username: “reef” because she loves the sea (duh), and “princess” because it’s really pretty + feminine, and she literally is a reef princess after all. finally, her cute nickname “reya”, where the alliteration makes her url extra catchy !

neteyam is the ultimate aesthetic, educated and sophisticated king for liking tumblr by himself ✊🏻 (no shade to lolo though). like ‘reya, he also has a clean, aesthetically-pleasing layout, but it’s more masculine.

username: just sounds cool, y’know? he also works his ass off and is “burnt out” after all (perfection and golden-childism ain’t easy), and eclipse is just a time of day neteyam really enjoys where he gets to relax and spend time for himself. 

neteyam doesn’t complain much in real life, or let out a lot of his feelings. tumblr is like his peaceful, personal, private corner where he can speak his mind, which he really appreciates. 

i can see him reblogging and following fashion accounts that he likes, as well as occasionally posting a little ramble. ‘teyam’s page is scattered with some little thoughts and feelings here and there between reblogs of cool streetwear clothing and artistic photos/photography (for human neteyam). 

you’ll see him and tsireya interact with each other on occasion!

if there’s a girl he likes, neteyam’ll try and see if she has a tumblr. he’ll eventually find it, and enjoys scrolling through her posts + loves reading her little rambles. but he does it from a distance, and doesn’t interact (you’d never know. he’s the epitome of secret admirer). . .

username: kiri’s a spiritual gal, what can i say? not to mention, she was named after the atokirina, so it’s perfect. there’s also angel numbers!! ofc!!! ps: this url was taken at first, but she tracked down the person and convinced them to give it to her. somehow. 

unlike neteyam who writes ‘n posts small things sometimes… kiri can rant here. don’t get me wrong, she’s not posting paragraphs, but she definitely lets loose when she wants to.

human kiri posts her plants, her crystals, her music vinyls, the desserts she likes baking, her books and posters, literally anything and everything you’d find in her room because it’s all pretty.

username: he’s just rotxo! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ though when he first joined, his @ was originally “reefboyrotxo”, but he (jokingly) got called out for copying tsireya, so he changed it.

hm, tbh, i don’t really see him as an avid tumblr user!

i have a headcanon that human rotxo'd be a surfer though, so i feel like he’d probably have 1-2 posts of a beautiful sunset + his surfboard, and like one post of a random thought he had. that’s it. his theme would also be blue/teal. 

i feel like he would’ve gotten tumblr because of his friends, and goes on just to see all of their posts.

ao’nung is already intrigued at neteyam, but when he hears lo’ak is on there? oh boy.

he immediately signs up, and then gets all of his friends to as well.

soon, lo’ak is flabbergasted at the sudden flood of random anonymous troll asks he receives on his empty blog. 

ao’nung was going to anonymously send something to ‘teyam as well (obviously not to lo’ak’s extent), but after finding and looking through it… he actually secretly likes neteyam’s blog.

after everyone find out it’s him, he still eventually just keeps his tumblr to continue messing with the sullys, and his sister. popping in with a “DELETE THIS 🔥🔥🔥” to show he’s indeed still there, once every few eclipses.

Artist Highlights #4 - Abbey

Abbey (@ekaterinaroskova) is an artist and writer, and they're also this zine's co-editor! They have worked on the layout editing of both our first issues, as well as helped out in organizing.

For Edition #1, they drew the comic "Exoskeletons for Children," and they also wrote "Cretan Metaphors: An Analysis," which you can read in pages 16 to 18 of our first issue.

For Edition #2, they wrote "Interview #42," which can be found in pages 25 to 27 of our first issue.

What type of art do you usually make? What medium, or what type of writing?

I like making outsider-perspective epistolary works; this is a fancy way of saying I tend to write in-universe perspectives on the events of any given story, if I'm creating fan content. It's what I did for Issue 2 and what I'm planning for Issue 3. I also really like to make comics, even if that's more of a side-hobby.

Who's your favorite Mabel character to draw/write about? What are your favorite motifs and recurrent imagery in the podcast?

Character's tough, but probably a tie between Thomas, Lolo, and Jonathan. Thomas is ridiculously important to me, Lolo's just fascinating, and Jonathan's fun to turn into a tragedy. My favorite motif is the loops/ouroboros motif (Thomas fan

What have you liked about working on the zine?

I love everything about this zine!! I love getting to work under the incredible Andy (who is just fantastic at leading such a big project), I love getting to collaborate with my friends, I love getting to help with design work. All of it is fantastic.

