niki tries new things!
So, just to let y’all know what I’ve been into the past few months, I decided to make a list. some of these things haven’t changed from the past but others have! so if you see me reblogging more about the new things you don’t have to be startled at all :)
A) things 🍑 I still enjoy:
word of honor & faraway wanderers : I don’t think that’s ever gonna change tbh. I’m still writing a long fic for woh and I plan to at least get another one finished for the fandom before taking a break from creating for it. I had one more in store, but it’s becoming oddly personal and I think I’ll work on it in my spare time and possibly never post it, who knows!;
winter begonia : I fell in love with the drama and I’m still reading the novel that it was based on, so of course I’m gonna stick to them for a very long time! I have a long wip in place and another planned for the drama, but they require a lot of research and I’m collecting various pieces of information to give them justice. so I may be on hold in the fandom but not forever!;
other various danmei novels/shows: I’m still waiting on winner is king drama to air :( so you can see me ranting about sha po lang in equal measure. then there’s golden stage, my absolute love, and lord seventh :D so yay for that!;
good omens : the love is resurfacing due to the new season creeping in on us, but it never quite left in the first place. expect more content on the ineffable husbands and their unruly children >:) cannot wait!;
welcome to night vale : I want to pick up the podcast again! :( but I’m a perfectionist at heart and I cannot fathom skipping episodes! so I will have to plan my listening schedule accordingly. wish me luck!;
B) things 👯‍♀️ I don’t quite enjoy anymore:
the untamed & mdzs : I’m sorry but... it’s not doing it for me anymore ;-; which is sad bc I made good friends through that ;—; but my sparks only come back in regards to it while reading meta or character analysis. I still have some fics saved that I occasionally re-read from my favorite authors, but I think I have outgrown my stay in the fandom. I will be forever grateful for mdzs for introducing me to a bunch of new interesting things to delve into in 2020, for keeping me company during forced isolation and for bringing me joy with lots of new people. AND I think it’s time to let go at the same time. this doesn’t mean I won’t enjoy my friends rambling to me about this or that character, this or that plot point or fanon scenario tho! I’ll just keep my distance and let them have fun :) it’s ok;
lotr & the hobbit : only a few of you will know that this blog was originally a bagginshield nostalgia blog in origin. the username is evidence of that after all! I will always love both fandoms, but I haven’t looked for new content of fics in a while and I routinely re-read old fics rather than engaging with brand new creations so... it’s time to let go. I considered changing my username too, but since i share it with my art blog idk what to do... we will see!;
anime in general : namely Mob Psycho 100. I will always love it, don’t get me wrong. but I haven’t had the emotional capacity to engage with mp100 final season yet and I don’t think I’m ready to let go of it. I will suspend my judgment for now, waiting for when I will be ready to properly move on;
C) NEW ✨ things I enjoy now:
house of the dragon : look. I don’t really care for got or the book!canon in general. I’m just a casual fan ;-; no need to explain all the details to me. more than being a rude tourist who doesn’t bother to learn about the culture, think of me as a tired hostess or steward forced to take a liking to the local fast food place in between flights. that would be me, flipping through the menu and getting hooked on r//haenicent content bc I’m but a smol bi and a simp for pretty and dramatic ladies. sue me. I’m not interested in the discourse, I don’t want to know who is terrible and why, this is fictional and I am tired. but if you see me reblogging stuff from there I will tag accordingly with the proper tags from now on, so you can mute safely;
the devil judge : some of you may have noticed I started talking about this kdrama somewhere about last October and I haven’t been the same since. I won’t write for the fandom but expect me to be annoying and hyper focused on it at all times when you less expect it. I can be quite steadfast in certain aspects of my fandom life and this is no exception;
helluva boss : me? liking indie-turned-super-popular animation? in this economy? it’s more likely than you’d think! look. I’m slightly less casual and more committed about this compared to my recent hotd fixation. but. once again, I have no interest in the discourse. I will reblog stuff from it and make an effort to tag even if I grew out of the habit as of recently. I found out about it last April and it helped with my anxiety. I’m enjoying something new after a long time and it doesn’t even require me to create content for it either. I can just lay back and chill. so. no fighting;
don’t hug me I’m scared : ik it’s unsettling and I care deeply about it, ok? but ik some of you are a bit uncomfortable with the material so I will take precautions and tag appropriately. I will only reblog stuff from the fandom bc I have no mental energy to create any content for it. I have no ship to board and no intention to join any ship tho, so there’s that. I just like the medium and mindlessly engage with it, triggering or not. sometimes I trigger myself just by paying attention to it, but I won’t subject y’all to it and will tag, I promise;
dune : I will be obnoxious about it. blame the upcoming movie for it. the visuals are pretty, the ladies are even prettier and even though I don’t really care for the tim boy I am endlessly entertained by his character since Paul and his life choices are amusing to me: he makes no damn sense, compels me though. also expect me to be annoying af about bene gesserit shenanigans in general bc. well. I’m only human;
the hunger games : less than dune, but the new movie interests me quite a bit. I love me some fictional villains and meta on them. their fictional struggles fascinate me. I don’t want to engage in the discourse with this one either;
succession : I have not watched the series, but an old friend of mine very enthusiastically insisted I give it a try so I will do that while trying to avoid spoilers at the same time. the stakes are high!;
D) things 👀 I’m looking forward to:
crafting : I want to make tiny things ;-; where is the time tho????
reading : there are so many things I want to read! mental health has been wild recently, I barely had energy to keep up with my favorite fic updates :( that’s all I have had energy for in the past few months ;—;
drama series : I’ve been given excellent suggestions but I keep falling asleep at odd times and haven’t found the time for that yet. which is very sad and very upsetting;
drawing : I feel like I haven’t practiced in a very long time and that’s unacceptable!;
music : I have new albums to listen to from my favorite artists, but I feel like I’m putting it off bc I fear I won’t enjoy them much :( , on the other hand I have received amazing suggestions and I’m excited to give them a try!;
I think this is all! I will probably put a “keep reading” on this later on. but yeah! It’s nice to be back :)

Fic ideas I got in my google docs
I started writing when i was in middle school and now that I’m out of high school I got the first parts of so many fics planned out in my head or posted on other accounts but none of them are finished and I want to at least finish 1 before I turn 25
Italics = nope; Bold = maybe; Heading+Bold = Main Focus
“Spoils”
Fuck no, but it’s there and beyond this, never seeing the light of day
Spider Queen Reader Fic
Posted on my Quotev and I think also on my Wattpad
Drider reader in a Modded Minecraft World
definitely not done but I know what I wanna do in it
Twelve Forever Butt Witch X Reader Fic
on my Quotev and Wattpad
slime reader
OPM Various X Mysterious Being! Reader
discontinued on Quotev, was gonna be about a reader that was half alien half human
but not completely scrapped, thinking of changing it into a ex-bf!Garou X Monster Reader fic and reader is not gonna be an alien but something else
KND: Perfection
discontinued or hiatus on my Quotev, idk what I’m gonna end up doing with it
based off of an entry on the KND fan wiki that’s not there anymore so it was probably fake but it was compelling
Nomad of Nowhere Various X Reader
Quotev, hiatus for now
starts off as Don Paragon X Reader & reader has a twin brother
Demon’s Life
Quotev, Wattpad?
