Summary - Na Jaemin was the boy who had protected you from bullies, let you copy his homework, shared his snacks with you, and practically doted on you like a mother. It would only make sense for you to develop a crush on him though not all loves are meant to last, especially when your overbearing feelings crush themselves.
Word Count - 5.3k
A/N - Bolded phrases are song lyrics taken from Crush by Tessa Violet.
Taglist - @ukiyoneo @badwithten @yasmini24 @luvlyjaemin @jimjamjaemin @loeygotospacenow

Song: Crush by Tessa Violet. Color - Pink.

“I swear the answer for the last question was the Mandela effect,” you exclaimed, “you know, the one where you think you remember something but it’s totally different?”
Jaemin’s infectious laugh filled the interior of the car. “No no no, I think you’re mistaken,” he wagged a finger at you without taking his eyes off the road, “the question wasn’t asking about the memory of an individual, it was asking about the memory of a group, like a large mass of witnesses to a crime.”
A cold wave of despair hit you when you realized that you utterly screwed up on the largest question on your first exam of senior year. It was such an easy question yet you carelessly answered it, just wanting to go home as soon as the bell rang. That and getting to be with Jaemin, whom you’ve been crushing on since sophomore year.
You and Jaemin actually hadn’t become friends on your own terms. The two of you first met as freshmen and had to work on a group project in history together and that’s when you got his number. You didn’t talk to him for the rest of the year though. Then in sophomore year, again, you had the luck of being with him for a project, though this time it was just the two of you and it was for chemistry instead.
“Ooh, let’s do an experiment with salt,” Jaemin suggested as you gave him a questioning look, “it’s part of my nickname.”
“What? Salt? People call you salt?” You were utterly at a loss for words.
He shook his head, “no, didn’t you know? My nickname is Nana, from Na Jaemin...like N-A? Salt? Get it?”
You let out a slight wheeze when you understood what he was getting at. “Yeah, okay, we can do one with salt as long as it’s not too complicated.”
He had chosen to do an experiment on finding what method of food preservation kept produce fresh the longest, and salt was one of them. Your classmates ended up choosing your project as the most creative since they were all amused by the way Jaemin had placed pictures of himself around the section of the presentation board relating to the effectiveness of the salt treatment.
Ever since then, whenever there was a project in any of the classes you shared with Jaemin, he’d always gravitate towards you and ask you to be his partner. Eventually, after being assigned a large physics project, the two of you were deciding whose house to do the experiment at, and after sharing addresses, both of you realized that you lived only two blocks away from each other.
Just to keep things safe, it was agreed that the experiment would be done at Jaemin’s house under the supervision of his older brother who majored in something in the science field and volunteered to look after you guys and make sure no one died. The walks to his house weren’t awkward, in fact, they were quite fun and interesting considering how talkative Jaemin was. Even after your project was completed, he’d continue walking with you since your house was on the way to his.
In junior year, the two of you drifted apart as you both found your own friend groups and started hanging out with them more but in senior year, Jaemin pulled you both back together when he called you in the morning to ask if you’d like a ride to school.
“I mean, yeah sure I guess.” You had responded as you finished packing your bag. What you expected was for him to pull up in the passenger seat of his brother’s black car, the loud J-Rock music vibrating the frame of it. What you didn’t expect was for Jaemin to be the one driving the car, his older brother nowhere in sight. “Y-you can drive?!”
“Yeah, got my license over summer.” He replied nonchalantly, taking a bite of a small sandwich wrapped in Starbucks napkins. “My brother graduated early and went to Japan for grad school so he said I can use his car once I get licensed. Pretty cool, right?”
When you finally looked at him after getting into the passenger seat, you realized just how much he was starting to change. You had noticed his voice getting lower and the way his shoulders seemed to be broader but now even his face seemed to be slightly sharper and more mature. “Hey, answer me,” he said, interrupting your trance, “just because my brother’s gone doesn’t mean you can give me those sad eyes because you had a crush on him and didn’t get the chance to tell him.”
“I do not have a crush on your brother,” you began as Jaemin drove you to school, “that’s so gross, he’s like a whole five years older than me.”
“Mmhmm, I literally heard you tell June that you liked him.”
“I didn’t, I swear.” The truth is, the day he had heard you, you were telling your friend June about your crush on Jaemin before your shared trigonometry class and he had just so happened to come into the classroom early that day and overheard the tail end of it where his name was mentioned. June had covered it up by saying that you had a crush on his older brother, which you went along with since you didn’t want Jaemin to know that it was actually him that you were talking about. Hopefully one day you’d get to tell him this story and laugh about how childish you were, but for now, you kept to yourself.
From that day on, Jaemin made sure to take you to school and back once the day was over, insisting that it only makes sense since your houses are so close to each other. It’s not like you were really complaining though because it meant more time for you to be with him.
A week before homecoming, Jaemin came to pick you up in the morning as usual, his car slick from the morning dew that was on the roads. He waved at you as you came down your driveway, unlocking the door for you. “How’s my princess doing on this fine morning?” He asks once you open the door and place your bag inside.
“Tired.” You state plainly. “Nearly slept through my alarm.”
“Would you like some coffee?” He looks down at his coffee that blends in with the black coloring of the console and seats. You make a face of disgust at him, scrunching up your nose and mocking the action of vomiting. “Alright, okay, I get it.” He laughs out as you buckle yourself in.
After you were comfortably seated in Jaemin’s car, there was a calming silence as he pulled away from the curb and navigated his way out of your neighborhood. The silence was only broken when he stopped under a fresh red light, prepared to wait for a bit. “So the homecoming dance is coming up,” you let out a short hum to acknowledge him while scrolling through social media, “do you have someone that you’re planning on going with?”
You shook your head, “I have someone in mind but I don’t know if they’d want to go with me.”
“Oh, who is it?” Jaemin asks as the light turns green, signaling for him to make the pass through the intersection.
“It’s you.” Turning to look at him, you see his eyebrows furrowed and his lips pursed together. “Would you like to go with me to the homecoming dance?” The mere seconds it took him to respond to your question felt like hours but you didn’t mind, not when he looked so handsome and relaxed in the driver’s seat, one hand on the wheel, the other resting on the center console.
You make it difficult to not overthink
His hesitation was evident but eventually, he replied, “sure, I’ll go with you.”
Tumblr media
The dress you wore was a pretty shade of pink, one that complemented your skin tone nicely and Jaemin wore a matching pink button-down shirt paired with black ripped jeans which you were sure he stole from his brother’s closet. Your friends nicely complimented your outfits and asked when the two of you would be official, at which both of you replied “it’s not like that” or “I don’t like them that way” or some other variation of it.
June looked at you knowingly from the other side of the table every time that happened, knowing how badly you hoped for his words to be only a front he was putting up and that maybe, just maybe, he thought of you as more than a friend. But the little hope you had was put to rest when Yunhee, one of the girls from his friend group, came by and pulled him away, telling him that Jeno, his best friend, wanted to take group pictures together.
Jaemin didn’t return to the table until the winner of the homecoming spirit trophy was about to be announced. He shared a look of excitement with you as both of you did a drumroll on the table before Haechan, the student body president yelled out, “the seniors, class of 2018, are the winners of this year’s homecoming spirit trophy!” Jaemin jumped out of his seat and hugged you out of joy before running off to celebrate with the rest of his friends at their table.
Again, he did not return until the lights were dimmed and the music volume was raised. “Would you like to dance, m’lady?” He asked as he held his hand out for you to take. The rest of your friends let out giggles at the gesture and cooed when you placed your hand in his and followed him to the dance floor.
He let go of your hand as the two of you faced each other and started moving to the beat of ‘Let’s Fall in Love for the Night’ while mouthing the words to each other. With every line mouthed, you felt your heart swell for Jaemin because it was as if this song were written for the two of you.
“You look absolutely beautiful tonight.” He told you as the song slowed down.
“I can say the same for you too.” Your eyes met him as you smiled at him.
His smile mirrored yours with the same playful affection. “Then why don’t you?”
You weren’t even given the chance to do so when Yunhee appeared once again, placing a hand on his shoulder and turning him in the direction of where the other nominees for homecoming court were gathering. “They’re announcing the winners, come on,” she informed him as she began pulling him away, “you look good tonight though, you too, y/n, I guess.”
Yunhee had always been playing some sick passive-aggressive game with you and you never understood why. Jaemin encouraged you to just brush it off every time it happened, but you simply couldn’t, not when it has continued for three years now. You were about to open your mouth and say something back to her but you held yourself back, not wanting to sour the mood for everyone else.
Without Jaemin dancing with you and not knowing if the rest of your friends were on the dance floor, you returned to your table just as Haechan stepped out to announce the winners of the homecoming court. June came to sit next to you, occupying Jaemin’s seat as you laughed at the way her makeup was slightly smudged from when she accidentally rubbed her eye. “I’m glad I can still make you laugh.” She said as she gave you a sad smile, already having you like an open book.
The two of you became engrossed in a conversation about how hard it was to do your hair and makeup earlier, effectively drowning out the naming and cheers for the winners of the court until one name was able to make your heart stop. “Na Jaemin.” You turned around in your seat to see as Jaemin was crowned homecoming king and went to stand alongside Yunhee, who smiled at him as she donned a similar crown, making her his queen.
June took you home that night, leaving behind her own date for you as you struggled to hold back your tears, seeing Jaemin dance with another girl. “It’s just for homecoming, he probably doesn’t even like her that much.” June reassured while rubbing your back. You wanted so badly to believe her but there was just something inside you that wouldn’t allow you to do so.
Tumblr media
Homecoming passed quickly, though not quickly enough for your liking, and as much as you were glad to put some distance between that night, you weren’t as glad to be swamped with work again. You were supposed to be thinking about how Pavlov experimented with classical conditioning yet you were the one feeling classically conditioned to think about Jaemin.
He occupied your mind whenever you weren’t extremely focused on something. Everything you thought about brought you back to him. Even now, you debated on whether it would be a good idea or not to classically train him to like you.
I can’t focus on what needs to get done
Your phone buzzed from its spot on your desk, plucking you from your experimental daydream, only to send you on a rollercoaster as you read the notification on your screen.

You figured your psychology notes could wait for a bit, especially when the reason was Jaemin. With finals coming up soon and the impending doom of graduation and college, you wanted to make the most of every moment you had with him, even if it was nights spent getting McDonald’s and eating it at an elementary school playground, seated side by side at the top of the slide while looking at the stars.
“I wonder why people say ‘shooting stars’ and ‘falling like the stars’ because they can’t do both, right?” Jaemin pondered through a mouthful of french fries.
“Stars don’t fall, silly.” You remarked, truly questioning how he had such good grades in his classes yet didn’t seem to know such trivial things.
He continued staring up at the night sky before responding. “Well if they did, I think I’d be one of them.”
You looked at him, entertaining his wonderings while sipping some Sprite. “Oh? Now, why is that?”
“Because I think I’ve fallen for you.”
Your mouth opened ever so slightly out of shock and you felt as if you were frozen when he took the drink out of your hands, placing it gently behind the two of you before putting a hand on your jaw, holding your steady as he gave you your first kiss.
When he pulled away, you were still having trouble processing what just happened and left him hanging, but in a few seconds you had one hand on his shoulder, the other on his cheek as you pulled him in to kiss him for real this time. Jaemin let out a noise of surprise though he quickly recovered and his lips began moving with the shape of yours.
