a conversation in the kitchen, low voices drifting through the closed door of the guest room wakes Sailor early the next morning. Sunlight filters in through the windows and she squeezes one eye shut against the painful brightness, the other still squished into JJ's shoulder. His arm is a welcome weight slung over her hip and his deep, even breaths are soft against her forehead as he sleeps on, dead to the voices down the hall. With the corner of her mouth turned up in a small smile, she smooths his fine blond hair away from his face and runs her fingers along his jawline before carefully sliding out from under his arm and quietly heading toward the kitchen.
Pulling her hair into a messy ponytail, she rounds the corner and stops short when she catches sight of the person standing by the table, her cheerful 'good morning' getting stuck on her tongue; she was expecting Pope and Kiara, not the goddamn sheriff! Shooting John B a wide-eyed look that makes him shake his head (what the fuck did that even mean?!), the redhead forces a smile and hastily offers her a wave.
"Uh, good morning, Sheriff. Sorry to interrupt, just, uh, grabbing some water."
She just nods in acknowledgement before turning her attention back to the brunet boy and Sailor breathes an inaudible sigh of relief. Holy shit, is that woman scary. She heads to the sink and keeps one ear on the conversation as she quickly fills a glass with water and pops two aspirin, the headache from last night made even worse by the addition of a whiskey hangover.
"I didn't realize you had company, John B. Wild night?" The sheriff asks and Sailor meets her friend's eyes again, her anxiety rising when she sees his thinly veiled panic. Her back to Peterkin, she silently implores him to say something, anything -hell, she even tries to subtly mime surfing with her hands to help him out- but he stays silent, so she gathers her courage, plasters a smile on her face, and twirls to face her.
"Busy day, actually. We went surfing all day after cleaning up the yard." She says, jerking her thumb toward the heap of broken branches piled by the fire pit visible through the living room window; when the sheriff turns to look, she quickly elbows John B in the side, ignoring his huff of surprise as she nods her head in her direction.
"Yeah, surfing! All day." He blurts out, sending Sailor a lukewarm glare when she quickly mouths 'what the fuck was that?' before they both straighten up and spin back to the older woman just as she turns to face them again.
"Right." Peterkin hums and arches one eyebrow as she glances back and forth between the two teenagers. "Now tell me, how'd you both get those bruises? They look pretty painful."
"Oh, this?" Sailor asks, pointing at her cheek with a casual shrug, "I tried to hang ten and bit it pretty hard. My board caught me right in the face."
Peterkin looks at her for a beat longer than normal and the redhead does her best to keep her expression neutral as her palms start to sweat. "Surfing, really? Thought you were pretty experienced in that department."
John B adds, offering some much needed back up, "Even the pros wipe out every once in awhile, you know?" He crosses his arms and leans back against the counter. "My board got me good, too."
"Yeah, it just was not our day," She says with a nervous chuckle, refilling her water and slowly starting to back out of the kitchen, pretending she doesn't see the dismayed look her friend sends her way; her anxiety can't take another second of the sheriff's piercing gaze and she needs to get away fast, lest she start recounting every single second of their activities both legal and not so legal- from yesterday in explicit detail. "And I'm still pretty tired so I'm just gonna go back to bed for a bit. Nice talking to you, Sheriff."
After disappearing around the corner before either of them can reply, she creeps down the hallway, keeping her footfalls as light as she can, and she's so focused on trying to listen in on what Peterkin's saying that she runs smack into JJ, standing in the doorway of the spare room. His arm instantly darts out to wrap around her waist and pull her close, keeping her from falling right on her butt as he says, "There you are-"
"Shhh!" Sailor hisses quietly, covering his mouth with her hand, "The damn sheriff is here!"
He mumbles something into her palm but she she holds a finger to her lips, pushing him back into the room and softly closing the door behind them before pressing her ear against it and dropping her hand from his face. He mirrors her position with a question clear as day in his wide eyes, 'what the fuck?', arm still looped around her lower back.
"She's grilling him about yesterday," She says simply, then turns her attention back to the faint voices floating through the door. The duo listens in silence, trying and failing to discern what's being said until they hear the sound of the sheriff's boots on the front porch and her squad car tires crunching through the gravel as she drives away and they exchange a worried look. JJ had it right: what the fuck, indeed.
"Holy shit, guys," John B's voice suddenly says from the hallway. The door opens before they have time to back away and it sends them sprawling to the floor in a twisted pile of limbs; the brunet boy -who'd usually find something like that hilarious- barely reacts to their position and sends them both a tense frown, his next words dropping like a damn anchor in the marsh.
"We need to go check out that Grady-White again, and fast."
Sailor groans and lets her head fall back onto the floor with a thunk. "Here we go."

let me know what you think! fun fact: ostriches actually do put their heads in the sand, but it's not because they sense danger. female ostriches bury their eggs to keep them safe from predators and they'll occasionally stick their head into the sand to check on them and give 'em a lil turn 😊

Montgomery x Reader (Part 20/?)
MASTERLIST
Soooo…
Here is part 20, I was very excited about that one, I hope you like it as well even though it’s not 100% how I was imagining it in my head (I think it’s always that hard, when you have high expectations about something you’re doing, you’re never really satisfied).
Anyway, when I was putting myself in mood for writing this part I was listening to Dress by Taylor Swift because the lyrics fit soo much - here (I even stole one).
***
My mum was definitely was more excited than me about this whole prom thing. She woke me up at 9 and assured me that breakfast and dinner (that I absolutely have to eat before I leave) will not make me look bloated (not that I cared).
Montgomery didn’t answer my text last night. Not that I expected him to do so. Besides, what can you reply to No problem.
Jessica called me before I even had chance to finish my breakfast in peace.
“Hello?”, I answered.
“I’m just calling to make sure you didn’t change your mind and are still coming to a prom”, she said.
“Yea, I’m coming”, I sighed.
My mum gave me warning look. My dress was gorgeous, but was also very expensive and my mum agreed to pay only if I sweared I’ll go to the prom.
“Just Jess… Don’t have any expectations about tonight, okay? I don’t have. I’m in peace and I decided I’m going there to have fun with my friends”
“But…”
“Jess”, I said through my clenched teeth.
“Okay, I promise”, I could almost hear her rolling her eyes. “I will not say a word about Montgomery. I swear. Montgomery? I don’t know him”.
I laughed a little.
“Bye, see you later”.
The day passed faster than usually. I barely blinked and was standing in front of tallest mirror in the house where mum, dad and I could look at me at the same time. I was wearing short, loose golden dress with spaghetti straps. I curled my hair in loose waves and had goldish-brown smoky eye. I also started counting hours until I will be able to take off the heels.
“Oh, sweetie…”, my mum whispered. “You look amazing”.
“Mum, I swear, if you’re gonna cry”, I roll my eyes. “It’s not even homecoming, it’s just winter prom.”
“I know, I know…”, she sighed. “Ugh, you’ll have your own child, you’ll understand.”
“Y/N”, my dad spoke, “you look beautiful”, he said with a smile.
“Thank you”, I smiled.
We heard honking on our driveway.
“It’s Jeff, I have to go”, I put on my leather jacket and went down the stairs.
“Have fun!”, Mum and dad said standing at the front door when I was walking to Jeff’s car.
He was waiting inside with, his girlfriend Leah. I felt like a massive third wheel and assured him I can drive on my own or ask mum or dad, but he was so stubborn about it.
“Hi, guys”, I said as I sat on backseat.
“Hey, you look great”, Jeff said.
“Watch your language, Atkins, your girlfriend is listening”, I joked.
“That dress is bomb”, Leah said.