Fantasy Life 3DS X Reader
Consequences
We Bare Bears Agent Trout X Police Officer Reader
I got ideas for this one so maybe
Genderbend Donna Beneviento X Reader
I have this one all planned out I just didn’t post it anywhere yet and I’ve got the notes all typed out on a draft here so I’ll be posting that after I’m done with the fic just to show my thought process
reader is a muscular woman btw but with like himbo mentality, you’ll see
Journey (Pokemon x Reader OC Fic)
just an excuse for me to show my love of Alolan Grimer and the only pokemon game I ever completed
Got the basics down and it might turn into an OC fic rather than a reader fic (scratch that, it WILL be an OC fic)
non-linear bc i got snippets in my head like a compilation of podcast clips
Royals Fic
Not planned out yet mainly due to potentially offensive content and I don’t want it to be problematic especially when I don’t have the themes worked out at this point
Like, I know what I wanna do with the plot but some of it is really like “why?” and I feel why I just don’t have the words lined up
Lord Shen x Peahen Reader
one-shot
Another fic w/ nobles in it
MC is a bitch, based off of Stella from Helluva Boss as my expectations for her character were too high when I initially saw her in the pilot
The Knight’s Grave (Hollow Knight)
based off of the “Dream No More” ending of the game
just how I’d imagine characters in the game to react to finding the knight’s grave
Fae & human chick
like writing a romance but it’s about a friendship between a fae woman and a human one

I actually had QueerAnon as my number 1 podcast omg. Hopefully that tips off Jordan and Randy that they need to get their asses back to recording.
I honestly think the therapist knows about the show. I mean from what my brother has told me about him, the guy is around the same age as my brother and they’ve talked about movies, tv shows and music so I feel like he either knows it since the beginning or went to look it up. But the idea of him not knowing and just knowing my brother will lose his mind when his beloved show is over, is equally funny. I mean my brother vented to him about Brian getting cancer and about Ethan so he’s seen him at his worst throughout this show.
And as for the last few episodes: His plan is to watch them all at once. One after the other. Today. So I hate to report that the ‘straight man watches qaf in the year of our lord 2023’ is officially coming to an end. Do you remember that scene in Finding Nemo when the fishes try to escape from the tank and the starfish says ‘THE TANK IS CLEAN!’? Well he woke up today, walked into the kitchen and quoted the whole scene but changed it a bit, so it was: ‘good morning! Todays the day! The sun is shining, im watching the last episodes and I am finishing the sho- IM WATCHING THE LAST EPISODES!’ He even filmed himself and sent it to our family group chat and to his friends thinking how funny he is and immediately afterwards I got bunch of texts from our cousins, our uncle, our parents and 3 of his friends. And literally every single one of them is worried how he will handle it. My cousins basically said ‘good luck’ (they know how it ends and they also told majority of the family). My uncle is now fully involved (but only for his entertainment purposes) but he does think my brother might experience a mental breakdown after he sees the finale. His husband and him over the weekend watched the finale to try and judge how he will react and according to my uncle when the credits rolled, his husband looked at him and went ‘oh he is soooo fucked.’ And his friends told me that he told them he thinks it will be a happy finale bc no way would anyone do all that and then not make sure they end up happy, together and in love. They even brought up the Iron Man aftermath and im worried they’re right. So heartbreak is inevitable.
I will try my absolute hardest to send updates as soon as we finish the finale. But I apologize in advance if it either ends up being sent really fucking late at night or really fucking early in the morning. I already know I’m gonna be a mess watching the finale (i think I’ve seen it only a handful of times, maybe even less) but i am not ready to witness that first ever heartbreak due to the finale that my brother is only hours away from experiencing. It’s been years since I first saw it and i still remember how much it hurt so rip to the straight man. So who the fuck knows what his reaction will be to literally any of the next 4 episodes but especially the finale.
I'm guessing that the tumblr fandom is responsible for that podcast's listens this year. And I do hope Spotify wrapped sends up the bat signal that they need to make more episodes! C'mon Jordan and Randy!
I agree, it is just as funny for the therapist to think "I have no idea what is going to happen but Brother Anon is so unhinged about this, no matter what, it's going to be a crisis."
RIP to the tag "a straight man watches qaf us 2000 in the year of our lord 2023" after this week. Btw, instant regret for choosing such a long tag but oh well! I'm not even christian! It is NOT the year of my lord... lol.
I'm glad the whole family is aware that this is going to ROUGH (understatement of the year) on your brother. I think having some things to help him immediately will be helpful - an episode of QueerAnon, a bts youtube clip, a favorite fanfic - and maybe letting him know there is a whole group of us cheering him on? Like he's heartbroken but he has friends he never even knew were out there? IDK.
Good luck. Don't worry about what time your messages come in. I have a super busy day tomorrow, so if I don't get to them, that's not a sign of anything. I just have a doctor's appointment (where I will *not* discuss qaf with my doctor) and then a bunch of appointments straight through until night.
Good luck and godspeed dear sweet anon. I have the feeling you're going to need it.

Things I don’t understand about hockey… part one
Under a read more bc it’s long
Why do they constantly recycle coaches cause like it was a big thing in the media when babcock was let go and when it came out how terrible he was to players he didn’t like. And there were multiple people saying that players in the league liked and respected those two dudes that came out about just how awful he was… And now the dude is being paid millions to coach the Columbus Blue Jackets… like he’s a trash person to players? Why would you want him to coach? And and and even if you don’t care about his rep of being trash to players? Wouldn’t the goal of a coach be getting someone that can help you win Lord Stanley??? Because he wasn’t able to get the leafs out of round one of the playoffs and that is his most recent job recommendation. Or like Peter DeBoer and the way it was CONSTANTLY talked about how he always got his team to the conference finals during his first year, but still hasn’t won a cup. And what happened with the Stars? Got to the conference final, should have probably won it but their game fell apart due to some dumb ass line decisions and lack of adjustments to consistent mistakes. A thing that could have really be predicted from the way they played the kraken because all the same mistakes that led to their downfall to the knights were part of their games against the kraken. But the made the conference final so it’s a win for him? Idk I’m not sooo sure… and like I can and do Blame Suter, I don’t blame Jamie but I can see why people do, however, in my mind most of blame lands with the coach that refused to adjust.
And like they do the same thing with GMs bc the Penguins just hired Kyle Dubas to be their President of Hockey ops and his best record in the playoffs is a Gentleman’s sweep in round two? Like that’s not great? Plus part of the reason that the leafs aren’t able to handle playoffs has to do with their cap situation (according to all the podcasts) and isn’t the GM a major contributing factor to that? So why is hiring Dubas a good idea of you want a cup? (And that was apparently one of his major questions to Crosby before taking the job)… or Treliving being hired for Toronto? The flames only made post season five times under him and were knocked out in round two. How is he gonna help create a team that can get a cup? Especially since he was a major part of the Tkachuk trade and at this point in the season, it’s looking like the Panthers crises that trade bc they are in the Stanley Cup Finals and the Flames didn’t even make it to the playoffs… with Matthew being a major contributing factor to why the panthers are doing sooo well. (I know Tkachuk said he wouldn’t sign again but does that matter when you are looking solely at what Calgary lost in the trade compared to what they gained? And I didn’t watch Hockey last year so I miss Huberdeau being amazing and wasn’t impressed with the Flames games I caught on tv during the season)

random headcanons i have for each om! character teehee
hi it's been a while since ive posted some hcs bc uni has been kicking my a$$! luckily i only have a few papers to tidy up and im done. here r some hcs for each obey me character that ive accumulated over the past few months wink wonk
most are random but some constants you'll find are what i think they smell like, languages they can speak (other than their native (demon/angel) and eng/jp), and music tastes !
lucifer
i have a strong feeling that he showers twice a day: in the morning after waking up and at night before going to bed
his cologne is probably the type that will last in an elevator for like a week after he uses it once. i dont think this mf ever smells like anything other than his cologne
has a secret folder on his phone of semi-nudes and other scandalous pics from when he felt sexy at the time omg
aside from demon language/eng/jp he can speak french and knows latin
listens to classical stuff yea but he also listens to diavolos mixtapes (re: diavolo's section)
not a fan of sweets but will eat sweet things when craving
really bland sense of humor...borderline cringey 😭✋🏻
mammon
has gone to google images and searched for "inspirational quotes tumblr" "gold aesthetic tumblr" & "relatable crush post tumblr" then reposts it onto his socials or just taps thru them and giggles bc he relates
his cologne doesnt last as long as lucifers and probably smells common. he has to reapply a lot but it's a people pleasing smell. it's cheaper hence the constant reapplying
he probably does have an expensive bottle but is the type to totally overspray...eek
he is canonically a car guy 🥲 and probably tells the one in his room good morning & good night + kisses the hood every once in a while. has tons of car magazines
he doesnt really speak other languages but has attempted to learn spanish before
listens to whatever is on the radio. doesnt rly stan anyone but he eventually will listen to mc's playlist and mc's playlist ONLY
levi
lurks on mc's socials ALL THE TIMEEEE like he will rewatch ur stories and scroll thru ur feed and overanalyze ur tweets/rts or blog posts. if ur mc isnt the type to use sns much he still googles ur name all the damn time just to find any sites u might be on fjdjdjdjskks
probably streams on whatever youtube or twitch devildom site equivalent there is, but only has like 40 or so followers. which he is okay with!
