it never entered my mind (at last)

Summary: It’s movie night and Peter’s turn to choose. Still so early in their relationship, he wants to be the perfectly caring and sensitive boyfriend, so he picks a romance movie. It does not go quite as expected.

Pairing: Peter Parker x vampire!Reader (3rd person, she/her); fluff, emotional conversations, new relationship awkwardness, but also established relationship.

He had it all planned out. Frankly, it wasn’t that hard to get everything together in record time. One gets movie night ready much faster when one doesn’t have to agonize about guessing favorite drinks or snacks. There was popcorn, nachos and an assortment of viscerally colorful candy, all laid out in his preferred order on the coffee table and all ready to be consumed exclusively by him. An unnecessary quantity of diet coke and apple juice was also present, along with chewing gum on stand-by, just in case. Actually, he didn’t know how she felt about kissing him with minty breath, but he assumed it would be better than with cheese mouth.

Not everything on display tonight was just for him, however. He had blankets and pillows galore, maybe enough to build a fort, or maybe enough for a sleepover counting fifty people. There was a scented candle burning in the kitchen that he’d bought at Bloomingdales instead of TJ Maxx because he thought whatever Pomme D’Amour was sounded better than Warm Vanilla Sugar. He didn’t want his place to smell like a bakery when he knew she wouldn’t find it delicious.He just hoped the forty-eight dollars he was now burning would be well spent. Ten minutes before she was supposed to arrive, he frantically scrambled to remove the llama-print pillows and a panda blanket he’d had since middle school. Why was that thing still in his apartment? When did he even bring it with him?

The intercom rang unexpectedly. She was early.

Should he febreze the place again? Open the windows? Was the carpet really vacuumed? He’d done it twice just to be sure but -

A knock at the door. His heart jumped out of his chest. Not only was she early, but she was abnormally fast to arrive at his apartment, seventeen stories high. The elevator was a relic. He should’ve had more time.

Super speed. That was what he got for dating a vampire.

He almost turned in a circle like a hopeless idiot before closing the distance to the door with wide steps. Swallowing hard, he pulled it open and smiled in greeting, though it felt forced and unnatural. He hadn’t had a girl at his place in years. The sight of her was simultaneously endearing and terrifying; he didn’t want to fuck this up. She was important.

“Hi,” she said with a smile that was much more genuine than his own.

Underneath her open wool coat, she wore a cable knit greige sweater paired with dark brown herringbone trousers, a combination that was both very her and very uncomfortable for cuddling on the couch.

“Hi,” he breathed, extremely aware of how weird he sounded to his own ears.

Moving aside to let her in, he remembered a horrible detail. He hadn’t taken out the trash. So much for the fifty-dollar candle.

“Are you ok?” she asked suddenly, while removing her boots in the hallway. He didn’t tell her to do that. He should’ve told her not to -

“Your heart’s beating really fast,” she remarked. His eyes were drawn to her lips and how she was delicately chewing on her bottom one. “Not to be creepy, but do you think you could slow down your pulse?”

She was asking him not to be nervous? It only made him more nervous, knowing that she noticed. When he said nothing, she appeared to shrink in on herself.

“It’s just that... You smell really good.”

“Thanks?” he said, uncertain. It was great to hear, but confusing.

Her new smile now resembled his, awkward and not quite genuine. His heart only started beating faster at how terribly he thought the whole thing was already going.

“That’s um - “ She breathed out a laugh. “That’s code for your blood smells really good.”

Oh. Oh. Fuck. Parker, you idiot.

While he stared like an imbecile, she hurried through a follow-up to one of the strangest sentences that he’d ever heard.

“You don’t have to worry. It’s fine. I’m - You know, I’m not a newbie. I’m not gonna munch on you or anything. But you do smell better than anyone I’ve ever smelled and that makes it a little difficult to... uh, focus. Yeah. Probably shouldn’t have said that.”

Her eyes wouldn’t meet his throughout the explanation, and she kept playing with the lining of her pockets. Almost as though by magic, he immediately felt better. She was nervous too. The realization did wonders for his blood pressure.

“Should I - “

“I’m happy you’re here,” he interrupted.