“Thank you”, I smiled at her. “I love your braid”.
We got to school, but I decided I won’t be third wheeling with them walking to the dance, so instead I went to my locker to put my jacket in there.
I took deep breath and walked in to the dance. I was looking around trying to find someone familiar until I finally spotted Jess, waving at me like a crazy person.
“Oh my God, you look amazing”, she hugged me.
“Thanks”, I smiled.
“I know I promised not to say a word but… Turn around. But don’t make it obvious.”
“Okay, so umm, where’s Justin?”, I said while looking around.
I spotted Monty. He was standing with jocks, staring at me. Suddenly he realised I was looking at him and looked in different direction.
“Listen, the first moment he saw you, I swear, his knees got weak”, Jess said. I didn’t answer anything, just smiled at her.
“Wow, Y/N, I wouldn’t recognize you”, Justin came up with drinks.
“Is there something extra in it?”, I asked taking cup from him.
“Duh”, he chuckled.
***Monty’s POV***
I came to this stupid prom way too early. I was standing on the side with guys, they were commenting appearance of every girl that walked in. But I didn’t care. The only person I cared about was Y/N. I swore to myself that if see her today and I get that gut feeling again I will talk to her. I will tell her fucking everything even if once again it’ll end up with her telling me that I destroy everything and it won’t change. Jeff and his girlfriend came. But Y/N wasn’t with them. It didn’t make sense, he was picking her up on his way here for sure, why didn’t she came in with them? Did she ditch prom? No, impossible, Jessica was giving her so much crap about it, she would come here or Jess would never leave her alone.
“Wow, look at her, man, she won”, I heard one of the boys.
I looked in the same direction they were looking and there she was. She was looking liks a goddess. She always looked great in general, but that dress was doing her huge favour. She had a bit of some sparkly shit on top of her cheeks that made her look angelic. Llittle part of me that was bastard who had no right to be jealous, wanted to get her out of here only so other boys wouldn’t look at her. Y/N quickly walked to Jess, they hugged. Jessica said something, Y/N mumbled something back while looking down and putting hair behind her ear, so more than probably Jess complimented her and she couldn’t take it, as always. Y/N looked around, mentioning something about Justin (what I read from movements of her lips because now I apparently turned into psycho) and then her eyes met me. Jesus, she looked so beautiful it almost hurt. I should’ve walked up to her, take her away from Jessica and tell her whole fucking truth. Instead, she smiled a little at me and I quickly looked away with huge tangle in my stomach. Well played, Monty…
*** Y/N’s POV***
I drank whole drink at once, because apparently I was more nervous than I thought. I didn’t know I was nervous at all.
“I’m going for a refill”, I said.
“It’s in red bowl.”
“Just take it slow, Y/N”, Jess said.
“She’ll be fine”, I heard Justin talking to her as I was walking away.
I was pouring myself a drink when someone stood next to me.
“Hey, Y/N”.
I looked up.
“Oh, hey Scott”, Scott was one of the baseball jocks, we were familiar with each other but never really talked.
“Nice dress”, he said.
“Thanks”, I smiled nervously. Okay this was weird. We almost never talked to each other and suddenly he comes up to me, starts conversation and complements my dress.
“Umm… Would you like to dance?”
“Oh, well, no one is dancing, you know?”, I pointed at the back, where literally everyone was standing I small groups and just talking.
“Yeah, I don’t mean like now, but later?”
“Oh, okay, but why did you ask now and not later?”, I asked.
“I probably wasn’t suppose to tell, but I made a bet with Troy who will dance with you first, so… you know…”, as he was talking he started to realize it sounds bit silly.
“Okay”, I laughed a little.
Suddenly Monty walked up.
“Yo, Scotty, Bryce was looking for you. He and guys went behind the bleachers”, he said .
“Oh, cool, I’m going”, Scott nodded. “Y/N, we have a deal”, he pointed at me and walked away.
“You’re not going?”, I asked because Mintgomery still stood next to me but didn’t say a word.
“No, I don’t feel like smoking today.”
I nodded and looked around nervously.
“So, um, what’s the deal with Scott?”, he asked, looking around, trying to sound relaxed but I could see vein on his neck pulsing.
He was stressed. He was talking to me. About another guy. And was stressed about that. I bit my lips trying not to smile.
“He made a bet with Troy who will dance with me first”, I shrugged. “I don’t know why did they come up with that…”
“Yoo look beautiful”, he said suddenly.
“Thank you”, I smiled and I could feel I started blushed. “Well”, I cleared my throat, “you look good too. That suit? Nice one, de la Cruz.”
“Thanks”, he was looking down at his feet.
“Come oonnn! Y/N!!”, Jess came up, put my cup on the table and took my hand. “Come on, its our song, let’s daaanceeee”
I gave Monty apologising smile as she was pulling me away.
“What the hell, Jess?”
“We can’t give you to him on a golden plate”, she said.
“We? And besides what are you talking about?”, I shook my head. “He came up to me, he started talking to me, because he wanted to do so, what more do you want?”
“He walked up to you to make Scott go away”, she rolled her eyes. “He needs to try harder. Now, dance, he’s watching”
I sighed.
“Whatever”, I mumbled.
Me, Jess and Sheri dance a few songs, then Scott came up.
“Hey, do you remember?”, he asked.
“Yeah, sure”, I nodded.
We danced two songs together, then I remembered I left my phone in my jacket.
“It was really nice, thank you for not trying to put hands on my ass”, I said.
He laughed.
“Can I ask you something?”
I nodded.
“When I told you I made a bet with Troy, you could easily told me and him to go to hell but you agreed?”
“Well… First of all, because I’m quite naive I believed that dance means dance and not trying to having your hands all over my body, which was correct. Second of all, I still decided to dance with you, even though you kind of broke the rules of bet, because you didn’t make any comments when that stupid list came out. Unlike Troy.”
“Cool, thanks”, he smiled and nodded.
I went to my locker. Hall was a little bit scary, because it was dark outside, half of the lights were off and I was alone there. At least that’s what I thought.
“Well, well, well, look who’s here”, I heard Bryce when I was opening my locker.
I rolled my eyes before I turned to him.
“Hey”, I tried to sound neutral.
“Damn, Y/N, you look so hot”, he said standing way too close to me.
“Can you take a step back? I don’t know what the hell did you smoke but it stinks.”
“We were trying some new stuff”, he said but didn’t move. “I like you, you know? Good looks, sharp tongue, that’s good mix”, he said moving even closer.
“I wish I could tell the same about you. Now seriously take a step back, Bryce”
“Oh come”, he put my hair behind my ear. “Don’t be so tense.”
Okay, Bryce was annoying 99% of the time, but this time he was making me feel seriously uncomfortable and I needed to came up with something that would make me leave him alone. Risk was high, because I knew Monty told everything about us to Justin and Zach, but I wasn’t sure if he was talking to Bryce.
“I would say one word about this to Montgomery and he would fucking kill you”, I said.
“You mean my best friend Montgomery?”, he chuckled. “
"Well, if he’s your best friend then you know I’m right”, I said giving him a daring look.
“Come on, we’re just messing around”, he laughed but took a step back.
“Well, find someone else to mess around”, I said as I shut my locker and quickly walked away.
I got my to the dance, Jeff walked up.
“Hey, you’re good?”, he asked concerned.
“Yeah, Bryce was just talking his shit. Nevermind.”
“Okay”, he nodded his head. “Do you know what haven’t happen yet today? We haven’t dance together”, he took my hand and pull me in the middle of the crowd.
“Come on, Atkins, where’s you girlfriend? Dance with her?”, I moaned.
“She’s in toilet. Stop talking. Dance”, he ordered.