What do you like about the zine as a reader?

I adore the variety in the works showcased. It's not something I've seen done before for a fanzine-- very fitting for Mabel's weirdness.

Iseng-Iseng, Bikin-Bikin

Desain grafis.

Entah kapan dimulainya, tahu-tahu saya sangat suka mengamatinya. Mungkin sejak jaman Pak sering membawa pulang majalah Elle dan Marie Claire Prancis yang didapatnya di kantor. Mungkin dari buku-buku cerita bergambar yang dibeli Mak setiap kali ia bertemu toko buku. Tetapi yang pasti, sejak bertemu dengan Bebe Indah Miryam, desain grafis itu jadi amatlah menggoda. Saya rajin mengamatinya membuat layout tempat kami bekerja, Gadis. Ketika ia membuat rancangan baru buat Gadis, termasuk mengganti logonya: oooh, saya seperti permen karet, yang menempel di bawah bangku. Nggak mau lepas. Dari Bebe juga saya dapat buku Editing by Design karya Jan V. White. Buku besar dan tebal yang membuat saya belajar banyaaaaaaaaak sekali, dan sampai hari-hari terakhir saya di dunia majalah, ilmu dari buku ini tetap berlaku.

Ketika bekerja di biro iklan, contekan saya bertambah berkat kerja bersama para partner art director saya. Widyalupi Nonis, Maria K. Sum, Ria Untari, adalah teman kerja sekaligus kakak guru yang sampai sekarang ilmunya tetap saya simpan.

Desain grafis.

Barangkali ini yang membuat saya ngotot kembali ke dunia majalah. Bukan menulisnya, tetapi melihat bagaimana tulisan jadi begitu hidup berkat desain. Dengan atau tanpa foto, tulisan bisa dibuat menggoda untuk dibaca. Training perihal majalah Cosmopolitan di New York membuat saya memahami lebih jauh tentang desain grafis, yang ternyata memerlukan logika. Tak melulu rasa. Noni Soeparman adalah rekan kerja sekaligus partner adu ngotot setiap kali kami akan mengeksekusi cover.

Desain grafis.

Terlalu menggoda untuk tidak dicoba. Dan hari itu tiba ketika Dua Ibu akan membuat album musikalisasi puisi. Minta tolong pada seorang desainer, nggak jadi-jadi. Minta pada yang lain, hasilnya sungguh tak menggembirakan hati. Akhirnya nekat bikin sendiri. Dibantu Andri Sonda, saya minta ia mengajari aplikasi photoshop (super sederhana) dan indesign (secukupnya). Setiap langkah saya catat, lalu utak-atik sendiri. Oh, keringetannya seperti air curahan dari ember, dong. Deras. Tapi hati terlalu geram untuk menyerah.

Cover album Gadis Kecil, dibuat dengan memanfaatkan foto Soca yang sedang main hujan, dan tulisan tangan saya yang “ibu-ibu” banget (andalan bikin surat ijin nggak olahraga buat teman-teman SMP). Ketika jadi, banyak yang berkomentar, sederhana tapi nendang. Terima kasih. Sederhana karena bisanya itu, hahaha… Kalau nendang, mungkin karena pakai warna andalan: merah.

Setelah itu, album Becoming Dew. Yang ini –menurut saya—tidak sukses sama sekali. Tetapi album ini kan dibikin hanya buat dokumentasi dari dua orang yang baru berbaikan setelah musuhan sekian tahun. Jadi biar kelihatan, tercatat, ya pakai cover deh. Dibuat dengan memanfaatkan foto suami dan type face yang ada di computer saat itu. Usaha: less than zero.

Desain grafis.

Dan saya semakin tergoda, semakin nekat mencoba ini itu. Hampir semua cover album AriReda saya pembuat desainnya. Kecuali Suara dari Jauh, yang semua gambarnya dibuat oleh seniman idola, Ruth Marbun. Setelah proyek yang satu ini, saya kembali menggunakan karya Ruth untuk album terakhir, AriReda Menyanyikan Puisi Sapardi Djoko Damono.

