“You will never mention this,” Damian hisses at her.

“Sure Damian,” Marinette giggles as the boy holds tight around her middle.

The snowmobile kicks up snow as they speed along. Even with the rush of speed Marinette couldn't help but worry about her parents. Were they worried? Were they looking for her? Were they hurt? But despite all that, she stayed with Damian. When she had told him her concerns he had assured her that they would likely meet her Maman there. Marinette couldn't see why she would, but she trusted Damian.

They dodged through the trees. Marinette was better on the snowmobile because of her Nona’s (secret) motorcycle lessons. Damian was forced to hold tight or get blown off the vehicle. Marinette follows the markers coming out on the other side of the forest a large white expanse of snow. She parks by the waiting cabin.

Damian leads the way inside, cautiously walking in but there's no one there. Frowning Damian goes back into the cold pulling his ‘borrowed’ coat on tighter. Marinette has no interest in going back out in that cold, instead lighting the fire. She looks around its small but there are two rooms and more importantly, both are stocked with warm clothes. Even if they don't fit Marinette is willing to wear them after being stuck in the same outfit the entire time they were on the boat.

The fire warms up the cabin but Damian's still not back. Resigning herself to facing the cold Marinette goes back out. Damian's standing in front of the cabin, arms crossed, footprints everywhere a give away that he had been walking around. He didn't acknowledge her, whether he actually knew she was there or not was beside the point. Still, Marinette decided to have a little fun. Using the snow on the deck's railing she made a snowball carefully aiming for Damian's head.

“What are you doing?!” He yells getting hit square in the back of the head.

“Snowball fight?” Marinette asks meekly, hiding partly behind the railing.

“Tt don’t be so childish,” Damina turns away looking back over the snow.

“I am a child,” Marinette comes down the stairs to stand next to him, “And so are you, come on,”

“I refuse to partake in something so immature,” Damian huffs pulling his arm out of her grip.

“Scared you can’t beat me?” Marinette teases, bending down to make another snowball.

“I have trained as an assassin since birth!” Damian shouts indignantly.

“Have you trained in snowball combat?” He dodges her throw this time.

Giving in Damian scoops up a handful of snow, failing miserably at forming it. Marinette doesn't correct him just makes an obvious show at making her next snowball. Damian picks it up and they fall into all out war. Marinette uses the side of the cabin as a shield against the assault, Damian prefers the trees. She grows bored, wandering into the trees to find Damian. It's quiet in there, just the sound of her footsteps and some distant animals. Marinette lets her guard down for a moment and that is when Damian chooses to strike. He drops down from the tree above her the mother of all snowballs and dunks it directly on her head. Marinette yelps starling at the cold rush as it goes down her coat.

“I am the victor,” Damian puffs out his chest looking awful proud for winning a 'children's game'.

“You're a jerk that's what,” Marinette brushes the snow out of her hair.

“Don't be a poor loser Dupain-Cheng,” Damian chides walking back to the cabin.

“How did you even get the snowball up there?” Marinette doesn't wait for him to answer lighting up with an idea, “We should build a snowman!”

It turns more into Marinette making a snowman while Damian questions what she's doing with a layer of insults. He kind of reminds her of Chloe, except Chole would have thrown a fit a hundred times over at this point. Also, Chloe wouldn't have played with Marinette. Not that Damian really does, but it doesn't seem like he doesn't want to. It’s like he doesn't know how.

“Dupain-Cheng why do you insist on getting rid of our warm clothing?” Damian asks as she comes back with an armful of clothes.

“Because a snowman has to have a hat and gloves,” Marinette dumps the clothes on the ground, “Also arms, Damian can you go find a couple of sticks?”

Damian rolls his eyes by goes anyway. Marinette fixes on the hat and is adding eyes and buttons when Damian returns.

“Damian that's a tree!”

“You didn't specify size!”

It’s not a problem anyway. They break off a couple of branches for the arms and chop the rest into firewood. Damian of course lords over how much better he is at cutting it than Marinette.