And I did. Dancing with Jeff was pretty much like contest of weird dance moves and making silly faces and I loved it. We had the best time and we didn’t care if other people are watching. We hugged at the end and we heard voice saying, “May I?”
I turned and saw Montgomery.
“She’s yours”, Jeff smiled and walked away.
“Hi”, I said quietly. He smiled at me.
“And we sloooow dooown a little bit”, Tony, today also known as DJ, said and played slow song. As if it couldn’t get any more awkward.
Montgomery put his hands on my waist, I hold my breath for a second because of the feeling of his hands on my body. God, I missed it. I put my hands around his neck. We started dancing slowly.
“So…”, we both started talking at the same time.“
"You go first”, he said.
“Are you feeling better about yesterday?”, I asked. I needed to break the awkward silence and this was all that came up to my mind.
“Yeah, yeah, I am. You are right, it’s just one game”, he shrugged.
“Good”, I nodded.
“Listen… Remember on New year’s Eve when I told you you were the best friend I have ever had?”
“Yes”, I said.
I could swear my hands started sweating.
“Let’s go back to this. I liked having you around. I liked having a friend in you…”
No. I didn’t wanted to go down that road again. I didn’t want to have a friend in him. I mean, I wanted. But I wanted something more.
“I don’t want you like a best friend”, I interrupted him. “I was so stupid and I should do it long time ago… Instead of ending this thing between us and making this whole mess.”
He was looking at me confused.
“I don’t want you like a best friend. I want more…”, I was looking him deep in the eyes. “And I wanted more for so long, but I was coward and pushed you away over and over again”, I was talking when suddenly he put one of his hands in my hair, the other one that was still in my waist pulled me closer and he kissed me.
At first in shock, but I felt like some tension, I wasn’t even aware of, left my body, maybe I even sighed with relief. If we were in a movie that moment, camera would spin around the two of us.
This kiss was different than any kisses before when we were making out. It was soft, delicate and gentle almost as if Monty was careful.
“God, you’re silly”, he whispered after kiss and rested his forehead on mine.
“Huh?”, I mumbled with my eyes still closed.
“How could you not notice that I’m all about you? I’m crazy about you. I’m not great in those big words but… I feel vulnerable when I’m with you. You’re my safe place, Y/N”, he said looking me deep in the eyes.
“I… I…”, I stuttered. But I couldn’t find right words. Instead I tightened my hands hugging him and hid my face in crook of his neck.
“Do you want to get out from here?”, he said into my ear. I nodded.
Monty took my hand and led me through crowd towards the exit. Just before we left I spotted Jess and Sheri smiling at us. We took my jacket from locker, left the school and walked straight, holding hands for the whole time. We were walking in silence, but this silence was different. It felt good.

I want to talk about Kanye West for a minute.
When I was a pre teen and a teenager, I obsessively watched MTV, VH1 and BET. I grew up listening to my much older siblings play Tupac and Biggie in the car. I loved hip hop from the get go. I watched Rap City every afternoon after school. I looked forward to Freestyle Fridays on 106&Park and was always so amazed by rhyme schemes, language, cadence and the sheer musical intellect involved to mesh that all together. I knew every single word to “99 Problems” (my favorite hip hop song of all time to this day) when I was far too young to be rapping along. I remember watching that video and yelling, “you crazy for this one, Rick!” from my parents’ couch.
With that being said, I don’t think I ever loved anything as much as I did when Kanye first appeared in the mainstream scene. “Slow Jamz” and “Through the Wire” came out around the same time. I remember watching those videos and being obsessed. “Through the Wire” was such a kickass video to me. I was 13 or 14 at the time and I loved the fact that this dude paid out of pocket to make the video. I loved that he recorded it with his mouth wired shut. I loved the scene where the music stopped and it showed footage of the Jay Z concert where Jay told him he had a deal. Kanye had a story back then. I loved it. I was inspired by it. I LOVED his production....the sped up soul beats, the corny (but witty) bars....I just absolutely loved this guy. I saved my lunch money and bought the clean version of The College Dropout (so my mom wouldn’t find the CD and throw it out). This was back in the days of the Walkman. In other words, you could catch me any given day on the school bus playing The College Dropout on repeat. You can still catch me streaming that album because it’s a fucking classic. He quickly, and without competition, became my favorite rapper.
That continued for years. Every single album, man. All classics. Even the ones I didn’t love at first, like 808s and Yeezus. They all had so much to offer. Kanye is a musical genius and I basically worshipped him in a musical sense. I loved his relationship with Jay Z (Watch the Throne is a top 10 hip hop album. Fight me). I loved that Kanye said whatever the hell he felt like. Back in the day, it wasn’t so abrasive....in the way it is now, at least. He made sense sometimes. A lot of the time, in my opinion. I was a child when he got on TV and said, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” Dude, what a moment. Balls of steel. I looked up to him so much for being authentic; all the while, he continued to produce DOPE ASS MUSIC. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is my favorite album of all time by anyone. Once that album (and the short film to go along with it) was created, it was cemented that he could do no wrong in my eyes.
Well, the cement started to crumble a few years ago. This comes after I saw him twice in concert (both nights being 2 of the best nights of my life, hands down). The interviews started to get a little weird (HOW SWAY?!). He started to ramble. Some of it was tolerable. At least he still seemed like he had it together at times. I thought to myself, “he’s just passionate. I’m the same way.”
But Ye, we are not the same way, man. You let me down. Besides making trash music with mumble rappers with lines like, “I’m a sick fuck, I like a quick fuck”, I absolutely cannot believe what he has become. It’s not even that he’s a Trump supporter. It’s what he’s using his platform to say. I can’t watch my childhood hero sit in the Oval Office and suggest black people are Democrats because they want welfare. I can’t watch this guy pretend to be a pioneer of education but not know what STEM stands for. I can’t listen to him, with the White House press snapping photos every half a second, spew ignorant comments about black on black crime, when he has every opportunity in the world to talk about the root of that issue, rather than the result.
Listen, I admire that he wants to give back to the community of Chicago. I admire that he is venturing outside of music to do other things. I also don’t care about his arrogance (I never have) in reference to most things. But I do care about fucking ignorance.
I’ve stood by this dude for basically 15 years now. I defended him through the Taylor Swift drama (both times), the Jimmy Kimmel shit, the issues with the paparazzi, the Kardashian nonsense, the Grammys....everything. But not anymore. The truth is Ye is going through a manic episode right now and reaching a level of braggadocio that far exceeds anything he’s ever touched before. You lost me at “slavery is a choice”, bro.
Someone print my Kanye opinion piece in your magazine.

My Top 127 Songs Of 2018
Previously: 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011
Tumblr media
Not the most ever... just the second most ever. The record of 132 stands. I hope it is never broken.
As always, criteria and info:
This is a list of what I personally like, not ones I’m saying are the “best” from the year; more subjective than objective
No artist is featured more than once
If it comes down to choosing between two songs, I try to give more weight to a single or featured track
Each song on the list is linked in the title if you wanna check any or every out for yourself; there is also a Spotify playlist at the bottom that includes 122 of the 127 songs
Well?
youtube
/grins
127) B.o.B - “Food Fight”
Some triplet rap, pretty boring, and I have no idea what this song is supposed to be. But the “Food of the WiFi” part makes me laugh, and I always picture my buddy Matto singing it to his eye rolling wife (even though I’m pretty sure he’s never heard the song before).
126) French Montana f/ Drake - “No Stylist”
This song sucks -- even Drake can’t save it. French Montana is cancer except you don’t get to die.
125) 21 Savage - “Monster”
Not a huge Savage guy, but the Gambino verse helps.
