you were getting ready to go out on a date with jude while he was laying on your bed waiting for you. his phone was charging somewhere in the living room so you gave him yours to play a game so he doesn’t get bored. you were putting on your makeup while singing along to your playlist while he was building some villages or whatever it was that they do on clash royale. however, jude got distracted when an instagram dm pop up at the top of your phone, it was from this formula 1 driver that he knew was always liking your pictures, he didn’t knew he was dming you as well. he thought about opening the message, but he didn’t want to invade your privacy like that, so he simply looked at you.

“someone dm you.” he says.

his voice took you out of your little world and you place your gaze on him thought the mirror you were applying your makeup on.

“who?”

“lando norris.” he reads the name like he didn’t knew already.

“what does it say?” you hide a laugh and continue with your makeup routine.

jude opens the message and reads it out loud. it was obvious he was hitting on you by replying to a story you had posted earlier that day when you went to brunch with your friends and you felt cute.

“are you gonna answer?” he asks again, hints of jealousy on voice.

“not really, no.” you answer and go back to singing along and applying mascara on.

when jude goes back to the screen on your phone his thumb accidentally swipes left and your whole inbox is completely exposed to him. he didn’t meant to do that, but it really was an accident and he couldn’t help but see now that it was there, only he wished he didn’t have.

some of your dms were just conversations with your friends, but a lot of them were just guys replying to your stories and hitting on you, which made him even more jealous than before. you never replied to them, going as far as deleting some of the messages you received, but since you hadn’t checked your instagram since that afternoon a lot of dms from different guys complimenting you on your story were there for jude to find.

he frowns at the phone and takes a look at you, completely oblivious while doing your eyeliner. his eyes go back to the screen and he starts looking up some pictures that you took the week before of you two.

“do you mind if i post one of those pictures you took of us last week?” he asks out of nowhere. “so i can repost it on my story.” he clarifies.

you frown a bit confused because this is the first time he has asked you something like this, but after him seeing the other guy’s dm and feeling a bit jealous you connected the dots and smile amused.

“sure.” you say.

he nods and went to post a story with the two of you looking definitely like the couple you were. he spend a few seconds thinking about a good caption, landing on a simple “my boyfriend❤️”, very straight to the point. he also tagged himself big enough for everyone to see and posted the picture, a satisfied smile on his face.

when you were done with your makeup and ready to go, you approached him and sat on his lap, your phone still in his hand.

“let me see the picture.” you smiled. he shows you the story and you rolled your eyes, a bit amused at his possessiveness. “was that really necessary?” you point at the text and he just shrugs.

“i just feel like there’s a lot of people that don't know we’re together, you know? just wanna put it out there.” you nod, fighting the smile on your face and putting your arms around him.

“is that so?” you tease him, getting closer to him if that was even possible.

“yeah, lots of guys on your dms.” he confess. “they liked your selfie earlier.”

“hmm.” you answer. “i wouldn’t know about that, i only like one guy.” a treacherous smile takes over his lips and you take the opportunity to kiss him. “wanna go? we’ll be late to dinner.”

jude just nods and gets out of bed, never dropping your hand for a second.

Gender norms?? In MY Hallownest??

this is basically just some headcanons about gender and society in Hallownest at it’s prime.