until he sees someone else who gets more attention than him. then the envy starts kicking in bad. especially if they suck 🧍🏻‍♀️
classic gamer boy smell. you know, sweat, tears, must, and (sometimes) axe deodorant. lucifer has to do a scent check before he goes out to any event & lets him use his cologne. how sweet!
kpop stan!! more girl groups than anything and his ults are probably GIRLS GENERATION, wonder girls, twice, loona, & red velvet
cried when ioi disbanded and refused to leave his room. the only thing u could hear was downpour on loop at full blast
can also speak korean & communicate in echolocation like dolphins 😏
satan
listens to country music you cant change my mind
smells like whatever environment he is in. he doesnt really have a designated smell just throws some deodorant on and goes about his day.
he's sooooo bad at driving...gets road rage way too often so his license has been REVOKED
but hes totally a backseat driver. needs to be sedated on long trips
do not let him watch finding nemo when luke asks to watch it. it's not worth it. he will cause mass destruction.
if he was a human or lived long term in the human world he totally has the ability to be a doctor
is studying as many languages as possible, but he mostly knows latin & french & german etc etc. wants to learn all the dead languages out of curiousity
asmo
dont think this mf has ever held down a relationship. ever
he doesnt compromise much & is not willing to change his lifestyle to fit an s/o into it. you keep up with how he lives or it just isnt meant to be (but dont worry! he'll eventually learn...maybe,,,,)
has the hardest time out of everyone when it comes to breaking bad habits
his smell varies bc he uses a variety of perfumes (whatever is the most popular at the time) but he probably sticks to floral and fresh scents. he never uses generic people pleaser scents like mammon
listens to electropop, mainstream pop, & some alternative rock
as for languages he too knows french, spanish, italian, etc. in general, if it's a romance language he knows it!
opposite of lucifer in the sense where he loves sweets and will refrain from eating too many bitter things
i think we all know that asmo is the biggest rockstar of the group! he's probably been in a boy band at least once, but now he makes his own music
has tried to teach mammon how to sing once. ended up in a broken piano and bleeding ears...
beel
i feel like he is SO SHY
like unless ur close to him he will not start conversations or anything
i think he listens to r&b a lot ! and jazz 😎 maybe rock as well
smells like ur typical athlete with undertones of wet wipes. he carries them around bc he likes to clean his hands before he eats & is prepared for when theres no sink nearby
he can drive and he drives really well. no rough turns, parallel parks perfectly, and never has problems with merging
driving with beel is probably really soothing. left hand is steering the other is gripping ur thigh 😫
dont think hes really fluent in any other language but hes probably semi fluent in korean because levi wanted beel to help him out
definitely know how to order food in practically every language tho HAHAHA
belphie
he reminds me of randall from monsters inc
smells kinda musty IM SORRY but not the way levi does hes more like the kind of musty u feel or smell when it's a shitty morning
but that's only because hes so lazy, when he cleans up hes like satan
has definitely murdered multiple people before. mc is not the first 😐✋🏻
with that being said belphie has been put into prison at least twice when visiting the human world, the mf had such a strong hatred for humans theres no way he never got into trouble before
lucifer probably broke him out and they used the pen thingies from men in black to erase everyones memory of that 🙄
dont think he listens to anything other than music that'll put him to sleep. really likes lazy song by bruno mars but thinks that bruno mars put too much effort into the song. should have been one acapella verse and then finish
similar to beel hes only semi fluent in one language, probably french bc of lucifer. doesnt remember much but knows a couple of lullabies and bedtime stories
the sandman used to be his bff until they drifted. they do, however, like and comment on each other's sns posts.
diavolo
once he found out who nicki minaj was he became her #1 stan
def an ariana grande stan too 😌
choreographs dances when hes stressed...idk just seems like a diavolo thing to do
also makes rly bad soundcloud rap music sometimes. turns to poetry when hes feeling emo but only lucifer knows this. barbatos is suspicious of him but doesnt have enough evidence to confirm.
his dad is like hudson abadeer from adventure time aka marceline's dad? something must have influenced him to want to unite the 3 realms + he would need the approval to do so, so his dad must be more chill than all the others before him 🧍🏻‍♀️ IDK ok anyway
currently going through his hamilton phase bc of mc. whether mc's intent was to get him hooked onto it or just to explain it bc of something he saw online, he tells everyone that he found out abt it bc of mc!
this man cannot drive his skills are only second to jumin han
not too fond of many languages but knows the widely spoken ones like spanish, mandarin, etc. if it's taught in high school he knows it
smells like a las vegas casino. not sure why but i feel like he does. but there's also an interesting & nice smell to him if he embraces you. it's a smell you cant quite identify. but it smells nostalgic, it's mysterious, and it's tempting.
barbatos
very calm demeanor but underneath hes WILD hes probably done everything at least once oof
he just has a lot of control and stability over himself (must be nice!)
on a more angsty note i feel like he might have had his heartbroken sO BAD IDK he is hurting and maybe that's why hes so willing to obey diavolo and not abuse his time lord power thingies bc he learned his lesson the hard way
mans is so smart he knows every language you could switch languages mid conversation with him and he wouldnt be thrown off. he'd probably start speaking it too.
BUT HE SPEAKS VIET P E R F E C T L Y
listens to the same stuff as lucifer but also likes eminem. likes the movie 8 mile but criticized it heavily
have you ever been to a chinese herb shop? naturally, he smells like that. his room probably smells like it too. he doesnt really have a significant smell like some of the others
when he bakes he smells like whatever hes baking tho
one of the few out of everyone listed to have been able to travel to literally everywhere
solomon
was probably on kitchen nightmares once, but only to get feedback from chef gordon ramsay. then he used his magic to prevent the episode from airing...
was in an orchestra, one of the best times of his life. played the violin. asmo watched him in the audience once, but didnt approach him until well after that performance.
he CANNOT sing. he can, however, rap.
doesnt listen to music. he listens to podcasts! but every now and then he turns on background music, but prefers it to be instrumental stuff
never wears sunglasses. also does not have a driver's license. cannot drive a regular car. could maybe fly an airplane.
due to his immortality he has learned almost every language to exist, but finds himself speaking mandarin the most. knows most dialects too
similar smell to barbatos but u can also smell some sunscreen on him too. like, generic beach day suncreen
he has a lot of pact marks, so he once had the idea to match foundation to his skin. it took him two weeks but he eventually perfected a combination. yes he will help u find ur perfect shade if u ask him to
simeon
another country music man. has also made a tiktok or two to that one song that goes "he cant even bait a hook." they are private tho
angel country music exists and simeon invented it
if he visits the human world and wears more causal clothing he probably tucks his shirt into his pants
wears a speedo at the beach i tell u, speedo at the beach
he can speak german...i can feel it
uses his pointer finger to type and holds the phone like 2 inches away from his face so sometimes his nose will push a key hence all his typos
has no signature smell. he simply smells like your favorite scent all the time. if multiple people are around him at once, everyone smells a different smell. it's pretty rad
"what does he smell like to himself?" u may be asking. hmm...a church? 💀
luke
his first pet was a goldfish and a few months before the exchange program happened, he was given a koi pond!
secretly likes hanging out with levi sometimes just to play with henry. makes him miss his pet fish back home
so his favorite movie is probably finding nemo and he threw a fit when nemo touched the butt
luke is probably learning german bc of simeon, though he'd like to learn more of the dead languages just for fun
i dont think he listens to music often or has any preferences, he just listens to whatever is playing on the radio
but he finds himself listening to the music mc listens to
smells like freshly baked goods all the time. or fresh laundry. but like, not combined. just depends on the day

QUICK NOTE <33
another short series i’m starting, please feel free to drop any requests or asks in my ask box, and i’ll respond as quick as i can :)) (also, TW: slight mentions of drugs)
Tumblr media
𝙳𝙰𝙸𝙲𝙷𝙸
» he’s the one driving, obviously since he’s the most responsible on the road here
» will NOT hesitate to pull over onto the middle of nowhere just to get the gang to stop bickering
» he would try to engage in whatever they’re all chatting about while still keeping his eyes on the road
» this boy knows alll the routes and shortcuts, he don’t need no map!