124) The Kooks - “All The Time”
Kind of a lazy chorus, but it’s aight.
123) Sean Paul f/ Jhené Aiko - “Naked Truth”
Love Aiko, have never cared for Paul... but the collab weirdly works.
122) REASON - “Summer Up”
My buddy Josh sent this one, and it’s got the warm vibes. Money stretch:
P asked me is REASON still workin', shit N***a, is Amber Rose still twerkin', gold diggers still flirtin' horny teens still jerkin', all my exes still lurkin' black lives still hurtin', black lives still hurtin'?
121) Nipsey Hussle f/ YG - “Last Time That I Checc’d”
B’s vs. C’s. And a beat that sounds like DJ Mustard combined with ‘90s G-funk. Also, YG’s bandanna scarf is just very cute.
120) Thrice - “Only Us”
Weirdly, another reds and blues music video. But this time, it’s kids at a summer camp. This could absolutely be used by networks as a pump up song for sporting events.
119) Anderson .Paak f/ Kendrick Lamar - “TINTS”
Anderson .Paak -- ohhhh, that dot will always annoy me -- really does not make bad songs. Kung Fu Kenny fits right in, and it’s a very easy hit-the-spot driving song.
Tumblr media
118) Mr Hudson f/ Vic Mensa - “Coldplay”
A serious song that uses an emotional reliance on Coldplay to take objective shots at Coldplay, which is pretty hilarious. Vic’s verse is good (”I lost my Queen poppin’ Ace of Spades at King of Diamonds ... I hate Coldplay”).
117) Logic f/ Wu-Tang Clan - “Wu Tang Forever”
Long cypher song. If you care about hip-hop, you probably know Drake also released a song called “Wu-Tang Forever” five years ago (which featured no members of Wu-Tang). There was talk of a remix -- RZA even recently said he wished they did -- but Inspectah Deck articulated why it didn’t happen back then:
“When I finally got to hear the song, I was more or less like, ‘Wow, I thought it was a tribute song like, it would be in respect of all eight members,'” Deck said. “And when I heard it, it was about a girl.”
You can just sense the colossal and spiritual disappointment.
Well, this one is more about fire than females; you’ll shout “Wu-Tang” proudly at least once. My MVP verse is Ghostface.
116) Jhené Aiko f/ Rae Sremmurd - “Sativa”
Rae Sremmurd* still sound like little kids to me. Conversely, Jhené Aiko is all that is woman.
(* - never knew they were brothers until just now)
115) Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs - “First Time”
Sam Coffey first got on my radar with The Clash-sounding song “Talk 2 Her”. This is less of that and more, like, ‘80s hair metal. It’s almost hard to tell if this is sincere or parody. The video absolutely does not take itself seriously.
114) Saves The Day - “Kerouac & Cassady”
Always been impressed with the very unthreatening Chris Conley’s ability to create such sinister, dark, and menacing imagery. This maybe has the most bleak closing line of any of these songs.
113) 5 Seconds Of Summer - “Youngblood”
This is what Fall Out Boy tries to sound like with their new stuff... but they just suck so bad now.
112) She Killed In Ecstasy - “Dissension (Gold)”
I remembered this being a dope instrumental before totally forgetting about the just-as-awesome vocals; great band name, too. Recommended by my friends Jim and Bill over brunch after taking in their show at Subterranean in Chicago the previous night. This could be the closing theme for a critically acclaimed TV show.
111) Night Birds - “My Dad Is The BTK”
Straightforward, bratty punk rock that promotes snitching (if you’re sure it’s for the right reasons).
110) The Decemberists - “Once In My Life”
Why does such an outwardly melancholy song still feel so damn uplifting? Probably the video. They have a long statement attached on YouTube, so for sure peep if this catches your interest.
109) Mad Caddies - “She’s Gone”
Here we have a straight up reggae cover of NOFX. Sometimes I don’t think I like this song at all, but it might just be hard to separate it from the original; almost wish it was possible to go in with a clean slate. Maybe you can on my behalf?
108) Rivers Cuomo - “Two Broken Hearts”
Would you rather not know the video uses Bitmojis or the pre-chorus promotes two different ice cream brands before the song ends?
107) XXXTENTACION - “Train food”
This song is intense; gave me memories of listening to Kendrick’s “The Art of Peer Pressure”. X not surviving 2018 makes it that much more haunting.
106) Kanye West & Lil Pump f/ Adele Givens - “I Love It”
Not sure why, in his most embattled year yet, Kanye decided to be a part of such a derogatory song towards women. Listening to it makes me feel bad. And sure, the MAGA imagery will be what we think of when we think of 2018 Yeezy, but this picture shouldn’t be too far off either.
Tumblr media
Shark: jumped.
105) New Lenox - “Do You Think We Made The Most Of Those New Years Eves”
That is a very long song title. But not as long as the time since passed on this reflection of the final night of the year, over a decade now gone. But even though he’s looking back, you know Chris Trott gets to hit reset at the end of the night, whether it’s December 31st or January 1st. And when NYE hits again, whether you return to the same party in the same place or a different experience in a totally different hemisphere, celebrating something is what makes this all matter.
(Full disclosure: yours truly has a minor backup vocal part in the outro)
104) Jeff Tweedy - “Having Been Is No Way To Be”
This for sure made it on the list because of the “And if I was dead, what difference would it ever make to them?” line, but upon closer scrutiny, the “And I’m sorry when you wake up to me” line is even more crushing.
103) Panic! At The Disco - “Dying In LA”
Brendon Urie’s voice is so polished and full. This song is him in complete control, and he knows it too (the “Dyin’ in LA” falsetto part at the end of the chorus is... probably not necessary).
102) Sugarland f/ Taylor Swift - “Babe”
Though Taylor’s impact in the music video is significantly stronger than her impact in the actual song, it’s still rock solid country. Or... country solid country?
/curtsies
101) ZHU & Tame Impala - “My Life”
This song has such a dancy cool on the power of its instrumentation; really doesn’t need vocals at all.
100) Kidd Russell & Southside Jake - “Slow Motion”
The poppiest SSJ has ever sounded. This is his best song to date. I’m not so sure if “Shots kill the butterflies” is an actual expression, but it should be.
99) Hop Along - “What The Writer Meant”
Hot damn, what a voice. This song is beauty in our not-often-beautiful world.
98) Retirement Party - “That’s How People Die”
This reminds me of a female fronted version of the departed Modern Baseball. Eager to see how they develop and definitely plan on checking their Audiotree session soon.
97) Lil Peep - “Sex With My Ex”
It’s... really good, you guys. The grimy nihilism of the “Fuck me like we’re lying on our deathbed” is palpable. It’s impossible not to think of the heights Peep would have almost definitely hit had he not passed. Also, super interesting tidbit on how the album got posthumously made:
Lil Peep died of an accidental drug overdose last November [2017] at 21. Afterward, attention turned to his computer. First, it went to London, where the files were backed up by First Access Entertainment, the company that helped guide his career.
Then it went to his mother, Liza Womack. In an interview in her cozy Long Island home, sitting on a nondescript couch that belonged to Peep and was shipped cross-country after his death, she calmly recalled walking into an Apple store, handing the laptop to a clerk, and saying: “My son died. This is him. Take this and put it on a new one.”
96) Kurt Vile - “Bassackwards”
I was on the beach, but I was thinkin’ about the bay
This has Kurt Vile’s signature laid back-ness (good) but also has a 9:46 track length (VERY VERY BAD). I’m not saying it has to be even four minutes long... but, like, could you have given us seven, KV? All of that aside, it really doesn’t slog at all despite mostly staying the same the whole time. Though I still can’t stop thinking about how much shorter it should be.