The statement hung in the air for a few moments. They stood in the hallway of his apartment, two adults with considerable life experience rendered helpless to adolescent trepidation. A megawatt smile lit up her entire face.

“Yeah?”

Peter nodded, daring to lean forward and place a chaste kiss to her cold cheek. He noticed her lashes flutter momentarily and felt a surge of pride spread through his chest.

“I’m happy too.”

Now that goofy smiles were present on both their faces, Peter felt a lot more comfortable leading her into the living room, where he’d already turned the overhead lights onto a lower intensity. He hoped everything looked nice. His apartment wasn’t a penthouse at the top of a Central Park postcode, but he’d worked hard the last few years and was content with what he’d managed to achieve. Needing no roommates in New York was an accomplishment in itself these days, but he was also aware that she was likely richer than the Queen.

There were subtle tells, like the way she dressed: elegant, understated and clean. But again, not appropriate for cuddles or range of movement. He felt a little weird thinking about nothing else, but they’d missed the opportunity to cuddle at her place after he spilled sour grape Four Loko over her pristine white couch. He thought he wouldn’t get another date after that, but she kissed him so sweet right on her doorstep and asked to see him again despite the frown embedded in his forehead.

So he was trying not to let his expectations get out of control, but he was only human. Plus, he’d wracked his brain trying to pick the perfect date movie based on the information he already had about her. And maybe the information that a slew of the worst websites had listed in neat yet nonsensical little categories.

She gave him the impression that she was a romantic - she had to be, to have lived that long and still found a way to be wooed by the likes of him. So he settled on the 1997 juggernaut, Titanic. It was decently long enough for intimacy, had a tragic love story that wasn’t too sappy, and adequate visual effects that respected the laws of physics - a must for him. And who knows? Maybe she would tear up and seek comfort in his arms. Jesus, he was such a guy.

He cleared his throat inconspicuously as she settled on the couch, taking in the array of snacks and drinks he’d laid out with raised eyebrows.

“Oh,” she said, “Nothing for me?”

It took him a couple seconds to register the mirth dancing in her eyes.

“Sorry. Didn’t have any O negative lying around,” he snickered.

“That’s ok. I brought my own.”

Peter watched her curiously as she searched the contents of her handbag, unsure of how he felt about what was going to happen. Would he be weirded out? He wasn’t queasy by any means, but the idea of her sipping from a blood bag like a Capri Sun wasn’t all that inviting. He didn’t mind. He just wanted to kiss her later tonight and if he’d been worried about cheese breath, then blood breath was... Well, a different challenge altogether. He was biting the inside of his cheek tryin to seem normal, but she stopped searching a few seconds in, looking up at him with a shit-eating grin.

“I’m messing with you. That’s more of a sixth date activity,” she said, discarding her bag by the arm of the couch.

He was both relieved and embarrassed to have been fooled.

“So next time, then?” he tried weakly, taking a seat next to her in precisely the right spot- mathematically calculated to be appropriately distanced, but not too far. Jesus. He was acting like a teenager again, spooked in the same way he would’ve been if he had scored a date with the most popular girl in school.

“Mmhm, sure.”

She smiled at him knowingly, further settling into the spot she picked. It was the nicer side of the couch, which he tried to subtly make her choose. Every couch had a nicer side. So did hers before he spilled Four Loko on it.

“Peter.”

“Huh?”

“If your plans for tonight include building a fort, you need to tell me. I need to mentally prepare,” she said, lips pulled into a sly smile. She was glancing around at the myriad blankets and pillows and throw covers and -

“It’s uh... It’s too much, isn’t it?” he stammered.

“No,” she answered with a shake of her head. “Not at all.”

“You’re a dirty liar.”

“No. I mean it. I love the various motifs you’ve got going on. I think it’s admirable that you pulled out every blanket you’ve owned since birth,” she chuckled mercilessly.

“Oh no. No. You can make fun of me for being gullible but I draw the line at making fun of my capybara duvet.”

“I wasn’t making fun of it. Who doesn’t enjoy a good capybara?”

She was taunting him. Messing with him in that way that made him relax and get excited at how well they meshed.

“They taste delicious, actually.”

