A cocktail stick is often the best little tool to use, normally I work with my face about six inches from my pottery but if I film it I have to find a compromise distance where I can see what I'm doing but allows the camera some space (and keeps my head out of the shot!). I've got a pretty good set-up but sometimes it just gets in the way! I've thought of suspending a canera from the ceiling to get rid of the tripod, that's something for another day. 🙂 This jug was made from terracotta clay and covered in a white slip to give me the plain canvas I need to illustrate. I think the jug will hold about three pints once it's been fired, thinking some straight sided water beakers would go well with this. Here is a much better indication of the colour of the ash glaze that I have made using clay dug from the OmVed site and ash from burning the logs I gathered there. The colour of the glaze changes so much especially in strong sunlight and under studio lights. One minute it’s olive green the next it’s a tan brown but this is what it looks like in the gallery and under ‘normal’ light levels. This picture also shows the variation in surface finish from matte and satin areas through to high gloss runs. The pattern and the shape are based on Roman pottery found at the Highgate woods kiln site. Shell bottle vase. This is part of a collection of work that will soon be making its way down to the @theleachpottery This project involved gathering materials local to St Ives such as clays, silts, rocks and objects from beach combing and combining them with materials local to my studio in London. I also used my time in Cornwall to reflect the on traditional cultural practices as well as photographing and sketching the local landscapes and these influenced some of the forms, textures, colours and details of the work I have made. This piece is made with Dobles Clay from St Agnes, and glazed with clay dug from the Red River mouth at Godrevy combined with Ash made from burning windfall wood collected near my studio in London. The form is based on a buoy that I found in the harbour at St Ives and the Limpet decoration is cast from shells I gathered with my son from the local beaches. Managed to fit a tiny braided black lead and silver snap ring to my model spotty dog with help from my silversmith, thank you @lesleyolley I need all the help I can get as Christmas comes into sight (there, I said that word!) 🙂 I made this model with terracotta clay and decorated it with slips and oxides before firing in my kiln (twice) with a clear glaze.