95) Christine And The Queens - “Doesn’t matter”
Kinda ‘80s pop sounding. Also, there’s a foreign accent there. British maybe?
/googles
French! Even better.
94) Brendan Kelly And The Wandering Birds - “Shitty Margarita”
Wish the drums were louder, BK.
93) Courtney Barnett - “Nameless, Faceless”
Barnett does not fuck around with her chorus/old adage:
I wanna walk through the park in the dark Men are scared that women will laugh at them I wanna walk through the park in the dark Women are scared that men will kill them
This type of perspective, down to the description of how she has to hold her keys in a way your average dude might not think about, remains so crucial as we all hope to continue to better understand each other.
Tumblr media
92) Jeff Rosenstock - “Powerlessness”
Meet me at the Polish bar I'll be the one looking at my phone Shaking like a nervous kid Absolutely terrified of being alone
...it doesn’t sound how it reads. All of his skittish energy fuels this fist pumping jam. And don’t miss the guitar solo.
91) Charli XCX - “5 In The Morning”
Pretty standard fare pop song, but Charli makes it cooler and better than if the average person jumped on.
90) Pinegrove - “Darkness”
Gonna be honest: it was nearly impossible to listen to Pinegrove in 2018 without thinking of the sexual coercion accusations from the previous year. Jenn Pelly’s long ass piece really did nothing to help matters. So because of all this, I listened to their new album “Skylight” wayyyyy less than originally anticipated. The few times -- really maybe ‘time’ in all actuality -- I was able to separate the story from the songs, it definitely became enjoyable. This has head clearing guitar leads and a lyric straight outta Sublime’s “Garden Grove”.
89) Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson - “Bad Dreams”
Brooding, nighttime, driving; good ingredients for a successful duet.
88) Meek Mill f/ Rick Ross & JAY Z - “What’s Free”
Now, if I’m Rick Ross, I spend my entire career avoiding any situation where people can compare me to Biggie. But since Rick Ross is Rick Ross, he went with the opposite plan. This is his (to my knowledge) second reimagined Biggie song*, and... it’s... it’s rough. I mean, how far can you take it with the line “Mona Lisa, to me, ain't nothin' but a b***h” and end with a gay slur. Pass.
But we also have the GOAT. In classic Jay fashion, he spits a lot of good words, you know it’s complex, and there’s no way to process it without more listens. And yes, the immediate brand checks are super annoying, but he pushes through and delivers some bars:
They gave us pork and pig intestines Shit you discarded that we ingested, we made the project a wave You came back, reinvested and gentrified it Took n****s' sense of pride, now how that's free?
When he finishes, the song itself ends, and we have one of the more long and uneven Jay cameos ever put on wax. It’s, like, a 5-star B-.
(* -  the first being 2014′s “Nobody”, a take off “You’re Nobody [Til Somebody Kills You]”, featuring French Montana, which spawned an all-time Rap Radar comment, “If someone killed French, he’d still be a nobody”; I will bring it up with the most minor of segues for the rest of my life)
87) Red City Radio - “In The Shadows”
I tend to prefer Red City Radio playing more uptempo, but they drag us down to a slower speed for this one. This centers around the cryptic “I show no fear when I know that the devil’s here” line, and the guitar solo is definitely overqualified for the genre.
86) Kanye West - “Yikes”
/cracks knuckles
The song: banging chorus, solid beat, lyrics meh. Of course it was the song he got Drake for, because it’s the only one on his solo release that vaguely resembled a hit.
The album: Calling “ye” bad is a little unfair, but the best and realest description is sadder: it’s Kanye’s most inessential record. It was forgettable at best and cringeworthy/offensive at worst. The one about his daughter was particularly appalling:
Don't do no yoga, don't do pilates Just play piano and stick to karate I pray your body's draped more like mine And not like your mommy's
This doesn’t even get into the entirely warped mental health takes that I’m not nearly qualified enough to address.
Kanye himself: Every Kanye fan has defended Kanye, some Kanye fans have abandoned Kanye, but 2018 was legitimately the tipping point where it felt like we all finally had enough, in unification. Shock, betrayal, and disappointment are probably the best adjectives. When you are willing to forgive someone for 90% of their behavior, and they up their bullshit to 110%, an understandable separation must occur. At this point, the man we once called Yeezus is now the hip-hop Louis C.K.: no type of constructive or negative feedback can penetrate his brain, and any new attempts at creative output only make everything worse.
85) Royce da 5′9′’ f/ Eminem & King Green - “Caterpillar”
As lyrical as it gets on this list, but what else do you expect from Em and Royce? Not a huge fan of the chorus (at least that loud part in the first half). Eminem legit goes off for, like, ten lines with a pooping metaphor to close the song.
84) Nicki Minaj - “Barbie Dreams”
Staying in the redone Biggie songs lane, we have Nicki with a passive evisceration of your favorite male rapper. You can call it crass, but I’d argue her playfulness makes the whole thing work, combined with the fact that it’s flipping the male gaze on its head. And though she’s having fun, some of these movie punches catch real faces. My favorites:
3) “Drake worth a hundred mill, he always buyin' me shit / But I don't know if the pussy wet or if he cryin' and shit”
2) “I remember when I used to have a crush on Special Ed / Shoutout Desiigner 'cause he made it out of special ed”
1) “Had to cancel DJ Khaled, boy, we ain't speakin' / Ain't no fat n**** tellin' me what he ain't eatin'”
Goodbye forever, DJ Khaled.
Tumblr media
83) Bad Bunny f/ Drake - “MIA”
I do social media for my high school alma mater’s football team, and this song first got on my radar when of the players tweeted something like “I can’t understand a word, but this is really good”. I was piqued, and it delivered. Nobody cultural appropriates quite like Drizzy Drake. Also, am I the only one who would have maybe been happier if the song was called “Bad Bunny” and the featured artist was M.I.A.?
82) Phoebe Bridgers - “Christmas Song”
Christmas songs are hard to write because they’re either taken or terrible, but Bridgers definitely carved out her own lane. This could work as a single person under a spotlight or sung by a group of lonely strangers finding camaraderie at a bar; within the song, you actually get both scenarios.
81) Remo Drive - “Blue Ribbon”
Got into this band for the first time in 2018, and though some of their older songs got more spins, this was my favorite from the new album.
80) The Sidekicks - “Twin’s Twist”
Mostly just impressed they were able to seamlessly integrate the “Chronic 2001″ into lyrics of a lighter rock song.
79) Real Friends - “From The Outside”
My favorite chorus they’ve ever written. While remaining thoroughly pop punk, the catchiness puts it more on the pop side of that spectrum.
78) Mike Posner - “Song About You”
Posner sounds like he’s barely trying, and it’s still so, so good. Favorite moment is this non-rhyme: “Since you’ve been gone, I got nothing to do / I sleep until noon, I wake up and feel bad”. It’s like a pop freestyle or something.
Also, extra shout out for how well he took his social media roasting after the Thanksgiving performance in Detroit. Love this dude.
77) Bad Religion - “The Kids Are Alt-Right”
What if I told you Bad Religion made a song with an intro that sounded like Andrew W.K.’s “Party Till You Puke” but were somehow still able to stay afloat? Hell, I’m confused too. The satirical lyrics mark 2018 for what it was. The pre-chorus, I remain torn on.
76) Blood Orange - “Saint”
You said it before
Looped keyboard beat over some smooth lyrics and melodies.
75) Juice WRLD - “Lucid Dreams”
I cannot change you so I must replace you
Still unclear how this *isn’t* a Post Malone song.