» ngl although daichi’s a pretty calm person, he isn’t the type of person you wanna get in road rage with
» would put on his scary daichi voice and start cursing at the other drivers
» everyone else is just like :OO
𝚂𝚄𝙶𝙰𝚆𝙰𝚁𝙰
» did someone say snacks?
» mama suga always comes prepared :))
» probably like healthy things like carrots and dip but it hits different on a road trip at 4 pm when you haven’t eaten anything
» MUSIC JAMSSS
» has the best playlist for roadtrips, and since he’s always in shotgun he has no choice but to put them on
» bribes tanaka and noya to be good for the rest of the drive with hidden chocolate bars
» YOU ALREADY KNOW TANAKA AND NOYA ARE GONNA BE SILENT FOR THE REST OF THE DRIVE
𝙰𝚂𝙰𝙷𝙸
» daichi literally payed him to sit inbetween hinata and kags because asahi would stop their arguing in a split second
» most likely just readin through out the drive, drifting off here and there
» instantly woken up everytime by tanaka and noya in the back, laughing their heads off
» would beg suga to put on lana del ray
» gets the middle seat in the middle row, just so his long ass legs can go in between the drivers seat and shotgun, yk what i’m saying?
𝚃𝙰𝙽𝙰𝙺𝙰 𝙰𝙽𝙳 𝙽𝙾𝚈𝙰
» these two are getting put together because why the hell not :)
» two words: ABSOLUTE CHAOS
» these two would sit behind asahi just to kick his seats from the back
» asahi literally threatened them that if they don’t calm down, daichi will not hesitate to trap them in the trunk
» nobody knows what these two dumbasses are doing in the back? meth? coke? probably
» would 100% bang on the window and bark at the other cars just to scare them
» eventually, they’ll lose their energy and fall asleep around 3 hours in
» you already know everyone else in that car is thanking the lord for taking the energy out of these rascals
𝙷𝙸𝙽𝙰𝚃𝙰
» you can’t tell me hinata wouldn’t be the one to listen to music and look outside the window and pretend he’s in a music video
» he’s constantly debating with kags until asahi flicks him in the temple
» would play little games with asahi (asahi’s barely paying attention, but he still chooses to play since he kinda split hinata up from kags)
» i spy, rock paper scissors, chopsticks, all those fun little games
» ceo of “are we there yet?”
𝙺𝙰𝙶𝙴𝚈𝙰𝙼𝙰
» grumpy ass mf.
» wont speak unless it’s to fight with hinata
» tries to sleep but can’t due to the two chaos makers behind him
» eventually loses his shit and them and tell them to stfu, causing daichi to pull over

Would you ever write… the "and there was only one bed" trope?
Figuratively? Yes(couple getting together due to circumstances out of their control and how they react to it,)
Literally? Less chance as a lot of them are either in an established relationship(so no problem if there's only one bed), or filthy rich.

6 August 2021
The sun is shinin', come on get mappy
Ever found yourself floating aimlessly around the alphabet soup of UK government departments doing data, wondering who's responsible for what? Or lost track of all the interesting initiatives that you might be able to get involved with or learn from?
I'm delighted to be running a new project with the ODI that tries to help with that. We're mapping data responsibility and initiatives across the UK government here, so please do tell us what we've missed and comment on what we've already got. It'll be open for comments until Friday 10 September, so you have all summer to contribute.
There's a launch page explaining everything here, and we're also going to be publishing a blogpost a week focusing on a particular area of the ODI manifesto. This week is infrastructure week. Keep an eye on the ODI blog for future ones.
In other news:
A date for your diary - the 22nd Data Bites will be taking place on Wednesday 8 September at 6pm, thanks to ADR UK and the ESRC. Details will appear here in due course - which is also where you can catch up on the previous 21 events.
I'm also chairing an event for IfG at this year's Labour Party conference - more here.
I'm really sad to see this news about Understanding Patient Data (full disclosure - I'm doing some work for them at the moment). Natalie has done a terrific job, and I really hope their work is able to find a home elsewhere - it's more important than ever, given recent events.
Nick Timmins' new report on how the Department for Education handled the pandemic is well worth a read. Warning: contains mutant algorithms. Diginomica pull out some lessons on those here; my piece from last summer on that is here; and there are more links below.
If you enjoyed this account of what allegedly happened to that Spectator piece on Marcus Rashford (h/t Alice), pour yourself a cup of tea and enjoy this story of something similar from my time at the Media Standards Trust.
I did it - my first half marathon since 2019. There's still time to sponsor me and donate to the excellent Tommy's, here.
Warning: Graphic Content will now be taking a break until September. I'll be posting some things on Medium as well as on Twitter in the meantime, so do follow me there. If you need some other data-related newsletters, podcasts or event series to tide you over, there's a list for that. And if you know anyone else who should subscribe, encourage them to start the new school/parliamentary term in September the right way by signing up.
Enjoy the summer, thanks for subscribing, and see you in September
Gavin

Nebuchadnezzar II
[Unfortunately I was not able to write a proper research summary for this topic as I was tight for time, so instead I have simply copied and pasted my notes and selected extracts. It’s messy, but this shows more how my research process went - collating all relevant information, making notes, and then reading it over to select what to use in the podcast script. Enjoy this raw look into my research process!]
It appears that Nebuchadnezzar wanted to be remembered for his domestic activity rather than his military exploits. The extensive building projects undertaken during his reign are widely recorded [ZGM(1] in bricks and cylinders like this one, written by his scribes. Information about his military activity, however, comes to us primarily from Classical and Biblical sources, which can be contradictory at times. The Babylonian Chronicles, a series of tablets detailing major events in Babylonian history, covers some of the early parts of Nebuchadnezzar’s reign in the Nebuchadnezzar Chronicle (now housed in the British Museum), including the Siege of Jerusalem of 597 BC, but events later in his reign come to us almost exclusively from Classical and Biblical texts.
His building projects were guided by principles of utility and adornment, but ‘not without the deeper motives of piety and patriotism’.
Thanks to a firm alliance with former rivals, the Medes, Nebuchadnezzar was free to continue the extensive building programme in the empire, started under his father, Nabopolassar. As well as infrastructure such as extensive canal networks (some of which survive today), dams, and city defences, Nebuchadnezzar put a significant amount of effort into restoring temples. Surviving royal inscriptions detail some forty-odd temples and shrines which ‘received attention’, including Ebabbar. However, outside of Babylon, few non-religious projects were undertaken: whilst his predecessors had tried to unify their state by establishing residence and improving defences in multiple cities throughout the empire, Nebuchadnezzar chose to focus on the city of Babylon. This was, in part, to strengthen the legitimacy of the Neo-Babylonian Empire – having toppled the Assyrians, Nebuchadnezzar’s father made Babylon the ‘imperial centre of Mesopotamia for the first time in over a thousand year, leading to the Neo-Babylonian Empire, claiming imperial continuity as a new dynasty’. Whilst his building activities stretched throughout the empire, Babylon was the centre of the activity. Nebuchadnezzar definitely had a preference for Babylon, which can be seen on many royal building inscriptions – many, including this one, bear the epithet ‘King of Babylon’. Whereas earlier kings had sought outward expansion and viewed empire size as one of the defining measures of success – such as Ahurbanipal, an earlier Assyrian king who described himself as ‘King of the world’ – Nebuchadnezzar appears to have tried to concentrate his efforts of making Babylon and the surrounding cities as developed as possible (quality over quantity, nice). Growing the empire was not the goal. Enriching it was.
