It’s only been 4 months since both you and Seonghwa have agreed to date each other and label the pairing officially as “boyfriend and girlfriend”. Sighing, you shifted a little bit from side to side, as a hope to ease the uncomfortable pain, but it only made it worse and you emitted a groan, “I was going to ask if you could come over and watch a movie with me or whatever. I could really use it.” 

Another chuckle, “Is something the matter?”

“Uh, yea. I woke up and my abdomen and entire body ached. I feel like I’m on fire and I just want to relax.”

“So,” Seonghwa began, “You want me to come over and massage you?”

You tried using the restroom, but that didn’t help either. You immediately assumed nothing would release this awful ache you had.

Maybe you just slept wrong, or you’ve had too much stress placed on you. All the possibilities were rushing to you as you waited on the couch, laying there like a limp fish, with your neck over the back of the couch and your hands laying palm up on your thighs. When the door opened, you didn’t flinch, and instead cried out. “Seonghwa…” Elongating the syllable at the end of his name, you pretended to cry.

“I’m coming.” He cooed, kicking off his shoes, “Tell me what’s wrong.” He stood over you, leaning down to kiss your lips, “You said your entire body hurt. Did anything help?”

Shaking your head, you frowned, “Sit with me.”

so, to jog your re(memories), though, i highly doubt you'll need the refresher, you are all sharp as tacks and extremely brilliant, therefore, really just to set the scene for myself, we are in ravenstan's room,

which, because the crimson dawn sicktorian manwhorsion was ofc, once a very grand, luxurious upscale, upstate new york 1800s manor, a lot of the old furnishings stayed, so stan's room is basically this huge gothic vampire boy bedroom with a massive four column upholstery bed and beautiful black lace canopy that drapes down,

there's a huge dark-finish, wooden boudoir and matching vanity that is all hand-carved, very elegant, ancient and intricate...and also sticker-bombed with a million shitty, half-peeled skater-boy stickers...there's a chandelier and one of stan's combat boots is hanging from it and probably underwear, smh. metal posters all over the wall, dirty laundry all over the fancy ornate rug, half empty cheesy poof and taki bags, eye makeup smeared on Everything, especially the nice cool mirror, nasty crumbs in the bed ( stan did wipe those off before kyle sat...true luv ), lots of cringey stanime figurines on the old antique shelves. jers did comment on this like '...sailor moon?' and stan scoffed, a little defensive, and was like 'what's more badass and punk rock then a bunch of girls kicking ass and saving the galaxy?'

what started out as a very awkward conversation and confrontation about raven of crimson dawn being trans has melted away into silly banter and shit-shooting between our two favorite boys who, though, by kyle's knowledge, have not known each other for more than a month, have extremely good conversational chemistry and are playful and vulnerable with each other in a way that suggests that they have been best friends and known each other all their lives...

...Interesting.

as their conversation moves from light-hearted subject matter and descends further into the darkness that surrounds very heavy shit, kyle, who has gotten pretty comfortable surprisingly, starts to speak in the heavy jersey accent before trying to smooth and iron it out.

this little exchange insues:

kyle says that, it's risky, but worth the reward, because ravenstan after a steep and shaky breath, dives into an abridged, sparknotes version of the pre-crimson dawn days, how it used to be a pipe dream, a little garage band thing the boys did for fun, hungry for fame but eating top ramen and drinking sunny d everyday, unaware that they would ever get recognized...

( my favorite pre-cd headstannon is actually is that on the fateful, fearful, tearful night of the concert they got scouted at, they're trying on their lil emo boy outfits in the bathroom to hype themselves up, stan is nervous to come out bc he thinks he looks stupid...he's wearing some dumb hot topic-y, party city vampire costume thing kenny got him as a joke w/ his eyeliner on...the boys get him to come out and they are all immediately GAGGED because why is our awkward, boy fail king...SEXY??? like stan why are you hOT??? and they start all barking and throwing money at him and trying to have him do a spin which was so nice bc he was so nervous. my boys. </3 )

then they do get recognized, shot into stardom and everything seems golden! but...it's pyrite. because cartman or the evil 'e' basically assigns them these little 'parts' to play in his perfectly placed show, stan says he just wanted to do what kenny did, sing his songs and not talk too much, just share his music...but e has kenny and stan swap personalities essentially and stan becomes raven. which, at first, was worth it because he got to preform, but it just became this thing he dreads, acting all high and mighty when he just feels fucking tiny and horrible, that he isn't allowed to write songs anymore and they all, essentially...Belong To E.