So first things first, I think that the gender stereotypes that we’ve got going on Irl are reversed in Hallownest. This has a lot to do with how some bugs in real life work. In a lot of spiders for example males are smaller, shorter lived, and have very flashy colors to attract mates. Female spiders often are larger and duller. This also applies to many other types of bugs including trilobite beetles, mantises, and some beetles(they’ve got their own shit going on with horns tho, we’ll get there don’t worry), and a bunch of others. To this effect the bugs we see in canon who are female tend to be larger than the males. I mean look at the White lady and her tiny ass, shiny ass husband. Neither are bugs but it seems likely the king took the form he did to appeal to the sensibilities of other bugs. So what’s that all mean then? I imagine in Hallownest, larger bugs with duller colors would be assumed to be ladies (or fem presenting) and smaller bugs with bright or striking shell patterns or clothing would be assumed to be guys(or masc presenting). There’s some evidence supporting this in canon too? Like Salubra calls little ghost handsome and striking and while Sly isn’t colorful he is small. Additionally almost all of the bugs we know who are fem presenting are noticeably taller than other bugs we bump into(Dryya, White Lady, Mantis lords, Herrah, Salubra, Iselda, Radi herself, Vespa, even midwife is pretty large compared to other bugs we see). Now obviously this rule isn’t ironclad or anything but it does seem like a quick and dirty guide of what gender norms might have looked like. Masc bugs would be wearing bright clothing or otherwise going out of the way to show off(Charms anyone?) and fem bugs would be the opposite, but also would generally be the ones with more power to pick and choose their partners and infinitely more power to do something about it if they picked wrong. Of course they may all be trickle down from how whipped the White lady has her husband(you go root!). Interestingly this would mean that most bugs would generally assume Hollow is fem presenting, which simply isn’t true(they’re just themself) and try to approach them with that in mind. Of course Hallownest is fallen and even if it wasn’t Hollow had no idea about this back when they lived in the kingdom.

There are only two big exceptions to this rule I could find/remember and they’re all either beetles or Bardoon. So imma start with the beetles instead of dealing with Bardoon and his giant ass. So the thing about beetles is, there’s a shit ton of them, and they’ve kinda done everything. That said a significant number of species have males with huge horns and bright colors, and dull females. The opposite of my above idea. I think this really has more to do with the broadness of beetle groups than anything else. That said in Hallownest I think that any-bug who was trying to seduce a bug with large horns who they knew to be a beetle would assume they were male instead of the general rule(Look at all of the nail masters and the Old Stag, they’re all large, horned, masculine beetles. And Myla who is a small, female, dull colored probably-beetle, also Bretta ig) .This also works nicely because horns seem to be a thing in Hallownest tied mostly to beetles so it’s an easy way of switching rulesets. Ig this means Hollow actually gives off mixed vibes cause nobody knows their species(including them let’s be real), which is probably a massive gender win for them.

Anyway rant over, I’ll probably look at this with horror in the morning and then try to untangle it and make it more coherent. Hope y’all enjoyed!

I think people’s issue with Sarah Hess is that none of the male characters she writes have normal, healthy relationships with the women in their lives. We have Daemon abusing Rhaenyra because of her, Larys cranking it to Alicent’s feet and Aegon wanking out of the window/being a sexual predator. All of that is her writing and it adds very little to the plot beyond making it squicky and uncomfortable.

She’s great at shock value, but fails to consider the bigger picture and it’s often to the detriment of character development.

Please never apologise for writing in a language that isn’t your native tongue, it’s such an impressive skill to have!

in hannibal, proairetic codes tie a lot with hermeneutic codes as the actions of the characters raise questions for the audience questioning their choices and makes the audience wonder what will happen next. the action creates tension and makes the audience wonder how the created problem(if there is one) will be resolved. for example when hannibal lecter called abigails father to inform him that "they know" and that fbi is on the way. this drives the narrative forward as then the audience wonders how the characters will react and wonder how the actions will affect the story. this action ended up with abigail becoming an orphan and their suspect dead, creating a few side plots and introducing new characters. this constant tension created by each action drives the narrative forward and engages the audience to continue watching the show

semantic codes:

connotations, things associated with something, the deeper level meaning of a symbol. this one is hard yet so easy cuz theres literally SO many of them

they basically give insight into the plot and characters, building personalities and maybe even starting the deep questions the audience will have

for example, for hannibal, hes quite sophisticated, the semantic codes for that would be how he wears suits all the time, his overall style and his acquired taste. those things connote sophistication, wealth and even control and power (especially the suit and his high respected position as a psychiatrist)

but another thing that can be derived from things like how hes always careful, always has a cloth that doesn't leave any fabric fibres, how he doesn't use anything digital, only physical things like journals to leave no traces, the fact that hes literally eating his evidence lmao, his knowledge and experience of human anatomy and mind connote that hes a careful, experienced, ambitious man and prob(definitely) is a serial killer

thinking about. that yugioh pokemon fusion thats been rattling around in my head. its been a few days.