Nebuchadnezzar’s domestic policy with regards to vassal states was weak. As long as these states contributed to the enrichment of the empire and the capital, he pretty much left them to their own devices. Certain rebellions, such as in Jerusalem, ‘may have been caused at least in part by the neglect of the Babylonian king to adequately look after his subject states’.
Nebuchadnezzar’s wish was to be remembered as a great and pious leader, working extensively on improving both the infrastructure for daily life and spiritual purposes. Thanks to the substantial number of building inscriptions he left behind, his wish has been fulfilled – his legacy as ‘one of the greatest builders of the kings of the Mesopotamian valley’ has led to him being described by some as ‘one of the greatest rulers of antiquity’.
Nebuchadnezzar is often characterized as either a peaceful, pious builder, or a ruthless warrior king. In truth, he was probably a mix of both.
Nebuchadnezzar’s strengths lay primarily in his inheritance, but he may have unintentionally bequeathed a weaker empire to his successors – had he focused less on Babylon and piety, but instead developed the economic and defensive capacities of other cities, the empire may not have suffered the problems it later did [research more if relevant!].
Under the rule of the Neo-Babylonian kings, the empire’s industrial and commercial sectors appeared to flourish, with Babylonian carpets, cottons, and linens considered some of the most famous of the ancient world. However, this did not mean the agricultural sector was left behind – rather, the fertility of Babylonia was ‘the wonder of the ancient world’. Herodotus described it beautifully: ‘This territory is of all that we know the best by far for producing grain; as to trees, it does not even attempt to bear them, either fog or vine or olive, but for producing grain it is so good that it returns as much as two hundred-fold for the average, and, when it bears at its best, it produces three hundred-fol. The blades of the wheat and barley there grow to be full four fingers broad; and from millet and sesame seed, how large a tree grows, I know myself, but shall not record, being well aware that even what has already been said relating to the crops produced has been enough to cause disbelief in those who have not visited Babylonia’ (Herod., I. 193). Whilst Herodotus is known for embellishing his histories, the impressive agricultural sector was, in part, due to Nebuchadnezzar’s extensive building projects, which included a system of canals and irrigation throughout Babylonia. These canals and the modifications made to the Euphrates allowed trade to occur both within and without the empire with much more ease.
‘a Babylonian army under Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem and took Jewish prisoners of war back to Babylon. The emotional turmoil of these times resonates in the writings of the Hebrew prophets and the biblical book of Lamentations.’
Babylon: ‘Rising from the palace’s north-eastern corner may have been the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, a series of earthen terraces that supported a forest of trees supposedly an architectural girl from Nebuchadnezzar to his Persian wife who pined for the landscape of her mountainous homeland.’
‘Babylon became legendary for its magnificence’
Sat on throne for 43 years, one of the longest reigns in Mesopotamian history
‘He had extensive military experience even before he became king, including his defeat of Egypt’s army at Carchemish. In foreign affairs, his eyes looked to the west, for he coveted the tribute he could exact from the trade rich cities of Palestine and Syria, and the timber he could harvest from the mountains of Lebanon. Of course, the pharaoh of Egypt wanted the same things, and that put Babylonia and Egypt on a collision course. When the kingdom of Judaea twice rebelled against its Babylonian masters, Nebuchanezzar twice laid siege to Jerusalem, destroying the city the second time, despoiling and burning its Holy Temple, and marching thousands of Jees into captivity. Domestically, Nebuchadnezzar focused on large public works projects.’
Capture of Jerusalem (597 BC): First Exile of the Jews
Second Capture of Jerusalem (586 BC): Temple destruction + second Exile + Babylonian Captivity
‘In the story, Daniel and his three friends work for the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar and win his admiration because of their God-given wisdom and skill. Because of Daniel’s ability to interpret a royal dream, Nebuchadnezzar declares the Lord to be the one true god. However, because Daniel and his friends refuse to worship a golden idol of the king, he throws them into a fiery furnace. When they emerge unscathed, he restores them to their position and reaffirms his faith in God, as he does again after Daniel interprets yet another dream. Later, Nebuchadnezzar is slain and is replaced on the throne by Darius the Mede. Arrested for praying to someone other than Darius, Daniel is thrown into a lions’ den, but through the power of prayer is saved once again. In recognition of this miracle, Darius then declares that Daniel’s god should be worshipped throughout the empire.’
‘The acknowledgement of the Lord by foreign kings and the prophecy of the Jewish people’s ultimate triumph over their enemies served to reassure the Jews with confidence in their own divinely ordained future in the face of centuries of conquest and oppression by others.’
The Neo-Babylonian kings also seemed to wish to hark back to the old days of Babylon. This is seen in Nabonidus’ archaeological activities, but also in royal literature, of which the literary style an imitation of Babylonian literature. ‘Even the forms of the characters are modelled after the inscriptions of the time of Khammurabi’. This nostalgia is, interestingly, paralleled by Egypt in the same era.
Inheritance of strong scribal practice from Assyrians.
Cylinder = important - direct speaking from Nebuchadnezzar about what he wants to be remembered for, as opposed to how external sources (i.e. Jews, Greeks) viewed him + empire
Most Assyrian kings used royal inscriptions to record their versions of historical events, but the Neo-Babylonian kings shifted away from this and focused many of their royal inscriptions on describing their building work and even their own archaeological excavations. Controlling legacy? How they wish to be remembered? Public and long-lasting displays of piety?
Nebu able to foster literature and architecture, father bequeathed empire not threatened by dangerous enemies
‘ancient learning found a second Hammurabi in him and Babylon rose at once to the very zenith of power and glory’
Side-note: Given that both sieges of Jerusalem undertaken by Nebuchadnezzar are recorded in the Hebrew Bible - in which the second siege of Jerusalem in 587 BC led to the destruction of Israelite nationhood - Israel has reason to remember his name and actions. This has some particularly interesting implications on modern politics: as part of my reading for my IR modules, I learned that Saddam Hussein liked to draw comparisons between himself and Nebuchadnezzar, aiming to return Iraq to its former Babylonian glory. Given his ideological opposition to Israel’s existence, Israel must have perceived him as an even greater threat because of this comparison - an Arab leader who wished to be the one to destroy Israel. I’d only ever read about his comparisons in relation to his delusions of grandeur, not necessarily the specific impacts this comparison may have had on foreign policy, so I could be wrong, but it’s an interesting thought. Not necessarily relevant to my object, but still exciting to see the legacy and myth of Nebuchadnezzar live on to the modern day and having implications on my other fields of study!

thank you !
Tumblr media
^^ dis gif isn't mine. but that's totally my face.