“You’re just slowing me down Dupain-Cheng,”

“Well, then I guess I’ll just go back inside,”

“That would be preferable to this,” Damian scoffs, Marinette brings down the ax in one last big swing, cutting the log clean into.

While Damian is busy looking shocked she leaves him going inside.  Feeling bad Marinette decides to bake some cookies might as well while they’re stuck here until the people picking them up to come. Damian trudges inside when the cookies are out of the oven and Marinette is fixing them some hot chocolate instead.

“Still cold?” Marinette asks, Damian is carrying firewood inside.

“I am not cold,” Damian scoffs, brushing snow off. Giving himself away as he sits right next to the fire.

“These will warm you up,” Marinette places the hot chocolate down followed by a plate of cookies.

“Tt,”

“It’s childish to refuse food,” Marinette chides already knowing where he’s going with this.

Damian scoffs again but takes the hot chocolate while Marinette dips a cookie in hers. She thinks back to what he said about being an assassin. He had stopped threatening her after she told him her Maman name so he probably knew her. It actually made a little too much sense that her Maman was an assassin too. She had thought about it but this only confirmed her suspicions as more than just imagination.

“So do you like being an assassin?” Marinette tries for a conversation, “I get the feeling from Maman she didn’t like it so much,”

“Sabine was one of the best assassins in the world,” Alright, no denying it now.

“You can be the best at something and still not be happy,” Marinette says gently, gaining a little worry for Damian.

“That's of little importance,”

“What!?” Alright, a lot of worry, “It’s very important!”

“Not to an assassin,” Damian looks away, Marinette stands up to be in his line of sight.

“Then you don’t have to be an assassin,” She puts her hands on her hips, authoritative as she ever gets.

“Yes I do,” Marinette doesn't accept that fixing him with a hard stare until Damian is compelled to add,  “... I’m the son of Batman,”

“Then you definitely don’t have to be an assassin!” Marinette proclaims leaning into his space, “You can be a hero!”

“... no I-”

“Come on I’ll help you,” She smiles widely holding out her hand.

“You’ll be my sidekick?” Damian asks, taking her hand.

“No, you’re partner,” Marinette pulls Damian to stand up, “Equal,”

A green light shines through the window behind them as if lighting up the occasion. Marinette walks over to the window a perfect view of the northern lights.

“How pretty,” Marinette sighs watching out the window with Damian.

“Ok,” Marinette looks over Damian's not watching the light show, he’s watching her.  

Marinette smiles and they turn back to the window watching as lights dance across the sky.

“Don’t you have other responsibilities that would impede our agreement?” Damian asks eventually

“Nope,”

We're not like you fancy country slickers. My wife and I are just humble city folk from the upper-middle-middle-class suburbs, who make our living rustling spreadsheets all day long. There's no way we can have a drunken conversation about two-stroke snowmobile engines for upwards of an hour, because we drive a Toyota Camry.

When there's a crime near us, we have to call someone else to shoot wildly at the wrong person. The whole experience is very traumatic, and sometimes we have to go to an expensive small town like yours in order to get away from the horror of our recent past. Are those crullers? They're live bait, you say? Good lord. Sandra, these people have time to fish. I think the Queen must live like this.

What we do have is a little thing that the self-help books tell us is called stick-to-it-ive-ness. Instead of taking big tax breaks for pony farming and running multinational agricultural corporations in our spare time, we go to the Home Depot and pretend we know how to caulk a bath surround. I wouldn't even know what to do with a board of directors meeting, much less an IPO. Hell, we're not even tough enough to be condo dwellers, but maybe in our retirement we'll get there some day.

I think with your help, and money, we could build a suburb for disadvantaged people just like ourselves way out here. Then, we could look at your beautiful, authentic meth shacks. With any luck, we would pretend we're one of the truly free, before climbing back into the RX350 for a four-hour commute to the office.

Underwing Challenge Day #3

Who is your main cast? Describe as many of your OCs as you can cram into one post.

