fucking lwn made an article about the cl-lib discussion on the mailing lists lmao.
stallman needs to retire on this front. cl-lib has been in emacs for years at this point and trying to excise it when it's used so often is just dumb
Stallman can go fuck his own corpse

Anyway the post I wanted to reblog was about making a bootable usb with persistence! It's essentially a little computer hosted on the usb, and can be run on almost any laptop/computer with a USB port. Download Windows on that USB, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, anything you want! You could even download multiple OSes if you use a multi boot creator (and you have enough space)!
You can go to pendrivelinux and use the Yumi creator (Your USB Multiboot Installer). There are even guides on there for how to download various OSes, though the basic rules should be the same. Plus, you can always use guides from other sites and other installers!
Personally, I plan to use Mint once I get a new USB (I need a new one for various reasons). I'm going to put Mint Cinnamon version on there (it's the most popular) and try to download it onto my laptop as well. My laptop is slow though so if that doesn't pan out I'll use the XFCE version since it's very light weight and uses little resources!
Here is a guide for installing Mint via Yumi and Here is Mint's guide to verifying the integrity and authenticity of the iso you download.

The main reason to use Firefox and Linux and other free and open source software is that otherwise the big tech monopolies will fuck you as the customer over in search of profits. They will seek to control how you use their products and sell your data. When a company dominates the market, things can only get worse for ordinary people.
Like take Google Chrome for example, which together with its chromium reskins dominate the web browser market. Google makes a lot of money from ads, and consequently the company hates adblockers. They already are planning to move to manifest V3, which will nerf adblockers significantly. The manifest V3 compatible chrome version of Ublock Orgin is a "Lite" version for a reason. Ublock's Github page has an entire page explaining why the addon works best in Firefox.
And Google as we speak are trying to block adblockers from working on Youtube, If you want to continue blocking Youtube ads, and since Youtube ads make the site unuseable you ought to want that, it makes the most sense to not use a browser controlled by Google.
And there is no reason to think things won't get worse. There is for example nothing stopping Google from kicking adblockers off their add-on stores completely. They do regard it as basically piracy if the youtube pop-ups tell us anything, so updating the Chrome extensions terms of service to ban adblocking is a natural step. And so many people seem to think Chrome is the only browser that exists, so they are not going to switch to alternatives, or if they do, they will switch to another chrominum-based browser.
And again, they are fucking chromium itself for adblockers with Manifest V3, so only Firefox remains as a viable alternative. It's the only alternative to letting Google control the internet.
And Microsoft is the same thing. I posted before about their plans to move Windows increasingly into the cloud. This already exists for corporate customers, as Windows 365. And a version for ordinary users is probably not far off. It might not be the only version of Windows for awhile, the lack of solid internet access for a good part of the Earth's population will prevent it. But you'll probably see cheap very low-spec chromebookesque laptops running Windows for sale soon, that gets around Windows 11's obscene system requirements by their Windows being a cloud-based version.
And more and more of Windows will require Internet access or validation for DRM reasons if nothing else. Subscription fees instead of a one-time license are also likely. It will just be Windows moving in the direction Microsoft Office has already gone.
There is nothing preventing this, because again on the desktop/laptop market Windows is effectively a monopoly, or a duopoly with Apple. So there is no competition preventing Microsoft from exercising control over Windows users in the vein of Apple.
For example, Microsoft making Windows a walled garden by only permitting programs to be installed from the Microsoft Store probably isn't far off. This already exists for Win10 and 11, it's called S-mode. There seem to be more and more laptops being sold with Windows S-mode as the default.
Now it's not the only option, and you can turn it off with some tinkering, but there is really nothing stopping Microsoft from making it the only way of using Windows. And customers will probably accept it, because again the main competition is Apple where the walled garden has been the default for decades.
Customers have already accepted all sorts of bad things from Microsoft, because again Windows is a near-monopoly, and Apple and Google are even worse. That’s why there has been no major negative reaction to how Windows has increasingly spies on its users.
Another thing is how the system requirements for Windows seem to grow almost exponentially with each edition, making still perfectly useable computers unable to run the new edition. And Windows 11 is the worst yet. Like it's hard to get the numbers of how many computers running Win10 can't upgrade to Win11, but it's probably the majority of them, at least 55% or maybe even 75%. This has the effect of Windows users abandoning still perfectly useable hardware and buying new computers, creating more e-waste.
For Windows users, the alternative Windows gives them is to buy a new computer or get another operating system, and inertia pushes them towards buying another computer to keep using Windows. This is good for Windows and the hardware manufacturers selling computers with Windows 11 pre-installed, they get to profit off people buying Windows 11 keys and new computers, while the end-users have to pay, as does the environment. It’s planned obsolescence.
And it doesn’t have to be like that. Linux distros prove that you can have a modern operating system that has far lower hardware requirements. Even the most resource taxing Linux distros, like for example Ubuntu running the Gnome desktop, have far more modest system requirements than modern Windows. And you can always install lightweight Linux Distros that often have very low system requirements. One I have used is Antix. The ballooning Windows system requirements comes across as pure bloat on Microsoft’s part.
Now neither Linux or Firefox are perfect. Free and open source software don’t have a lot of the polish that comes with the proprietary products of major corporations. And being in competition with technology monopolies does have its drawbacks. The lacking website compatibility with Firefox and game compatibility with Linux are two obvious examples.
Yet Firefox and Linux have the capacity to grow, to become better. Being open source helps. Even if Firefox falls, developers can create a fork of it. If a Linux distro is not to your taste, there is usually another one. Whereas Windows and Chrome will only get worse as they will continue to abuse their monopolistic powers over the tech market.

