do you think dean was actually in love with lisa?

I think Dean is a character with a huge heart and a lot of love to give. I think he's someone who generally falls in love fast (Cassie and Cas) and can be quite intense about his love and devotion. I think at his core he wants a stable home, a family, and a partner that stays. I think when he's in a relationship with someone he is faithful and committed.

As for Lisa? While I have my personal issues with the relationship --mainly how she and Ben were shoehorned in / used as a plot device--and do not "ship" it (as in invest time and interest in the relationship, think about them extensively, or want / see them as "endgame") I do acknowledge that it's an important relationship in Dean's history. And I do think Dean cared for her a lot, saw a life together with her, and that his complicated feelings during that time were mainly centered around his grief over Sam and knowing his brother was not just "dead" but literally being tortured for eternity with the devil. I also think having Cas up and leave also affected him during this time.

As per my personal interpretation of the Destiel timeline I think that Dean pretty much knew he was attracted to / had feelings for Cas pretty early on. However he doesn't really put the label of "love" to those feelings til after the s6 betrayal. It's why his grief is so intense in s7 IMO. He's realizing, all too late, that he's been deeply in love with Cas and now Cas is (seemingly) dead and they left off on a bad note.

I don't think Dean was like, bitterly wishing he was with Cas instead of Lisa during this time or anything. I think he was dealing with feeling abandoned by a friend, who he also had feelings for, but basically had come to the conclusion (after shooting his shot multiple times throughout s4 and s5) that it just wasn't going to happen with Cas.

So, I think Dean was dealing with a lot of grief when he was with Lisa, so he doesn't look so happy there, but I don't think his misery is because he secretly hates her or is failing at "heterosexual romance." To me, Dean is bi. He does love women and has meaningful relationships with them. I personally think he leans more toward a kinsey 5, but I think the few women he's been in relationships with meant a lot to him.

Anyways, all this to say, I think Lisa was important to him and he cared about her a lot. I think diminishing this relationship as meaningless does a huge disservice to Dean. Do I think she was the Great Love Of His Life? As a pretty hardcore destiel shipper: No, I don't. Do I think he probably felt love for her / would've gotten there (saying "I love you") given more time and stability (aka not getting pulled back into hunting): Yes.

It was the voice that captured attention first. Lisa's sharp gaze was quick to pull from her current task. Smile beamed.

Life had been lonely. Far lonelier than it had ever been before. She'd left the compounds in search of her daughters. They'd "flown the coop" after a fight with her no account ex husband. It had been Lisa that had slipped out in the middle of the night with only a few things packed up, the clothes on her back, and no fucking sense of direction or idea on how to survive in the outside world, not Charles.

She'd been out here a year. She'd traded anything and everything ( and there was truth to the term everything ) for even the faintest hint as to where her girls may be, but she'd found herself stuck here. Recovering after a near deadly bout of pneumonia. She'd only had the movie for company, for an escape from the silence and it had been that voice that she fell asleep to nightly.

Alright so first of all, to make things clear-

Don't apologize for sending asks to me, I get them and my immediate reaction is 'Holy shit, people remembered I exist?!' before rushing to check what they said. I adore asks, they make me feel as important as like the Pikachu fucker we all vaguely worship or like any artist ever.

Now onto the actual question.

Lisa at her core is a very very moral person. She wants to help people. Her morals are one of the most important things to her SECOND to her family.

With that in mind, I want you to look me in my eyes and tell me that she'd be alright letting her husband commit a genocide, that she'd be alright with letting him do something her son would hate more than anything in the name of 'revenge' for him.

So Lisa is on the side of trying to stop her husband, less in the name of protecting people and more in the name of refusing to let her son's name be used to do horrid things. I want to ask you what's the best way for her to do that?

Is it to secretly work against him from the inside? Maybe but Lisa doesn't have the HEART for that kind of long term betrayal, she still does love her husband.

Is it to try and get through to him? Well, she does try, but it doesn't work.

What about working with an enemy that isn't literally just the fuckers who killed her son? Now she's getting somewhere.

So yeah! That's why she's with Trevor and Sypha, the same reason canon! alucard was.

