The more I watch it…

… I definitely think the reason the Nate and Eliot relationship gets overlooked is that it’s very tacit and unspoken. These are two guys who do not discuss feelings, at least not directly, instead they just steadily… Fall into a pattern, they develop a system. The trust and loyalty between them isn’t spelled out in long speeches or discussions; it’s in the way Eliot starts to look to Nate for a cue if he should engage; Eliot allowing Nate to pull him back; it’s Nate never trying to force details of Eliot’s past from him; the way Nate only ever doubts Eliot once and then never again; the way Nate looks at Eliot after being forced to take a drink in the Bottle Job, or any other time; their conversation about the bank robbery in the Bank Shot job; Eliot being willing to kill for Nate; no matter how far on a bent he is, it’s in Nate never asking him to; it’s in Eliot and Sophie worrying about Nate’s destructive behaviour and his drinking; Nate telling Eliot ‘get them to the chopper’ rather than ‘get to the chopper’; it’s every time Eliot speaks out about a play or choice he doesn’t agree w/ and calling Nate out; it’s them sitting in silence in the bar; it’s the way Eliot falls in at Nate’s shoulder, or shifts in front of him in case of threat; it’s Eliot doing things Nate asks even when he complains; it’s Nate honestly responding when Eliot confronts him; it’s the Zanzibar Job; Eliot being mad Nate (and the others) left the baseball game early; Nate trying to protect Eliot from being forced to do the fixed fight; his panic at thinking Eliot’s been shot for a moment; Nate sounding for all the world like a proud dad during the country music ep; the exchange at the end of the cheerleading ep; them both harping on Hardison to tip the messenger; Nate trying to curb Eliot’s flirting; watching sports together; it’s the tiny glances they exchange or they way they sometimes move in sync.

Leverage Inc has no hierarchy, not really, not in the usual sense, but they fill their own roles based on their strengths and personalities. There’s no outright decision, no official acknowledgement, but they don’t need that. Nate and Eliot settle seamlessly into not just the roles of a mastermind and his loyal, trusted, and competent lieutenant and enforcer, but also something reminiscent of a father and an eldest son. They are actually one of the closest bonds in the whole crew (which is comprised of very close bonds, to be fair, but hopefully you get the point), they just do it so naturally and almost in the periphery that it can go unnoticed/understood very easily.

Japanese Linguistic Observations in Spy x Family - part 3

Part 3 - Yor's keigo

I discussed in part 1 about the different levels of speech in Japanese, particularly how Twilight changes his speech depending on the persona he's donning. He uses keigo, the standard polite form of speech, when he's acting as Loid Forger, but uses casual speech as Twilight. Yor, however, uses keigo all the time, to a degree that some would feel is excessive, but also makes sense for her character.

Keigo is the most basic form of polite speech in Japanese. It's the speech that's taught in pretty much every beginner Japanese learning course because it's the "safest" for most situations. Without getting too technical, it basically involves using the polite conjugations of verbs. All verbs in Japanese have a "polite" conjugation form that's used in keigo. For example, the verb "to go," 行く (iku), will change to 行きます (ikimasu): change the く(ku) to き (ki) and add -ます (-masu). -masu itself is then conjugated further to show past tense, negative tense, etc. Likewise, one would use です (desu) as the "to be" verb instead of its casual equivalent だ (da). For example, saying 車です (kuruma desu), which means "there is a car" instead of 車だ (kuruma da). It's even more casual to leave out the "to be" verb altogether.

Unlike Twilight, who changes his speech depending on who he's talking to or which facade he's using, Yor consistently uses keigo, whether she's talking to an adult like Loid, a child like Anya, and even an animal like Bond. She uses keigo with strangers as well, even those who are antagonistic to her, like the other assassins in the cruise arc.

Even at times when using polite speech isn't warranted, like in her own thoughts, she still uses keigo regardless.

