오늘은 L로 시작하는 주제를 고를 차례야. 너희는 L로 시작하는 단어 하면 어떤 단어가 가장 먼저 떠오르니? 어떤 단어가 가장 마음에 드니? Love! 그래? 나는 learn을 생각했는데. 그럼... 둘 다 얘기해볼까?

너희는 사랑이 감정이라고 생각하지? 나는 사랑은 행동이라고 생각해. 누군가의 매력에 이끌리거나 좋아하게 되는 건 ‘끌림’이라는 감정이고, 그런 감정에 따라 그 사람을 위해 무언가를 하는 행위는 사랑인 거지.

엄마가 너희를 사랑하는 건 분명하지? 하지만 만약에 엄마가 너희의 건강과 미래를 위해 아무 노력도 하지 않는다 해도 여전히 엄마가 너희를 사랑한다고 생각할 수 있을까? 사랑을 하는 데에는 시간과 노력이 들어. 상대가 무엇을 원하는지, 상대에게 부족한 게 무엇인지 알아내고, 그것을 채워주기 위해서는.

이제 배움에 대해 얘기해볼까? 나는 ‘교육’이라는 말을 별로 좋아하지 않아. ‘학교’라는 시스템이 딱히 효과적이지 않다고 생각해서인가봐. 여전히 교육이나 학교라는 말을 들으면 선생님이 학생에게 일방적으로 지식을 전달해주는 모습이 떠오르거든. 지식이나 기술을 연결하고 활용하는 진짜 배움은 학생들에게 떠맡기고 말이야.

모든 배움에 선생님이 꼭 필요한 건 아니야. 때에 따라 스승이 꼭 필요하거나 있으면 훨씬 좋기도 하지만. 하지만 함께 배우는 동료가 있으면 정말 좋을 거야. 혼자보다 둘일 때 배움의 깊이나 속도는 세 배 이상이 되거든.

두 가지 주제를 모두 선택한 건 실수인 것 같아. 너무 막연한 얘기만 하다가 끝나네. 내일은 M. 아직 무슨 단어를 고를지 모르지만 하나��� 골라야겠어.

Tonight on HBO, the Oprah Winfrey produced TV movie about Henrietta Lacks will air. It's about time she gets some recognition. Her story is amazing. The world can thank a Black woman for the polio vaccine. Henrietta Lacks had the world’s first known human immortal cells. Her “super cells” allowed scientists to duplicate them & distribute throughout the world for scientific research. Prior to this, human cells would only last a few days. In 1951, after being diagnosed with cervical cancer, scientists discovered that cells from her cervix could be kept alive and grown in a lab. Without her knowledge, permission or compensation, her cells were used to create the first human cell-line known as HeLa cells (taken from her first and last name). Scientists have grown more than 20 tons of her cells, and there are almost 11,000 patents involving HeLa cells. Henrietta's cells have been used for research into cancer, AIDS, the effects of radiation and toxic substances, gene mapping, and countless other scientific pursuits. HeLa cells have been used to test human sensitivity to tape, glue, cosmetics, and many other products. at my wal-mart they’ve got this big endcap display of this giant “love2learn” Elmo toy, but every time I pass by it i misread it as “Learn to Love Elmo” and just... damn... Elmo learns to love again.

Alternatively: your kids have to learn to love Elmo