74) Tancred - “Queen Of New York”
Own the city.
73) We Were Sharks - “Drop The Act”
Ohhhhh, I love this production.
72) Cloud Nothings - “Leave Him Now”
This band continues to possess all of the melodic fury (and the Russell Westbrook of drummers).
71) Childish Gambino - “Summertime Magic”
Wasn’t big on “This Is America”*, so Glover releasing an ode to the best season as an alternative selection helped.
(* - at least not the song; vid was interesting)
70) The 1975 - “Love It If We Made It”
The 1975 are one of those bands where liking them makes you feel like an alien because everyone else either loves or dogs them. I’m keepin’ this casual, aight?
Also, since all writers are contractually obligated, we must mention the “Fucking in a car, shooting heroin” line which opens the song.
69) Kississippi - “Cut Yr Teeth”
Saw this band play in a classroom at a high school (google “BLED FEST”) in Michigan in May of 2018. They were fun, diverse, and covered Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle”. This tune is a little more serious and locked in.
68) Muncie Girls - “Picture Of Health”
Every part of this song is well-written, but it all builds to a massive chorus.
67) Justin Timberlake f/ Chris Stapleton - “Say Something”
There was a time, in January 2018, when not a ton of music had dropped yet, and this song was everywhere. It was like the dead-of-winter equivalent to the Song of the Summer. This one definitely gets docked some points for what I’d call weak lyricism. You can tell both dudes were way into it though, which does help make up for it some.
Tumblr media
66) Interpol - “The Rover”
As speedy as I’ve ever heard Interpol; pretty unskippable.
65) Dashboard Confessional - “Catch You”
Imagine if this were the only Dashboard song you’d ever heard. You’d think they were, like, happy. Our protagonist has a trustworthy assurance that should put you at ease.
64) Gulfer - “Secret Stuff”
No singing on this list will alienate you faster than the first eight seconds of this one.
63) Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - “Talking Straight”
Though this feels like two band names in one, RBCF know exactly what they’re doing as it pertains to the actual songwriting. This would fit right in during the mid-2000s garage/indie rock boom; could listen to the chorus on a loop.
62) Rita Ora f/ Cardi B, Bebe Rexha & Charli XCX - “Girls”
This song has the unique distinction of being think pieced and outraged cycled before I even got a chance to hear a second of it. The case:
Now, it goes without saying that the best people to explain why this song feels damaging and hurtful to queer women are queer women themselves – girls who kiss girls whether they’ve been gulping back Malbec or not. “A song like this just fuels the male gaze while marginalizing the idea of women loving women,” wrote Hayley Kiyoko on Twitter. Kehlani said it has “many awkward slurs, quotes, and moments”. MUNA’s Katie Gavin noted that in ‘Girls’ she hears “the familiar chorus that women’s sexuality is something to be looked at instead of authentically felt”.
To her credit, Ora apologized the very same day that piece came out (PUN INTENDED). What’s weird is the idea of this song being problematic made me like it more. It gives the sexual flippancy of the chorus authenticity. I don’t know, man -- this stuff is complicated.
Not complicated? Cardi B’s awful green screen cameo featuring cheap looking special effects.
Tumblr media
/shakes head in disappointment
61) Eminem f/ Ed Sheeran - “River”
Though not apples to apples -- since he’s not spitting -- we shall remember this as the time Ed Sheeran > Eminem in a song.
Marshall remains our unquestioned king of the ‘relationship dysfunction’ genre.
60) Culture Abuse - “Calm E”
Everyone’s getting back together
The writers of the perfect and generational “Dream On” continue to stay in the mellow lane with their subsequent releases. When you can pull off both, why not?
59) Brian Fallon - “Silence”
Fallon covers -- /checks notes --  Marshmello f/ Khalid, but it really could be an original. Dude really knows how to pick ‘em. I remember hearing this randomly at Shinto (a sushi/hibachi place) in Naperville; don’t remember if it was this or the original. Such a moving chorus.
58) Okkervil River - “Don’t Move Back To LA”
Gotta appreciate the persistent sentiment -- even though it’d be the opposite of my advice. Also took about 99.9% of the year for me to stop calling this band “Overkill” River in my head.
57) Natalie Prass - “Short Court Style”
Uber catchy and with a real groove.
56) The Interrupters - “She’s Kerosene”
2018 Rancid, down to the raspy-ish singing from Aimee Allen.
55) boygenius - “Me & My Dog”
When I heard Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and someone named Lucy Dacus were forming a super group, I was stoked. This tune was the one that jived the most with my vision of the project. Amazingly sick harmonies, dropping elbows on your heart like a professional wrestler, and introspection on introspection.
I wanna be emaciated I wanna hear one song without thinking of you I wish I was on a spaceship Just me and my dog and an impossible view
So, so, so, so good.
54) Shack Wes - “Mo Bamba”
How do you explain “Mo Bamba” to someone who doesn’t like rap? How do you explain “Mo Bamba” to someone who does like rap? I don’t know, but I am Teddy Bridgewater now.
53) Lil Dicky f/ Chris Brown, Ed Sheeran, DJ Khaled & Kendall Jenner - “Freaky Friday”
If you thought Rita Ora’s “Girls” was messy, allow me to introduce you to our last bad rap song on the list. Actually, maybe the Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse team would be a better candid--OHHHHH LADIES NO!!!!!!!!11111111
So yeah, whether it’s the most lightning rod word in American history, cultural appropriation, reverse cultural appropriation, or even just a good ol’ “I Blame Chris Brown” take, this attempt at comedy hip-hop got put under a microscope for all the right and wrong reasons. No one came out unscathed. But, like Ora’s song, if you can ignore some components (read: nearly everything), it’s so god damn fun, man. I mean, Dicky and Chris Brown swapped bodies -- pretty nuts. And it’s rare for an MVP line to be “How his dick staying perched up on his balls like that?”
52) Jay Rock f/ Kendrick Lamar, Future & James Blake - “King’s Dead”
I gotta go get it- I gotta go get it- I gotta go get it- I gotta go get it
The back half of the Future verse is the worst part about this song... yet the most fun to talk about. He raps auto-tuned, in falsetto... and these are the lyrics:
La di da di da, slob on me knob Pass me some syrup, fuck me in the car La di da di da, mothafuck the law Chitty chitty bang, murder everything
What a disgrace. Yet, almost like a whimsy 2 Chainz verse, it’s really fucking memorable.
51) Soccer Mommy - “Your Dog”
Noticeably good bassline? Check. Skin crawlingly bad band name? Check. Cool swearing? Yup.
50) Vince Staples - “FUN!”
Vince could rap his way out a bottomless pit; floating elevation flow.
49) Dan + Shay - “Tequila”
Tried so hard to get this one next to “Shitty Margarita”. Genuinely love this song. Maybe it’s the mountains in the music video, but that chorus just soars.
youtube
48) Meg Myers - “Numb”
Look up in the air and see this tidal wave chorus crashing through the world in slow motion.
47) The Penske File - “Fairgrounds”
My new working theory -- which really feels more like fact -- is how cool lyrics with the phrase “Meet me...” are. It creates this aura of unknown, mystery, and maybe even danger; like anything could happen if you just agree. Here are some from songs just off the top of my head:
Meet me by the lake
Meet me at the reservoir
Meet me in Montauk
Meet me in the middle (more on that one later)
Meet me in the back
Meet me at midnight
The list goes on. So please say “yes” to The Penske File at the fairgrounds, won’t you?
46) Lil Wayne f/ Swizz Beatz - “Uproar”
Weezy goes this entire song only using “oh” rhymes; not sure how he does it. Sometimes, I listen to this and pretend I’m a buffalo.