Here it is! This is my big dumb 'thank-you' post that I've been meaning to write. So if you weren't aware, I've actually closed this blog (aside from some random posts about Logan and a Batman Podcast - you should listen to it) due to some major, major problems with the DC fandom that I find toxic and quite frankly disgusting. But das stuff that sadly I can't change so I'm doing what's best for me and getting my ass outta here before my love for Batman is forever ruined by blind and immature fanboys.
i started writing bryce around about 2015. My first blog was called surgitisms but I changed it because someone made some burnbook callout about me copying someones url (I had no idea that blog existed rofl - surgit is latin for 'rise'). I then moved to rageinyourbones (shoutouts to joseph gordon levitt) where i spent most of my time, developing this character that wasn't even my idea - it was just a passing remark from a lovely actress by the name of Natalie Dormer. now as you're aware (and as i continually apologize for) i fucked up on that blog, and i've done my best to reach out and make amends with the people i offended (and they were super gracious and accepted my apology). but that negative bollocks aside, i grew up so much on that blog. i learned some amazing things about myself, i learned some bad things about myself, and most importantly i created a character that i personally believe is different to bruce wayne. i ended up headcannoning late at night, thinking about how she would act differently to bruce, about how she would interact with certain characters etc etc etc.
but what really made all the difference was the people i met.
you guys are fucking amazing. i mean lets be real - the tumblr rp community can be fucked sometimes. we've all seen it, but what i love is that we tend to (80% of the time) treat each other as real human beings and see that what we're really here for is just the love of these dumb fictional characters. they give us a break from the savagery of life and its endless woes. i am so, so so grateful and so so so blessed to have known the people i have on here. people whom i met on rageinyourbones and followed me across to here, and people whom i met here. holy bollocks im rambling - im just gonna tag some specific people who really really made my life on here so enjoyable. the rest i'll just lump into one big post because i'm lazy like that.
@fracturedportrait - harmony. i remember meeting you the first time. i remember it so clearly. you were so chill, so spunky (god i feel old using that word), and you had such a passion for your oc. i remember the first plot we had, the inspiration we shared... who knew that it was the beginning of my greatest friendship and my #1 OTP for bryce. you were the first person whom i ever actually spoke to off tumblr (remember when i called you?? and you heard my dumb aussie accent??). i remember legitimately getting teary over memes, i remember smiling so much during our threads, i remember (and still do) laugh about us talking about how our sin is like a lovely vintage of wine. your writing consistently, unimaginably, pushes and has pushed me to better mine. with every post you made, you helped improve my writing. you are such a blessing to me and i am not going to just let this stay as some dumb tumblr friendship. we'll face time, and i'll be sure to credit you when i'm on the red carpet with natalie dormer being like 'so what made you want to write this film about a female batman?'. i'll just be like 'yo there was this really cool chick who wrote a vampire and she told me to just write this film'.
@halysborn - SWAN. ho man. do you remember when i wrote that giant meta about how dick literally changed not just bryce's life, but bruce's? i firmly believe that dick is the most important character in bruce's life. and i mean i'm talking on the same level as alfred - even more. he's the TRUE son. the son whom saved him. like i just cry about how bruce says that line - 'sometimes i think i've never done any good in my life. then i look at dick and realize i'm wrong' or whatever that actual phrase is. i PHYSICALLY VOM WHEN PEOPLE SHIP THEM. but yo that's other stuff. what's important is that you have supported me selflessly and without strings. you've supported me here, you've supported me over on deshibcsara, you've just been a consistent rock, an unyielding foundation of encouragement. i still, and will NEVER delete that voice recording where you talk about me and my love for batman. it gives me such hope and reminds me that, yeah i fuck up, but i've at least affected someone else's life and how they see batman. my only regret is that i was so goddamn slow with replying to our stuff. and that was literally because i felt like you deserved nothing but my absolute best. you are incredible, and from one aussie to another, i love you brocookie!
@femmekill - could u pls stop spamming my facebook wall with memes?? SIKE I LIED. I FUCKING LOVE IT. my mum literally asked me the other night 'who is -insert your real name-?' and i was like 'oh thats my wife' and she was like '???' and i just said 'dont even BOTHER trying to understand'. you have been nothing but optimistic about me. you consistently, relentlessly see the good in me. i dont think there's ever been a time where like i've felt wronged by you? or at the very least felt like i was a burden to you? you never fail to spread positivity. even when you were feeling like shit and i tried to cheer you up, it's like you turned it on me and were like 'nah gus you're not cheering me up IM CHEERING YOU UP - thats how it works'. im so fucking whipped by you, because you're just such a blessing to my life. the day we shared FB's was like the day i realized 'WELP IM IN THIS MARRIAGE FOR LIFE NOW'. when it comes to your writing - i'm just breathless. the tumblr rp fandom does not deserve you. keep doing your thing man - don't ever let douchebag anons change that.
@marblebelow - I SINCERELY HOPE YOU STILL HAVE THE RECORDING OF ME SINGING 'THE CONFRONTATION'. especially with the 'DUN DUN DUN DUUUUUUN'. that shit is lit. yo but mikel really. the days of us writing together - writing fisk/bryce and then writing jim/bryce... i value it so much. you've taught me to pursue every little nuance in bryce's character. and i mean that - you ask me tiny little questions, and holy crap i end up going into a massive internal investigation. and worst of all (or best??) you jsut lavish me with genuine, kind words. i regret that we didnt get to write much more (both of us having major stress/overwhelmed issues), but dude, like, never stop being you - you have such overwhelming, unimaginable depths of creativity. even if you don't realize it, or feel like you don't, believe me - you do. it sounds like -- errr.... arrogant? but ive spent the last six years studying writing/fiction/film and just immersing myself in it so i feel like i have SOME credibility - you really really do have a gift.
@ivyworn - 'yes hello i'd like to report a murder? the victim is ME' aka this is what happens whenever we talk. so we never actually got to do much writing, but honestly? i literally feel like we did writing in the SPIRIT with all of our tumblr IMs and just the amount of shit talking we did. PUMA. LEST WE FORGET. PUMA. no but real talk, i was supposed to send you a birthday gift aka im still gonna get my ass onto paypal and do that SO DONT YOU LEAVE YOUR BLOG. AND YOU CANNOT SAY NO. i've never met anyone whom has such an in-depth love and understanding for ivy. i remember chatting about Cast Shadows with you and the level of complexitity between Batman and Ivy. i mentioned this but Batman/Ivy is literally my OTP for Bruce. i just think it is such an interesting avenue that no writer (post Cast Shadows) has explored. whenever we spoke, i had such a smile on my face, i cannot even begin to desribe it. i really really hope life goes well for you and treats you with the care and respect you DESERVE.
@psyclownsis @scarestress tags both blogs bc i have no idea where you are these days. so i already recorded that voice meme thing talking about you piri - but i literally just want to further express my admiration and gratitude for you. you've stuck by me, you've pulled me aside and been like 'oi gus you're being a douche stop it', and you've just supported me and taken such an interest in this dumb character i write that literally just blows me away. the fact that we barely write but i still feel so close to you and so valued by you is just a testament to the power of tumblr rp friendships. we don't NEED to write together to be friends and to respect and admire each other. AND LORD KNOWS i admire you. i admire your dedication, i admire your 'idgaf' attitude. and honestly i just admire your unrelenting loyalty to people.
because i've literally written an essay - the rest of these tags are people that i admire and love, even if we haven't had much chance to interact.

The Exam
Best Music Moment of 2017:
Tumblr media
Code: dancing out the entire wedding reception playlist with my best girl on an empty concrete slab on a breezy texas night
BC: -The absolute stellar dance party at Codemin’s Wedding; most notably:
     “Carol” by The Rolling Stones
“Enjoy the Silence” by Depeche Mode
     “Crystal” by New Order
-OK Computer’s 20th Anniversary and the listening/reflection that came with it -My four year old, Emmett, learning “Maps” on the drums pretty much on his own
JD: February: Watching the “Emotional Rescue” scene in A Bigger Splash:
youtube
March: Seeing Stop Making Sense on the big screen at my favorite theater with m’gal and a David Byrne Q&A after the screening. April: The dance party of a lifetime at Code and Arden’s wedding. November: Watching Parquet Courts play “You’ve Got Me Wondering Now” for the first time in years.
C: "Born to Run" at a good friend's, Brian Ferguson's, wedding.
Nasty: This playing at the end of Leftovers Season 3, Ep 5 - "The Most Powerful Man in the World"
Bronco: Sitting on my back porch with Brenny, sipping down some delicious whiskey drinks and listening to the new Mastodon on a surprisingly unshitty Amazon bluetooth speaker. Watching his face on the breakdown in Jaguar God was quite entertaining. Also listening to the Squalus album (the metal interpretation of Jaws) with the kids, my oldest asking what it was, and him saying he wants to watch Jaws now. He was especially fascinated by the USS Indianapolis part of the story.
