OK!! some notes on episode 9 because I have a LOT to say
WHAT THE FUCK.
Ok first of all, I kinda loved this episode. The character dynamics between everyone was so good! Although I wish we got to see Jean and Storm talk about Madelyne and Nathan, because as far as I know she has no idea. I mean, surely they had to have a conversation about it, because why is there suddenly no baby in the house? But still.
I know we're supposed to be mad at Roberto Right now, but I just can't. It's obvious that he didn't really understand the extent of which going to war on magneto's side would entail. We can see that through the genuine feelings he was showing while fighting Jubilee. He didn't want to fight her, he regretted it the moment he started, but he didn't think that she would fight him back either. Roberto isn't exactly an X-men veteran, so I don't think he fully realized that he was in over his head. And Jubilee? Her heartbreaking "what about me?" FUCK. OH. MY HEART. Roberto really wasn't thinking about the full situation when he sided with Magnus.
The Jean and Cable fight has me heartbroken. Because we know from seeing the fight with Madelyne that sinister is just using Cable’s anger and polarizing it. And the fact that he doesn't see Jean as his mom, but Jean has all the memories from Madelyne? Hell she spoke about how she can remember the pregnancy and I'm sure she still has some feelings about Cable as a son. Also, I really fuckimg hope the ending of that scene doesn't mean she's dead (again) because to be honest I'd be really pissed off.
It was kinda sexy getting to see Cable's powers tho
And the fucking ending??? THE FUCKING ENDING??? FUCK. I really want to know what Rogue was thinking while watching a member of her family literally HAVE HIS BONES REMOVED. Is she still going to choose magneto after this? Is she going to place the blame on Logan for fighting in the first place? Imagine when storm finds out, after she had already expressed her emotions about permanent power loss. UGH.
I need to write some Logan fluff after this this is bulllshit.
-an added note, I kinda feel for the professor in this one. Hell yeah I'm mad at him, but the pain he's been going through kinda hits my heart. The scene where he wakes up, looks to the other side of his bed to find Lillandra obviously not there, and the difference between having the ability to walk and loosing it? :( and he really seems to be going through it emotionally. He was absolutely thinking only about the idealistic life he thought he was leaving his students but in the end he completely fucked it up. Sorry buddy, but maybe do that once the fight has been finished next time.

Meu lado obscuro!

6 Unlettered Pages of a a canceled sketch-y Nightcrawler centered X-men fanfic comic I wanted to do back in 2016.Wouldve been focused on Nightcrawler and Cerise(an ol shiar lover of his) getting back together, cause I used to ship them real hard. With all the stuff that followed in my life and my own original stuff I wanted to pursue I decided that I should atleast share the little I did a few years ago. Granted, visually looks way better with text, but I couldnt find those files, and honestly Im sure I would rewrite it since I did this back in 2016 XD

X-Men Unabridged: 109 (1978)
The X-Men, those plant-loving mutants that have sworn to protect a world that hates and fears them, are a cultural juggernaut with a long, tangled history. We’ve been untangling that history for a while, but sometimes, you really want a more in-depth look. Interested? Then read the (un)Abridged X-Men!
(X-Men 109) - by Chris Claremont and John Byrne
Tumblr media
Ororo not noticing Moira casually drowning Banshee or Wolverine being punted around by some poutine-roided idiot because she’s too busy eating the Piotr-shaped eye candy is such a mood.
I wonder what my ethnic curse would be. Perhaps: ‘By Mata Hari’s bedazled bikini!’
Plot-wise, issue 109 is not that dense. Half the issue deals with the X-Men coming home from their space-adventures, the other half has Wolverine dealing with the Canadian government coming to claim their lost asset. I mean, Claremont uses three pages to tie up some loose Shi’ar ends through flashback because the last issue couldn’t fit it all in. It’s by its very definition a breather issue.
Doesn’t mean it’s not awesome.
WHERE TO START?! Why not with plant mommy Ororo?