so like, i know that yugioh and pokemon games have just been a thing. who wouldnt match yugioh, a series about games, with one of the most popular game franchises in the world.

but like, there are very few fics where its yugioh characters who live in a pokemon world. the true pokemon au that yugioh dm deserves.

anyway im a puzzleshipping fiend (im not sorry) so things have been rattling around my brain for a while.

imagine:

atem, the undefeated pokemon champion, took the pokemon training and battling world by storm at a young age, his elite four are rumored to be the toughest that the pokemon world has seen in decades.

yuugi, a young man trying to popularize a new form of bonding/competing with your pokemon through collaborative games rather than head to head battle, who might also be atem’s childhood friend who then got yeeted to another region.

atem goes to visit another region for Pokemon Champ (TM) reasons and ends up running into yuugi’s grandpa’s shop. where yuugi happens to be hosting a demo or small competition for his new pokemon trainer games. idk what to call it. games where people compete with their pokemon but it isnt beating each other up. i think yuugi just doesnt like violence and ends up creating these games because he loves pokemon and bonding with them and games. i also think he should be able to keep his game designer roots in every au, he deserves it.

anyway, atem, who has been bored with pokemon battles lately, ends up joining. only to be faced with his old friend that he hasnt seen in years. and who he has been having a very very hard time forgetting (because pinning idk i just read romance not write it). but chooses to ignore that because yuugi also lowkey doesnt react to him at all. but he has fun! he has fun for the first time in a while! but then he has to leave because of Pokemon Champ Business (TM) and hes sad.

so cue his ace pokemon running away from him because atem has been Not Himself lately. as in being pokemon champion has changed him for the worse because pokemon politics ig??? im just pulling from my memories of “red being champion was not good for him so he runs away to a snowy mountain for years” fics because i feel like that applies. expect instead of running off to a mountain, atem just becomes really mean. and cruel. think s0 vibes. (ignore the fact that s0 atem was not that bad and hes honestly my favorite flavor of atem).

so atem’s ace pokemon have broken into the muoto family shop and yuugi is desperately trying to figure out how to contact atem to get them back. (yes he does rememebr atem, he just thought atem wouldnt care to be his friend again/forgot him, so he didnt really talk to atem during the day). cue um romance! and angst! and drama! and fluff!

idk i really like the canon yuugi-atem character arcs and dynamic. they build each other up and change each other for the better. i want that be come across in that au. even though i basically havent explained anything about it. i just really like the premise i set up for it. (no i probably will never write it, but i like sharing my thoughts). (feel free to write it if you want idk if people care enough for that tho lol).

atem is someone who has lost himself in the bitterness and cutthroat nature of the pokemon competitive battling circle, seeing people mistreat their pokemon and how there is so little of what made pokemon battling fun to him in the first place. and yuugi, who was lowkey ostracized for not being interested in the traditional pokemon battling culture even though he proved to be a really good pokemon trainer and battler, so he found solace in the games his grandpa would send him and share those with his pokemon. which then inspired him to create games that people could play with and along side pokemon, but he never had the confidence to introduce it to anyone past the small town he moved to after his parents’ divorce. (why am i putting all the yuugi backstory in here? idk hes just a kid with divorced parents, so his mom took him back to her home region to live with his maternal grandpa and changed his last name to his mother’s maiden name).

