Unleashed (2005)
Tumblr media
Unleashed has a great premise that unfortunately, it doesn't quite use to its full potential.
Bart (Bob Hoskins) is a vicious thug who ensures he gets his money back from his clients by using Danny the Dog (Jet Li). Danny has the mentality of a child, but when the metal collar around his neck is removed, his martial arts skills are unleashed and he'll do his master's violent bidding without question. When Danny is accidentally freed, he befriends a blind piano tuner (Morgan Freeman) and his stepdaughter Victoria (Kerry Condon) but how long can he keep the beast chained up?
Too many martial arts action movies feature incredible action scenes but seem uninterested in developing their characters and the story? it's just an excuse to lead our protagonist from one beatdown to the next. That's not the case in Unleashed. There is a legitimate, original story here. Danny wants a normal life but all he knows is violence. You get the drama and heartwarming moments of a story where a wounded soul begins to heal, combined with the fight choreography of an action movie. Sign me up!
Except this is not an action drama. It's more of an action-comedy and the comical material doesn’t work at all. Danny, Sam (Freeman) and Victoria (Condon) are real people. The rest of Unleashed is populated by cartoon characters. Bart is an over-the-top sleazeball, his thugs are cavemen and the other villains are simply pins waiting to be knocked down. The mix of tones simply doesn't work.
We've established the premise is good but the cumulative events that lead to the film’s conclusion leave much to be desired. This picture is set in a world where the police do not exist. People can get into car crashes, shoot up apartment buildings, get into fights inside grocery stores, wave guns in people’s faces and unless there happens to be someone in the room that knows martial arts, there are no consequences whatsoever. You never hear a single siren blaring. This is also a film where what constitutes a lethal injury is very vague. People casually walk away from car crashes like they were nothing. I’ve been in a simple collision and was left shaken. In Unleashed, a 63-year-old barely dusts himself off after his vehicle flips over. You can also find what is undoubtedly the absolute worst assassination attempt ever put on screen in this film, proving that in this universe people only die when it’s convenient to the plot.
Unleashed has its share of really good moments. The martial arts sequences are fun. The dramatic story is compelling and well-acted. It's a step above what you'd expect to see in a movie about kicking, punching, and stunts. What it’s missing is that little something extra, one last pass through the typewriter to tighten up the story and remove some of the dumber bits to make this a really special film. As is now, I can recommend it, but with reservations. Other action movies containing more satisfyingly bone-crunching punches and if the drama intrigues you, you can see it done better elsewhere. It’s just an average-good movie. Watch it before you decide if you want to buy the special, autographed, limited edition, holographic blu-ray off of eBay. Oh, and when you do, choose the “Extended” version of the film, not the “Extreme” version because that first one has more footage. Found that out the hard way. (Extreme version on DVD, January 21, 2015)

Marvel's The Incredible Hulk movie review (Revisited): Such an underrated movie. So unloved that this movie did not even have a post-credit scene, the only MCU movie that did not get a post-credit scene. The fight scenes were all amazing. The opening act was intense. The Abomination was neatly designed. The brawl between Abomination and Hulk is still one of my favorite fights in all of MCU. The movie also sets up more characters, such as the Leader. If needed, they can use Abomination again since it has been confirmed that SHIELD has full custody of him. I have always preferred Edward Norton rather Mark Ruffalo due to his ability to improv. It made him hard to work with, but it made some scenes look good. Lastly, I prefer Norton's Hulk design over Ruffalo's as well. The only complaint I have is that Liv Tyler did a bland job. Overall, the movie receives a 9.0/10. #TheIncredibleHulk #Hulk #BruceBanner #EdwardNorton #BettyRoss #LivTyler #EmilBlonsky #TheAbomination #TimRoth #GeneralThaddeusThunderboltRoss #GeneralThaddeusRoss #WilliamHurt #MarvelStudios #Marvel #MarvelComics #LouisLeterrier #AviArad #MarkRuffalo #LouFerrigno https://www.instagram.com/p/BwGOjw9gNb7/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=e7z91w7l6g6b

Screen grabs from ‘A Crystal calls’ The Dark Crystal, Age of resistance making-of documentary on #netflix
Featuring our journey of ‘Lore’, initially a character that was to be 100% CGI, but instead he was successfully delivered as a practical puppet, Go team #Creatureshop 🤙🏻. Images include, on set with LORE before and after post production puppeteer removal, Paul and @zosiass in the rehearsal room with lead ‘Lore’ puppeteer Damien Farrell and camera test footage with Paul and @zosiass puppeteering early ‘Lore’, an experience we will never forget.... We really love that pile of Rocks!
‘It was a great honour to be the Senior fabricator working on this character and being so involved in the whole process, from the make, early test puppeteering and seeing it through to looking after the guy on the shoot, accompanied by Big Z and the rest of the #creatureshop of course’ 💪🏻 x #TEAMLORE