45) Cardi B - “Be Careful”
Cardi sampled Lauryn (wayyyyyyyy more on this later) and made it work. The chorus always sticks with me, and though the verses have a few bumps along the way, they might even be better.
44) Elway - “Crowded Conscience”
Elway pulls up their roots in this All Colorado Everything lyric video, and you’ll be ready to tap the Rockies when the singalong chorus finishes.
43) Pkew Pkew Pkew - “Passed Out”
A punk rock drinking song with a real bummer of a chorus for how happy the theme itself comes across.
42) Joyce Manor - “I Think I’m Still In Love With You”
I have no scientific proof, but Barry’s lyrics seem to be getting worse and worse. The drug references are still there, sure, but there’s an almost elementary simplicity to the proceedings. Still, like “Heart Tattoo”, this song doesn’t get in its own way and takes advantage of the basic words to create a big, big hook. You sing along even though it feels too easy at times.
41) Alkaline Trio - “Throw Me To The Lions”
So much desperation in the chorus; this could work as their last ever song.
40) The Bombpops - “Dear Beer”
My favorite opening line on this whole list -- the sweet and simple “I’m about to hit send / I’m waiting for the weekend”. Before you know it, a full blown self-loathing chorus. It’s got it all.
39) Foxing - “Lambert”
In quiet awe listening to this masterpiece of a song. Saw this band way up close in 2018 -- here is a picture:
Tumblr media
Hello, Foxing
38) Lucero - “To My Dearest Wife”
Civil War soldier or rigorous rock and roll touring schedule? Either way, the Lucero singer misses his wife and family, and he’s gonna let you know they’re on his mind. I saw them open for Frank Turner in 2018, and he played their new album front to back -- before it had been released -- as their entire set because “I promised to do this when drunk on Instagram”. Gotta respect a man with principles.
37) BlocBoy JB f/ Drake - “Look Alive”
Favorite Drake hook of the year. BlocBoy JB... less necessary. Also kinda crazy to think we didn’t know who producer Tay Keith was at the beginning of 2018; definitely made his impression felt by the end.
36) The Front Bottoms - “Tie Die Dragon”
As psychedelic as I’ll ever get. Unless it’s, like, The Beatles. But that’s different.
35) The Lawrence Arms - “Laugh Out Loud”
Released on their Best Of record (legitimately titled “We Are The Champions Of The World) and an “Oh! Calcutta!” b-side from 2006, TLA prove even their leftovers can be a main course.
34) Tinashe f/ Future - “Faded Love”
I know he’s a rapper and she’s a singer, but nothing is more illustrative of how much harder women have to work compared to men than the 1:36 mark when Tinashe sensually sings “Let’s just feel this feeling”, doubled with Feature’s auto-tuned ass doing the exact same thing, only 10x worse. Not enough to taint the song, even a little. His verse, however...
33) Chance The Rapper - “65th & Ingleside”
Chance -- who almost always makes the correct choices -- did this super annoying thing where he released a bunch of songs in single batches in 2018.
“But Bobby, he gave you tons of free music! Why are you complaining?!”
Because we couldn’t easily sequence it, bruh. Look at this shit!:
Tumblr media
Not even Drake would pull this stunt. EP next time, Chano.
Anyway.
Fun lines, really contagious beat, and a few types of flows; he spazzes at the end.
32) Complainer - “Drunk (Again)”
Gotta love when a song can’t start until multiple beer cans crack. These guys are a tiny band inspired-by-but-better-than Jeff Rosenstock, and I hope they get so much more traction.
31) ScHoolboy Q f/ Kendrick Lamar, Saudi & 2 Chainz - “X”
I LIVE ON TEN
Always read this title as the letter X even though the word “ten” is used 40 times in the song.
30) KIDS SEE GHOSTS (Kanye West & Kid Cudi) - “Reborn”
From Kanye’s only useful project in 2018 comes “Reborn”. Luckily, it’s mainly Cudi on this track (chorus/bridge/a verse). It feels like Ohio’s son is breaking through... or breaking out; verging on real triumph over his demons. Kanye, meanwhile, is surprisingly understated (read: good) and fits into all of his parts like a non-OJ glove. The sparing use of Yeezy reminds me of how the master himself used to feature people like Chief Keef just enough to harness the talent but not enough to ruin the song or do too much. Those alpha days appear to be way in the rearview now.
29) Travis Scott f/ Drake, Swae Lee & Big Hawk - “SICKO MODE”
Stacey Dash, most of these girls ain’t got a clue
This joins “Mo Bamba” in the Top 2 of Rap Songs That Need To Be Played At All Parties In The Year 2018. While “Bamba” is more consistent -- seriously, “SICKO MODE” is four songs in one -- almost nothing tops hearing the start of this and immediately anticipating the rest (like the opening of “Tuesday” when that was hot). The third part is probably my favorite. #likealight
28) SOB X RBE f/ Zacari & Kendrick Lamar - “Paramedic!”
Our third selection from the “Black Panther” soundtrack. Second favorite beat of 2018; I can’t not move the second it drops.
27) Drug Church - “Unlicensed Hall Monitor”
Favorite guitar leads of 2018. It’s as sleek as the vocals are gruff.
26) Matt And Kim - “FOREVER”
Was a dead tie between this and the equally emotional “Youngest I Will Be”. But this one has a vid -- and they make the best vids. This song also references the 1992 Dream Team. Our world will never be shit if they stay a part of it; first time I’ve came close to tearing up so far. These two inspire.
25) The Ramblin’ Boys Of Pleasure - “Joyce Jawbreaker”
Speaking of turrs, my band of 14 years released our maybe last song ever in 2018. Written in Maine, titled for Joyce Manor and Jawbreaker, and about lost love, Chicago, futures, playing music with your brothers, tiny hands, and found love. We also did a video:
youtube
24) Ariana Grande f/ Nicki Minaj - “the light is coming”
I really, truly am not excluding “thank u, next” to be contrarian. While I agree that is her defining song of 2018 -- and biggest hit to date? -- “the light is coming” is so much more unique. It goes in so many directions while the hook ties the rope around you a hundred times. Yep, I’m right.
23) Laura Jane Grace & The Devouring Mothers - “Apocalypse Now (& Later)”
Wish I could forever keep this song’s opening line as my mantra: You make me walk away from the hate I carry.
22) Restorations - “Nonbeliever”
Another band that should be bigger, so they can always be free to do anything they want. This song will always boil down to this part, which captures the push and pull of 2018 America:
I love your protest lines Oh, but who has the time? We all saw the same thing at the same time, okay? Got a partner for starters And a kid on the way Can’t be doing all this dumb shit no more
For how crass, clumsy, and non-rhyming that concludes, the song itself ends dire.
21) The Get Up Kids - “I’m Sorry”
One of my favorite videos of 2018. Similar to “Apocalypse Now (& Later)”, I’m not sure if it’s about a love interest or a kid. Does it matter? No. But it does to me.
20) Antarctigo Vespucci - “Freakin’ U Out”
A band name for the ages. With Chris Farren (of Fake Problems) on vox and Jeff Rosenstock on instruments, this song could power a car -- or at least one person who didn’t get a lot of sleep last night.
19) Bayside - “It Don’t Exist”
Anthony Raneri has a new grill, but this song feels 50 years old. A classic in real time.
18) The Carters - “APESHIT”
Is this artsy, all-time vid somewhat undermined by the Migos ad libs?
Yes.