His face fell in an instant. She burst out laughing in a fit of giggles, pulling the material away from the pile in the corner and throwing it over her legs. Little capybaras decorated the dark green stitching of the blanket, some sleeping, others holding hands. She traced one of the couples with a long finger.

“Don’t worry. The capybaras are safe. We’re cruelty-free here at... Bloodsuckers LLC.”

He pouted. It was the only thing he had left after she roughed him up so nimbly.

“Don’t do that,” she warned. “I came to watch a movie with you. If you keep pouting like that, we’re not going to get very far into it,” she continued softly.

A sharp breath stung his lungs on the way in, and he stiffened up at the same time that she relaxed into the couch, watching him with sultry eyes. Or at least that’s how it felt.

“So... what did you pick?” she asked.

There was so much that he didn’t remember about Titanic, and revisiting the film after so many years was almost like watching it for the first time. He didn’t appreciate it enough as a kid, but it looked real enough to him now that he wondered if they’d had engineers on set when they made it.

In particular, one of the things he couldn’t have picked up on as a child was how much of the movie centered around the class struggle at the heart of the tragedy. It almost made him reconsider his choice of movie, because this was definitely not that lighthearted. Well, not like he expected it to be for that last bit, but everything that came before was kind of sad, too.

Another thing that his brain completely overlooked was the love scene, a last gasp of uplifting happiness before the real disaster unfolded. His kid brain definitely didn’t get that one, and he snickered quietly when he remembered that he’d been confused as to why there were foggy windows in the car. Despite it all, however, he worried that the emotional response he’d expected was never going to happen. His girlfriend didn’t appear to be enjoying it that much.

She’d said very little since the movie began, only responding to his short comments here and there, more with interjections and less with words. Around halfway through the movie, she’d found the courage to wiggle her way into his arms when he was too much of a coward to initiate anything, and that gave him confidence that it wasn’t all lost. Maybe it just wasn’t the right movie for her. He should’ve asked, instead of perusing stupid articles and Quora inquiries.

The iceberg had only just struck the side of the ship and mayhem began soon thereafter, and though he wasn’t scared of water, he could admit that some of the shots were masterfully horrific. He didn’t know exactly how much of the movie remained, but his science brain was so focused on the scene of the ship breaking into two that he almost missed her little whisper.

“It was so much darker that night,” she mumbled, burrowing further into his embrace.

It took him a little while to process what she said. He felt like he’d just had a bucket of ice water thrown at him, which was strangely apropos.

“What?” he asked, confused and for once hoping that he was making an incorrect assumption.

“Uh... nothing. The film lighting is nice. It’s just not that accurate. It was pitch black darkness, and a moonless night.”

Peter breathed a sigh of relief.

“Are you one of those Titanic buffs?” he asked lightly, pressing a small kiss into the side of her head.

On the screen, the ship’s stern was raised in the air at a ninety degree angle, ready to take its final plunge to the bottom of the North Atlantic. She took a deep breath that oozed discomfort.

“Are you?” Peter tried again, no longer certain.

“Um... No,” she said quietly, placing her hand atop his where it rested just below her ribs. “I was there.”

He said nothing for a while. He didn’t even know what he could say in response to that revelation. A small shiver ran down his spine as his mind slowly made the connection between what he was seeing on the screen and the woman he held in his arms. The chaos of people clinging to their last moments, the hopelessness of knowing that no salvation was coming, and the heartbreak of the separation of families - it was one thing to see it represented on a dark screen. It was a lot harder to imagine someone having lived through it. In fact, it was so hard that he had to pause the movie and defrost his limbs, but when he reached for the remote, she stopped him with a gentle hand.

“Leave it, please? It’s almost over, anyway.”

He obliged her hesitantly, resorting instead to pulling the blanket up higher around them both. They sat quietly as the last of the ship sank below the tepid ocean, and Peter forgot all about the love story that had never even been. What his eyes couldn’t look away from were the hundreds of people in the icy water, struggling to survive while the clock had already started on their lives.

“My dress got caught on something sharp. A broken metal plate, I thought. It was too dark to see underwater, even for me. For a couple hundred meters, I went down with it. I’d never been so scared,” she told him.

His heart almost jumped out of his chest at the images her confession splattered across his mind, and he reached for the remote again, only to be stopped - again.