but then atem and yuugi meet again! different than they were as kids (i have more on that but idk where to put it), but nonetheless still them and they want to connect again but scared to reach out. until one stray ace pokemon forces them to connect again. atem is reminded of why he loved pokemon battling in the first place and sees it again in the games that yuugi creates. yuugi finds that confidence he needs to really spread his wings through atem’s influence and encouragement. theyre a dream team fr fr.

anyway final notes that i dont have a place to put:

atem’s elite four are his canon priests, idk how it would work but i think having mahad and mana on there would be hilairous

yuugi’s first pokemon and ace pokemon is a gengar nicknamed yami (as inspired by this post)

i like to think of it as baby yuugi being very lonely in a new region and ends up hanging around some of the more dusty corners of his grandpa’s shop, and then one night a stray ghastly pops by and used its smoke to copy his hair and theyve been inseparable since

yami is also insanely protective of yuugi and scared his bullies off for him, and was very very not happy about a powerful pokemon (atem’s ace pokemon) breaking into the shop to cuddle up with his partner

yami and yuugi definitely have a gengar megastone btw

also yuugi has a garchomp nicknamed gandora whose yami’s second in command. i just love gandora a lot pls understand i adore the idea of yuugi being a little guy who just casually summons Gandora The Dragon Of Destruction on his opponents

atem’s ace pokemon is a ghost type, idk im thinking cofagrigus, because, its fitting

he also has a legendary he can just call upon, it just likes him and atem gives it treats every time it shows up (idk which legendary tho, but giratina could be a fun choice)

the Gang (TM) are yuugi’s friends that he made after he moved to the new region and are fairly wary of atem at first, but like they warm up eventually because yuugi likes him

kaiba is there still, and very rich and techy at that, and also the yuugi’s region’s pokemon champion who constantly challenges atem to pokemon battles and lives in yuugi’s town

i like to think steven stone but kaiba, which is to say rich and still makes his incredibly advanced and insane tech, but also really good at pokemon battling

kaiba also really likes yuugi’s game btw, but he never participates because of his trauma (winning? winning in some lame game? no winning only counts if its in a pokemon battle, thats the only way i can show my worth and validate myself) (no kaiba-kun, you just need therapy and some friends, pls let me be your friend and we can play games together)

yuugi and atem were friends as kids and they bonded over their love of games and pokemon, really yuugi was the one who inspired atem to become a pokemon trainer and atem was the one who inspired yuugi to make games, but then the Divorce (TM) happened

no atem didnt go looking for yuugi, its been like 15 years, yuugi probably has his own life now and doesnt need a reminder from the past probably definitely yeah

a review of the first week of cabo verde

so i've officially landed in the praia, cabo verde, airport seven (7) whole days ago, and i want to share my initial thoughts. this will be long, so here's a numbered list :)

1 . i feel like i'm a kid back in brazil but also a 21 y/o tall kid

so caboverdians speak portuguese (bc it's taught in formal schools) and they also speak kabuverdianu (creole, different across all the islands). being someone that can translate / speak at the store for the person they live with [1], it just feels like i'm a kid with a limited vocab

living in a beach town where everything is at a slower pace and is within walking / bus / taxi distance made me feel happy :) vacation!dasha is alive and well

2 . cabo verde is also a tall kid (but 48 y/o)

this one is sorta very much on me.

so i did the classic American Tourist thing and never actually learned anything about the history of the country i will be traveling to (sorry). since coming here and asking my co-workers and friends-of-misti about the general vibes of this country, i've learned so much! a lot of which Make Sense, a lot of which Confuse Me

older caboverdians tend to see themselves as not-african. i also learned that some ppl in some countries in mainland africa also don't consider themselves african bc of the way that the label "africa" comes with various histories, most of them negative bc of europe. this is why "kriolu" / "creole" are such popular words ! also younger caboverdians acknowledge that they are african / black if that applies to them