You immediately felt insecure from how confident he seemed, thinking that he probably already had prior experience, so you pulled away, not wanting to embarrass yourself if he thought you were a bad kisser. Both of you pulled away, slightly out of breath.
“Was I your first kiss?” He asked. You nodded in response, looking anywhere but at him. “Good, because you were mine.” Your eyebrows raised in shock and you turned to him, only for his lips to meet yours once again.
And I’m just tryna play it cool now
The two of you stayed at the playground for what could have easily been another hour talking about your futures and kissing each other. It was then that the two of you found a common college on both of your lists of possible schools and agreed to go there if both of you got in. When Jaemin dropped you off later that night, he sent you off with one last kiss and a smile, reminding you to study for your psychology final next week.
Tumblr media
The in-class reviews for the said exam could’ve easily been thrown out the window for you since all you did was stare at Jaemin from the other side of the room. June asked you and your friends something about mental maps but the only mental map you were creating was that of the house you’d live in with Jaemin someday.
But I could be your crush...throw you for a rush
Even during the final exam itself, you couldn’t help but glance over at him and think about how handsome he was. It was only when one of your friends sneezed and Jaemin looked over to say ‘bless you’ that you averted your eyes back to the papers in front of you, not wanting him to catch you in your daydreams.
And I’m pretending you ain’t on my mind
But with the wrapping up of your classes and all the finals being taken, it also signaled the end of the semester and the start of winter break, which Jaemin would be spending in Japan visiting his older brother. When he left, it felt like he took a piece of you with him. He was always on your mind and you practically glued to your phone, anxiously waiting for a message from him. To be fair, he did promise to update you at least once a day on all the fun things he did.
Hoping you’d text me
You were the first like and comment on all of his social media updates, unashamedly. The most recent being a video of him and his older brother having a snowball fight at the ski resort they were visiting.
In the video, Jaemin threw a snowball at his brother who let out a yell in surprise, his dyed-blue hair now covered in white. “Hey! Come back here!” He yelled as he knelt to the ground, gathering his own snowball to throw back at Jaemin.
Jaemin ran away to a small stack of snowballs, giggling as he grabbed another one and launched it again at his brother, only angering him further. “How about you respect your elders, huh?” His brother shouted as he threw his first snowball at Jaemin, which would’ve hit him square in the face if he didn’t turn around as fast as he did.
“No headshots, you bully!” He pouted, rubbing the spot the snowball hit, just to be hit twice more by his brother. “Hey, I’m injured!”
“Now you know how I feel playing PUBG with you, kid.” His brother shot back.
na.jaemin0813 - he put up a good fight but i think i won
ynn0018 - you definitely did. I miss you tho :’( come home soon pls
You checked the post again when he replied to your comment and read through some of the other comments, feeling jealous when you see that he also replied to the other girls who left messages though you quickly eased yourself when you say that he gave you the longest response with the most emojis.
na.jaemin0813 > ynn0018 - i miss you too 😘😘 i’ll be back sooner than you know it <3
Jaemin stayed true to his word, texting you every day, and making sure you weren’t too bored without him. He filmed his own short little vlogs and sent them to you throughout the day and did a longer video at the end of the day as he got ready for bed. You’d watch them whenever you got bored or thought of him and the days didn’t seem all that long without him physically there with you.
When Jaemin returned from Japan and the break ended, the two of you were the closest you’ve ever been. You did nearly everything together like eating lunch, studying for tests, even facetiming each other while doing homework though neither of you really spoke much.
Thanks to Jaemin being so overprepared and not wanting to live in his brother’s shadows, his early application to colleges motivated you to do the same and within the first month of the year, both of you had acceptance letters to the school where you could chase your dreams together and not have to risk doing a long-distance relationship. If fate and soulmates truly existed, you knew this would be it.
The third quarter of the school year goes by quickly, the rest of your friends receiving their acceptance letters after you and slowly announcing their future schools and plans after graduation. Things felt like they were falling into place, just the way they should be and you thought you could never be happier.
During spring break, you and Jaemin even took your senior portraits together at the local botanical garden, the sunset behind the flowers turning the sky a fiery shade of pink. “I want to see more of these sunsets with you,” Jaemin admits after you both decide you’re satisfied with how the pictures came out, “Japan has these same types of sunsets and I wish you were there to see them with me.”
“Let’s go then,” you tell him, excited as you imagine the sight of you and him traveling the world and watching many more beautiful sunsets, “after we graduate, let’s go to Japan, just the two of us. We can visit your brother too and he can even be our tour guide.”
You’re my permanent vacation
From then on, both of you vowed to ‘grow up’ a little more to show your parents that you could be trusted to travel on your own. One of the biggest things you set out to do was to get your license, which of course Jaemin is initially against but eventually comes to terms with and becomes your biggest supporter, letting your drive the two of you to school and home on days when traffic wasn’t too heavy. Of course, you couldn’t get your license in just a few months but you told yourself you’d get it as soon as you were able to.
At school, prom was drawing nearer which meant promposals were happening left and right. Jaemin hadn’t said anything about going to prom together yet or if he was going at all so you thought it would be nice to turn the tables and do something nice for him since he was the one always driving you places, buying you food, giving you gifts, and just, in general, being the best ‘boyfriend’ you could ask for.
You told June about your plans but she surprisingly warned you against it. “Wait, why shouldn’t I do this? I thought you wanted me to get with Jaemin?” You question, taken aback at how quickly your best friend seemed to have turned on you.
“I do, but I think maybe you should wait a bit.” She reasoned.
“He hasn’t said anything yet though, or even mentioned the word ‘prom’ to me, so I don’t think he’s planning on going.”
“He must have a reason, like what if he doesn’t-”
“Yeah, that’s why I’m trying to get him to go. Because if I ask him, then for sure he’ll say yes, right?” You interrupt.
June pauses. “Well, yeah, he’d probably say yes, but like, keep in mind that you guys aren’t even official so there’s no guarantee.”
You roll your eyes at her. “Whatever. I thought you were supposed to be my best friend and support me no matter what.”
“Y/n, no, that’s not what I meant-”
“Save it, I don’t want to hear it.”
You stuck your ground and went home that day, ready to think up a cheesy pick-up line and design a poster asking Jaemin to prom. The day after that, you put the first part of your plan into motion and created the poster, drawing out your message in big, bold lettering and coloring them pink.
‘If I were a star, I’d be a falling star because I’ve fallen for you. Prom?’
You waited until Thursday to buy a bouquet of flowers after school, telling Jaemin that you needed to pick something up from the store and he could just drop you off there. You also told him that your parents were cool with letting you drive one of their cars so you didn’t need a ride to school on Friday morning. The second of which was harder to convince him of, but you did it nonetheless.
And I’m not tryna be with you now
You came to school, rushing to store the flowers and poster in your locker so that Jaemin doesn’t see them. The adrenaline doesn’t leave your body until after the first period ends, your mind already overwhelmed from being a TA and having to deal with freshmen for an hour.
When you arrive at your psychology class, you excitedly tell June about your plans for the day and how you were going to ask Jaemin to prom after school gets out, which she makes a face at. “Okay, now tell me, what is going on with you and your aversion to me asking Jaemin to prom?”
“Look, I’m not against it,” she began, her eyes drifting off to somewhere else, “it’s just that…”
“What, June, what could it possibly be?” You spit, getting angry at how your own best friend didn’t want to see you happy.
Her eyes snapped back to your face. “You know what? If you’re so intent on doing it, fine. I won’t stop you. I told you that I support you and Jaemin together so I don’t get why you’re so upset.”
Just as you were about to fire back, Jaemin walked through the door with Jeno so you quickly changed your expression to smile at him before muttering to June “I’m going to ask him to prom and prove that whatever you’re hiding from me is wrong.”
The next two periods seemed to drag by, you just wanted the day to go faster so you could finally do what you’ve been waiting for. During lunch you went to your usual spot, shaded underneath a tree by the cafeteria, pulling out your homework as you wait for Jaemin when you suddenly hear a commotion happening on the other side of the building.
Out of curiosity, you stood up and walked over just enough to get a glimpse of what was happening in the large ring of students. There were two people. Jaemin and Yunhee. You watched as Jaemin held open his own poster asking Yunhee to prom and you see her nod her head before pulling him in for a hug.
Any hope you previously had was crushed.
You didn’t feel like doing anything productive for the rest of the day. Instead of staying under the protection of the large tree, you packed up your belongings and went to your last class of the day, waiting for lunch to end. It was a study hall anyway so you figured you might as well get a head start at being unproductive for an hour.
Scrolling through social media didn’t help your cause in the slightest. Jaemin’s promposal was everywhere. But he and Yunhee posted about it, everyone who had recorded the event posted it on their stories, comments were flying left and right and it was all too much.
When you got home that day, you turned off your phone for the first time since god knows when and set to working on all your assignments just to keep your mind off of him. Even the mention of his name seemed taboo now. Once you deemed that enough schoolwork had been done, you went about cleaning your room and pulled up a ‘summertime tunes’ playlist on youtube to keep your mind occupied though it seemed like the world was against you today when ‘Crush’ started playing.
Maybe if I’m busy it could keep me from you
You shut Jaemin out of your life, blocking his number and his social media accounts. Legally, you could not get your license yet so you settled for having your parents take you to school. In class you sat as far away from him as possible and ditched your lunch spot, instead opting to spend lunch sitting in your next class and you were glad that your teachers didn’t mind you intruding on their break and if they did, they were kind enough to allow you to stay.
Exactly one month after that mistake of a day, you went to prom with your group of friends after patching up your relationship with June, though there was no undoing your harsh words the same way there was no undoing your purchase of the pink prom dress thinking that you’d be going with Jaemin as your date.
Whenever you looked down, you were disgusted by the color, wanting to rip it off of you and never have anything to do with anything pink ever again. Your friends accused you of being a downer the whole night, but you couldn’t help it when you knew Jaemin was probably having the time of his life with Yunhee at their table, Jeno right at his side with his own date.
“Come on, cheer up a bit, you still have us.” June kindly told you.
“I know, it’s just,” you put your head in your hands, careful of your makeup, “this is not the way I dreamt of things going.”
June shook her head. “Well, some dreams are better left as dreams. Just wait, Jaemin will get his karma, I promise you.”
“It better come soon because I’m getting sick of seeing them together.” You nodded over to where he was dancing with Yunhee. You didn’t dare look at them, not wanting to see his stupidly handsome face and his dumb smile or the way she blushed at his compliments and the way her pink nails matched his pink tie.
You left the hotel ballroom that night vowing to yourself that you’d never speak to Na Jaemin again. Your friends fully supported you on this endeavor and your group became the tightest you’ve ever been even if it was only for the last month of your high school career. Graduation came and went, the special night was spent having your own mini party at one of your friends’ house after the ceremony and you might have even had a bit to drink.
Summer felt like an odd daydream of sorts though you were immensely grateful for the break since it allowed you to not have to see Jaemin’s face almost every day of the week. Both of you acted as if the other person didn’t exist and you hoped to keep it that way for a long time. Even when you saw him out of the corner of your eye at freshmen orientation on your college campus, you reminded yourself of the promise you made on prom night.
“Y/n, hey!” He called out to you, walking in your direction.
You looked over at him, giving him a slight smile before turning away and walking off to sit with some of the other people you met earlier while doing some of the icebreaker activities.
Sorry
Some crushes are better kept a crush.