Membuat desain cover album tak selalu langsung jadi. Seperti album kedua AriReda, yang muncul 8 tahun setelah album pertama itu. Waduh desain yang nggak masuk seleksi lebih dari 25! Bahkan sempat minta bantuan dua desainer untuk ikutan bikin. Tetapi tidak lolos seleksi  kurator saat itu: Hendro Yuwono, Felix Dass, dan Ari Malibu. Sampai putus asa rasanya. Cover yang akhirnya terpilih, saya buat setelah melihat pameran karya Ibu Sri Astari Rasjid di Kawasan Kota Tua. Terpesona saya pada patung Drupadi buatannya. Saya foto dari belakang, lalu iseng-iseng saya beri tambahan gambar daun, lalu beri teks. Eh, langsung approved! Moga-moga emang mereka senang, bukan karena kasihan sama saya yang tiap hari kirim desain.

Ada apanya ya? Kok bisa begitu menggelitik? Mungkin bermain dengan gambar, dengan teks, dengan warna. Apa pun itu, saya jadi senang mendesain. Dari cover album, merambah ke cover buku, sampai desain buku secara utuh (Na Willa itu saya yang desain, dirapikan oleh Cik Guru Noni Soeparman).Semua bikin “nyala” meski ada juga sisi nggak asiknya ketika memeriksa teks, foto/gambar jangan sampai terpotong/tertimpa teks(ini sering terjadi, sih) sebelum naik cetak.

Satu yang bikin agak gimanaaaa pas bikin adalah buku Catatan Perjalanan AriReda. Tiap baca teksnya, ada saja yang mau ditambah dan diganti dan dihapus. Kacau. Untung ada Felix yang gebah-gebah, jadi selesai tepat waktu. Oya, satu hal yang selalu bikin gemas adalah soal pilihan fonts/typeface. Kalau kerja sama Felix, dia hampir selalu complain soal huruf yang saya pilih. Kurang modern. Kurang kekinian. Kurang sleek. Pas dia bilang begitu, saya selalu jawab, “Masak sih?” Tapi setelah diam sebentar, dan dilihat-lihat lagi dengan hati tenang,  yang dia bilang itu benar adanya, hahahaha. Kurang ngulik huruf banget! Belajar lagi nanti, ya.

Eh, belajar lagi? Memangnya mau desain-desain terus? Hmm, nggak tahu ya. Tapi yang pasti beberapa bulan lalu, sempat bikin desain logo dan selongsong untuk restoran kesayangan, The Yap’s Kitchen. Saya suka banget ngerjainnya. Semoga yang dibikinin senang juga.

Jadi akan mendesain terus?  Barangkali. Meski telunjuk sering pegal dan mendadak kaku karena kelamaan geser-geser trackpad dan kesal kalau ada yang terlewat karena nggak teliti, kegiatan yang satu ini sangatlah mengasyikkan.

That’s why ’Soft Spot’ is such an important album because we didn’t get to play and hunker down as a full band like this for almost two years! After a few of us recorded the ‘Covers from the Cave’ album, strictly from home for our quarantined fans, it was a pleasure and privilege to let loose all together in the beautiful Oakland studio, bouncing off each other with creativity, jokes, and sweat, with Thai food and donuts, day after day, night after night. The music on ‘Soft Spot’ speaks that joy and diligence. Sometimes we recorded when we were hella sick or had pulled back muscles (getting older is tough!). Sometimes we recorded on our birthdays and had cake next to the mics. When you get good sounds, you can’t stop! And all the sounds we were getting were good. Really good. And that’s when the recording is easy. We continued the Honeydrops album tradition of bringing many special musical guests to bless the studio with their magic. Sousaphones, strings, space echoes, it’s all here. Our engineer, Jacob LaCally’s, aka ‘Cubby's', fine ears and maybe finer patience kept the session rolling through the hours. Leon Cotter and Scott Messersmith have become staples of the Honeydrop sound, filling the room with the full band sensation we could lean back on. We enlisted the Kid Wonder and Oakland native, Oliver Tuttle, with his beautiful energy and ideas. The 'Ponchatoula Powerhouse, Miles Lyons, dropping in from Louisiana to add a whole new low end to our music! And the core Drops were in full form: Beaumont displaying what a badass drummer he is. Yanos’s arranging prowess, giving you those luscious horns and melodic movement! Lorenzo’s multi-instrumental spirit and soul just shining so bright. Lolo! Benjamin’s feel and groove to keep that sweet Honeydrop flavor dripping into your heart. And Lech, knocking it out the damn park once again, with his legendary voice, and endless song-writing visions. Ok ini bakal bahas my recent experience (not exactly mine) tapi intinya 2 hari belakangan mendapat kabar 2 of my mutuals dapat offer dari Jardine buat intake Oxbridge 2023. Yang satu emang kenal dekat banget dari... 2013? Wow lama juga. Yang satu lagi baru reach out di instagram recently terus dari situ jadi email-emailan.