Tumblr media
Storm’s secondary mutation has to be that her hair always looks like a fabulous follicular cascade, even during an indoor spring shower.
Look, if I had weather powers, I’d probably be using it for mundane shit like watering my plants and ensuring nice weather at my friend’s weddings too. (Okay, maybe sometimes I’d zap dudes who tell random girls in bars to smile more.)
While Storm talks to plants and takes all her clothes off, Kurt does the other thing I do after a rough day at the office: he calls someone for some nookie.
Tumblr media
I love that Amanda is so extra that she gives out signed photos of herself.
Kurt just looks so fucking cute here. Look at those little fangs! Yeah, Amanda, get it.
Tumblr media
Like a lot of people to whom communication comes as easily as breathing, Piotr is defeated when faced with a blank letter. Look at that trash can: he’s tried this waaaaay too many times.
Anyway, I think “Sorry I haven’t been writing, was busy saving the universe. Weather’s lovely” has a nice ring to it.
Star Wars had been out for around half a year when this comic was published, and it’s safe to say Claremont was a huge fan. You can tell by the direction these comics are taken: the whole Shi’Ar space opera is obliquely inspired by Star Wars and Star Trek and their aesthetics. I mean, Corsair asks to be beamed up and there’s even references to a captain “Spo’ock”.
It was the end of the 70s. Everybody wanted to be a Skywalker: space was big, y’all. Nightcrawler loving the movies is not a coincidence - I wonder if Claremont was also a fan of Errol Flynn.
Anyway, we follow Kurt one more floor down, where he spooks Scott, brooding at the window. The result is an unintentionally hilarious interaction, where Scott and Kurt discuss Real Issues Like Men while Jean comes out to her parents outside.
Tumblr media
“Mom and dad, I’m… the Phoenix.”
“Honey, we figured you might be when you introduced us to Misty Kn… Wait, what?”
To be fair, being possessed by a cosmic force for rebirth is almost the same as being gay: it imbues you with fabulous new insights, you start experimenting with your wardrobe and ever so often, you want to burn down the galaxy because some bitches in a gay club have slighted you.
But all that will come later.
Anyway, Jean’s kinda silly coming out leads to a pretty honest heart-to-heart between Nightcrawler and Cyclops. Scott tries to give Kurt grief because of his happy-go-lucky attitude, and Kurt gives him a deserved put-down.
Tumblr media
Life can be unkind, Scotty, so embrace the kindness provided to you by a wise little devil.
Scott prefers to brood and Kurt is hanging with Amanda, so it’s a foursome - maybe even a double date? Moira and Sean, Piotr and Ororo. Logan asks for a ride - not because he wants to eat cheese and crackers among ants, no, he wants to blow off steam.
Tumblr media
The X-Men’s chicken or egg: did Logan’s sideburns decide the shape of his headpiece, or did the headpiece shape his haircut?
I started reading the X-Men just when the Marvel Universe was starting to reach the height of Wolverine saturation: he was simply everywhere. Like, at some point, he was in X-Force and the Avengers while also being a Headmaster of the Jean Grey school. Add to that him being the face of the Fox X-Men universe… Listen, it was easy to get sick of him. I kind of did.
But this? Original flavor Wolverine, who’s still kinda short, kinda ugly and kinda stuck being a loner? He works as a character. Chris Claremont is beginning to explore his duality: the wild animal who has been experimented on vs. the honorable man who would do anything for his found family. He gives me major Granny Weatherwax vibes: he’s the kind of person who doesn’t need people, but he does need people to know that he doesn’t need people.
So yeah, he's still cool.
Also, his healing factor hasn’t been kicked to superhuman levels yet - you know, being able to regenerate from a single cell or whatever - so he actually feels kind of anxious when he’s about to toss himself off cliffs etc.
Not happy about that red belt, though.
Anyway, Wolverine is out doing the noble hunting-without-killing-thing, and then this motherfucker wrapped in a flag shows up. Look, I know I have something against dudes who brandish their nationality as their superhero identity, but this fool is just… ugh.
Tumblr media
James MacDonald = the worst. Trust me on this.