zuko x fem!reader fluff, angst smau (it has the social media elements, but not as much as the last series)
avatar: the last airbender
summary - being zuko’s best friend is the easiest thing in the world. until he gets a girlfriend and you realize you’re in love with him
warnings / includes -  (this counts for any/all chapters) - fighting, suggestive, language, crying, alcohol, cheating, talk about injuries, making out, alluding to sex, talks about sex. you are sokka and katara’s older sister. you, mai, and zuko are seniors in college, sokka and suki are juniors, katara, aang, and toph are sophomores.
————
jet opened his eyes slowly, mai appearing in front of him. he closed his eyes again, snuggling into the pillows before opening his eyes immediately in realisation. he sat up, looking around in panic. he was naked, a thin blanket over his middle. mai was next to him, on her back, the blanket pulled up to her chest.
“shit, shit, shit,” jet muttered, getting up out of the bed. he located his clothes, slipping them on quickly while going out of the room. he went to the bathroom, groaning as he saw a bunch of hicks on his collar bone. he lifted up his shirt, seeing more hickies on his chest.
“dammit, jet. great going,” jet scolded himself. “you got a great girl and now you just fucked it up. what’s wrong with you?!”
jet washed his face quickly, running his fingers through his hair to flatten it. his then phone vibrated in his pocket. he pulled out his phone and groaned as he saw a few texts from you over the last hour and a half.
y/n <3: hey! where are you? i’m home
y/n <3: hey, are you okay? where are you?
y/n <3: okay, jet, i’m really worried now. please answer your phone.
y/n <3: i’m sorry if i’m bothering you or if you’re busy, but can you please at least just send me a text so i know you’re okay.
“fuck,” jet grumbled, turning off his phone.
he knew he should answer you, but he didn’t know what to say. ‘hey, y/n, i just slept with mai. sorry i’m a horrible boyfriend’ didn’t seem the best. jet decided to go to his friend’s house, shower, change clothes, and then go and pick up some donuts for you. he needed to figure out the best way to tell you, even though he knew it would end up with you two breaking up no matter what.
jet left mai’s house in a hurry, sneaking out to his car. he called his friends, telling them that he needed a place to shower.
“why can’t you shower at your place?” longshot asked.
“i’ll tell you later,” jet said over the phone.
“hm, alright. well, we’re not home right now. do you have the key?” smellerbee asked.
“yeah, i do. thanks, guys,” jet sighed, ending the call.
he hurried to longshot’s house, hopping in the shower and getting a change of clothes from the drawer that was filled with his own clothes, for emergencies just like these. he found some of smellerbees girlfriend’s concealer and put some on his collarbone to hide the hickies. he then went to the little donut shop near your house, picking up a dozen of your favourite donuts and returning to his place.
he went into the house from the garage door, nervously looking around for you. he found you sitting at the kitchen table, a coffee cup in hand. you had your hands on your face, your leg bouncing up and down, something you did whenever you got stressed.
you heard the door shut and took your hands off your face, your eyes wide in relief once you saw jet.
“where were you?!” you exclaimed.
“i-i spent the night at longshot’s. are you okay?” jet asked in a shaky voice, setting the box of donuts down. his heart was racing so fast, he was sure he could go into cardiac arrest.
“yeah, i’m fine, i was just worried about you,” you sighed, engulfing him into a hug.
jet’s body tensed at your touch, but relaxed soon after. he wrapped his arms around your middle, burying his face into your hair. he breathed in deeply, enjoying the scent of your shampoo. he had missed you so much last night.
“i’m sorry. my phone died a while ago and i haven’t been able to charge it,” jet apologised. he cursed at himself for lying to you, but he didn’t want to tell you now. not while you were already upset.
“it’s alright. i just… i was just worried you were off with another girl. shang used to go out a lot of night and i always thought he was just going out with his friends and well, all know how wrong i was,” you chuckled sadly.
“well, i was at my friends, okay? i love you and i would never ever do something like that,” jet said, his throat tightening up as he told the lie.
you pulled away from the hug and looked up at him with a smile. “yeah, i know. i love you, too.” you leaned up and pressed your lips onto his into a slow, passionate kiss.
jet’s arms tightened around you, pulling you impossibly closer. he furrowed his brows while kissing, savouring the taste and feel of you lips. he wasn’t sure how many more times he’d be able to kiss you before he told you the truth.
you pulled away, opening your eyes and staring into his. jet’s face got red and hot from your gaze. he averted his eyes and looked at the donuts, wanting to change the subject.
“i got you some donuts,” he said.
“ooh!” you giggled, pulling yourself away from his embrace.
he kept his arm around your waist, smiling as he saw the excitment in your eyes.
“ugh, bless the spirits for you,” you said, picking up a donut with pink icing and taking a bite. you moaned at the taste, looking at jet. “i love you so much.”
jet chuckled with a wide smile. “i love you, too, so much.”
“here, you want one?” you asked, picking up a chocolate-covered donut.  “nah, i’m good,” he shook he head.  “more for me!” you giggled, taking the box and putting it onto the kitchen table. you sat down, jet following you tentatively.
you noticed his nervous behaviour and wasted no time in asking.
“what’s wrong? sit down and talk to me,” you demanded more than suggested, pulling out a chair.
he sighed and sat down. “i just… i’ve just been thinking about a lot of things.”
“what kind of things?” you asked, your heart rate starting to escalate. your mind raced through a million different thoughts. you hoped that whatever he had to say had nothing to do with breaking up.
“um… so, i think you noticed i was a little stand-offish last night,” jet prompted.
“a-a little,” you nodded slowly.
“well, i’ve just been a little jealous of you and zuko. i know we’ve talked about this before, but it’s just been clouding my thoughts,” jet explained. “are um… are you cheating on me with zuko? i-i know that’s a stupid accusation, but you two have just been talking so much. i understand that you haven’t seen him in a while and you hanging out with him last night didn’t bother me, but… all you do is text and call him. early in the morning, while we’re hanging out, late at night. i just want to know if you have a thing with him or anything.”
you looked at him, processing every word. you put your donut down, wiping your hands off with a napkin and taking his hands into yours.
“no, i’m not cheating on you with zuko, or with anyone, for that matter. i’m sorry that i’ve been talking to him a lot recently. we’ve just been discussing a lot. see, zuko wants to break up with mai and i’ve been helping him on how to do that, but that’s no excuse. i should be paying more attention to you, especially when we’re hanging out together. i’m sorry, i didn’t realise what i was doing,” you apologised.
jet nodded, letting out a breath of relief and guilt. “it’s alright.”
“do you believe me?” you asked. you wanted to make sure he knew you were telling the truth.
jet smiled and nodded, “yes, i do. i’m sorry for getting all weird and jealous.”
“no, no, don’t apologise. we all get those doubts from time to time. the most important thing is to not let them control us,” you smiled.
jet chuckled sourly, looking down at their hands. “right.”
you pursed your lips and narrowed your eyes at him. you had a feeling there was something else bothering him.
“you know, if there’s anything else you need to tell me or ask me, go ahead. i’ll always be understanding and honest with you,” you said.
jet sighed quietly. he knew you wouldn’t be understanding with him cheating on you with mai. he wanted to tell you so bad. the words were just on the tip of his tongue. when he lifted his head to tell you, his eyes met yours and he saw the fear in your eyes. he couldn’t bring himself to tell you and ruin your day.
“no, no, there’s nothing else. i just feel stupid for doubting you,” he shrugged. he wasn’t lying about that, at least.
you nodded and leaned froward, pressing a kiss to his forehead.
“like i said, it’s okay. as long as you believe and trust me, we can make this work, and vice versa,” you said.
jet nodded and smiled, “you’re right.”
“i always am,” you giggled.
you pulled away, looking up at the clock in the kitchen. “crap, i gotta go.”
“where are ya going?” jet asked.  “katara and sokka’s to plan katara’s birthday. her birthday happens to be. the day before graduation, so we’re just mashing the two parties together,” you explained.
“oh, fun. am i invited?” jet asked. “of course you are. you’re graduating, too,” you smiled.
“are zuko and mai coming?” jet asked.
“yeah, even if mai and zuko are broken up by that time,” you sighed.
“should be fun,” jet chuckled.
“i hope so,” you chuckled with him. you got up out of your seat, slipping on your shoes and purse. “alright, i gotta go. i’ll be back soon.” “have fun!” jet smiled. “will do,” you grinned, going to him and pressing a quick kiss to his lips.
jet watched you as you leave, slumping back in his chair as soon as you were gone. he was in some deep shit.

i found the one, he changed my life (what now?) [i’d love it if we made it, pt. 3]
a/n: holy SHIT i am so happy about the way this turned out, this continues the story of college AU!tony dealing with his ex and the pressure he puts on himself to be honest with his friends. (title from “what now” by rihanna) TW: discussion of abusive relationships, mention of surgery, unhealthy/stalking behaviors, and i think that’s it but pls lmk if there’s anything else i should tag
summary: “He’s obsessed with you [...] I think he loves me, I feel certain that he loves me. But he feels some kind of way about you, and it’s creepy,” Bucky elaborated, leaving Anthony at a loss for words.
“It’s a nice day, seasonal allergies aside,” Anthony remarked.
“I would put flowers in your hair and be all cute and shit but I’m trying not to make you sneeze,” Stephen replied. “That would be unfortunate.”
Anthony laughed lightly and rested his head on Stephen’s shoulder. “You can still pet my head though, that would be nice.”
“Has anyone ever told you that you’re terrible at subtlety?” Stephen asked, beginning to play with Anthony’s hair.
“I think you did this morning,” Anthony replied. “Because you’re obnoxious.”
“Isn’t that why you love me?” Stephen teased, batting his eyelashes.
“It’s one of many reasons,” Anthony said, a soft smile on his face. “It is really nice out though.”
“Listen I know I’m always on time, but can we make an exception today?” Christine sat across from the couple, her auburn hair made extra bright by the sunlight as she pulled it out of her face. “Sorry I’m late.”
“The way that you’re literally not sorry at all makes that apology for me,” Stephen said. “Don’t worry about it though, we’ve just been hanging out. Where’s Hope?”
“Inside, for some reason,” Christine replied with a shrug.
“Probably because it’s allergy season,” Anthony commented, rolling his eyes as he sneezed again.
“He complains, despite begging me to sit outside with him,” Stephen added.
“That doesn’t sound like me, but go off I guess,” Anthony replied, picking up his phone. “Hey Rhodey, what’s up?”
“Are you running errands by chance?” Rhodey asked.
“Nope, I’m sitting outside with Steph and Christine,” Anthony said. “Why, do you need something?”
“I was just going to ask if I could send you a short list of things I wanted. Not a big deal but I’m out of cereal,” Rhodey replied.
“Text it to me anyway, I don’t think I’m going out but if I do I’ll get whatever you want,” Anthony said with a shrug.
“You’re the best Tones. By the way are you feeling better?” Rhodey asked.
“A little bit. It’s nice just sitting outside,” Anthony replied. “I dunno. I’m not thinking about it.”
“Fair enough. Enjoy the fresh air, don’t worry about the cereal though! See you later.”
“Bye Rhodey, everyone say bye!”
Christine and Stephen shouted their goodbyes as Anthony ended the call.
“You good?” Christine asked kindly.
“Yeah, sorta.” Anthony shrugged again. “I just didn’t sleep a lot last night, so that wasn’t fun. I’ve been stressed out about… things. Turns out it actually is weird to have one of your friends dating your ex.”