In addition to using keigo with pretty much everyone, she also uses the polite -さん (-san) honorific with everyone's names as well. It's not unusual to do this with fellow adults like Loid, Camilla, and Franky, but when it comes to kids, especially when they're not your own kids, other honorifics are also an option. For example, adults can use the honorifics -ちゃん (-chan) for little girls and -くん (-kun) for little boys, both of which denote endearment to someone young/cute. Loid calls Damian "Damian-kun" and Fiona calls Anya "Anya-chan" for example. But Yor uses "-san" for Anya, Damian, Becky, and probably every other kid she hasn't met yet! She uses "-san" with animals as well, which isn't nearly as common. She's the only one who calls Bond "Bond-san" and she even called the cat Kopi from chapter 43, "Kopi-san."

She also uses "-san" for people whose names she doesn't know, and in some cases, probably shouldn't show respect to. She calls the terrorists from the doggy crisis arc "terrorist-san", bad guys that she takes out on her missions "warumono-san," Olka's group "mafia-san," and the other assassins from the cruise arc "koroshiya-san."

The only exception to Yor's excessive use of keigo is Yuri, which makes sense since it's standard practice to be more casual with a younger relative than an older relative or someone outside the family. He's the only person she refers to without "-san" (she just calls him "Yuri"). And while she does use the informal verb forms with him, she still uses "desu" and its conjugations. So overall, she's more casual with him, but not completely so.

When talking about herself, Yor uses the standard, gender-neutral, polite word for "I"/"me," 私 (watashi). However, when talking to others, she never uses any form of "you." Like I mentioned in part 1 about how there's different ways of saying "I" and "me" in Japanese depending on the speech level, the same is true for "you." But it's always more polite to say someone's name or title instead of "you," and Yor does that all the time. Just like in part 2 how I couldn't recall any instance where Anya says "I" or "me" since she always refers to herself in third person, I can't recall any time Yor called someone "you" instead of saying their name or title.

While Loid uses the casual "you" word お前 (omae) when talking to Anya, Bond, Franky, and anyone else he doesn't have to be polite with, he doesn't use any form of "you" for Yor. He speaks to her the same way she does to him – saying her name plus "-san" instead of using "you."

Unlike English, Japanese is a language where you don't have to say pronouns if it's understood by the context, which is why something like this is difficult to convey in a translation.

I think it's an interesting contrast that Twilight is constantly changing how he speaks depending on whether he's acting as Loid Forger, as a spy, whether he's conversing with a fellow spy like Fiona, a casual friend like Franky, someone he respects but can't be fully open with like Yor, and even how he talks to himself in his head…yet Yor is the total opposite. As I've discussed in this post, she's extremely consistent in her speech, never straying from being polite no matter who she's speaking to or whether she's in her Thorn Princess role or not, or even whether she's speaking to herself in her head or not. This just further proves that, while Yor has to keep her assassin job a secret, she doesn't have to create a fake persona for it. Unlike Twilight, who acts one way as a spy and another way as Loid Forger, and perhaps another as his "true" self, Yor doesn't feel the need to hide anything about herself other than her job as an assassin – Thorn Princess and Yor Forger are the same person who shows respect for others no matter what her relationship is with them.

Such excessive use of keigo is odd for a fluent speaker, but it's not unheard of. There are plenty of examples of characters from other anime/manga who use keigo all the time too. I think it gives us an interesting, subtle look into their character. In Yor's case, I think her constant use of keigo comes from a combination of her sweet personality that never wants to offend anyone, but also her poor self-esteem. After all, keigo and other polite forms of Japanese speech are meant to elevate the listener while humbling the speaker. Yor speaks politely to everyone because she simply wants to be kind to everyone and make them feel comfortable, even those she has to kill, but at the same time, she often feels inferior to others.

However, there are rare exceptions where Yor stops using keigo which are, appropriately, during very suspenseful, high-stakes moments where politeness would be the least of her worries. For example, during her fight with Barnaby when she realizes she's holding back, she starts using casual speech. But she goes back to keigo before too long.

But probably the most notable example of her completely dropping keigo is near the end of her big battle against the assassins on the cruise ship, where she finally comes to realize what she's fighting for. During her whole epiphany scene – starting from when she thinks of Yuri and herself as kids until she stands up and says she won't stop fighting – she switches completely to casual speech.

