Shelly
Lisa Foiles has been mermaid posting lately and this sketch suddenly turned into her. It is also nice little way to see how much my art has changed since 2017 (holy moley).

I started and finished Quiet on Set in one sitting this evening. There’s obviously a lot to unpack from this docu-series and it would take a significant amount of time to run through every single thing that stood out to me in all the wrong ways, so I just want to quickly say this: there was an abundance of red flags with all these adults who were trusted with young children, and it truly blows my mind that 1) Nickelodeon as a network approved it and 2) almost none of the parents of these child stars spoke out about it. The ones who did were either alienated from their child or their child was fired. I can’t remember who it was who said something along the lines of “if you’re an adult who’s going to employ children, it’s your responsibility to ensure that you create an environment where they feel safe expressing they’re not comfortable with something,” but she hit the nail on the head with that one. In the 20 year time span this docu-series covered, none of these child stars felt comfortable expressing any discomfort they felt in their tenure with Nickelodeon. Jennette McCurdy’s book still haunts me to this day, and it pains me to say that she barely scratched the surface.
It’s disappointing to learn that so many disgusting things were going on behind the scenes of so many shows I adored as a child/tween, and I hope every single one of these child stars know how much support they have and are able to heal.
Dan Schneider, Jason Handy, Brian Peck, Ezel Channel, Robin Bell, and whoever else was behind these child stars being abused and exploited — you should all feel ashamed of yourselves and I genuinely hope you all know no peace for the rest of your lives.

The Master of Disguise (2002)
In today's review, I find it pretty easy to get into character, as I attempt a #positive review of the 2002 family-friendly feature film, The Master of Disguise #DanaCarvey BrentSpiner #JenniferEsposito #HaroldGould #JamesBrolin #EdieMcClurg
To be an actor, you have to embody many characters, take on their looks, mannerisms, and even the way that they speak and channel that into the performance, you must study your character down to the letter. Some people can find this skill as natural as breathing, and when you can watch. In 2002, a comedian took that artistry to combat a plot of epic proportions in The Master of Disguise. The…

Only lesbians (and Brian) are properly adapted to fighting giant monsters. Aisha and Alec have to stay home and prepare miracle cures in case any of them come back mostly dead.

People keep talking about the axe as a symbol of power but what about the victims and Creature healing as symbols of power?
What about the fact that the first murder is of the person with the most power to destroy Lisa's life and what's used isn't an axe?
It's a sewing machine, a symbol of the work Lisa does that Janet discredits, of the person Lisa is that Janet despises, of the solution to the problem of the Creature needing new parts.
The axe doesn't come into play until Lisa decides to take it up to kill another person who felt they had control over her when she was vulnerable. Yes the Creature kills Doug, but Lisa picked him out, Lisa brought Doug to the Creature, Lisa even starts the encounter by telling Doug to touch her like he did at the party so Creature can kill him before he can touch her. Which is definitely a romance fantasy, but it's also, very importantly, a revenge fantasy. And in that revenge Creature becomes one step closer to whole.
AND THEN you see, this is why Micheal must die. It's not actually because he chose Taffy over Lisa, it's what that choice represents, it's why we have to have the "cool stuff" moment. Because this is the revenge fantasy of being told to turn into something else, know less, be less, be less be less belessbeless and getting to tell that person to fuck off, it's why it has to be Michael's dick. Because he represents another type of power people want over you in girlhood, the power to be knowledgeable and interesting to you without needing to put much thought into you being knowledgeable and interesting all while they get something out of you.
Which is also, why Taffy can't die, because as we see at the end, Taffy, for better or worse, is a person who never once threatened Lisa (because even in Micheal's bed, he saw her as a symbol, Lisa saw her as her sister).
Yes Creature is a romance fantasy, a representation of the desire to be loved, a representation of the desire to be understood. But I think the thing that really ties this all back to what the murders represent is that Creature, also represents Lisa.
He represents a true self, and he's horrifying to start, Lisa runs from him, but then she realizes he's not going to hurt her and she opens up, she even wonders why she's talking so much to someone she doesn't know. The Creature becoming more alive happens parallel to her becoming more alive, as those who've had control over her fall away in the wake of her healing (through murder), until he's more alive than she is and he has to care for her the same way she cared for him, like how you have to care for the helpless and hurt person you were even when you're not them anymore.

Exquisite esquites
By Mia Leimkuhler
If I were mayor of Picnictown, every picnic would have the following: a blanket, a 1:1 dog-to-human ratio and esquites. The blanket’s there because grass is itchy no matter what the most outdoorsy person in the group says; the dogs because dogs are great. The esquites are essential because my favorite outdoor corn is elotes, but they don’t travel nearly as well as esquites. (The laws of Picnictown consider how easy it is to carry your picnic things on public transportation.)
This is barely a compromise, though, because Kay Chun’s esquites capture all the beloved and balanced elements of elotes: sweet summer corn, tangy lime, creamy cotija (and crema), spicy ancho chile. The smoky flavor you get from grilled corn is here, too, as the kernels are charred in a hot skillet until browned and caramelized. Perhaps the most enticing part of the recipe is this note from Kay: “Leftovers transform quickly into a great pasta salad the next day; simply toss with cooked pasta and olive oil.” Picnictown loves a resourceful pasta salad.
More picnic decrees, because it’s the first day of summer! Make Zainab Shah’s sheet-pan chicken tikka thighs ahead of time, and then toss some roti or naan in your tote bag for effortless but extremely delicious sandwiches. Ali Slagle’s green bean salad with dill pickles and feta is perfect all by itself, but if someone else wanted to bring a container of cooked barley or farro, that would be a really nice collaborative grain bowl picnic moment. (For even more lovely, easy picnic ideas that travel well, check out this recipe collection.)
Every June, the summer produce flows into and overwhelms my corner grocery store, and every June I am positively giddy about it. Right now the shelves are buckling from so many cherry tomatoes, and I’m doing my part with salad e-shirazi, basil and tomato fried rice and salmon and tomatoes in foil, a five-star, five-ingredient dinner from Mark Bittman.
I am trying to be more adventurous with my vegetables, branching out and bringing home goodies I don’t usually cook. I’ve never really loved bitter melon (I’m not alone), but I do like bitter things — extra dark chocolate, dandelion greens, Campari. So I’m going to try this stir-fried bitter melon with eggs, a recipe from Chutatip Suntaranon (known as Nok) adapted by Cathy Erway.
The creamy scrambled eggs, salty soy sauce and molasses-y brown sugar will mellow out the harshest edges of the bitter melon. And I trust Nok — I’ve had the pleasure of dining at Kalaya, Nok’s restaurant in Philadelphia, and Nok never misses.
Lastly: It’s hot out there, and I’d like to give you an excuse to stand in front of the open refrigerator after a long afternoon in Picnictown. Here’s Lisa Donovan’s new recipe for buttermilk tres leches cake, which is best served extremely chilled, straight from the pan. I interpret this as spooning giant mouthfuls of cold, creamy cake into my mouth while bending into the fridge, but if you’d like to use plates and forks and a table, by all means.