so, ravenstan's eyes are rimmed red...the way one's would if they had been crying, he's also been periodically sniffling. feeling rarely kind and gentle, jerseykyle very tentatively asks if he's been crying and hope that it's not because kyle saw him in the mirror.

stan shakes his head and tells him that it's because he's been reading a lot of insidious internet comments about him. marjorine told him not to, but it's hard not to listen when everyone is talking about you. he goes onto say that for every person that 'loves' him, five other people hate him. that there's always something wrong with him. his eyes are too far apart or close together, his lips are a weird shape, one hip is bigger than the other. there are accounts dedicated just to zooming in on his pants, weird horrible deep fake porn of him, the paps catching him buying tampons, trying to figure out who they're for and if he's secretly seeing someone ( he laughs and smiles, but it doesn't meet his eyes ) and that...he feels hideous. :(

Demarcus is a 6’10” blasian elf nerd who loves everything to do with nature, marine life, reading, writing, baking, and more. He’s 22 years old and is also a freelance author! Most of his writings are well known, so he’s kinda famous among the reader community. People mistaken him for being “mean” and “intimidating” due to his insanely tall height and huge muscular frame; but he’s the sweetest pie you’ll ever meet! Always willing to lend a hand and be helpful while also giving out great ideas and can have a pretty logical mindset. It’s like he’s a walking dictionary/encyclopedia with the way he knows so much.

However, don’t take Demarcus’s kind and sweet demeanor as him being innocent. Some believe that elves are “known to be innocent beings”, but trust me, Demarcus is far from it (wink wonk). Sometimes he can get a little too logical and controlling to where it gets annoying to others, but these are things he’s actively trying to work on.

Jayden Issac Young

Jayden Issac Young — mostly known as Jayden or ‘Jay’ is a black, half human eldritch, who’s pretty outspoken, hyper, energetic, and a colorful being who also happens to be a horror/slasher character, and has a secretive dark lifestyle underneath clown’s sunshine persona. He’s mysterious, eerie, creepy, and can be off-putting here and there. He takes shit from no one and likes doing whatever— in his own words, “the fuck he wanna do.”

Clown…pretty much does whatever clown sees fit. Mostly a rule-breaker/a rebellious little rebel (and menace), Jayden is 22 years old and stands at 5’9”! Despite confetti’s unsettling ways, confetti is pretty chill and a foolish creature. Jayden’s the life of the party and doesn’t hesitate to make things interesting. Clown loves the attention and is very confident in himself, not caring about what anyone else says or thinks. He doesn’t care too much for labels and lives life with daredevil-ish tendencies. He works as a clown entertainer while also focusing on his online business called JAY★C0RE .ᐟ where he sells a lot of bright and colorful things!

Xavier is a 21 year old, black, & (former) royal vampire who’s very into music, art, and anything related to the emo, punk, and gothic culture + style. While xe doesn’t like to talk about xyr royal lifestyle, xe’s pretty content and happy with the normal and simple life xyr living, throwing that royal lifestyle behind. Xavier isn’t very open and can be really blunt, mysterious and or “odd” / “too creepy” to others.

People assume that Xavier’s mean or rude due to xis lack of expression and how xis face is displayed, but Xavier is actually a sweet and decent person underneath xyr gothic/emo, awkward/anxious, and quiet persona. Though, xe has trouble speaking/communicating with others due to xis anxieties and also deals with selective mutism due to the fact. Xe works at a cat cafe while doing freelance art + being both a ghost writer and vocalist for xis brother’s band on the side!

Min Jeonghan — Or also known as Jovanni is a 21 year old, regular, black, human standing at 4’10”, who’s very country and like a southern mama. He loves the south and everything to do with the country! Being raised on the farm and having to help his father; Jeonghan is stronger than people think. While some people underestimate him for his height, demeanor, and lack of intelligence; Jovanni carries himself very well and motherly. He doesn’t always play a “dumb bimbo” role, nor do they always intentionally act stupid on purpose. Jovanni simply wears his heart on his sleeve and really enjoys helping others and caring for them as if they were his babies.