Christine hummed. “Tea. I thought there was something bothering you, like more than just the awkwardness. I can read you well enough by now. So what’s wrong?”
“Honestly I don’t want to tell you this exact minute because I feel like the only person who should hear this privately is Bucky. I’ll have to see how I feel after I talk with him, and if I’m okay then I’ll probably tell everyone in the group all at once. I just don’t want to repeat the same story over and over again, that’s going to wear me down,” Anthony replied. “I hope that’s okay.”
“Oh my god dude that’s fine! No stress,” Christine rushed to assure him. “You just seem sad and I want to help but I also don’t want you to make yourself feel worse, that’s not fair to you.”
Anthony breathed a sigh of relief. “Thanks Christine.”
“Don’t worry about it!” Christine said.
Anthony sneezed again, not seeing the need to reply beyond that. There was just nothing else to say.
“Let’s go inside,” Stephen suggested. “It’s getting kinda gross out anyway.”
“Oh sorry, that’s because I’m out here. I’ll leave.” Anthony jokingly moved to stand up, laughing raucously when Stephen pulled him into a hug before he even stood.
“Nooo, you’re good! You stay,” Stephen replied. “The sun is out because you’re here.”
Anthony blushed and buried his head against Stephen’s collarbone. “Oh hush.”
Christine stood up. “I may as well go inside while you two idiots keep flirting, now my allergies are acting up.”
“You’re not allergic to pollen,” Stephen remarked, standing up and offering Anthony his hand.
“I’m not allergic to most things, but I’m allergic to your bullshit,” Christine quipped. “I feel like I tell you that at least once a week.”
Anthony laughed and stood up, smiling as he wrapped his arms around Stephen’s waist.
“In all seriousness, you’re cute together,” Christine continued.
“Oh we know,” Anthony said. “How was your day Christine?”
The trio headed inside as Christine thought about how to answer.
“Honestly I don’t think anything even happened today.” she finally said. “Hope and I had breakfast together and I quite literally ran into Carol in the library. It was nice to catch up with her though because I feel like I haven’t seen her in years.”
“Now that I think about it, I also feel like I haven’t seen Carol in a long time,” Stephen said.
“We didn’t talk for too long since we were in the library, but she seems good,” Christine replied. “I think she and Val are still unpacking so they’ve been focused on that, y’know?”
“Makes sense. Props to them for moving in the middle of the year, that’s too much for me. That’s why I’m making everyone wait until the summer,” Anthony said.
“You’re not making anyone wait, you’re just making sense,” Stephen corrected him. “Moving is stressful enough, I don’t want to deal with it during exam season and neither does anyone else.”
“Can I plan your housewarming party?” Christine asked, opening the apartment door.
“Who said anything about a housewarming party?” Anthony replied.
“Wong said I could throw one once you’re all moved in,” Christine explained. “We don’t have a contract in writing yet, but that’s because—”
“Because I never said you could throw us a party!” Wong shouted from the living room. He was sitting in his usual armchair by the window, half paying attention to whatever show Bucky and an all too familiar blond were watching. “Also Bucky is here again, and he brought a friend.”
“Boyfriend,” Bucky chimed in. “We’re going to dinner soon, I just left my jacket here the other day and then I decided I’d introduce Steve to you guys. So yeah, this is my boyfriend Steve. Steve, this is Christine, Stephen, and I think you know Tony. I heard there’s a history there or something.”
Bucky was trying his best to prematurely make the best of an awkward situation, but Steve was the only one who found any humor in what he said.
The offending blond laughed and nodded, his expression unreadable in a way that made Anthony freeze. He was looking with condescension at their entwined hands, like he didn’t approve of Stephen and Anthony finally being together. With an arrogant sniff, he got off his high horse long enough to respond. “I know him and Stephen, actually. You both look good.”
“Thanks,” Stephen replied, his teeth bared in a forced, blatantly hostile grin.
Anthony rubbed at his eyes, tearing up from the situation and his allergies. “Yeah good to see you too, if you’ll excuse me I need to take some allergy medication.” He couldn’t run and hide in the bathroom fast enough, and he knew everyone in the room could see him trembling.
Stephen let his genuine emotion break through his façade for a moment, frowning as he watched Anthony retreat. His steely look of disapproval returned a minute later as he sat down in the kitchen, eavesdropping on the group’s conversation.
“Mind if I get some water? I didn’t get to hydrate as much today,” Steve asked.
Stephen, pretending to be busy, glared at his phone like he was reading a poorly worded email. He paid little attention to the blond as he bumbled around the kitchen, following Wong’s directions on where to find cups and the Brita and other shit.
“So you’ve finally come back to the city, hm? Tony used to tell me about how you both grew up here and how New York never left you,” Steve asked Stephen. He was making an extremely poor attempt to sound friendly, but all he did was make the med student extremely uncomfortable.
Stephen gave a forced laugh. “Yeah, they couldn’t keep me away.”
“Seems like you couldn’t keep yourself away from Tony either, not with the amount of times he cheated on me with you,” Steve remarked.
“Listen, we both know that’s not true and I barely want to give you the time of day. You know damn well he never cheated on you and I don’t have to justify myself to you. After all, you were the cheater. If you think I’m just going to roll over in my own apartment and let you run your mouth like that, especially knowing how badly you treated my Anthony, then you’ve got another thing coming,” Stephen snapped. “Do I make myself clear?”
“Clearly anyone who thinks I’m aggressive and controlling hasn’t met you,” Steve said, closing the fridge and leaving Stephen fuming in the kitchen.
After 15 minutes of ignoring some small talk, Stephen had had enough. Anthony was still hiding somewhere and Stephen was just over Steve being in his apartment. He was trying not to be too angry, because Bucky didn’t know about how Steve and Anthony’s breakup or relationship went. Stephen couldn’t, and didn’t, blame him.
But Steve was a coward and a jerk, and Stephen wouldn’t touch him with an 11 foot pole. Stephen wouldn’t even get close to him to shove him headfirst out the door, actually.
“I’m gonna be in my room studying if you guys need anything, enjoy your dinner Bucky!” He said, waving at his friends in the living room and pointedly ignoring Steve.
“Thanks man! If you want to hang out later, maybe on a double date or something—”
“Oh I’d love that!” Steve chimed in, unprovoked and uninvited.
“Depends on what Ant’s doing, I know I’m pretty busy tonight but if he wants to go out then we’ll let you know,” Stephen said firmly. He heard the bathroom door open behind him and Anthony’s light footsteps in the hall.
“I think I’ll just run to the bathroom before we leave, if that’s alright?” Steve asked.
“Are you asking me?” Stephen replied, ignoring him and heading in the direction of his bedroom. “Don’t you dare patronize me.”
Anthony was standing nervously outside Stephen’s room, staring at the floor. He looked horrified and meek, pressing his back against the wall and hoping he’d disappear out of Steve’s gaze.
But of course he wasn’t that lucky. Sometimes it felt like he’d never truly get away from the way Steve used to look at him and was apparently still looking at him.
Anthony looked up as Stephen gently tapped his shoulder. “Hey… you alright?”
He forced himself to nod, tears still pooling in his eyes from either anxiety or allergies. Maybe both. “Yeah, I guess. It’s just—”
“Oh there you are Tony! Bucky and I are leaving, so I thought I’d say goodbye,” Steve said, lingering in the doorway to the bathroom. “Maybe we could go for a double date later? If you’re allowed to, that is. I always said Strange was a controlling downgrade, didn’t I?”
“Good thing I never listened when you said that, because I’m much happier now,” Anthony muttered.
“Aww, don’t be a bad sport! It’ll be just like the glory days.” Steve appeared to be ignoring his current relationship to flirt with Anthony, stepping out of the doorway and leaning closer (read: too close for comfort) to him.
“I don’t know about that,” Anthony said, his voice taut. “I wouldn’t want to be around you for much longer. Seeing you is already making me think about our… could you call it a relationship?”
“You’re so funny Tony, just as funny as I remember.” Steve sounded like a content house cat as he quite literally purred at Tony. “I miss that humor. I just miss you.”
“I can’t say the feeling is mutual.”
++++
“Not to state the obvious, but I hate that guy,” Stephen muttered, storming into the kitchen a few hours later.
“Is Ant okay?” Wong hadn’t moved from his seat in the living room, except for the fact that he was laying across the armchair sideways and there were three more mystery novels next to him.
“He’s sleeping. Even before all of that shit went down,” Stephen began, gesturing to the air in front of him, “We were outside for long enough that even if he won’t admit it, his allergies are bothering him.”
“How long were you outside for before I came to sit with you guys?” Christine asked.
“Maybe 90 minutes? Long enough to be considered too long,” Stephen replied. “It doesn’t matter. Did you guys eat yet?”
“No, we were waiting on you and Pepper. She said she’d be back by 7,” Christine said.
“What do you want? I’m open to suggestions,” Stephen asked. “I kinda want to make pasta but I know I’m not good enough at it so it wouldn’t make Anthony happy.”
“Don’t be stupid, Stephen. It absolutely would, and you know that,” Christine scolded him. “Do whatever you feel like! And I think pasta sounds nice.”
Stephen nodded. “Fair enough. I’m making ravioli and none of you can stop me. We deserve it.”
“Oh no Stephen don’t do that, don’t make something that you like to cook and that we all like to eat,” Wong teased. “Christine, he’s too powerful, we have to stop him.”
Stephen humorously rolled his eyes. “Anthony is the one who gave me a good recipe, so technically we all have him to thank for enabling me. Except not right now. Let him sleep.”
++++
“Oh by the way, I told Bucky that I’d get coffee with him later and we’re going to talk about whatever the hell happened this weekend,” Anthony said. “Do you want me to bring you back anything while I’m out?”
“Hmm… I don’t think so.” Stephen drew a heart on the back of Anthony’s hand with his thumb, something he noticed himself doing a lot.
Anthony always rewarded him for the gesture with the smallest, shyest smile that Stephen thought was the most adorable thing ever. “Text me if you change your mind, yeah?”
“Okay, I will.” Stephen smiled back at him, lovingly brushing Anthony’s hair out of his face. “Also if I send you a list will you help me decide on a movie for tonight?”
“Not sure you’re asking the right person, but sure,” Anthony replied.
“That’s subjective. I think I’m asking the right person,” Stephen said. “You’ve never steered me wrong before.”
“I hope I never do.” Anthony pressed a soft, sweet kiss to Stephen’s lips. “But knowing you, you’ll definitely change your mind about wanting a tea or something.”
“If I do, I’ll tell you,” Stephen replied, smiling into the kiss. “Promise. Have a good day, and good luck later.”
“I think I’m going to need it,” Anthony said with a little nervous laugh.
“Would a kiss help your luck?” Stephen couldn’t keep a neutral face. “I never imagined myself saying that. Or getting to kiss you.”
“Stop it, don’t make me blush this early in the day,” Anthony replied. “In all seriousness, I love you. And your kisses are magical, who’s to say they aren’t lucky?”
++++
Anthony couldn’t say whether or not he felt lucky later that day, because the only thing he felt was nervous. Bucky looked just as nervous and sheepish as Anthony did, and his internal monologue had already switched to guilt. They exchanged small talk and pleasantries while they waited for their coffee, their mutual discomfort becoming more and more tangible by the minute.
Most people joked that Anthony talked to hear the sound of his own voice, but today he was so nervous he couldn’t hear himself think. He didn’t know what to say or even where to start. Thankfully, Bucky blurted out a question before Anthony thought about how to start the conversation.
