Baloise Ladies Tour
For every other team in the pro peloton, the answer is often "How do you solve a problem like Lorena?" She's the fastest sprinter in the world, with decent climbing legs and arguably the strongest team in the peloton around her.
The Baloise Ladies Tour was a bit of a Lorena Wiebes show this year, with Wiebes winning the short ITT prologue and every sprint finish that she contested. (She did not contest the sprint finish of Stage 2 after reportedly being pushed out of the bunch towards the final run-in, narrowing escaping injury.) Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich PostNL) won that stage, and was on the podium in three other stages, showing that she still is one of the best of the rest.
Tumblr media
The rest of the stages finished were the Lorena Wiebes show.
Tumblr media
Wiebes won both halves of the third stage, the road race portion of which was a crash-marred affair in which so many riders were caught up in the crash that the stage was neutralized and restarted. She went on to win the ITT portion of "Stage 3b" as well.
Tumblr media
With such a dominant performance, Wiebes took the over-all, with Pfeiffer Georgi (dsm-firmenich PostNL) and Thalita de Jong (Lotto-Dstny Ladies) rounding out the podium.

can you sell me on Jacopo Guarnieri. ive never heard of him but saw you mention that hes a good bean...
Can I sell you on Jacopo? With pleasure!
Jacopo rides for Lotto-Dstny, but he was a part of Démare's leadout train for years in Groupama FDJ and before that for Kristoff.
He's a huge music fan and often posts about music on Instagram. His Spotify playlists are public and I can't recommend them enough.
He has the cutest Bernese mountain dog.
He's vocal about Italian politics and social issues.
Which leads me to Giro 2022. Everything you need to know is in this article, but TL;DR: Jacopo wore a trans flag bracelet for Grande Partenza in Budapest as a silent protest against Hungary's transphobic laws.
Tumblr media
This wasn't the first time Jacopo talked about LGBTQ issues, more in this article from 2021.
And he used to write columns for Rouleur Magazine back in 2020.
This is why I think Jacopo is a good bean.

“luckily” it seems like dylan van baarle and steven kruijswijk were the only two who abandoned after the crash - no confirmation yet but it looks like a collarbone or shoulder injury for dylan and possibly a hip injury (?) for stevie. milan menten (lotto dstny) also abandoned after an earlier crash.

Cycling in Catalunya 😎❤️
Sunday morning was much nicer so we headed out for a really nice ride to Perelada, home of our locally grown cava and storks. There is also a pretty good patisserie there too.
It was again a bit of a sketchy ride home once we hit L’Escala with the Sunday lunchtime drivers, but we did manage to stop for a gluten free shandy 🍺
We had pre-ordered a half chook from our lovely rotisserie place for lunch 😋 The afternoon was then spent with domestics, study and other chores. It was actually getting quite late by the time we went out for our afternoon/evening walk so dinner tonight was melted provolone with chorizo. It’s a good thing we went for a ride 🙄
Monday was meant to be sunny and warm but there were very dark clouds in the sky. In the morning we did a few things at home before heading out on our bikes to watch the Volta a Catalunya. There are a lot of Australians in the race, which really isn’t surprising given how many of them live in Girona. I must admit I hadn’t realised how big this race is. Looking through the start list, most of the big names are here.
We watched the race in two different places. When we arrived at the first which was towards the top of a climb, the sun was out and we took off our vests, etc as we were quite warm. The clouds then came over and a cold wind picked up and soon we were putting everything back on. We chose a spot that a motorhome had also chosen and Team DSM also chose to hand out bottles (Lotto Dstny were a little bit down the hill).
Once the breakaway and peloton had passed we headed back down the hill (which was freezing). The route today was a series of loops so they travelled through a few places twice. Our second spot was one such place and we also found a bar and some sun in which to wait. Other spectators were also feeling the same as another two groups also stopped at our bar.
At the bar we had some patatas bravas and coffees. A weird combination but it worked for us today. Once the peloton had passed we headed home, me tucked in behind Jose into yet another headwind 🙄
We got home in time to watch the end of the stage on GCN. It looks like it’s going to be a very exciting race.
It was now quite late in the afternoon so we showered and went for our afternoon walk before settling in at home for nibbles and dinner.