He welcomes anyone with open arms and isn’t quick to judge right off the bat. However, if you do something to Jeonghan that he doesn’t like, he may never trust you again — and trust me, it’s super hard to break Jovanni’s trust. Jeonghan doesn’t try to think ill of anyone (unless it’s his mother) and always tries to be optimistic / viewing things on the bright side. However, sometimes they end up getting treated like a doormat and have people walk over him due to how super sweet and nice they are. Jovanni is willing to do things to please others as long as they’re happy while dismissing their own self-worth and happiness. He doesn’t really have a job!

Best friends Quinn and Carlisle have known each other since they were born, practically. Through school, they defended and protected one another. Despite the fact that it was practically a crime for occults to mix, their parents made a truce at birth to end such a discriminatory rule, forcing occults to believe their supremacy over others, and ranking them like some kind of game. When Quinn had to go and hunt for plasma, Carlisle always had the perfect story to cover her. When Carlisle needed an extra week of sleep after a horrible Werewolf fury, Quinn knew exactly what to tell their teachers. On Quinn's 16th birthday, Carlisle bought her a grey sphynx from the shelter. She was only a year old, and had little crossed eyes, both a different colour. Quinn fell in love with her the moment she saw her, and she named her Pippa. After tiringly making it through school, Carlisle, Quinn and Pippa lived together, in an unsuspicious, gothic manor. Carlisle designed it themselves, with a lovely basement for Quinn covered in pastels and cats, and a loft for themselves, covered in ripped clothes and half-opened food packets. During a visit to the vets, for Pippa's yearly check-up, Carlisle met a cute receptionist, who went by the name of Sonia. Despite Carlisle's struggle with commitment, she had a charm, something that really drew them in. They quickly fell in love, and within 6 months were happily engaged. Somehow, many visits to the VenPhelion Manor were seemingly normal for Sonia. She did not ask Carlisle many questions, except for who the architect was. However, it soon became apparent. Quinn, in an unexpected vampire frenzy, lunged for Sonia, desperate for blood. Upon a single bite, she came to the realisation that the blood tasted foul. It was like drinking glitter glue, and Quinn was sick for a week; this outed Sonia's life as a Spellcaster. At first, they were embarrassed, but quickly realised that Carlisle was aware of Quinn's identity, and vice versa. It was a smooth transition from there, with the 3 (and Pippa!) living comfortable and stable lives. As stable as a life can be for the unalive. And yet, somehow, the chaos was not over. One day, Pippa went missing. Quinn and Carlisle were devastated, and Carlisle spent nights upon end searching for her. Eventually, she came to an odd pod in the corner of Henford-On-Bagley. A young man occupied there, by the name of Jax. However, when Carlisle saw him, hugging Pippa, he did not look much like a man. In fact, their skin was blue, and her eyes the most eerie, empty black! There was no violence, or speaking. There was pure confusion, and awkwardness. "Hey, yo uh. Can I get my cat back from you there pal?" A deep pair of confused eyes look at the cat, and then at the werewolf, and then at the cat, and at the wolf again. "Your.. cat?" "Yes, my cat! Pippa! She's been missing for weeks and to be honest I just want her home." Slowly reaching out, Jax placed the cat into Carlisle's waiting hands. They turned on their foot and headed home. And Jax followed the whole way. It was never really discussed; he just lived there from that point onward. He had his own room, and computer, and bookshelf, and he made good friends with the others there. No one ever questioned how Jax came to live in the VenPhelion Manor, it just occurred, and it was clear no one minded. thank god i got that shit out of my brain bro its getting to smooth in here

My least favorites are probably what this person defined as "mopey" goths which is the MAJOR stereotype most people think of when they think goth (annoyingly) and I don't even think I've met or seen one outside of old movies 😳 the other is "Baby bat" where it's more about the shock factor but it makes sense since it's usually teens. Was not a fan of the description of older goths disliking them for not being alive in the 80's or not having enough money to *wheeze* afford better clothing I just- *wheeze*