“How long were you two together?”
“Two and a half years, give or take. And I didn’t cheat on him with Stephen.”
“I didn’t think so. I wasn’t even going to ask about that.” Bucky smiled, trying to somehow calm Anthony down with his expression. “Who broke it off?”
“Me. Sometimes I feel like I did it a lot later than I should have, honestly.” Anthony shrugged. “I wasn’t ever happy in that relationship. I wanted to be, and I did everything I could to make it work even at my own expense, but eventually I had to end it. I’m happier now, but sometimes I still… I shouldn’t say any of this to you, not if you’re happy.”
“You know what bothers me, though?”
Anthony wasn’t expecting that. “What’s up?”
“I don’t think he’s over you. And that doesn’t bother me in a jealous sense, I’m not like that, but I feel almost used. Especially after this weekend,” Bucky said.
“What do you mean?” That worried Anthony for a lot of reasons, and he couldn’t decide which one was the most important.
“Tony, he's obsessed with you. The entire time we were driving Sunday night he wouldn’t stop talking about you, to the point where it was weird. I started to feel like he used me to see you,” Bucky replied. “One time I showed him a group picture, this was like six months ago, from that time we went out ice skating and ever since then he’s been pestering me about you. I don’t even think it has anything to do with me, if that makes sense.”
“I’m not following,” Anthony admitted. “Not entirely, anyway.”
“I think he loves me, I feel certain that he loves me. But he feels some kind of way about you, and it’s creepy,” Bucky said. “Now as I said it’s not jealousy, I just think it’s a bit disturbing that he’s so hung up on you.”
Anthony nodded slowly. “Yeah, I don’t like that. He didn’t want me to dump him but I had to, there’s no two ways about it. What happened Sunday?”
“We had a disagreement. I told him I felt used and he wasn’t happy about that, but he didn’t deny it either,” Bucky replied. “I was hoping he’d drop the whole thing but I don’t think he’s going to. I don’t think he’s going to ever get over you, honestly.”
“Damn. I’m sorry you had to deal with all of that.” Anthony nervously ran a hand through his hair, fighting the urge to pull at it. “Um… yeah I don’t really know what to think or what to say.”
“Neither do I,” Bucky admitted. “I really want to try things out with him and see how they continue, but I also don’t think he’s going to change. Now that he’s actually seen you, I feel like it’s only going to be more awkward.”
“Oh about that, I’m sorry I didn’t want to go out the other day,” Anthony said. “I was going to try and make myself power through it, but… just being around him for however long you guys were in the apartment was way too much. I got really anxious and just hid in Stephen’s room. And then, on an unrelated note, I ended up sleeping for 14 hours or something.”
“I’m sorry if I was forceful. I didn’t know how to subtly ask if he was making you uncomfortable in the moment, but I could see it,” Bucky replied. “I don’t blame you.”
Anthony shrugged. “Dude I’m at a loss, generally speaking. I don’t know what to say about everything you just told me, but honestly I’m feeling a little sick.”
“Are you going to see Stephen? I’m meeting Christine, so if you want I’ll walk with you,” Bucky offered.
Anthony nodded. “Sure.”
“I really am sorry, Tony. For everything this weekend, and if something I said upset you after your wisdom tooth surgery,” Bucky said.
“It’s not your fault. I’ve been stressing about how to tell everyone about that relationship for too long and the way I felt when I woke up just reminded me of something I still don’t really want to talk about,” Anthony replied. “There’s a lot I’m holding back, even from you, but I’m just not ready to go into all of that yet.”
“I won’t be upset if you tell me,” Bucky tried to comfort him.
“It’s less about that and more the fact that I don’t want to even think about it. I don’t want to think about him,” Anthony said. “I don’t want to hear his voice, or see him, or even hear about him, if I’m being honest. And I feel bad, because I know you love him, but—”
“But you’re my friend, and I care about you. Plus you’re way too polite to be direct when something or someone upsets you and I think that does more harm than good. You just end up keeping everything to yourself, and you don’t have to,” Bucky interrupted. “You don’t have to be a closed book all the time.”
Anthony smiled at that. “Stephen’s said that to me before. I don’t know why, but I like that phrasing. I’m not one to open up in general, even though I trust everyone in our friend group, but this feels like it’s too much to get into the open right now. Someday I’ll be ready, but not today. It doesn’t help that this weekend was honestly too soon.”
“That’s fair man,” Bucky replied. “I don’t have to tell you that Stephen loves the shit out of you, and you deserve that.”
“I could go on and on about Steph probably endlessly,” Anthony said, hiding his face as he blushed.
“Everyone knows that, even people who have never met either of you know that!” Bucky teased. “But honestly, are you okay?”
Anthony shrugged. “Yes and no. I just need time.”
“I understand. And I am really, really sorry about this weekend,” Bucky replied. “Forgive me?”
Anthony shook his head. “Do I need to? It’s not your fault.”
“I know it’s not, but still… I’m sorry. I hope that means something, at least.”

find the strength, find the melody pt. 5
this is still a working title. I just can’t decide if it fits or not, so feel free to offer any suggestions! once I finish this fic I’m going to go back and reblog it in it’s entirety and I promise I will finalize and update the title for all the reblogs to make it easier to find in the future. I’m probably also going to post the completed fic to AO3, possibly with some slight editing updates. I’ll add the link once that’s active.
also, I want you all to know that I almost missed a typo in this chapter that would have had Julie biting her nip instead of her lip so you’re welcome for that.
also also, this chapter solidified my decision to write this fic from Luke’s perspective once I finish Julie’s. my god, the things happening in this boy’s head during this scene had me taking a bath and calling my husband for cuddles at 2pm. HE’S JUST TOO SOFT. Reggie and Alex will be more prominent in his story. their characters are so fun to write, but harder to work into Julie’s story until it’s closer to the end.
to be fully honest, I’m not entirely happy with the cut-off on this chapter, but I felt like y'all deserved all 3,084 words after a 6 day hiatus so I had to pick a slightly more awkward end spot. hope it makes up for taking so long to update!

Julie didn’t expect to see Luke the next day. When her alarm went off at 6:45 that morning, she woke up with a start, heart racing as memories of last night flooded back. She had been ready to defend herself and Luke to her father, but it had been business as usual in the Molina household. Her father had gotten up like normal and gone about his morning without any hiccups from a very cute, unexpected teenage boy showing up. Julie could hear him leaving for work now, calling up a loving goodbye to her in between shouts at Carlos to hurry his butt into the car. When she peeked out of her window at the studio it looked exactly the same as it always did, empty and still. For a moment, she was sure that she dreamed the entire thing.
Something felt different in her soul though. Realigned, like a part of her she didn’t realize was missing had finally made its way back home. Everything in her body felt lighter as she got dressed and floated down the stairs to grab her breakfast. She was riding high on cloud nine, humming actually humming! under her breath as she moved around the kitchen, when a loud rap at the back door startled her. Flynn would have just walked in so it couldn’t be her. Her dad, too, would have simply run inside if he had forgotten something. It wasn’t until she was already reaching for the door handle that she recognized the electricity sparking in the air. She opened the door to a now familiar pair of puppy dog eyes waiting on the other side.
“I thought I told you to leave by 6:30 so my dad wouldn’t see you.”
Julie tried to make her voice snappy, but it was so hard when he was standing there, bobbing and weaving in the early morning sunshine, eyes shining, lips curved into the sweetest smile. He took her words in stride. His smile stretched as his head dipped with a charming amount of bashfulness. She realized with a jolt that he had been doing that for days now, ever since she ran into him after her meeting with Ms. Harrison. Just rolling right through every punch she threw at him like it was nothing. Her walls slipped a little lower.
“I thought I could make you breakfast. You know, as a thank you for last night.”
Her brain short circuited. Luke Patterson...wanted to...make her breakfast? She had to turn the words over in her mind a few times before they began to make sense. Julie studied him for a moment, noticing that he seemed much more like his normal confident self this morning. Gone was the unsteady boy that had stood in her mom’s studio doorway last night. Still, one shoulder was hitched a little higher than the other, his fingers flexing against the backpack strap slung over it. His face was open and eager, but she could detect the hint of nervousness that he was trying to cover up. She caught a faint whiff of jasmine as a slight breeze blew past them and immediately zeroed in on the damp wisps of hair curling around his neck. The thought of Luke in her shower, using her soap was almost her undoing. Desperately trying to get a hold on the situation, she leaned against the open doorway, crossing her arms across her chest in what she hoped was a nonchalant movement.
“I thought we were going to pretend last night didn’t happen.”
His smile faltered a little bit, his free hand flying up to scratch at the back of his neck. His bouncing shifted to rocking, and Julie felt the change in his demeanor like a punch to her gut.
“Yeah...okay...I mean if that’s what you want. I’ll uh, see you around, Molina.”
His voice lacked its typical singsong quality, rejection flattening the lilt she had become accustomed to. Pain bloomed in Julie’s chest, familiar and foreign all at the same time. It wasn’t like the pain she was used to, wasn’t connected to her mom or her music. This pain was all about Luke and the fact that she had just hurt him for no reason at all. Shame rolled through her stomach in a nauseous wave. Luke was already adjusting the bag higher on his shoulder, turning away from her, body language all but screaming “leave me alone”. It didn’t stop her from reaching out and laying a hand against his shoulder.
“Luke.”
His name was a plea and an apology rolled into one. She felt the ripple of his muscles as his body reacted to it, dropping her hand only when he turned to face her. Their eyes caught, the air sparking between them.
“What were you going to make?”
His brow furrowed in confusion, his eyes never leaving hers. She knew she had to do better, but God, it was hard to face your feelings after bottling them up for so long.
“For breakfast. I usually just grab a Pop-Tart to eat on my walk to school. Do you actually cook every morning?”
Luke was still staring. Julie bit her lip, the tail end of a nervous giggle that she couldn’t quite suppress all the way slipping out. The sound seemed to jolt him out of whatever trance he was in. In two seconds, he was back to bouncing on the balls of his feet, arms loose at his sides once more.
“Yeah, I do.”
The shy smile on his lips did something to Julie’s insides that she wasn’t willing to investigate just yet.
“Usually eggs, but sometimes waffles or pancakes on the weekends. Bacon if the boys are coming over. It’s the most important meal of the day, ya know.”
His eyes were bright again, practically glowing like they usually did when he started talking about something he was passionate about. Julie had only ever seen him like this when he was going off on another music related rant in class. Who knew breakfast foods could be so inspiring?
“Well, that sounds a lot better than strawberry Pop-Tarts.”
She turned, leaving the door open as she started to walk back towards the kitchen. She could hear Luke hesitate in the doorway, but all it took was one look over her shoulder and he was rushing in after her, quietly closing the door in his wake. They walked to the kitchen in silence, Julie trying to figure out what the hell was happening in her head and heart the entire time.
The instant Luke entered the kitchen it was like she was seeing a completely different side of him. He was quick and sure with all of his movements, taking only a few minutes to find everything he needed without even asking her for guidance. The muscles of his forearm rippled as he whisked the eggs together, the flick of his wrist just as mesmerizing now as when he played guitar. His confidence on stage had always been awe-inspiring, the way he moved and the energy he gave off undeniably cool and sure, never an ounce of doubt that he was anything other than amazing. It was a way for him to prove he was the best of the best, show that he had fully earned the title of “Rockstar”.