Major MacMapleleaf then punts Wolverine across the forest, right into the other X-Men’s picnic, and now we’re all caught up.
Out of all the X-Men in this issue, Sean gets the least amount of screen time but, hey, at least I can steal a joke from him.
Tumblr media
Don’t worry, despite the martyr/pièta pose, Moira will turn out just fine!
You weren’t worried?
Anyone?
Look, is there anyone who genuinely likes Moira as a character?
James Hudson, being the worst, doesn’t give a fuck that he just cross-fired an innocent woman - er, innocent as far as he knows, at least - and just nopes out of there, too outnumbered to fight the X-Men.
Yeah, you better run.
He vows to return with Alpha Flight, which… Eh, he’ll at least bring some more interesting characters with him. (Snowbird!) Now that he has sown enough seeds for a future plot to pick up on, Claremont calls it a day. I will also call it a day, after a little fashion watch. Out of all of these character, who has chosen the worst outfit?
Tumblr media
Scott. It’s Scott. Look, I get that those ruby quartz glasses make the world a different color for you, but you’re wearing a mustard suit and a bespeckled yellow shirt underneath. Even when considering Moira’s attitude, it’s still the most stank thing in the doorway.
Sean, just what do you see in her?

Let’s talk about the REAL story (spoilers)
Ramble warning ahead. All recall too because I gave the comics away aaaaages ago.
Okay kids. I am an old lady. Back in my day we didn’t have the cartoon (yet), we had the comics and my parents HATED the fact that I read x-men (due to the way the women were portrayed)
But let’s talk about what those comics were and why the movies make me physically ill. Especially in regards to jean, Phoenix, and dark phoenix. One— Jean is lacking in the movies. More often than not she is just portrayed as the ass that Wolverine wants but can’t have. What was she really— Jean’s power came about from her LITERALLY stopping someone’s soul from passing into the afterlife. That friend that everyone glazes over? Yeah, that soul. AS A CHILD. If I recall correctly. Professor x even admits to the fact (in early issues) that she potentially is more powerful than him as a psychic and telepath, though her telepathy is bound at that point. He knew from day one when he came to help her, AS A CHILD, that she was one of the most powerful minds in the universe. And he wasn’t the only one to notice. There are clear hints that Phoenix, as an entity, saw this struggle to keep her friend, and intervened at the risk of Jean being dragged into the afterlife along with her friend. During her early days with professor x, he purposely bound her powers because she lacked maturity and wisdom. Her wreckless emotional abandon was what nearly killed her, and he recognized that she needed a normal life experience to learn how to cope and use them effectively later on. Not to mention that she was being driven into insanity. She fears her powers to the point of her health deteriorating, and it gets to a point where professor x has to help redirect her to focus on normalcy. The first time she really uses her power without fear is to pull up a psychic hologram of Scott, who she had developed feelings for. (Side note, the whole time her parents have no idea she’s a mutant. They just think she is emotionally disturbed.)
Fast forward to the x-men getting caught up in intergalactic bullshit. Now, the comics were by far more telling than anything else. The movie glazed and the cartoon had to skip over some stuff to meet a rating standard. But literally, when Jean took over the ship to take everyone home there were multiple scenes of how radiation continually hit her and how she was withering away, her hair was falling out, her skin was mottled and dying, her muscles were disintegrating... she literally was being fried to death. It was pretty graphic. Her will to save her friends, and her love for them, and once again her fucking mental strength caught the eye of the Phoenix— now the Phoenix is a literal force. It has no physical form and cannot experience anything on its own. So, in exchange for helping her (and subsequentally making her pretty much immortal) the Phoenix approaches Jean And makes a deal. Power for a chance to be a living, feeling being. On that note, we see something that will come back later— we already know Jean will do anything out of love for her friends, but also, we see that she’s scared to die. And that is important for later, and it completely makes her relatable.