There are many ways to interpret this, but I think it shows what an emotional revelation this was for her: she remembered that the suffering in the world is what caused her to want to protect Yuri from any kind of tragedy, and now the same can be said for Loid, Anya, and Bond. She remembered the words of acceptance she heard from Loid when they first met, words no one else had likely ever said to her before. She realized that she didn't care what happened to her as long as she could stop anything bad from happening to her loved ones – in that moment, no formalities were necessary with such intense self-reflection.

ORZ sleezy mafia Floyd has me in a chokehold!!! I can imagine darling fights tooth and nail at the prospect of dating but meeting the Leech parents causes her to falter — they love her so much! And Jade too ;) (in more ways than one but we’ll never know wink wink) so now darling just goes “what now? Do I lie?” I imagine the Leeches were actually told that they were practically engaged already, so it’s a matter of time before darling relents! The sex is phenomenal and has her coming back anyways!

If not then, with their connections and intelligence, they have other means of persuading ^.^

Darling and Floyd's relationship seesaws between "they're definitely lovers" to "oh, they're just fuck buddies." T_T it's so frustrating for Floyd because he wants to put in the time and commitment, but because you're familiar with his personality you expect him to eventually grow bored and toss you aside and so you only treat him as a temporary pleasure. But then Floyd is waking up early to cook you breakfast in bed when you spend the night at his place, he's giving you his shirts and sweaters because "they're comfy" and definitely not because it's this weird possessive habit he has where you have to smell like him or else, he knows all of your favorite and least favorite things, he can read you better than you read yourself at times, he genuinely wants to know you outside of the bedroom, and he cares so, so much. You're the first long-term and consecutive fling he's ever had, and if this was unfolding in the Coral Sea you'd be a mated pair by the end of your fourth month together. orz

So it's really awkward (for him) when you visit his parents because they assume the two of you are together but haven't yet mated. Floyd's smacking his father with his tail and thinking shutupshutupshutupshutupshutup in a loop when he slyly suggests you and Floyd ought to get busier. Mama Leech isn't any better (or subtle); she really wants grandchildren to love and spoil. Only his parents are capable of flustering the rarely-flustered Floyd. T_T and Jade is just as bad. He makes sure to join in on the lighthearted teasing, and Floyd hates him for it (not for long, though, because when he hears your laughter and sees your pretty smile... oh, he's falling in love all over again).

Going into the meeting, you probably told yourself you'd lie or divert just to make things easier. But the Leech family are so comfortable and safe and sweet! You feel so welcomed and loved and appreciated the minute you're brought into the large, rocky, labyrinthine structure at the bottom of the sea, having taken a transformation potion to exist at such deep, dark depths. If Floyd loved you before, he loves you even more now that you're (temporarily) a mer like him and it's so hard to ignore every mer instinct that tells him the two of you are together in a more intimate sense. He knows that's not how relationships work on the surface, but this isn't the surface and so you can't exactly blame him for feeling even more drawn to you than normal.

By the end of the meeting, you feel so dazed. Floyd rarely talks about his parents, so you didn't have many concrete expectations or assumptions beforehand. But now that you're acquainted with his parents, it makes your relationship feel far more real and official than it ever did. orz but you're still just fuck buddies!!!! You promise yourself that over and over, but it doesn't really stick this time...

honestly I think that the things Kim did were entirely within reason and understandable for his situation, even though he didn't handle it all in the best ways, and his actions hurt people and had consequences. like. I do think his morals are skewed (understandably) and he made mistakes. 

but I genuinely do not understand all the takes i see about him being morally reprehensible and deserving to suffer and grovel at the end of the day

he was raised in a mafia family to be a fighter, and he has watched his brothers suffer horrifically (khun with the kidnappings, kinn with tawan). We don’t even know anything about what he’s gone through personally! Who knows what other traumas he might have. So i think him investigating Porsche and Chay is a very reasonable response to the highly suspicious situation of Korn insisting on hiring Porsche despite his lack of experience etc etc, and to the additional suspicious situation of Chay showing up at the open house and having encyclopedic knowledge of his music.

Although his feelings for Chay before the falling out aren't extremely overt, they're very very much there and you can see them clearly in his expressions whenever he's with Chay or thinking about chay. yeah the "im hungry" was kinda shitty, but based on what canon implies, they weren't dating for long at all (there are polaroids and movie tickets that imply a few dates at most) and even if it weren't for the whole lying thing, for a kid who grew up the way he did, it probably would have been too early for him to say I love you anyway!