This moment in her sunny kitchen showed a quieter confidence. Nothing flashy or showy, just Luke doing something he clearly enjoyed for no other reason than the fact that he liked it. The rock god attitude had always been surface-level hot, sure, but this kind of domestic comfortability was an entirely new level of attractive. Julie felt her mouth go dry, the tips of her ears growing warm the longer she watched him. He hummed under his breath, the sound reverberating in her soul and sending little shivers up and down her spine. It wasn’t until he was sliding a plate of steaming scrambled eggs and toast in front of her that she finally recognized the melody. Her breath caught and he met her eyes with a gentle expression.
“I told you already, it’s an incredible song.”
He grabbed his own plate and lowered himself into the chair next to hers at the bar. He immediately began shoveling eggs in his mouth. Julie took a few bites of her own food, pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Then an ugly thought took over her brain. She dropped her fork, turning to stare at Luke with a dark intensity she couldn’t control.
“Did you...did you play my mom’s song?”
She couldn’t keep the betrayal out of her voice. It echoed in the room, low and hollow, like the sound of tomb closing. Luke’s own fork fell with a clatter.
“Julie, no.”
His voice was just as desperate, filled with pain and apology.
“I swear to you, no. I wouldn’t do that. I knew what it was as soon as I found it. I couldn’t hurt you like that. I never even showed it to Reggie or Alex.”
She believed him. The look on his face, the tone of his voice, proved to her that he wasn’t lying. Then, his cheeks turned a very light pink.
“I just...sometimes...I would read it. Not around the guys.”
He was quick to add that part in there, like he was assuring her he could protect the things that were important to her. Like he was promising to protect her. She could tell he was a little uncomfortable with the revelation, but he pushed through anyway.
“Just like...at night before bed...or when I was stuck on a song and needed some inspiration.”
His eyes rose to meet hers, some tender emotion she couldn’t identify lurking in their oceanic depths.
“I meant it when I said you’re an incredible songwriter. Sometimes...”
His cheeks darkened, ears flaming red to match.
“Sometimes...it was almost like I could hear you playing it.”
The last part was said so quietly she almost missed it. She felt her face go slack. Who was this guy and what had he done with the normal, cocky Lucas Patterson? The gentleness of his words, the way his eyes were drilling into hers like he could see all the way down to the depths of her soul, had her blinking against the sudden emotion clogging her throat.
“Last night was the first time I ever played it.”
The confession sprung from her lips without second thought. She had to do something, anything to break whatever tension seemed to be thickening between them with each passing second. Luke tilted his head, another warm smile gracing his lips.
“You were even more amazing than I could have ever dreamed. You’re like a human wrecking ball, Julie. It’s insane how talented you are.”
So much for breaking the tension. Julie sucked in a breath, her heart stuttering in her chest. It was only then that she realized how close their bodies had become, each one leaning farther into the other as their conversation went on. There were only inches between them now, Luke’s lyrical voice curling into her ear with a delicious intimacy she couldn’t help but crave. If she got any closer to him their foreheads would touch, their nose would brush, their lips would...
And just like that she was on the ground, her backside stinging from slamming into the hardwood so abruptly. Luke blinked down at her, eyes still swimming with that damnable affection, but also tinged with confusion. In her desperate attempt to bail, she must have leaned too far back, falling off the barstool before she could even realize what would happen. She shook her head to clear the spell Luke had been spinning before looking past him to the clock on the oven.
“We should probably leave for school now unless we want to be late.”
She ignored the breathy way her voice came out, pushing herself to a standing position. Without making eye contact, she wove her way around Luke. He was like a block of ice in his chair, still poised to lean into her completely. She scooped up their half-eaten breakfasts, plopping them loudly into the sink before slipping her arms through her backpack straps. Nowhere left to hide, she turned back towards the brunette boy.
He stared at her for a long moment, the hot frustration in his gaze burning through her and making her want to squirm. For a second, she thought he was going to push it, but then his eyes closed for what felt like an eternity. When they opened again, he seemed resigned. She could detect just a hint of his previous fiery intensity, the rest of it shrouded behind an almost forlorn veil of acceptance.
“If that’s what you want.”
There was a deeper meaning to his words that Julie wasn’t prepared for. Her breathing faltered, the silence between them heavy with the things he was leaving unsaid. She almost gave in. Almost asked him just what, exactly, he wanted right now. But she didn’t need to ask him because she could read it plain on his face. It terrified her. And Julie had become an expert at avoiding things that scared her in this past year. So, instead, she gave him a tight nod and zipped out the front door to wait for him outside.
In the clear sunshine of another beautiful LA day, she was finally able to breathe again. Out here, away from the thick tension of the kitchen, it was easier to tell herself Luke was just being nice. Easier to pretend their little moment inside was just some friendly banter. Easier to ignore the implications of Luke’s serious words and caring tone. She gulped in deep breaths, willing her head and heart to cool down. She heard the click of the door latching shut behind her, turned to see Luke standing there, a small pout on his lips, face entirely unrepentant. Good lord she was in trouble. Then a realization hit. She clung to it, desperately hoping it would get them back on a more neutral page, pull them out of whatever had been simmering between them all morning.
“Where’s your car? I know you didn’t drive over here last night.”
Luke’s face changed immediately, chagrin taking over every feature. His mouth opened and closed a few times before he shoved his hands in the front of his jeans.
“I uh...I only live a few houses away from you...”
Now it was Julie’s turn to gape like a fish. Luke Patterson was her neighbor? Since when?
“My parents...we moved to the neighborhood a couple years ago. I...uhm well...”
His hand rose again to scratch at his neck, and she had never wanted to grab at him more than in this moment. That movement was slowly beginning to drive her crazy. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and blurted it out in one garbled sentence.
“Iusedtohidearoundthecornerandlistentoyouandyourmomplayinthestudiopleasedon’thateme.”
Julie was so stunned she nearly tumbled off the top step as she staggered backwards. Only Luke’s quick reflexes saved her from falling flat on her back for the second time that morning. His eyes darted around her face, clearly trying to figure out if she was about to lose it on him or not. Julie struggled to process the info dump she had gotten from Luke in the last couple of days. All of her preconceived notions were slowly being proven wrong and she wasn’t entirely sure how to deal with that. Life was easier when Luke was just another selfish, swaggering upperclassman. How long had she been in his orbit? Years it sounded like. The realization was staggering.
“You...you listened to us play? Why?”
Luke still had his hands wrapped around her wrists. Julie couldn’t find it in her to break the connection. Her voice came out more broken than she intended, memories of sunlit days singing with her mom invading her mind. Luke remembered those days too?
“Haven’t you been listening?”
His voice was strained, his eyes boring into hers like he was trying to telepathically force her to understand. His fingers flexed against her skin, the movement causing a flurry of butterflies to erupt in her stomach.
“You’re a star, Julie Molina. I couldn’t help getting sucked into your orbit.”
Julie felt her eyelids flutter, her chest squeezing like it was going to burst from the rapid inhale/exhale she couldn’t seem to calm. He said her name like a prayer, his lips turning it into something holy and sacred. She was drowning in Luke’s gaze, a riot of emotions swirling around in her brain. Somehow, because he was Luke and apparently he knew her better than she ever expected him to, he could tell that his declaration had gone a little too far. Easing back, he released his hold and rocked away from her just a bit to give her the space she so desperately needed. His eyes were still impossibly soft, bordering on adoration as he watched her come to terms with his bold announcement. Finally, once Julie was pretty sure she had come back down to Earth, he jogged down the front steps.
“We can still drive if you want to, but I think it’s a pretty nice morning for a walk if you’re up for it.”
“Okay.”
It felt like the smallest possible acceptance she could offer him, but the way Luke lit up in response made her want to melt. Head still swimming, she made her way down the steps on shaky baby deer legs. Luke didn’t push, just fell in step with her as easy as pie. Every once in a while, his fingers would brush against her hand, and it took every scrap of will power to keep herself from just reaching out and linking their hands together.
They passed a house bursting with flowers out front. Julie’s eyes caught on an explosion of bright red in the corner of the yard. Dahlias. Her mother’s favorite. It felt like a sign, and another part of Julie’s soul slipped quietly back into place. The next time Luke’s hand knocked against hers she shyly allowed their fingers to tangle. She didn’t need to look to see the smile break out on his face. She could feel the warmth of it filling the air around her like her own personal sun. He squeezed just once. Just enough to acknowledge the move for what it was. She didn’t let go until the school appeared in the distance.

“Harry, oh my god that was so awkward. I hated that, it will replay in my head for the next week.” You groaned flopping on his bed. “I am a bad bitch I’m fine, I’m fine” you reminded yourself.
He laughed at you and sat next to you, “You are a bad bitch. And yes that was painfully awkward, I’m so sorry.”
“Thanks for pulling me away though. Not gonna lie, I felt like Allana was plotting something in her head when she saw me. Did you get any vibe that she didn’t seem happy?” You asked, nervous.
“Eh wouldn’t be surprised if she wasn’t happy, she bosses Tom around. She tried to use me as her photographer once, but I was busy and couldn’t, but she somehow made Tom clear my schedule so that I could take pictures of her. I do not trust her in all honesty, so her plotting something wouldn’t be new..” You gasped at the story.
“Dang I will not get in her way then…” Harry laughed and asked, “What do you feel like eating tonight, love?”
“Uhmmm, oh I haven’t had nandos since the last time I was here.” You said and he nodded.
-
After the Nandos was dropped off at the house you all gathered around the table.
“I think I can make food like Nandos.” Harrison said and everyone started laughing, “Hey I seriously think I can. Just watch.”
“I think you can too, Harrison, I’ll be your sous chef if you want.” He smiled at your encouragement and stuck his tongue out at everyone else and Allana rolled her eyes. Oof. “Tommy, do you have spinach? I have a photoshoot tomorrow because one of the models cancelled. I can’t eat the side dishes. I’ll make myself a salad or something.” Allana said.
Harry scoffed and joked, “We don’t have rabbit food here, love.” Tuwaine and Harrison laughed, but you felt bad they were ganging up on her.
“Hey don’t make fun of her. It’s harder for us girls to stay fit whereas you boys can eat like shit and still be fit.” You said to the boys and Allana looked at you a bit surprised and pleased, “Allana, I think I saw some lettuce in the fridge. I can go grab it for you and a bowl. Gotta start getting used to the things around here anyway.” You smiled at her.
Her expression went back to being unimpressed, “Uhm no thanks. I’ll just go eat at home, I have to leave in a bit anyway.”  She said and pushed the utensils away.
“Darling, you need to eat a little something, you haven’t eaten one thing since you’ve gotten here.” Tom said. Your heart clenched a bit when he called her darling.
“Tommy, god, I said I’d eat later. Don’t you ever listen?” She said everyone stared in silence until Harrison broke it, “Someone’s a little hangry…”
“Harrison shut up!” Tom said snapping his head toward Haz.
Allana was turning red, “That’s it! I’m tired of your friends treating me like this. I’m leaving, Tommy, will you come with me?” Tom got up and glared at Harrison as he helped Allana out.
“As if she doesn’t treat us badly.” Tuwaine said, rolling his eyes, Harry and Harrison nodding in response.
“Ok, but I still felt bad for her. That was a little uncalled for guys.” You said continuing to eat.
“Y/n, she literally shot you down when you were trying to be helpful.” Harrison stated.
“Ok true, but I didn’t mind, she seemed to mind when you all ganged up on her.” The boys nodded.