/makes note to maybe dress up like this for Halloween next year
Tumblr media
17) Post Malone f/ 21 Savage - “rockstar”
This song is so good -- albeit misogynist and also bad -- it makes me genuinely eager for a 21 Savage verse. And though I love any bars relating to his 12-car garage...
my favorite 21 savage quirk is his yearly 12 car garage updates:
2016: “why you got a 12 car garage?”
2017: “they like ‘savage why you got a 12 car garage / and you only got 6 cars?’”
2018: “why you got a 12 car garage? / cause i bought 6 new cars”
(via @ottergawd)
...his intro line is just so, so terrible: “I've been in the Hills fuckin' superstars / Feelin' like a popstar”. You know that’s... not really a rhyme, right?
16) Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness - “Ohio”
/will always, always death stare that dumb name to start any Andy section
Ah, but if we did start with a lyric?
Katie’s counting crows
This song is about leaving the worst state for one of the best. But if we’re doing that, why do we feel so melancholy?
15) Kendrick Lamar & SZA - “All The Stars”
You've gotta be mesmerizing to make Kung Fu Kenny look pedestrian, but SZA's galactic hook does just that.
14) Frank Turner - “1933
Frank isn’t from here, but he’s setting out to remind us of where this all began.
13) The Wonder Years - “Sister Cities”
As far as pop punk legacies are concerned, The Wonder Years’ is secure. There is no longer necessity to churn out bangers; they’re already on the Mount Rushmore. Still, they go. Every part of this song is essential: the build up verses, blown out chorus, Panic! At The Disco 2005-era hi-hat off-time drum transitions, end-of-the-rope bridge. The true standout is the closing of V2:
I'm guarded like I'm wounded, my first instinct's always “run” I wanna turn to steam I wanna call it off I wanna lighten the dark I wanna swallow the sun
Good guitar leads add even extra.
12) YG f/ 2 Chainz, Big Sean & Nicki Minaj - “BIG BANK”
“Alexa, what does big bank do to little bank?”
The highlight line from each:
YG: “Ayy, I set the bar, I'm the fuckin' bar / Look in the sky, I'm a fuckin' star / I don't fall in love 'cause I be lovin' hard / Do everything like my shirt, extra large”
2 Chainz: “Big shit like a dinosaur did it”
Big Sean: “I'm rare as affordable health care”
Nicki: “Told em' I met Slim Shady, bagged a Em / Once he go black, he'll be back again”
Let this also be remembered as the song that created a Madden controversy.
11) Dean Summerwind - “Parked By The Lake”
What is there to say about the legend that is Dean Summerwind? With only one song on Spotify, he’s batting a clean 1.000. Calling this genius feels like an understatement. It’s real, it’s parody, it’s persistent, it’s ours.
10) The Dirty Nil - “Bathed In Light”
The Canadian Local H. Reaaaaaaaally wanna see them live in 2019.
9) oso oso - “gb/ol h/nf”
I stylized oso oso as “Oso Oso” last year to stick it to their frontman Jade, but a year later, I’ve lost the energy. Blame Ariana Grande. This song -- which stands for “goodbye old love, hello new friend”* -- has my favorite chorus of the year. It’s so simple, it’s obvious: “But I still come through, when you want / And if I serve no use, where do I get my purpose from?”
Also, this is indie/pop/punk/rock’s version of “SICKO MODE”: got more parts than “The Wire”.
(* - had to look that up multiple times in 2018 and never retained, despite it being the bridge of the song... I didn’t notice)
8) Kacey Musgraves - “Space Cowboy”
If any song *survives* the existence of this list, I hope it’s this one. Kacey has this predictable-yet-surprising way of taking existing tropes and co-opting them with her own twist. Homegirl is like the Jim Nantz of pop/country in that way.
Tumblr media
7) Direct Hit! - “Welcome To Heaven”
This song makes me want to die to, you know, check. Blustering chorus, fascinating premise, and charged up while simultaneously patient/in control.
6) FIDLAR f/ The 90s - “Are You High?”
This not being on Spotify was one of the worst non-Michigan football things to happen to me in 2018. Man, I hate Michigan football.
5) Drake - “Nice For What”
- My favorite beat of 2018 (New Orleans bounce, ftw)
- My favorite release of 2018 - Drizzy said it would drop on a Friday - We were thinking morning or midday (not late evening, in the last remaining hours of the day, when were were faded and had waited so long it was almost forgotten -- it hit perfect) - On top of that, he also sampled Lauryn Hill’s “Ex-Factor” -- the same week Cardi B did the same -- with even more pulsating results - I will always interpret that as a real or sneak diss, yet no one I know has ever said anything
- My buddy Josh sent a selfie vid of him and his girl and some friends bopping to it; I’ll remember that forever; the moment felt like such an event, as if the world simultaneously celebrated at such an atypical time
- Drake deserves 30% less credit for this female empowerment anthem because of the “these hoes” sample
- Maybe a Top 5 Drake song, all-time
- There is no planet, solar system, or multiverse where 2018 Drake finishes ahead of 2018 Pusha T
4) Pusha T - “The Story Of Adidon”
You are hiding a child.
Let’s not mince words: this is the No. 2 greatest diss track of all time. Pac is No. 1 -- this will not be debated. From there, Nas is DQ’d for “Ether” homophobia, annnnnnd no one else is in the realm. King Push...
- Unearthed a photo of Drake in blackface and uses it as the art for the song - Goes at Drake’s mom (”Marriage is something that Sandi never had...”) - Goes at Drake’s dad (”Dennis Graham stay off the 'gram, bitch, I'm on one”) - Outs Drake for having a child (and hiding said child!*) - Goes at Drake’s baby momma - And -- /gulp -- goes at Drake’s longtime producer 40 for having multiple sclerosis, suggesting he will not be alive soon**
He does this over “The Story Of O.J.” beat... a rather chill backdrop, all things considered.
(* - Drake responded later with the line “I wasn’t hiding my kid from the world, I was hiding the world from my kid” which just isn’t cool at all but is competent enough to win some people back over; /barf)
(** - HOLY FUCK***)
(*** - much debate occurred in the aftermath regarding if Push “went too far”; I was 50-50 at the time but now am 100-0 that it was the right choice; this song is cyanide venom, so why pull back even an ounce?)
Though Drake survived -- turns out the mainstream pop boost is bigger than hip-hop beef -- he took the fattest of L’s on this one.
Really can’t decide on a lyrical ending, so I’m gonna go with two:
Surgical summer.
If we all go to hell, it’ll be worth it.
3) Spanish Love Songs - “Buffalo Buffalo”
In my head, this was gonna end up ahead of The Menzingers, but that would be like putting Greta Van Fleet ahead of Zeppelin. Spanish Love Songs were my breakout band of 2018. They released my favorite album, I saw them as an opener at Sub-T in Chicago, and I promised their bassist I’d see them in Florida at the Fest (this did not materialize). While their vocals and guitar leads sound identical to Scranton’s finest, if you listen to them as much as I did, you’ll realize they offer a sound and perspective* of their own as well.
(* - no one hates themselves more than this singer)
2) The Menzingers - “Toy Soldier”
There’s so much to be sad about these days
/that guitar intro
Followed by the best musical moment of this year: from 0:06 to 0:07 -- the ever-so-slight delay before the band blows it out. Spent a lot of time in 2018 debating if I should change my Twitter bio to “I lost my accent in the plague”. Listened to this song on the floor of the living room on my 32nd birthday; then I read “The Great Gatsby”. From there (at this point, it was past midnight), I realized this sounded like The Lawrence Arms’ “Requiem Revisited”, which was inspired by Naked Raygun’s “Soldiers Requiem”. It’s all a triangle of that perfectly fitting punk chord progression. That’s right: I am Pepe Silvia.
