One person on the tiktok comment section had a theory that the reason the monkeys were so happy to see Macaque is that they never knew where he went. Wukong just came back one day without Macaque, and he obviously wouldn't tell them what really happened, so instead he just told the monkeys that he left them. So the monkeys were obviously confused and missed him, which is why they were so happy to see him again

yknow i just realised
in the og jttw when macaque was impersonating wukong he had even trained a group of monkeys and like used illusions or something (idr its been a while) to make them look like the pilgrim gang (tang sanzhang, sha wujing, zhu bajie and long ma/ao lie)
wonder if the monkeys still remember him as that. did they ever find out the ‘wukong’ trying to get them to impersonate the pilgrims and go on the journey to the west themselves wasnt the real wukong?? is that where macaque’s bond and fondness for the monkeys came from?
idk i just think itd be cute n silly. a nice lil reference even though it probably wasnt on purpose and im jhst overthinking it

Macaque knew, because the little ones had told him, that Wukong hadn’t set foot in the room they once shared since their last night together before the failed attack on Heaven. And he knew that the only ones who had been inside were the older monkeys who kept it clean of dust.
From the monkeys, he also knew that Wukong had forsaken the Stone Palace, leaving it instead to them and their children to use as a home after the burning of the Mountain, so that they would never again fear the wrath of Heaven.
He hadn’t truly believed it, until he saw it for himself, walking the dark hallways, trying to keep from hearing the heated words and yells from Princess Iron Fan.
The once adored and preserved collection of relics and gifts from Azure, Peng and Yellow Tusk, stolen in the days before they left Heaven and given to Wukong as tribute, now stored away into a ruined adjacent hall, piled up like junk, the banners of the former Brotherhood rolled up and stored away. Boxes of everything Wukong had taken pride in making and preparing for them, everything he’d earnt from his time going West, even his finest clothes and regalia from Heaven.
He had put all of it away and never touched it again, but this room, the room they’d shared untouched and bare of scents after so long. Still, Wukong did not dare to enter it, didn’t even go into the same hallway as it, and had instead left the entire Palace of Stone to the little ones and built a hut, barely big enough for himself away from the comforts of the home they had made together.
Something twisted in Macaque’s chest as he looked into that room, the nest of pillows and blankets that Wukong had found while out with Demon Bull King, or made during those long rainy seasons when the weather forced them to halt working. That nest kept the winter chills away but was never too hot in summer, the clothes Wukong had made for Macaque, neatly hung and stored away just waiting to be worn, the oils that they used to help groom each other and on the headrest of the bed, a carving of the sun, the moon, and around them a sea of stars.
“One for each of the children.” Wukong’s voice explained faintly, one night when they’d been laid together in the quiet of the night. “And maybe, one day, we’ll add something else. Something unique, like the sun and moon.”
“You think we’d make good parental figures?” Macaque heard himself ask, a fond smile on his tone. “We are nowhere near old enough or wise enough.”
“When we’ve matured more, who knows! It’ll be another adventure.” Wukong declared a promise in every word. “One where we go together, every step of the way, just you and me.”
It was so long ago… before the Monk, Azure, Heaven… it was so distant in his memory now, as were all the other memories of nights they’d spent enjoying each other’s touch and the comfort of just being together. The days when all they’d ever needed or wanted was already before them, ready for the taking.
Had Wukong truly only put away everything to do with Heaven? All the mess that began with Azure? Had he truly been set on forsaking whatever the Buddha and Heaven offered and to come back to the Mountain?
Was that why…
But then why? Why would he torment himself like this by keeping the past with Macaque untouched? Macaque had… Why?
We know why. We just haven’t accepted it as the truth yet. … … We can’t talk to him now, Princess Iron Fan will skin us for interrupting them. Then who can we go to, Future?
Maybe Demon Bull King was up for a visit? The old Bull had always been kind, and he at least understood what was between the two Monkeys.
“I didn’t ask Chang’e to send that Memory Orb to your family princess Iron Fan. As far as I knew, it was somewhere in her vault. Alongside the memories of the other Pilgrims, My Master and her own memories of her husband.” Wukong’s voice reached him suddenly, tired, worn out and heavy with regret. “I just wish she’d written ahead to warn me she was doing it, I’d have asked Mk to hold off on that beach party idea.”
“Chang’e is not to blame for your lack of communication!” Princess Iron Fan yelled in anger. “You should have told me! My own family plotted against me, and you took steps without ever thinking to inform me?!”
“There was no point in wasting my poorly chosen words on you or your son when you’d already made it clear in the early days you wanted me as far from you and your family as possible.” Wukong remarked and Princess Iron Fan sputtered for just a moment. “I have known you since my first steps in Heaven, and as I told Nezha, you all made clear your disdain for me. You never listened then, you wouldn’t have listened after your fall. I can’t be blamed for simply abiding your boundaries.”
The tension was cut by a phone chime, two incoming messages.
Wukong sighed. “MK says Red Son is staying the night with him. It’s late and I want to at least try and sleep tonight. We can continue this conversation later when we are both rested and in a better headspace. If you want to stay here, for whatever reason, then the little ones will show you to a bedroom in the palace.”
“The Palace is still here?” Now Princess Iron Fan sounded shocked, “But the fir-”
“It destroyed and ruined the mountain’s natural beauty for a few years. The palace was untouched by the flames thanks to the barrier. Our… The people survived many years before they settled. The Palace is now home to their descendants and the few who chose to stay awake. If you want to stay, they’ll show you to a room, if not, we’ll pick this up again tomorrow.”
A Memory Orb, one that held Wukong’s memories that had been kept by Chang’e until now? It was likely back at the Bull Family home.
We won’t like what we learn. But it will help us understand.
With the consent of his future self and the silence that showed permission of his past self, Macaque let himself fall into the shadows.

