It's throwback Tuesday! 🤣 Well, for me it is anyway. Don't worry, we aren't going too far into the past. I think this was just this last October? It was my first photo where I made a cameo, and when I was much newer to flash. But why throw back on a Tuesday? Well, that is because I am busy working on a piece of content you have all been asking for, and it's just taking a little longer than usual. Coming later this week will be my first video post. What will it be of you ask? Well, that would be a video on how to do basic composites in Photoshop! Wahoo! 🎉 A lot of you have been asking for it and I finally took a shot that works as a basic composite. However, the video is currently sitting at an hour long, so I am "trying" to see if I can edit it, while at the same time I learn Premier Pro, in order to do the edits! 🤣 So, now you know why it is taking a while!!😆 If you want to be notified when the video gets posted, and want to get featured when you do a composite of your own, be sure to hurry on over to @masterfoodphotography - click the link in the bio, and then register for the community! Happy Saturday everyone! I know, I am a little late on my post this Saturday. Things have been a bit crazy today. That said, I am super excited to share this post with you today! It is totally different than my norm. My norm being all dark and moody. So, hopefully you will still enjoy it. Harsh light is just so stunning to me. There is something about those dark, crisp shadows against the bright light that is magical. That is probably why it is so popular. As for how to create it, especially when you are inside? Are you team olives, or team NO olives? Me? I'm team NO olives. Mostly, anyway. I am definitely pro olive OIL! But, when it comes to olives, other than a very tiny amount of black olives on a pizza or in some Italian dish, I prefer to stay away. Of course, then there is someone like my sister who grew up eating olive and cream cheese sandwiches. I don't get it, but she loved it! Tough shoot this Saturday morning. It definitely got a bit messy as well, which you will see in the #BTSphotos. Shot on my Canon EOS 80D. Lens 50mm ISO 100 Shutter 1/200 Fstop 6.32 Lights, shot separately. A flash with a snoot on it was set to 105mm zoom at 1/16 speed. The flash in the stripbox was set to 35mm zoom at 1/2 speed. They were shot separately, except for when I shot the olives. The snoot was the only light when I shot the glass from behind. The strip box was brought in the front to light the cap of the bottle, and the olives. Raise your hand if you never know what to do with the napkin placement in food photography! 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️ How about if you know where it needs to go, but just can't get that perfect crumple? You know, the one that looks perfectly imperfect, & frames your subject just right, capturing the light in the most beautiful, yet 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘺 unplanned way. You would think that napkin placement would be the simplest thing, and yet for a small piece of cloth it causes more trouble than we would probably all like to admit! I can't tell you how many hours I have spent adjusting and re-adjusting a napkin. To ensure it adds to the photo, not subtracts. And when you finally get it just right, you have to be so careful not to touch it in the slightest. And the napkin in this photo of 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 a napkin and a plate... so hard to place!!! 🤦‍♀️ Okay, so if you feel my pain here, how do we solve for it, when napkins have a mind of their own? Honestly, there is no magical solution, it is always going to be trial and error. But, there are a few guidelines that may help the next time you are so frustrated at that napkin that you just want to crumple it up, throw it in a corner, and never see it again! Good morning! I hope everyone is having a good start to #humpday! For me, one pup spent all night stealing the bed. The other woke me up at 1am & wouldn't let me go back to sleep. I did eventually end up going back to sleep, but missed the gym, & kept snoozing! Now, I am caffeinated, fed, & well into my day! And I want to talk about how capturing these water droplets was harder than usual. It's important for everyone learning to realize that the final shots you see aren't always easy to put together. For those that are unfamiliar or new to flash, in order to capture crisp water motion shots, you need to have your flash set to at least a specific speed. Additionally, water will look more crisp if you are using a solid background. Well, for this photo, capturing crisp droplets was a bit of an issue due to the background & because of how dark the photo was. The first shots I took were sharp images with the lighting just right, but the droplets were blurs. When I changed the flash speed, the water became crisp, but the image was too dark. No matter what settings I adjusted, I just couldn't get the lighting & water exactly right at the same time. In the end, pic 1 is a composite with the lit background brushed back in. Pic 2 is a different composite, using the droplets from the darker image, but the subject from the original image. Pic 3 is just some pure #btsphotography for you! Shot on Canon EOS 80D, ISO 200, 50mm lens, shutter 1/200, fstop 5.6 Godox flash 24mm zoom (1/8 for crisp water, 1/2 for bok choy). I know, I know. I’ve been silent on IG the last few days. I’m sorry. On occasion life gets in the way of things... 🤷‍♀️ I hope everyone had a great weekend. I have been dragging my dogs on runs every day during the week, so I gave them a break and just took them out for a long walk on Saturday, enjoying the cooler morning air. How do you choose which angle you will be shooting from? Is it from looking at other photos for inspiration, proper planning, or just deciding on a whim? When it is not a type of food that has an assumed type of angle, for example, a sandwich will often be shot straight on so that you can see the different layers, sometimes it just comes down to what works better for you while you shoot. That’s okay. Take time to be creative and try new things. Somewhere within the shoot you will find that hero shot! Happy Monday, everyone. This morning I am bringing you a happy update. It’s been pretty busy over here at the Eat Lift Be headquarters, AKA my tiny two bedroom apartment. Actually, truth be told, it's been pretty busy for a while. The pups and I have been busy taste-testing recipes, and drooling over the incredible aromas coming from the oven.