And then the breakup – he just witnessed Chay get kidnapped, witnessed tawan back from the dead and causing his brother even more pain and suffering, the bodyguard he was closest with died, and he could no longer just be wik & Kim to chay. The combination of all this, the reality of the suffering in this life, pushing Chay away (even if probably unnecessarily harshly) is a totally understandable response to the situation! And we've already seen that Kim is a person who tends to isolate himself.

When he realized that Chay wasn't able to leave this life (Namphueng being alive and part of the family, Porsche becoming minor family head), and when he realized that Chay was struggling & putting himself in dangerous situations, he tried to help, he tried to fit himself back into chay’s life to protect him and care for him. again, he didn't handle it perfectly. He kinda fucked that up. but. he's still a kid, and he's a kid who's had a very fucked up life and was definitely not able to learn healthy coping mechanisms and social skills (outside of the practiced charisma that is wik).

So yeah, he fucks up, and he gets angry when his (kinda wack) attempt

to reach out at the club goes south and Chay won't give him the time of day. 

But.

I think a lot of people overlook the facts that he is, 1. a kid (21/22! still in college!), 2. a kid with a lot of fucking trauma, 3. very isolated and lacking social connection and skills, and 4. Probably really fucking scared.

Like it's okay that he's not perfect and he fucks up! but almost all of his actions stem directly from fear, paranoia, and love (for his brothers, and later, for chay) and I think that is often looked past.

Landoscar (Lando/Oscar) Mafia AU

Lando is the head/ceo to the biggest most dangerous mob. They kill and are ruthless and feared. Lando's personality is cold, kind of insane, madman, but he's kind of a family man yk? They have their little family in the mob (can be any of the grid tbh) Lando's protective of. His caring sweet personality is reserved for them.

Oscar is Lando's (overworked) secretary/personal assistant, (quite possible the best in the world) who Lando has the biggest soft spot for, (aged up characters maybe cuz Oscar's been Lando's assistant for a good few years that they're close, practically know everything about eachother better than the other)

Uptill now it's just been longing glances between them, Lando's too afraid to risk it, Oscar's too important to him and if the enemy finds out... And Oscar believes Lando would never love him like that.

But then, Oscar gets kidnapped by the enemy, who has 2 reasons to do so. 1. Get on Lando's nerves, and 2. For more...personal reasons (he's obsessed with Oscar to the point it's creepy, he's been wanting Oscar to join him for years, Oscar's always declined).

He sends messages and videos to Lando, that he's finally got his hands on Oscar, Lando is PISSED. He unleashes his inner mad man and everything is in hold untill he can get his Oscar back to him, he's never liked the enemy for the creepy way the guy was with Oscar. He does everything and i mean everything to get Oscar back and possibly kill the enemy.

Oscar's a tough cookie, he doesn't waver to the guys attempts to get information out of him, or his creepiness. He's loyal to Lando and he knows Lando, trusts him to save him.

The guy becoming impatient, reduces to physical methords to make Oscar break and talk, and sends the videos of Oscar hurt, scared, and in pain, to Lando to get a rise out of him. Big mistake. Lando is livid. That guy is as good as dead.

Que Lando saving Oscar, with the entire team behind him, and mass murdering the enemy base. Realization of feelings and maybe some smut at the end.

DW: Jealous Lando, violence (idm gore as long as it's not tooo descriptive) angst, top Lando, fluff.

Eddie had taken Steve on a date where they went to the music store to buy some cassettes and listen to them in his van.

"You really wanna go to work on a date?", Steve had asked.

"It's not the store I work at, so it doesn't count", Eddie had grinned. Eddie had just got paid and his first priority was always new music.

They both grabbed something, which Eddie paid for, while Steve got them lunch. They ate in the front seat of his van while listening to each other's music.

"I think I told you about how my family's coming into town for the 4th of July?", Steve said, halfway through his sandwich.

"A whole haggle of Harrington's, huh? Is there enough hairspray in Hawkins?"