I am not saying in any way that they made it because of me... karena beneran the credits are all theirs, dari awal juga ni orang udah keren karena udah tried to apply in the first place. Ku cuma membantu ngasih mereka dokumen coret-coretan (a very rough one) of my interview prep dulu back in 2019, yang I really doubt is any help for them.

But one thing I know (karena ku ngerasain sendiri dulu), what I did is helpful in terms of mental preparation. Ibarat mau perang, mau datang interview juga butuh strategi kan. Bayangin ada 2 troops mau perang (troop A dan B) ngelawan 1 troop lain yang sama (troop C): yang satu (troop A) udah tahu seberapa kuat si lawan (troop C) sampai detail banget berapa orang di kuda, berapa archer, berapa yang on-foot (mon maap gatau istilah field battle - mohon dimaklumi), mereka juga udah tahu layout fieldnya: di mana ditch, di mana archery-nya lawan berada, di mana ada sungai, ada forests etc; meanwhile yang satu lagi (troop B) cuma tahu in general mereka akan lawan siapa (troop C) tapi nggak tahu details. Apakah kemudian troops A pasti menang lawan troop C dibandingkan dengan troop B? Belum tentu. Bisa aja dua-duanya menang lawan troop C, only based on their skill. Tapi peluang buat troop A menang jauh lebih besar dibandingkan troop B. Troop A bisa srategize better, optimizing their power sesuai medan perang; meanwhile troop B jadi harus pinter being reactive.

Dari kemarin kalau ada orang reach out ke aku nanya-nanya jardine interview prep, aku cuma bantu ngasih peta medan perangnya aja. Si dokumen scribble aku itu, terus sama a few points yang menurutku dulu helpful to be said (in my case). Dengan peta ini, mereka jadi lebih siap dan mentally jadi lebih ga kaget dibandingkan candidate lain yang mungkin ga punya akses ke peta ini. In a way, jadinya kenal aku bisa jadi satu privilege. Tapi ga harus minta juga sih: semuanya sudah kutulis juga di tumblr ini (di postingan judulnya Jardine -- cari sendiri ye, males hyperlink).

Intinya do research sih. Orang-orang yang udah did their homework, did their research on what the interview questions would be, plus who will interview them. Termasuk salah satunya juga ya reach out ke current scholar terus nanya mereka. Of course not every scholar have as much time as I do lol. Tapi kalau mereka hoki dengan memilih reach out ke aku, there you go. Jackpot.

Kemarin baca di mana ya, twitter atau tumblr atau ig gitu, ada orang yang cerita dia udah interview kerja 2 tahun selalu ga lolos... pas baca itu antara kasian sedih sama bingung kesel. There must be something wrong then? Either dia apply ke position yang ga sesuai sama qualificationnya dia atau ya dia ga took note aja dari setiap interview they'd done? Karena aneh banget. Atau w yang se-insensitive itu aja?

Yaudah intinya mau bilang kalau bahkan bilang ke teman that you believe they can make it aja secara psikologi sudah sangat helpful kok. So let's keep giving supports to people around us! And also of course to ourselves!

Artist Highlights #5 - Andrómeda F.

Andy (@andromerot) is an artist and writer, and she is also the zine's main organizer and co-editor. She created the zine, organizes it, runs the social media, and does some of the layout editing. He also makes art for it.

For Edition #1, she drew "Ruthlessness".

For Edition #2, he drew "Death's Gift."

What type of art do you usually make? What medium, or what type of writing?

I tend towards digital art, but I also have a lot of fun with watercolors and oil pastels. I haven't written anything for this zine yet, but I'm an amateur poet and short story writer!

Who's your favorite Mabel character to draw? What are your favorite motifs and recurrent imagery in the podcast?

Well I can't choose a favorite character, but I tend to make art about our two main girls, as well as characters like Veratrine, Ekaterina, and Lolo. I have a thing for odd and unsettling women :)

What have you liked about working on the zine?

Well, my own art making is nice, but my absolute favorite thing is the editing of everyone's work together, which me and Abbey start doing as soon as the submission form opens. It's amazing to see what everyone comes up with and how we can place it in a pleasing and cohesive way, and I've always been really proud of our end results.