race is phenotypical here. which is what i expected (closer to how latam sees race ig?? more like how brasil sees race ig??). what i'm trying to say is that if you introduce yourself as "from the usa", they'll always say "no, where are u Actually from" and won't rest until u say something like "peruvian, chinese, etc." bc a lot of ppl outside of the usa don't believe that the usa has "actual indigenous ppl anymore" [2]. it also means that speaking english in the street invites ppl to ask you ur race

being east asian (chinese) in cabo verde is sorta .. rough. the microaggressions that i've seen in the two (2) days that my chinese-american roommate face is kinda Wild. when the person leading our cultural training said "oh sometimes ppl will call u 'china'" to my friend i thought that it meant that it would replace "ma'am" in the usual "yes, ma'am" / "no, ma'am" conversations with strangers, not that random ppl will yell "china!" multiple times to my friend when we're sitting on the sand. this has ties with macau and the rest of the chinese gov't building universities, casinos, and having a Business Presence in the country. but at least we got tourism industry students to invite us to clubs bc my friend is chinese-american??? [3] it's just really weird to me bc i haven't faced any racial / appearance-based ... acknowledgements ... even tho i clearly look like a foreigner in a sorta-racially-homogenous place (talking abt the mostly black island santiago)

independence day is not really celebrated here : ( ppl have conflicting opinions on the independence of the country. most of the country likes the day (july 5) bc it's a day off from work. other ppl say that it's hard to be a country with growing pains and would rather have portugal's gov't deal with building the infrastructure. other ppl are putting in the work to ease the growing pains. kinda sad since massachusetts, rhode island, and brazil (afaik) have big celebrations (fireworks and everything) rather than just a random ceremony where the president speaks for a bit and everyone goes home

a lot of the night life is european. someone pls teach me how to vibe to edm and house music and general non-lyrical music fjewiaofj but also shoutout to that club with brazilian funk. if only i learned the dance that my são paulo friend taught me </3

3 . the food is sorta fantastic here ngl

yes, i'm behind on the foodposting, and idk if i'll ever catch up lmao

for my lovely friends who eat meat, cachupa / caxupa is one of the loveliest things to eat. it's a meat-based (with veggies!) soup dish ?? it usually has either fish or pork tho. it's the national dish for a reason <33 also the seafood is good. sola-approved!

for my lovely friends who don't eat meat, i found a vegan place like 8 min away from my apt! also bc i'm in a City, it's easy to ask for things to be made vegetarian (plus there's always couscous and salads lol). also veg cachupa exists

for all my lovely friends, the food isn't Too too varied. i feel like the most common foods are pizzas, pastas, burgers, and shwarmas. also chinese foods are translated in an interesting way: noodles are pasta / spaghetti, dumplings are pastels (the empanada-esque brazilian translation), etc. there are also a bunch of brazilian churrascarias and one (1) indian restaurant

also i tried to be Cool and add some hot sauce to one of my pastas and i had to pretend i didn't want to kill myself in front of the Adults on the table

4. kabuverdianu is a cool language

i learned duolingo's haitian creole to get the vibes of a creole language. though this is attached to portuguese instead of french, a lot of the characteristics are the same. the words borrowed from the european language are spelled in a way that makes sense (maybe in a way that makes more sense to spanish-speakers?). i also like how gendered things tend to just be made gender neutral (usually defaulting to the masc way). i can hear it and understand it if spoken to me slowly, but after that ... oof!

5 . marcha do orgulho made me v happy

what if i change my "go to carnaval in every continent" goal to "go to pride in every continent" hehe. i think it was so Good how the pride that had 30 ppl last year exceeded their goal of 100 ppl this year by A Lot. even though there were a lot of ppl from the EU who backed the event (logistically spread the word i think??), the ppl who showed up were mostly black and made it such a fun time :,)

i also met a trans woman who claimed was the only trans woman in her island :,0 [5] she traveled all the way to santiago for pride