I love the gothic style and I'm part of a few of the subcategories but *laughs* Let me be a bit "ageist" here by saying/asking about how hateful older goths seem to be. we decided to watch all story cutscenes from the new resident evil village videogame on a whim, since it’s not really our cup of tea gameplay-wise but seems to be this massive zeitgeist moment that made us morbidly curious. ... fuck the reason I’m hung up on this is specifically because the rest of the game is so tonally dexterous (which is a shining point to me! more on that later!), and yet they felt weirdly compelled to create the aesthetic trapping of a family-at-odds trope without following it through too well. a sign of both the good and the bad stuff to come

but listen the real reason why I wanted to talk about any of this is to nitpick the fascinating backwards-engineered nucleus of the entire thing; in that this game essentially creates a melting pot of just SO many disparate horror tropes and then makes a no-holds-barred unhinged effort at weaving thick lore to piece them all together. it is truly a sight to behold. like straight up you got your backwoods fright night situation, your gothic castle vampires, your rural-industrial werewolves, and don’t forget your bloated swamp monsters over there, with then a hard left turn into robotic body horror, and the entire ass subgenre of Creepy Doll writ large, and the bloodborne tentacle monsters, and a hellboy angel bossfight, which rides on the coattails of a mech-on-mech pacific rim bonanza, and just jesus henry christ slow down

almost all of these are textural hijack jobs that don’t really get into the metaphor plain of any of those settings but the game sort-of makes an argument that the texture IS the point and revels in it. It is kind of admirable almost. The same reason why the intro felt boxed in and unmotivated is also why the rest of the game just blasts off of its hinges to the point of complete and self-indulgent tonal abandon. I kinda loved that about it. lady dimitrescu made sure to hold her hat down as she bent forward in mahogany doorways and then suddenly she’s a giant gore dragon and you settle in your temp role as dark souls man with Gun to take her ass down. Excellent??

this rhino rampage impulse to gobble up every horror aesthetic known to man comes to head when the game wrestles with its FPS trappings in what is the most hilarious solution in creating visceral player damage moments. Since most cinematics and the entire game is in first person, that leaves precious little real estate for the devs to work with if they really want to sell griffin’s physical crucible. To wit. This dude’s forearms. Specifically just the forearms. They are MASSACRED throughout the story. The poor man lives out the silent hill dimension of a hand model. by the end cutscene he looks like a neatly dressed desk clerk who had decided to stick both his grabbers into garbage disposal grinders just a few hours prior. like in addition to everything else it manages to rope in that tinge of slapstick violence into its general grievous genre collection except this time it IS for a lack of trying! truly incredible

but wait his miracle clawbacks from everything his poor paws go through are retroactively explained away, yes, but far too vaguely and far too late to console me as I sat and watched everyone’s favorite baby brother reattach an entirely severed hand to his wrist stump by just. placing it on there. and giving it a lil twist ‘n pop terminator-style. and then willing his fingers back into motion right in front of my bulging eyes. this game just does not care. it does not give a shit. and boy howdy will it work to make that into one of its strongest suits

cause generally speaking resident evil was THE premiere vanilla zombie content destinaysh for like a decade, right? and as the rest of the world and mainstream media started encroaching and bloodying its blue ocean it went and just exploded in every single conceivable horror trope direction like a smilodon on catnip. truly, genuinely fascinating franchise moves

yeah the big vampire milf is hot. other news; grass... green. although I do love the implication that her closet is just identical white dresses on a rack. cartoon network-level queen shit

apropos of nothing I’ve said there’s also this hobo dante-devimaycry-magneto man, and I can’t believe this sentence makes sense. anyway he made that “boulder-punching asshole” joke referring to chris redfield and it was probably the only easter egg that really landed for me and boy did it land hard. I have not seen him punch the boulder in re5, mind. I had only heard about how funny it is from friends. and here this dude was, probably in the same exact mindset as me, trying to grapple with that insane mental image. with you on that ian mckellen, loud and clear

I advocate vehemently against the shallow pursuit of hyper photorealism in art direction but I gotta admit it works really in favor of immersive horror like this. the european village shacks especially gave me super unchill flashbacks to my rural countryside retreat in western georgia. I could smell the linoleum dude. not cool

faces are weird in this game. can’t place it. nice textures, good animation, but the modeling template is... uuh strange? and the hair. it has that clustered-flat-clumpy look that harkens to something very specific and unpleasant but I just don’t know what. sue me

very long read about missing being a kid so

but roblox actually does mean a lot to me. it was one of the first mmo games i played as a kid next to switchin and maid marian. its the reason why even tho i dont particularly favor the fantasy genre, i still like mmorpgs and have a soft spot for them. and especially now that switchin is gone completely and roblox is left, still kicking, and you can do so much more stuff in it than you could from 2006 to 2014, theres honestly very little reason why i WOULDNT keep playing it. other than the fact that im 21.