So, they all live and times goes on. Now if you pay attention throughout the ensuing issues, you notice that Jean GRADUALLY becomes more powerful, more ruthless, and more sexual. She goes from being a very demure woman to a very provocative one. So how did it happen? Now I missed this as a kid because it was all subtle (comics were censored a lot so everything had to be implied) when I reread the series after the cartoon in the 90s came out, it clicked more for me. So during a fight with magneto, a huge chunk of the x-men get lost in the savage lands. Only Jean and beast make it back. Thinking everyone dead, professor x goes with lillandra into space and beast runs off to join the... avengers? I think? I am pretty sure. ANYWAY. This leaves Jean all alone, so she goes to Muir island, since Moira was pretty tight with her. Starting from the flight over, Mastermind fucks with her head— and you see this in flashbacks and thoughts from him as the story progresses. He approaches her as a priest on the flight to get her to confide in him, then again approaches her at a beach where he literally ends up sleeping with her (raping, really, since he is manipulating the situation) and then running into her as Jason. This takes place over a good few months, and that is when Emma Frost provides a way for mastermind to infiltrate Jean’s thoughts and start giving her mental illusions of a past life where Jean was married to mastermind and they were in love. And Jean falls for it because emotionally she is starved— Scott is dead to her at this time. Again the cartoon and several remakes forget to include this. Jean herself is beyond loyal, and the only reason she fell for any of it was under the belief that Scott died.
SO, this manipulation goes on for about a year and a half until BAM, the x-men manage to get home and suddenly scott isn’t dead anymore. (Emotionally whiplash. This shift happens a lot.) To speak to her character, Jean inmediately tells him everything. Scott had a bit of a fling too, but they both decide what happened, happened, but that they want to be together. La la laaaa...
For what good it does. ANYWAY. Time goes on and we continue to see an escalation in Jean’s behavior. She gets more aggressive and savage, dresses more provocative. She gets her Mack in with angel in front of everyone (Lol it’s meant to be innocent, but Jean/ Phoenix are also highly aware that warren pursued her when she was younger.) off and on, she has dreams and visions of her and Jason in the 1800s or whenever, where she is deemed the black queen of the hellfire club. Then the M’krann crystal saga goes down. MORE shit goes down in which Scott and the others start to suspect that the hellfire club is part of it (you know, instead of just being a kinky sex club. They should have just stayed in that lane imo)
So, they have this great idea to crash a hellfire party. Unfortunately it’s been YEARS, and mastermind has continued to work on Jean this whole time, so it is no problem for him to manipulate her into turning on her friends and joining them. She literally thinks she is doing it for the love of her life. (Mastermind) really whatn he does is he psychically manipulates her into succumbing to the personality HE has designed for her as the black queen.
At some point Jean and Scott do a fucking Vulcan mind meld thing, and they are in each other’s heads, mmk? This is before they crash the party. So while scott is all kinky bondaged up, he tries to reach her telepathically. Mastermind catches him and psychically kills him. He, as most people do, underestimate Jean. Seeing Scott killed sets her off and she reverts back. Now we see a brutal side to Jean here as she literally psychically drives mastermind into a state of insanity. I am pretty sure she puts white queen into a coma too. Anyway, this is just a taste of what is happening. A fight ensues and they all leave, but on their way out a bunch of shit hits Jean.
1. She realizes she had been fucked with over and over for years.
2. Mastermind literally mentally and physically raped her. Over the course of years.
3. She enjoyed the feeling of turning on her friends and having the adoration of the hellfire club AND tormenting frost and mastermind.
So, Jean also feels guilt for it all, and unable to really cope, she mentally seems to collapse which allows the Phoenix (which is an entity that craves feelings) to rush in and grab all those dark emotions and run with them. Because Jean wouldn’t let Phoenix experience it— she regressed those feelings in herself.
That is how dark Phoenix came about. The cartoon and movies make it all appear to happen over a short course, but the truth of the matter is, she was mentally manipulated and physically assaulted over the course of YEARS by the hellfire club. I recognize that some of this isn’t appropriate for cartoons, and it would be Difficult to show in a movie that’s only a couple hours long. However it does an injustice to Jean’s character because she RESISTED for such a long time because she was strong, and a good person. She didn’t just get her rocks off on power right away and loose her shit. It was trauma after trauma.