6 . overall i'm excited for the summer

i think that i'll spend a lot of my time reading a book by the beach and learning kabuverdianu while telling myself that i can maybe be an immigrant like my parents [4] or at least work abroad for a few years maybe. i'm excited to be an adult. i went to the beach (one on the other side of the island) today, and i just feel refreshed. i got to swim in the water like if it were a pool and hang out with the fish lol

In the US there are trains only the amount of trains varies wildly from state to state and town to town. For instance, where I live, I can't take a train to school or to another destination within my town/city. I could, however, take a train to a city 3 hours away, or take a train to another state. In the city in my state that's 3 hours away, they do have a citywide tram system, but it looks like trains so they call it a light rail. In places like New York City, Washington DC, or Chicago (all big city areas) they do have trains that people use to get around as transport.

but in most places that aren't big city areas, it's a car, walking, or taking the bus (which in some places is not the most reliable option, if I wanted to take a bus to my university's campus it would take 1 hr 41 minutes. It takes 17 minutes to drive there)

there is hope though as more places are getting trains/trams at the very least in developmental stages :D!!

Ohh in that case then it's not too different from here ig? Even in India trains are usually for long distance travel between different cities. Ofc this doesn't always apply, like there's the local trains in Mumbai which are veryy widely used in fact they're notorious for being wayy too crowded. There's also metro trains in a few, well, metropolitan cities like delhi, mumbai, kolkata, the metro in my city is still not fully constructed tho so the bus is most common. Still buses here are pretty reliable and at most only take 5-10 mins extra depending on how far you're going.

And yes i do like taking the train! I don't have a particular preference though, I just like traveling anywhere because it's fun to look outside of windows :D tho my favouritism is influenced by how rare a certain mode of transport is. Which is why travelling by metro or a double decker bus (I have only sat in one once in mumbai, I'm not aware of double decker buses being available anywhere else?) definitely holds more novelty!

For 15a, god, I’m torn. I’ll tell you this much tho: you won’t ever find my introvert ass in a nightclub, and that’s a promise! As for the other three, I love museums as much as the next girl, but it’s gotta be between a forest and a library. I’m a bookish bitch, but I also love being out in nature and vibing amongst the trees, especially in the fall when the leaves start to turn or if that forest ends in a mountaintop :)

For 15b, my style is definitely pretty comfy and casual. When I’m not wearing football shirts, what I wear really just depends on the season. If we’re talking fall and winter, pretty much sweaters, leggings, and boots every day (think Rory Gilmore from Gilmore Girls or Eva Mohn from Skam only more extreme). These are MY motherfucking seasons. I’m a sweater slut…there, I said it. For spring and summer, I don’t care what I wear as long as I can wear flip flops on my feet 🤷‍♀️

I haven’t made any super big decisions recently, but I’m about to make a really big one: I’m about to apply for grad schools, and in the process, I’ve got to decide whether I want to stay in the states and round out my studies here or if I want to wrap things up over in Europe (I’m thinking Scotland, since I left a piece of my heart there a few months back). And when I tell you have I have no idea what I’m gonna do, I’m serious lol. I mean, if I decide to go to uni in Scotland, I’ve basically gotta commit to at least spending a couple of years there. And idk, I’m nervous about the weight of that decision and the unpredictability of the outcome. I might love it more there as much as I did the 4 months I studied there previously, or I might not. It’s tricky. Should I stay or should I go, ya know? Decisions, decisions…

62. The first thing that comes to my mind when I hear the word “heart”? Probably a feeling: passion. Giving your all to something—pouring your heart and soul into something you truly love. It doesn’t have to be a job; it can just be a hobby, something to pass the time. What better way is there to live life than with passion for whatever it is you’re doing or however it is you’re living?