I did want to keep some of their eventual names a secret, but I think it would be better to talk about each of them so y’all can have a better view of my WIP. I’ll try to keep most of their backstory close to the chest tho. I’ll keep my OC’s under a cut for those who have been reading The Alters and don’t want to be spoiled, and for those who just don’t like long posts on their dash. ^^

Dinn

Dinn is the younger of the two between him and Creed. He is incredibly impulsive and has a large temper to boot that can get pretty out of hand if his powers begin to act up. Back in the day he was one of the many lightning wielders in the army. Due to their ability to shoot lightning from a long distance away, they were essential as “bombardment soldiers” as they were able to throw the enemy off their game early on, before the other magic and non-magic users entered the fray. Dinn himself wasn’t always well-liked in the group due to his sharp tongue and unwavering wit. He’s extremely stubborn and is generally rough with others, even if he considers them friends.

Creed

Creed is the older of the two between him and Dinn. He is very wary of his own emotions as well as those of others, making him seem both a bit stiff and caring. He was one of the few and far between fire users that the army was able to precure. Initially many of his fellow soldiers were curious about him and his abilities, but a few found him to be too standoffish and a bit of a loner. When happy he can be spry and bouncy, but when sad he is stone cold and silent. He has a bit of a turbulent up and down personality, as well as a hesitance to use his powers.

Fallen

Fallen, like Creed, can be a bit all over the place at times. Fallen is a bit over protective and possessive in nature. Due to having lost several loved ones in the past, he finds it difficult to let go of that which he loves. He’s very stubborn, possibly even moreso than Dinn, to the point that his unwavering stance can kind of be a turn off for some people. Despite this he has a genuine heart and desire to protect the innocent. He adores the worlds around him, but finds it hard to stop beating himself up over things he can’t change.

Daemon

Daemon isn’t a loner, but she’s often forced into isolation due to her upbringing. Daemon is specifically a Stone Golem who, in her world, is seen as reprehensible by the humans she lives near. Because of this she is afraid to interact one-on-one with others and is very closed in. She has a hard time reveling or understanding her emotions. Despite this she is a great listener and a fierce protector. When she finds someone to love she will stop at nothing to ensure their happiness and safety. She hopes to one day not be afraid of the world around her and what it may hold.

Patient

Patient has a bit of an obsessive personality. His desire to be loved and to be wanted/needed can often become overbearing and even violent. He can be quite a scary individual when confronted with this. However, when in the right state of mind Patient is a very calm and endearing person. He can be both a fanciful storyteller and a quiet listener to those he cares for. He has many ways of endearing himself to others and often picks up small traits and habits from those he interacts with.

Sir

Sir is not a man you want to take lightly. He is very literal when it comes to his work and his thoughts. He is also extremely blunt about his opinions and his desires. This can be both a good thing and a bad thing. It can be bad in the sense that he doesn’t take much of anyone else’s feelings or safety into consideration. At the same time tho, those who find it hard to deal with people who are wishy washy or who don’t like trying to guess what people are thinking might actually find his honesty endearing.

Mad

Mad has some odd tastes in what he wants and what his goals are. Truthfully he has no real plan other than “escape.” So, coming across the others, he finds it hard to deal with so many conflicting personalities at once and tries his best to self-isolate. This may all sound completely normal, but imagine what that would be like for a man who’s had next to no comfortable human interaction and can barely remember his own name at times. Mad is called Mad just because he appeared to be stark-raving mad when him and the others first meet. It takes a while for anyone to see his fear and paranoia are what is driving his erratic behavior.

Skull

Skull is very unsure of themselves and their place in the world. Having a large physical deformity that tends to hinder their movement and their sight, they’ve been forced into hiding many times over due to being easy prey for even moderately sized predators. They’re often seeking friendship and even comfortable alliances among other weaker creatures. They have no desire to be “at the top” or even have a significant role in the world. They just want to live safely and happily.

Prince

Prince is a bit of a blowhard with a large ego, and a dangerous view of the world. He truly believes others are beneath him and that he can rise above all with just the flick of his wrist. Being one of the last magic users in his realm, his is regarded with both admiration and fear. Something he revels in regularly. However, in his quieter moments Prince is nothing more than a man with no plan. He lacks a lot of forethought when it comes to what he wants for his people or his world. He is often terrified of what the world needs or wants from him, and finds it hard to have any desires of his own.