ANYWAY, after a huge battle and getting Jean back under control, the fkn Shi’arr (Sp?) pop in to be the galaxy police, eventually Jean goes back to being Phoenix, as a stepping stone to being dark Phoenix again. There was a battle so it wasn’t for anything, literally once again all of her friends were being harmed in effort to protect her. (Even though she killed billions of people by snacking on a star and destroying a solar system buuuuuut...) Jean still had a lot of control, and on the blue side of the moon comes a few realizations
1. This wasn’t who she wanted to be
2. She is tortured by the understanding she killed billions of people (Remember that Jean is a loving and kind person who has a fear of death both for herself and others)
3. She cannot live an immortal life always being in control and being unable to slip at any moment. Literally a prisoner within herself.
It at this point we see more of Jean’s strength. Jean who, from day one has feared death, now accepts that it is the only way to truly protect everyone that she loves. Granted they all try to stop her, but in the end she takes her own life. This puts an end to her being an uncontrollable force, as Phoenix goes back to being an entity without a physical manifestation, and stops the feud between the aliens and the x-men.
This is why each medium and how things are presented is important. With comics being released in (originally) 8 page monthly installments, the reader really got a sense of the time for the story to build up. The pacing was there. With the animation and the movies, it all feels rushed and kind of forced— hence why I personally do not care for them. I have to look at them in a different way, but to me, there is a lot more power in the comics.
Just my two cents. Imma shush now.

UNCANNY X-MEN #104-105 APRIL-JUNE 1977 BY CHRIS CLAREMONT, DAVE COCKRUM, BOB LAYTON AND SAM GRAINGER
SYNOPSIS (FROM MARVEL WIKIA)
The X-Men have been dispatched to Muir Island, off the coast of Scotland which is owned by Moira MacTaggert. After some issues being able to use a reserved hoverboat from it's owner Angus MacWhirter they are on their way. They are going to investigate why Moira's aid, the Multiple Man has been out of contact for a number of days. However, before they can dock on the island their ship is disassembled by a massive magnetic bolt. The group swims ashore and find that the island is surrounded by a giant magnetic forcefield. Before the X-Men can figure out what to do, the ground they are standing on is pulled up into the sky and the are brought closer to Moira's mutant research center and almost are crushed against the wall if not for their quick defensive attack to smash through it.
Tumblr media
As they recover from the crash, the doorway ahead of them smashes open revealing the X-Men's oldest enemy, Magneto the Master of Magnetism. While elsewhere on the complex, the X-Men's blackbird lands and Moira and Cyclops get out of the ship to conduct their own investigation. They find the Multiple Man who is just reviving from being knocked out. He explains how he was attacked by Havok, Polaris and Eric the Red, who immobilized him. While he was in stasis, they went to the room where Magneto has been kept since he was transformed into a small child. Eric the Red would use some alien technology to restore Magneto to his prime and try to enlist him in his cause to destroy the X-Men. Although Magneto would refuse to follow under another he would vow to destroy the X-Men anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Learning that the X-Men's most deadly enemy has escaped, Cyclops rushes off to join his comrades. The next X-Men are not fairing very well against Magneto who uses his magnetic powers to his advantage against both Wolverine's Adamantium claws, and Colossus's metal body. Storms lightning bolts also do not have an effect on him, and Magneto defeats them all easily. He then covers Nightcrawler in debris and seals Banshee in a cocoon of metal particles. Cyclops arrives and manages to stun Magneto with a full power optic blast. With the group unprepared to battle Magneto, Cyclops orders the group to retreat much to Wolverine's chagrin. As they are leaving, Wolverine notes that Dragonfly of the Ani-Men has escape from he cell. As they are fleeing the scene in the Blackbird, Cyclops points out that the recent attacks on the X-Men have have been orchestrated by Erik the Red and that he must be going after Professor X. Wolverine however, is not easily sold on the idea and considers Cyclops a coward. While back on Muir Island, Magneto gloats over his victory over the X-Men and leaves to plot anew, while behind him a door labeled "Mutant X" begins to glow.