88. First, a lil bb anecdote: my body loves sleep. I sleep like a bear hibernating for the winter; 9 hours is simply insufficient. I’m entirely convinced I could sleep a year if left unchecked or without alarms to stop me. But apparently this morning my brain decided to stage a coup d’état against my body, and I woke up randomly at 7am. Not sure why…I just did, I guess? So that’s fun. Orion: ryan doesn't really know what he wants, because he spent so much time convincing himself that he wanted to be a soldier. i think his main hope is that with enough time he'll stop having nightmares about akuze and stop feeling guilty for surviving. he starts thinking about what he wants to do seriously when he's with cerberus, because working with them makes him more depressed than ever, and he knows that if he doesn't set some sort of goal to work towards he won't make it through his stint with them. so he decides he just wants some land to use for designing a house and getting it built, as well as for growing plants and seeing which he can learn to cultivate. he gets a few desk plants for his cabin, too, which helps w his mental health.

It's like that time some author got investigated by the military. He saw the public floor plan for a boat but the rest of the floor plan was confidential. He then thought about it for a while & figured out the most efficient floorplan for a boat like that. The military said "how did you know our floor plan?" & he said "this is the best way to build a boat, of course you would make it like this". These things have the same end goal & so since they are both going for the best path to achieve that goal, they end up with the same (or similar) technology.

Yeah YOU shut off communications. Nausea & a rash, not coughing like that... & like, would it really be that short of a time to take effect? idk. If it is that fast to take effect & it is that deadly, then it really should not be classified as "it won't kill you" babes. Then again, the spy had to wear stuff like that, he was probably not up there for long. I was under the assumption that it would be painful & nauseating & annoying (even if you only come into contact with it once) but it wouldn't kill you, even if you're in the atmosphere for hours, for days even. Maybe you would get a rash in your lungs & die like that. I just think it's kind of unrealistic to say it's non-lethal & then switch to it's lethal. Give them a bit more time. Define long-term. Say maybe "it is harmful but not deadly, at least in the short term, but if we're exposed continually for more than maybe ten hours it could lead to severe damage, & if we're too nauseous to get up & get help we could be exposed for more than 24 hours, which could potentially cause (harm that leads to) death."

How to Feed an Abyss!

What I Liked

"sweet text" ok authornim whatever you say... ok it's actually quite sweet tho. shi yuan and lu tinghan are both very sweet. it's just that being a post-apocalyptic? story, it's inevitably rather bleak although at the same time it's also full of hope. at its core it's still a very warm story of an ordinary love story in a not-so-ordinary setting.

before saying many, many things abt shi yuan and lu tinghan i'd like to make a special mention of the many, many side characters. lu bafang and wang yu, the first people whom shi yuan met and are still good friends with; cheng youwen and qin luoluo and wolfgang and tracy (and xia fang ig); lin yeran and his dead lover and edward and his dead family; general su and his son and the shitty jiang dude and the rest of lu tinghan's squad; alice the AI and her long-lost brother; prof guan whose snacks always get stolen; princess alicia and her mole people; even lu tinghan's absent parents, and so many more... like it's clear that shi yuan learned a lot from them, but they each also have their own stories, and the novel makes it a point that they're not just side characters, they're people trying their best to live in a world fraught with constant dangers, and they make the story just all that more vibrant.

lu tinghan... a very noble soul. he's the hero of humanity but to his sweet little abyss, he's just his human. he is really very good. kind of low quality (lmao) but still very good. top tier ml tbh, super green flag. love how he teases shi yuan, love how he respects shi yuan, love how he's responsible to the people of the alliance and his humbleness, like when he stands vigil when the death knell rings and when he said that no one is irreplaceable, he might meet his end in the abyss but there will be others who also rise to become heroes. love how he's not perfect---he litters (lmao), probably a beast in bed (shi yuan would know), is too cowardly to say a proper goodbye (but tries his best anyway), is tone deaf (but shi yuan still gets him a violin and even says that he should stay at the wall and play bc monsters will def not wanna come close LMAO). he is just so so so good. he can join the ranks of top-grade ml along w lou ying from trashbin boyfriend and dong zheng from i was once a legend.