Laser: This
Chap: My 17 has been dominated by the two new ladies in my life. I made this mix for them:
and played it for them on random the morning they were born. This was the first song that came on:
and I finally broke down with emotion after the 36 hour experience while holding one of them while this song was playing:
Best Shows Seen in 2017:
BC: This first 60 seconds of this:
youtube
Nasty: Future Islands & Action Bronson
Larse: Future Islands with Maddie, Nasty, and Sam; Action Bronson at The Rave - pretty sure I got a contact high just from being in the show
C: War on Drugs
Bronco: Mastodon
Codem: lvl up - beat kitchen kitten forever - subterranean downstairs ovlov - beat kitchen pqc - the bottle girlpool - logan square auditorium moving units’ joy division cover set - the bottle PAWS - cobra lounge a. savage - the bottle pictureplane
JD: 1. William Basinski and Julianna Barwick at National Sawdust 2. No Age at Elsewhere 3. Parquet Courts and B-Boys at Elsewhere 4. Liars at Warsaw 5. Deerhunter and Eleanor Friedberger performing while Bradford Cox painted her portrait onstage at Warsaw 6. LCD Soundsystem at Brooklyn Steel 7. Yo La Tengo in Central Park 8. Andrew WK at Warsaw 9. Vince Staples at Panorama Fest 10. Wire at Baby’s All Right 11. Vagabon at Brooklyn Bazaar
Confession of 2017:
Bronco: I listened to the New Kids On The Block offering of 2017 "Thankful" (it was fucking terrible).
C: Still haven’t listened to LCD Soundsystem
Code: -knowing the backstory, the mount eerie album was probably the best album i heard this year, but it was too dang sad to listen to more than a handful of times. -i still loved that brand new song despite the lead cat being a creep. -i thought that this year was pretty rough for music, but my tune changed after looking back through my top tracks.  maybe there were just so few full albums that i liked? -i fast fwd'd through every SNL musical guest this calendar year, but i did catch the tom petty tribute from the vegas countrymin.
BC: I don’t hate that objectively awful Chainsmokers/Coldplay song because it reminds me of this year’s BOB since Creevey played it every twenty minutes for 36 holes.
Larson: Listened to more rap this year than I think I have in past years; must be Nasty's Lincoln influence!
Nasty: I listened to more podcasts than music in 17.
Biggest Disappointment of 2017:
Tumblr media
Laser: LCD Soundsystem
Codem: -no chromatics this year. -the two lcd shows that i saw this year.
Chap: The albums. I would not be shocked if I didn't listen to any of my top 15 all the way through after today.
Bin: DJT
JD: Mondanile
BC: Real Estate.  I think they need to invite the perv back into the band.
Bronco: Bison, Monolord, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, And So I Watch You From Afar. They all put out albums this year, and I've like their stuff in the past, but they did little to nothing for me this time around.
Most Overrated of 2017:
Codem: slowdive, but also twod and japanese breakfast
Bin: Bodak Yellow / Cardi B
Larse: LCD Soundsystem
Bronco: -Pallbearer - just don't like the guy's voice, and though they're slow as shit, there's no good riffs or anything to connect with for me. -Code Orange - hardcore band that I just don't get. One of those 'motherfucker I'm the best!' type super close to being alt-right supremecy type bands even though they're probably completely against it. They're at the top of most metal lists this year. I've given them 4-5 spins, most in reaction to the praise they're getting, but I just don't get it. -Royal Thunder - just one big case of blue balls. All of their songs seemingly build toward a climax that never happens. It's just so blech.
JD: Did the music press even treat anything as a lasting work of art and not ephemeral content to get through a week or two of famous personality driven clicks? King Krule?
BC: Lorde, I think?  I mean, that album’s gotten a lot of love this year and I thought the lead single – “Green Light” – was hot garbage. It spawned a conspiracy theory in my mind that Taylor Swift was proactively influencing and then purposefully sabotaging the work of her close friends (see Lorde, Haim, et al).
Make it Stop 2017
Tumblr media
Bronco: Sex monsters. Can we just take all white dudes in powerful positions, assume they've sexually assaulted at least one person, imprison them, and move on? We could take everything they have, give it all to Native American tribes, then force them to walk their own trail of tears to live out their lives in the desserts of New Mexico, and force them to build the wall, but it would just be a wall around their sad sex monster reservation.
Also, Taylor Swift.
Nasty: I didn't have the luxury of expending any real hate on music this year... which I'm just now recognizing as a bad thing.
JD: -Unceasing sadness and anxiety about the present and future. -Jack Antonoff
BC: Life on this planet.
Code: any rap station that i hear in an uber. that cardi b song was playing every time i caught a cab at 5:30 a.m. to play golf.
Larson: U2
Biggest TBH Regret of 2017:
BC: Not seeing NIN at RiotFest
Larson: Skipping the Car Seat Headrest show at Summerfest because I could tell Maddie didn't want to leave Jonas' party (party was fun, so not a real loss, just wish I would have seen the show).
Nasty: Not even giving new artists a chance. I'll listen to an average album from The National 10x's before I give someone new a shot.
Codebreaker: not having an opportunity to karaoke badu's tyrone
JD: -Had the worst fever of my life during LCD and could only manage standing in the back shivering. -Forgetting to go see Dinner at Baby’s All Right. -Not enough time with Bjork, Miguel, and Blanck Mass.
Bronco: Fucked up the family calendar maintenance and ended up not being able to see the Toadies and Local H. I was pissed at my wife, but it wasn't the end of the world. I haven't listened to either in forever, and the listen I gave to the Toadies latest offering didn't knock my socks off. It was really just for nostalgic purposes. Still it sucked to have to miss it despite my best efforts to bring it to her attention multiple times.
Detective Murtaugh of 2017:
Tumblr media
NACK: I had two separate opportunities to see LCD, and just didn't feel like putting in the effort. Was going to put this as a regret, but I don't regret it.
Code: i skipped 7 shows that i had tickets for and left 6 shows early. two shows i left early due to brightness of lights.  mmmmmnhh
JD: Couldn’t hear for 18 hours after No Age. Needed two Tylenol for the headache I gave myself during “You’ve Got Me Wondering Now” at PQ Quartz.
BC: Having no idea who either the SNL host or the musical guest was for three straight weeks.  Tiffany Haddish? Saoirse Ronan? SZA? I’m too old for this shit…
Nasty: Carson, Maddie, Sam and I went to watch the IU game this weekend with one of Carson's co-workers (an IU grad) who is 23.... I got rolling on a rant about how important it is to enjoy your 20s because after the impending onslaught of weddings and babies life basically isn't any fun anymore. Suspect it was a little too impassioned by the end.
Bronco: I was enrolled in a three month coding bootcamp to learn Web Development. Aside from the two older ladies (50+) and the weird Brazilian idiot (45+), I was the oldest person in the room by probably an average of 13 years. They are all for the most part life-pivoting in to the dev world and they all have all the time in the world to learn new shit, do whatever they want, whenever they want...goddamnit I miss that. So maybe this is my "too married and fathered for this shit" section of the exam.
C: Wife’s Pregnancy
Laser: Every time I wake up with a fucking hangover and tell myself that I’m not gonna drink like that again only to get back on the saddle the next available opportunity.
Resolution for 2017 Update:
BC: Put a goddamn band together. How it went:
Tumblr media
C: Check out some jazz/blues in Chicago. How it went: FAILED
Larson:  Focus on the shit I really care about instead of trying to listen to everything posted on the thread…I’m just going to have to be honest with myself and realize I ain’t got time for all this media! How it went: Terrible; found myself listening to Timeless Pop Rock hits playlist more than anything else.
Chap: Check out more of the recommendations on the TBH thread. Try to organize get-togethers around TWO shows. How it went: Actually not bad. I had a few solid period during nap times when I didn't feel like working. I think I was able to listen to every album I wanted to at least once.