Torch

Torch is a fierce woman with a strong desire for change. She is a dedicated and dependable worker for her tribe, but she often wishes she didn’t have to be. The stress of constantly having to work for her people has become overbearing, and she is often so stressed that she lashes out at those around her. Her lover for her people tends to supersede her need to care for herself and her relationships.

Nomad

Nomad is a bit of a flighty character. She talks a big game about love and acceptance, but when the going gets rough she hops on her snowmobile and leaves. Because of her often wishy washy stance she can be a very frustrating person to try and get to know, both with her desire to not talk about herself and her comfort level when others try to talk about themselves. Despite her nature she truly believes in love and how it can change her life for the better.

Lost

Lost is a bit of the pessimistic type. He’s weighed down with feelings of guilt and shame due to his past and has a hard time moving on from that. He doesn’t believe that the worlds need him to be in his correct place or with his correct person. He has a fast wit and a sharp tongue which, like Dinn, can often get him in trouble when face with the wrong people. He rarely enjoys personal connections anymore, but still hopes to one day be happy again, if just with himself.

Hey everyone! Just wanted to give a little update since I haven't been on in a few days.

Over my little break we hit 850 followers! (🥺🥺 thankyouthankyoithankyouthankyou for putting up with my bs) So in celebration I'll be doing a little something something for ya'll. (It'll probably be a mix between ships, letters, and prompts)

I'm working on TPLS and will be posting the first chapter soon (my guesstimate is around the end of the week or beginning of next)

The Cousins: Wendigo Tribe

Considering themselves to be the purest of the Garou, the Wendigo seek to destroy the influence of the Wyrm while preserving their ancient traditions

Tribal Culture: The Wendigo are among the best of Garou warriors, skilled at tracking and silent ambush. They direct as much of their power as they can against the Wyrm and for many Wendigo, that includes European Garou, whose influence ultimately resulted in the destruction of the Croatan. Virtually all Wendigo, save for those in Siberia, are descended from Native American peoples and wild wolves, and their Kinfolk are the same. Most of their internal customs like the powwow or the potlatch, are derived from Kinfolk practices.

Political Culture:

Some hard-line Wendigo believe they can drive the Wyrmbringers from the Pure Lands or wash the Wyrm-taint from the land with the Wyrmbringers’ blood. This extremist view has been gaining popularity as frustrations mount in the Tribe, and some talk of an alliance with like-minded Red Talons. Most take the view that defeating the Wyrm in all its forms should take precedence over choosing a particular breed of homid to dominate the continent. The Wendigo limit their ties to the other Tribes as much as possible. Although they are still somewhat close to the Uktena, they also have many allies amonth the Silent Striders, the Red Talons, and a healthy respect for the Black Furies. While some Wendigo will ally themselves temporarily with European Garou, it will usually be short-term and with much distrust. They have a particular hatred directed at the Fianna, Get of Fenris, and Shadow Lords. Justice among the Wendigo is usually a swift issue. If there are personal disagreements, it is often solved through a duel. In other cases, a council of tribal Elders congregates to find a fitting punishment or solution, often either banishment from the Tribe, or death.

Religious Culture:

The Wendigo were, and still are, a deeply traditional and spiritual Tribe that holds fast to many rituals of their native blood and Garou heritage. They practice ritual purity before hunts, battles, or other major undertakings, and seek aid from the spirits for many matters. They continue to seek some news about their lost brethren, the Croatan and the Croatan’s totem, Turtle.

Purity is held in the highest regard in the Tribe. Practitioners will go to elaborate means to make Rites and rituals as pure as possible; and members will purify themselves before major and minor events ranging from war to hunting. Many Wendigo will also turn to spiritual matters, such as journeys to the Ghost World {the Umbra} to seek answers to their burning questions or quests.  The Wendigo Tribe takes their name from their totem, the winter cannibal spirit of North America. Great Wendigo teaches its children the power of the cold, cutting wind, and skills like stealth, which they use to ambush the forces of the Wyrm {and occasionally trespassing outsiders}. Some even practice ritual cannibalism in emulation of their Totem. These Wendigo do their best to keep their activities secret from the rest of the Tribe.