“Not even 3 hours here and you’re already being our mother.” Harry said laughing.
“Oh shut up, you boys love me. I’m just using the bad bitch energy Harry gave me earlier.” You all laughed.
After dinner you and the boys watched funny videos on Harry’s laptop and then headed your separate ways to go to sleep. You did your night routine and pulled on pj shorts and tank top since the boys put the heater on.
You stirred in bed trying to sleep, but the jet lag got the best of you and you decided to put your clothes in the drawers and closet. Before starting to clean you decided to grab a snack and water.
While waiting for the popcorn to finish popping in the microwave you heard the front door unlock and a tired looking Tom walked in.
“Tom? Oh my god why’re you getting home now it’s 2 am, you should’ve stayed with Allana. It’s so late!”
“Oh, y/n? And we were talking then she kicked me out, something about being alone in bed is better for her aura the night before a photoshoot. Why’re you up?” Tom stammered and you scoffed at the story.
“Jet lag. I decided to organize my room, but also wanted a snack.” He nodded sitting in front of you at the counter, “Why don’t you go to sleep now you look like shit.” You joked. He put his hand over his heart pretending to be hurt.
“Tsss ouch, y/n, but I kinda wanted to talk to you. You know, catch up.” He said looking at you with his head resting on his hand now. Your heart sped up and sighed trying to stay calm.
“Alright, what do you wanna know?” You pulled the popcorn out of the microwave and set it between you and Tom. He started eating with you.
“How’re you and Mr. Gavin Leatherwood?” His question surprised you because one; that was a very straightforward question and two; you never confirmed anything/ went public with Gavin except for paps photos of you two holding hands and only Zendaya, your family, and Harry knew and swore not to tell Tom.
“Uhm we mutually broke up two weeks ago...” You said looking up at Tom fiddling with your fingers. Tom’s eyes widened a bit and he tried to hide his joy,
“Oh I’m sorry about that y/n.” he said genuinely, “I always thought there was something off about him.” You rolled your eyes getting annoyed thinking back to the past,
“Tom nothing was wrong with him. Like I said it was a mutual break up. He’s a sweet guy, you just never gave him a chance.” You rolled your eyes. He put his arms up in defense,
“Sorry, love, chill. I was trying to make you feel better by implying you deserved better.” You scoffed knowing he was only being half truthful.
“Mhm sure, we both know that you just hated him.” Tom looked at the bowl of popcorn in defeat.
“Thanks for sticking up for Allana by the way. I know she doesn’t seem like the nicest person at first, but when you get to know her she’s a sweetheart.”
“Oh ya I bet.” You joked.
“What? ‘Not gonna give her a chance’, love?” He mocked your American accent  and put air quotes in when he said that. You gave him a displeased look,
“Really, Tom? Really? Are seriously going to say that to me when you never stood up for Gavin and was actually the meanest to him?”
“Oh my god,” he groaned, “it was a joke, love. I see you still get butt hurt easily.” He said putting his head in his hands. That was it,
“Ok good catching up with you Tom. Good night, asshole.” You took the popcorn and water to your room.
Tom sat there with his eyes never leaving your beautiful figure. He groaned, beating himself up mentally for fucking things up and for checking you out.
-
You woke up around 7 a.m. groaning because jet lag got to you really bad. You changed into leggings and a crop top ready to go on a light jog knowing you wouldn’t go back to sleep.
When you walked down you saw that Tom fell asleep on the couch. Your heart melted at the sight, but you tried to ignore how cute and cuddly he looked. You were about to walk out, but gave in and decided to put a blanket over Tom.
“Oh mornin’ y/n, you’re up early,” You heard Harrison as he walked down in shorts and a tshit-shirt, “Going on a run too?”
“Yup, light one though. I’ve got a lot of work to do today.” You said putting your hair up in a ponytail.
“Sick, I’ll run with you for a bit then.” You smiled and waited outside for him.
When you started running it was a little silent until he spoke, “So did you put that blanket over Tom?”
“Maybe” you chuckled a bit, it was quiet again.
“Fuck it I’m just gonna say it,” you raised your eyebrow at him, “I shouldn’t be saying thihs, but he hasn’t gotten over you. I think Allana is here just to keep him on his toes. And plus he-”
“Sorry, Harrison, can we not talk about this now? I’m still trying to forget about my past with him since I’m living in his house and all.” You said breathing hard.
“You know you don’t have to do that. As his best friend I know he’d hate for you to pretend like nothing ever happened between you two.”
“Alright then, but if something bad happens because of past events I’m blaming you.” You said jokingly and Harrison laughed, “So what are all the things you need to catch me up on, I’ll let you talk now, I already can’t breathe.” Harrison laughed and started updating you on everything.
-
“Wait are you serious? That sounds terrible.” You said, Harrison was telling you how he face planted when he was trying to impress a girl.
“Oh my god it was so embarrassing, she was so quiet when she helped me up and took her number out of my phone!” You started dying of laughter.
“I’m so sorry that’s so sad. I can’t help, but to laugh though. She’s missing out though you’re a good looking guy.” He turned red with embarrassment.
“Aw thanks y/n. Also I can’t believe you ended up running the whole time with me.” You shrugged like it was nothing, but your legs were actually aching. You two stepped into the house to the smell of bacon.
“Oh hell yeah... wait is that Tom cooking?” Harrison asked, very surprised.
“Yes, I can cook you div.” Tom said.
You noticed he changed into sweats and he was shirtless.
“Bro the last time you cooked was when-”
Tom turned surprised to see you up, you stared at him a bit too long. He cut Haz off before he can spill anymore beans,
“Morning, love, like what you see?” You scoffed,
“Actually no, just waiting for you to burn your nipples or something since your frying bacon without a shirt.” You went to pour a glass of water and as if on cue Tom yelped in pain.
“Fuck, I burned myself.” Tom hissed and you were gonna laugh at him until you saw his side.
“Oh my god Tom! What the hell how’d you manage to burn your side?” You rushed to his side with an ice pack in a dish towel.
“Haha Tom I thought you said you could cook!” Harrison said dying of laughter.
“Harrison can you go get toothpaste?”
“What the fuck toothpaste?” Harrison and Tom asked at the same time.
“Yes, trust me.” With that Harrison scurried off to get toothpaste.
“Told you being shirtless was a bad idea.” You scolded him.
“You liked it though, don’t deny it,” you pressed the ice pack to his side and he winced, “ouch, love, I was joking.” You giggled a bit at his reaction,
“How hard is it to find toothpaste? Harrison where are you?” You yelled. You looked back at Tom, seemed like something was on his mind.
“You uh look good, y/n.” He stammered, your face heating up more and your heartbeat quickening,
“Tom don’t.”
“What I can’t say my friend looks good? You told Harrison he’s good looking.” You raised your brow. Was he jealous? How the hell did he hear that from inside?
“You’re something else, Holland. Plus you have a girlfriend, don’t think she’d like to hear you say that. Especially when I’m your ex.” For some reason it pained both of you when you said that.
You sat across from him still waiting for Harrison. Tom nudged your foot with his and said, “Y/n, I wanted to say I was sorry about last night. I was tired and being a complete div.”
You looked up at him, “It’s alright, sorry for overreacting and walking out.”
“No no you had every right to.” He sighed and was about to continue, but Haz ran in,
“I got the toothpaste!” Harrison said breathless.
“Why the hell did you take so long?” You asked as Harrison handed you the tube and winked at Tom, he rolled his eyes then face palmed.
“Oh my god, Harrison.” Tom groaned. You caught on real quick, Harrison was giving you two alone time.
“You’re not slick at all Osterfield, you literally suck.” You said as he laughed.
You removed the ice pack from Tom’s side, “Alright, Tom, this is gonna sting a bit.” You warned and spread the paste on his burn he groaned in pain.
“Whoa, Harry cover your innocent eyes!” Tuwaine exclaimed covering his face when he and Harry walked in.
“Really guys having sex in the kitchen?” Harry said.
“Oh shut up you dickheads. I burnt myself and y/n is helping me out.” Tom said, still moaning.
“Tom you’re such a baby. Harry we’re no longer best friends anymore.” You stated. Harry laughed as you rolled your eyes.
“Harrison here to save the day with better bacon than Tom’s bacon!” Harrison sang. Tom slapped Harrison’s leg. You laughed excited for how the next few months would turn out because of how eventful this morning already was.
-
After a very crazy morning and a facetime meeting with your manager you had to go to the table read for the movie you were shooting. Your phone began to ring, it was Harry.
“Hello?”
“Hey, y/n, I’m really sorry Sam and I are still filming right now. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to pick you up in time to drop you off at your table read. Can you have one of the boys at home take you?” You began to stress a bit, but you knew that Harry was working on something really important to him.
“Yes of course. Let me know how filming goes later!”
“Thanks so much for understanding. I’ll tell you everything when I pick you up for dinner with my family! Bye, love.” You said goodbye and hung up, also completely forgetting about dinner with the Hollands tonight.
You walked to Harrison’s room and asked, “Hey are you gonna be busy in like the next hour or so?”
“Sorry, y/n, I’m about to meet up with some friends for lunch. What’d you need?” He asked frantically pacing looking for something.
“Oh, Harry can’t take me to my tableread anymore, I need a ride.”
“Hmm, oh found it!” Harrison pulled out a watch from his drawer, “Well Tuwaine is leaving with me, so I’m afraid your only options are Tom or the tube.”
“Really Harrison?” you groaned and he put his hands up in defense, “Ok have fun at lunch.”
You walked over to Tom’s room to see it empty, “He’s outside!” Tuwaine yelled from across Tom’s room. You thanked him and rushed outside to see Tom still shirtless. He was doing push-ups and the toothpaste looked glittery on his right side in the sunlight. His triceps and biceps enlarged every time he pushed his body up.
“You just can’t keep your eyes off me can you, y/n?” He said grunting while finishing his last few reps. You were at a loss for words because he did look really hot at the moment. You blushed and fumbled with your words,
“Oh uh sorry,” He turned and smirked at you, “I need another favor, Harry can’t take me to the tableread and Harrison and Tuwaine are going out for lunch.” He began walking closer to you making your heart skip a beat. What the hell was he doing? “I uh would take myself, but I’ve never driven here before and-” He was inches away from you he reached out and grabbed your shoulder chuckling,
“Alright alright, shut up I’ll take you.” You stared into each other's eyes not breaking eye contact and he reached over to slide the door open wider and he walked past you. You let out a breath you didn’t realize you were holding and rolled your eyes, you can’t let him get to you, he has a girlfriend! “We need to go in 45 minutes, thanks, Tom!” you yelled and he held a thumbs up.
-
“Z, I swear I cannot live in this house. Tom is acting like he’s some fuck boy and I swear he really is trying to pull something and he has a girlfriend! Did you know that?” You were rambling
“Uhmmm maybe…” She said awkwardly.
“Z! What the hell? Both you and Harry didn’t tell me.”
“What? Didn't think you’d care, cause you’re a ‘badddd bitchhh’.” You laughed at her mocking you.
“Fine, you and Harry said the exact same thing, weird… anyways what the hell do I do?” You said with your phone between your shoulder and your ear as you looked through your closet for something decent to wear at the Holland house.
“Well, I think you should just focus on what you're doing right now and focus on your growth. Sis, you just broke up with someone, be free for now. It’s time to focus on you and your work.” Zendaya was right, you needed some time to self evaluate and grow, “But also maybe look super hot tonight at the dinner, you know, take his breath away.” She started laughing.