“I like the ending. Real or not. The sun rises in just a little bit and I want to see it.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know,” Peter said, feeling lost for words.

“Peter, of course you didn’t. How could you have? It’s ok, I don’t mind. It was a long time ago.”

“You almost died?” He phrased it as a question out of lingering confusion. Why didn’t she say something to him when the movie started?

“Vampires don’t need to breathe, so I couldn’t drown. But I could be killed with no difficulty if the pressure got too high. That’s not why I was scared. I’ve lived a long life and that was true back then also. I wasn’t scared to die. But... it was cold down there all around me, and I couldn’t see. I was being dragged down, alone, and nobody would ever find me, not even my family. That made me so terrified that I couldn’t even think.”

Slowly, she turned around in his arms until she was facing him, a muted sadness carved into her eyes.

“I resurfaced so much farther away from where everybody else was. I think I must’ve swam not just up, but away. I really couldn’t see much when I was under. But on the surface, I could hear even less. It was so strange. Maybe my ears were full of water, but it felt like being in a room with no echo. I didn’t even hear the boat that passed right by me until someone pulled me in from the water.”

Softness gently pulled at her features.

“It was a young ship officer named Anthony Hewitt. He gave me his hat and coat even though it was freezing that night. We remained friends until his death in 1952. He survived the shipwreck and two world wars, and it was polio that got him,” she revealed.

Peter felt like he was being let inside a treasure room that had been lost for centuries. He listened, enraptured.

“I’d offered to turn him in 1921, but he declined. He said he didn’t want to live forever with the memories he had, and that he’d never forgotten the look in my eyes that night.”

“You loved him,” he said after a bout of silence.

She nodded, fingers gently twining with his as a small smile gradually lit up her face.

“He was the first human I’d told the truth to in over a century. We lived together in New York for two years before he was conscripted into the British Army. Back across the Atlantic he went, even though he didn’t have to. He said he was more scared of the ocean than of going into war,” she recounted fondly.

“I thought I’d never see him again, but he came back to me. Not in one piece, though. A part of him was lost out there forever. And that part included his love for me, or anyone else, for the rest of his life. He never married. Never had children. When the next war came around, he was too old for combat but went anyway. He came back again, only to die seven years later. I hadn’t seen him since ‘48, but he asked me to be there with him when he... when he went. He said that if he lives on in my memory, then he will be immortal too.”

It seemed his plan for the night had been thoroughly switched around. He didn’t expect to be the one teary-eyed by the end of the movie, but there he was - biting back unforeseen sadness at a story he never thought he would hear.

“It’s tough with you mortal men,” she mumbled, lips pressing into his warm cheek all sweet. “Especially when you’ve got a sense of duty.”

That was new. It was new and incredible and terrifying. She was telling him something in words that he could only grasp in feeling.

“I don’t think I‘ll be going to war, bud,” he said quietly, fingers tracing a meaningless pattern along her shoulder.

“But you do. Every night, you do.”

His eyes softened instantly, finally understanding her concern. He had to admit that he never thought it would be a worry of hers, what with her own powers. He hadn’t realized that someone who couldn’t die would be struck by mortality in other ways.

“I’ll come back every time. I promise.”

“Peter. You can’t promise me that. And I need to tell you something before we go any further.”

He wasn’t happy to see her pulling away, but he gestured that she should keep the blanket while she talked. It gave him a needed boost of confidence that she wouldn’t straight up leave.

“Anthony Hewitt was the last person I loved. We had two wonderful years together before he went and gave everything he had to a senseless war. He left every bit of himself in the fight and kept nothing with which to return home - to me, or to anyone.” Her voice had lowered as though she uttered a lament, or a sorrowful, hopeless prayer. “I can’t do that again. Emotionally, but also physically. Vampires aren’t quite built for heartbreak. It took me a century to try again, and here I am with you - also a stubborn, dutiful man. And I knew that from the beginning. But, if you intend on leaving everything of yourself out there, you need to tell me before I let myself fall in love with you.”

While his body reacted all on its own it seemed, Peter’s mind was trying to come up with something coherent to say in return. This topic was not one he expected to be approached. At least, not so soon.