"We might need to go to the next town over. Anyway, my parents said it was okay to invite you. If you wanted to come. You know, if you wanted."

"Wait, is there where I'm introduced to the don and told to kill a cop if I want your hand in marriage?"

Steve rolled his eyes. "The mob jokes weren't funny with my parents and they're not funny with me."

"I think your parents are funny", Eddie smirked.

"You wouldn't think so if you knew they thought of setting me up with some mafia guy. Ritchie or something." Steve wrapped up the half of his sandwich that he didn't eat. "Anyway, do you wanna go? It's a big step for us but-"

Eddie put his own on the dashboard. "Can we go back to the fact that your parents wanted to set you up with a mobster? Should I be worried?"

"According to my folks, he's a numbskull, so no. And they like you, so I wouldn't worry about anything. But I get it if you don't wanna be thrown to aunts and cousins. I mean I haven't even told the rest of my family that I'm...you know."

Steve hadn't even really thought about coming out to his extended family. Coming out to his mom and dad had been such a spur of the moment thing.

"Steve, if they're anything like Diane and Jonas, they'll have arranged a 'Steve is Gay' parade for you", Eddie smiled.

Steve covered his face. "God, you're right. I'm pretty sure I saw my mom starting a wedding scrapbook."

"A what-?!", Eddie squeaked.

"A nothing!"

Eddie cleared his throat. "On second thought....This family event sounds like a tall order for me. I think you need to convince me a little, make it up to me baby. I'm about to put in some heavy work."

Steve's response was to look Eddie up and down slowly, they move into the back of his van. Before they had gotten together, it had been a sparse area with little knick-knacks from things Eddie had hauled in the past. But since officially getting with Steve, Eddie always made sure to have a thick blanket and a couple of pillows at the ready.

They were currently parked near the quarry. It was nice, considering they didn't have a lot of places that they could be out publicly.

"Eddie~", Steve sang once he got back there, prompting his boyfriend to practically pounce on him.

"And ho~w exactly do you plan on making it up to me, hm?", Eddie asked as before pecking Steve's lips.

Steve chuckled and petted Eddie's hair, then pulled it away from his ear to whisper in it. "I'm gonna make you cum in your pants."

Eddie collapsed on top of Steve with a moan that was only a little exaggerated. From the moment he saw him walk into the music store, he wanted to get his hands on him. And every day that was able to was like a dream.

Steve flipped them over and kissed his lips, pulling back with a bite. Steve never got tired of kissing him. Any time they were alone his lips were on Eddie within five minutes. That one time, the two of them really had been looking at magazines before starting to grind on each other in his bed. Well now it was time to finish the job.

After nibbling on Eddie's lips a little more, Steve sucked at his neck. He could feel it warm in his mouth and could help but bite into it. Eddie was a biter himself and it had infected Steve. He tugged his shirt down a bit and kissed at his collarbone. Steve dragged his hands down Eddie's chest and sat up, straddling his hips.

Eddie let out a grunt. He was already at half-mast thanks to Steve's promise.

"You really want me that badly?", Steve whispered.

Eddie nodded quickly. "Always do."

Steve started slow, dragging his lower half from the top of Eddie's hips all the way down to the bottom of his crotch. Eddie whimpered every time their groins lined up. His hips jumped but it was clear he was holding back. Steve smiled and kissed his lips. Eddie was good at that, restraining himself because he didn't want to scare Steve off. He let Steve set the pace. And seeing how much Eddie desired him but still waited for permission was such a turn on.

He groaned as he pressed his own hard on against Eddie's. Steve fisted the blanket underneath them and started to get lost in the feeling. Eddie finally grabbed his hips, then his hands trailed down to Steve's ass, a cheek in each hand.

"Eddie~ Ah, uhn~"

Steve's breaths were starting to pitch and Eddie knew what that meant, knew what his love needed. One of Eddie's hands drifted upwards, all the way until he was caressing his cheek.

"Open up, baby."

Steve's lips parted and Eddie slipped two fingers between them, letting his boyfriend suck to his heart's content while they rutted against in the back of his van. It was fucking heaven. Steve moaned around his fingers, so greedy for it that he grabbed Eddie's wrist as if he would ever take them away.