which is the reason why i get scared letting anyone know i play it. i dont play it because im a ytber trying to get money from roblox kids videos, i dont play it to scam or bully kids, i dont even play it to pretend to be a kid. i just, play it, because it means a lot to me. i honestly consider it my comfort game next to half-life.

i remember being a kid and playing a ton of spooky and silly games on there. this camping roleplay game, the classic zombie infection, a horror game you explored an abandoned hospital and every like 3 mins there was a random scary image that showed up on screen for one second. i LOVED playing the classic high school roleplay, back when the skateboard worked perfectly fine and we didnt have to rely on the community to getting it to work. back when you couldnt choose to be both a senior or a cheerleader but it was fine yo be both cause that meant you were one of the older cool kids

and the styles back then. i miss them so much. the beanie hair hats, the striped shirts with butterfly and skull printed graphics. DC hoodies. some random band tees even tho most of the kids who wore them only liked the bands most popular songs. i remember playing vampire roleplay because it was the grungiest and most gothic emo thing in the community at the time. the true goth little kid experience of playing those games to wear the dark edgy clothes and playing the mysterious character who lurks in the shadows.

i remember the original adopt and raise a baby. so many people going around in baby and dog morphs trying to find families, trying to rp with so many people at the same time, making their avatar looked a lot better than it did in reality and PRAYING to not die so that they didnt get found out as a faker or noob.

i actually like newer roblox even for this reason, because not only have the devs of games on there gotten better, but theres so many styles now, especially styles that im so happy to see being picked up by kids, like goth or emo or scene or punk. im even happy seeing people be things like softies and slenders and cnps. i love it all. im so happy that its now an actual community on there, with different people and so many more things to do. its honestly like a lil society at this point.

i love this game. it means a lot to me. im not a kid anymore, but thats fine. that doesnt mean i cant love something. at the end of it all, a game is a game. and i know later down the line i'll be happy knowing i didnt let my age get the best of me fully.

DEN OF GEEK CRITICS’ PICKS

The Ninth Gate

Though director Roman Polanski is a horrific figure himself, this 1999 neo-noir horror film, The Ninth Gate is superb. Thirty years after Rosemary’s Baby, Polanski conjured the devil once again and injected it with some of the pulp from his noir classic Chinatown in a movie that finds Johnny Depp as a man in Satanic Detective mode. Depp is a classic book authenticator hired to authenticate De Umbrarum Regis Novum Portis (The Nine Doors To the Kingdom of Shadows), a book believed by cultists capable of raising Satan to Earth. 

The Ninth Gate doesn’t provide cheap thrills; it tightens the suspense like a noose. Polanski subtly creates an uneasy atmosphere using minimal effects. The director knows where evil lives and lets the settings and sound make the invitations with subliminal references to recognizable horror and cinematic danger, using framing and music similarly to Stanley Kubrick. The Ninth Gate packages its scares with classy style that the characters deliver with sexily provocative intelligence. Dean Corso may be Johnny Depp’s greatest spiritual transformation, from odious to ultimate evil and the audience cheers on his descent, happy to ride with him straight to hell.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Perhaps the world’s first horror film and a go-to example of early German Expressionist filmmaking, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari has been unsettling audiences for over a century. 

The film’s main story centers on two young friends, Francis and Alan (Friedrich Feher and Hans Heinrich von Twardowski), who, while jockeying for the affections of Jane (Lil Dagover), visit a local traveling carnival. There they take in the act of the mysterious, top-hatted and wild-haired Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss). As they watch, Caligari awakens his somnambulist subject, Cesare (the great Conrad Veidt), who under hypnosis answers questions from the audience. When Alan jokingly asks when he will die, Cesare responds “Before dawn.” We’ll let you guess the rest.

The film isn’t remembered much for its story, but for its arresting visual style, featuring painted backdrops that make the entire production feel like a fever dream. The painted townscape is filled with curved and pointed buildings teetering at dangerous angles, almost as if they were alive and shrieking. Roads twist and spiral to nowhere. The perspectives are deliberately mismatched and inconsistent, with the props and sets sometimes being too large for the characters, and others too small. The result is a transgressive, deeply influential film that has been unsettling audiences for over 100 years.

