Would You Fuck This Furry?
Sadly she was beat out in favor of the penguin, but this fox was almost the mascot of Linux! Originally conceived as a male character by her creator, her design was later found and revised as a female fox by Twitter user cathodegaytube, and this new interpretation (and name) was embraced by the creator! SO! Trans woman fox computer nerd babyyy

There is no nuance button, if your answer is some variation of ‘I would if X’ then the answer is yes.
#polls#poll blog#xenia the fox#linux#artwork#credit to Alan Mackey for the left image#while the right is by cathodegaytube#though their Twitter seems to be mostly hidden from view now#furryblr#furry fandom

On a semi related note the more I am subjected to Microsoft products the more I become convinced that the reason so many people these days believe themselves to be “bad with computers” is that the programs they are forced to use in their professional life are utterly incomprehensible to ANY rational human being and they are (rightfully enough) extrapolating out that this is just how computers are. They aren't!!! In their quest to remove all the “scary” details from their poor fragile end users Microsoft have created an ecosystem that behaves completely erratically and unpredictably and is by definition unknowable. Things just happen. Then they stop happening. Nothing ever announces why or how. Just a thousand vague and useless popups that may or may not be there tomorrow. I PROMISE computers are actually extremely simple and logical beasts.
#brain.txt#the biggest barrier to widespread linux adoption is the fear of learning something new and i get it i really do#when youre at zero knowledge and dont even know where to begin its completely overwhelming and so much easier to stick with what you know#but the problem is no one ever really knows windows#youre sharing your room with a wild animal#you believe you know its mannerisms well enough to know when it is hungry and what it likes and dislikes but one day it might lash out#and there will be no way of ever knowing why#with open source software the only barrier to knowledge is how far you want your own curiosity to carry you at present#and yeah! ill readily admit!! theres plenty of components of my system i dont know too much about right now#but i feel inherently less lost and helpless knowing that the information is out there and i am actually capable of reading it#instead of someone actively obfuscating all possible attempts at understanding and also constantly changing everything from under me#(i have never owned a mac in my life so idk whats going on over there but my general impression seems to be that mac at least gets the whole#walled garden thing right in the sense that it is a cohesive and functional experience despite being extremely locked in. which i have more#respect for as a solution i am not interested in but i can see the appeal of rather than the FUCKING DISASTER microsoft has unleashed)

Woo got Linux working! On a related note I have gotten over any fear of breaking things through the command line and also can now roll back to an earlier system backup. Yes those are related. In my defense, breaking things in interesting ways is a great way to figure out what's actually going wrong.
#Had issues getting my trackpad to work and went through All The Drivers#thank you that one redditter who went through this same thing six months ago and figured out that installing a previous kernel fixed it#Official documents out random redditter in#RIP Windows 11 I shall not miss the 4 times you managed to force updates in the two non-consecutive hours I used you#Nor how each update progressively added more unwanted ad junk and invasive features#Save me Linux-Wan you're my only hope#The Cinnamon desktop seems adorable I'm looking forward to playing with its features tomorrow#Wow it's been awhile since a new OS has been exciting#Instead of Oh What Fresh Hell Is This

so far, the only thing i dislike about linux/fedora is the "middle-click is pasting" thing, which if i understand correctly is a "liked feature" since forever and therefore difficult to change.
as a person who uses middle-click for scrolling, i hate it 🙃
#latmos linux chronicles#also people almost get defensive over it when others ask about disabling it#scrolling with middle click just seems natural#like its the same button you use to move up and down#and ctrl+v is easy enough

Think I might fuck around and put Linux on this laptop. I’m annoyed enough at the new version of windows to finally make a change and I’ve always wanted to try that out and see what it was about.
Any mutuals into that sort of thing that have any words of wisdom?
#this is on a 256GB T480 w/ an i7#probably start with Mint bc it seems beginner friendly but I’m decently computer knowledgeable#like.. command prompts aren’t scary to me#wherein I continue to be the epitome of ‘not trans but I believe in their beliefs’#thinkpad#linux

do i just not know where to look or are there really very few default replacements for sims 3
#why can i not find any maxis match hair replacements#what about clothes#sims 3 is THE game that would benefit from default replacements the most bc a lot of the EA stuff is seriously hideous#i have found more realistic hair replacements but that's not really what I'm looking for#also sims 3 on linux also seems to work a little smoother than on windows#ts3#sims 3

I thought mint was supposed to work out of the box :/
Also why is everyone's solution to fix wifi not working to run a command to download a program. There Is A Fundament Obstical To This Plan
#Pire.txt#It's also possible I fucked something up in the install process#Tomorrow or whenever I'll try completely wiping the system and starting over?#I skipped drivers installation which I thought I could do after os#But everyone also seems to agree that 'Linux doesn't really use drivers'#And therefore no one wants to explain how to install the ones I have sitting in the desktop folder#So maybe that needs to be done to the bios first#Linux has to use drivers there's a drivers manager tool that comes preinstalled#But- and you won't believe this-#It needs an internet connection to be utilized properly

While I am by no means an expert in Linux distros (distributions) might I recommend two widely supported and user-friendly ones?
Linux distributions are basically packets of software that envelop the Linux kernel that determine the look, feel and function of the operating system. While there is a multitude of flavours, Debian-based systems such as Ubuntu and Mint are widely supported and have huge communities while being user friendly (i.e. keep the command line usage low/ explained). I managed to squeeze so much processing power out of my old laptop just by switching from Windows 10 to Linux Mint (very lightweight, has a graphic interface very similar to Windows). If you don't have to worry about every every Byte of RAM tho, I'd say Ubuntu is a very good start
Hope this helps <3
Thank you! I'm currently deciding between Mint with the Cinnamon desktop or Fedora with either KDE or Cinnamon. Going to try live USBs to test them out.
For others considering the switch: Mint is the most commonly recommended "easy and stable for new Linux users" version. Fedora is "stable but you're going to need to Google how to do more things until you're used to it." Cinnamon desktop is "things look like Windows", KDE is "not trying to be Windows but similarly intuitive, and you can customize everything", and the third common desktop is GNOME which is "doing it's own thing but looks like Mac, with lots of tiled apps".
Note that these are one-day-of-research impressions. I'll probably try GNOME too, but it looks instinctively ugly to me when I search up images of it.
Most common versions seem to have the option to try them before switching your computer over, so that's my next step.
#Linux newb#Switch in progress#I have also started digging into philosophies and tentatively like Fedora more than Ubuntu#Though the Mint team also seems chill

im watching the last episode of the it crowd, LINUX MENTION

#the it crowd#linux#tech#YIPPIEEEE#now im wondering who uses ubuntu...#well for a start almost certainly not jen; i dont think shed care to change her os unless one of the others convinced her and did it for he#i was thinking moss could be a linux user for a while; but in tramps like us when he regains his memory the windows startup plays#so i have to assume hes a windows user. unless he got really into ubuntu between s3 ep3 and the finale#maybe roy then!! he seemed to have concerns with privacy and advertising in friendface#(even if he did throw that all out the window when he was told he could use the site to chat with girls smh my head)#and this was after windows 8 was released but before windows 8.1; and people DESPISED win8#so i could definitely believe that roy switched to ubuntu after the shitshow that was win8#anyways autism go brrrr