Eddie was looking up at an absolute vision. It was like Steve was using him to get off. And that thought had Eddie bucking into him as he came, certain the van was rocking now. Steve looked down, moaning at the sight of the wet spot in Eddie's pants. That pushed Steve over the edge and he bit down lightly on Eddie's fingers as he did.

The air was filled with their panting while they came down from their high."

"Mmm", Eddie moaned as he took his fingers from Steve's mouth. "Got any other family obligations? A wedding? A graduation?"

"You lookin' to book another appearance already?", Steve grinned.

"If my compensation is like this, I'll be as regular as a fiber pill."

Steve couldn't choose between laughing or kissing so he did both, pressing his lips to Eddie while giggling through it.

Y'all got me thinking so hard abt mafia wukong I'm dropping. Some things I've thought of in the last like five minutes for your viewing pleasure LOL feel free to ignore me or delete this I am running off like two hours of sleep

-Wukong probably holds an annual sort of, dinner for those serving directly under him. It's probably a night for information to be passed around, big terf reports to be given, that kind of thing. Only the ones that answer directly to him are invited, the ones directly under him in the hierarchy, so probably like, the DBK family if they're involved, Macaque, his inner circle, so to speak. I imagine it's held in a restaurant on their terf, or that they have control over, so it's only them being served that night.

- At these dinners everyone has a set seat. The seat to Wukong's left is always for MK and the seat to his right is always for Reader. Bad things happen if you mess with those seats!

- And gods help you when Wukong has a little too much wine to drink! He's handsy when he's stone cold sober, he's even worse when he's tipsy and/or drunk. An ISFD ask from someone who isn't already lost in the sauce? (<-Self call-out) O glorious day!

Gosh, there's so much, I don't really know where to start. I've been following this micro-fandom for YEARS now, and it's one of those things that just keeps on giving. The amount of lost/missing content and the frickin nuked forum (I'm a survivor, baebee!!) really does sometimes make it feel like the universe is trying to wipe us out, but hey. ISFD fans are basically cockroaches. Killable in theory, but surprisingly hearty in an actual life or death of a fandom scenario.

As for the actual content of ISFD that I engage in, I'm a rare(?) case where I kinda dabble in everything. I can confidently say I'm a member of the ** original ** gen of fans, so I've been around for the noteable eras, and have obsessed over every major character group at one time or another, as well as some niche characters (Cyan and his 2 other fans, rise up 🔥🔥)

I gotta say though, I am currently obsessed with the mafia portion of the universe (and, tbh, by extension, the Marama family. They are to me what the Kardashians are to some)

In particular, Phillip Varic has been my consistent blorbo since last September. It is not an exaggeration to say I've averaged about 40 drawings of him a month since then (my friends and I have counted. I should be on my strange addiction at this point, tbh. Or seeking other professional insight)

I realize I kinda derailed from answering your original ask because the mafia brainrot is debilitating and chronic, but I'm not entirely sure how I'd go about answering it anyway because there is just. So, so much world and lore to glean from ISFD, and none of it in any easy or direct way. Honestly though? The mafia might not be a bad place to start? If you want, I can tell you as much as I know about the cast and dynamics of the mafia, because I feel like a lot of the mafia character's lore and backgrounds act as a good segway to other noteable aspects of the larger ISFD narratives and the in-world political climate as a whole (Especially Mask and Howard. Not to single those poor souls out, but genuinely. How are they both gonna be so afflicted by the narrative like that)

For that trope kimchay challenge. My favourite trope is role reversal au (like for example Chay being mafia and Kim being ordinary person). My least favourite au is college au. I think it is mostly to do with me being no longer in school so I don't find this trope that appealing. Especially when it all revolves around being in school and dorms etc. Thank you for writing it. You are great writer and I like this challenge too.

OKAY so I've been thinking a lot about a college AU and how to make a kimchay college AU appealing to the post-college reader. I think college AUs usually focus on the things you've mentioned - classes, dorms, young adult social life and sex, etc.

But. That's not technically the purpose of college. The purpose of college is to figure out and get trained in whatever you want to do with your life.

From what I can tell from BL, universities there make you choose what you're majoring in when you first apply. In my world Chay chooses to go somewhere where he can take care of his generals first and then declare his major at the end of his second year.