@give-to-oblivion replied to your post “yeah my night is going FINEEEEEE”:
That sucks so bad! What is a portal? Is it a different gaming system? (I had to look up what Odin was since I'm stuck with consoles for the most part.)
Yeah so the AYN Odin 2 comes in 3 different configurations.
I had the OG, the Odin 2 Pro.
Tumblr media
(This is the white version, I had the translucent purple.) I bought mind like... 3 or 4 years ago after selling my Switch Lite. It plays everything from retro games up to lightweight Switch games. It's also a dream for Game Pass and such. Battery lasts days. My beloved.
But time has marched on and there's been two updated revisions to the Odin 2.
Tumblr media
First, the Mini. It's just the Odin 2 but a PS Vita. It's got a smaller screen but for the sickos like me who think the Vita is a pinnacle of design. It's a delightful lil guy I'm definitely tempted by, but there's some screen issues with the Mini (for SOME UNITS changing the brightness to specific levels causes weird tinting).
So I'll probably sit and be sad and save up until I can get the Portal.
Tumblr media
The final evolution of the Odin 2. Full gorgeous OLED, some of the best ergonomics, just got the ability to run Linux.
I never intended to go for the upgrade but I sure as fuck am avoiding the Odin 2 Pro. I know logically the bad battery buckle is likely limited to a certain set of early-gen O2Ps but I've just heard way less issues with the Portal than the original run.
But with the tariff fuckery, I'm thinking about just... getting a cheap telescopic controller for my phone and... using that. But I dunno. It's not the same and I honestly don't like having games on my phone. 8\
farewell, sweet odin 2 pro, I will always remember you for our long sessions of 3DS games. my beloved. 😔

15.03.25
I tried out Zorin OS Linux on Distrosea.
https://distrosea.com/
Zorin OS started its development in 2008 by co-founders Artyom and Kyrill Zorin. The company is based in Dublin, Ireland.
Main site:
https://zorin.com/os/
Wiki link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zorin_OS
Like Linux Mint, it is based on Ubuntu, which in turn is based on Debian and uses the current Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS base release.
It features the GNOME 3 and XFCE desktop environments and is available in Lite, Education and Core editions.
Due to enhanced performance optimizations in the Core, Pro, and Education editions of Zorin OS, the Lite version is being discontinued.
However the XFCE desktop packages will still be available through the official software repositories:
https://help.zorin.com/docs/getting-started/getting-zorin-os-lite/
I chose version 17 and selected the 'Core' edition.
This version (Core64) features the GNOME desktop and a few more apps. I clicked 'Try' when the Linux distro booted up to the install wizard. The distro performs a md5 sum check before boot-up to check the security of the .iso file.
The distro can be easily customised to echo Windows or MAC-OS, as well as being tweaked to the users preferred layout.
Software can be installed through Zorin's Software Store. applications are available to install in APT, dpkg, Snap and flatpak.
Windows software can be ran using Wine, a compatibly layer for running Windows only programs on Linux, MAC OS and BSD systems.
Zorin OS 17 also comes with various menu layouts from a Windows Classic/7 layout, Windows 11 style layout, GNOME menu and full screen menus. Some of the menu layouts are only available in the paid for Pro edition.
For more about the various layouts and a review see:
https://www.zdnet.com/article/zorin-os-demonstrates-exactly-what-a-desktop-operating-system-should-be/
The panel (referred to as a taskbar) is also highly configurable in size and appearance and can be changed to match the desktop layouts.
Various window management set-ups are featured for tiling windows to the sides of the screen.
I like the operating system as it is both familiar to me as a Windows user, but also is very configurable, features a polished user interface and is easy to navigate. Also Zorin comes with some very striking desktop backgrounds and colours!
However, I couldn't get the VM to connect to the internet, so I couldn't browse Firefox or try out any additional software.
This is just the way that it has been set-up on Distrosea. For test purposes though, it works very well.
It also feels very speedy, even in a virtual machine over the host internet!

What Alexandra Ledermann games have you played? I had "L'Héritage du Haras" as a young and it's my favorite to this day. Not so crazy about the next entries, I never understood the whole schedule thing (HOMEWORK? IN MY HORSE GAME???). Did you know they made novels too? I had the first one and the plot was fucking wild.
ALEXANDRA LEDERMANN SWEEP‼️
I had 3 of the 4 entries on DS (not 3DS, i had actually gotten an DSi to replace my DS lite like 6 months before the 3DS came out, kinda fml)
I had (and still do most of them, but some are missing, which saddens me)
Alexandra Ledermann 2 : Mon aventure au haras (which I was never able to fucking finish because i think some competitions are only available if you pair the game with some other nintendo game and for years it was my only game ever + even after that i didn't want That Game in particular so stuck I was)(also i remember the dressage competitions being so fucked up because the shape recognition system was dogshit, and i actually only ever learned what i was actually supposed to do at age like 15 when after years of not touching the game i looked up soluces. kinda so funny. anyways)
Alexandra Ledermann : Le Mystère des chevaux sauvages (this one's nice. i have extremely vague memory of the horse-seller dude(?) pissing me off for no reason, i wonder if it's because they tried to put a romance between him and the player female character, which at age like 10 i already couldn't stand)
Alexandra Ledermann : Aventures au camp d'été which i also remember quite liking, there were portions of the game you could go on trail rides in mines and on snowy mountains and shit pretty neat)
I also have Alexandra Ledermann 7 (Le défi de l'étrier d'or) and 8 (les secrets du haras) as PC games which i was never able to play because they need windows & we were a linux-only household (still are on most our machines). i mostly got those with like horse magazines i was having my mother buy. like they came with those. presents with the magazines. do you rember.
i knew they had novels but i have/had none myself, however i did have A Number of Grand Galop novels. I also have one (1) Heartland but I remember being quite bored because not enough horses in this one. had a pretty sturdy one-track mind as you might have noticed.