Standing up straighter on the couch and angling his body towards hers, he took a deep breath that he held onto for a few seconds. They ran out so quickly. He was thinking back to a time far away, when he’d had a similar version of this conversation. He was much younger back then, hurtling promises left and right that he always ended up breaking.

“This is... You’re important to me. We’re not dating just to see where it goes. I’m not young like that anymore,” he chose to say.

Her little smile soothed his nerves.

“You are, though.”

“Well, not that young by human standards then. I don’t plan on doing this forever, but I also don’t plan on giving it up overnight.” He tried to be careful with his next words. “I’ve done the losing. Done the raging. I’ve already left some part of me out there. I’m - I’m still me. Still Peter.”

He couldn’t decipher the look on her face. He could only sit there and watch her weigh his statement. She pulled the blanket closer briefly, lips moving to the side as she chewed on the inside of one. A long while in Peter’s mind passed quietly. And then she opened up the blanket to cover him again, another kiss landing on the corner of his mouth.

“Ok, still Peter. I trust you.”

They may not have built a fort, but it felt like he was inside of one right then, having a victorious lie-down after hours of arduous work. And yet there was still one reward that had eluded him for weeks.

“Wanna cuddle. Can we?”

It turned out that simply asking was better - better than hoping and definitely better than covertly trying to set up the perfect pieces to fall in the right order.

“I wonder how capybaras cuddle.”

A surprised chuckle shook his chest.

“Maybe we should watch a nature documentary next,” he suggested. Her eyes lit up dangerously fast at his idea. “Aw, bud. If I’d known you liked that, I would’ve put on National Geographic.”

“Nat Geo Wild, please.”

His laughter was joyous. He was going to get his cuddles, and a better understanding of exactly what their relationship might look like in the future. And he couldn’t wait for either.

Val: Chad, please. I uh- I actually wanted to talk to you about that. Chad: Valerian, if you don't want to have sex with me right now you can just tell me. Val: No, no it's not that- I mean you're perfect, it's just- I've been… googling. Chad: You've been… googling?

Val: Trying to figure out what's wrong with me. It's just most of the time I find the idea of committing any sort of sexual act completely repulsive in nature, especially with another person involved. I don't like to be touched- yourself being the one very large exception.

Val: But then sometimes I look at you and something in the dark part of me snaps- I want to completely tear you apart, make you scream so loudly the walls vibrate with my name, claim every single inch of you, and leave you writhing in a crumpled mess on the floor. Chad: Val-

Note

Zixuan actually does wear a TON of fairly complex embroidery even on his inner layers it's just very light and hard to see, but if you zoom in or when the light hits his robes the right way you can see the patterns of embroidery shimmering and you realize it's actually fairly complex. (Ironically as anon mentioned this actually makes CQL!Zixuan by far the most novel Lan dressed lol. Seemingly simple pale robes at first glance, actually fuck off expensive and probably a bitch to wash)

So what you're saying is that Jin Zixuan is sporting the xianxia version of, like, a millionaire wearing jeans and a black turtleneck sweater, but the jeans are custom-tailored and cost $2000 and the turtleneck is made of that crazy expensive wool from an endangered wild llama cousin found in the Andes. That tracks, honestly.

I’m so drained after spending Christmas with my family but I also feel like I was too hard on them, so here are some positives.

My little bro surprised us by showing up, all the way from Japan.

my little bro very consistently and easily used my correct name, even made up a new nickname based on it, which was so sweet.

my uncle correctly gendered me twice. Thats like 2 out of 167, but hey, little wins.

the food was great.

my uncle let me try all the expensive whiskeys from his stash.

I got to team up with Darth Vader in VR

my mom actually wrote “my firstborn child” on a giftcard for me instead of misgendering me, but idk, it was mildly salty.

my uncle gave me a llama wool sweater he’d bought for himself in Peru and it’s very warm and manly.

the fam didn’t give me a hard time about not wanting to play cards, and didn’t excessively guilt trip me for listening to avicii in headphones and writing instead.

never once got drafted to kitchen duty for ‘being woman’—mostly thanks to my little bro again, whomst made a joke out of wanting to wash dishes so much that we had to fight him to make him stop. <3

This is all the sport/DK/worsted weight yarn. Are those the same thing? No. Are they interchangeable/combinable in colorwork? Sometimes.