When Kim first asked why Chay was studying music, he said he wanted to do it because it seemed fun. But by the end of Kinnporsche, I think Chay realizes he can't live on fun anymore.

Honestly he never could, which is why he said in ep. 1 something along the lines of "I don't think school can help us anymore" about trying to clear the impossible debt. I think he doesn't see a future in which they can keep dodging the loan sharks until he graduates, so why does it matter what he actually studies. There's a reason he shoots his shot with Kim, and it's because to an extent he's living like he's doesn't know how much time he has left.

Post show they've made it out from under the loan sharks... now they're just living under the thumb of the mafia. We know Chay is opposed to the dangers of the mafia, I think he'd probably resent the money he now has access to. But it does change the timeline for him. He knows he'll be able to afford tuition for all his years of college now, and that puts college back on the table as something valuable.

If he ever wants to completely separate himself from the mafia, that's going to mean being able to support himself independently. He knows what it is to be poor, and need to take out loans. He and Porsche were happy together when they didn't have money, of course, but he thinks they would have been even happier and less stressed if they hadn't had to worry about loan sharks at their door.

All that to say, he might still love music, but he might want to choose a field of study with more financial stability than music.

So after a year of being miserable in the compound he goes back to college, just doing his generals since he doesn't know yet what he wants to do with his life. And maybe somewhere in that first year he and Kim make up, and continue making music together. They grow to be so happy together

But when it comes time for Chay to declare a major, he and Kim end up fighting about it.

Kim thinks Chay should study music, because it's what he always wanted to study, and he's so good at it. But Chay thinks that maybe he should choose something "practical" instead. Business, or engineering, or computer science.

It's the classic passion or practicality conundrum everyone not born rich wrestles with at least a little bit.

Kim does not understand, they have the privilege of being rich why don't take advantage of it and follow their passions. He knows Chay doesn't like the maifa, but he sees Chay trying to pick something "practical" and a rejection of Kim himself. Because it's not practical to love and be with him if Chay is trying to break away from the family long term.

I don't know exactly how they'd resolve it. I think I'd like to see Chay take the practical studying. I'm always seeing media telling you to follow your dreams and it'll all work out alright - but the shows, movies, and books that proclaim that are all made by people who were capable of succeeding in following their dreams, and so are able to glorify and say that if you just want it hard enough and work yourself hard enough that it'll happen.

I want to focus on the joy and comfort of a quiet, stable life. I think Chay and Kim would like that too, eventually. But I think they'd have to work to get to a place where they realize that's an okay thing to want.

Anyway, this is less of an outline for a fic and more of a vibe, but I think it could be an interesting character study!

Bi-Han is protective of Kuai Liang, we all know that, but he's even more so in an unfamiliar place. He will not let Kuai Liang out of his sight and glares at anyone who tries to talk to them

It's also hard for them bc they're in the home of their ancient enemy (in the fic I think you're talking about Jiahao, their father, was killed by the Lin Kuei alongside their mother and sister) and no one here knows that they are Lin Kuei, they think that they are the children of some kind of mafia family from overseas, given their lingering american accents

So they're hiding their origins and powers at all costs, no one can ever find out bc they are both terrified they will be thrown out and if they are the Lin Kuei will find them and kill them

But, going too long without using their powers hurts them so they still train in secret in the middle of the night, but it isn't enough to keep them from getting ill.

Hanzo does find out at one point, by accident, when he catches them practicing while trying to sneak in to see Kuai Liang

Bi-Han, pinning Hanzo to a wall with an ice knife to his throat: Why were you trying to sneak into my brother's room in the middle of the night!?

Hanzo, Kuai Liang's boyfriend: Oh, gee, I wonder

Hanzo is quickly sworn to secrecy and agrees to help them hide their former clan affiliation, leading to him and Bi-Han becoming reluctant allies even though they don't get along (they fake it for Kuai Liang tho)

Kaede and Eiko (Hanzo's parents) immediately take Kuai Liang and Bi-Han in, they are as protective of the two cryomancers as Bi-Han is, which shocks them both.