The Exorcist III

Based on his 1983 novel Legion, writer-director William Peter Blatty’s Exorcist III arrived 17 years after William Friedkin’s The Exorcist. Despite the still-looming pop culture presence of the original, The Exorcist III is sneakily the most interesting film in the series. Less a horror movie than a psychological thriller with supernatural and spiritual overtones, The Exorcist III takes place 17 years after the events of the first film, and with no reference whatsoever made to the events in the second. It finds Lt. Kinderman confronted with the apparent reappearance of two figures from his past who had supposedly died. The first is father Damien Karras (Jason Miller), who had died after bouncing down an endless flight of steps while performing an exorcism in the original movie, and the Gemini Killer, a serial killer loosely based on the Zodiac Killer that had been executed 17 years prior. However, there’s been a new string of murders around town carrying all the hallmarks of the Gemini.

While the studio famously mangled Blatty’s original cut of the film, there’s still a lot to like here, including a terrifying performance from Brad Dourif. Blatty is fantastic at creating dread-inducing atmosphere and has a keen attention to character and detail. It may not be as exciting as the original, but it’s a smart-slow burn film worthy of the Exorcist mantle.

The Devil’s Rejects

An homage to sleazy ‘70s C-movies, Rob Zombie’s sequel to House of 1,000 Corpses will leave you in the need of a shower, but it’s delightfully demented and the musician turned filmmaker’s finest effort. The shock-fest finds the Firefly clan, Otis (Bill Moseley), Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie) and Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) – on the run from die-hard determined sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe). What unfolds is a nasty thrill ride full of twists, turns, and more gore than most audiences are comfortable with. How Zombie still manages to make such repulsive content entertaining, how he manages to get you to almost root for the despicable Firefly clan, is inexplicable magic trick, but indebted to Zombie’s use of black humor and deep knowledge of genre conventions that he sometimes subverts, but often gleefully leans into.

Train to Busan

The overused and increasingly predictable zombie genre got a shot in the arm with Train to Busan, a South Korean film from director Yeon Sang-ho about a young father desperately attempting to get his little daughter to her mother via train as a zombie pandemic breaks out all around them. Even if it veered close to outright sentimentality at times, Train to Busan differed from most of the films and TV shows we’ve seen in this genre due to its genuine bond of love between its main characters, and the flickers of empathy and humanity found therein. 

And on a technical level, Yeon crafted his film with a kinetic energy that had been missing from the genre as of late. Train to Busan was not just a monster hit in its native land but amassed an international following as well, along with critical acclaim across the board. It’s easy to see why given the film’s well-drawn characters, subtle social commentary (some on the train feel they are more worthy of survival than others) and frightening action sequences that add up to a thrilling and emotionally powerful ride.

Dante groaned as he heard a tap on his window. He looked at his clock and swore. It was 3am.

Fangs was sound asleep in his bed, limbs twisted in odd directions, and snoring. Dante got up quietly and opened the curtains to see CD grinning at him. He yanked open the window and grabbed his friend by the ear.

“Ow-shit!” CD hissed, and pulled away, running his ear with a frown, “why you gotta do that for?”

“It’s three in the fuckin mornin, stupid, why you here?”

“I need someone to come with me to Ignacio’s-“

“You’re banned-“

“I got money-pleaseee man? I’ll give ya a kiss-“ Dante shoved at his chest.

“That was one time, man.”

CD snickered, as Dante sighed, “I’m using your money to buy my smokes-“

“Ey-“

“If you’re making me buy ya shit, I’m rewardin myself.”

“Ugh, fine...just hurry up! Hazard might wake up and then my ass will really be gone. She gonna tell ma and everything-“

Dante rolled his eyes, and climbed out of his window, making sure to be quiet, and leave it open a crack so he could get back in.

“If my abuela catches me, she’ll whoop both our asses-“

“Yeah yeah” Cd waved his hand vaguely, before slinging his arm over Dante’s shoulder.

CD handed him the money as they got close to the bodega.

“You remember what I like-“

“Yeah yeah-“ Dante entered the shop as CD stood outside, shoving his hands in his pockets and rocking back and forth on his toes. As he waited, he heard two people approach, laughing, until they neared. He didn’t turn until he felt a tap on his shoulder.