Her traveling with Trevor and Sypha primarily just makes her lone to both hone her skills as a healer and help create concoctions that could hurt her husbanding, using weaknesses that she'd long known about from 20 years of marriage.

Can you tell us more about Giulietta? Would love to hear about involvement with the mob, and her ill-fated relationship with Harold... And about Claryce's relationship with her. I imagine there's a lot of baggage there.

Of course! And yeah there's definitely a lot of baggage, might as well call it a cargo!

Giulietta is Fat Tony's older sister (by 5 years of difference) and the previous leader of the Mob - later on nicknamed "La Mama" for the way she often spoke of her daughter.

(Fun fact: the necklace she wears here is a locket necklace with a picture of baby Claryce!)

Giulietta's past

She wasn't meant to lead the Mob at first, as the legacy was meant to be given to her little brother when he would be old enough. She didn't mind, in all her honesty. Her dream was to open her own Italian restaurant, as she loved cooking! But her parents' sudden passing when she was 15 (in a gang-related attack that she sadly witnessed) changed all the plans, and she took over- both to protect her brother, who she felt was too young to carry such responsibilities, and as a personal decision, as she swore to avenge her parents' death. Which she did. And she didn't stop there. And to everyone's surprise, she became an even fiercer leader than her own father was, not hesitating to resort to torture or murder when things didn't go her way. Her catchphrase for such occasions (and, ironically, more mundane ones) is "Now listen, darling..." (which could be interchanged later with "Now listen to mama...").

Giulietta and Harold

She had a few husbands; at best, she'd break up with them, at worst, she was a Black Widow. Harold Whitman was probably about to meet the same fate, except that... Giulietta got pregnant. And if she knew one thing from her own parents' loss, it's that she refused to leave her baby without a father (and, if you asked her, Harold wasn't too bad; she used to like his brutal honesty and his overwhelming confidence). However, if you asked Harold... it was a bet that didn't turn his way. He only stood because 1) he didn't want to be a dead man 2) it was the opportunity to have a son to raise for his legacy, as other women tended to ditch him - no wonder why). Fast forward to present time - Giulietta was too busy to properly take care of her daughter, and Harold didn't get a son. No one was happy about this! Surely this won't have any emotional impact on their child, right? Yeah, no, you know what this did to Claryce already.

Leaving the Mob

Giulietta didn't mean to stay this long as a leader. But her childhood trauma, as well as the determination she earned as the years went on made her less likely to hand over the title (even if she did share it with Tony, with who she often worked as a team) but the most important decisions were left to her. ...Until the day she received her daughter's distressed call. This felt like a waking-up call. She dropped everything to move back to Texas. Both to keep an eye on Harold, and to emotionally and financially support Claryce as she recovered from her burn out so she could start over her studies to find a new career. Frankly, she will never forgive herself for letting down her daughter - she was convinced she would be safer with Harold than with her and the Mafia's ordeals - and to this day she still has trouble letting Claryce stand on her own feet. This is why a few months after Claryce had moved back to Springfield, she divorced Harold and returned to live with her brother.

Giulietta and Chiara (Claryce)

While Claryce is happy her mother cut ties with her father, she still wishes she wasn't so overwhelming with her love and also accepted her as the person she grew up to be rather than pushing her to become her own idealised daughter. No, she won't pursue her mother's dream to own a restaurant (she's an awful cook). No, she won't give her grandchildren (she can't have kids). And no, her favorite color is NOT purple like hers, as she claimed to Fat Tony when he asked her what color to paint the walls of Claryce's flat. The sad truth is that Giulietta knows little to nothing about Claryce - what she really likes, her dreams, her ideals... And the reverse is just as true, except Claryce refuses to acknowledge the lives her mother (and her uncle) had taken away for their own affairs. And yet, slowly but surely, they'll learn to understand each other a little better as time goes on. Even if Claryce (and her loved ones) still think her mother is nosy.

Ironically, as opposed to her past, Giulietta would be your local Italian-American grandma who loves gossiping, putting her nose where she shouldn't, and making sure no one passes hunger (Claryce especially loves her carbonara pasta, although Giulietta is mostly known for making the best lasagna of the city).