The first time that Eiko gives Bi-Han a hug he cries bc it feels so much like his mom's hugs

Eiko and Kaede realize that the boys are Lin Kuei on day one and help cover for them without revealing that they know, wanting to wait for the boys to feel comfortable telling them in their own time

Bi-Han ends up training as a warrior under Osamu alongside Hanzo, which they both hate but put up with, while Kuai Liang trains under the grandmaster

Joel rolls his eyes and turns to Midge. "You got anything to say to your son?"

"Oh, so when he makes wildly inappropriate jokes about mafia hits, it's my fault?" Midge asks.

Joel nods. "Yes."

Midge nods back. "Actually, that's fair. Ethan. Not at the dinner table. Save it for dessert."

"Sure, Ma."

"Real nice," Joel grumbles.

Lily giggles, though everyone knows she's too young to understand exactly what she's laughing at.

"Oh, is something funny?" Noah asks his little niece, reaching out to tickle her. "I'll give you something funny."

Lily giggles and squirms, and Astrid laughs, while Chaim (eight and too smart) reaches out to help with the tickling.

"Not too much, she'll throw up," Rose warns, looking mildly amused at the spectacle.

"Yes, let's not end the night with vomit," Midge agrees.

"This is why the children should eat in the kitchen," Abe grumbles.

"The kitchen in our apartment isn't big enough for all six kids to eat comfortably without one of them sitting on the counter," Lenny tells him. "And this is too much fun."

"Sure. Fun," Joel grumbles.

"Cheer up, Joely," Shirley tells her son, patting his hand. "These dinners aren't half as horrible as they were when you and Midge first separated."

"And nothing ever will be," Moishe agrees. "And it's...not so bad having all the kids around. God knows Esther holds her when in a debate."

Esther smiles proudly, and Lenny knows that she'll make a hell of a lawyer one of these days. He nudges her and grins with pride. "Lookit you, impressing the hardasses at the table."

Esther giggles and shoves at his face as he ruffles her hair.

Kitty beams happily and rests her head on Midge's shoulder. "I like eating with everybody. It feels nice."

Midge strokes her hair away from her face and kisses her temple. "Well I like having you all around the table."

"Where's Auntie Susie?" Lily asks, now perched on her uncle's knee and eating some of the leftover rice on his plate.

"Auntie Susie had to go to one of her client's gigs tonight," Midge explains. "But she said to eat an extra apple tart for her for dessert."

Lily's eyes go wide with excitement. "Two apple tarts?"

"Oh, she'll definitely throw up from two," Astrid chimes in.

"We'll split a second one, kiddo," Noah promises. "And then we'll look at the big plant book Papa Abe got you for Hanukkah."

"Flower book!" Lily squeaks happily.

"Midge, you gave birth to a nerd," Joel teases.

"The best nerd," Midge beams, glancing at Lenny.

He grins back and steals one of Esther's carrots, getting him whacked in the arm, making him and the rest of the able laugh.

8. Bed sharing or roommates AU?

Ohhhhhh it's got to be bed sharing, maybe it's the fact that it's canon that they shared a bed during quarantine, but Buck and Eddie sharing a bed makes me feral, especially if it starts out platonic. In general, I love the one-bed trope. I really want to write a bed sharing fic, like there's only one bed on a road trip to El Paso or combining that with fake dating and they have to share a bed, maybe they're on holiday with Eddie's family and they're faking a relationship to get them off Eddie's back and there's only one bed...

9. Fake dating or arranged marriage?

For Buddie I love fake dating, I love those two idiots not really having to do much more to convince people that they're dating and then they realise that they're in love and they've practically been dating this whole time! or even better when one of them is pinning and in love and they agree to fake date the other to help and it's just full of Angst. In general, I probably lean towards the fake dating trope, though I'm not against the arranged marriage trope when it comes to fantasy. There might be a little bit on arranged marriage in my Mafia AU.

12. Friends with benefits or secret dating?

This one was hard, I love both of these but I think I lean more towards friends with benefits because I just love the angst. Especially when they realise they've fallen in love and think the other doesn't love them back. Secret dating is hot though and I might write a fic about them dating and fucking behind the team's back. But also secret dating in AU's ugh I love that.