shi yuan adorable cute sweet the best abyss i love when he purrs whenever lu tinghan rubs his head and how his tail also emotes and how he's good? at acting and how he's traumatized over lu tinhan's littering lmao. how under his seeming obliviousness towards human customs and common sense, he's really an abyss who has lived for thousands and thousands of years and has some wisdom that comes with it. i love his crooked sense of aesthetics and naming sense and how he and lu tinghan dig at each other lmao he can be so savage sometimes. i love how he loves both humanity and monsters, i love his journey through the human settlements and through the wasteland, the empathy he has for both sides, and how his love for lu tinghan evolved from "i want to infect you, the world is cruel, let us live together forever in the mud and bones" to being by lu tinghan's side in his final moments, letting him die with dignity as a human and believing that he will find him again.

breaks my heart when lu tinghan takes him out on an autumn outing to all the fallen cities, revisiting the places full of their memories as their farewell trip, and he said that he understands that lu tinghan is human and that he's been ready to say good-bye from the very first moment they met. this trip actually gave me hi3 graduation trip vibes anw i cried. "this is a story of love, and it will end with love" this also applies to hfa. the core of their love story is that they might not need an eternity, it's the present that's important and they'll make the present as precious as possible, in the limited time that they have.

also ig it was sort of obvious, the foreshadowing in the play "the martyr", how shi yuan in the end did become the god of salvation and lu tinghan is humanity's martyr, but it's also rly poetic in a way, kind of like the inevitable end that was coming anyway, and they accepted it with no regrets, making the most of what little time they had. their relationship was really so sweet that one can't help but really truly want them to be happy.

the real answer to the ever-repeated question of "i like little mushroom, what other novels are similar to it?" that said hfa and lm r only similar to each other on the surface---the fundamental and philosophical concepts they're exploring are completely different but it also makes it incredibly fun to compare and contrast the two! not to say which one is better, but just to explore the themes of humanity, love, and "eternity" that both novels delve into.

im convinced that shi yuan and an zhe could be the best of friends tho

i especially like the contrast of shi yuan being basically god of the monsters but lu tinghan describes him as "he's my lover" and an zhe is just a tiny little mushroom but to lu feng "he is the one who judges me". that juxtaposition of "position of power" relative to the actual being's "power level" is so delicious

also how the summary is a lie and yet not. like when the story got to the part where the summary is n i was like ohhhhh so that's how it is... it's not a lie... but at the same time... the story def isn't as lighthearted as the summary implies

some parts of the story were like a fever dream. the lighthouse and the dolphin. the whole deep dive into abyss no. 1. the ending. their first meeting. the atmosphere rly felt like there's this silvery gauze curtain obscuring one's sight and yet it also makes the scenery more beautiful

tbh i thought the main story ending was perfect as it was but the extras were sweet and explained some things and gave them the happy ending that was def def well-earned.

i cried at the main story ending. it was so beautiful

sometimes i love you is wanting to infect them so they can stay together forever and then understanding that dying as a human is dignity, and also allowing for the infection to happen just so that they can stay together forever.

sometimes i love you is waiting for an indeterminate amount of time for just one person to come, and finding that person who is waiting to give him an infinite amount of love in a finite time.

What I Disliked

the body count 💀💀💀 yes i am aware that it's a post-apocalyptic novel yes i am also weak to sad stories and regrets and unfulfilled promises and a future that is out of reach. it's less that i "dislike it" and more that im rly weak to this sort of stuff.

sort of wish shi yuan met lu tinghan's parents in the extras, i feel like it would've been a nice callback to the illusion lu tinghan experienced

when i was at like the 100 ch count i read this until 4am to finish it and i cried a good 3-4 times intermittently from like 1-4am reading the climax and ending and extras good lord

i made a playlist while reading ch 100-136 lmao some anime ost actually suit the story quite well, esp things like macross and guilty crown/egoist. special mention to eill's finale for the main story ending when lu tinghan and shi yuan reunited. those lyrics...