Code: make concerted effort to listen to music that i liked in previous years in addition to music from the current year. How it went: i nailed my resolution, as i devoted four full months to the grateful dead and it was the best musical trimester of the year for me. it was really interesting to watch all of the new music pile up and never once feeling compelled to listen to something else. god damn did the '77 version of the band have it all figured out. i could listen to any uptown mississippi halfstep toodeloo from that year at any time.
Bronco: Learn the guitar. I’ve been fooling around with Rocksmith (guitar hero with real guitar) and I want to push myself to execute the more complex chords, not just stick to the powerchord simple songs like Blitzkrieg Bop, and start learning how to build and execute a solo. I also want to distill my own whiskey, build a garden shed from scratch, and learn to code. How it went: I haven't quite mastered the guitar, but I can play a few songs fairly well. I did not start working on my own whiskey or build a garden shed from scratch...yet. But I did learn to code. I am now at conversational levels of fluency with Javascript and at "donde es el bano" levels with Ruby and Python.
Nasty: See a show in NY with JD. How it went: Not great, Bob! I barely made it down the street to see Action Bronson with Laser
JD: Seeing more shows with you guys is an evergreen resolution. How it went: To quote BC,
Tumblr media
Resolution for 2018:
BC: No more resolutions
C: Catch some jazz in Chicago
Laser: get my list in on time!
Chap: While I didn't have the occasion to catch shows this year, I anticipate doing so in '18 due to some changes afoot.
Codem: make more playlists for my wife
Bronco: Get in shape. I want to stick to a schedule of running all year round. I ran a 10K back in June, then needed to recover for a bit, been recovering ever since...Fat Dad needs to keep running all year round without excuse, especially given that we go skiing between Xmas and New Year's and I'm gonna be a floppy legged mess. During those runs, I'll try to listen to new material each time.
Bin: I'm just going to keep saying "get to NY for a show with JD" until I make it happen.
JD: See you gents more often with or without a show attached.
Most Anticipated of 2018:
Tumblr media
C: MBV
JD: MBV, No Age, Panda Bear, something surprising
Code: chromatics (i think it's really coming this year), mbv, no age, DOM, CCFX full album
Bronco: Tool. Fourth year's the charm...fuck those guys. It better suck me off when it finally does come out. Also a new Sleep album and a new High on Fire album...still waitin' on those too.
BC: Simple Minds, Vampire Weekend, Kanye
Nasty: Kanye, ASAP Rocky, Rhye, Chromeo, Vampire Weekend
Chap: After a quick glance at the list... Vampire Weekend, Kanye, Chromatics
Larse: Honestly don't even know what is on the horizon, just hope I can listen to it with this net neutrality bullshit!

Life is short.  Sometimes we need to fight, and sometimes we need to run.  So what does that all have to do with #BCwildfires, How to Watch Game of Thrones, & GoT Pork Pie Recipe?  Read on…
My Family and the #BCwildfires
Last week a large forest fire began which is threatening my hometown.  After a few days of erratic and violent winds to help the fire pick up and spread, the community in the Interior of BC was evacuated.  Thankfully my parents are fine, and they were already prepared for evacuation, which is good because with it came time to evacuate the town, residents were given under 30 minutes to pack and go!
It was a stressful weekend, and while that was going on my sister (Devi), bro-in-law (Sam), and nephews were visiting.  They too needed to navigate their way around multiple closed highways in order to return to their home, north of the fires.  Devi, Sam, and myself enjoy apocalyptic/natural disaster stories and movies, and like to play the “What would you do if…?” game.  Most often this is in the form of a zombie apocalypse scenario, but you get the idea.
In fact, recently I listened to a couple podcasts that had me re-evaluating the places that I would want to be during different events.  Fault Lines is about survival of an earthquake, “the Big One” which is supposed to destroy the West Coast, not just during the quake, but hours, days, weeks, and months after the quake.  2050: Degrees of Change is about what life could look like in 2050 due to climate change.  Both podcasts delve into aspects that other similar features do not.  They make you realize how ill prepared you are, and force you to look at aspects of life that you might just chalk up to “future-me’s problems”.
So it goes without saying that there was a lot of discussion about strategies, where to go, when to go, what to bring, what dangers or frustrations may popup (such as power outages, vehicle gas-shortages, grocery shortages, and other drivers making scary decisions or putting other people in danger around them during the evacuation), how to get help, how long will people be affected, what happens if the roads to the east are closed as well (now that fire has closed the highways to the north and south of them), the flow of information and those who rely on social media for their “facts” (“Why isn’t the news saying anything about the road closure at Little Fort?”), and everything else.  You get the picture.
Days leading up to the evacuation we were trying to convince Mom & Dad to head to friends in Vancouver, well out of the fire areas.  I still don’t know why they didn’t go there, or why they waited so long to leave.
Well, they are all safe at my sister’s place at the moment.  But it makes me wonder, do you have an escape plan?  Do you know what you would take?  What would you take??  Would you be ready to go within 20-30 minutes of being told that you have to leave, maybe never to see your stuff again?  Obviously some of these answers are going to be different if you’re facing a zombie apocalypse vs. a British Columbia wildfire, where you are when things go south, what season you’re in, etc.  But have you prepared at all?  Camping supplies in your car with an emergency kit?  Solar battery for your phone/light/radio?  Food and water?
Game of Thrones – Season 7
The seventh season of the TV series Game of Thrones is set to premiere on HBO on July 16, 2017, and conclude six weeks later.  This is one of the few series that I like to watch as it airs.  Remember?  Like when we were kids, waiting each week for the next episode.  Not like most of my marathon sessions of shows where I knock out a season in a day or two.  The other series, of course, is the Walking Dead (I told you I like apocalyptic shows!).
The problem is of course that not everyone has HBO!  Grrrrrrrr!!!!
The solution?
How to Watch Game of Thrones – 5 Ways
1)  You find someone who has HBO and is a fan, befriend them, and get the all-important invitation to come over for dinner and a show for the next 7 Sundays (thanks for the last few years Andrew!).
2)  You avoid everyone who has watched the show long enough to download some pirated version, watch it as soon as possible, and then return to circulation now that you’re safe from spoilers.
3)  You spend the money to upgrade your cable package for the next couple months.  This option allows you to then find some poor sap who will then suck up to you and cook you dinner every Sunday for the next couple months (you’re welcome Andrew!).
4)  Pretend that you have better things to do with your life and that you can wait a few years for the series to come out in box sets of some technology that you hopefully have.  There are obvious problems with this solution:  everyone knows that you actually didn’t have better things to do, nobody will be around to share in the moments with you, and, depending on the social circle you’re in, you are now culturally irrelevant (don’t worry, it’s not the worst thing to not know some cultural references.  Unless you’re one of those people who have never seen the original Star Wars movies.  Seriously.  You can’t trust those people.  It’s like they’re not even part of the same reality as the rest of us…).
5)  This may actually be the best option.  And strangely, I just discovered it.  You can watch the new season of Game of Thrones with HBO on Amazon Channels!!!  (Bad news: This is not available in Canada, so please look at the previous options.)
The opening to the Game of Thrones Season 7 trailer makes me think of the forest fires surrounding my parents….
GoT Pork Pie Recipe
Since it starts this weekend, and since I have a Night King mask, it seemed only fitting to make a GoT Pork Pie recipe.  There are a number of websites about Game of Thrones food, btw.  A lot of which is quite paleo/primal (check out the Basic Foodstuffs on this GoT Wiki).
The Inn at the Crossroads has a number of recipe based on George RR Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice books (GoT).  They even have a recipe book (print and ebook).  My GoT Pork Pie recipe is inspired by their “Lord Manderly’s Pie”, though with the crust of our own Beef Thai Pie, and our own seasoning.
I can’t wait for Game of Thrones season 7 this Sunday!  It’s gonna be epic!  I’ll be honest, while preparing the GoT Pork Pie recipe, I got through all of season 6 again (yeah, writing this one took a while!).
