“Hullo doggy!”
Noon blinks awake from his nap to look up. Outside the bush he’s curled in, there’s a girl crouched, smiling down at him. Twin braids swing over her shoulders, matching a compass brushing her knees with the angle.
The coyote growls softly, pulling back into the bush. He should have been well hidden; how did she find him?
“Oh, it’s okay doggy! I’m a little lost. Can you help me?”
Well…at least she thinks he’s a dog? Cautious, wary of a trap, Noon backs out of his hiding spot. No need to run right into her arms, just in case. The girl doesn’t make a move toward him, just smiles and waits. He moves a few feet away and sits, curling his tail around him.
“I’m Linkle! I’d ask your name, but I don’t think you can tell me. I’m trying to find my brother in the city, can you help me?”
The…city. The one just over the rise of the dell? Noon sniffs, but there’s no scent of deceit, only cuccos. Well, he can lead her to the top of the hill.
“Oh! Do you know where to go? I’m going to follow you!”
Linkle, Noon decides, is too trusting of strangers. Strange dogs. Wild animals. Still, he leads her up the hill and pauses, nose pointing to the very obvious city across the field.
“Oh!” Linkle joins him at the top of the hill. “Is that where I need to go? How’d I miss it?”
How indeed?
“Thank you, doggy. I’m going to go find my brother!” With a wave, Linkle skips—skips!—in the direction of the town.
Rumbling a growl to no one, Noon retreats to his bush.
10 minutes later, Linkle is back. “So…I think I got turned around, doggy.”
Forget being trusting; she’s an idiot.