In deep space aboard the space ship known as the Starjammer, the space pirate known as Corsair tells his shipmate Ch'Od that nine stars are moving into the correct alignment and that the emperor plans on opening a dimensional gate. The sister of this emperor, the woman that has been haunting Charles Xavier's dreams is rushing toward the Earth hoping to use Charles and the X-Men to stop her brother. Before she can get to Earth's atmosphere however she is attacked by an Imperial cruiser. While on Earth, Jean Grey is reunited with her parents in the company of Charles Xavier and Misty Knight. They are unaware that the reunion is about to be cut short by an attack about to be launched by Erik the Red, Havok and Polaris.
Tumblr media
The X-Men have returned to the United States from Muir Island and have caught Erik the Red lurking in their headquarters. The X-Men attack with their full fury only to be struck from behind by Firelord, the former herald of Galactus. Despite the X-Men's best efforts to defend themselves, they are no match for Firelord who easily knocks them all out. As it turns out, Erik the Red has duped Firelord in helping him, by having Havok and Polaris pretend to attack him earlier to convince the former herald that the X-Men were evil. Under the pretense of being a simple explorer that stumbled upon the X-Men's supposed plot to take over the world, Erik the red has succeeded in tricking Firelord into wishing to seek out and destroy their leader, Charles Xavier.
Meanwhile, high above the Earth, a Shi'Ar Imperial Cruiser piloted by Captain K'rk attempts to blast the ship carrying empress Lillandra. Before they can destroy the craft, Lilandra manages to locate Charles Xavier and teleport to his side on the planets surface. She materializes before the Professor as he is in Jean Grey's apartment with her roommate Misty Knight and her parents. As the Professor goes to her aid and uses his telepathic powers to teach her English, Firelord bursts through the wall to collect her. Jean transforms her clothing into her Phoenix costume and surprises the former herald with her powers. She is able to hold her own against Firelord, surprising everyone witnessing it. Erik the Red soon arrives to also collect Lilandra, however the other X-Men arrive to try and fight him off. As Phoenix blasts Firelord away to the Jersey Meadowlands, the X-Men fail to stop Erik the Red from taking Lilandra.
Tumblr media
He constructs a warp gate, and uses it to escape the scene with Lilandra, and the portal closes right behind him, stopping the X-Men from being able to follow. Jean's parents find it hard to understand what's going on, but Jean tells them that she will explain things later. Unwilling to let Erik the Red leave and potentially destroy the universe Phoenix uses her immense powers to power the warp gate long enough for all the X-Men to travel through, Jean jumping in last. As the portal closes, Professor X, Misty, and the Grey's are left behind to wonder if they will make it back alive. Before they can worry anymore, Firelord arrives and demands to know where the Phoenix had went and threatens to destroy them. Charles tells the cosmic being that she is at the other end of the universe trying to save the universe from destruction.
REVIEW
Almost everything we recognize from the X-Men starts here. Well, technically it started when Jean Grey “died”, but the Starjammers and Lilandra would become an integral part of Claremont run and would make their way into different adaptations. However, there is still traces of the old school X-Men stories here, with battles that I usually cannot bother to care about, and villains that do little to explain plot inconsistencies.
I am mostly talking about Erik The Red, and the fact that Cyclops used to be him at a certain point. They mentioned this fact, but did nothing to explain what happened. And I would find it hard not to explain that Cyclops would impersonate a character linked to the Starjammers and his father, Corsair. Maybe there is some explanation I lost in these issues.
Apart from that, I am not sure if the key is the inker, but Cockrum is starting to look a bit better than usual (too bad that this is his last arc).
Another question, if the Shi’ar are “avians”, why is Lilandra’s ship modeled after a bug?
I give the issues a score of 6.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix công bố dàn diễn viên trụ cột