Sometimes her bossy temper resurfaces, but nothing that would lead to her awful past ways. Speaking of it, if you asked her, you'd be stuck listening to hours of her old stories - tales of love, tales of crimes, or just saying how much she loves her daughter... But hey, you'd get to have a free meal, so here's that.

Oh, also. She has a rivalry with Luigi, who constantly tries to learn her secrets - while she's upset a guy who's not Italian gets to live her childhood dream.

Isn't she a criminal still, though...?

She is! She'll still have a say sometimes when Fat Tony needs a piece of advice, but she'll never get herself involved in the Mob's affairs. Unless she happens to be there - and she'd be able to defend herself just fine (she always keeps her trusted gun under her skirt). As to why she's not in prison or hunted by the police, well....... I'm still not too sure about that. Perhaps she faked her death before moving to Texas, or something of the likes. I still need to think about it. But the idea of an old Mob leader running free while guys like Snake or Bob get arrested does sound fitting for the humor of the show.

Do you have any character analysis on lisa armstrong? I think theyre neat

ahh i have plenty inside of my mind but i dont think a lot of that has made it to tumblr, a lot of it is my own feelings about her mixed with things ive seen other people say, it's a little hard to say what was lisa really like given the limited amount of scenes with her that we got in which we've seen her acting manipulative out of desperation (that one ending with bernard) but also bottling up her own sadness and clinging onto the few good things in her life (that conversation between her and brad in the definitive edition, lisa keeping her mother's necklace etc) plus all the stuff we can see in the first in which shows lisa's terrible and mixed feelings over the situation she was put through, i think she would have it hard to completely sort them out as that is stuff that most of the time you understand better only after youre out of those circumstances. i also feel that some bits of the first are there for people to resonate with in their own way, which i think is a good thing

personality wise i always saw her as being in similar terms to brad in the sense that they couldve been sweeter people had their surroundings not shaped them to a strong extent. i tend to see her as someone who is sweet and playful but also very erratic and not in control of her own emotions, also not in touch with whats considered normal by others around her, so i think she would accidentally cross boundaries or hurt other people's feelings, all the while being more vulnerable herself than she'd admit. she's a bit of a troublemaker to me and i think she would find it hilarious to make other people uncomfortable (like randomly bringing up traumatic experiences or even joking about them like that one "i'm hanging in there" dialogue of hers 😭) but would feel guilty about it immediately after, she has severe mood swings!! also i realized that in my mind she tends to appear as partially nonverbal?? being more of an observer that speaks mostly if she deems it necessary lol. i think that's a me thing

i think all the while she is someone that deeply desires some peace, this is what she looks up to the most and why some of her interests revolve around mundane and not too exciting stuff (gardening, tea parties) she wishes to feel at ease and not having to be on a state of alert all the time

a thought that i share with a friend is the possibility of lisa not really being suicidal, as a strong part of her character revolves around wanting to escape her torment, both physically and mentally, and that she took the decision to end her life at the sight that nothing was changing, after trying everything she could think of. we see her being able to make friends like bernard, being interested in learning karate like brad (an opportunity that was denied to her), holding onto the memory of her mother who she presumably found help in until she could barely remember her anymore, and even taking the decision to make berny mutilate her to force marty to leave her alone. she tried! she tried to live and really wanted to but ultimately nothing worked her way and she did not find purpose in continuing to endure the same torture everyday, that's how I see it at least

another important trait i find in her is abandonement, things like brad leaving the house without her, her mother dying/leaving (i'm still unsure of which it was? but to me it made sense that mama armstrong died when she was little), her grandfather not wanting to take her in because he didn't want to train a girl, and the whole dilemma around marty. (not to mention nobody in her neighborhood doing anything for her and brad but that's more of an extra complaint i think about sometimes lol many such cases) the feeling of being left to deal with abusive circumstances completely on your own, without even being able of understanding why is any of this even happening and if you could've done something to provoke it, which to the player it is very obvious none of this was lisa's fault but in her own mind it's really possible the thought could've crossed her mind that it was her fault somehow (the religious trauma implications in the first do not help). i should note here the very important fact that lisa has zero clue why was marty the way he was and that when she had the chance to do something to escape him, she decided it was her responsibility to be the one to get hurt in order for the abuse to stop. she's just a child left to process all this stuff on her own and she thinks it was her appearance that lured marty in somehow, because to her what else could it be? at that point she was considering anything.