History

In the ancient days before the Wyrmbringers and their Garou allies, the Wyrmcomers, the Wendigo tribe was one of three that tended to the humans and wolves of the Pure Lands. The Uktena tribe was known as Older Brother, the shaman of the People, and the Croatan was Middle Brother, the leaders and diplomats. Wendigo was Younger Brother, the warriors who came to settle in northern North America.

~Early History~ When the Tribe came into existence, Wendigo did not choose them. The Tribe was chosen by Sasquatch. At some point, Sasquatch ceased to be the Tribe’s totem and Wendigo adopted them. The reason behind this are forever the fuel of many brawls with the Wendigo. The truth behind the disappearance is, Sasquatch IS Wendigo, forever changed by the journey to the Pure Lands. The Wendigo, with the assistance of this new, ferocious spirit, took it upon themselves to guard the bridges over the collapsed Bering Strait so that no Wyrm beast would follow the Brothers. Both the Impergium and the War of Rage was less severe in the Pure Lands. The Croatan convinced the Wendigo that Gaia would control the numbers of the humans. Like everything else, if the humans remembered their place, they never felt the claws of Wendigo. As for the other changing breeds, if they didn’t stink of Wyrm or aid the enemies of Wendigo, then they were allowed to live. The southern tribes under the protection of the Wendigo became part of the League of Five Nations in 1450. It was an attempt to maintain and mend the relationships between the Three Tribes. At the same time, rivalries between various indigenous Nations split the internal cohesion of the Wendigo, so that they could not, at first, coordinate their efforts to deal with the Wyrmcomers.

~Colonial Age~ The Wendigo were the first of the Pure Tribes to come into contact with the settlers. The reaction of the Tribe was harsh dismissal, although their Kinfolk tribes did not always follow suit and sometimes had pity with the foreigners and tried to aid them. The death of the Croatan shocked the Wendigo. Moon bridges that could have ensured that messengers of Middle Brother could reach the others faster had been closed off, resentment and anger still simmered, and the Croatan did not have time to wait for their brothers tribes. Knowing that the Eater-of-Souls was close to entering this world and begin the Apocalypse, they instead chose to sacrifice themselves to contain it. Arguments between the Uktena and Wendigo as to who was responsible for letting the Croatan die escalated and drove a wedge between the two remaining tribes that lasts to this day. After the destruction of the Croatan, the Wendigo remained warriors, and they refused to yield in the face of the Wyrmbringers’ invasion of the Pure Lands. They fought, fell back, and fought again over the course of the centuries. In the end, the Wendigo were forced to retreat to their most remote caerns and wage war from there. Bitter arguments on how to proceed were made, if Kinfolk who had accepted European customs should be taken along and how to care for their old, sacred places, and if the Wendigo should turn to the Uktena for help. It ended up with a tribe divided, with the most radical withdrawing to the polar circle, while others remained at least near their caerns until messages had reached the Uktena and monitored the activities of the Wyrmcomers. The West, as the Wyrmbringers called it, was the First People’s land for centuries. The Wyrmbringers call this the “Indian Wars.” Humans, wolves, Wyrmbringers, Wyrmcomers all fought until the lands were stained with blood and the rank of Wyrm. The Wyrmcomers took caerns by force, not paying any attention to the rites performed at those sacred places for centuries. Because of this it is believed Storm Eater was released. The Wendigo were forced to work with their enemies to bring down this horrible creature. This of course did not last long. Wounded Knee proved that their thirst for the land made no alliance possible. The First People lost hope after that battle and scattered. The lose of the old ways broke their pride and broke the Wendigo’s hearts.

~Modern Nights~ These are the centuries that the Weaver took hold of most lands and never looked back. Even the First People got swept up into this madness. A great Wyrm road was build for easy access to Alaska. Snowmobiles and great vehicles made access to the North easier. Stupid Wyrmbringers risked their lives to find the North Pole, even placing a stupid sign there for others to see. Mostly throughout the history of the Wyrmbringer and Wyrmcomer invasion, they left the Wendigo’s lands to the North alone. Only the Get of Fenris could handle the Northern conditions. They were too busy following blood in the south. Now with all these new Weaver tools, the lands had been breached. 