Mac with the lil monkeys is my favorite genre <3
These are bunch of screenshot-redraw doodles, plus one scene from a fic (it's Second Chances by Zephrya_loves_fandoms--it's great!)
I decided to focus more on form and expression than detail for these, just for fun ^-^

House.
During the Brotherhood, I would like to think Macaque and Wukong lived together. I feel like, Macaque defiantly did. Especially after Wukong was trapped under Five Phases Mountain because Macaque had to take care of the mountain and monkeys by himself. But after Macaques death, and the Journey was finished. When Wukong came back to FFM. All the monkeys had swarmed him. Asking 'Where is Gege? (Macaque)' and 'He disappeared!' 'He hasn't come back' 'Were worried' Wukong didn't answer them. He couldn't bear the thought of telling them he murdered his best friend. So when he had gotten into the house, and Macaques things were still there. Left. Abandoned. A bit messy. But with Macaques faint scent still all over the house. Wukong had a full on breakdown, finally fully processing what he had done.

“Brothe-”
“Wake them up and you’ll regret it.”
Peng’s beak shut with an audible click at Yellow Tusk’s words. He peeked into the room and fought down the chuckle that tried to slip from his beak.
Demon Bull King and Azure Lion were fast asleep, and all around them were sleeping little monkeys. Wukong sat up, surrounded by even more sleeping monkeys, quietly grooming Chi Yue’s hair as the goddess gently rocked two little shadow monkeys in her arms, all the while, Yellow Tusk was sat up in a chair reading a book with two small monkeys clinging to his shoulders and quietly cooing.
Macaque was sitting on a soft cushion, careful claw tips gently plucking at the strings of a lute, filling the air with soft music as the troop slept.
“What wore them out?” Peng questioned as he settled down at the edge of the sleeping troop.
“Round up for nap time.” Wukong answered quietly as some little monkeys sifted and moved in their sleep.  “The little ones somehow got into the sugarcane supply and turned it into a game of chase and tag. Then they refused to settle down until they had a story. But since no one could choose a story, they got a lullaby instead.”
“A lullaby?” Peng repeated, lifting an eyebrow. “None of us have a voice for singing, Wukong.”
“We men don’t.” Macaque said and nodded to Chi Yue, who was still gently rocking the two little ones in her arms. “She, on the other hand, sings better than any maiden in Heaven.”
“Hush.” Chi Yue softly shushed the dark furred monkey. “I do not sing that well.”
Macaque’s eye brow rose and he used his tail to wave to the entire troop, Demon Bull King and Azure Lion, who were all soundly sleeping. “They were tired. My singing didn’t send them off to sleep.”
“Yes it did.” Was the charused answer from Yellow Tusk, Wukong and Macaque.