i think this is why berny was such an important presence in her life, who she saw as a friend and romantic interest but also as an opportunity. someone to rely on in the way she couldn't trust anybody else. and there's a lot of criticism in regards to how her actions affected bernard or why would she tell him to harm a little animal as practice but i always assumed she was sort of desensitized/apathetic and didn't realize bernard would also become scarred by the experience, he was not the one getting cut! is what i think she thought. and the assumption that she harmed animals for fun is just a straight up lie lol

i have a lot to say that's more headcanon territory bc it's little things that i analyze from the first; for example what i interpret as her having complicated feelings about marty, as hinted by the song names, a detail i really like, or those nice marty npcs which i've seen people describe differently; as either, a time where marty used to be nicer (which brad would've been the only one to know of) lisa wishing that she had a normal, caring dad, or marty possibly playing it nice to lure lisa in and take advantage of her, terrifying but possible. this mixed with all those other horrifying deformed depictions of marty all around, which signal towards his image becoming ruined to her, and all the objects such as fridges or beds covered in filth showing that marty's abuse haunts her in every corner of the house, she cant even walk around her own house peacefully. the constant mention of religion is important too because to me that could be lisa noticing the hypocrisy in marty being devoted to a god while being a terrible person himself.

something i think about a lot is how brad and lisa reffer to marty differently; when encountering marty again in painful he reffers to marty as "dad" and we know he doesn't like to be called that by dustin or buddy, clearly tying the world to marty. in the first, there's a vhs tape simply named "marty" in contrast to mrs armstrong vhs being actually named "mom". i think brad sees it as, he doesn't try to take the role of father away from marty, he forces it onto him to signal that it was his job to take care of him and lisa yet he forever failed him as a dad, while lisa takes that title away from him, in a "you're not my dad, never were" type of way

there's another theme that shows up briefly but it's the topic of being grateful, saw someone interpret that royal world as marty manipulating lisa with "everything he does for her" "i put a roof on your head and food on your plate and this is how you treat me" etc etc an abusive parent classic, also the "You think my struggle is funny?" dialogue that comes off as guilt tripping, that and the religious symbolism makes me wonder if she has conflicted feelings over being thankful

things like tricky rick's origin as a personification of the abuse lisa endures feels to me like her reaction as a lonely child (i have the hc that she created him on purpose to help herself describe what was happening to her) and the fact that she only ever physically harms tricky rick but not marty, is rather always running away from him and complying to his demands, maybe hinting that she wishes she didn't have reasons to hurt him or that she doesn't feel capable of doing it in contrast to how much power marty has over her. (i keep wondering if the finger you find in lisa the first could be marty's or hers,,)

i think a lot of the first makes this emphasis on the fact that lisa is a kid forced to grow up too soon, so you see all these terrifying signs of abuse interpreted through her child lenses. i think so much of the white flowers and how they posses this symbolism of "purity" showing these little remaining bits of lisa's innocence, or her inner desire to be pure. i could talk about everything i find in lisa the first but it's a lot 😭 but i think these are the things that come to mind more

some of the stuff in the first can feel a little conflicting/contradictory but i think that makes sense for the type of torment lisa is enduring that makes her go through every thought and every emotion. though of course, this was made before lisa was turned into an actual character, but i still like to tie the stuff from the first to her. during the old versions of painful and joyful lisa appears as more of a haunting memory of a person that brad and buzzo failed, and then in the definitive edition there's these small bits where she is rather being missed for being herself and not just out of guilt, the DE has its flaws but i really liked the lisa stuff! (minus the ohh lisa is controlling my mind bit with buzzo but we don't talk abt that)

i think overall lisa is a character that every player interprets differently and that's part of her charm as a character that was made as a tribute to a real person, i like how helpful she is to victims and i wouldn't think of my interpretation to be the correct one but i'm happy with how i see her