It was Malachai, and his friend Nai. The two were an odd pair; Malachai, tall, and decked in spikes, denim, and leather, and Nai, pale skin contrasted by the gothic getup she had, CD was sure she was a vampire, and he didn’t wanna mess with that. They did throw ragers, though, CD had attended a good handful.

“Romulus” Malachai slung an arm over Nai’s shoulder, and she shrugged him off.

“Malachai, long time no see”

“Whatchu doin out here?”

“What about you? Ain’t this serpent territory?”

“Just passin through...midnight stroll and all.”

At that moment, Dante exited the shop, cig tucked behind his ear, and one hanging loosely from his lips.

“Fuck you doin here, Martinez?” It was too late to deal with The ghoulie.

“Just chatting with my good friend, Romulus, and passing through, isn’t that right, Nai?”

The short girl just sighed.

“This ain’t your territory, last I checked.”

“And what if I say no?” Malachai puffed up his chest, still a good head shorter than the Serpent, a wide grin stretched eerily across his features.

“We’ll be going” Nai pulled at his hand once and he didn’t budge. She sighed again and yanked the teenager, hard, causing him to stumble back, a string of expletives escaping from him.

“Let’s. Go.” She gritted through her teeth, and he grumbled, but obeyed. CD and Dante hid their snickers behind their hands.

As the two were gone from sight, Dante shoved the bag of food and drinks into Cd’s hands.

“Change is in there.” He took a lighter from his pocket and lit the cig in his mouth. Cd reached over and plucked the one from behind the other teen’s ear and placed it between his lips.

“Light?”

“Those are my cigs” Dante pulled it from his lips.

“And it’s my money” cd snatched it back and reached for his friend’s lighter.

“Aht!” Dante smacked his hand away, “you stole my last one-“

“I have it somewhere-“ Cd made another attempt but Dante held it high above his head. Cd huffed, before snatching the cigarette from Dante’s mouth and booking it down the road.

“Asshole!” Dante called after him, but didn’t run; he was too tired for that shit. He pulled out another cig and lit it as he sauntered home.

As he closed the window behind him, he heard a giggle, and saw Fangs sitting on his bed, hands clasped over his mouth in glee.

“Why were you gone?” His baby brother whispered.

“None of ya business. Out-“ Dante hissed.

“I’m not moving” Fangs crossed his arms tightly, “not unless there’s something in it for me”

“Mierde” Dante muttered, “I can move you myself-“

“You swore!”

“I’ll do a lot more than swear-move it!”

“I’ll scream-“

“You wouldn’t-“

Fangs opened his mouth and before any noise could come out, Dante clasped a hand over it, Fangs’ scream muffled.

“Alright you lil shit, what you want?”

Fangs licked his hand and Dante pulled away, wiping it on his brother’s shirt.

“You gotta give me piggybacks all week whenever I say-“

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

Dante narrowed his eyes,“Ok, sure-fine, yeah-now get out-“

“Not until you pinky promise-“

“Fangs-“ his brother held out his pinky, a determined look set on his face. Dante gave him an incredulous look, before sighing, and linking his pinky with his brother’s.

“Pinky promise, now, move.” He picked up fangs and tossed him to his bed. The boy landed on it with an oof.

“Hey!”

“Ya fine, now, go to bed.”

Fangs grumbled, and pulled his cover over himself tightly, facing away from his brother.

Dante’s phone chimed and he picked it up to see Cd with two lit cigs in his mouth, flipping him off.

“Idiot” he mumbled, smirking to himself, before settling in and drifting off to sleep.

Four years ago, Speedy Ortiz leader Sadie Dupuis released a full-length debut, Slugger, under her solo moniker Sad13. Then, back in June, she announced a sophomore outing called Haunted Painting. The latest preview of Haunted Painting is called 'Oops…!' Here’s what Dupuis had to say about it: "We recorded 'Oops…!' at New Monkey, which was Elliott Smith’s studio. This one has a magic drum sound — thanks entirely to engineer Sarah Tudzin (of Illuminati Hotties notoriety), and Zoë Brecher’s impeccable playing. Just before writing it, on tour with CHVRCHES, a venue employee became physically and verbally violent with one of my Speedy Ortiz bandmates. He directed his fake apology at me instead of the person he harmed, presumably because I am smaller and present feminine. My vengeance complex kicked in and I got a scary adrenaline high making sure this unsafe person was removed from the show. While I’m glad I have protective instincts, I wrote the song to process ways in which I’ve used people’s assumptions about me and my body to wield my own version of toxic masculinity. Kimber-Lee Alston, who directed remotely via Zoom, turned this story and song into an allegory about a 1950s prom queen vampire who lures in her bad boy victims with delicious, blood-filled treats." Musically, 'Oops…!' sits between the poppiest ends of Dupuis’ Sad13 songwriting and the more rock-oriented side of her work with Speedy Ortiz. [via Stereogum]