In 1999, the Territory of Nunavut was created under Aboriginal rule. Finally Wendigo kin have a land they can call their own. It gives the Wendigo hope that other Wyrmbringer nations will follow suit. Many claim the land to be useless or unwanted but others say an untainted piece of the Pure Lands in never useless.

Organisation:

Outsider tribes know little of the Wendigo’s internal organisation. The Wendigo are loath to mix members of their Tribe with other Garou, seeing it as a danger to their purity. More rebellious members of a younger generation question the wisdom of this decision, as it limits the influence the Wendigo have in the Garou Nation, which ultimately isolates them even further. Camps: The Wendigo are few in number and closely knit; they could not survive the splintering that some tribes seem built upon. But just as their human Kin have many societies in their tribes ~warriors, police, educational and many more~ so do the Wendigo gather in some camps. While these groups create many differences of opinion, they are united in their lineage. WARPATH: When other Garou think of Wendigo, this is what they see. These are the stereotypical Wendigo. They are angry, butter, and willing to take the fight to the whites and to the Wyrmcomer Garou. They enjoyed their greatest size and power in the 1800s as some of their more notable kin such as Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, fought the White Power. While they have shrunk in size in recent years, there is a number of youngsters who tire of the elder’s hollow words of peace and cooperatively and willingly join the camp’s ranks. In recent events, the rise in native owned casinos is a blow to many a Wendigo’s pride, and such nonsense is at the heart of many Warpath’s  warrior’s rage. They see the very concept as a disgrace and a sign of full submission to the Wyrmcomers’ ways. The Warpath has not yet taken their battle to their own people, but some say it is only a matter of time.

THE SACRED HOOP: Preaching reverence of all spirits, White or Red, this camp came to power and has fought for prominence in the Wendigo tribe in a manner that has left neither the Sacred Hoop or the Warpath as the clear winners since the 1960s.  They are the ones who have invited non-natives into drum circles, written books on powwows, and other aspects of Native American culture. They work to exploit the New Age interest in native cultures and shamanism, to bring about a better understanding of their kin and the ways they still hold true to the Earth Mother. As more and more members of the tribe have become dissatisfied and impatient with their elders, however, this camp’s membership has grown old and somewhat thin. The Secret of the Hoop play a delicate game based primarily on the reality of what would happen should the Whites be eradicated from the face of the Pure Lands. It is not something that might happen, but something that several members of the Warpath and the Ghost Dance have been planning and articulating for over five hundred years. Should any of their more radical plans come to fruition, the Wendigo would find themselves, along with the Uktena and perhaps the Red Talons and some of the more militant Black Furies, against the might of the entire Garou Nation. This battle would surely be the Wyrm’s greatest work yet, and would only serve to drive the poison further into Gaia’s dying veins. So as long as the Warpath and the Ghost Dancers have existed, so have the Secret Hoop pulling strings that are attached to individual Wendigo here and there as needed.  They play primarily on the fact that the Warpath and the Ghost Dancers have always argued, and are ignorant to the initial reasons why, and ignorant to how similar their goals truly are. It would be a great blow to the tribe and the Secret Hoop should the others ever figure out just how closely they have been played against each other all these years. GHOST DANCERS: The group has members in the Uktena tribe as well and serves to make the land whole and clean as it once was. However, their Uktena counterparts do tend to be more squeamish when it comes to actual direct conflict. This camp is based upon the dreams of Wovoka, a Paiute holy man who taught that by living by the ways of the Earth Mother and dancing the Ghost Dance, a new world could be brought about. Wovoka’s Dance did not bring about a new world but his dream lives on.  Now, however, they dance quite differently and work to rid the Pure Lands of the Wyrmbringers through litigation and the White’s own law systems.  Recently they beam with pride at their success in establishing the nation of Nunavut, given to the Native People by the Canadian Government, as well as Nunavut’s place in Canada’s parliamentary government.