Alpaca and alpaca/llama blend. Surprisingly soft, that, and it's from "the Wooly Women of Michigan" which I can only assume is a lesbian fiber commune. The world could use more of those, really.

Second pic above is "oops I found more alpaca" & wanted to document it all together.

Wool wool wool. I don't even like pink; I believe I had ideas about overdying those with walnut.

There's more fishermen's wool than this actually, a sweater's-worth of the marled color (found in the "shame" section of this documentation).

"Potentially colorwork" category. The Paton's is noticeably scratchier than the Rowan/Knit Picks/Debbie Bliss ones.

Wait no actually here are all the potential color combinations in this weight. The rest of the bagged/larger quantity yarns I'll cover in the next post, but if I want to glance at all the colors I could use, this is that pic.

About Cóndor Q'hawaq

The people of the native villages know that he is a shaman, the closest ones even know his condition of (quasi)immortal and servant of the Pachamama. But everyone treats him with respect for his position, his abilities, and the help he usually provides.

He tries to be self-sufficient (emotionally) given his immortal condition. However, He fails because he still retains his human essence and the internal struggle of both occasionally generates personality and mental disorders. Internally, he wants to belong and forge meaningful bonds with human beings but given some of his personality traits, he tends to unconsciously avoid contact.

Concept

The design was made by the artist Blazemaléfica, a very good friend of mine with whom I have been working for about 10 years on several projects.

When working on the design, we wanted a character that felt modern but at the same time had apparent relation to the Andean mysticism, that felt unique, but not alien to its culture, and finally, that felt intriguing, but without too many hidden references that would impede its quick interpretation.

As this project receives collaboration from several people, we also avoided adding several details to the model, the reason is that the character needs to be simple enough for animators or other illustrators to reference.

Clothing

Some of his garments mimic the color palette and shapes of Andean condors. The open poncho with Andean motifs, sleeves, and collar is a free design by the artist. The shawl is made with alpaca wool and cotton fibers. It has chacana motifs carefully hand-embroidered by the Great Achachila of the Aconcagüa and given to him as a gift.

His long, loose-fitting black sweater is made from a blend of cotton, llama, and merino, while the light gray shirt he wears underneath is long, linen, and has a triangular front bottom tail.

La gente de los pueblos originarios, saben que él es un shamán, los más allegados inclusive conocen su condición de (quasi)inmortal y de siervo de la Pachamama. Pero todos lo tratan con respeto por su cargo, sus capacidades y la ayuda que suele brindar.

Intenta ser autosuficiente (en el plano emocional) dada su condición de inmortal, pero falla, porque aún conserva su esencia humana y el enfrentamiento de ambas cosas ocasionalmente le genera trastornos de personalidad y mentales. Internamente quiere sentir que pertenece y forjar lazos significativos con los seres humanos, pero dados algunos rasgos de su personalidad, tiende a evitar inconscientemente el contacto y la construcción de relaciones interpersonales.

Apariencia de Cóndor en el presente. Algunas de sus características actuales son obtenidas luego del desenlace de la novela, adquiriendo mayor significado y creando pequeños guiños a quienes están más involucrados con la narrativa del personaje.

Concepto

El diseño fue hecho por la artista Blazemaléfica, una muy buena amiga mía con la que vengo trabajando por alrededor de 10 años.

A la hora de trabajar el diseño, queríamos un personaje que se sintiera moderno pero al mismo tiempo tuviera toques del misticísmo andino, que fuera original, pero alienado a la cultura andina, y también se sintiera intrigante, pero sin referencias demasiado escondidas que impidan su rápida interpretación.

Vestimenta

Algunas de sus prendas, imitan la paleta de colores y formas de los cóndores andinos.

El poncho abierto con motivos andinos, mangas y cuello son un diseño libre de la artista. La chalina está hecha con fibras de lana de alpaca y algodón y posee motivos de chacana cuidadosamente bordados a mano por parte de la Gran Achachila del Aconcagüa, como regalo.

Su sweater negro, largo y holgado está hecho con una mezcla de algodón, llama y merino, mientras que la camisa gris claro que lleva debajo, es larga, de lino y tiene una cola inferior frontal triangular.