Lola Young has unveiled a powerful new video for latest track ‘Woman’. As Lola explains when opening up the video - “what you’re about to see is woman in all their glory, in all their pain, unapologetic in their self-love and unashamed in this moment of vanity”. Taking striking visuals and combining it with Lola’s standout voice - the results are a must-watch. Speaking about the video, Lola explains: “I wanted to make this video because I believe women are all undeniably strong, sexy, free, brave, vulnerable, raw and powerful and that we do not have to hide away. We do not have to remain unseen, our bodies should never be sexualised or a taboo conversation, or only seen through the male gaze. We have the ability to normalise our bodies being on show, and accept them for their differences, as It’s important to remember those differences are currently often shamed. I pushed for the women in the video being fully nude and the energy on set because of that was insane. I have never felt more empowered in my life. Nipples, bums, rolls, stretch marks, cellulite, all of these things are beautiful along with the ‘perfect’ body. Taking a leap from the Broadway stage to the recording studio is singer-songwriter Sophia Anne Caruso with her debut tune 'Toys'. Teaming up with Empire The Sun’s Nick Littlemore, Sophia’s sweet angelic vocals guide us through this sombre piano melody as she confesses her innermost thoughts and feelings. With raw emotion and a captivating presence, Sophia wanders through ruins of a castle and forest for a stirring cinematic video. The poetic song follows up from the actor’s performance in the Tony-nominated Broadway production of the cult classic Beetlejuice, where she stared as the gothic teenage physic medium Lydia. While she may have conquered the stage with her incandescent performances, the singer is ready to take on the next challenge and we’re excited to see where the next chapter will take her. Tāmaki Makaurau’s Valkyrie are back with a brand new track ‘Good Thing’, their most infectious bop of a track yet (really – try not to dance to this, we dare you), accompanied by a vivacious and decadently alluring video directed by Shae Sterling. The track is written about the sexiness of Jimi Hendrix and Mick Jagger, and is overflowing with good vibes and energy. Speaking of the idea behind ‘Good Thing’, Valkyrie’s front woman Omer Gilroy says, "Imagine being stuck in isolated nature for a week, surrounded by the Beatles, the Stones and Jimi Hendrix... No cell service, just vinyls of the classics and friends. We had a good thing going and what you hear in the song is how we felt while writing it."

Two weeks after Kylie Minogue released her new song 'Say Something,' the singer has paired the single with a sparkling video directed by Sophie Muller. Keeping with the Disco theme of her new album and song’s lyrics, the visual finds Minogue and her dancers grooving to 'Say Something' in front of an interstellar backdrop, with the pop singer sometimes delivering the track from atop a horse statue. “We’re a million miles apart/In a thousand ways,” Minogue sings on the upbeat, introspective track. “Baby you can light up the dark/Like a solar-scape.” [via Rolling Stone]

Los Angeles' DeathbyRomy makes dark, gothic pop with a theatrical edge; the 20-year-old's debut album, 2018's Monsters, is filled with brooding electronic beats as she waxes poetic about her many failed loves, complete with features from Lil B, Yung Bans, and Cuban Doll. DeathbyRomy's most recent single, 'Fiending For A Lover,' though, shows the young artist making a pivot into brighter, more straightforward pop with its upbeat, maximalist production and an intro that feels like a nod to the TikTok famous 'Lalala.' NYLON premiered the song's video, a quarantine-filmed visual that includes a Mean Girls-esque burn book, and the singer dressed to the nines in Harajuku fashion. Lounging in the maximalist pink interiors of her room, the young artist fantasizes about wanting to be tied down again, even if it ends up kind of toxic: "Something in the way you hurt me/ I love it though it's quite unnerving." "This song was inspired by feeling locked up during this quarantine," Romy writes of the song in an email. "An overall sense of lingering mania and being the hopeless romantic I am; I’ve been fantasizing more than ever about my imaginary boyfriend.