“Z, no! You just said not to worry about boys and he has a girlfriend…”
“But…” she said, waiting for you to carry on.
“But… ok I’ll dress cute, it’s always fun doing that.” You both laughed and she told you what to wear.
“Ok I’m gonna get ready for the tableread, I’ll text you. Love ya!” You said and she said it back and you guys hung up.
“Y/n can we actually leave in 5 minutes? I want to grab lunch, my treat!” Tom said from down the hall.
“Yeah sure.” You grabbed your purse and a bag with extra clothes. You walked out and ran into Tom with a thump he held your shoulders keeping you steady.
“Oops sorry, love. Was just going to tell you to not forget there’s dinner with my family tonight.”
“Yep, got the extra clothes in here.” You said holding up the bag to show him, he smiled and took his hands off your shoulders to take the bag from you and put it over his shoulder, “I could’ve carried it but thanks, bud.” You patted his shoulder and walked off. Tom’s heart dropped when you called him, “bud.”
-
Tom pulled up to a small cafe that seemed oddly familiar. As soon as he opened the door for you you remembered.
~
Tom brought back a tray with two burgers, fries, and waters.
“This place has the best burgers in town. Closest thing we have to in-n-out burgers.” he said handing you the second tray. You told Tom you were starting to feel homesick and said he might know how to cheer you up. You smiled taking a huge bite into the burger, Tom looked at you waiting for your reaction,
“Oh my god. Absolutely amazing!” Your eyes lit up and Tom’s heart jolted at the joy on your face. He continued to watch you eat the burger that was somewhat making you less homesick, “Hey, Holland, it’s rude to stare. Eat your burger before I eat it.” You joked and he laughed while taking a bite. His heart began to race as he debated whether or not he should tell you how he feels, then he thought ‘fuck it’.
“Y/n, darling?” You hummed in response.
Here goes nothing, “I like you, y/n. I have for a while now.”
~
Your thoughts went back to what Zendaya was saying, “don’t worry about boys right now.” You took a deep breath and moved up in the line with Tom. “Tom is that you?” Someone asked from behind the counter.
“Oh, Ms. Sheila! It’s lovely seeing you again.” He said warmly and she came over to give him a hug.
“It’s been so long, and I see you’ve brought this lovely girl back. Is she your girlfriend now?” You widen your eyes and blush.
“Oh my uh no no. We’re just friends, Ms. Sheila.”
“Isn’t this the girl you confessed your feelings to, dear? Then you never came back after that, well only once and that was still ages ago.”
“Oh, that was a while ago Ms. Sheila. Tom and I are just friends now.” You said before Tom.
“Oh well that’s a shame you two would make a lovely couple. Anywho what can I get for you two today?” She asked as you followed her to her side of the counter.
“Two of the usuals please.” Tom asked. She nodded and brought the order out within 5 minutes.
“Now, Tom, I hope you come back more often. Your brothers still come in every now and then.” Tom smiled and promised Ms. Sheila that he’d come back more.
“How’d she know what your usual is if you haven’t been here in so long?” You asked as you both walked to a booth.
“I’d come here to get breakfast with my family on Saturdays and would usually hang out here with my mates after school. This place is really special to me, I’ve made a lot of memories here.” He said picking at his fries, only making it more obvious what memory he was thinking about. You two ate in silence for a while not knowing what to say because of what went down the last time you were both here.
“Alright, ready to go to set, love?” He asked, you nodded as you finished your last bit of the burger and he ate the last of your fries. You and Tom said goodbye to Ms. Sheila and said you’d come back again soon.
“Thanks, Tom, I owe you big time.” You said looking at him with a smile.
“No problem, but what for?” He asked, glancing at you then back at the road.
“For the meal, taking me to set, and letting me stay at your lovely house.”
“Oh it’s no big deal. You helped me heal my burn,” he paused and cleared his throat, “Uhm b-besides, Harry literally begged me to let you stay, and I’ll be gone next week to film Uncharted. So I’ll uh be out of your hair” He joked and your heart dropped. Harry told you Tom is the one that suggested you stay at their house. Now you sat there confused about who to believe. Regardless you were definitely going to have a chat with Harry about all of this.

Happy Halloween, Kid Danger
A/N: the idea for this one shot came from this post, the music video for High School by UMI and my chenry starved brain. I went from hating this to being lowkey happy with how it came out, despite the fact it was rushed so I could post it before halloween. a special thanks to @adorkable-blackgirl & @lesbian-so-what for their costume ideas for jasper and to @neshatriumphs for actually making me wanna write this.

“You can’t wear that costume, Henry!”
“Why? I think it’s funny!”
“You seriously wanna blow your cover all for some joke, which no one will even get unless they figure it out?”
“I mean, kinda.”
It wasn’t unusual for Ray and Henry to be arguing with each other when she entered the Man Cave, but Charlotte had to admit that the subject of this particular fight had piqued her interest. Henry was dressed as Kid Danger, but rather than his usual uniform, he was wearing the knock off version you could buy from a costume store.
“What’s going on?” She asked, dumping her bags on the steps by the tubes before making her way to the round couch.
“Henry wants to dress up as Kid Danger to that Halloween party you guys are going to,” Ray reported in the manner of one parent telling another about what their child had done now.
“I just think it would be funny,” Henry repeated, opening and closing his pant pocket, which on this version was sealed with velcro.
“That’s not a good enough reason,” Ray told him, to which his sidekick just shrugged.
The Halloween party was at some kid in their year’s house. The three friends hadn’t exactly had the time to expand their social circle at school in recent years, which was why they had all been looking forward to it for weeks. Really they were just lucky he’d invited the entire senior class, or they’d be stuck at work like the years before.
“What the hell am I supposed to do with this costume, then?” Henry conceded, going for his gum to change out of it before realising it wasn’t the real suit. “Halloween’s in two days and I don’t have another outfit.”
Charlotte was in a similar predicament, having gotten an email to say her Valkyrie costume wouldn’t arrive until the second of November. What use was a Halloween costume then? That was when she had the idea.
“I’ll wear it,” she volunteered, walking up to Henry, sizing herself up against him. She didn’t have time to design and make herself a completely new costume in two days, but she had time to take in one already made so it fit her.
“Yeah?” Henry smirked as she began to measure his arm. He couldn’t deny that he liked the idea of her in it, he had been too jealous to appreciate her as Kid Danger before, but now that they were older… He snapped himself out of it. “Then what will I wear?”
“Go as Captain Man,” Schwoz suggested, having entered the room through the secret door unnoticed. Henry looked to Ray to see if this was far enough from the truth that he’d allow it.
“Fine! Fine!” Ray exclaimed, bored of the conversation. “Just don’t be too upset when you don’t look as good in the outfit as I do.”
They figured that the best way to get hold of the costume on such short notice was to have Ray transform and change out of the suit. The two of them weren’t so far off in height these days, so all Charlotte had to do is make it slimmer and look a little less real. It wouldn’t be a problem, she loved designing.
“I know, technically, it’s not a couple’s costume, but we are going matching this year,” Henry pointed out with a nervous smile. He was modelling the almost complete Captain Man outfit in his living room, whilst Charlotte made some finishing touches. The party was soon and they were all meeting there to get ready any minute now.
“Are you asking me out, Hart?” She questioned, looking up at him through a crappier version of his mask. He hadn’t stopped staring at her since she put the costume on, he really liked seeing her as a hero. He was beginning to seriously consider if seeing her in it everyday was a good enough reason to quit his job.
“If I was, would you say yes?” She removed the last pin before standing up to face him, meeting his lips with hers as a response.
“Now that’s disturbing to look at,” Jasper called out, letting himself in without knocking -as usual- his date, Lucas, on his tail. The pair were dressed as Bill and Ted from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, partly because it was the first movie they watched together, partly because Lucas refused to go as salt and pepper shakers.
Jasper wasn’t exactly surprised to see his two best friends kissing. If anything he was more amazed he hadn’t walked in on it before.
Henry and Charlotte broke up the kiss and looked briefly offended, before remembering who they were dressed as.
“Yeah okay, fair enough.” Henry agreed, shuddering. “Let’s just get going.”
Lucas drove them there, being the only one with both a license and a car. This meant that Jasper had the aux. And much to the dismay of everyone else in the car, he declined to play anything other than Calling All the Monsters on repeat.
In the back seat, Henry and Charlotte sat beside each other with their fingers interlaced. It had been a long time since either of them had attended a party for reasons other than espionage and so both were more than a little nervous to hang out with their peers uninterrupted. Charlotte in particular couldn’t stop her mind for relaying all the many ways the night could go wrong, though most of the proposed scenarios did come straight out of movies.
Henry saw the familiar look of worry on her face and couldn’t help but smile at the familiarity.
“Cheer up, Char, it’s gonna be great. Don’t go tarnishing Kid Danger’s fun-loving reputation, it took me years to cultivate,” he whispered, leaning across to peck the side of her head.
“Cheeseball,” she retorted, acting as if she wasn’t now grinning from ear to ear.
Maybe it was the fact that they were both dressed as superheroes, or maybe it was just that they were together, but they walked into the party with a newfound confidence.  It felt like forever since they saw their classmates outside of school. As a matter of fact, it felt like forever since they were just regular, irresponsible teenagers. Well, not too irresponsible.
“Thanks, but I’m not drinking, I got work tomorrow. Y’know, fighting crime, saving the world and such,” Henry said upon being offered a beer, doing his best Ray impression with his hands on his hips.
Charlotte caught herself about to tell him off for giving away his secret before remembering his costume. She could tell this was good for him, a night where he could be himself, to an extent. He boasted to others about crimes he’d fought, perhaps with a little more detail than he should know, not that many people were sober enough to notice.
Seeing how fun it looked to be in character, she then decided to take advantage of the situation and do her best Henry impression. She bugged him loudly about wanting to fly the Mancopter, made jokes about how all the girls loved him and answered almost everything with ‘feels gooddd.’ If they knew Henry better, maybe the other seniors would question why her impression of Kid Danger was so similar to him, but they didn’t. And that made it fun. Overall, despite herself, Charlotte had to admit they were having a pretty great time. That was until-
“COPS!” No one was sure who yelled it, they just dropped their cups and stampeded to the nearest exit.
Charlotte had been talking to Chloe at the time and had no idea where any of her friends were, but she felt herself being dragged with the flow before she had the chance to look.
Soon everyone was running down the street, away from the party and into the night. Henry, Jasper and Lucas were all together when he spotted Charlotte up ahead of them.
“I’ll see you later,” Henry yelled before speeding up into a sprint to catch up with her.
She felt a hand grab hers as they ran and her fear melted into excitement. For once they were young, running from the cops instead of doing their job for them. He guided her into an alley where they pressed their backs against the wall, finally able to catch their breath.
“Stank Street, huh?” Charlotte laughed once she’d stop panting enough to register where they were. The familiar stench of one of the places the tubes came up wafted up her nose, but in the moment she didn’t mind much.
“What? Not romantic enough for a first date?” He teased, nudging his shoulder against hers. She shook her head and let it rest against him, so he leaned his head on top of hers.
They sat like that for a while longer in the night air, Henry’s arms wrapped around Charlotte when he felt she was cold. They could be down in the Man Cave in seconds, yet neither felt ready to end the night just yet.
“Happy Halloween, Kid Danger,” Henry whispered, breaking the silence.
“Happy Halloween, Captain Man.”
